“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS
Dear Residents, Welcome to the March issue. At last spring is just around the corner! This month, by co-incidence, we have various local charitable causes with their stories and requests featured. We also bring you a really fabulous local walk for those warmer spring days we’ve all been looking forward to. Plus there is a great competition to win a family ticket for Pub in the Park this summer, in Tunbridge Wells. As this is Pooh Country, Egmont has sent us a rundown of the latest Winnie the Pooh book releases that include words of wisdom for the bear himself, especially for adults. We hope our community magazine and local business directory can be of use to you this spring with your home and garden goals. Thank you for supporting local business. If you are a charity or community group and you need promotion, please drop us a line any time. All the best for a lovely March, Tally & Chris

THE FOREST ROW FESTIVAL IS BACK! 2019 sees the return of the Forest Row Festival. Like all the best festivals it took a fallow year in 2018 but returns with renewed energy and excitement during the weekend of 20th-22nd September. Over the last 20 years the festival has grown from a get-together on Foresters Green to celebrate the end of the annual Forest Row Bike Ride into a wide-ranging celebration of all the things that make Forest Row a fantastic and unique place to live. As with previous years the focus of festivities for most people is likely to be Foresters Green, hosting local musicians and performers. Forest Row is such a haven of talent that the organisers estimate that over 80% of the acts are from the village and its surrounding area. Also in common with previous years the festival will provide the same focal point for community groups and charities to gain exposure, including the Pericles training-and-work project for young people and adults with
special learning needs and/or mental health problems, the Singing Mamas community choir, Sussex Youth Dance and the Forest Row Orchestra. The unofficial theme is ‘inclusivity’ with the organisers very keen to engage all of the community to run events large and small. In previous years, community art projects, nature walks, exhibitions, workshops, concerts, film shows, children’s music and dance displays could be seen/participated in. The aspiration for this year is to
encourage people from all walks of life to organise an even broader array of events. If you have an idea, the team are here to help you nurture it and publicise it. In the spirit of expanding the range of activities, the marquee will be available for community events on the Wednesday or Thursday night. If you know of someone who wants to host a play, classical music concert or something similar then the festival would love to hear from you. As well as organising events around the village, there are still some roles free on the organising committee. We are always on the look-out for volunteers to donate a few hours of their time to help make sure everyone has a great weekend. If you want to get involved, running an event, volunteering, performing, or joining the organising committee, you can contact the team via enquiries@forestrowfestival. org.uk. Thank you!

