Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Gardening in June Article by Michael Dongray,
Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor
Annuals, Bulbs and Herbaceous Remove fading and dead flowers on your annuals and herbaceous perennial plants. Removing the finished flowers will promote a longer flowering season. Perennial and biennial plants can be started from seed sown directly into the garden.
Shrubs Summer flowering shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches.
Vegetables and Fruit
Spring flowering perennials can be divided and transplanted. Be sure to do this during the coolest part of the day and water the plants thoroughly after transplanting.
Now is the time to start your autumn and winter vegetables. Sow seeds of onions, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and winter cauliflower directly into the garden early in the month. Do not spray any fruit with insecticide if still flowering as this may harm pollinating insects leading to a poor fruit yield. Keep all fruit well watered during dry periods. New raspberry shoots can be tied in this month.
Roses
Miscellaneous
Continue to plant container grown perennials. Always take time to properly prepare the soil by mixing generous quantities of soil improver compost or well composted manure with your existing soil.
Continue feeding roses with a general rose fertilizer. Spray against pest and disease preferably with an organic product. Dead head faded blooms on a regular basis.

‘Explore, Dream, Discover’ (Mark Twain)
hopefully this row can raise the profile slightly of the disease and it’s symptoms. What will the hardest part of your journey be?
Daryl Farmer who lives near Forest Row is training on the Weirwood Reservoir (just to the north of Ashdown Forest) for an inconceivable, once-in-a-lifetime challenge next year, here he explains: Please describe your challenge In June 2014 I will be rowing solo across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Hawaii. No engine, no sails, just me, my boat Bojangles, and some oars! This is a distance of 2500 miles in a straight line, although I will be rowing much further as I will be pushed and blown off route on a regular basis. It will mean I will be out at sea, with no support, completely selfsufficient for around 3 months. I am using Weirwood Reservoir for training and testing in the lead up to the crossing. You’ll be supporting ‘The Shark and Coral Conservation Trust’, ‘Earthrace Conservation Organisation’ & ‘ The James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer’. What was your reasons behind this support and the inspiration for this ‘row’? A few years ago two documentaries changed my life, The Cove, about the Taiji dolphin hunts, and Sharkwater, about the scale of the shark finning problem. They made me get up and try to make some noise about these two 10 • June 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
cruel and very well hidden crimes against our precious ocean life. As for the actual row, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and a few events last year gave me the final ‘push’ to actually commit to it. One was the sudden loss of my Mum to Kidney cancer, and the other was meeting some really inspirational people, mainly Pete Bethune from Earthrace Conservation, who really inspired me to raise the bar and make a bit more noise for our oceans. Ocean awareness, and in particular shark finning and the Japan dolphin hunts is an easily hidden problem and it needs more exposure before it’s too late. People need to realise that we are an ocean planet, and we need healthy oceans for our survival. Removing an apex predator from an ecosystem will always have a disastrous impact. Sharks have been on this planet for over 400 million years, and in the last 50 years we have hunted many species to the brink of extinction.
There are several aspects to this expedition which will be tough. Psychologically I think it will be very tough to row 10 miles in a shift, then get some rest and sleep, to wake up to find I’ve possibly drifted back 15 miles! It is very much an endurance event, to keep going, day after day, through blisters, salt sores, back problems, etc. is what will get me to the other side, and that is hopefully where my previous endurance running events may help me out. I also think it will be quite hard to adapt back to a ‘normal’ life after 3 months of isolation at sea. What support have you had? I am getting great support locally from Meridian FM to Weir Wood Sailing Club and local schools. My aim is to get more schools
The kidney cancer link is obviously a very personal one to me since losing my mum to misdiagnosed kidney cancer last year. Had I known what I know now (the earliest signs of this disease), I am convinced she would still be here to see me achieving this dream. I felt I needed to try to turn this loss into something positive, and info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

THE LOCAL HOME FOR BUSINESS After more than 25 years in the hands of the Lacey family, the Company which owns Horsted Keynes Industrial Park has been sold to Chartered Surveyor John Hawkins.
involved, as this is the generation who can change the way we treat our oceans and the life within them. What further support are you looking for? I am also looking for some local companies to get behind this adventure, and take advantage of some incredible PR that will come in the build up to this challenge. Here is a fact to understand the enormity of this event and how it will be viewed: More people have gone into space than have rowed across an ocean. Good luck Daryl!

