Baby Boom at The Llama Park
Last year in July we bought a male llama stud from an Emu farm, of all places, in Hereford. He was quite hairy and had a sort of ‘lions’ mane so we called him Leo.
He was quite small for a male llama and did not settle in very well and so we were quite disappointed as most of the ladies just ignored him and did not respond to his advances, or so we thought... .... until Sunday 19th July this year (a year to the day that we bought him) when late in the afternoon we discovered twin baby girl llamas, known as "crias", in a paddock with their mum Skye who is 9 years old. The birth of twins is exceptionally rare in 'camelids', 30,000 to 1 chance, so this was a major surprise to us and has made waves in the llama-world. One of the babies did not look well and so we got our lovely vet to have a look at her and some friends of ours who are local Alpaca breeders, Vicky and Chris Agar, provided us with some camelid plasma which was given to 'Spotty' and she has been doing very well ever since.
We called her sister 'Polo' and 'Spotty' has been renamed 'Beth' after one of our lovely livestock girls. Then to our great surprise on Tuesday 21st (just two days later) we had a third birth. The mother is 'Lulu' who is also 9 years old. This was another little girl 'cria' who we have named 'Farah' after a dear friend of ours. Well, we thought, that is amazing as we had not expected anything from Leo and had thought he was shooting blanks. But no, he was not! On Wednesday 22nd July Skye's daughter, Rain who is 3 years old, gave birth to a very strong and handsome little boy who has been named Willy after another of our livestock staff. By now Leo has become something of a famous stud so we determined to give him a

1 0 BABY BOOM AT THE LLAMA PARK CONTINUED name change to 'Casanova' see him in one of the photos after having been to the hairdresser on July 28th and now he looks like what he is, a real stud. Now we had four baby llamas which we had not expected and Casanova is now worth a fortune... However, the story does not end there as on Saturday 1st August another one of our lady llamas, Rhea, who is 12 years old and the biggest of the female llamas (so no pushover for a small stud like Casanova) gave birth to yet another very pretty female cria who has yet to be named but has very nice 'white socks'. So, we all asked, is Rhea the last of Casanova's lady friends to give birth? No! And so we had number "Six" as she is now called, while we think of a better
name. Six is beautiful and so lively and just like the youngest sister in a family running around making trouble and really enjoying herself. She races about and all the other babies follow her annoying the mothers. We still have four females who have not (as yet anyway) fallen to the charms of Casanova so who knows what might happen next. At the park we have a very big marquee with socially distanced tables. We are using this as our restaurant for now. All the food and drinks are served in disposable containers. Llama walks are now being carried out and the playground and bouncy castle are available for all the little ones. The shop is also open by appointment and we have a good range of gifts and toys.

MYSTERY
Anyone remember a very loud, very huge, mystery BANG that happened in East Grinstead in 1957? It made the papers and had Greenwich observatory wondering if it was a meteorite and locals wondering if it was a plane crash or bomb… well, after all these years, Martin Horsfall reveals the cause:
EXPLOSION Revealed
our house in Imberhorne Lane. So, under cover of darkness (I was only 2 so don't remember it) they let it off. It made a huge bang and all the front doors in the road simultaneously opened to see what on earth had happened. The two of them hid in a hedge for a couple of hours until it was safe to come out and were given a right suitable ticking off by their respective wives. The explosion was reported in the papers and gained much local attention…It’s been a wellkept family secret until now!’ Martin Horsfall
‘It was my grandad's doing. He had acquired some "ordnance" from his time in the Home Guard in Leeds, he said it was “blank" and just used for practice manoeuvres. Thinking it was time he got rid of it, he thought it would be a good wheeze to bring it down from Leeds in the back of his Jag and detonate it, with help from my dad, in the field opposite

Chicken & banana korma recipe This mild chicken curry is packed full of flavour and it’s healthier than a standard takeaway korma.
Ingredience • 2 tsp vegetable oil • 500g skinless, boneless uncooked chicken breasts, chopped • 1 large onion, chopped • 1 apple, cored and chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed • 2 tbsp korma curry paste • 400ml vegetable or chicken stock • 25g sultanas or raisins • 25g chopped ready-to-eat apricots • 300g easy-cook long grain brown rice • 1 tbsp cornflour • 1 banana, sliced • 4 tbsp plain yoghurt • 1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped (to garnish) • 1 pinch ground black pepper
Method Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan. Add the chicken, onion, apple and garlic, and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring often. Add the curry paste and cook for a few seconds, stirring. Add the stock, raisins or sultanas and apricots. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, for 35 minutes. Add a little more stock or water, if necessary. Brown rice takes 30-35 minutes to cook, so put it in plenty of simmering water. Just before serving, blend the cornflour with 2 tbsp cold water and add to the curry, stirring until thickened. Slice in the banana, cooking gently for another few moments. Check the seasoning, adding pepper, if needed. Serve, topping each portion with 1 tbsp yoghurt and accompanied with the rice. Garnish with coriander, if using.

