“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Dear Residents, This month, for some reason our focus is upon a handful of grand estates in the larger area. This is entirely coincidental, we can assure you! Although slightly outside the area, one of our features is about Knole, which has undergone some incredible restoration these last few years, garnering national interest - for more information about why, see our article. There is also a lovely, viewfilled walk around Scotney Castle that can be enjoyed in the better weather. One man has chosen Ashdown Forest as the perfect place for capturing some incredible night-sky images, for a taster of his work see our feature. We hope you enjoy reading our magazine this month! And that you can find all the local businesses you need for your home and garden goals. Thank you for feedback, it is all welcome. All the best for a lovely May. Tally & Chris

HORSTED KEYNES, VILLAGE SWEET SHOP - C.1960
LINDFIELD GOOD NEWS STORY: Rescued Ducklings We were called on 13th April by a lady who was very upset. She had witnessed a duck being drowned by 4 amorous drakes leaving 12 day old ducklings orphaned. When we arrived most of them were sitting on the bank of the pond which was a great opportunity to catch them. After gaining permission to enter the pond area we approached quietly and managed to net 7 of them. The others leapt into the pond and swam off towards the other ducks. These in-turn started attacking the ducklings as they were not related. After trying for two hours to encourage the last 6 to the side of the pond we had to give up as we needed to get the ones we had caught under a heat lamp. It was not a
decision we wanted to make but the last ones were not going to get off the water and had been in there so long, they were not likely to survive much longer. We left a message with the caller that we were leaving them and she said she would put a message out to anyone who may be able to keep an eye on them. We got the 7 home and under a lamp they immediately tucked into their food and then
cuddled down for a rest. About an hour later I got a call from another lady to say she and her children had managed to catch the others - all but one- who succumbed to the cold. What fantastic news. I rushed over with our portable incubator as they would be hypothermic by now. When I arrived they had kept them warm and they didn’t look too bad at all. They are all now doing well and growing by the day. Once they have all their adult feathers we will return them to the pond. Forest Star-Gazing
The beautiful night skies of Ashdown Forest have encouraged one man, David A Cocklin, to experiment with astrophotography, resulting in some incredible images. Here is his story: ‘When I was a young boy at a boarding school in West Hoathly, we sometimes slept outside in the summer months. I would look up into the sky and was amazed by the number of stars. So, I got myself a little pocket book by Patrick Moore (of East Grinstead) to learn the constellations. When I was a bit older and left the school, I joined the Croydon astronomy group and used to go up to the telescope
in Kenley. I always wanted to photograph an object in the sky. I got myself a telescope and for years I was only observing. Then I got myself a DSLR Camera, and I found that I could attach it to a telescope and take photos of the night sky with
a lens. I was wondering about a location that had dark skies, and remembered the Ashdown Forest from my childhood. I found myself a nice spot to take photos, that I have been using for some years now. The forest is good for the east and south, which is best for taking astro-photos as you can see the constellations rising from the east. Over the years the light pollution has become worse. This is mainly from East Grinstead and Haywards Heath. Gatwick Airport has become a problem for all night planes, sometimes 10 to 20 planes circle round the forest, with some flying right over which causes a lot of my photos to be wasted. The equipment I use is a small

single arm telescope drive and a modified DSLR camera with a lens. I am a self-taught astro-photographer, and some things I do differently as I find my own ways. These images take hours of work, I take a lot of photos of 1 object and stack them in software, then use the software to bring out the data and colour, just to show you do not need a telescope or expensive equipment to take a photo of the sky. If a telescope says WOW Power on the box, stay clear of this. You do not always need power, you need light from the sky. Some of these objects are much larger than the full moon in the sky, we just cannot see them. If you decide to take up this hobby, I wish you all the best for fantastic astro results.’ Find David on Twitter @ David_A_Cocklin or facebook. com/davidallancocklin

Sheffield Park House
Many locals will have experienced the beauties and wonder of the National Trust’s Sheffield Park Gardens. But what of the stately, magnificent house that one can glance up at, from which the garden slopes gently down to the lakes?
In private ownership, the house was sold in 1953 and split into 12 large, luxurious apartments in the 1980s. One would like to believe this would be unheard of today, as such a treasure would have remained intact for progeny, the house and garden being of equal beauty and historical interest for all. The rich and varied history of the Sheffield Park Estate can be traced prior to 1066, when it was owned by Edwin of Wessex, father to King Harold. Following Harold’s defeat by William
the Conqueror, the estate was given to Robert, Count of Mortain, Earl of Cornwall and William’s brother-in-law, and is recorded in the Domesday Book as the Estate of “Sifelle”. In August 1538, Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, entertained Henry VIII there. By 1700, the Deer Park had been partially formalised by Lord De La Warr who planted avenues of trees radiating
from the house and cleared areas to establish lawns. However, in the late 1700s, when the estate was acquired by the 1st Earl of Sheffield, James Wyatt; he had the house remodelled in the fashionable Gothic style. Capability Brown was commissioned to landscape the gardens, followed by Humphry Repton in 17891790. In 1769, the estate was sold to John Holroyd, created Baron Sheffield in 1781. The garden itself is a horticultural work of art formed through centuries of landscape design. At the heart are four lakes with paths circulating through the glades and wooded areas surrounding them. The River Ouse runs across the bottom of the parkland; this area has been transformed into a wildlife haven.

