Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

The Working Horse Trust:

Protecting the TRADITIONAL DRAUGHT HORSE

The Trust is devoted to safeguarding the future of our Heavy Working Horse breeds for progeny. In establishing a working farm and undertaking a wide range of conservation activities, the Trust aims to demonstrate just how valuable these horses can still be in a rural economy and show how they can make a positive contribution to the good husbandry of our environment. With twenty odd years of charitable support for the dwindling numbers of draught horses in this country, there is now only three months left for the Trust to find a new home. The hunt for new premises began last October when it was announced that the Nevill Estate at Eridge was no longer to be the Trust’s home. Somewhere suitable is yet to be found for its fifteen horses – most of them having been born and bred at the Estate. “Despite some very kind offers, we haven’t found anywhere in our immediate vicinity that could house all of our horses, vehicles and equipment”, said Trustee Jo Ambrose, “We are now having to look further afield but our biggest challenge is to find somewhere that is still readily accessible to our

• July 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

established volunteer team, whilst at the same time providing the land and buildings that we need to carry on operating efficiently. It is proving much harder than we imagined, September 30th is coming round far too quickly, so it is a very anxious time for us. “To see so many years of hard work and dedication, by what must amount to well over 100 volunteers, come to an end doesn’t bear thinking about. Nor does breaking up our ‘family’ of horses who have been together nearly all of their lives. We would settle for emergency short-term accommodation at this point, we might even have to ask friends and colleagues if they could house a horse or two while we try to find a more permanent solution. We are determined to keep going, but we do desperately need a lucky break which we’re very much hoping is round the corner.” If anyone can help the Trust in any way could they please contact: Jo Ambrose on 01892 750105 or email enquiries@theworkinghorsetrust.org

Stone Ness Walled Garden th Open Day July 13

However, your route surely should first take you down the path to the lower garden past Nessy the lady scarecrow. Make your way along each of the terrace beds in turn: Rhubarb, Comfrey, and Asparagus at the bottom, sweet corn, cucumbers, courgettes and squashes – then the carrots and parsnips – and above that a wide bed of potatoes, tomatoes, and a few strawberry plants which the squirrels haven’t found. Above that, onions and garlic – then beans of all sorts that we didn’t put on the slope – and at the top, some early French beans (we like growing beans!) which are to be followed shortly by cauliflowers. Stone Ness Walled Garden offers social and therapeutic horticulture to local people with learning difficulties and mental health issues. It will be a warm sunny day... (!) and we welcome those of you who are interested in what we do here. As you enter to your left see the orchard with its pears, apples, damsons and the fig. Pinch and savour the fragrance of the rosemary hedge as you wander down the path. To your right, the 4 sloping beds: young Christmas trees in the first – then netted rows of calabrese, cabbages, sprouts and broccoli. Next, the lines of pea sticks (the mice may have had the peas, but you get the idea) – and two giant wigwams of runner beans, grown carefully from seed which we harvested and saved last year. The final sloping bed is a triumph – the strawberry patch – now securely caged against all pests except ourselves. We may still have a few strawberries left by the 13th or we could take orders for jam.

Now make your way up to the potting shed and ask Phil for a hot dog. I’m sure there will be a cup of tea in the pot and home made cakes - if you are quick enough! And next? Well, maybe just sit a while, enjoy the garden, and chat with some of our regular visitors, gardeners and volunteers or take maybe take a walk down to see the wild garden, the pond, and maybe the ponies... We do hope you can come, between 10am and 4pm. (Sorry, but the lie of the land means that access is impossible for wheelchairs). We are open on the day from 10am til 4pm. For those making their first visit you will find us on the A264 between Ashurst and Langton. Park up in the field by the road, and stroll past the bungalow, across the lawn, and down the stairway. Our Garden is through the heavy old green door at the bottom of the stairs. - Jean Burgess

Wild Medicine

taste suggest, is a medicine for banishing winter gloom and enlivening the liver. Later we learnt some simple preparations with our gathered herbs - an elder poultice for a sprained ankle, a dandelion and wild garlic pesto, and my favourite, a beeswaxy infusion of daisy and plantain that smelled delightful, decanted into tiny jars to be used as a medicine for knocks and bruises.

