“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Ikigai is the new Hygge!* At Sofas & Stuff, we have been looking at the new Interior Design trends for 2019 and this is one we are really embracing.

The word Ikigai comes from Japan and loosely translates as ‘finding a feeling of purpose and wellbeing’. Within interiors this means using tactile fabrics such as wools, velvets and linens, and an earthy colour palette in lots of tones or teamed with inky blues. We recently visited Chelsea Harbour to see all the new collections and it was Romo Fabrics who told us all about Ikigai. They have put together this fabulous mood board to illustrate the trend perfectly.

Hambledon corner sofa with Indigo & Wills handblocked linen cushions. Port Isaac Chair in sumptuous Tango Lunar velvet

The emphasis this year is also on sustainable and recyclable fabrics so artisanal, handmade elements are very popular. There is another Japanese phrase associated with Ikigai which is Wabi Sabi, this roughly translates as ‘appreciating the beauty in imperfection’. So, we can celebrate the natural imperfections in fabrics such as hand-woven Harris Tweeds or painstakingly hand-blocked Indian prints. Or the textures of Sisal or Kilim rugs on wooden floors.

green velvet, linen union or a botanical print. These all help bring a feeling of the outside freshness into your home. The final trend we’d like to share with you is the New England nautical look. This timeless style brings and uncomplicated colour scheme using a sea of textured cool blue coastal tones to natural linens in sunbleached hues to create a breath of fresh air and seaside ambiance. They can work in any home from a quaint cottage to a modern beachside apartment - red and blue stripe fabric designs can create depth and height in any space. We have some great examples of this new trend at Sofas & Stuff in Eridge so why not pop in for a cup of Jasmine Tea and a chat! Call: 01892 572309. Another trend this season is for ‘greening’ interiors by filling your space with house plants seems to be affecting fabric choice too, with green fabrics on the up, whether it be

Rich Dark Chocolate Tart Serves 6 By Alex Floyd, Pastry Chef, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

Ingredients: Pastry: • 125g unsalted butter • 50g caster sugar • 200g plain flour • 1 egg Filling: • 200g 50% cocoa dark chocolate • 250ml double cream • 75g butter

Pastry Method 1. Beat together the butter and caster sugar then add the flour and rub between your fingers to create a breadcrumb-like consistency. 2. Stir in the beaten egg to bind the mixture then chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 3. Roll out the pastry to approximately 2mm thick and use to line a 8” round tin. Place a piece of greaseproof paper over the top of this, and use either baking beans or dry rice to fill the tin. 4. Bake for 30 minutes at 180ºC. Remove the baking beans and paper then brush the inside of the tart with a little beaten egg, then return to the oven for 5 more minutes before cooling.

Chocolate Filling Method 1. Heat the double cream in a saucepan and bring to the boil. 2. Add the chopped chocolate and butter to a heatproof bowl, then pour the cream over the top. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted and everything is combined. 3. Pour into the pastry case and allow to cool to room temperature, then serve with your choice of accompaniments – we use a salted caramel

sauce, raspberry gel, meringue shards and chocolate crumb, but fresh raspberries and vanilla ice cream are just as good!

We raised over £5,500 in the following week, from contributions to the donate campaign and through the sale of the 2019 “We support Ashdown Forest” car stickers. Although rewarding (especially with spring fast approaching) the rangers’ role can be quite demanding when we are trying to provide a good service to all the forest users with different needs and issues. So, we were delighted to read the messages of support and its great to know so many people share our love for the forest. Once again thank you for your contributions. With Best Wishes, The Ashdown Forest Rangers PS Please do visit our website www.ashdownforest.org for further information about the management of Ashdown Forest, our volunteers and our fundraising activities.

"How the merry bluebell rings To the mosses underneath..." - Alfred Lord Tennyson A few ideas for local Bluebell walks this Spring… time to get out and enjoy the views!

