“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Shrove Tuesday What’s it all about?

“Shrove” is the past tense of “shrive” which the Oxford English Dictionary defines as “presenting oneself to a priest for confession, penance, and absolution”.

Shrove Tuesday is the day just before the start of the penitential season of Lent when traditionally Christians made a special point of ‘self-examination, of considering what wrongs they need to repent, and what amendments of life or areas of spiritual growth they especially need to ask God’s help in dealing with.’ The tradition of marking the start of Lent has been documented for centuries; in around 1000 AD, for instance, Ecclesiastical institutions stated: “In the week immediately before Lent everyone shall go to his confessor and confess his deeds and the confessor shall so shrive him as he then may hear by his deeds what he is to do (in the way of penance)”.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder: The Fight Between Carnival and Lent

By the late Middle Ages, it also became a kind of celebration in which many societies would eat pancakes or other foods made with rich foodstuff such as butter, eggs and fat that would have to be given up during the Lenten season. Thus ‘pancake day’ was born. The specific custom of British Christians eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday dates to the 15th century – trust people to

have made a celebratory gesture by emphasizing feasting on what was supposed to actually be a solemn day of remorse and repentance! At one time Shrove Tuesday was known as a “halfholiday” which would start at eleven in the morning with the ringing of a church bell to encourage people to service. Pancake races are held in some villages and towns across the country. Indeed, we had one in East Grinstead for a time. The tradition is said to have originated in 1445 when a housewife from Olney, Buckinghamshire, was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time, until Continues over the page.

SHROVE TUESDAY, WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? CONTINUED

she heard the church bells ringing for the commencement of the Shrove service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan with pancake, tossing it to prevent it from burning. The historical Olney pancake race is still held to this day. It is a women and children's race and participants must have lived locally for at least 3 months; a 415-yard course is competed. The rules are strict: contestants must toss the pancake at the start and the finish, and wear a scarf and apron.

until it broke apart, releasing the (probably traumatized) cat. This was done to ward off evil spirits. Happily, the Scandinavians now just fill a barrel with candy like a piñata. Children dress up and hit the barrel with bats until it cracks open and spills the sweets. The barrel often still has an image of a cat on it; the person who breaks open the barrel is the “Queen of the Cats,” while the person who breaks the bottom of the barrel is the “King of the Cats”. Perhaps the joys of pancake day will always survive as a time to gorge prior to lent where we should try to give up some naughty food, cut down on the sugar and do a bit of fasting! All good stuff especially needed in this day and age of sugar-rich-food.

Incidentally the Olney race has also become a transatlantic pancake race against the town of Liberal in Kansas, USA. 2019 marks the 70th year the two towns will have run against each other – the winner of both races will have their winning time compared to decide which town wins.

SUDOKUS

In Scandinavian countries instead of the one-day ‘pancake day’ feast, they have a child-centric holiday called ‘Fastelavn’ which is celebrated on the Sunday or Monday before Ash Wednesday. Taking place seven weeks prior to Easter, the main tradition associated with the holiday was the placing of a black cat in a barrel and beating the barrel with fastelavnsris (this can be anything from a stick or a club or a bunch of twigs)

AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY

‘DOWN TO EARTH’

“We didn’t inherit the Earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children.”

at the top of the corporate pyramid, Rolf also gained an insight into the stranglehold our established structures have on organisations.

Forest Row residents Rolf Winters and Renata Heinen premiered their award-winning documentary ‘Down to Earth’, in London late last year. The film was presented by Oscar winner and change-maker, Mark Rylance.

He started searching for a different perspective and a key to renewal: Rolf was exposed to the leadership principles and the way-of-life of the Anishnabe (first Native Americans), and he and Renata felt they’d found that key. This way-of-being resonated so strongly, the couple left their successful cosmopolitan life and retreated for four years with their three young children into the woods of Upper Michigan in order to gain a deeper understanding of the wisdom and heritage of the Native Americans. Following this Rolf, decided to go with his family on a year-long journey around the world, in search other ‘Keepers’.

