20 years on: HRH Prince of Wales returns to the Millennium Seed Bank and Wakehurst ©Jim Holden/RBG Kew

Last month HRH The Prince of Wales visited Wakehurst place and specifically the Millennium Seed Bank (MSB) to see the progress made since he opened the striking glass building back in 2000. Initially the aspiration was to bank 10% of the world’s wild seeds by 2010, but today, the Wakehurst seed bank proudly represents the largest wild seed conservation project in the world, with 2.25 billion seeds from 190 countries!

Inside the bank, His Royal Highness (Patron of RBG Kew since 2016) visited the Surviving or Thriving exhibition, based on the State of the Worlds Plants and Fungi report, plus the underground vault where he was shown the processes involved in freezing seeds. Later, Ed Ikin, Head of Landscape and Horticulture at Wakehurst, explained how Kew’s science and the horticulture teams work together to propagate species for the future. The visit ended at Wakehurst’s stunning Coronation Meadow, created in response to Prince Charles’ request for wild meadows to be planted on the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.

Don’t Lose Your Way Our rights of way network is one of the country’s greatest assets with over 1400 miles of public paths criss-crossing England and Wales which have evolved over centuries. Millions in our cities, towns and countryside use this unique network but did you know that many miles of our public paths remain unrecorded and could be lost forever if they are not put on the definitive map (the legal record) by 2026? Ramblers, the walking charity, are urging us to get involved to help identify and claim any unrecorded routes before it’s too late, which is why they have launched their, “Don’t Lose Your Way” campaign. Anyone can help with this and a guide with full details of the historical background and how you can help can be found on Ramblers’ website www.ramblers. org.uk.

Don’t delay, download your guide from rambler’s website and see how you can save your path”. High Weald Walkers hold member-led walks on Sundays and Tuesdays to suit all tastes and full details can be found on their website www. highwealdwalkers.org.uk.

Local rambler, Trevor Mann, of Crowboroughbased Ramblers Group High Weald Walkers says, “The unrecorded routes do need to be identified and claimed by 2026. Most exist in law and many exist on the ground and are in current use but all are in danger of being

Estate walk at Sheffield Park Enjoy the stunning landscape and historic parkland, look out for dragonflies, butterflies, kingfishers or birds of prey.

1. Starting facing away from the visitor reception, cross the car park and enter the parkland through the kissing gate. Bear slightly left across the parkland following the grass permissive path, following signs to Ringwood Toll. Head through the two kissing gates and to the left of the stag-headed oak. After the gate, follow the path to the pedestrian gate in the middle of the forested area ahead and enter Ringwood Toll. This area was arable land farmed to grow cereal crops

until 2006 when the National Trust embarked on an arable reversion project to restore the area to grassland of high wildlife value. The land is grazed to help improve the nutrient balance of the soil to encourage wildflowers and associated insects. The parkland now has a rich fauna, including abundant green woodpeckers, at least eight species of bat and several scarce dragonflies. On clear days you can see Fletching church to the South West and the Ashdown Forest

to the West. 2. Passing the carving of the Green Man, turn left and follow the main path through the play trail. Follow the main trail around in a semi-circle exiting past the rope swing, past the stock gate on the left. Exit onto the parkland through the next pedestrian gate on the left. 3. Join the permissive path going right, go through the pedestrian gate. Head slightly left past two benches. If you are lucky you will hear the

steam trains approaching on the Bluebell Railway, and spot the tell-tale sign of clouds of steam through the trees. At such moments, it is easy to imagine that this landscape has remained largely unchanged for the last 100 years. The 3rd Earl of Sheffield championed the growth of the railway and the station at Sheffield Park was built in 1882 to serve the house and garden. 4. Turn left downhill towards the gates and bridge - pass over the Hammerdick stream. Bear left and follow alongside the stream, past the hollow oak. The oxbow features are a result of straightening and deepening of the Ouse in the 1700s, meaning what used to be meanders of the river are now oxbow features. To restore the natural fauna and flora of the river, Sheffield Park embarked on a restoration project to improve the river and floodplain, and reconnect the Ouse to its local communities. 5.Turn left out of the floodplains at the next bridge, passing through the pedestrian gate. Head up hill slightly out of the trees and head right along the permissive path, keeping the trees on your left-hand side, towards a flat bridge ahead. The dragonfly and damselfly populations at Sheffield Park are nationally significant. The species recorded include Hairy Dragonfly (Brachytron pratense), Downy Emerald (Corduela aenea) and Red-eyed Damselfly (Erythroma najas). 6. Continue along the permissive route, along the level ground, towards the Pillbox and pond. The pillbox is the main surviving structure from the Canadian Army camp

