This month we’re very pleased to be able to bring you an interview with world renowned wildlife artist, David Shepherd CBE, who resides on the border of Ashdown Forest in Hammerwood. This gives you an insight into what prompted him to start on his path as a wildlife artist. He also talks about his happiest commission, painting the portrait of the Queen Mother and more besides. The second part of the interview will be featured in the next issue. An article by Lord Buckhurst about the Racquets Court at Buckhurst Park, Withyham, is interspersed with some intriguing Sackville family history who, of course, once owned a good deal of the lands hereabouts. David Shepherd
David Shepherd, CBE, lives in Hammerwood, near Ashdown Forest. He’s known internationally as one of the world’s leading wildlife artists.
Throughout his career he has therefore tried to do all he can to repay the enormous debt he feels he owes wildlife. In 1984 he established the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation to channel his own conservation efforts that continue to make a real difference to wildlife. David is perhaps lesser known for his portraits, which include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. His life as an artist and conservationist has featured in many TV programmes, including the BBC’s ‘This is Your Life’ (1990).

David celebrates his 80th birthday in April and will be marking the occasion with a fundraising dinner at the Natural History Museum hosted by Michael Parkinson on 6th May 2011. Tally (Editor) had the good fortune to interview him at his home. The first question I had was why he choose to live in this area. He admits that some people have asked him why he would choose to live near East Grinstead with it’s permanent traffic gridlock? (the bottle necks evidently leave a lasting impression). Augmenting this, on the A22 there’s not much else to see but a Homebase, Macdonalds, etc.… “The top part of the High Street is beautiful.. I’ve got the impression that in recent months the town is trying to make itself even more attractive… And people are so friendly around here,” He told me.
Peace & tranquility at home are a very important part of David’s life and essentially why he settled in this neck of the woods. Having lived in Hascombe, Surrey, in a country house, they had realised it was time to move on. David explained, “same old thing, (the house) was originally built 500 years ago, on a track that then became a road, that then became a highway. The articulated trucks discovered it as a short cut… They would come belting down the road, hitting the trees… if you were out in the garden you could hardly hear yourself speak because of the noise”. A circle was drawn around the Surrey base of his conservation charity and Hammerwood was funnily enough right on the line.

“You can stand out in the garden and not hear a sound except birds singing… it’s unique to be so near to London and yet not be able to hear anything except birdsong”. Indeed, while waiting in his lounge it was so serenely quiet that the sound of my mobile was almost a momentary shock - extremely rare in this day & age! His current residence dates back to 1490 and he admitted he couldn’t live in anything modern. “The older I get, the more I love living in the past for a hundred reasons.” He admitted he’s a grumpy old man, “there’s just so much to grump about… The Health & Safety act, children growing up now can’t do anything because of the danger angle… you can’t play in the woods, you can’t fool about… all our daughters broke arms (as children); it’s all part of growing up... (it’s) all being dissipated now.”

sure doesn’t happen often”. She told David how she never had time to chat to anyone, as she’s always shaking hands. “She so enjoyed speaking about Africa, we talked about all the memories. I got away with outrageous things, used to turn up dressed like this (points to trousers complete with dabs upon dabs of dried oil colour) … she said something like: ‘modern art’”. We go on to talk about the RAF’s “Bomber Command Memorial” recently featured with a double page spread in the Daily Express, a cause close to his heart. “50 years overdue is shameful. Only now, when they’re nearly all passed away… Acres of stuff about the Battle of Britain, but the RAF’s Bomber Command never gets a mention...55 thousand plus young guys didn’t come back…We have planning permission just need to raise a bit more”. David’s asked to support so many charities, and it’s impossible to get involved with all of them, but because of his debt of gratitude to the RAF he jumped at the chance with the memorial fund. “I owe so much of my success to the RAF. I’ve flown with them all over the world for 40 years. They commissioned my first wildlife painting in 1960 which changed my life… They flew me to Kenya as their guest and asked for an original painting for the officers mess but said, ‘we don’t want bloody airplanes as we fly them all day’…”.