Wowo campsite near Sheffield Park has long been a dream for anyone looking to get back to wild nature. They recently held a Herbal First Aid day there and Jen Rouse went along to find out more: Our guide, Anna, was quick to dispel any of our illusions: today was not to be a first aid course, nor is she a medical herbalist. Instead, she wanted to impart something of the character of some common wayside weeds, to help us learn to identify them safely and make some simple home remedies for a variety of ailments. Anna’s enthusiasm and love for the plants was infectious; as we meandered through the beautiful grounds collecting daisies, dandelions, burdock and chickweed, she told us stories about these ‘weeds’. Just as Anna promised, we learnt a lot about the character of each plant, whose personalities she painted as vividly as if they were little people brought to life. So the resilient daisy, so quick to spring back when trodden on, is a remedy for all of life’s shocks, knocks and blows, whether physical or emotional. Yarrow, also known as staunchweed and soldier’s woundwort, is a great remedy for cuts, and even its leaves look as though they have been shredded with a blade. Dandelion, as its sunny flowers and bitter

12 • July 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

All of the plants we gathered were familiar, but knowledge of their remedial properties, once commonly known are becoming obscure. As Anna talked, I recalled my grandfather putting dock leaves on my stings, and grandmother making me hot milk with nutmeg when I couldn’t sleep. They grew up eating allotment carrots, scrumping apples and coming home scratched and purple-fingered with buckets of blackberries in autumn, so for them a working knowledge of the plants around them was a given. By passing on this wisdom, enough to help heal a sting, a cut, a cough or cold, Anna is a guardian both of wild nature and the knowledge of our ancestors. The day rounded off with a Henry David Thoreau quote brought to mind: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Jen Rouse, Spring 2013 For more information about such courses and others at Wowo Campsite visit: www.wowo.co.uk *Please note that should there be a question about it, this article does not constitute official medical advice.

Hot cheese & salsa turnovers

Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 10 mins Cooking time: 8 mins

This is a great idea for a quick, tasty snack that’s just a bit different. Enjoy!

What to do:

1. Mix together the tomatoes, red onion, cucumber and coriander or parsley (if using). 2. Heat a non-stick frying pan and add 2-3 drops of vegetable oil. Add one tortilla and turn it in the pan so that its base is lightly oiled. Add a quarter of the salsa mixture, spreading it over the surface. Sprinkle with one quarter of the cheese and season with black pepper.

Ingredients:

3. Cook over a medium heat for 1-2 minutes, until the cheese starts to melt and the tortilla browns lightly.

2 tomatoes finely chopped 1 small red onion finely chopped ¼ cucumber finely chopped 1 tbsp fresh coriander chopped (optional) 1 tsp vegetable oil 4 soft wholewheat flour tortillas 60g hard cheese grated 1 pinch ground black pepper

Price Match Guarantee*

Fold in half and keep warm while cooking the remaining tortillas in the same way. Slice in half and serve while hot. Tip 1: If you don’t have any fresh herbs, use 1 tsp dried mixed herbs instead. Tip 2: Try using 4-5 chopped spring onions instead of red onion. Tip 3: Fire up the filling a little by adding about ½ teaspoon of finely chopped red or green chilli - or enough to suit your taste! This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life website

“I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ wh en I heard about it. The fact that it is del ivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ash down Forest area that are hard to reach. This was proved to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km drivew ay! I’ve had great results advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Bui lding

Brian Kentfield, Chairman of the High Weald Joint Advisory Committee, said: “This locally prepared plan provides a means by which all public bodies can judge, and be judged, on their duty to have regard to the purposes of AONB designation. However the High Weald landscape is everyone’s responsibility and this plan sets out actions that everyone who lives, works or visits the area can take to ensure that it stays beautiful”. The plan is a locally prepared and agreed statement of public policy for managing the area and has been produced jointly by the area’s 15 local authorities through the High Weald Joint Advisory Committee. Ashdown Forest Cycling We know that the the Ashdown Forest is unparalleled in its natural beauty and unspoilt landscapes. For cyclists, that means a wonderful area to enjoy. The many road cycling routes offer scenery unlike anywhere else. Cycling is a sport that many love and this area has long been a destination for some of the world’s top class cyclists. Enter the all new ‘Ashdown Forest Cycling’. We ask founding member Andy Boyce about this new group: Who formed Ashdown Forest Cycling? It was formed by myself and a couple of cycling colleagues who are passionate about promoting cycling in the Ashdown Forest. What was the idea behind this? As keen cyclists we have ridden most of the country (and overseas) and feel that Ashdown Forest has