7. Continue straight ahead through the pedestrian gate, follow ahead and enter Skyglade through a gate on the left and have a go at cloud watching. Exit via the same gate, turn left and follow the permissive path along the outside fence-line of Skyglade. At the end of Skyglade, continue straight ahead to the double metal gates out of the parkland. 8. Take in the views at Skyglade. Turn right and follow the track. Cross the weir into East Park. This is a perfect spot for views of the lakes and garden - keep a look out for kingfishers around the water's edge and for eels on the eel pass in the weir. 9. After the bench, bear to the right into the wooded area. During the Second World War, Sheffield Park was an extensive camp for several Canadian regiments. The Nissen huts that housed the soldiers covered a wide area stretching from the main road almost to Fletching village. Remains of these buildings can still be seen around Sheffield Park, including in East Park. Various pots, crockery and equipment from that time are often found in the grounds. 10. At the first fork in the path within the woodland, turn right. Follow round to re-join two main tracks - turn left down the farther track on the other side of a fenced grassland area. Keep following the track around as it curves to the left, with the cricket pitch to your right and head back to the bottom of the lake. Follow the track back up to the car park from which you can head to the garden, tearoom or shop. With thanks to Sheffield Park and Gardens and the National Trust for providing this walk.

Chailey Repair Café Celebrates Its First Birthday on 10th August! One of this year’s most successful local initiatives celebrates its first year helping locals to live more sustainably. Chailey Repair Café, is part of the growing world-wide movement where volunteer experts repair things free of charge, (donations are invited to cover running costs). The café now has 37 volunteers who have repaired over 500 items in the past 12 months! When the cafe started a year ago, there were 66 Repairs Cafes in the UK – one of which was in nearby Forest Row. As of now there are 121 - two of which were started by people who visited the Chailey Café and went on to start their own! Founder Bryan McAlley said “Nobody, least of all me, had any idea how successful this venture would become when we cautiously opened last August. We have been fortunate to have had the support of the local community, the Parish Council and our local MP. Our success is due in no small part to our amazingly

Chailey cafe founder and co-ordinator Bryan McAlley, with Maria Caulfield, MP for Lewes, photo courtesy Penny Langley talented volunteers, who have successfully repaired food processers, clocks (including a cuckoo clock!) a model Spitfire airplane, some beautiful Victorian lamps, radios and record players, laptop computers, bicycles and lawnmowers, a huge range of clothing of all shapes and sizes and so much more.” Bryan added, “we have concluded that local folks must get through huge quantities of toast – if the

number of broken toasters is anything to go by! We recently dismantled a toaster to find a large deceased bumble bee inside it! The toaster is now fine, which is more than can be said for the bumble bee...” Chailey Repair Café is one of the first in the country to offer an on the spot spares ordering service – if your broken appliance needs spare parts, they will order them online for you and fit them when they arrive; you only pay for the parts. Once upon a Pooh Bridge As we all know Pooh bridge is located in Ashdown Forest, not far from Hartfield. Built in 1907, it was originally called Posingford Bridge and lay between two large estates of the area, it crosses a tributary of the River Medway. It was of course made famous by the game of Poohsticks which was first played on the bridge by Christopher Robin Milne and immortalised by his father in the Pooh stories. We can’t know if the game was first played at the bridge and then written into the story, or written into the story and then played at the bridge… In the late seventies East Sussex Country Council planned to replace the existing bridge (which was in danger of collapsing because its upright supports had almost rotted away) with a single-span utility structure. There was a public outcry! The bridge was held in the public’s consciousness by the

omnipresence of Pooh and so a campaign was launched to rebuild it, true to the original structure. The bridge was subsequently reopened by Christopher Robin Milne in 1979 and officially renamed as Poohsticks Bridge. The contributions had come in from Pooh’s world-wide fan club, his publishers,