A topical subject these days (with the recently released and much-accoladed film, The Kings Speech), my ears especially perked up when he mentioned the late Queen Mother: “A few weeks after that I was commissioned to paint the Queen Mother’s portrait at Clarence House... She asked, ‘how do you manage to paint the Ark Royal one minute and my portrait the next?’ which was her favourite ship by coincidence, ‘there’s no difference ma’am,’ I answered… realising what terrible trouble I was about to get into... she just laughed. She was lovely. I think painting the Queen Mother has to be one of my happiest commissions. I had 6 one hour sessions... She offered another session as she’d so enjoyed talking, which I’m

He admitted that only 2 people have truly stopped him in his tracks one was Queen Mother, the other Neil Armstrong. Vegetables
If the weather is suitable sow beetroot, broad beans, carrots, leeks, lettuce and other salad leaves. Also onions, parsnips, peas, radish, spinach, summer cabbage and cauliflowers. Ensure the ground is friable. Follow instructions on the packet for sowing depths. Plant onion sets, shallots and garlic. At the end of the month plant early chitted potatoes and put maincrop potatoes in trays or boxes to chit. Regularly hoe vegetable beds so weeds are not taking available moisture or nutrients.
Fruit Garden
For an early crop of strawberries bring potted plants into the greenhouse. Water well and feed. If your rhubarb is pushing through, cover it with an upturned bucket to exclude light. This will encourage the plant to produce tender pink shoots. Mulch fruit with your own compost or well-rotted farm manure but ensure it does not touch the stems of each plant as this can cause them to rot.
Roses
Continue pruning large-flowered and cluster-flowered roses. Then give them a feed. Shrub roses should not be pruned in the spring, as you won’t get flowers. However, you can feed and mulch shrub roses now. This is the best month for planting new roses. Never plant a new rose in soil that has grown a rose previously. The new one will suffer from rose transplant sickness. If you must have a rose in a particular place you should change the soil at least 1 metre all around the planting hole and 1 metre deep.
Lawns
Check your mower is in good working order. Raise the mowing height for the first cut of the season. New lawns can be made using turf but it is best to wait until late in the month or even into April before sowing grass seed. Towards the end of the month feed the lawn with high nitrogen fertilizer. Continue aerating your lawn and rake to get out debris, dead grass and moss. If moss is a problem use Sulphate of Iron.
Bulbs
Plant summer flowering bulbs in well prepared soil. If you have wet soil place a layer of grit in the bottom of the planting hole.
Greenhouse Sow seeds for summer bedding in your greenhouse or on a warm, bright windowsill in the house or conservatory. You can start begonia tubers and canna roots. Begonia is best started by laying the tubers in a tray of moist compost. Once the shoots show, pot them individually. March 2011 • Ashdown Forest Living

Now she has been accepted by Kabul University to study for a degree in fine art. What a transformation! In Jordan we help nomadic Bedouin to immunise their herds of camels, goats and sheep, raising their health-awareness and income with increased numbers of fatter animals.

