Here are just some of the products customers will be able to find on display: Ironmongery, Decking and Fencing, Worktops, Doors, Insulation, Soundproofing, Velux windows, Stair parts, Flooring & Wood treatments and more. There is also an on-site café for refreshments, so you can browse the showroom at your leisure! Mid-Sussex Timber is one of the largest timber stockists in Sussex. They have state of the art milling machinery that is capable of producing any profile or bespoke moulding. They also now stock a full range of Building materials, including Bricks, Blocks, Sand and Cement

Founder Roy D Waters was the son of builder James Waters of Forest Row Builders. He worked with his father but soon envisioned becoming a supplier to the building tradesmen of the area and thus established Mid-Sussex Timber. It remains a family company that is now run by his two sons, Tim and Simon Waters. Interestingly the Waters family actually originate from Forest Row & the family tree dates back to 1624! The first branch to open was in East Grinstead in 1929. A second site opened in Haywards Heath in 1933. Then in 1966 the site of approx three acres in Forest Row was acquired which is now the main base for the very large stocks of Timber and Panel Products. The fourth site is in Crowborough, established in 1994. Today, Tim and Simon Waters envision Mid-Sussex Timber continuing as a local, independent family company that prides itself on knowledge and builds valued personal relationships with both staff and customers alike.

They would be delighted to welcome you to any of their branches to see for yourself their extensive facilities and comprehensive stock ranges.

Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning By Benjamin Morphew: When I first started my Carpet Cleaning business I decided to always use the best quality machines and chemicals available to the trade, and have stuck to this principal since. This makes it easier to achieving the high standard of cleaning that I desire for my customers. The American machine that I chose, CFR Powrflite, has powerful twin vac motors for highly efficient extraction. Combined with proven chemicals made by Amtech UK, people are very pleased with the results achieved. Carpets are not just cleaner, but the fibres are restored, thus giving a better feel to the carpet. Further wear and

tear is reduced because so much of the grit and dirt is removed. Clients have also commented on how quickly the carpets dries after cleaning. This is due no doubt to the superior suction of the twin vac motors. In choosing a more expensive type of extraction machine it meant that the manufacturer have a reputation to uphold. This is why the training course provided by the company not only focused on the machines operation, but was a well rounded comprehensive course covering recognition of carpet types, fibres and materials used and how best to clean varying carpets. Upholstery requires careful assessment of the proper chemicals to achieve optimum cleaning without causing damage and colour fade. This highly practical training has given me a full knowledge of the processes involved. I am always keen to explain and give advice as to what is involved and realistically what people can expect to achieve when having cleaning work carried out. For further peace of mind for potential customers, I carry not just the standard public liability insurance, but a specialist insurance for carpet and upholstery cleaners that covers the item being cleaned as well. For more information call Benjamin on 07850 577 274

The Freshfields of Forest Row By Vivien Hill

Most villages have local “famous names“, benefactors, characters, villains or oldest inhabitants and these may be remembered by a road, a shop name, a house or a noticeable memorial. Family memories and local reminiscences can easily be lost. Henry Ray Freshfield’s most visible memorial is the Forest Row Village Hall, with its declaration of the founder’s name in front and the coat of arms at the apex, built in memory of his grandson and “Freshfield Bank” the name of the housing estate built on land he once owned. Less apparent is the open heathland of the Ashdown Forest, Walhatch Close, improvements to Holy Trinity Church, the house and grounds of Kidbrook Park, the schools and parish charities upon all of which he had influence. Henry Freshfield bought Kidbrook Park, now Michael Hall School, from Lord Colchester in November 1874. Kidbrook had been built by William Neville, Lord Abergavenny, after 1733 on land which was part of Lancaster Great Park, now known as the Ashdown Forest. The house and 10 • March 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

grounds had frequently been updated according to the latest fashions. The house was a useful distance from London, a rich gentleman could travel from Kidbrook to London by turnpike roads. Once in the capital he could keep a close eye on his financial or parliamentary interests. Later railways made the journey much quicker. Henry Freshfield was senior partner of Freshfields, solicitors to the Bank of England, and access to London was important. As London expanded in the nineteenth century the surrounding heathland was often built over. Henry Freshfield, then living in Hampstead, was one of a group who realised that heath, rather than being bare wasteland, was a distinct environment worthy of conservation, and with others he helped preserve Hampstead Heath as open land. In modern terms he would be regarded as an experienced conservationist by the time he came to Forest Row. Ashdown Forest had become

