Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Hospices of Hope Graham Perolls OBE, Tunbridge Wells resident, is the founder & Executive Director of locally based, Hospices of Hope charity. Here is a Q&A with him about his charity and how it started:
How has it grown since then? We started in 1992 with just one nurse going out from our UK hospice to train the first Romanian hospice nurse. We also found a Romanian doctor who was willing to support us. From those small beginnings the charity has grown into the leading provider of hospice and palliative care in South East Europe, now employing more than 250 people in Romania, Serbia and the Republic of Moldova. Since the start, 25,000 patients have received hospice care and 17,000 health care professionals from across the region have attended training courses.
How did the idea of Hospices of Hope come about initially and what were the first steps to establishing the charity? I first went to Romania as a tourist in 1975, and during a visit to Brasov I made some lifelong friends, which led to a lasting interest in the country. My father died from cancer in 1980 at St Christopher’s Hospice in London, and the care they gave him inspired me to start a hospice charity in my home town of Dartford. I returned to Romania for a visit with my family in 1989, when things were probably at their worst. Later that year, the dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu, was shot dead and more than 40 years of communist oppression were brought to an end. I went back to visit my friends in the early days of 1990 and witnessed at first hand the terrible legacy of those years – thousands of abandoned children and terrible conditions in hospitals and other institutions. On visiting the cancer hospital in Brasov, I saw a young man dying in terrible pain and this planted a seed in my mind that perhaps I could use my experience of starting a hospice in Kent to help pioneer hospice care in Romania.
What are the current goals for the charity? We have just finished building a new hospice in Bucharest, capital of Romania. It took 6 years to raise the £4 million needed for the project and 60% of the funds were raised within Romania. However, even though the State contributes to the running costs, it will be a huge challenge to raise the funds needed to keep this and all the other services running. We are also now focussing on renovating a donated building that will become a centre for children with rare and life-limiting illnesses. This is a group that have been very much neglected in South East Europe.
What do you hope the future will bring? We look forward to a time when every patient in Romania and surrounding countries who needs hospice care will be able to receive it. At the moment, less than 6% have access to any kind of specialist service. This means that thousands of patients still die • April 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

in pain and family members are often traumatised by the experience. We are starting to have a closer working relationship with the governments of these countries and encouraging them to provide more resources for hospice and palliative care. However, funds are still very limited and they still need our help. 44% of Romanians still live in poverty according to World Health Organisation statistics.
What local help do you need? We have a lot of support from local people. I live in Tunbridge Wells, where one of our 20 charity shops is situated. We are always looking for volunteers to help in our shops and also to volunteer in Romania, where we run summer camps for bereaved and sick children. We obviously need donations to help meet our commitments to our partners in Romania, Serbia
and Moldova and every little makes a difference. Something Simple to Grow with the Kids this Spring (or by yourself!) How to grow a Sunflower
How to grow the Sunflowers
The first thing to remember is that Sunflowers like the sun and well-drained soil, so the best place to grow them is a place in the garden that gets the sun all day long.
1. Sunflowers can be sown straight into the ground where you want them to grow and flower, so make sure there is enough space for the flower to grow tall and the area is weed free. You can use the trowel to help you remove any weeds.
When to grow Sunflowers When you buy a packets of seeds remember to read the back of the packet to see when it is best to grow them, but any time from the end of March should be fine. They flower in the late summer months.
What you need
2. Rake the soil to a fine tilth (a fine crumbly texture) and make some small holes about 12mm deep. Leave about 10cm space between each seed. 3. Place a seed carefully in each hole and cover them up with soil.
• Your Sunflower seeds – remember to look how tall they will grow to make sure you allow enough space for the flower to grow really tall.
4. Alternatively, if you are planting your seeds in a plant pot put two seeds in the large plant pot about 12mm deep with 10cm between the seeds and cover them up with soil.