Sudoku
Occupying a 5 acre landscaped site, the park is just over a mile from the popular village of Horsted Keynes and provides a range of business units totalling 37,000 sq ft with extensive parking and yard areas. Space is available from single rooms to 4,500 sq ft. The Park can trace its origins to use as a Jam Factory, hatchery and latterly as a food distribution centre run by Duncan Lacey Foods who converted the buildings to individual units 20 years ago. Commenting on the acquisition, John Hawkins said “I want to build on the good work done by Rodney Lacey who has managed the site and to bring in some new ideas based on my experience of running another Business Park, Turkey Mill at Maidstone.” “The first noticeable change is a rebranding to Horsted Keynes Business Park and the introduction of a new logo with the slogan of ‘The Home for Local Business’.” “Having regularly visited Horsted Keynes for the last 18 months, I’ve been impressed with the amount of excellent business being started and run in the area and we want to create business space suitable for clients to run and expand those enterprises. Managing a Business Park is like running a hotel where we need to provide flexibility for clients to move from one unit to another as they expand or contract” says John Hawkins who has been in the property industry for 40 years. Blind Veterans 100K Walk By Janet Brummer
On 22nd June my friend Liz Davis and I will be walking the 100k from London to Brighton to raise money for Blind Veterans UK. I first started walking as a leisurely sport to keep fit in 2004. It was Liz who recommended a couple of walking groups which she belonged to which were ‘the Sussex 12 milers’ and ‘the long distance walkers association’. In 2008 I walked my first marathon (Beachyhead) with a few friends; Liz was running this event. We had an exhilarating day, walking the South Downs with its challenging hills and climbs, and stunning views. The Ashdown Forest Living has grown from strength to strength with the majority of our customers continually renewing because our advertising has proven results.
“I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ wh en I heard about it. The fact that it is del ivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ash down Forest area that are hard to reach. This was proved to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km drivew ay! I’ve had great results advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Bui lding

Local History Notes
The Priest House, West Hoathly A Hidden Gem of the High Weald, just north of the Ashdown Forest
‘The only one of its kind open to the public, this beautiful 15th century Wealden hall house stands in a traditional cottage garden on the edge of the Ashdown Forest in picturesque West Hoathly’. In the year 1392 Pope Urban VI gave the Cluniac Priory of St. Pancras in Lewes permission to appropriate land in the parishes of West Hoathly, Patcham, Ditchling and Wivelsfield to compensate the Priory for revenue lost during raids on the Sussex coast by French and Spanish marauders. The Manor of the Rectory of West Hoathly was created from land that had previously formed part of the Manor of Lindfield. However, the Manor lands were sadly neglected and in 1426 the parishioners petitioned Pope Martin V about the Priory’s mismanagement. It was possibly as a response to this letter that The Priest House was built in the late 1420’s as an estate office - although it is difficult to identify the building precisely in the records. Its current name is probably of recent origin. It is likely that the house was originally occupied by a bailiff or steward, who was responsible
for the day to day running of the Manor, however in 1524 the Priory leased the Rectory Manor to John Browne, a `husbandman’ (a farmer or tradesman) of the parish and The Priest House became a family home. During the Dissolution of the monasteries Henry VIII seized the property of Lewes Priory in 1538 and the Browne’s Manor was given to court favourite Thomas Cromwell, the King’s secretary and chief adviser. In 1540 when Cromwell fell from grace and was beheaded the Manor formed part of the divorce settlement of Henry VIII’s doomed marriage to Anne of Cleves, his fourth wife, who thus took ownership. John Browne, however, continued as tenant throughout this time, until his death in 1546 when he was succeeded by his son Thomas. After the death of Anne of Cleves the property reverted to the Crown and Thomas was to pay rent to Queen Mary and subsequently
her sister, Elizabeth I. In 1560 the Queen sold all the property that had belonged to Lewes Priory to two land speculators who in turn sold the Priest House to the long-term tenants, the Browne’s, who could at last own their family home. Thomas Browne subsequently set about modernising the building. The house was originally an open hall, with a living room and upper chamber on the north end and a service end with a buttery and pantry to the south; the roof was likely thatched. However, Thomas had begun to mine iron ore on his land for the foundries working around West Hoathly. He now styled himself `yeoman’ and needed a house to match

