Flat roofing
Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Hartfield House Hartfield born, Michael Wilford, CBE, is one of Britian’s most acclaimed living architects. His work alongside James Stirling throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s included some of the most important postwar buildings of the 20th century. Perhaps the most notable of these are their designs for an extension to the Tate Gallery in London and for the National Gallery in Stuttgart, Germany. Following Stirling’s death in 1992, Wilford formed Michael Wilford and Associates whose work includes The Lowry in Salford and the British Embassy in Berlin. The home he personally designed and had built for his own family in the heart of Ashdown Forest has recently come onto the market so we thought it was an apt moment to highlight the man and his work, especially considering his ties with the local area.
The house was published in ‘One Hundred Houses for One Hundred European Architects of the Twentieth Century’ alongside many of the key houses of this period. In the book, the writer Eberhard Syring describes the house as “reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie House’” and outlines elements that he defines as “deconstructivist” in parts and “classical modern” in others:
This truly remarkable property named Hartfield House resides in a secluded and private position in the Ashdown Forest and comprises a substantial country house (over 4,300 sq ft) as well as a studio and summerhouse on the grounds.
“The very rustic exterior wall of the base consists of sandstone blocks. The windows (on this part) are small and deeply inlaid. The upper floor, constructed from wood with ample panes of glass, offers a striking contrast”.
The property is reached via a long, private driveway that leads through the beautiful and ancient Ashdown Forest. The house is surrounded by gardens and sits at the rear of the site. The tranquil setting was formerly the site of an historic hall that fell into ruins, allowing the current property to be built in 2000.

Mum’s quote
Some ideas to keep the kids busy this holiday 1. Make a book. Buy some scrapbooks and get the kids to write and draw pictures with a theme. 2. Go to the local library and have the kids sign up to the reading challenge.
My mum was never too keen on TV, so we kids all went to the library and got books out. Right from the start, I loved the works of Mark Twain. Every time I read about Tom Sawyer, I’d go out and do something lowlevel naughty, just like him.

3. Have a family quiz - make sure there’s a small prize to get everyone into the competitive spirit. 4. Make alphabet pebbles. 5. Allow them to make mudpies or mud concoctions.

The Wild Carrot
hinting to its key identification characteristics. The flowers are arranged in a compound umbel, meaning the flower stems all originate at the same point, like an umbrella. Then at the end of each of the flower stems there is another even smaller umbrella of stems, hence the “compound umbrella” or “compound umbel”. But a word of warning here! The Apiaceae family is home to two of the most deadly poisonous species of plants in the UK. Namely, Hemlock and Hemlock Water Dropwort. Therefore NEVER consume any species of this family unless you are 100% positive of its identification. Wild carrot is also known as Queen Anne’s Lace or Birds Nest Weed due to two aspects of the compound umbel. Firstly it derives the name of Queen Anne’s lace due to one tiny purplish floret in the centre of the white florets. The association is with Queen Anne of England (1655-1714) who, it is said, pricked her finger while making a lace collar, staining the lace with blood.
More often than not, the plants we forage can be compared to farmed or home-grown vegetables and herbs while being really quite different all together. Having their own unique flavour, medicinal and nutritional values. But every once in a while we come across a wild version of a common vegetable, and this article is about one such plant.
Botanists on the other hand believe the plant is using mimicry to encourage pollinators. The red dot said to mimic an insect and so enticing others in.
Finding the wild carrot, Daucus carota is like stepping back in history, a virtual time travel if you will. It is almost unchanged from its historical predecessors.
The other name of ‘Birds nest weed’ is due to the shape of the umbel once it goes to seed. The whole umbel closes up on itself taking the cup-like shape of a small nest.
Although fossil pollen samples from the Apiaceae (Carrot) family have been dated to between 35 – 55 million years ago. The origins of the humble carrot stretch back about 5000 years to the area now known as Afghanistan, from where it slowly spread even as far down as the Mediterranean. Although the orange carrot we know today was developed from the wild species in about the 16th Century, discoveries of seeds in ancient archeological sites have shown that carrots were used in England during the Iron age and in Switzerland during the Neolithic and Bronze ages. This shows that ancient man had already discovered the culinary and most probably the medicinal uses of both the seeds and the roots of wild carrot. There is little evidence to suggest that they were cultivating the plant during these periods though.
Other than a wonderful vegetable, the wild carrot has been used as an effective herbal medicine throughout history.
So moving forward to modern day, what do we now know about this plant? As previously mentioned it’s a member of the Apiaceae family, formerly known as the Umbelliferae family. The former name