Methuen, and Natwest. Representatives of ESCC pulled out the publicity stops for the opening, with white tape across the bridge and a speech by the chairman of the council’s highways and transportation committee! The site was so popular that twenty years later, in 1999

Once upon a Pooh Bridge continued

the ESCC made an appeal to Disney as the old wooden bridge had been worn down by an overwhelming number of visitors and we had entered a new age of health and safety concerns and the bridge didn’t comply. Disney provided a substantial donation towards the estimated £30,000 needed to replace it. The donations from Disney, building firms and members of the public funded its complete reconstruction yet again. The newly built and modernised bridge retained its precursor’s original style and was health and safety compliant. However, what happened to the Pooh Bridge that Christopher Robin Milne had opened all those years ago? Well, after it was dismantled, it remained in an ESCC warehouse for many years until it was decided it should be donated to the Forest Centre at Wych Cross in the late noughties. Then about 5 years ago or so, it came under new management, where it was reconstructed in a private garden and where it remains to this day. It is now looking for a ‘new home’ and we had the privilege of visiting its present site recently. At the time of its official opening, back in ’79, Christopher Milne said of the Hartfield area, that there were more houses than during his childhood, but nothing else had changed. Of the bridge he was quoted as saying, “I first found the bridge 20

years after it had been built when I came upon it with my nanny. How could we not fall in love with it? Then my parents came and how could they not fall in love with it? If Pooh was here today, a hum would be working its way up to the surface, Rabbit would be making a list, Eeyore would be down by the water somewhere feeling left out and Tigger would have pushed you reporters out of the way.” I wonder if he knew then that Pooh’s legacy would continue well into the 21st century, growing steadily across the

world to international fame and firmly cementing his place in classic children’s literature for progeny. For any enquiries about Pooh Bridge, please drop an email through to the editor, info@ ashdownforestliving. co.uk, (NB: A donation to facilitate the ongoing management of the Ashdown Forest and its environs will be made after a successful sale of the bridge).

Riding for Brooke Last month, riders from across the area took part in a sponsored ride through Ashdown Forest, where over £3000 was raised for Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys, a charity which cares for over 100 million working horses and donkeys in the world. The charity supports the lives of of 600 million people in countries including Pakistan, India, Kenya and Ethiopia, etc. to educate the owners of their working horses and donkeys to help them care for their animals and ease their suffering. Shelters are built to provide shade from the hot sun, veterinarians to treat animals and advise owners, farriers to trim hooves, advice about harnesses, tack, etc. They work with governments at all levels and

international bodies such as the UN to provide support and promote long-lasting change. Deborah Jackson who helped arrange the ride is to put on another on the 21st September. Walkers are also welcome to join in and dogs (on leads). The start is at Pippingford Park, TN22 3HW. There is ample parking, toilets, caterers and an ice cream van. There is a 10 or 7 mile route (different to July’s route) taking in amazing views. Riders can book in via www.equoevents. co.uk and there’s a prize for the rider who raises the most. DUE CARE & ATTENTION

“The Eyes Have It” at Crowborough Opticians! Now in its third year Crowborough Opticians goes from strength to strength, combining a friendly and highly dedicated clinical approach with a growing reputation for excellent frames and lens products. Dispensing Optician Alan Stone believes in a “no hard sell approach” but advocates “a community based eyecare programme”. He insists that whether frames are budget led or more high-end designs like Lindberg or Maui Jim, well fitted spectacles are the go-to order of the day. On that he says he will not compromise! Enabling patients to choose from a wide range of lens options takes time and at the practice giving a bespoke service is paramount to its current success. The process is carried out in a relaxed and orderly fashion. New technologies have seen the practice specialise increasingly in glare

reduction driving lenses, occupational/vocational lenses and the latest ranges of transitions varifocals. At the clinical end, recent investment in the Retinal Imaging Scan (OCT) fulfils only part of the patient journey and places Crowborough Opticians at the cutting edge of the new digital optical scene. Whether looking after patients in the Crowborough practice or in the comfort of their own homes, as part of the increasing home-visiting service, both Alan and