Henry Freshfields’ son -Douglas Freshfield

ecologically degraded by the stripping of cover and the digging of stone. There were fierce disagreements between commoners exerting their rights, owners of land and freelance opportunists. Involved in these disputes since 1879 Henry Freshfield became the first chairman of the Conservators of Ashdown Forest after regulation in 1885, and the settling of the Ashdown Forest Dispute. This allowed the heathland environment to recover gradually. At Kidbrook Henry Freshfield

added a new wing, a porch, a tower and remodelled the main hall and stairs. Kidbrook Park has never been a manor house, Forest Row being in the manor of Maresfield, nevertheless successive owners of the house took a benevolent interest in the village. Henry Freshfield’s contributions were practical, such as a horse trough by the Kid in Priory Road, new seating in the church and land for a new vicarage, later Walhatch, now Walhatch Close. He chaired a committee to found a cottage hospital in East Grinstead, the poor of Forest Row then going to the workhouse in the town for basic nursing care. The schoolchildren were given a Summer Treat with games and tea and Christmas presents. Celebrations were held at Kidbrook Park on national occasions. Financial help was given to those in need in times of hardship. He was also concerned with charitable works throughout Sussex. Jane Quinton Crawford was married to Henry Freshfield in 1840, and well as the watercolours and charitable work usual for her time and class was also an author and alpinist. Mountaineering was a comparatively new activity, ladies climbed wearing riding breeches underneath their usual

long winter tweeds and were shod with strong hobnailed boots. Climbing parties were roped together with “stout sash-cord” as they pioneered the new ascents. Henry supported Jane’s hobby and their son, Douglas William Freshfield became a famous climber. The Freshfields owned land in the centre of Forest Row where, according to surviving illustrations and maps, there were two houses and a forge. The Freshfields’ grandson, Hal, died aged fourteen in 1891, apparently in a cycling accident. In his memory Henry Freshfield built the village hall in 1892 as a gift to the community. By the late nineteenth century there was a generation of working men both allowed to vote and literate, since education was now compulsory. They were often keen to learn more, talks and lantern slides were popular and many benefactors throughout the country were providing halls and institutes. These were often teetotal premises used by all sections of the community. Forest Row’s village hall when built consisted of a hall and small stage, the front part of the building housing a resident caretaker and a kitchen equipped for making soup for the poor. The Freshfield family and friends financed and ran the hall.

Henry Douglas Freshfield

A serious fire broke out the day after Henry Freshfield’s funeral in February 1895, the family financing its rebuilding to the same plans it reopened in November 1895. A commemorative plaque is visible as you enter the main doors. After his death in 1895 members of Henry Freshfield’s family continued to live in the area, taking an active part in village life and continuing the charitable works. After successive owners Kidbrook Park was sold after WWII, becoming Michael Hall School. In order to finance necessary repairs, land nearest to the village was sold for housing. The road names all have a connection with the owners of Kidbrook, the estate being known as Freshfield Bank. Henry Ray Freshfield came to Forest Row as a sixty year old man nearing retirement. Far from taking things easy he spent the next twenty years actively helping the local people, the village and the surrounding area. He should be remembered not just as a local worthy, but for his work for the wider environment, especially by those who love and enjoy the Ashdown Forest.

FOREST ROW

  Coming down the A22 Forest Row Village Hall appears as a striking building with its black and white high porch, red hanging tiles, chimneys and turret. The building is demonstrably Victorian, confident, solidly build and supremely useful, rather like its founder Henry Ray Freshfield. Originally managed by his family the hall became and still is a registered charity its purpose to provide a venue for activities. It is now financed solely from bookings and fund-raising. The hall was used for a huge variety of village activities from the beginning, light entertainments, a working men’s

club, mothers’ meetings, a cadet corps and educational activities. The Ashdown Forest Pageant held in July 1929 at Kidbrook was originally planned to raise funds for an hall extension but also benefited Sussex hospitals, other villages taking part. An additional hall was built to the north, Mrs. Hambro of Kidbrook, one of the pageant organisers opened it, now named the Peter Griffits Hall after a later benefactor.