It is the story of their family who, having left the rat race behind, embark on a journey of a lifetime, traversing continents in search of a new perspective on life. During five years of filming on six continents, they seek out tribal sages, the ‘Keepers of the Earth’, who have never appeared on film or been interviewed before – only agreeing to go on camera due to the rapport built by living side by side with the family. The deep wisdom spoken, the filmmakers believe, has the power to transform lives. Director Rolf has his professional roots in the corporate world. He founded his own leadership consulting firm at the age of 30 and spent the next 10 years travelling across Europe as a boardroom consultant and coach, working for some of the largest corporations in the world. Through his in-depth experiences with leaders and decision making

They found indigenous communities who have retained a natural balance and live in harmony with their surroundings, far removed from the technologically focused cultures of today. Continues over the page.

AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY ‘DOWN TO EARTH’ CONTINUED

Rolf and Renata subsequently put together this newly released film of their experiences and Rolf continues his work with leaders around the world, now integrating the wisdom and insights gained. Oscar-winning composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Billy Elliot) who composed the score, had this to say about the film: “I have not come across a piece of work that so dramatically combines the personal and the universal. Working on a project where there is such a vital connection between the

filmmakers and the subject– on a personal, political and spiritual level–meant that I felt a particular responsibility to be as truthful as I could to their vision.”

s i r r o M The Traditions of

As we get towards the springtime and the longer days we think of the outside and the countryside. A typical English romantic vision consists of cottage gardens, beach picnics in sun (and rain!), and Morris dancers. I can’t help you with the first two of these thoughts but I can help you with the last one.

Morris start?” The first written records are late 15th century when it was apparent that Morris was well known and well established. The very first record is of a silver cup in 1480 with Morris dancers on it. Household accounts after this show purchase of fabric and bells for dancers as well as suppers. Although costumes vary between sides there is often a local element to the colours. Shalesbrook’s colours are those of the Ashdown Forest: brown, orange and yellow.

Shalesbrook Morris who are based in Forest Row have existed since 1977, when a young lady, Julie Marston, took it in to her head to learn about and to teach others about Morris traditions. One of the founding members, Sandy Derham, still dances with the side. We are a ladies side although we do have both male and female musicians. There are several types of Morris but the dances which Shalesbrook perform are mainly in the Cotswold tradition which were usually performed between the sowing of the seed and the harvest. The main traditions danced are Adderbury, Bampton, Bledington and Fieldtown (now known as Leafield). All come from well-known Cotswold villages.

THE TRADITIONS OF MORRIS CONTINUED

(Ashdown Morrismen include green socks in their kit). Incidentally the design for the “rumble” bells worn today originated 700 years ago. Although practice happens all winter on Thursdays in the Peter Griffiths Hall in Forest Row the first dance out happens on St Georges Day, 23rd April. The 1st of May—Garland Day – is celebrated at the AA Milne and E.H. Shepherd memorial at dawn. Shalesbrook, with their guests Ashdown Forest Morris, dance at sun up to welcome in the summer. This festivity was started in 1982 and has continued without a break since then, often with 100 people in the audience to help the side celebrate. We dance and sing and celebrate the May Tree. Before the calendar change (when September lost its 11 days) this May Day would have been later and therefore was warmer still. We often dance at festivals such as the Spring one at

Hever, and continue to perform at pubs, fairs and fetes throughout the summer. If you think this sounds fun as well as being part of a traditional English pastime, why not come and meet us. We are not ballet dancers or gymnasts but we all love the history and the music. There are times when everything clicks: the music, the dancing and the atmosphere and you too can experience and be part of the “Magic of the Morris” which lifts us all from our workaday lives. We would love to meet potential dancers and musicians so give us a call or look at our website for contact details. You have nothing to lose! GEM OF THE FOREST Old Lodge Nature Reserve

The Ashdown Forest has a history of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age, when people scratched what living they could from the poor soils, and the woodlands had wild grazing animals as well as bears, wolves and wildcats. That’s reflected in one of its specialities – the beautiful and charismatic redstart, which is not really common at all in Sussex. These birds constantly ‘twang’ their brilliant russet-red tails as though they’re attached by springs, and are often easy to see and especially to hear with their distinctive song and rattling calls of their young.