SHEFFIELD PARK HOUSE CONTINUED
Albert and a close friend of Henry Holroyd, 3rd Earl of Sheffield; the Prince used the Tyger Room as his bedroom during his frequent visits to Sheffield Park.
The Ashdown Forest Living has come across a rare opportunity to have a ‘glimpse’ at the stunning interior of the house. Not open to public view, an apartment of definite historical significance has recently come on to the market and we are able to share a couple of photos with you: Apartment 3 occupies the first and second floors of the north eastern portion of the House. This apartment has many stunning and elegant period features including the superbly restored wood

framed cathedral window in the sitting room and master bedroom. But of particular note is the stunning formal reception room known as the “Tyger Room”. Originally believed to be a hunting trophy room, its magnificent ceiling was intricately painted with big game by Charles Catton the Elder (1728 – 1798), a founder member of the Royal Academy of Arts. The room later became known as “The Princes Room”, in honour of Edward, Prince of Wales, eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince
Quote “There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not Man the less, but Nature more.” Lord Byron
The Tyger Room has since been beautifully restored, with plasterwork details delicately picked out in gold leaf; the Pietro Bossi chimney piece is a superb and rare example of Catton’s work with marble and coloured paste inlay (“scagliola”), with a spectacular triple bay window to boot. In the sitting room there is a beautiful Georgian wooden fireplace, set with a wood burning stove, and a striking cathedral window framing the wonderful views across the lakes to Fletching church. We hope you enjoy this rare glance into the interior of the house as much as we do. With thanks to Savills, Haywards Heath, for providing content. “LET US AWAKE” by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum It’s been 100 years since the very first woman, Lady Astor, was elected to parliament in 1919; it seems fitting that a tribute is paid to our local suffragist, Dame Margery Corbett Ashby of Danehill, who stood several times for East Grinstead, but was never elected. Her contribution to the rights of women is, nevertheless, vital. This article ties in with a temporary exhibition at the museum, until June, focusing on the role of suffragettes and suffragists within the area. Margery Irene Corbett was born on May 15th 1882 in Danehill. Her parents, Charles and Marie Corbett, were both strong Liberals and supporters of women’s rights. They often travelled to East Grinstead (then the most important town of the constituency of the same name) where they made speeches on the subject. East Grinstead was then a staunchly Conservative town and their audiences were frequently hostile. Margery was to say later in her life, “my parents, as Liberals, were at that period, as hated and distrusted by the gentry as communists are today.” Coming from this background, it is unsurprising that Margery and her
younger sister, Cicely, also became involved. Together with friends they formed the Young Suffragists. Suffragists were less aggressive, but equally determined to enfranchise women as the more militant Suffragettes, who made more headlines. Educated at home, Margery was accepted for Newnham College, Cambridge, where she joined the National Union of Women Suffrage Societies. After leaving university she took a place at a teacher training college but never taught, as her time was increasingly taken up by the suffrage movement. She became secretary of many groups and societies with this aim. She married Brian Ashby in 1910. He was a barrister and was a great supporter of her work. The next year she and Cicely formed the East Grinstead branch of the
Suffrage Society. A survey in the same year showed that less than 20% of the women in the town supported votes for women! At a public meeting in the Queens Hall in July 1922, the Countess de la Warr was elected president of the society and Margery and her sister, now Cicely Corbett Fisher, were on the committee. The common desire of these siblings to retain their own identity through the continued use of their maiden names, (albeit, in conjunction with their husband’s surnames) was unusual at this period. At the general election of 1906, Charles Corbett won an unexpected victory over the Conservative candidate. It was what we now would think of as a one-issue campaign, though Corbett would no doubt have thought his liberal views were now being espoused

