ALLZONES BUILDING & ROOFING
Testimonial: “Allzones have now skillfully performed 3 build contracts for me over the last few years; covering a range of activities from roofing/hanging tiles/guttering to outdoor landscaping, log cabin erection, building a bridge and interior refurbishment including flooring. They are certainly very experienced, know what they’re doing, are excellent trouble shooters and won’t cut corners. Not only that: they are clean, tidy, polite and reasonably priced. They respect your home, have good attention to detail and provide a good standard of finish. I have no hesitation in recommending them and will be inviting them back next year to do the final stage of my restoration work.” Dr. C. A. Scott Forest Row

Pumpkin Pie
It’s that wonderful time of year, as the evenings start to draw in, the air becomes crisper and the smell of bonfires catch us thinking about autumn. It’s time to celebrate the great harvests around us – we are surrounded by fantastic farms, all of whom grow amazing vegetables and fruits, and now is the time of the squash and pumpkin. This is a simple, but amazing tasting pie to set off a great roast dinner.
Method
Ingredients »
1 Pumpkin or butternut squash (at least 1lb of flesh)
Shortcrust pastry: » » »
250g flour 125 butter 25g fine caster sugar
Filling: » » » » » »
3 eggs 100g muscovado sugar 2 tablespoons plain flour ½ tsp of grated nutmeg ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground cinnamon
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C or 350 farenheit. Peel, de-seed and cut up the pumpkin and/or butternut squash and weigh out 1lb of the flesh. If you prefer you can roast the flesh as this caramalises the sugars and adds extra flavour to the pie. Pop it in for 20 – 30 minutes, take out and puree in blender. Sweet shortcrust pastry:You can buy it or quickly put it together with half fat to flour i.e. 250g flour, 125g butter, 25g fine caster sugar and 9 tablespoons of water. Put flour and butter in bowl and mix with your hands until it is like breadcrumbs, add the sugar and slowly add the water until it is the right consistency, roll it into a ball and cover with clingfilm and put it in the fridge – you will need approx 400 - 450g of chilled pastry The filling:Mix 3 eggs, 100g muscovado sugar, 2 tablespoons of plain flour, half teaspoon of grated nutmeg, ground ginger and ground cinnamon. Put the puree into the bowl and gently mix together and then slowly add the milk. Put aside. Roll the pastry out large enough to fill a greased 23cm x 2.5cm dish. Gently lower the pastry into the dish, making sure it covers it well, then cut around the dish with a knife or pinch together with your fingers to give the pie a good finish. Pour in the into the pie, brush the pastry with some milk, this will give it a lovely brown colour. Pop it into the preheated oven 190 degrees C (375 farenheit) for 40-45 minutes, check half way through, if necessary put foil around the pastry edges (very hot use oven gloves). You are looking for the filling to set. Fabulous with cream and a dusting of icing sugar. Enjoy Kate & Rick Stuff2Eat Cookery School 07932 707138 / www.stuff2eat.co.uk

Starting a charity at home
A couple from Hadlow Down, a small village which borders the Ashdown Forest, have been so moved by the plight of Romanians shunned by society that they decided to take the initiative and start their own charity. Stephen & Rebekka Maughan have already funded a new playround for Romanian Orphans. Please support their far-reaching yet home-grown charity as you can, to help those far less fortunate than ourselves. Here is the background story: Two years ago my wife volunteered for a charity based in Oradea, Romania to work with abandoned and neglected children at the local hospital, and also in a Roma village. She came back, transformed and heartbroken from what she saw. Last year, our two young children (aged 3 and 1) joined her on a trip to Brasov, doing similar work for another charity. As a journalist, I had written a number of articles about childcare and corruption in Romania, but once you meet a under-nourished and uneducated Roma child living in a tiny shack with no roof, or a baby left at a under-staffed October 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living
hospital it changes your life. I remember walking in the Ashdown forest one morning, and despite the beauty of the forest I couldn’t get the images of abandoned children I had seen out of my head. Like many I had assumed the problems of Romania had ended once and for all when it joined the EU back in 2007. At the time one of the conditions of joining was that Romania would close all it’s notorious large state orphanages. Yet, behind the scenes children continue to suffer. The Romanian Head of Social Inspection recently stated that 92.5% of the children in state care don’t have any toys, and 65% have no toiletry and hygiene supplies. A joint UNICEF and World Bank study last year suggested that Romania’s state services “are either insufficient or lacking the necessary quality to effectively protect the most in need children.” Starting our own charity, Open Hands, seemed the natural response to all this. With local support we raised funds to build a playground this year for a children’s home (run by Fara charity). We visited the home last month, and it
was moving to see the children enjoying their new playground, and how easy it can be to make a difference to their lives. We support a group of orphan girls in their mid twenties, all from the Ceausescu era who have suffered unimaginable abuse. Mentally scared, and in desperate need of care and love, these girls live together in a little flat with 24 hour care. We also work with impoverished Roma people and have just arranged a sight-saving eye operation for a young Roma boy. Open Hands latest project is to work again with Fara to start a daycare centre for children with autism in Suceava, Northern Romania. A charity jumble sale and fairtrade tea room will take place on Saturday 6h November from 10am-12:30 at ChristChurch Centre in Crowborough. Please call 01825 831851 or e-mail office@openhandscharity. org for more details. Quality donations very welcome. Please visit www.openhandscharity.org to find out more