The Normans designated the area as a hunting forest for the king, and the commoners continued to hold the right to use it in their customary way, provided they didn’t hunt the deer. Although ownership of the forest changed hands many times, its landscape was hardly altered until the Second World War when much of it was used for military exercises.

Old Lodge is a wide-open landscape of heather and grassland, clumps of gorse which is dotted with birch and oak trees. There are still small plantations of Scots pine (much is now cleared as they are considered invasive) where coal tit and goldcrest whisper their thin, reedy calls, but there’s also a good chance of spotting a common crossbill – a rare and curious finch with a bill specially adapted for extracting the seeds from pine cones. In places, some of the pines have been felled to allow more heather to regenerate, which is just the spot to find the huge, bustling nests of red wood ants, constructed from millions of pine needles over which the ants toil constantly.

After the war, the Ashdown Forest Act was drawn up to allow free public access, and to provide a framework for conservation of landscape, wildlife and historical features. Old Lodge is a hidden gem of a nature reserve which lies in the heart of the forest, and its character is subtly but noticeably different from the true lowland heath of Iping Common – in the West of Sussex. The geology is slightly different, but more importantly Old Lodge sits about 500 feet higher, and that’s enough to make it markedly cooler. The experts concur that Old Lodge has something of the ‘feel’ of a place one might associate with the north west of Britain.

As always with heathland, grazing lies at

the heart of its conservation. But heathland grasses, young gorse and birch seedlings all make for rather tough, unpalatable forage.

like ash. This means they pack very tightly together and almost look like clay which can be harder for mining invertebrates to dig into, consequently those kind of invertebrates are not well represented on the site.

So as well as occasional rare breed cattle and even sheep, Exmoor ponies are brought in to graze - they are perfectly adapted to making the most of what’s on offer!

The bog holds some interesting plants scarce in other parts of the county such as marsh St. John’s-wort, bog asphodel and carnation sedge as well as many different species of Sphagnum moss. On the drier heath the delicate flowers of petty whin can also be spotted.

As Ashdown Forest is higher than other Sussex heaths, its climate is cooler and damper too. This gives the heath more of an upland feel, closer to the northern moors and the invertebrate assemblage reflects that too: there are fewer warmth loving species but many species more commonly found in the northwest, such as the striking ground beetle Carabus arvensis. The site is rich in spiders with the luminous green spider being found in the summer among the similarly green leaves of purple-moor grass. Ashdown Forest is named after the sand that occurs there, the individual grains are very small and greyish so appear

Nearly 250 species of fungi have been recorded including the unusual bog beacon and the rare nail fungus that grows out of horse dung. The reserve is 74 hectares and to visit it, use this postcode: TN22 3JD With grateful thanks to the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

CUPID February is the month of love… And no one represents this better than the god Cupid, the icon of love, ready at any moment to strike an innocent bystander with a luurve-arrow. But who is Cupid? He went by two names with different origins: his Roman names is Cupido which means ‘desire’, his other Latin name is ‘Amor’ which means ‘true love’. The god Eros is his Greek counterpart, which means ‘passionate love’… Cupid is often portrayed as the son of the love goddess Venus (Aphrodite) and the war god Mars (Ares) but in earlier Greek myths he is thought to be the fourth god to come into being and so one of the oldest – before gods even had parentgods!

Because in choice he is so oft beguiled’. So, we can conjecture the Romans invented Cupid as a child because he is easily, deceptively charmed or enchanted, much as a child might be and which love can do to anyone!