• A trowel
5. Water the seeds gently, keeping the soil moist.
• A small rake • A place in the garden to plant the seed or a large plant pot with compost. • Plant label and pen
6. As they grow, if the plants become crowded, thin them out to about 45cm apart leaving the strongest, tallest plants. 7. As your Sunflower begins to grow taller than you, it will need to help support the stem. You can do this by placing a long cane near the stem of each Sunflower then loosely tie the cane to the plant with string. 8. If your Sunflowers becomes really tall you will need the help of an adult to make a support big enough for the Sunflower. 9. Remember to water your Sunflowers as they grow keeping the soil moist. 10. Now all you need to do is watch your sunflower grow!! By EG in Bloom

Lynx in For years now there have been claims of sightings of large cats in Ashdown Forest. Now, however, the idea of re-introducing the lynx has been mooted by the Lynx UK Trust. If this goes ahead the lynx could soon be roaming on the Ashdown Forest. The lynx was forced out of the British Isles by man about 1300 years ago and the Lynx UK trust believes this feline has a definite place in our ecology and can fix problems caused by the lack of their presence. They believe, for instance, that the lynx resuming its rightful place on the food chain would mean they could help to control rapidly expanding deer populations. But to allay any worries you may have about the lynx, the trust states this: “the critical thing here is not what a lynx ‘could’ do, but what a lynx ‘would’ do; throughout recorded history, the 10,000 or so lynx across Europe, and the 30,000+ across Russia and Asia, have never attacked a human being; 12 • April 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living
child or adult. Once battered down to barely 700 cats in Europe by around 1940 (with hunting and habitat loss), ever since they have been expanding their population, and subject to reintroductions in countries like Germany, France and Switzerland; they are still no attacks on humans”. In March, the Lynx UK Trust launched a public consultation to gather opinions on the reintroduction of the lynx to the British Isles. To take part in the lynx survey, visit www.lynxuk.org.

Castle Library opens to visitors for first time! Wormwood Scrubs Prison after being convicted of the attempted murder of his girlfriend. Having been sentenced to life imprisonment in 1957, he was actually released in 1962 and was able to return to the castle after successful efforts by solicitor Ruth Eldridge to prove a miscarriage of justice. He continued to open the castle to visitors until his death in 1977, when he left the castle and his collections to the nation to enjoy. Under the guidance of a trust the castle became a fully accredited museum in 2013. Over 5000 books spanning from the 1600’s to the 20th Century will go on display at Chiddingstone Castle (just to the north of the Ashdown Forest area, near the small village of Chiddingstone) for the first time this April. The books have been specially cleaned and catalogued by volunteers throughout the Winter under the guide of a specially trained conservator and the library will become an additional exhibition room for visitors to enjoy.
books in leather covers with gold lettering. Most of the books are linked to the art collections and were used for research by the collector and late owner of the castle, Denys Eyre Bower. Many of the books are about Ancient Egypt, the Buddhist religion and art and Japanese history and arts. There are 600 books on Stuart History and 40 of these are Mary Queen of Scots biographies! Some of the books were bound by Denys who learnt how to do this while spending time at
There is also a first edition of Florence Nightingale’s “Notes on Nursing” in the library as Denys was very interested in her life because she lived in the village where Denys was born, Crich (Derbyshire). The castle’s beautiful grounds are open to visitors and include a grade II listed orangery, a rose garden, a lake and the new ‘Fields of Eternity’ Egyptian garden. For further information call: 01892 870347 or visit www. chiddingstonecastle.org.uk.
One of the most interesting books from the library is the ‘The Book of the Dead’, which is an Ancient Egyptian funerary text with magic spells that would help the deceased on their journey to the afterlife. This particular book has full colour facsimile illustrations and was published in 1899 by the Trustees of the British Museum. Due to their delicate nature, books displayed in the library can only be viewed by appointment. There are many beautifully bound 14 • April 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

FAVOURITE FAMILY RECIPES: MUMS HELPING MUMS Howe Family Risotto My family recipe has evolved from a dish we used to have when we went camping and only had a one ring gas burner, so it was a one pot and a BBQ dish!