Many people see our banner encouraging donations to re-roof the building, one of our planned projects. These include redecorating, repairing the metal-framed windows, efficient glazing and insulation. You can support the hall by JustTextGiving, FRVH12£2/£5/£10, private donations, supporting our fund-raising events or joining as a volunteer or trustee, millionaire roofers especially welcome. To find out more please phone the booking office 01342 824961 or visit www.forestrowvillagehall.org

About thirty-seven different activities including films, plays, dance and exercise classes, talks, social events, concerts and children’s parties now take place in both large and small halls.

The Ashdown Forest Living has grown from strength to strength with the majority of our customers continually renewing because our advertising has proven results.

“I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ wh en I heard about it. The fact that it is del ivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ash down Forest area that are hard to reach. This was proved to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km drivew ay! I’ve had great results advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Bui lding

Get them Growing! Something for March: Sunflowers are very easy for for kids to grow and they are very impressive when in full-bloom. The Sunflower ‘Mongolian Giant’ can grow up to 14 feet tall! Just sow the seeds straight into the ground in a sunny, sheltered spot and watch them grow and grow! Be sure to provide the stems with supports along the way. Great for giving the kids a sense of achievement and contribution to the garden.

A Mothers Quote of the month:

Screens v. Real-life

“My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.” George Washington

Can’t get the kids away from the screens? Try this… allow them to make a den in the living room, they’ll likely need spare sheets, chairs, etc. and will probably have to take the cushions off the sofa.... I know it takes a brave parent to allow this but try to remember how much fun you had doing just this when you were a kid… Just get them to promise beforehand that they’ll put everything back once they’re finished.

“A father may turn his back on his child; brothers and sisters may become inveterate enemies; husbands may desert their wives, wives their husbands. But a mother’s love endures through all.” Washington Irving

You might need to get your partner to help with this one... If your children want to get you something for Mothers Day, but don’t have pocket money to buy a present, you could always drop hints to give you ‘Mummy Vouchers’. The idea is that the kids make up vouchers for you with things like: free ‘breakfast in bed’, ‘massage’, ‘putting away the shopping’, ‘cup of tea’ etc. written on the voucher for you to use whenever you want.

Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the

Borde Hill Garden Visionary

This year, the award-winning Borde Hill Garden celebrates one and half centuries of gardening history. The vision of one man Colonel Stephenson R Clarke (1862-1948) and his love affair with nature led to the establishment of one of the most beautiful gardens in Britain. Today plant enthusiasts can visit Borde Hill and still experience the passion and knowledge which led Stephen R Clarke and the Great Victorian Plant Hunters to collect flora and fauna from every corner of the globe. History of Borde Hill House The House was originally built in 1598 by Stephen Borde who was the grandson of Andrew Borde, one of Henry VIII’s courtiers. He was a great land owner of the times with 29 other manor houses to his name and property in 69 parishes. As a leading physician of his day, the rather modest inception of the now famous Borde Hill Garden was as a home to medicinal species. In the main drawing room of the West Wing of the house is preserved a truly magnificent Elizabethan decorative plaster ceiling, complete with royal fleur de lys among other treasures from the period. Moving forward to 1720, having changed family ownership, Borde Hill House was extended considerably, still later with ensuing owners in 1840 and the 1890’s. Each extension was added with meticulous consideration so as the original character of the house remained unspoilt. The Stephenson Clarke family purchased the house in 1892 and built the East Wing, altered and restored the central southern bay windows & added the present porch to the north front door, the family’s fourth generation still resides there today (visitors are able to explore the history and splendour of the house by group pre-booking between May and June).

The Col. Stephenson Clarke commenced on a process of extending the acreage from only 8 acres to, 21,000 acres across 50 years! Creating in that time both the formal gardens and planting extensively in selected woodlands around the estate where varying microclimates were especially suitable for more tropical flora and fauna. The Col, being a great naturalist, gave equally important roles to botanical interest and garden design. Planting of the garden began in 1893 and then in 1898 he extended the South Lawn and created the Ha-Ha. Many expeditions were sponsored by the great plant collectors to China, Burma, Tasmania and the Andes. From these, numerous plants were gathered and placed in the best suited areas of the grounds at Borde Hill. Still today, collections of magnolias, camellias, and many unusual trees can be enjoyed. Some of these have grown to ‘champion’ size and Borde Hill contains 82; about 8,000 trees and shrubs are listed in the Tree Registry. Evolution of the Garden Borde Hill Garden was planted in a series of intimate outdoor ‘rooms’ which include the Azalea Ring (1912), Garden of Allah (1922) and sub-tropical Dells. Later were added Jay Robin’s Rose Garden, the Mediterranean and Italian Gardens. The Rose Garden, created in 1996, was planted with over 600 scented David Austin roses! Borde Hill Garden has received numerous awards. To celebrate this sesquicentennial anniversary, Head Gardener Andy Stevens will re-introduce a number of the original varieties established by the Col which have since been lost to harsh weather. What’s more, a unique exhibition of his life and explorations will be open to visitors throughout the year.