InGear Quickvit Trainsharp’ ride near Kings Standing in Ashdown Forest last month

as much, if not more to offer than so many places but it is not very well publicised. We also wanted to use our website to help promote ‘cycling friendly’ facilities in the area. What are you hoping to achieve with the club? To bring other keen cyclists into the area so that they can enjoy the fantastic rides and scenery and also generate business for local enterprises. We wanted to create an easy-to-use website for cyclists e.g. where they can download routes and maps. People can also share their rides with others, therefore creating a community environment. In the

future we will be organising rides led by a cyclist familiar with the landscape. Any message to potential members? We would like to encourage keen cyclists to register on the site, it’s free of charge and we will send alerts when new routes are posted and when rides are taking place. Businesses wishing to promote themselves as ‘cycling friendly’ can get a free listing on the website as well. For more information visit: www.ashdownforestcycling.co.uk

mums the Word... Holidays coming up… For a Fantastic FREE day out try:

Screens V. Real-life Need help to keep the kids off the screens? Try: Gardening for kids, Growing Herbs Instead of growing from seed, buy a plastic pot of basil from the food section of the supermarket. Get 5 or more additional little plant pots filled with compost. Take the basil plant out of the pot and you’ll see it’s actually made up of around 40 individual plants or “strands.” Just peel off one at a time and plant one in each pot. Put them on a window sill and water daily. You’ll need to pinch off the top pair of leaves every so often to stop it growing up too tall; it should start branching out and getting really bushy.

Tilgate Park, Crawley

(winner of Netmum’s Gold Award for free days out) Children’s Play Areas - Walled Garden & Café - Craft Units - Picnic Areas (sorry, no barbecues) - GreenZone environmental centre - Toilets (incl. Disabled) From Stunning lakes, lawns and gardens to miles of woodland and bridleways for long leisurely walks. Plus some excellent facilities.

Tilgate Nature Centre Tilgate Park has it very own Nature Centre which houses a huge variety of animals from endangered species to farmyard favourites. The team at the Nature Centre also organise educational sessions for schools and groups and also run the Tilgate Nature Club for those children who love nature and the great outdoors. Conservation is also high on the agenda at the Nature Centre where many successful breeding programmes of vulnerable and endangered species have taken place.

History and Conservation Tilgate Park has had a long and varied history from the discovery of dinosaur bones through to use in the 17th century iron industry to becoming a palatial estate to being used by Sir Malcolm Campbell for flotation trials prior to his water speed world record!

When they’re big enough, place outside. The smell is gorgeous and it can be used on loads of Summer dishes from pizza to salads. Idea: the kids can make mini-pizzas with pitta-bread and use the basil they grew! Tip: This works well with other herbs, such as coriander, too

‘My mum always told me to walk into a place as if I owned it. By that she meant to walk in with your head up and high (with) confidence. I find that’s been excellent advice. If you act as if you’re not worthy (of the job, the man, the respect), others will prey on that. But if you act as if you’re really something, that attitude will be contagious and others will respond accordingly!’ – anon

Install a security Package Installing good security software with both antivirus and a firewall is a great way to stay safe. Most will actually block websites known to be unsafe and your firewall will prevent data being sent out without your knowledge. The Computer Studio, for instance, would be happy to do this for you. Update vulnerable software Choose a secure password Prevent getting hacked by choosing a secure password for email, social networking and anything else you would not want hacked. Hackers can gain access in seconds if your password is too easy. A secure password is at least 8 characters long and has at least three of the following: · · · ·

Capital letters Lower case letters Symbols (For example,? ! £ @) Numbers

One of the most common ways to be infected is due to security flaws in software that your security already trusts. When updates are needed, ensure that you go to the right place to get them, don’t just click the box that pops up: · To update Flash player go to get.adobe.com/flashplayer · To update Windows Vista & 7: Click the circle in the bottom left, then ‘All Programs’, then ‘Windows Update’. · To update Windows 8, just type ‘Windows Update’ on the start screen and select the tile. · To update your Mac, click the Apple in the top left, then click ‘software update’ For more in-depth advice, visit www.getsafeonline.org Feel free to contact the Computer Studio on 01892 661 116 for help with this or any other computer support. The Plant Hunters & The Great Gardens of Sussex By Katy Brown

