Best of British Native British plants create elegant and contemporary gardens. They may require less watering and less maintenance too. Plus, you’re helping to support local growers.

Bright Colours People want cheer and joy in their gardens, and an injection of colourful plants does just that. Go for bold, vibrant colours, and make your garden as colourful as you like. Retro plants such as Chrysanthemums, Asters and Dahlias are very popular right now.

Grow Your Own There’s no greater reward than growing your own fresh fruit and veg, people are increasingly conscious of where their food is coming from. Whether you have a windowsill, balcony, patio or garden, everyone can try to grow something edible. Potatoes, chillies, tomatoes, herbs and strawberries are good things to start with.

Peat Free & Eco Compost Demand for sustainable compost has been growing over the last year or so. Choosing the right compost means stronger, healthier plants and bigger, better harvests. There is a wide selection of eco-friendly, peat-free and reduced-peat composts for growing fruit and veg, to planting up containers and hanging baskets.

The classic English Cottage Garden has never gone out of fashion. Wildlife Garden Many people are pruning and mowing less, or leaving a patch of their garden wild to create a haven for birds, bees, butterflies and hedgehogs. To encourage wildlife into your garden, add wildflowers, bird feeders, a hedgehog home or bug hotel, and leave out fresh water if you don’t have a pond. Use less artificial hard landscaping and add more plants to create a biodiversity for wildlife to thrive. Also consider adding a ‘hedgehog’ hole in your fencing to allow hedgehogs to travel in and out of gardens in search of food.

Zen Garden More so than ever, the garden will be a place to relax and escape this year. Plants such as acers, eucalyptus and bamboo will give a Zen-like feel to gardens, and expect to see contemporary metal sculptures for the garden as well as wall art.

White Garden For the ultimate in sophistication and if you want your flowers to illuminate your evenings a white garden could be the answer. A quick look at social media will show you why this is so on trend. Choose a dark backdrop, deep green foliage or a dark fence, and add some eye-catching white flowers to fill the space such as delphiniums, rhododendrons, roses or scented jasmine.

Bring the inside out Gardens are rooms to decorate, so just as you would invest in a new sofa or table for the home. Expect to see more modular furniture that can easily change depending on the number of guests. And outdoor dining is a trend that continues to increase in popularity, with people buying bigger and better BBQ’s, and even pizza ovens for their garden.

The Mediterranean Garden Missing the Med? Bring a touch to your garden by including a selection of plants and herbs to give a laid-back vibe. Use architectural plants such as palm trees, cypress and yuccas to add height and drama. For beautiful scent plant jasmine or lavender, and add agapanthus, osteospermum or ceanothus for a splash of colour. As well as looking good they are low maintenance, requiring little watering. News from the Ashdown Forest Ashdown Forest is more important than ever, with recovering habitats providing shelter for record numbers of birds, butterflies, and everything else that makes the forest so special. Ashdown Forest is Common Land, and everyone is free to enjoy the peace and quiet and wide-open spaces it provides.

Every year sees more people using Ashdown forest for a growing range of activities. We are proud that the forest enriches people’s lives, but rapidly increasing visitor numbers presents new and complex challenges that can be costly to solve.

The rangers and volunteers are working harder than ever to protect the forest and keep it safe for visitors and for its wildlife. They care for the livestock that graze the forest to improve the heathland habitat. They monitor wildlife, keeping tabs on rare or unusual species.

Without public support much of this is would not be possible.

More visitors means greater management costs.

But, as with many organisations, funding has diminished during the pandemic, especially with the forest centre closed to the public.

Understanding how beneficial creative activities are to the wellbeing of residents who are not getting out much, I started a sketch club, hoping this might help peace of mind.

And so, the weekly cycle continues hopefully resulting in a closer awareness of our surroundings, an enthusiasm

Volunteer Drivers Urgently Required Age Concern Uckfield and District offer a free transport service to the elderly who have no transport of their own and live in the TN22 area to attend doctor and hospital appointments. At present we are also offering transport to covid 19 vaccination centres.

Our charity has been going for over twenty-five years with volunteer drivers who get paid up to fifty pence per mile.

The number of drivers we have at the moment are not able to keep up with demand from our service users in their time of need. The Cuckoo Trail Not far from the Ashdown Forest area is a fantastic trail used by cyclists, walkers and dog walkers, which starts at Heathfield.