Costells Wood A Woodland Trust wood in Scaynes Hill, this wood is a site of ancient woodland (more than 400 years old) and has been designated an area of wildlife importance. Broadleaf trees inhabit the area, and ground flora includes orchids. Several small ponds are found in the site, alongside an extensive path network. Search for ‘Costells Edge, Scaynes Hill’ in maps.

Heaven Farm Has a nature trail that is especially glorious during Bluebell season. The wood parkland and waterside walks hold conservation awards from the South of England Agricultural Society and Lewes Chamber of Commerce and have featured many times in BBC programmes. As you make your way around the trail there is much of interest - from an ancient Bloomery (probably Roman) to a "Millenium" water wheel. An old pack horse bridge, a 300 year old dam badger sets and foxes' earths. And don't forget the wallabies with their joeys lazing in the sun or hopping around. There is a small fee to join the trail.

Bluebells Woods near Nymans While Nymans has a wonderful display of Bluebells there is also an area of woodland which is separate and one can enter without paying an admission fee to the gardens themselves. In late April/early May, it is carpeted with bluebells and there are primroses, violets, wood anemonies and other wildflowers. If the weather has been wet, it is better to keep to the outer paths as the central path on lower ground can get a bit muddy.

Staffhurst Wood Near Edenbridge, widely carpeted bluebells are the crowning glory of this ancient woodland, which also features a beautiful pond. Nearest postcode: TN8 6QF.

Emmetts Garden National trust gardens near Sevenoaks, with incredible bluebell walks with fully carpeted woodland. Ide Hill, TN14 6BA.

Exhibition: Bridge Cottage – A home for nearly 600 years

Sheffield Park Having been left undisturbed for years, this historic woodland has a wonderful display and the ‘Walk Wood’ is a hidden delight of peace and tranquility, carpeted with bluebells throughout April and May. As it is off the beaten track, sturdy footwear is recommended and it may not be suitable for buggies and pushchairs.

Charlwood Bluebell Walk, Glover’s Wood Near Gatwick this wood is a little out of this area, however not too far. It is one of the largest areas of woodland in the Surrey Weald, containing oak, hazel and birch trees. It is home to a variety of rare plants and wildlife, and features historical relicts including a medieval bank and ditch systems. One benefit is that it is not overly busy like other Bluebell woodland at this time of year.

A free exhibition is being held in Bridge Cottage, Uckfield, to show its use as a home since 1436. Originally owned by a prosperous local farmer, Bridge Cottage has been lived in by Tudor, Stuart, Hanovarian and Victorian families, up to modern times. The last residents left some 50 years ago. This exhibition will show the development of the building as a home, as well as something of those who lived there. The building was saved from demolition by a partnership between Uckfield Town Council and Uckfield & District Preservation Society in 1983, and the National Lottery funded a full restoration in 2016. This exhibition will feature: • Changes in the appearance of Bridge Cottage since 1436. • Notes on families who have lived there over nearly 600 years. • Means by which medieval residents sought to keep witches out of the house.

Other places to find Bluebell walks

• Evidence from archaealogical exploration of Bridge Cottage.

The woods behind and around Balcombe Lakes are some of the best places. Around Standen House and Standen Wood (no charge for entrance to the wood), walking down from there to the nearby Weirwood Reservoir there is always a good show. There are also walks connected to the larger Bluebell Railway area.

• Medieval building techniques and details of the lottery funded restoration.

• Links with the early Sussex iron industry.

• Historical themed activities for children on the Saturdays. The exhibition is open 10am to 4pm daily (closed on Sunday), admission is free, and a detailed guide book will be on sale. Runs until Saturday 6 April 2019.