An Extract from her booklet: ‘The Great Gardens of Sussex’ “Such gardens are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful’ and sitting in the shade” Rudyard Kipling. Why in Sussex? One reason why Sussex boasts so many great gardens (Wakehurst, Borde Hill, Nymans, The High Beeches & Leonardslee) is that the fertile acid soil and high rainfall of the High Weald provide the ideal climatic conditions for experimentation with non-native plants and shrubs. Add to this, sheltered positions and varying micro-climates across estates and one can see the area as a veritable paradise for gardeners. But we need to look more closely at why they all developed in the latter part of the 19th century and flourished in the years before the Second World War, with the “Sussex Style” reaching a peak in the 20’s and 30’s. All were in fact the indirect result of the expansion of the railways in the Victorian period which saw Sussex develop as an ideal place for a country estate for those who had made their fortunes in the City of London or in commerce. Such estates were perfect for relaxing after the pressures of work and for entertaining friends at the weekends. None of the owners came from the landed aristocracy; none of these estates had been given to ancestors at the time of the Norman Conquest. All belonged to families who had acquired their wealth more recently and their gardening involvements provided a relief from the city, business and public activities. Why Gardening? But an interest in gardening does not necessarily 24 • July 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

follow from the possession of a country estate and what we see in the great Sussex gardens is not just a matter of gardens as rich men’s toys but something far more significant. To explain this we need to look at the climate of the times, at the scientific drive behind the development of gardening and at the stimulus provided by the Royal Horticultural Society. Plant Hunting The importance of plant hunting in the development of these great gardens can’t be over-estimated. If we look at the plants at Wakehurst Place, for example, we find that they come from China, Australasia, South East Asia, North and South America, The Himalayas, Russia and Alaska, and the picture is similar for all the gardens. All the garden owners supported plant hunting expeditions, Harold Comber, the son of the head gardener at Nymans, himself became a notable plant hunter and, at The High Beeches, Anne Boscawen and her husband have continued the tradition into the present day, making expeditions to Nepal and Buhtan. Tony Schilling, who ran Wakehurst Place from 1967-1991, was a leading plant hunter in the Himalayas and hence the Asian Heath Garden at Wakehurst is named after him. When not actively involved in supporting expeditions, owners could enrich their collections by buying from the great nurseries of the period, above all James Veitch and Co. and A.Bee and Co, founded by Arthur Bulley, who also supported plant hunters with commercial advantage in view. Frank Kingdon-Ward

David Douglas

George Forrest

could also, together with their able and experienced head gardeners, engage in experimentation and propagation at home. The plants which were introduced into Great Britain as a result of such expeditions and experimentation permanently changed the nature of our great gardens.

Kingdon-Ward gave us primulas, poppies, cotoneasters and rhododendrons and his finds also included the Rhododendron Wardii. This boasts the most beautiful lemon-yellow flowers which at Leonardslee is thought to have “the finest yellow flowers in the genus”.

The Hunters

Douglas died a gruesome death when, because of his extremely weakened eye-sight, he seems to have fallen into an animal trap already containing an angry bull. Forrest, who wrote on an expedition in 1904,

It took a special type of person to be a plant hunter in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Reading of their exploits and the hardships they endured is enough to make one question their sanity, though their obsessive enthusiasm for the task is never in question. They risked severe physical hardship, faced dangers from local inhabitants and terrain, fell prey to illnesses which often permanently weakened them and shortened their lives, not to mention being separated from their families for long periods. And on top of this they faced additional difficulties in bringing home their precious plants, seeds and photographs. Heavy photographic plates were often damaged in transit and plant material rotted or died during long sea voyages. David Douglas (1799-1834), George Forrest (1873-1932), Ernest ‘Chinese’ Wilson (1876-1930), and Frank Kingdon-Ward (1885-1958) are men to whom the world of gardening and horticulture owes an enormous debt. Douglas introduced the fir which carries his name and which became an important feature of British gardens, providing wind breaks and shelter for more tender plants. Forrest, described in his obituary as “the greatest plant hunter of his generation”, is remembered by the range of plants, including primulas and outstanding rhododendrons, which bear his name. Wilson brought home the beautiful Magnolia sinensis, the impressive Primula pulverulenta and the much sought after Davidia involucrata or handkerchief tree. 26 • July 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