LET US AWAKE CONTINUED
by the voters of East Grinstead - all male, of course. The truth was that there was universal disquiet with the Education Act of 1902 which made the teaching of the Anglican religion mandatory in all schools, not just those run by the Church of England. This was very unpopular in East Grinstead, which had a strong non-conformist tradition. Corbett promised it would be repealed if the Liberals formed the government. It is the only occasion when the constituency of East Grinstead had not returned a Conservative Member to Westminster. Once there, Charles Corbett spoke strongly for women’s rights. In 1913 he, together with the Reverend G. Riddell and the Reverend R. Strong, formed the East Grinstead branch of the Men’s League for Women’s Rights. This was disbanded at the start of the war. In 1914 Margery’s only child, a son, Michael George Ashby, was born. Co-inciding with the outbreak of World War I, Margery’s energies were temporarily concentrated on her child and the war effort. She worked in hospitals as a volunteer, for the four years of its duration. The end of the war saw the Qualification of Women Act, which gave women over thirty the right to vote. This was a step in the right direction and led to the election in 1919, of the first woman to the Houses of Parliament, Lady Astor. 1928 saw the suffrage extended to all women over twenty-one. Full political equality with men was however, the next goal. Margery, herself, stood at every election from then, until 1935 and again at by-elections in 1937 and 1934. She was unsuccessful in all of them, but her real aim was to encourage other women to come forward as candidates rather than to become an MP herself. Her interests had always been wider than just women’s emancipation. A friend wrote of her saying, “she also fought for civil liberties, freetrade, international goodwill and democracy.” She went as a delegate to The Versailles Peace Conference of the International Alliance of Women. She was elected President of the International Women’s Suffrage Alliance
in 1923 and stayed in that position until she retired in 1946. In 1932 she travelled to Geneva as the British delegate for Disarmament. She was a signatory on a letter asserting that war could be averted if the League of Nations took more positive action. War was inevitable at this point, however, and she quietly worked throughout the duration in many voluntary roles. After the war she became politically active again and was awarded the DBE by the Queen for her services to women in 1967. Dame Margery went on her last demonstration, in London in 1980, at the age of 98. She died the following year, just a month after her 99th birthday. During her long and active life, she used her gift of being a rousing and passionate speaker to draw others to her many causes. Her strong religious belief and her family heritage made her one of the best-known women of her generation in this area. From sharing a platform with the Pankhursts at the turn of the twentieth century she went on to work for many different causes. As she said in one of her inspirational speeches: “Let us awake and determine women shall enter the machine to direct it for the defence of democracy.”

Scotney Castle Walk
This walk is a short way outside of the Ashdown Forest area, but the views will be wonderful this Spring, so we wanted to share!
Start: Scotney Castle Car Park (grid ref: TQ688353). Dog friendly. About 1 hour, 2 miles. Moderate terrain. 1. At the bottom of the car park follow the road to the right, passing the view of the new house on your left. At the corner head towards the large white Salvin gate. Please be careful as there may be traffic on this section. Go through the Salvin gate and onto the old carriageway. Follow the old carriageway to the bridge at the bottom of the field. The large white gate at the top of the carriageway was designed by Anthony Salvin, the man who designed the new house at Scotney. The gate was designed to be self-closing from either direction ensuring that the footman could leave the gate to close itself. The old carriageway was abandoned as the horses would look tired on arriving at the new house after pulling the carriage up the hill. This was undesirable so the new carriageway was built which would bring the
carriages downhill and the horses would arrive in a more presentable manner. 2. The stream which runs under this bridge is called the Sweetbourne. This small stream feeds the moat which surrounds the old castle. From the bridge continue on the old carriageway, go through the gate and head towards the next bridge. Look to the left before the next bridge for a glimpse of the old castle. The river which flows under this bridge is the River Bewl. The Bewl reservoir is a short distance from Scotney. This bridge is interesting as from a carriage you would imagine the entire bridge
was built of expensive sandstone with the owners showing off their wealth; however, look over the bridge to see the lower half built of cheaper bricks. From the bridge go through the gate and walk up the hill until you reach the fingerpost. 3. From the fingerpost turn left and follow the bluetopped posts across the field. On reaching the blue post marked with an eight look to the right to see the gnarly old hornbeam pollard. Continue over the crest of the field towards the gap in the fence line. The hornbeam pollard is one of the oldest trees on the estate and is estimated to be around 600 years