A peaceful rural setting to say goodbye to your loved one – the Wealden Crematorium All too often crematoriums are found in busy urban settings, with parking difficult and services rushed. All this is set to change this Spring when Wealden District Council’s new crematorium near Horam opens which sits in a carefully landscaped, peaceful setting within the gentle folds of the Sussex landscape. Its contemporary design uses stone, glass and water to provide a peaceful contemplative setting. Generous parking accommodating around 160 vehicles has been built into the design, complete with Electric Vehicle charging points, accessible parking, cycle racks and even separate provision for horse drawn hearses. A comfortable meeting area with ample toilets and baby change has been provided with everything carefully designed to meet the needs of those with a disability. The ceremony hall seats 120 and is equipped with state of the art audio and visual equipment. There is

the opportunity to have the service webcast to those unable to attend and a DVD can be made. Unhurried services are being offered at one hour intervals which will also avoid mourners leaving one service meeting those arriving for the next. Located in a central location on the A267 just south of Horam the crematorium will be no more than a 30 minutes’ drive from any of Wealden’s towns and villages. Those living outside the district will also be welcome to use the facility. Very conscious of the need to protect the environment, expert advice on ecological issues was sought; consequently there are 30 acres of beautiful landscaped grounds, wildflower meadows and

new hedgerows. Nearly 8000 trees have been planted to form new woodland and screening with over 4500 shrubs and 4700 herbaceous plants incorporated into the scheme. As a result the site has a high potential for nesting birds with the woodland and hedgerows provide ideal nesting habitat for a range of bird species. Bat boxes have also been installed across the site. As pressure on cremation services grows there is an increasing need for families and friends to be able to mourn their loved ones in an unhurried, peaceful setting, without the additional stress of travelling long distances or rushed services. Wealden believes that its crematorium responds to these needs and that its modern, compassionate approach to celebrating the lives of our loved ones will provide a top class service for people of all faiths and cultures. A New Pooh-seum in Pooh Country With uncertainly hanging over the future of Pooh Corner in Hartfield, and a possibility that developers would get their hands on the beautiful property, we’re pleased to bring news to the wider Ashdown Forest community that after a gruelling process, Neil and Sam Reed have taken ownership and thus secured Pooh Corner’s immediate future. Here, Neil brings us upto-date with their plans: We took over from the previous owners on January 25th, making us the third owners since the creation of Pooh Corner back in the 70’s. The process took some 12 months, including, among other things, presenting a 100-page business plan to the bank! All I can say is that anyone who says that buying a house is stressful should never attempt to buy a house and a business at the same time! Top of our list was adding a more educational feel; we spent much of last year sourcing some amazing items for a new ‘Pooh-seum’ that we’ll be opening before

the summer. We have items as far back as 1924, highlighting the diversity of Winnie the Pooh worldwide. Sam (my wife) and myself were always Pooh fans, I still have a hardback version of Winnie the Pooh, received on my 8th Birthday inscribed by a family member telling me it was a favourite of hers. Sam and her mother did many Pooh cross-stitches and other creative things with the characters. And since we’ve been together (22 years) we’ve always had Pooh items around the house as a memory of our childhood. We often get asked if we are true fans and can genuinely say yes, we do feel amazingly lucky to be here and live in the wonderful village of Hartfield. Ultimately, we see our role as custodians of Pooh Corner, giving it a focus for the future, ensuring those who travel to the sites have somewhere to visit as part of the overall

experience, we’re certainly not in the centre of that experience as the Ashdown Forest does all the work, but we love chatting to those who walk in after a trip to the forest. One of the biggest challenges to date has been learning other languages to greet the many wonderful visitors. Some have travelled thousands of miles and others have travelled a few hundred feet, but they are all welcome! The feedback so far has been 99.9% positive. The future is exciting, with a new shop allowing us to stock more products from around the world, the Pooh-seum which will house fascinating items including very rare early bears, such as those created by Agnes Brush in the 1940’s and pre-Disney board games, some wonderful signed items or personal items from Christopher Milne. A revised menu will soon look after

people better and some other exciting new things, that we’re keeping under our hat. There was one moment when we realised we had such a responsibility with Pooh fans when a lovely Japanese gentleman walked in on our first day, my hands were full of Tiggers and Poohs and he looked at me, looked at the teddies, look back at me and exclaimed ‘Mr Pooh?’, before I knew it was thrust outside to meet his wife and daughter who had travelled all the way over from Osaka to visit the 100 Acre Wood. That’s what it’s all about, a worldwide community and the responsibility for this bear (and his friends) as he heads towards his 100th Birthday.