Matthew, (owner and lead optometrist), draw from over twenty-five years’ experience each allowing them a firm professional platform. Behind all the efficient structures in place is Karen the practice administrator. Like all the team, nothing is any trouble and a warm welcome always awaits. Miss Moneywise CLEANING TIPS Coca Cola - A surprisingly good all round cleaner! Clean toilet: Pour the cola neat around the rim and let it flow into the bowl. Let it sit for about an hour and then scrub off any stubborn stains with a toilet brush, it’s great for tackling all limescale. Clean grout: Saturate a rag with coke and damp down grout. Leave it for 10 mins and clean off thoroughly, use an old toothbrush to scrub if possible. If grout isn’t fully clean, repeat.

for a good while, then scrub off.

Clean a dirty pan: Finding it hard to clean burnt on food? Poor cola in the pan and leave

Remove grease stains from clothing and fabric: put a cup full or can of coke into your washing machine tray, with your usual detergent and run it through a normal cycle. You can also use this method to remove blood stains. Remove rust stains or rust on surfaces with a cloth or sponge soaked in coke.

Update: Forest Row Festival After a year’s break, Forest Row Festival is back on weekend 20th-22nd Sept with an amazing programme of music, spoken word and art. New for 2019 will be a series of cross-generational events, a movie-making competition, and the welcome return of the village bike ride. The festival team has been busy raising awareness: last month local artist Julian Johnson led a group who decorated the façade of the former Coop on Hartfield Road in suitable festival style. The team have also organised fundraising gigs, the next is at Hop Yard on 6th September with an all-star line-up. Great news, the festival has again been selected for National Lottery funding.

“The lottery money is fantastic. Combined with the generosity of local people and businesses, it helps keep the festival free to attend”, commented organiser Matt Hatton, “but our fundraising is still behind where we were in 2017 and with more than £3000 of extra costs to meet!”. In order to meet growing costs, the festival is looking for sponsors, with options

including entrance banners, programme adverts and many others. Direct donations are also flooding in. They can be made via JustGiving. com, under the name “FrowFest2019”. You can contact the team about sponsorship opportunities, or events you may want to run over the weekend at enquiries@ forestrowfestival.org.uk.

Sustainable Living Tips We are all getting far more aware of our need to take responsibility for the waste we create and what happens to it (in particular plastic), which is all part of sustainable living. Here are a couple of tips you might like to try: • If you can’t sell an item but you need to get rid of it fast, you can place it (or ask a friend to) on a local Facebook selling site for free - or put it on ebay for a £1. This is very effective and you can have it collected, rather than having the problem of taking it to the tip. It might be just what someone else is looking for! • Make up ecobricks using your old plastic bottles and stuff them full of plastic (ecobricks are used to make plastic structures), to get more information about how to make them effectively and where to

drop them locally see: www.facebook.com/ groups/ecobricksUK. • Ban clingfilm and sandwich bags from your cupboard and use other coverings like reusable beeswax wraps or glass (or existing plastic) containers that can be used over and over again.

Dear Sariah,

SUDOKUS

My brother-in-law used to be very close to our children (he has no children of his own) but after a fall out with my husband he's no longer interested at all, we struggle to see him once a year. I've worked on trying to get my husband to resolve the situation and it is better, they are now civil again, but he remains uninterested. I've even suggested he might like to take the kids for a day out without us (all expenses paid, I would take them and pick up, etc. they are old enough to do this with ease) but he has absolutely no interest. To give you an idea, at his own wedding he said the day his nieces, nephews were born were the best days of his life... It's painful to witness, but I think it might be time to give up. - Marion

It sounds as if the issues between your husband and his brother aren’t really resolved and that could be why your brother in law is struggling to allow himself back in to your family circle. You say that they are civil to each other now and that doesn’t bear the hallmarks of a good relationship. Perhaps his need to keep himself away from your children is an effort at self-protection, a way to keep his distance in case relations break down again. Is there any way that your husband and his brother could really get together and fix their broken relationship? From an outside perspective, it feels like this may be the root cause of his absence. If you feel this isn’t something your husband could do, perhaps just have an honest, open conversation with your brother-in-law. Ask him why he chooses to keep his distance from your children and perhaps share how much you all miss him in your lives. You can’t force someone to have a relationship with your children, however sad that may be, but perhaps trying to open the lines of communication with him is the starting point to the children having their uncle back.