It is known as an aromatic herb that acts as a diuretic, soothes the digestive tract and stimulates the uterus. It has been found to support the liver and due to its diuretic nature it stimulates the flow of urine and the removal of waste by the kidneys.
version. The young roots are tender and can be quite sweet, whilst the older roots are quite woody. While the younger roots can be eaten raw are gently cooked the older roots can be used when making stock and discarded. The seeds have an amazing flavour, like a cross between carrot and caraway. They have been used historically to flavour beers and give a unique flavour to desserts and fruit coulis. I have used them in the past as one of my many wild ingredients for a spice mix for curing mackerel.
An infusion made with the leaves of the plant has been used in the treatment cystitis and kidney stone formation, and even to reduce stones that have already formed. Carrot leaves increase levels of sex hormones as they contain significant amounts of porphyrins, a pituitary gland stimulant.
Although related to the cultivated carrot, the Wild carrot seems to offer so many more culinary and medicinal opportunities, and the best thing is it’s abundant, sustainable and local.
The whole plant is medicinal from the flowers (an infusion used in the treatment of diabetes), to the seeds (treatment of oedema, flatulents, indigestion and menstrual issues) to the root (which is used used to treat delayed menstruation).
NB: Remember to always consult an expert when foraging and self medicating. Always ID plants 100% before consuming and seek a professionals advice. Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide and diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.
As with all herbal medicine, care must be taken when pregnant, this is especially with relevant with Wild carrot. The root of the wild plant can induce uterine contractions and the seed was used as a traditional ‘morning after’ contraceptive. Unlike the supermarket bought carrots, the root of the Wild carrot is not the only part of the plant that I use. The flavour of the Wild carrot is intensely “carroty” and so the leaves make a great addition to salads. Or they can be used as a garnish on dishes giving a carroty herby flavour. The root of the Wild carrot is white in comparison to the cultivated

Scotney Castle Scotney Castle is an English country house, south of Tunbridge Wells and to the East of Ashdown Forest. The earliest recorded owner of the estate (in 1137) was Lambert de Scoteni who evidentally lent his name to the castle (the building of which commenced long after his death) and most likely gave his name to the nearby village of Lamberhurst as well! Some time later, in the 14th Century the French were raiding the Sussex and Kent coast, causing widespread damage and panic across the counties. Roger de Ashburnham who was Conservator of the Peace in Kent and Sussex, decided to build a castle to guard against this omnipresent threat. He chose the estate in which Scotney Castle now resides as it was on the River Bewl, at the bottom of a wooded valley and work commenced in 1378. Further, he built this quadrangular castle on a pair of islands which had the important advantage of being surrounded by a wide moat. It appears to be a fortress but it is really a roughly rectangular fortified house with towers in each corner. The original plan may never have been fully finished, and by 1558 only the southern tower was recorded as remaining. Evidence found in the will of a member of the Darell family (who owned the estate) gives precise information of the accommodation arrangements, and suggests that at that time only the south tower survived, an arched entrance
to the western tower still exists so this must have also been completed, or at least to some extent. The moat also encloses a outer courtyard and the stumpy remains of a ruined gatehouse. In 1580 the south wing was rebuilt in Elizabethan architecture style by the Darrell family: part stone, part brick with projecting timber-framed. This building also contained a fine wooden staircase and several well concealed priest holes. Thomas Darrell

and his family were Catholics at a time when Catholicism was illegal in this country. For seven years between 1591-1598 he harboured the famous Jesuit priest, Father Richard Blount, in a secret chamber inside. His location was eventually betrayed to the authorities. The buliding was later raided twice. On the first attempt it took a week and was only concluded when Blount’s companion gave himself up. On the second occasion it took a further ten days, but again they

during the 1970s and 1980s, it served as a weekend escape to her political life. The whole estate stretches to 770 acres with trails through woodland and the hillside gardens. There are also fabulous views across the valley. Certainly well worth a visit this summer. Collection