Saving our Honeybees
In recent years there have been worrying colony losses worldwide and the health of the honeybees has been compromised due to a variety of different factors, environmental and otherwise. We asked the Natural Beekeeping Trust based at Plawhatch Farm, which borders the Ashdown Forest, to provide more information: The Natural Beekeeping Trust (Patron Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate).
The Trust’s aim is to promote awareness of ways of beekeeping which take as their starting point the nature and needs of the bees, rather than maximising honey yields. Home to the Natural Beekeeping Trust, Plaw Hatch Farm is a co-operative biodynamic farm near Sharpthorne, on the edge of the Ashdown Forest. The keeping of bees on farms makes good common sense, and Plaw Hatch has long upheld this tradition. We hear in the USA of colonies being shipped from one end of the country to the other in their thousands. We have also seen the heart rending photographs of trucks overturned and the air thick with clouds of disorientated and distressed bees, many of which have to be destroyed… Certainly on a mixed farm with varied forage and an absence of pesticides the honey bee can thrive, crops can be October 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living
pollinated, and as long as there is a surplus, we can share in the bounty of delicious honey and pure beeswax. In this context the word ‘surplus’ is all important. There is no true honey surplus if we have taken the bees’ winter stores and replaced them with sugar. The fact that bees can, and have, survived on sugar feeding is no reason to suppose that it does them no harm in the long term. If we also consider the myriad manipulations which are regularly visited on bees by many beekeepers, a picture of something akin to factory farming arises. One unfortunate result of such practices has been the devaluation of honey into a sort of cheap flavoured sugar paste, rather than the precious life sustaining substance it should be. The biodynamic method of beekeeping differs markedly from that of conventional and commercial beekeeping. Some of the principles are given below: • The bees build natural honeycomb without the use prefabricated wax. • The body of the hive is constructed of natural material. • The queen is not confined to the brood box by a mesh panel, but is allowed to roam throughout the hive. Her wings are not clipped and neither is she replaced systematically by the beekeeper. Thus, the unique relationship between
the queen, the workers and the drones is honoured. • Enough stores of the bees’ own honey and pollen are left in the hive for their use, and only in an absolute emergency is any sugar fed. • The bees use their own pollen and are not stimulated into early colony growth by artificial pollen feeds, which, curiously, are usually made of soya and yeast • The beekeeper takes all possible steps to maintain the vitality of the colony, using only biodynamically approved control measures against disease, and guarding against causing unnecessary stress. The Natural Beekeeping Trust is devoted to the well being of the honey bee, and supporting methods of husbandry which are bee friendly and sustainable. We feel that this is the only way to ensure the recovery and long term health of the honey bee. The Trust also gives beekeeping courses and talks as well as representing natural beekeeping at various events (see website). To become a friend of the Natural Beekeeping Trust go to www. naturalbeekeepingtrust.org. On Friday 8th October 2010 there will be a talk organ sed by the Trust entitled ‘A Better World for Bees – what can we do?’ 8pm at the Village Hall, Forest Row. Beekeepers and non beekeepers are welcome. Article by Penny Crowder