Ingredients: 8 sausages 1 onion, finely chopped 1 clove of garlic 1 tin of baked beans 1 tin of tomatoes 1 mug of basmati rice 1 tsp whole grain mustard
Method: Cook the sausages under the grill or in the oven. In a large pan fry off the finely chopped onion and add garlic once softened. Add the tin of tomatoes to the pan and simmer. Now put the rice on to cook in a separate pan with a pinch of salt. Once the rice and sausages are nearly cooked add the baked beans and mustard to the tomato. Once the rice is cooked, drain it and add it to the tomato and beans and stir. Cut up the sausages and stir in, then serve. It sounds odd but it’s so good. And better still, I always seem to have the ingredients in my freezer and larder! By Becky Melvin
Mexican ‘Lasagne’ Mexican ‘Lasagne’ is a current fav in my house! Chilli layered with tortillas and grated cheese with no added salt for small people.
Ingredients: 500g minced beef 1 onion 1 pepper, de-seeded and chopped Small tin sweet corn Tin baked/kidney beans 2 cartons of passata Squirt of tomato purée 4 tortilla wraps Spices: black pepper, chilli powder, paprika to taste Grated cheddar cheese
Method: Preheat oven to about 200c. Dry fry mince and onions, add peppers and cook for about 5 minutes until onion is translucent and the peppers and mince are cooked. Add passata, tomato purée, sweet corn and beans, add spices to taste. Cook the chilli mixture for about 20 mins until the oven is hot. Then layer chilli mixture, then tortilla, then a handful of grated cheese, repeat for as many layers as you can fit in your dish! Finish with a last layer of cheese and pop in the oven for about 15-20 minutes and until browned and crunchy on the top. Serve with salad and coleslaw! Makes enough to serve 4 normal adults, and freezes fine if there are leftovers. The chilli ingredients can also be thrown in the slow cooker (minus the sweet corn and beans) in the morning, put on low all day, then when you’re home, add the beans and corn and leave while the oven is heating up, then just construct the layers and put in the oven. Q&A with Debbie Johnson who operates the Wildlife A&E of this area.
How did the Wildlife A&E get started in the first place? I have always had a love for animals and wildlife since I was small; helping birds and mice the cat caught and nursing them back to health, but it was when my daughter began working at the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield that my involvement in animal rescue really gathered pace. Members of the public would bring all manner of sick and injured wild animals into the centre; not knowing what else to do with them. The centre didn’t have facilities to deal with these animals, so as my daughter Samantha was the head keeper there at the time, she used to bring everything that needed help home to me. Her thinking was that, as I am a trained ‘human’ nurse, I would know what to do! I loved the challenge and it was no different to dealing with humans really; only the patients were usually much cuter! The only problem was that the animals couldn’t tell you what hurt or explain their symptoms. I used to end up taking orphans to work with me, as they needed feeds round the clock. Thankfully, I had very understanding, animal-loving bosses. In fact they used to lend a hand too. In 2009 we moved from Lingfield to Rotherfield to a larger house with a bigger garden. Then within a year, the children all left home and we were left with space! It was then that I decided to make it official and the Wildlife 24 • April 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living
A&E was born. Pens were put up in the garden, the conservatory was cleared, I bought a larger car to fit all the cages and bedding in and we were up and running. If you can think of an animal native to Britain, from owls to grebes, from swans to hawks and from hares to badgers; you name it we have looked after it. What role has your family had in the group? I have a very understanding and supportive husband who thankfully shares my passion for wildlife. David is never surprised to come home from work to find a cygnet/duckling in the bath or a hedgehog in the conservatory. He runs his own company but helps with the feeds and fundraising and mucks in whenever he can. My daughter, Louise who lives in East Grinstead, also helps; often looking after the animals in her home, collecting animals for me and she also does a lot of the fundraisers for us. Samantha, who now lives in Yorkshire, helps out when she is home, including house sitting for us so we get a holiday occasionally. What is the hardest part of running the A&E? The hardest part is a difficult one. There are those times where I have been up for nights on end with