Last year cycling had an exponential growth in popularity, so we thought some of our readers might appreciate this.

The cuckoo trail runs for 11 miles along the route of the old railway linking Heathfield, Hailsham and Polegate. Opened in 1880, the railway was named the Cuckoo Line after the tradition that the first cuckoo of spring was always heard at the Heathfield Fair. As transporting of goods by road became more popular, the line was shut in the 1960s, as part of the Beeching cuts.

What you will find A green corridor with a host of natural wildlife. Some verges are managed for wild flowers, and trees cut to allow light to reach the ground. Other areas are wooded and shady. There are good views of the surrounding countryside.

There are sculptures in wood and steel, plus other artwork to look out for. Don’t miss the Victorian’s engineering skills in the brick arch bridges, between Hellingly and Horam and a most striking example at Heathfield Tunnel.

The site is host to an array of wildlife. In May, look for butterflies such as the orange-tip. You might even see bullfinch, lesser whitethroat, cuckoos or weasels.

Listen for the laughing call of the green woodpecker and a host of other birds. There’s also wild garlic at several places with its pungent aroma. In early summer, orchids grow near path edges and under trees.

Listen for the distinctive call of the cuckoo from April to June.

Stops along the way Heathfield The market town of Heathfield stands on one of the main ridges of the High Weald AONB, giving magnificent views towards the South Downs. It gained its market charter in 1316 which included the right to hold a fair,

Thankfully, when it comes to the pastime we all love, the future of shopping is bright - and it will be exciting to see what this seismic change looks like.

Sustainable humanwear…

Last year I predicted gender fluid fashion would be on the rise. It was - and it still very much is.

In Spring, we saw designers - such as Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney - launch unisex capsules, and this will continue to filter down to the high street.

Instead of focusing on sex, collections will be launched based on activities - ranges will encourage like-minded people to come together; building a community.

The fallout from the pandemic will also include fast fashion. Many cheap items are only bought because they are seen as a bargain - and an item that can easily be thrown away.

If browsing in-store is restricted, so will the sales of these clothes which do end up ‘costing the earth’.

Outdoor shopping malls?

What we could look forward to seeing are outdoor shopping areas, pop-up market places - post - the pandemic 19, people will be less likely to congregate indoors. So, brands will need to get creative.

Large stores could be replaced by smaller spaces; so shops could simply be a hub for collections and pickup; with the rest of the space used for digital engagement, or entertainment.

Stores will need to find a way to entice people to put down their online shopping and visit a shop - something that we all love to do - and this will be by offering something

experiential, rather than rails of clothes that they no longer want shoppers to handle.

Hopefully we will see a revival of the high street - more independent and crafty stores opening in smaller spaces; large, excellently designed window displays showcasing the best products, so we can leisurely gaze and imagine, without having to step foot inside.

Recipes for Kids These are super-simple, healthy recipes that you can make with kids of all ages.

CHERRY BERRY CRUMBLE RECIPE INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 200g frozen cherries

1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan oven 160C, gas mark 4.

• 200g frozen summer fruits

2. Put the frozen cherries and berries into a baking dish (there’s no need to thaw them).

• 150g plain flour • 75g butter

3. Put the flour into a large mixing bowl and add the butter, rubbing it in with your fingertips until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the porridge oats and sugar.

• 30g porridge oats • 1 tbsp demerara or granulated sugar • 12 tbsp plain yoghurt, to serve

4. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit. Place the dish on a baking tray and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.

Serve with 2 tablespoons of yoghurt per person.

One of our local residents is celebrating sustainable fashion in a big way on social media. Anna Kilpatrick, 47, of Forest Row, started her online Instagram account @not.needing. new just over a year ago. Valentine’s Day & Lupercalia Though some historians believe that Valentine's Day commemorates the death of St. Valentine on February 14th, others believe that the holiday actually has its origins in a Pagan fertility festival called "Lupercalia," which was celebrated on February 15th in ancient Rome. Dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus, the day was celebrated by sacrificing animals and smacking women with animal hides, a practice that was believed to encourage fertility. During the festival men chose a woman’s name from a jar to be coupled with them for the duration. Often, the couple stayed together until the following year’s festival - many fell in love and married.

Unlike Valentine’s Day, however, Lupercalia

was a bloody, violent and sexually-charged celebration awash with animal sacrifice, random matchmaking and coupling in the hopes of warding off evil spirits and infertility.