“I am heartily sick of China and everything Chinese, but will have to stick to my guns”, was only 59 when he died. Kingdon –Ward suffered from malaria and the unwelcome attention of leeches. Wilson writes amusingly of waking at 2am during his 1903 expedition to find his blanket missing and, “…pulling it over me again I disturbed four halfdrowned chickens whom my thoughtless men had tied to a post alongside my bed. These chickens, resenting the loss of the blanket, tried to follow it and succeeded in nearly blinding me with mud”. But he may be thought to speak for all the hunters when he writes that such hardships, “..count for nothing, since I have lived in Nature’s boundless halls and drank deeply of her pleasures. To wander through tropical or temperate forest with tree-trunks more stately than gothic columns, beneath a canopy of foliage more lovely in its varied forms than the roof of any building fashioned by man…where does the hardship figure when the reward is such?” It was to the inspiration and determination of men like Wilson that the great gardens owed so many of their outstanding plants and shrubs, not least the richly coloured rhododendrons, camelias, azaleas and magnolias which are such a delight to visitors.

WITH COMPLIMENTS www.kitchensbespoke.co.uk

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Gardening in July Article by Michael Dongray,

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Fruit and Vegetables

Lawns

Pinch out side shoots of tomatoes & feed on a regular basis with a liquid tomato feed. Sow seeds of Cabbage, spinach, turnip, endive, mustard, cress, lettuce, parsley and radish.

In hot weather raise the blades on the lawnmower to a higher setting. If it is not too dry apply a quick acting summer feed.

Train espalier and dwarf fruit trees. Protect from birds.Potatoes may need a final earthing up.Keep an eye out for pest and disease. Treat Apple Scab. Harvest onions when the leaves turn yellow and flop over.

Roses Dead head roses unless being grown for their display of hips in the autumn. Watch out for greenfly, rust, mildew and blackspot. Spray on a regular basis being sure to follow instructions on the box.

Shrubs Prune back shrubs such as philadelphus and deutzia as the flowering season comes to an end.

Miscellaneous Dead head flower stems of lupins to encourage further flowering. Give a first clipping to hedges of beech, hornbeam, privet and leylandii. Lift, divide and replant overgrown clumps of bearded iris. Dead head annuals to keep them flowering.

volunteers are free to choose in which category/ categories they are willing to help, and they may accept or decline any request to do a job if it is not convenient for them. Most volunteers do only one or two jobs per month. Many have a regular client and so build up a friendly relationship with him or her. Volunteers may claim for mileage and telephone calls. I have been a volunteer with CARE for nearly 12 years and I have found it to be a tremendously rewarding and enriching experience. We have over 200 clients, but we desperately need more volunteers since we face increased requests for help. If you would like more information call: 01444 455955, or call me, Clive Welland, on 01444 831234. We shall be delighted to hear from you!

Rudyard Kipling, Literary Giant of Sussex

By Alexander Ayton, extracted from her book ‘Sussex Remembered’

Kipling lived in Burwash, East Sussex for many year of his life. As the village is a stones throw from the Ashdown Forest area and because of Kipling’s legacy we felt it fitting to include this article about his life: Rudyard Kipling, the foremost writer of his time and creator of The Jungle Book and the Just So Stories, countless poems, short stories and novels, had a passion for Sussex, his home from 1897 until his death in 1936. Born in India in 1865 to English parents, he was educated in England like many children of his background at the time. As an adult – slight, just 5ft 6in, balding and short-sighted with a strong cleft chin and amoustache – he developed a glittering international writing career in Lahore, South Africa and Vermont where he spent the first four years of his marriage.