a young fawn, trying to get it to feed, then once it is feeding well and putting on weight, doing all the right things and three weeks later suddenly dies. It’s heart breaking and has happened to me 3 years on the trot on my birthday! These were Roe deer which are very difficult to raise. The other problem is trying to understand what has happened to them before we get them. Of the three babies who passed away the first (we found out later), had been fed sugar beet, the second had an intestinal obstruction and the third had been attacked by a dog or dogs and never got over the shock. The other hard thing is trying to find food for the deer, who are with us for a year if they come in as orphans, and once they are weaned they have to be fed natural food they would find in the wild which means us going out to collect fresh browse every day. Depending on how many we have in our enclosures at the time, it can be a trailer load a day. Once that dies off we are stuck and have to feed vegetables/bread and hard feed, which gets expensive. The whole process is very time consuming as well. We are at the ‘scratching around for feed’ phase right now, so I am begging borrowing but not stealing everything I can get to feed them. What is the highlight of running the Wildlife A&E? The highlight for me is seeing any animal that has come in really sick or injured or orphaned, running/ flying off into the distance after they have been restored to health and can be released. Sometimes they look back to say thank you but not often! Nonetheless, it is always a very special moment. What support have you had from the local community? We had a lot of help from the community in Lingfield when we lived and I worked in the area. I worked at the local doctors surgery and all the patients would bring in donations of newspapers, cat food, dog food and blankets on a regular basis. Fundraisers that we do are always well attended especially our Quiz 26 • April 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living
Nights which we hold bi-annually at the British Wildlife Centre who donate their reception area to us for the evening. I should mention a great deal of thanks to them for their help. We have invitations to a lot of the summer fetes in the area to hold a stall and I am invited to deliver talks to evening/afternoon groups, schools and brownie/scout groups. The Cat Protection League have loaned us a piece of their land for a deer release pen. We could not be more grateful to them for their support. What support would you like from the local community? As we are finding it difficult to feed the deer, we would be grateful for any vegetables, bread or fruit that has gone out of date or is surplus to requirements. We are always in need of cat/dog food, newspapers, bird food and blankets. We have an amazon gift list which is very well supported. I think it is great that people who want to help can buy something from that list and know that it will go directly to help the animals. I also think people are happy to support us because everything we do is voluntary, we don’t charge any admin or wages to Wildlife A&E, so every penny raised is spent directly on the treatment or feeding of the animals in our care at any given time. If there are any groups who would like to come and talk to them about our work, we are very happy to do so; we don’t charge we just ask for donations. Business Profile: Paul Nash, Allzones How did you originally get into the roofing business? Having been in the building industry since the early 1970’s we were requested to carry out some roof work about 28 years ago now. Initially I hired in professional roofers and received on the job training from them as an expansion of my own building business. During our years in roofing we’ve had additional training and product briefings as we’ve gone along both through manufacturers themselves and by using experts in certain areas that I’ve been fortunate enough to train under. What do you most pride yourself on in the service you offer? We always aim for a quality, cost-effective job. For instance, sometimes clients ask for repairs to be made to fix a leak but if this won’t actually solve their problem (i.e. the leak would come back and worse), then we won’t touch the job. And we don’t take on any work if we can’t deliver what the customers wants and more importantly needs, as otherwise we are not giving value for money. Why do your clients choose you? Good references, which include actual jobs that they can visit and see the quality of the workmanship and the finished result.