and the hollow created was developed into a quarry garden and contains a 100-million-yearold impression of a dinosaur’s footprint!
In1630, an east range was built by William Darrell, it is thought to a design by Inigo Jones. It was a substantial three-storied structure which dwarfed the remaining Elizabethan and medieval structures, the ruins of which can still be seen in part today. At that time Darrell had most of the medieval castle pulled down and connected his new house to the one surviving tower. The manor later followed the same route to decay as the medieval castle, and together they now form the centrepiece of a magnificent hillside garden. However the original Elizabethan wing and tower remained intact as a Bailiff’s dwelling until 1905.
A wealth of trees were planted by Hussey: masses of azaleas and rhodedendrons, with Scotney becoming a blaze of colour in early summer. His descendent, Christopher Hussey, left the estate to the National Trust. Incidentally Margaret Thatcher had an office in the mansion, renting the Belfry flat for a time
With over 10,000 objects, the collection at Scotney Castle is the largest National Trust collection in the South East. There is the large library of the Hussey family, assembled since the seventeenth century, but principally by Edward Hussey III (1807-94) and his grandson, the architectural historian Christopher Hussey (1899-1970). Includes a large stock of Victorian books, Christopher Hussey’s working collection of books on art, architecture and art history, and a small collection of early guidebooks and similar material assembled by him. The collection of furntiure, ceramics and decorative objects is displayed as it was left by Betty Hussey in 2006.
The estate remained in the Darrell family for some 350 years. Then in 1778 Edward Hussey bought the estate and his grandson, also an Edward, built the new, separate castle to the designs of Anthony Salvin starting in 1837 and completing in 1843. Sandstone quarried from the slope below

Keep BEElieving in the Honeybee The East Grinstead Beekeeping Association is one of a couple of beekeeping associations in the Ashdown Forest area. Here chairman Oliver Sinclair provides a fabulous Q&A about local beekeeping and just how we can help our honey bees: What are the association’s objectives? We are a small group of enthusiastic hobbyist beekeepers based in this area. Our aims are to promote and increase the local community’s understanding of helping honey bees and beekeeping by means of teaching adults and children through demonstrations at local shows and clubs. We also seek to train our members to become better informed beekeepers and try to provide education and support to people who might be interested in bees yet do not have the time or inclination to keep bees themselves. What are the biggest challenges of beekeeping? Some of the last few years have been the most challenging in living memory for honeybees – due to a combination of diseases, changes of land use and poor weather. This is not great
news for anyone, as a majority of food we eat relies on pollination by honeybees and other insects. Looking to the future this vital insect species will remain under threat as the climate changes, urban sprawl continues and other diseases threaten to hit our shores, meaning beekeeping will be of even more importance to the UK economy and our local environment.
us or another nearby beekeeping association: swarming is a natural process when colonies seek to increase their numbers. If you see a swarm contact our Swarm Co-ordinator who will collect it. Honeybees in a swarm are usually very gentle and present very little danger. Before calling up we recommend looking at our swarm page as we get a lot of calls about bumblebees and wasps.
What is the highlight of keeping honeybees?
By planting your garden with bee friendly plants: in areas of the country where there are few agricultural crops, honeybees rely upon garden flowers to ensure they have a diverse diet. You can encourage honeybees to visit your garden by planting single flowering plants and vegetables (e.g. runner beans, sweet peas, etc.). Bees like daisy-shaped flowers: asters and sunflowers, and herbaceous perennials in particular. Bees need a lot of pollen and trees are a good source of food. Willows, lime and fruit trees are exceptionally good, as are blackberries, so please resist cutting back brambles in your garden! Even mowing your lawn less frequently can help by
Beekeeping is an amazingly fun hobby that involves constant wonder as you learn more about one of the most fascinating and impressive creatures on earth. You get to meet lots of likeminded people and contrary to popular belief you don’t need lots of outdoor space to keep bees. In fact many landowners and local residents will jump at the chance of hosting an apiary for nothing or at most a few jars of honey. How can we support the bees even if we are not beekeepers ourselves? By reporting honeybee swarms to