We were sad. The Iranian revolution was close at hand, our boys needed Secondary schooling and our eldest son was dissatisfied with his boarding school. If we returned to the UK after many years living and working in the Middle East, what were we to do? A dear sea-captain friend challenged to make the world revolve around where we live rather than always thinking of going overseas to help the poor. So our lives changed and radically improved. Basing ourselves in the UK, sharing our vision, experiences and opportunities with others, much more has been accomplished than had we stayed in Iran. Crowborough based charity, World in Need, started when a Kurdish refugee came to the UK having been poisoned by Saddam Hussain. Near to death, the medical profession enabled him not only to survive but to grow strong enough to return to Iraq and join the government after the fall of his old enemy. It was he who appealed to us to help his people and so World In Need was born in 1991. manage their own projects. Friends both within Kurdistan and abroad, visit local people, teaching and sharing skills, and then return home, leaving them to apply their new knowledge into local culture, and to be accountable for any donated funds and goals set to improve their daily life. The Kurds have always been an afflicted people and have a saying “The Kurd has no friend” We hope to have proved that this is not true as we are still involved with them to this day. We find sponsors for their children so that they can pay school fees and receive an eduaction. We also provide funds for microfinance projects, such as a widow’s violin workshop and medical programmes. After the Taliban fell in Afghanistan, we have been able to work with Afghans in Kabul, helping them set up a Day-care Centre for very poor, illiterate children who have lost a parent. Because of this loss these children have no hope of an education or even food for life. We make efforts to keep them out of institutions, which are commonly rat-infested and lack personal care. Ranya one of our children in the Centre, not only loved to paint
In Kenya we have established a Primary school attached to a Training Centre. This is partlyfunded by a corn field which generates income. We plan to install PhotoVoltaic solar-panels into the school roof so that evening classes can be held to teach adults to read. In India we have built a hostel for untouchable caste children. They are now climbing to the top of their classes because they receive individual care and attention. All 20 countries in which we work are supported by local people in and around Crowborough, in the Ashdown Forest area. People give their time to administration, finance, fundraising and many other vital support roles. In this field there is no retirement age and so “retired” workers are considered to be in their prime, particularly in the countries we support. In these cultures overseas, the elder generation are held in high regard and consequently feel safe and experience few discipline problems. The Rackets Court at Buckhurst Park
W
e are honoured to be able to publish this article written by Lord Buckhurst, the Sackville family heir. It covers the history of the Rackets Court at Buckhurst Park (Withyham) their family estate. The text is interspersed with fascinating snippets of family history. The Sackville Family’s ancestors, of course, once owned most of the lands in the area and no place is this presence more evident than East Grinstead for which many namesakes have been given – Sackville College, Lane, School etc; Buckhurst Way; The Dorset Arms (after Dorset, a Sackville Dukedom), Cantelupe Rd; De La Warr Rd., etc. The Rackets Court at Buckhurst Park enjoys the distinction of being the last remaining privately owned Rackets Court in England. It remains interesting for its richly coloured red floor - thought to have been stained with bull’s blood! It is one of very few mid 19th century courts to have survived, and possibly one of the earliest enclosed courts in the country. It has been privately owned by the same family for over 150 years. Built in 1857 by doting parents to commemorate the safe return of their eldest surviving son and heir from the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-1855, Crimean War), it reveals a fascinating history and insight into the Sackville family and the 19th century game of rackets. The Court was built for MajorGeneral Charles Richard Sackville-West, who later became the 6th Earl De La Warr. Charles had been educated at Harrow School in March 2011 • Ashdown Forest Living
the 1820s, during the time that Harrow became the first public school to take up the game of rackets, and so had presumably developed a passion for the game there. Up until Charles’s arrival at Harrow there had been no particular tradition of rackets sports in the Sackville family. Indeed, if they can claim a contribution to the ranks of British sporting history then it is through his predecessors, the 2nd and 3rd Dukes of Dorset, who were notable for their patronage of early English cricket: Charles Sackville, 2nd Duke of Dorset, and his younger brother, Lord John Sackville, were at the first cricket match played at the famous Vine Cricket Ground in Sevenoaks, where for the first time cricket was played with three stumps rather than two. John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset, was a founder member of the Marleybone Cricket Club (MCC) and when, during his ambassadorship in France, he invited a team of English cricketers to lead a tour in 1789, they were met at Dover by the
Duke himself coming the other way - he was fleeing for his life from the French Revolution. So the intended first-ever overseas cricket tour became instead the first tour to be cancelled for political reasons! The 3rd Duke’s only son died childless aged 21 in a hunting accident in Ireland in 1815. The Dukedom of Dorset passed to a distant cousin and subsequently died out, but the extensive Sackville lands and estates passed to the 3rd Duke’s last surviving daughter, Lady Elizabeth Sackville, who by then was married to the 5th Earl De La Warr, whose ancestor had given his name to the US State of Delaware. A run of bad luck followed in the family as Lord and Lady De La Warr’s eldest son and heir, George John Frederick, Viscount Cantelupe, also died young and childless in 1850. When, therefore, their second son and new heir, Charles, left to fight in the Crimea, the relief that his parents felt at his safe return resulted in the commission of an