What is the highlight of your profession? The satisfaction of seeing a roof completed that is going to last for a lifetime, meeting new people of which some become friends. And of course roofers are always able to get good tans in the Summertime! What guarantees do you give to customers? We have insurance backed guarantees on tiled/slate roofing which means if we ever went out of business the insurance company would cover us, this would also include any woodworm treatment in the loft required. And on flat roofs we give a company guarantee of 15 years. Testimonial: Tobias School of Art & Therapy have used Allzones Roofing for both replacement and repaired roofs for many years. Their work is always to a high standard, good value and completed to time and price. The written contract with them is short and clear, and anything not included in the price is discussed and agreed. The site is kept neat and tidy (important for us when we have residents and students here). And they take pride in their work, which shows. For more information call Paul Nash on 07851 421104 or 01342 315250 See advert on page 3.

‘Bloom’ ing Excitement! Be prepared for a burst of colour and blossom fever with the first ever tulip festival at local National Trust property Standen. Move over Holland, as from Monday 13th April to Sunday 10th May, over 8000 tulips will be on show around the gardens! Senior gardener Nick Delves, who curated this year’s tulip display, explains what the festival has to offer: “Tulip time at Standen is always pretty spectacular, but this year we’ve planted more tulips than ever before. There will be 28 different varieties on show, including a good mix of vintage and modern. Visitors will get to see many different forms of tulip aside from the popular single flower blooms; we’ve got double blooms, lily-flowering ones even a few Darwin hybrids in there.” They’ll also be a range of tulip-themed events to tie in with the festival. This is the most ambitious garden display ever put on by Standen, and represents the growing importance of the garden as a heritage attraction in its own right. A range of tulip events are programmed to coincide with the festival, including:
Tuliptastic: Tour & Flower Arranging Workshop Saturday 25th Apr, 4.30pm - 6.30pm A guided tour of the vibrant tulip display with senior gardener Nick Delves, followed by a flower arranging workshop in the Barn Café. £25 per person (includes all materials).
Tulip Photography Workshops Tuesday 28th Apr & Thursday 14th May, 8am - 10.30am Photography masterclass from expert Roger Bloxham, with bacon butties in the Barn Café. £15 per person.
Tulip Garden Tour Sunday 10th May, 8am - 10.30am Guided tour of our 8000 tulips in bloom, with sparkling wine and light breakfast. £15 per person. The festival is part of a major five-year revival of Standen, which aims to restore the Arts and Crafts-inspired gardens to their early 20th century heyday by 2017. Standen’s first owner, Margaret Beale, kept a garden diary which records the thousands of tulips she planted over the years. For further information visit www. nationaltrust.org.uk/standen.
Business Profile: Elisabeth Eckersley, Easy German Learning How long have you been tutoring German? I have been teaching and tutoring German here in England for 23 years with great enthusiasm to students of all ability levels and ages ranging from two and a half years up to 87 years. What’s the easiest aspect of what you do? Easy German Learning has been carefully chosen as my business name because that’s exactly what I go for. Over the years I have developed simple, fun and practical ways of teaching German so even A-level students say, “In these two hours with you I have learnt more than in my seven years of learning German at school.” What do you most enjoy about what you do? I very much enjoy the creativity of this job. Be it in tutoring little ones, exam students or adults (privately in businesses or in classes at Central Sussex College) or having a great mix of levels in our monthly fun packed conversational workshops with Kaffee und Kuchen. I gear the teaching to each individual in order to release their potential. 30 • April 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

Mothers’ quote The relationship between parents and children, but especially between mothers and daughters, is tremendously powerful, scarcely to be comprehended in any rational way. Joyce Carol Oates
Spring Activity: Kids can build a nest for birds It’s the time of year that many birds build their nests. A challenge to help local wildlife: build a nest that could hold birds eggs, and withstand the wind. Take a visit down to Ashdown Forest and look for materials that you could use: dried grasses, twigs, sticks, lichen, mud, etc. you can even use some wool. Next find a low fork in a tree in your garden or park and build your nest.