In 1887, after a family rift with his brother-in-law, he left Vermont for England to settle in Rottingdean on the Sussex coast with his American wife Caroline Balestier – Carrie, then pregnant with their son John – and their two young daughters, Josephine and Elsie. For three guineas a week, he rented The Elms, a ‘marine residence’ overlooking the Green at Rottingdean. Kipling knew the village well. Over the years, he had often stayed with Georgiana – Aunt Georgie – and her husband, the painter Edward Burne-Jones in North End House nearby. In addition to the Burne-Jones family, his cousin, the future prime minister Stanley Baldwin, had married Lucy, the eldest daughter of the Ridsdales who lived in the Dene by the Green. In his autobiography, Something of Myself, Kipling described the close proximity of the Dene, North End House and the Elms where ‘One could throw a cricket-ball from any one house to the other.’ He also described ‘packing farm-carts filled with mixed babies – Stanley Baldwin’s and ours – and despatching them into the safe clean heart of the motherly Downs for jam-smeared picnics. Those Downs moved me to write some verses called ‘Sussex’ . ‘Sussex’ became the unofficial anthem of the county. Other great works such as Kim, Stalky and Co., the Just So Stories and his poems ‘Recessional’ and ‘The Absent-Minded Beggar’ were written at the Elms, where the chalk cliffs and the peace of Rottingdean inspired him. A family man, he was delighted when his children went swimming using ‘Trunky’ Thomas’s bathing machine or fishing off Magnus Volk’s outlandish contraption, the ‘Pioneer’, the stilted passenger carriage of the ‘Daddy-Long-Legs’ railway moored at the pier head off Rottingdean. He was also a ‘maniac’ motorist, venturing into the Sussex countryside in ‘his very own’ locomobile, nick-named the Holy Terror or Coughing Jane, driven by his chauffeur and the inspiration for ‘Steam Tactics’, written in 1902. The Kiplings enjoyed an enviable lifestyle spending

the winter months in warmer climates. In 1898, the family spent four months in Cape Province, SouthAfrica in TheWoolsack, the Dutch colonial home given to them by Cecil Rhodes. In 1899, they set off once again, taking Carrie, Josephine and Elsie on a trip to America. After a rough crossing, tragedy struck in New York when Kipling and his eldest daughter Josephine, contracted pneumonia. Kipling pulled through but Josephine, aged just six died, leaving her parents bereft. Josephine, Kipling’s fairhaired ‘little American’ and the ‘best beloved’ child, was the apple of her father’s eye. After her death, Elsie, his younger daughter wrote later: ‘A light had gone out that could never be rekindled.’ On their return to Rottingdean, Kipling was haunted by Josephine’s spirit all around him. This, and the local publican of the White Horse running doubledecker horse buses packed with Brighton trippers hoping to glimpse their hero in his garden, was the last straw. Carrie began house hunting, wisely abandoning the Holy Terror, their unreliable American 34 • July 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

steam-driven locomobile to take a train to Etchingham and a ‘fly’ – a horse drawn carriage – to view Bateman’s in Burwash, East Sussex. On entering the house, Kipling ‘felt her spirit – her Feng Shui – to be good’. However, the owner had just let it, and they were obliged to wait until the tenancy was up before buying it for £9,300. On 2nd September 1902, Carrie, Elsie and John moved to Bateman’s and Kipling joined them the next day. The Jacobean house in the Dudwell Valley was built in 1634. It was inaccessible, prone to flooding and lacked modern facilities such as a bathroom, running water upstairs or electricity but it was exactly what Kipling wanted – ‘a good and peaceable place’.

After his experiences in Rottingdean, Kipling was keener than ever to preserve his privacy, eventually acquiring more than 300 acres through 14 separate conveyances. Carrie’s office had a porthole overlooking the hall, enabling her to monitor visitors to the house. There was no telephone, as Kipling preferred to send urgent messages by telegram or telephone from the Burwash post office. He burned his old papers in the stone fireplace, much to the dismay of his friend and American publisher Frank Doubleday. But Kipling was intensely private, declaring: ‘No one’s going to make a monkey out of me after I die.’ The second part of this extract will be featured in our August issue. ‘Sussex Remebered’ by Alexander Ayton is available to buy from: The Book Stop, The High Street, Lindfield, The Mint House, The High Street, Hurstpierpoint and The Bluebell Railway Gift Shops, Horsted Keynes and Sheffield Park.

Kipling’s financial rewards were the equivalent of J.K. Rowling’s today, enabling him to set about improving his new home and the 33 acres that came with the property. The mill was converted to supply electricity to light the house with the aid of Sir William Willcocks who had installed the first Aswan Dam, a feat Kipling dismissed in comical comparison as ‘a info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152