Peace John Godwin King CBE, of Stonelands, West Hoathly. It was in a ruinous state but thanks to Godwin King’s conservationist outlook, over the following three years he had the house restored. Being a neighbour of well-known garden writer William Robinson (of Gravetye Manor) and friend of the great Victorian garden designer Gertrude Jeykll he also created a small cottage garden following their design philosophies.

his new status. It was during those prosperous years of Elizabeth I’s reign that money became available for building and many houses were remodelled and improved. New ones were built with chimneys in the latest fashion, while existing buildings, like The Priest House, had chimneys and upper floors inserted. Stone, being plentiful locally, was used for the fireplaces and brick, a relatively new but increasingly popular building material, was used for the flues and external chimneystack.
In 1908 it was opened to the public, with a museum in the north end to display his collection of locally gathered artefacts, and quarters for a resident Custodian in the former service end. In 1935 John Godwin King presented The Priest House and its contents, with an endowment, to the Sussex Archaeological Society, having sat on the Society’s governing Council for many years.

Thomas had the ground floor level lowered to accommodate the massive stone chimney that replaced the medieval open hearth. The chimney enabled two new rooms to be created upstairs, each with their own fireplace. The thatched roof was replaced with Horsham stone but the new tiles were so heavy that the roof timbers had to be reinforced to take the weight. By the end of the 16th century The Priest House was probably the finest building in the village and Thomas Browne could call himself `Squire’.
John Godwin King brought The Priest House in 1905 and restored it over the following 3 years.
The house remained in the hands of the Browne family for another hundred years but their fortunes were in decline and in 1695 the house and Manor had to be sold to pay debts. The house exchanged hands a few times over the next 200 years but the various owners did little to maintain it. For the most part, it was rented during this period. Finally in 1905, after years of neglect, the house was bought by a local ardent liberal and Justice of the

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Gardening: Growing Snapdragons
A Mothers Quote of the month: ‘I love my mum. No matter what we go through, and no matter how much we argue, I know in the end, she’ll always be there for me’
Things to do on a rainy day Marble runs Use old cereal boxes, loo rolls and other empty containers to make a home-made run. Build up as high as you want to - glue and sellotape should be enough to hold the pieces in place and you can use sturdier cardboard on the base to ensure it holds the upper levels securely. This is a great activity as you can add to it each day, creating new sections, slides and tubes as you go!
Dolly parachutes Use old pieces of fabric and string to make dolly/teddy parachutes. Once they’re stitched together 22 • June 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
Snap Dragons are brilliant fun for kids once they are fully grown. Be warned, they may well get snapped off and used as puppets... They smell lovely too. To start from seed, plant them in a tray and leave on a sunny window-sill. Cover the tray with clingfilm to keep in the heat and moisture. Plant out when they are big enough to handle. They grow best in full sun. As we’ve had a late Spring this year you should still be able to sow in June for late blooms.
stand all of them on the window sill and launch them out to see which one wins.
Margarine tub boats Make margarine tub boats. You can do this in the sink, bath, pond. Card and old lolly sticks make great sails and if your little one is feeling creative let them paint and decorate them too.
Make a crazy cress head Get some dried out egg shells, paint a funny face on the surface, Once dry, fill wiith damp cotton wool and cress seeds and watch their crazy cress hair start to grow! info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152
Now in its second year, the project partners would like to remind members of the public to report their sightings of turtle doves to a special hotline, either by phone 01603 697527 or email turtledove@rspb.org.uk
Hotline for Turtle Doves The gentle purr of the turtle dove was once the sound of summer, enjoyed for a few brief months from early May until the birds’ departure back to Africa in August. But their evocative call is becoming increasingly rare following rapid and perpetual population declines. Turtle doves were once widespread across much of England and Wales, but the most recent figures show that the population in the south east, one
of the last remaining strongholds, has fallen by 84 per cent since 1995.
Last year, there was a great response and the hotline had over 425 calls reporting the elusive bird, which has helped map where the birds are breeding and highlight any hotspots to focus the project’s conservation efforts. Please spread the word in the Ashdown Forest area this year - Thank you.
At this current rate of change, if we don’t help this species, scientists calculate there will be fewer than 1000 pairs by 2020. To help reverse the fortunes of the turtle dove, Operation Turtle Dove was launched last summer by the RSPB, Conservation Grade, Pensthorpe Conservation Trust and Natural England.