Anne Boleyn
& Hever Castle
Hever Castle is thought to be the place where Henry and Anne fell in love. The now 125-acre grounds would not have existed during the pair’s courtship but the recreated Tudor knot and herb gardens allow visitors to experience a garden from that period.
One of the most famous historical figures in British history Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I, grew up at Hever Castle, not far from the Ashdown Forest. Then called Lancaster Great Park, the forest would have been known to the Boleyns as Henry VIII had a hunting lodge there. Hever is a double-moated castle and visitors are able to view Anne’s childhood bedroom and two prayer books owned and signed by her are also on display. The daughter of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Howard, Anne was educated in the Netherlands and
the French court before securing a job as a maid of honour to Catherine of Aragon. Although not considered the most beautiful lady at court, her refinement, education and quick-wit gained her many admirers, amongst them King Henry VIII.
Henry met Anne when he was still married to Catherine of Aragon and it was his love for Anne and her insistence that she not be his mistress that helped to lead Henry and the country to break away from Rome and expedite the Reformation. It is now believed that Anne Boleyn made the monumental decision to marry Henry VIII while she was at Hever Castle during the Christmas of 1526. Anne sent Henry a bejewelled ship as a New Year’s gift with a maiden at the helm, signifying to him that she was prepared to venture with him into the rough seas of the quest for an annulment from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Anne at Hever Castle thanking her for her ‘étrenne,’ which is a New Year’s gift. A couple of years later, before her marriage to Henry, she was sent into quarantine at Hever during the sweating sickness pandemic of 1528, where her and her father Thomas Boleyn became gravely ill with the disease. Henry was so concerned by the news that he sent his second-best doctor, Dr Butts, to attend the Boleyn family at Hever. Although Anne and her father survived, her brother-in-law William Carey died from the sweat. Henry wrote many letters to Anne at Hever during her illness and they survive today in the Vatican archives.

As Anne of Cleves outlived Henry and all his wives, she had some rather grand landlords who owned Hever Castle: King Henry VIII, King Edward VI, Queen Jane Grey and lastly Queen Mary I and King Philip of Spain. Anne of Cleves called Hever Castle home for seventeen years, leaving funds for the poor of Hever in her will. Tudor enthusiasts and fans of Anne Boleyn flock to Hever Castle to see where she grew up and walk in her footsteps.

Henry and Anne married in a secret ceremony on 14 November 1532. She soon became pregnant and had one daughter, Elizabeth who would go on to be one of the most famous monarchs in history. As most of us know, three years later Anne was investigated for high treason and executed. One of the prayer books on display at Hever Castle is thought to have been taken to the scaffold with her. Anne Boleyn wasn’t the only Queen Anne of Hever. Hever Castle became part of the Crown estate after the fall of the Boleyn family and Henry VIII purchased the property. He allowed his fourth Queen Anne of Cleves, who remained in Britain after their marriage was annulled (and

Hundreds of passengers have returned to the Bluebell Railway after it reopened and marked 60 years of operating as a heritage line. Last month the railway resumed running steam trains which coincided with its 60th birthday celebration. Part of the celebrations included e-greetings cards recorded by railway enthusiasts and transport organisations such as, TV presenter Sir Tony Robinson, TV presenter and Bluebell volunteer Nicholas Owen, toy manufacturer Hornby and the London Transport Museum. Bluebell Railway chairman Chris Hunford welcomed volunteers and visitors back to the Sheffield Park station. Founders who started running the steam trains again, all those years ago, were present.
In a ceremony to mark the reopening after a 20-week closure, Mr. Hunford said: “It was on this very spot 60 years ago – on 7th August 1960 – that the first passenger train left this station as the dream of railway enthusiasts to operate their own line came true. They were pioneers of the heritage railway movement, paving the way for groups across the country to open disused lines and run standard gauge preserved railways.” He added, “The Bluebell Railway has seen sixty years of progress – we’ve overcome obstacles, extended our track, reopened stations and been able to connect to the mainline at East Grinstead and developed into a major tourist attraction. This all came to a juddering halt in March, we had to close and look at our future and the uncertainty around it. But
thanks to the generosity of our members, volunteers, friends, supporters and the wider community, we were able to run a successful emergency appeal allowing us to generate the revenue needed to reopen in a safe and controlled manner.”