old. Pollards are trees which are cut at around 6ft (1.8m) high. This would have been done on a rotation and used as a crop for timber, fuel and fodder. Pollards would have been created in areas with grazing animals. By cutting them at 6ft the stock would not have been able to eat the new growth. Pollarding, if done correctly, can significantly increase the lifespan of the tree. 4. Go through the gap and continue straight on along the edge of the woodland pasture. Stop halfway along this field and take in the iconic view of the new house and old castle, there is a well-positioned log here to rest your feet a while. Carry on until you come to the gateway. Before construction of the new house began in 1837, Edward Hussey spent many months looking at suitable locations to ensure that what he created would fit into the beautiful picturesque landscape that you can see before you today. Edward Hussey sited the new House 27yd (25m) above the old castle for the spectacular views over the garden, towards the woodland that is behind you, forming an Arcadian backdrop to this carefully composed picture. 5. From the gateway continue to the next blue post. As you near the post, the tops of the oasts should come into view. Continue across the field until you reach the bridge. From here you can just see the tops of the Oast House of Little Scotney Farm, the last working Hop Garden and Oast that Scotney owns. The oasts were built in 1871, are grade II listed, and are still used to dry the hops that are grown and picked at Little
Scotney Farm. These hops are picked by gangs of pickers who would traditionally bag the hops up into hessian sacks known as pockets, taken to the oast where the hops are spread out across the floor to be dried by hot air from a wood or charcoalfired kiln at the bottom of the oast. 6. After crossing the bridge go through the field to the next gate. Go through the gate and follow the hedge line up the field towards the gate on the road. Before going through the gate, sit on the bench and admire the view of the historic parkland. At the road turn left for approx. 110yd (100m), then turn right over the stile into the field. The parkland at Scotney is grade I listed and is also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The cattle you see grazing the parkland are Sussex cattle. With the Kent/Sussex border once being the Bewl River, these would have been the native breed for this area. The browse line on the trees indicate the history of cattle being present. During the time of Christopher Hussey, the cattle were regular prize winners at agricultural shows. This breed reputedly lives on fresh air and good views. 7. Follow the hedge line around the field, continuing to the stile at the top of the field. Walk along the top of the field following the blue posts, at post marked 24, stop and look at the bomb craters to your right. Carry on walking past the bomb craters and turn left at the fingerpost. Walk down the hill towards the stile in the right-hand corner of the field.

During the Battle of Britain, the skies over Scotney saw many air battles. Local residents recall two cottages near the Scotney timber yard being destroyed by enemy doodlebug and there is a story of the German plane which crashed onto the Scotney hop gardens. The pilot was buried in the village churchyard and his remains were returned to his homeland after the war had ended. 8. Over the stile turn left and follow the old servant’s entrance. Turn right onto the road, after approx. 55yd (50m) turn right through
the old barn. Home Farm barn is an oak-framed openfronted structure with weather boards on the walls, with a hipped and pitched roof made from plain peg tiles. The oak timber stands on sandstone footings. Studies show that the barn dates between 1842 and 1852 and was originally located down in the garden by the old castle. 9. After going through the old barn, you have arrived back at the car park. With thanks to the Scotney Castle Š

A House for the
Centuries Originally built as an archbishop’s palace, Knole is a country house situated within Knole Park, a 1000-acre park located just north of Tunbridge Wells. It passed through royalty to the famous Sackville family (who still live there today) as their main seat, having been the major landowners of the wider area. The house itself, apparently ranks in the top five of England's largest houses, occupying a total of four acres in itself. Vita Sackville-West, who grew up there, recounts a legend that it is a calendar house: 'its seven courtyards correspond to the days of the week, its fifty-two staircases to the weeks of the year, its three hundred and sixtyfive rooms to the days of the year, but I do not know that anyone has ever troubled to verify it.' It dates back to the mid-15th century, with
major additions in the 16th and, particularly, the early 17th centuries. In recent years Knole has undergone a major £19.8million building and conservation project, Inspired by Knole, which started in 2012. The restored showrooms have just re-opened this spring and visitors can once again view all 15 of the newly-conserved historic rooms in their entirety. A highlight includes the Spangle Bedroom with its state bed and magnificent textiles embellished with hundreds of silver gilt sequins, rivalled only by the James II bed in the Venetian Bedroom. Art lovers will find much to admire with Reynolds’, Gainsborough’s and Van Dyck’s. Knole is one of the most important historic houses in the whole of Britain and in fact, the