What is MathJogs? MathJogs, taught in small groups of four to eight children, is a programme of fun, creative maths lessons for ages 4 to 11. It is designed by educational experts to help your child think like a mathematician through enjoyable activities and group interaction. MathJogs is part of the MathRiders programme. MathRiders, for ages 11 to 18, should be available later in the year.
The Method In the UK MathJogs is new, however it is one of the methodologies created by the Helen Doron Educational Group that is a trusted household name in over 30 countries. HDEG has been established for 25 years and has taught over one million children worldwide.
How MathJogs differs from other forms of maths tutoring MathJogs lessons are fun and interactive. Each well planned lesson lasts 50 to 60 minutes and uses several elements to make the lesson fun, creative and enjoyable. It’s A Cat’s Life at Cats Protection By Krystyna O’Brien
The National Cats Protection Centre (NCAC) in Chelwood Gate is much more than just a cats’ home. Tania Marsh, Deputy Manager, gave me a tour.
about 120 cats enter the home each month and the same number re-homed, with a cat’s average length of stay in the Centre being 3-4 months.
I was immediately surprised by the size, cleanliness and modernity of the Centre, which is tucked away just off the A275 Lewes Road.
All cats get fed two or three times a day, and the kittens up to four times a day. Some kittens have to be hand-reared (these on occasion are taken home by staff who feed them every two hours, including through the night).
The reception is bright, spacious and welcoming, and includes a children’s play area. Its atmosphere is loving and caring. Those cats that need re-homing the most, are allowed to wander free in reception meeting and greeting the visitors. As Tania said, this gets them re-homed faster. Cats Protection is a charity and receives no government funding. Instead it relies on regular donations, bequeathments and events to bring in much-needed funds. It has an on-site vet, who works Monday – Friday, and two full-time veterinary nurses. Tania actively encourages all owners to get their pets micro-chipped. One such cat had been missing for three years. Its owners were both shocked and thrilled when they received the phone call from the NCAC saying that their cat had turned up. About 300 cats are on site at any one time. On average October 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living
All cats over 4 months old are neutered before leaving the centre. Once a cat has been chosen, the new owners have a home visit, whereby risks are assessed and the suitability of the environment is ascertained. If all goes well at this stage, the cat can be re-homed. There are around 250 branches of Cats Protection around the country and most of these are volunteerled. Chelwood Gate is lucky in that it has a full-time staff and many dedicated volunteers, who cuddle the cats and do home visits. Cats Protection is only able to survive because of its volunteers. For more information, make a donation or to become a volunteer, contact NCAC on 01825 741330 or visit their website at www.ncac. cats.org.uk info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

Memories of Nutley…

The Rev’d Canon S I Pulford as a young boy with his family.
With the 70 year anniversary of the declaration of war recently passing the Rev’d Canon S. I. Pulford recounts: Memories of Nutley: The Day War Broke Out I was sitting in church with my sister Lois and our mother. I can’t remember the first hymn, but if it was a sunny September morning it could have been “When morning gilds the skies” (one of my father’s favourites!). As it was 300 yards from Nutley Vicarage to the church we would have had to hurry a bit as the five-minute bell was ringing. There was a tense feeling in the air, as there were evidence all around of “being prepared” for what not of. Negotiations, rumours, announcements…. Father had his ear glued to the wireless to hear the latest news. Lots of khaki clad soldiers added to a heightening of unease. So it seemed very unusual when the church door opened and Mr Ryall the headmaster hurried up the aisle to speak to my father who then made the announcement which we had all been anticipating, that War had been declared. For us children, I was fourteen years old and in the middle of my schooling, it brought a sense of excitement, but our parents remembered all too clearly all they had gone through only twenty years before as they had both been very involved in the traumas of the Great War (World War I).

Of course, school came to a sudden halt. Panic and evacuation changed everyone’s lives. Harrow High School was moved out of London and filled what had been a hotel in Nether Lane, Nutley. I was found a place there, but it was short lived as the powers that decided that the furtherance of my education was not conducive to National Security. At much the same time, (it was all of seventy years ago!) my father felt it wiser to accept a living in the far west of Cornwall, which was the saddest part of my whole life, saying farewell to that lovely old Vicarage, dear Nutley, where in the attic I had my first and only electric train set up – “0” gauge Horby GWR….