Latest Winnie-the-Pooh book releases, Ashdown Forest’s favourite son
© 2019 Disney Enterprises, Inc. Based on the ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ works by A.A.Milne and E.H.Shepard. Text by A.A.Milne copyright © 1924-1928 Trustees of the Pooh Properties. Line illustrations copyright © 1924-1928 E.H.Shepard
At the end of 2018 four beautifully presented, brand-new Winnie-the-Pooh books for adults were released which showcase the warmth and wit of Milne’s words and Shepard’s illustrations:
Winnie-the-Pooh: Deep Thoughts & Ponderings for the Wise ‘Pooh hasn’t much Brain, but he never comes to any harm. He does silly things and they turn out right. There’s Owl. Owl hasn’t exactly got Brain, but he Knows Things.’ Winnie-the-Pooh may be a Bear of Very Little Brain, but he sometimes has surprisingly astute and helpful observations on life. Full of thingish thoughts and clever plans, perfect for deep thinkers and the philosophically inclined.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Doubt & Disquiet for Worriers ‘What?’ said Piglet, with a jump. And then, to show that he hadn’t been frightened, he jumped up and down once or twice in an exercising sort of way. It’s hardly surprising that Piglet, a Very Small Animal, should find the Hundred Acre Wood a rather alarming place. Full of nervously twitching ears and an extreme lack of pluck, perfect for those of an anxious disposition.
E4243_WTP_Advertorials_V2.indd 1
Winnie-the-Pooh: Gloom & Doom for Pessimists Piglet explained to Tigger that he mustn’t mind what Eeyore said because he was always gloomy; and Eeyore explained to Piglet that, on the contrary, he was feeling particularly cheerful this morning. Eeyore is one of Winnie-the-Pooh’s most deepthinking friends. If you have a similarly cynical friend or indeed view life as a glass half empty, these contemplations are for you.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Little Somethings & Smackerels for Food Lovers ‘What do you like doing best in the world, Pooh?’ ‘What I like best in the whole world is Me and Piglet going to see You, and You saying, ‘What about a little something?’ and Me saying, ‘Well, I shouldn’t mind a little something, should you, Piglet.’ Winnie-the-Pooh has never been shy about his love of good food especially when his friends offer him a little smackerel of something or other.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Tiddely pom: Rhymes and hums to enjoy together Everyone’s favourite rhymes and hums from the Bear of Very Little Brain have been gathered here in this beautifully-illustrated first board book. Original text by A. A. Milne with charming new illustrations in the new nursery artwork style. Coming May 2019.
Winnie-the-Pooh’s 50 Things to do on rainy days “It rained and it rained and it rained. Piglet told himself that never in all his life, and he was goodness knows how old – three, was it, or four? – never had he seen so much rain. Days and days and days.” The friends of the Hundred Acre Wood have 50 things to try on rainy days. Join them as they build a rain gauge, find Eeyore’s tail and take part in a scavenger hunt. With step-bystep instructions plus room for drawings and photos of your adventures, this handbook is filled with perfect ideas for the greyest of days. Coming April 2019. A busy year for the donkeys school children and veterinary students at the Nablus clinic. In the long term, the only way to improve the condition of the animals is to give the owners the enthusiasm and skills to look after them.” Wendy ends by saying, “We rely entirely on donations from the public, if we are to continue our vital work. Every penny we receive is so vital to us and we would be so grateful if any Ashdown Living readers could support us.”
At Christmas 2017, we told you about Wivelsfieldbased charity Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land which cares for donkeys in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. It’s been a while since we spoke to the Safe Haven team so we decided to catch up with them to see what’s been going on: “The sanctuary in Israel has been very busy” Wendy Ahl from the charity tells us. “We have rescued several more donkeys from the streets where we found them as strays. Sadly, some of them have been so ill that we have had no option but to put them gently to sleep but at least they had some love and care at the end. Others are doing well with us – one donkey was pregnant when she came to the sanctuary so we are expecting the patter of tiny hooves in the summer. Looking after 270 donkeys is hard work and we are so grateful to our dedicated staff.” Wendy adds, “Our work in the Palestinian Territories has also been incredibly busy. As well as our clinic in the city of Nablus, thanks to the generosity of one of our supporters we have recently been able to buy a vehicle to adapt and use as a mobile clinic. Our team are now visiting 4 different locations every week, offering free veterinary care to working donkeys, mules and horses as well as providing advice and support to their owners. Veterinary students from the nearby university often join the mobile clinic on visits and we continue to host groups of

My name is Joe James and I am autistic. I took up photography last September to help me with my anxiety and depression. It took me to another world, where no-one judged or ostracized me. I could escape into nature and be at peace. The whole process from the journey to take the photos, to taking them and experiencing the beauty around me, then going home to look at them on my tablet and making them the way I see the world, is both calming and incredibly enjoyable. Ashdown forest is one of my favourite places to go, the forest is magical and full of history. Using my photography I spread autism awareness and show the world that autism is a superpower not a disability. IMPROVING YOUR SMILE CAN NEVER BE WRONG! At the local Riverview Dental Centre in Forest Row there are many services offered to patients, quite aside from regular dental work. For instance, dental implants which are titanium root replacements, inserted into the jaw bone, used to support an artificial tooth. When insufficient tooth remains to restore a tooth, a dental implant is often a better option. Such implants can also be used to support dentures. Here is a short Q&A with Dr. Patel of the Riverview Dental Centre to find out more. What services over and above usual dentistry can you offer clients? The key additional services we provide are implants, cosmetic adult orthodontics (straightening) and cosmetic makeovers. With 10 years’ experience in providing both implants and teeth straightening, I am highly qualified in the both fields. The implant system we use is Neoss, which is a global-research based system with a high success rate.
formulate a custom-made plan. If your teeth need aligning, Invisalign braces are a clear removable alternative to traditional wire braces for all ages to slowly straighten teeth. Six Month Smiles and Cfast braces are aesthetic white wire braces which are discrete. What feedback do you get from your clients after having received said services?
What advice would you give to people considering any cosmetic dentistry?
Patients are very impressed with the results and the vast improvements. It has changed people’s lives, giving them confidence to smile again and enjoy eating all the foods they love! This gives me great satisfaction and is the biggest reason I love my job.
In all fields of dentistry good oral hygiene is imperative to long term success, especially when considering advanced treatments. We provide a free consultation to explore all the patient options, and