allowing dandelions to grow - a perfect excuse to leave the lawn mower in the shed. Typical expensive British summer bedding plants sadly provide no nectar and pollen and are best avoided if you want to help honeybees.
government coffers! Even the Defra minister, Lord Rooker, who holds the purse strings to finance this, has said that without this extra research we could lose our honeybees within ten years.... So please if possible, write to your MP in support of the bee health research funding campaign.
Buying local honey helps beekeepers cover the costs of beekeeping. It is not mistreated to give it a long shelf life and tastes quite different to foreign supermarket honey. The flavour reflects local flora and can help alleviate hay fever. We find many people who say they don’t like honey, love local honey when they try it as invariably they have only ever tried the bland blended foreign honey sold in supermarkets. If you’d like to buy some local honey contact Oliver Sinclair on: chair@egbka.org.uk.
What are the benefits being a member of a beekeeping association and how do I become a member? Membership has many benefits, including help and advice on starting up and also giving you the chance to handle bees before you spend any money. For the new beekeeper, this can be invaluable. More importantly you will get to meet lots of other local, friendly beekeepers and can receive help from when needed.
Finally by asking your MP to improve research into honey bee health: there is not enough information to combat the diseases that currently affect honeybees. Pollination by honeybees contributes £165m annually to the agricultural economy, yet the government only spends £200,000 annually on honeybee research. Beekeepers have costed a five-year, £8m programme to secure the information to save our bees, incidentally during which time pollination will contribute more than £800m to the

Conquering the Impossible Forest Row resident, Allan Curtis, who works at the Queen Vic Hospital was awarded a special ‘Ebola Medal’ last month by the Prime Minister for his work nursing Ebola patients in Sierra Leone earlier on this year. He was sent out to the West African country as a part of a group of NHS volunteer staff. As well as being a qualified nurse, Allan is also a paediatric teacher, teaching clinical practice to less experienced nurses.
team had to leave. Needless to say, quite a lot of teaching thus went on. On a light, non-political note, on the day of his award Allan was asked by the Prime Minister David Cameron what feedback he had for the NHS from his experience in West Africa to which Allan responded that not having to spend 20% of his time filling in paperwork (none of which was needed over there) meant he had that much more time to give to patients. This sentiment was then echoed back to him with David Cameron’s speech to the awardees later.
Allan explains it was challenging to try to marshal all the knowledge he had to help in a situation for which he had no actual experience, working with people from many countries. In fact nobody had any experience of Ebola and all clinicians had come together to try to avert the crisis. They had to work in special suits, in extremely hot weather and could only work an hour at a time, which made it even harder. When the mortality rates improved, Allan explains he was able to pass on his clinical skills to locals so they could carry on the work when the international

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Ashdown Forest’s Pooh & the Bees Illustrations by Mark Burgess after E H Shepard. © Disney 2015
So to help families understand the part they can play, the new guide includes a brand new short story and ten simple activities to support British honey bees - all featuring Winnie-the-Pooh and friends in various parts of England, lovingly drawn by illustrator Mark Burgess, who coloured the original E.H Shepherd black & white art and the latest book ‘Return to the Hundred Acre Wood’. Interestingly, the consumer research leading up to this guide provided an insight into the next generation’s views about care of the environment. Over four out of five (83%) British children aged 5-10 believe it is important to look after our environment. However less than a quarter (22%) of children are aware of any steps they could take in order to help Ashdown Forest’s favourite fictional son, Winnie-thePooh, likes nothing more than a lovely pot of honey to tuck into. So it seems only fitting that a new campaign to help save the honey bee has recently been launched in ‘partnership’ with our favourite bear. Egmont Publishing (the publisher of the classic Winnie-the-Pooh stories) aims to help Britain’s honey bee population. The famous Pooh characters feature in a newly released ‘bee-friendly’ guide that highlights simple, fun activities for families to do together over the summer in the great outdoors to help the honeybees. It is available in print as part of the BBKA’s (British Beekeepers Association) ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ member pack, or free to download from www.friendsofthehoneybee.com. The BBKA annual study surveyed 900 British beekeepers selected at random and sadly colony losses are continuing to decline. save the honey bees – although three quarters (76%) would like to help if they were told the honey bee was struggling to survive. David Aston, President of The British Beekeepers Association says: “While many people are aware of the plight of the honey bee, there are many that don’t know what they can do to help. We hope that by supporting our ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ initiative with the brand new guide inspired by Winnie-the-Pooh, families across the country can get involved, making a practical contribution and supporting bee health research.”