‘showrooms’ are so-called because for the last 400 years they have been open to visitors rather than inhabited regularly as family rooms! A very early model for the idea of sharing history and art with the wider public, as now embodied by the National Trust, among other bodies. One of the sources of its incredible collection of Stuart furniture is down to Charles, 6th Earl of Dorset (1638-1706); he used the privileges of his office as Lord Chamberlain to acquire furniture and textiles no longer required by the royal palace at Whitehall. Combine this with the 17th-century marriage of Richard, 5th Earl of Dorset into the wealthy Cranfield family, and the 3rd Duke’s 18th-century buying spree of Old Masters during his grand tour to Italy, and one has a truly unique collection.
The nearly forgotten domestic attics are also restored and open to visitors for the very first time. They have garnered much and varied attention in recent years due to witch marks found gouged into wooden ceiling joists with a knife. These may have been easily overlooked but for the building’s archaeologists who found and studied
the vertical and horizontal markings, more than 400 years after they were carved. Ritual protection was obviously very much on the cards in early 17th-century England and a pet obsession of James I who was a muchhonoured guest at Knole. An excavation under the floorboards also revealed 17th century letters, including one dated October 1633

LATROBE & HAMMERWOOD HOUSE by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum Just north of Ashdown Forest is the hamlet of Hammerwood. The large house there, Hammerwood House, was the first large project of Benjamin Latrobe who was to become the Father of American Architecture. Together with the nearby Ashdown House, it is the only independent legacy of architectural interest left in England by this eminent architect, before his emigration to America in 1795. Benjamin Henry Latrobe was born near Leeds on May 1st 1764. His father, also Benjamin, was a leader in the Moravian church who was a Huguenot of French Protestant ancestry, he was responsible for all Moravian schools and establishments in Britain, with an extensive circle of friends in the higher ranks of society. While his father stressed the importance of education, Latrobe's mother, who was born in Pennsylvania, instilled in her son a curiosity and interest in America. In his teens Benjamin Jnr. studied in a Moravian college in Saxony, he served for a short time in the Austrian Imperial Army, suffering injuries and illness. After his recovery he embarked on a continental ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe, visiting France and Italy among other places. Through his education and travels, Latrobe mastered many languages including German, French, ancient and modern Greek, and Latin. He had advanced ability in Italian and Spanish and some knowledge of Hebrew. From a young age, Benjamin Henry Latrobe enjoyed drawing landscapes and buildings, so on returning to England he worked with John Smeaton, the engineer who built the Eddystone lighthouse, before going into practice on his own, in 1790. Naturally, his classical travels influenced his style of Greek Revival Gothic which was then in its nascent days and of which Latrobe was a strong, and
founding propronent. He married Lydia Sellon, the daughter of a wealthy businessman in 1790 and they had a daughter and a son before she died in childbirth in 1793. A year earlier in 1792, Latrobe had been commissioned to design Hammerwood House, which was his first independent work. Ashdown House was built in 1794 and now houses a respected private school which borders Forest Row. These structures are very rare examples of his work in this country and his only two completed, independent architectural buildings are in this locality, constructed prior to his most famous works of architecture, across the pond. In 1793, Latrobe was hired to plan improvements to the River Blackwater from Maldon to Beeleigh, the project lasted until early 1795, when parliament denied approval of his plan. Latrobe had problems getting

LATROBE & HAMMERWOOD HOUSE CONTINUED
Latrobe also caught yellow fever three years afterwards, in the same place and he too died on September 3rd 1820. He is buried in New Orleans beside his son.
payment for his work on the project, and thus faced bankruptcy. In 1795 he suffered a breakdown and decided to emigrate to America in November of that year. As well as his architectural expertise, Latrobe was an accomplished watercolourist. Throughout his later travels in America he painted landscapes of the scenes he encountered. Before leaving England in 1795, he painted two scenes here. One is, I believe, of Hammerwood House and hangs in the headquarters of the Royal Institute of Architecture. The whereabouts of the other is unknown to me but it was offered to the museum some twenty years ago for £25,000, by an American art dealer. It is a view of Old Road in East Grinstead, showing a loaded cart being pulled towards the church which is without its tower. We have a copy in the museum. The book of his collected paintings in America contains the view of the retreating White Cliffs of Dover from the deck of the
“Eliza” as he passed them on his way west. Once in America, Latrobe was soon given many prestigious contracts. He designed the Capitol in Washington, the White House and the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore. The latter is considered to be his finest work. Apart from these high profile works he was concerned with many eng ineering projects throughout the land. In later years, he was assisted by his son, Henry. Sadly, Henry contracted yellow fever and died in New Orleans. Unbelievably,
The first owner of Hammerwood House was the magistrate Dorian Magen Magens. In the 1851 census he lived there with his family and even larger staff. When the Magens family left, it was turned into flats for a short time before the rock band Led Zeppelin bought it. When it was eventually bought by David Pinnegar in 1982, it was in a very dilapidated state. He and his family have spent the intervening years gradually restoring the house to its former glory. It is open to the public. Opening times can be found on the website. It is well worth a visit, both to admire the architecture and the immense effort that the Pinnegar family have expended on this huge restoration project.