Growing Cauliflowers Article by Michael Dongray,

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Cauliflowers require a very fertile soil in a sunny spot and a high water requirement to grow well. Although not the easiest crop to grow providing the below requirements are met successful cauliflower growing is achievable.

Sowing the Seed Sow thinly in drills 13mm deep in a seed bed in rows 15cm apart. Cover the seed over with soil lightly firming with the head of a rake. Keep the seedbed moist. Always use a fine spray. The main sowing period is March to May, although early crops can be achieved by sowing under glass in January/February or sowing cultivars in the autumn in a glasshouse or cold frame. When the seedlings are about 25mm high they will need thinning to 75mm in the rows. This is to prevent overcrowding otherwise the seedlings become weak and spindly. The seedlings will be ready to plant out in their final position when they are 100 to 150mm high or when they have 5 to 6 true leaves. The bed must be watered thoroughly the day before moving them.

Preparing the Bed for final planting. Cauliflowers require a very fertile soil, and digging in a bucketful of well-rotted manure or organic matter before planting and raking in 150g per sq m of Growmore or other general purpose fertiliser, will help growth. Firm the soil by treading before planting. Space summer and autumn cropping types 60cm apart and winter varieties 75cm apart. Water well in dry weather, Once the plants have grown away add 30g per square metre of high nitrogen fertiliser such as sulphate of ammonia to boost growth and curd formation. Start cutting when the heads are firm; once the florets start to separate, it is too late.

Varieties. Clarify: Excellent resistance to clubroot. This variety gives excellent resistance to clubroot and its erect growth means it takes up less space in the veg patch. Clapton: With large white, heads, this is for summer to late autumn harvest. Club root resistant. Graffiti AGM: Has deep purple heads. Raleigh: Early cropping & very long harvest period.

Cauliflower problems Club root: Roots become swollen and distorted, leaves become pale and yellow and wilt easily. Plants may die. Control: Probably best to choose a club root resistant variety. Birds: Birds, especially pigeons, can strip the leaves of cauliflowers, preventing the plants from growing and the curds forming. Control: Protect the plants from birds by covering them with netting or fleece. Caterpillars: The larvae of several butterflies and moths feed on the leaves of brassicas, including cauliflowers, making holes in them. Control: Treat with synthetic pyrethroid insecticides or grow beneath insectproof mesh. Protect the curds of summer varieties from the sun by bending a few leaves over them.

Ranger’s Report

First Responders: Keeping their Fingers on the Pulse In October 2010 the South East Coast Ambulance Trust advertised in Crowborough for volunteers to become Community First Responders (CFR’s). At the time my husband and I had never heard of the scheme and we both looked to find out more. We found ourselves attending a preliminary meeting with Clive, a Paramedic, who explained more about the scheme whereby local volunteers help their own communities, by responding quickly to certain 999 calls in their area. By January 2012 there were 4 members trained and responding to calls in our area, anywhere within 15-20 minute drive of Crowborough. And since February 2012, 448 incidents have been attended to by Crowborough CFR’s. We currently have 5 active responders and another 5 people at various stages of training/application, but there is always room for more people to join us, especially from smaller villages outside Crowborough.

To all Local Young Photographers RSPB and British Wildlife Photography Awards 2013 Competition Aspiring young wildlife photographers are urged to get out their cameras and get snapping to be in with a chance of winning this year’s WildPix competition, led by RSPB and British Wildlife Photography Awards. Last year out of 4000 entries William Briggs from local village Groombridge won with his spectacular photo of a chaffinch taken in his own back garden. There are two age categories - under 12s and 12 to 18. Entries don’t need to feature exotic creatures or locations to be in with a chance of winning. The WildPix competition is a great way for young people to get close to the nature around them. Entries are open until 4th May and the winners will be announced in September. More information about the British Wildlife Photography Awards can be found at www.bwpawards.co.uk

Activities currently on offer include: Dance, Yoga, Craft, Singing and Skittles. For more information contact: 01892 662089 30 • March 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality.