Rose Cottage Garden
National Garden Scheme
Places to visit in June We feature two local NGS gardens as well as listing other open gardens in the Ashdown Forest area. Rose Cottage Garden Made by the present owners over twenty years, and open for the NGS since 1997, the garden is hidden down a footpath behind tall hedges; a plantsman’s garden with views across an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Within ¼ hectare (2/3 acre), oldfashioned roses and exuberant cottage-style planting are incorporated into a strong design, creating a garden often described by visitors as harmonious and tranquil. It incorporates modern sculptures from a Sussex sculptor – some made specifically for the garden – and Victorian carvings from a demolished London church. Fun and humour are a feature of this relaxed and sometimes quirky garden, with home-made artefacts, ‘found’ objects and a children’s ‘creepie-crawlie’ trail. An organic vegetable garden is productive and attractively integrated into the garden design. There are old brick paths, shady walks and little secret places; two ponds, one with large koi carp, 26 • June 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
the other a small boggy frog pond. Self-seeding produces plant combinations - many are allowed to remain – this is not a rigidly controlled garden. Homemade teas in an assortment of old china complete the friendly atmosphere. Hadlow Down, TN22 4HJ. Open: Sunday 23rd June, 2-5:30pm. Also by appointment 01825 8303124, e: kenmines@hotmail.com. Fletching Garden Trio Fletching Village is centred around the Parish Church of St Andrew and St Mary the Virgin which in 1264 Simon de Montford visited on the eve of the battle of Lewes. The village borders Sheffield Park Garden (National Trust), famed for its autumn colour. The three lovely cottage gardens differing in size and style, maintained by owners, are planted to please the senses and packed with interest:. The Granary is a charming tranquil one acre garden created over 13 years which sits in an idyllic setting fronting a stretch of the river Ouse. It features a newly landscaped courtyard area, a vibrant and productive