The Month of August August was named in honor of Augustus Caesar. It has 31 days because Augustus wanted as many days as Julius Caesar’s month of July had! Previously names Sextilis in Latin, it was the sixth month of the Roman calendar. Incidentally, they took that extra day from February! The Anglo-Saxons called it Weod monath, which means Weed month, because it is the month when weeds and other plants grow rapidly.
Participants come from a wide area and demonstrate the amazing talent to be found here in Sussex, and especially this area. Just a few of the many events being put on: •
Little Women by the Barefoot Players.
•
The Alex Wilson Memorial Exhibition.
•
Children’s interior design workshop.
•
Straight from the Brighton Fringe Katie Sommers and her team performing the Old Man of Orford.
•
Fitsteps free workshop.
•
The Drum Coach Festival workshops and performances.
•
Robin Hood by the Lindfield Promenade Plays.
1st August is Lammas Day coming from the Anglo-Saxon Hlafmaesse which means Loaf Mass, it used to be harvest time in Britain. This day marked the beginning of the harvest and predates the Christian harvest festival. Folk lore tells that if the first week of August is hot then winter will be white and long... Time will tell!

Baked stuffed vegetables Ingredients: 150g wholegrain brown rice 2 tsp vegetable oil 1 large onion chopped 2 celery sticks finely sliced 2 garlic cloves crushed 2 handfuls mushrooms (cup or button) sliced 1 courgette chopped 1 tsp dried Italian mixed herbs 4 large tomatoes halved 4 peppers, any colour halved and deseeded 1 pinch ground black pepper 40g reduced fat hard cheese finely grated
What to do:
5. Slice the tops from the tomatoes and scoop out the seeds. Arrange them in a roasting tin with the pepperhalves. Fill with the rice mixture and sprinkle with the cheese. Pop the tops back onto the tomatoes, then bake for about 20-25 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.
1. Put the rice on to cook in plenty of gently boiling water. It will take 30-35 minutes to cook. 2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and cook the onion, celery, garlic, mushrooms and courgette for about 8-10 minutes, until soft. Set aside.
Tip 1: Try aubergines as an alternative to peppers and tomatoes, scooping out some of the flesh. Tip 2: If there’s too much rice mixture, just keep it to one side to serve with the vegetables when they are cooked.
3. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 5, 190°C, fan oven 170°C. 4. Drain the rice and mix with the cooked vegetables and herbs. Season with black pepper.
Tip 3: Add a few fresh basil leaves for an aromatic garnish.
Raspberry toasted oat treat Ingredients:
and taking care that they don’t burn. Cool.
60g porridge oats 120g lower fat soft cheese 120g low-fat natural yoghurt 1 tbsp caster sugar ½ tsp vanilla extract 300g frozen raspberries thawed (fresh are even better)
2. Beat the soft cheese in a mixing bowl until smooth, then mix in the yoghurt, sugar and vanilla extract. Stir in the cooled oats. 3. Put half the raspberries into the base of four serving glasses, reserving a few for decoration. Crush the rest of the raspberries with a fork, then stir them through the soft cheese mixture to give a pretty swirled effect. Spoon into the glasses and chill until ready to serve, decorated with the reserved raspberries.
What to do: 1. Preheat the grill. Sprinkle the porridge oats onto a baking sheet and toast them lightly, turning once

Celebrate Conan Doyle Month at Groombridge Place with the owners Louisa and Eliza Saint. He claims to have met a ghost here, and was the first person to describe our resident ghost ‘The Ostler’. In 1995 Conan-Doyle’s love of Groombridge Place was commemorated by a small Museum room on site. His daughter Dame Jean Conan Doyle officially opened the building, and spoke of how her father felt that Groombridge Place was ‘the very essence of England’.
Groombridge Place will be celebrating its connections with the famous writer and creator of Sherlock Holmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A special programme of fascinating tours, talks and performances will take place throughout September.
The Museum has recently been re-dedicated The Conan Doyle Theatre and it is currently being considered by The Guinness Book of Records as the smallest working theatre in the country. A new play has been developed to commemorate our links with Conan Doyle, and it will be the first performance to be staged in the space.
Conan Doyle was a Crowborough resident and was friends with the owners of Groombridge Place during the early 1900s. He visited the house frequently as a guest and used it as inspiration for his popular full-length Holmes novel ‘The Valley of Fear’ in 1914. The house is meticulously and beautifully described by Doyle- who sets a brutal murder here in the first part of the story. Conan Doyle was interested in the supernatural, and often came to Groombridge Place to take part in séances