Brilliant

Beauty Tips

With such an amazing range of beauty products and treatments on the market these days, it’s never been easier to enhance your natural features! Here are some tips to help.

1. Invest in anti- pollution skincare

3. Face wipes

The environment can have a devastating effect on your skin over time – causing acne, blackheads, irritation, etc, so try to find masks and treatments that contain anti-oxidants which help your skin fight back and give your face a deep cleanse at least once a week, to remove as many impurities as possible. Also try to find a skin care brand that treats the cause of issues and not the symptom.

It may be time to break up with your face wipes… the majority are loaded with chemicals, not what your skin needs. And especially a massive no-no around the delicate eye area (they are also a no-no for environmentally sustainable living).

2. Instant eye lift You can’t overstate the huge impact the shape of your brows and colour-strength has on your overall look, you can work on this with products like kohl pencils, brushes, etc. or consider a professional treatment with shaping, lash extensions and lifts. The effect can be dramatic and take years off.

4. Oily skin? Despite the temptation avoid harsh cleansers. It’s easy to go hardcore, but if it’s too harsh you’re making the problem worse, as the skins natural response is to just produce more oil. Choose a gentle, soap-free cleanser, preferably fragrance-free.

5. NEVER EVER forget your SPF! Brought to you by Louella of local salon, Beauty by Louella : 07470 588252.

The 1st Forest Row Scout Troop is growing and looking for new adult volunteers What kind of people are we looking for? All kinds! Some of the leaders are enthusiastic about helping scouts develop skills for life. Some use it as an excuse to relive their childhood and do new things. Some are community-minded and some are rough, tough, outdoors types who want to pass on knowledge. Volunteers help to run games and activities and support the scouts to achieve their badges and awards. If this sounds like you, please contact the Group Scout Leader Matt Hatton: matt.hatton@egscouts.org.uk. We have many flexible options if time is limited.

Community Bee Project By Catherine Smith, Forest Row resident

Did you know that bees are responsible for pollinating 70% of the fruits and vegetables we eat? It has been said that without bees, humans can’t survive. When we think of bees, we think of honey, the most delicious sweet treat. But one of the things I have learned as a beekeeper, is that honey is incredibly precious. Last year, the 2 hives I was looking after, produced about 100 jars of honey. The bees fly 55,000 miles, the equivalent of twice around the world to make just 2 jars worth! A bee in the summer months lives just 3-4 weeks, collecting nectar and pollen until she can fly no further. Each worker bee will have worked her way up through the social structure of the hive, from cleaner, to feeder, to nurse bee, to finally a flying forager. And every one of the 60,000 plus bees in the hive will have come from a single queen. Honey and it’s production really is a miracle of the natural world. I started keeping bees 4 years ago, and I quickly learned that it is a totally addictive pastime. This year, I have 6 hives, and my passion for caring for bees as naturally and holistically as possible is growing still.

Recently the opportunity has arisen to keep bees on land on the Ashdown Forest, and in Ashurst Wood, but bees need hives. This led me to wonder if I could involve the community in beekeeping. With this in mind, I have started a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for more hives and begin to involve the community. On the crowdfunding website, contributions to the fund can be made in exchange for honey, for visits to the hives, for a honey cream tea and for candle and waxed cloth wrap making workshops. You can even come and have a “Hands-In Hive Experience”, seeing the inside of a hive and learning all about the bees and their lives. The money raised will be used

to buy 10 new hives, so that we can increase the numbers of bees in our local area. We will also buy adult and children’s bee suits so that groups can come for free to see the bees close up. Finally, any funds left will be used to buy, distribute and encourage the planting of wildflowers in the area. Everyone who contributes will also get advance notice when the honey harvest is in, getting the chance to be first in the queue to buy truly local honey. If you would like to know more, you can find information on Facebook @springhillhoney or at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/ springhill-honey-beecollective. Or email me direct catt. smith@yahoo.co.uk