Magical Place?
Imagine you were offered lifetime admission to a vast, enchanting park – a place where paths wind through woods and slopes, past streams, waterfalls, hidden gardens and magnificent views, a place whose wildlife and landscape can set your spirits soaring. Most of us would probably be willing to pay a small admission charge for all this wouldn’t we?
The reason is simple: the forest is losing public grants of £60,000 which help pay for its maintenance, from clearing up fly-tipping to cutting back dangerous roadside trees, keeping car parks in good order to managing livestock.

In fact, there’s no charge to enjoy Ashdown Forest (which at the moment offers all these things and more) and there won’t be. But if you’d like to keep the forest the way you love it, the time has come to consider making a donation for its upkeep.
Unless the guardians of the forest, the conservators, can raise this money elsewhere the forest will start to lose some of its shine. That’s why they are now urgently appealing for donations from everyone who appreciates and enjoys the unique qualities of Ashdown Forest. Whether you are an occasional stroller or a regular dog-walker, a horse-rider or a nature-watcher, a picnicker or someone who scampers across the forest with the kids – please pause and think whether your life would be worse without it. And if the answer to that question is yes, why not donate? Even small contributions of a

LOCALLY BASED CHARITY
Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Open Hands is a locally based (Hadlow Down) charity which works with children and their families living in extreme poverty in Romania. We support marginalised families to escape the poverty-cycle and encourage their inclusion into society to lead independent and fulfilling lives. The Ashdown Forest Living has been featuring this charity since 2010 during its early years, and many readers have been very supportive during that time. Here, we bring you an update: Dear Ashdown Forest Readers, I would like to report on a beautiful project we are currently running called, The Rainbow House (RH). The RH was opened almost three years ago. It is a place where children who live in the local slums can come and receive care. Last year The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation recognised the wonderful work that is done there by donating to the project. I would describe the RH as a warm, homely place with a peaceful atmosphere. Seeing the children, one can tell that they enjoy every
minute of being there. The RH is a stark contrast to their home lives in the slum. Before we opened the project all the children knew was life in the slum, living next to a rubbish dump. There are no paved roads, running water or sanitary systems. Children, living there, are left to their own devices and parents have no form of education. Children are never washed and families have no sense of hygiene. Food is scarce, so many go hungry. You may be able to imagine what amazement these children felt when they first
walked into the RH, a place that is clean, offers food and showers and has lots of toys. At the beginning the children were at a loss of what to do with these toys, they had never played with any. They decided that the way you play is to pile the toys on top of each other. Our kind RH staff watched in bemusement and then sat down on the floor next to the children and gently showed them how to play. It is hard to imagine, but this was their reality. We love to celebrate children’s birthdays at the RH. One day it was little Maria’s birthday… she had never celebrated her birthday before. When she came in and saw that a party was prepared, she asked astonished: ‘Who is getting married?’. The love and care the children receive at the RH is daily changing their lives. Over the past three years we have seen how children who have never eaten at a table

with cutlery developed beautiful table manners; children who have never held pens in their hands, knowing how to colour and write; children who never went to school have become hungry learners, involved in school life; children who never had a shower learnt the importance of hygiene. It is wonderful to see the profound changes that take place when someone cares and loves them. We want to be there for these children in the long run. We want to enable them to break the generational cycles of poverty and deprivation by educating, guiding, loving and caring for them.