the honour of waving the green flag to see off the first train as the line reopened. Six-year-old Alex Venton was a special guest and blew the whistle as trains began running again on the 60th anniversary re-opening day. Alex has been keen on trains since the age of two and is a member of the Bluebell Railway’s club for juniors. Many locals will know that the Bluebell, which is not-for-profit, launched an emergency appeal in March to provide enough money to recover from the closure and retain key heritage skills in the area. Alex read about the appeal in the railway’s newsletter and decided to give all his saved-up money (he wanted to buy a new coach for his collection) to the appeal instead. Trevor Swainson, the funding organiser, said: “We were touched that Alex had emptied his money box because of his concern the railway was struggling. We have had more than 2500 donations to the appeal but it is stories like Alex’s that are particularly heart-warming and it makes us realise just how special the Bluebell is to so many people.” The appeal has raised nearly £400,000 so far which was enough to allow it to reopen but it is still asking for donations because of continued uncertainty.
Elton John fans chance to recreate album cover It’s been a long time coming, but now you can tell everybody there is the chance to follow in the footsteps of Sir Elton John and be pictured in the same spot as one of his album covers.

Elton John fans chance to recreate album cover It’s been many years since the singer visited the Bluebell for the cover of his 1970 album Tumbleweed Connection, when he and Bernie Taupin were photographed by Ian Digby Ovens, with the Victorian station used to inspire the album’s rural Americana concept. Museum curator Tony Drake said: “Late

one afternoon I was locking up the museum when a young couple came along and declared, ‘It must be here’. I inquired as to what was ‘here’ and they told me the story of Elton John and the cover for his album Tumbleweed Connection. “They proceeded to take photos with the gentleman sat in the exact spot Elton sat. It’s exactly 50 years since the album was released and we are celebrating 60 years, so we thought it would be a good idea to encourage Elton’s fans to come and take their picture at the scene.” The museum team painstakingly reset the enamel signs that were outside the building in 1970 in the exact positions and cleaned them ready for the photo opportunity. These include signs for Sunlight soap, Rowntree’s chocolates, Mazawattee tea, Shelvey’s mineral waters and Rajah cigars. The Nestle’s milk chocolate bar dispensing machine had also been relocated to another station but it was “still standing” (oh yes!). It was carefully repainted and placed in its original position by volunteers. Visitors have now started recreating the album cover and the Bluebell is encouraging them to share their images on social media.
New this Autumn: SteamLights This festive steam train light show will be the first of its kind in the South East. Visitors will be treated to an amazing display along the way, with festive scenes among the clearings and a colourful light show orchestrated in time with music and narration. Steamlights will be a unique addition to any family’s calendar this Christmas: a steam train experience not to be missed. Tickets are sold per compartment to allow for social distancing measures. First class compartments seat up to six adults and third class up to eight adults. Passengers can also order Christmas hampers full of seasonal treats to enjoy during the journey. The Bluebell Railway has adapted its services and is running trains with separate compartments as well as special dining trains with prepared food. All tickets have to be pre-booked online. Further details at www.bluebell-railway.com. The emergency funding appeal is at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/supportbluebell The Bluebell Railway will put on a major celebration for the 60-year anniversary in 2021.
Tumbleweed Connection was Elton John’s third studio album and it reached No. 2 in the UK album charts. Sir Elton is one of many singers who have visited or used the Bluebell’s period stations for promotional filming. Others include Cilla Black, Ringo Starr, Sheena Easton and the Pet Shop Boys.

News from the local Wildlife A&E A few weeks ago, we had a lovely little girl hedgehog brought to us who’d been found walking round in circles. After checking ears and eyes she was found to be completely blind. We were so upset because finding her a home was going to be difficult and seeing her walking round in circles in the hospital was awful. But then I had a lovely couple of ladies bring me a nest of pigeons found in a building which was being demolished. Whilst chatting they made a comment about their tortoise garden which was totally enclosed. A lightbulb moment! I asked them if they would like a hedgehog too. To my delight they said they would try it and see how she does. Well once she found her way around, she has settled in really well and made friends with the tortoises and is very happy. She can now be found wandering around collecting grass to line her bedroom and is such a happy hog. Wildlife A&E is a non-profit organisation who help injured/orphaned wildlife back to the wild.