The Visitors Book with the Rules and Regulations of the Rackets Court Buckhurst Park
impressive new Rackets Court in a perfect location, metres from the main house and the formal gardens. A brass plate in the gallery commemorates the return from Sevastopol of Colonel Lord West; interestingly Charles didn’t take his late brother’s title of Viscount Cantelupe (presumably thinking it to be unlucky) but instead styled himself as Lord West, referring back to an ancient De La Warr barony which had long since ceased to exist. Luck was not to follow him, however, as the rackets player, Charles, who never married, ended up drowning himself in the River Cam in 1863. Unusually then, it was Lord and Lady De La Warr’s third son, Reginald, who succeeded as 7th Earl in 1863. There is little record of Reginald - who until his succession to the Earldom had been a vicar - ever having played rackets in the Court. There are, however, well preserved records of the Court being put to other uses. Firstly in December 1863, when the new 7th Earl and his Countess arrived at Buckhurst, the Tunbridge Wells Courier describe lavish celebrations held in the Court with “300 sat down to a bountiful repast of roast beef and plum pudding” and a few days later, “a Christmas Tree, lit up and of gigantic proportions with 577 children of March 2011 • Ashdown Forest Living
estate staff and tenants filing past”. Later, in 1889, at the coming of age party of Lord and Lady De La Warr’s eldest son, Lionel Charles Cranfield - who this time did style himself Viscount Cantelupe - a week of celebrations was held at Buckhurst with the Rackets Court used again to stage a presentation ceremony from the estate tenants to Lord Cantelupe and then, later in the week, for all the birthday presents to be laid out on tables for visitors to file past and view. With a young family living at Buckhurst once again, it is likely that the Court was played on frequently; it is unfortunate that, although there is still a copy of the visitors book in the Court at Buckhurst, players stopped entering their names in the 1870s. We do know, however, from Lord Aberdare’s book on the game that at around the turn of the century Joseph Bickley - a well-known builder of Tennis, Rackets and Fives Courts - re-faced the walls, and they remain in good condition today. The run of bad luck continued in the family. Shortly after his coming of age celebrations and subsequent marriage, the young Viscount Cantelupe drowned in his yacht during a storm off Belfast. His younger brother, Gilbert, eventually became the 8th Earl but died at sea in 1915 on his way back from fighting at Gallipoli. The Cantelupe title has not been used by an eldest son since.
During the Second World War Buckhurst was requisitioned by the Canadian Army who used the Court to store tanks; in order to get them in and out they carved a large hole in one of the side walls, which was subsequently repaired. The last time that the court was played on was during my grandparents’ time in the 1960s when Clarence “Clarry” Pell (a close friend of my grandparents) played against Cosmo Crawley. My own more recent memory of its use was restricted to games of indoor ‘stump’ with my younger brother! Since then, the Court has fallen into a state of disuse with much of the original wooden staircase and viewing gallery rotted and no glass left in the roof. The court lights are no longer in place. However, the exterior walls are still in very good condition and the inside walls and floor, rather remarkably, remain in a very ‘playable’ state. We are currently exploring ways of raising sufficient funds to restore the Court to its former glory in the hope that we could once again see rackets played at Buckhurst. Lord Buckhurst
Following the untimely death of the 8th Earl, Buckhurst was leased to a rich banking family called the Bensons (the family bank later became Kleinwort Benson). COLOURS Kitchens are definitely becoming a much more colourful affair. Often we are designing kitchens now that are either painted using colours like Duck Egg Blue or Sage along with the more
traditional cream and ivory. All of these colours work well with the contrast of wood and can be used together in a scheme using Oak as the work surface or in the flooring. For a more modern look
the gloss finishes are still very in vogue and stronger colours are being used for a very dramatic finish, Aubergine, Grey and even Lime Green can create a stunning wow factor kitchen.

HARTFIELD COMMUNITY PLAY
Public Meeting
St Mary`s School Hartfield on March 8th at 7.30pm A Claque Theatre led Community Play production is planned for Hartfield in spring 2012. The public meeting explains how the process works and identifies possible storylines about the village and surrounding areas with time for questions. Anyone wishing to take on a role in organising or participating in this exciting venture is most welcome, we have around 80 volunteers and there are many roles to fill. Could you construct props, manage the stage or front of house, help with fundraising, research, make costumes with guidance from professional designers? Skills such as bookkeeping, management, publicity, graphics, computer skills are also required. Volunteering is as flexible as you wish and no training is required although help is available. Leading up to the play there will be research and drama workshops, perhaps mask making and mime, puppet construction and storytelling. It is hoped that a Children`s Literary Festival will be part of the project ending with a contemporary book of experiences gained during the play procedure.

Forest Row Film Society Going from strength to strength
Back in the 1990s audiences had dwindled and the forest row film society often didn’t cover costs. Part of the challenge was that they were still running 16mm film, and couldn’t get a great selection of prints, so it was only once they went digital a few years ago that the opportunities for more variety emerged. During 2007 a fundraising campaign was started for a digital projector, earning their first £1000 and a Heart of the Community award from the Courier newspaper group. By summer 2008 having received nearly £12,000 in grants the projector, a new large screen, and a surround sound system were bought. In the process, marketing and publicity were transformed resulting in a strong audience who keep coming back, and who trust their programming choices. The Society has changed from being a bit moribund to being a vibrant part of the community. In fact, The term “community cinema” is the one

Now, The first ever Forest Row Comedy Film Festival will be taking place 17-20 March 2011.