Cycling, Walking or Riding: it d Forest Way Country Park

Delight in the great outdoors by enjoying a day out exploring the Forest Way. The flat, tree-lined track winds through a peaceful, historic countryside of small fields and scattered farmsteads among wooded, rolling hills. This old Railway Line was opened in 1866 as a continuation of the Three Bridges line. It was a busy commuter line until it eventually fell under Beeching’s axe precisely 100 years later in 1966. Ironically, Dr Beeching lived in East Grinstead and regularly used this line to travel up to London! However, happily for walkers and cyclists, the disused railway line was bought by East Sussex County Council in 1971 and designated as a Country Park in 1974. It is part of the ‘High Weald Landscape Trail’ (stretching from Horsham to Rye); designated ‘route 21’ of the Sustrans National Cycle Network, plus incorporated into ‘Avenue Verte’ - a new cycling route connecting London to Paris. Keep your eye out for for the River Medway as it follows a good portion of the route. 1. As you leave East Grinstead you cross from the western to the eastern hemisphere. 2. Steps up on to the embankment lead to a view of the ruins of moated Brambletye Manor. It fell into decay after 1683 when owner Sir James Richard, out hunting in Ashdown Forest, was warned he was about to be apprehended for treason. He spurred his horse for the coast and fled to the court of Spain. 3. You come to the village of Forest Row and cross towards Tablehurst Farm. 4. You will pass a mobile phone mast bristling with aerials on the right as you pass Blackberry Cottage. 30 • June 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
5. Paupersdale Wood, this wide ride is a good place for butterflies on a sunny day. The woods here are used for pheasant-rearing; you may see the grainhoppers and maggot dispensers the birds feed from after they are released from the breeding pens. 6. Clay, Clay everywhere… Names hereabouts mention clay and marl pits. Marl (a limy clay) was spread on fields to improve soil texture. 7. Welcome rest A tea garden for walkers (fine days only!) and a camping site, beside what is probably a flooded clay pit. 8. Two storeyed stiles These unusual stiles suggest the field beyond the St Ives Lane has been used for deer farming. 9. Roman road? At some point you will cross the line of the Roman road from Lewes to London. You can see Gallypot Street where the line runs die-straight to the south. No meandering for those Romans, just a nice straight line… 10. Hartfield This attractive Ashdown Forest village has largely white weatherboard buildings. The “hart’”from its Forest beginnings features on various signs, and “Pooh Corner” can be visited for a cup of tea – of course AA Milne wrote his famous pooh bear stories in Hartfield.

11. An elegant spire The churchyard is as attractive as the elegant spire that can be seen from afar. 12. Withyham The four-square tower of St Michael and All Angels Church contrasts with Hartfield’s slender spire. Within are decorated ceilings and a wealth of monuments to the Sackville family. The summer scent of the lime tree enlivens the churchyard. 13. Buckhurst Park You will get just a glimpse of the house on the site of the original Sackville home. Enjoy instead the parkland scenery. The covered “well” as you enter the Park is actually a chalybeate (iron-containing) spring. 14. The springline
Local gentry used to hold grand picnics amongst the huge rocks. 20. Eridge Green The ornate wind vane on the church incorporates the familiar Nevill rose. 21. Eridge Park Enjoy the space and peace as you enter what is likely one of the oldest deer parks in the country. The tall fences to contain the deer are hidden in the valleys and at first glance nothing man-made breaks the horizon. For a more accurate map please see the ‘High Weald Landscape Trail’ on the High Weald AONB website. With thanks to the High Weald AONB for information provided towards this article.
Iron-rich water seeps from the ground in Legg Wood cutting a gill for itself. The springs here rise where sandy soils meet the sticky and water-resistant clay you have just walked through.Silvery- grey soils underfoot prepare you for the sandstone outcrops half-hidden in the trees. 15. An unusual use of bricks Old Groombridge lies to the north, near the Jacobean Groombridge Place. See the 1625 “Gothic’” brick church - It is uncommon to find brick used for such an important building. 16. Towards Kent. There are fine views towards Kent’s greensand ridge and the North Downs as you cross the undulating country south of Tunbridge Wells. 17. Harrison’s Rocks Detour to see this outcrop, one of the most popular climbing areas in south-east England. Wooden boxing and matting help to reduce erosion from trampling around the base of the rocks. 18. Nevill Estate The decoration on Normans Cottages just south of Park Corner introduces you to the Abergavenny or Nevill Estate. You will soon recognise the ornate ‘A’ and the pottery medallions on the decorative course. The ridge finials and the chimney pots are also typical 19th century clay products. 19. Eridge Rocks View the awe-inspiring rocks themselves and then take a closer look at the treasure of mosses, liverworts, lichens and filmy ferns clinging to the rocks. 32 • June 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