When finished, test the nest by putting small stones, cones or other objects that could be your ‘eggs’ to test for strength. Also give the branches a tiny shake to ensure the nest would stand up to the wind. Keep an eye on your nest over Spring and with a bit of luck it will provide a lovely home for a family of birds.

Gardening in Spring at the nursery we know just the spot where it will go! Well this year I’m actually going to do it - replant the front garden - the dark winter days were spent planning, plants and shrubs chosen and then dismissed, new ones included, I think I’m almost there with the planning . Every opportunity I’m out in the garden digging up, moving, imagining, it is very exciting.
Spring is so full of promise and at last you see the rewards of all your Autumn planting efforts. The clumps of daffodils that adorn our verges cannot fail to bring sunshine and a smile to the gloomiest of days. By the time you are reading this we will have said ‘au revoir’ to the snowdrops and crocus and a big hello to the majestic blooms of Magnolia soulangea and M. Grandiflora or the delicate petals of M. Stellata. These are the more common white/pink/purple variety but have you considered the beautiful yellow magnolias? M. Daphne presents rich dark yellow petals often at the same time as its leaves and is perfect for a smaller garden, by contrast as a specimen in a larger garden M. Yellow Bird will not disappoint.
and at the time I chose various shrubs and trees that I really liked at the time… but now I’m fed up with them! Some have got too big for the garden and look out of place, others have been shoehorned in over the years and some of the colours don’t really work together – we all do it, tempted by the gorgeous plants
There will be some plants and shrubs that I’ll miss but to enjoy these I can visit other gardens. I’ll treat myself to new colours and specimens and yes of course there will be the odd mistake, but isn’t that part of the joy of gardening? Interior design: A self-made Journey It’s Springtime and so it’s the time of the year that many of us look to make a fresh start in a new home or refresh our own homes. Moving is a daunting prospect especially if you look around and see an abundance of accumulated belongings, or consider the prospect of going through the stuff in the garage or loft that you haven’t looked at since the last time you moved. There are some simple things that you can do to improve the appearance and saleability of your home.
Tidy up! This might seem obvious, but maintaining a tidy home can be difficult especially if you have children or animals. If your home is full of toys, get some good storage boxes that can be stacked and encourage the kids to pack their things away.
Clean! This costs nothing, but even an out-dated avocado bathroom looks better if it is clean. Close toilet lids and wash pedestal mats. The mould around the bath needs to go and replace the shower curtain. Keep kitchens free from dirty dishes. Don’t mask nasty smells with air freshener, find the problem and eradicate the cause. Ask a friend what your house smells like – get them to be honest!
Start packing You will have to pack things anyway, so make a start. Be ruthless. If you haven’t needed something since you last moved, give it to charity or sell it. Removal companies may lend you boxes. That collection of china dolls needs to go and you can live without
them for a few months until they take pride of place in your new home.
De-personalise Family photos and mementos have their place in moderation, but remember you need your buyers to imagine themselves in your house, not enjoy how YOU live there.
Take a good look around By leaving tatty wallpaper or frayed carpets you are restricting your buyers to those who can’t see past it. Not everyone can visualise the changes that might be needed to update your home into something special, so it is up to you to maximise the pool of potential buyers by appealing to as many people as possible, not just those with an eye for decoration or design. Buyers often over-estimate what it costs to replace carpet or redecorate, so reduce the figure in their head by doing minor repairs. Fix loose cupboard doors and replace missing handles.
Don’t neglect the outside If you have outside space make sure it is tidy, the lawn is trimmed, weeds are removed, jetwash and clean the moss from patios and decking. You don’t have to spend a huge amount to tidy and clean your house but be prepared to put the time in, it will make all the difference. Of course some of these points can be useful even if you’re not intending to move! By Melanie Laidler of ODD Interior Design. See www.oddonline.co.uk or call: 01342 604578 or 07771 570 495
