“Mr Nash carried out a series of works projects that included roof tile and guttering replacement; application of hanging tiles to the rear of the property and groundworks/erection of a shed and patio area in the rear garden. “The works were finished to schedule, for reasonable fees and to a good standard. I was very pleased with the results. Throughout the contract, Mr. Nash and his colleagues behaved with care and consideration for both myself and my neighbours and were extremely professional in their conduct. “As a shareholder and director of a business for 10 years that was highly customer focused, I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Nash for future projects. I found him to be organised, methodical and communicative about the progress of works with both the client and his staff and he managed the projects in a most professional manner, to budget and to time.” — Dr. C Scott

HERE COMES THE HERD!

© Sam Jones The Hospice in the Weald Herd is a group of 24 life-size horse sculptures that are currently on show as a unique public art installation, surprising and delighting sightseers across West Kent and East Sussex. Designed and painted by local artists and generously sponsored by local businesses, the stunning horses have already created a stampede of interest in the parks and other public spaces where they are on display, ranging through Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, etc. To help to track them down and find the nearest to you, you can download a Herd Trek map from © Sam Jones

© Sam Jones the website herdofthehospice. co.uk, with locations of all 24. Some people are making the horse-spotting into a fun local day out, taking in the sights at the same time.

@thehospiceherd or facebook herdofthehospice. At the horse’s feet, you’ll find a panel which, along with other information, will tell you how to make a donation as part of the campaign.

As well as photos, the site includes details of all the artists. You can even buy special Herd of the Hospice merchandise from the special Herd shop which the hospice just opened in Victoria Place, Tunbridge Wells.

The herd will stay on show until October when they'll be brought together for an exhibition at Victoria Place, before an auction in which anyone can bid to take one home for heeps (sic).

When you track down each horse, you could encourage others to join in the fun by taking a selfie and sharing it with the hashtag #jointheherd, on twitter

Forever-a-Foraging John Wright is a well-known forager from his appearances with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall on Channel 4's series 'River Cottage'. John also authored four River Cottage Handbooks, No. 1. Mushrooms, No. 5. Edible Seashore, No. 7. Hedgerow, and No. 12, unashamedly called “Booze“ (which indulges his passion for home brewing). John runs seashore and mushroom forays across the south and will be holding one in October in the Ashdown Forest area. Here we have a Q&A with the man himself:

The more profound change, more profound that finding free and unusual foods, is in encouraging peoples' love and understanding of the natural world. Foragers look at the world more closely.

What is the most challenging part about foraging? Nothing, really. It is our natural mode of existence and we take to it quickly. Of course we would have once learned what was edible and what was not from tribal members, but that is not really possible any more. What we do have is books and people who teach. It takes a little time, practice and study, but it is not difficult to identify most species.

What is your best gem of advice for mushroom foragers new to the game? I suggest learning ten easy species of fungi many of which we have found at Moon Down! And the ten most dangerous species - some of which occur at Moon Down.

How can foraging change someone's day to day living?

What is the your favourite foragable item in this area?

I certainly do not forage every day or eat only foraged food. But my store cupboard is packed with foraged ingredients which will form part of most meals I prepare at home.

It is a heavily wooded area and many of the trees support the mycorrhizal (growing in symbiosis with tree roots) fungi such as the superb Ceps, Chanterelles, Horn of Plenty and more. However my favourite wild mushroom of woodland is the Wood Blewit. This too grows in the area but with a different life style - that of living off of fallen leaves. Magnificent with garlic and cream.

Good luck to any new foragers! For more information about John's upcoming local Moon Down course, see advert opposite.

William Robinson of Gravetye: The Master Gardener Gravetye’s most notable owner, William Robinson, is one of the greatest gardeners of all time, he revolutionised the very concept of the English Garden. Robinson railed against the prevalent style of the day: the high Victorian formal patterned garden with planted out schemes, based loosely on the Italian “classical” garden style. He championed the “wild garden” which lead to an enhanced concept of the English cottage garden (known and loved today), and was an early practitioner of the mixed herbaceous border of hardy perennials - which he pretty much invented. This in turn contributed greatly to a movement in gardening which paralleled the Arts and Crafts movement of the latter Victorian years, the mantra of which was a search for “honest simplicity and vernacular style”, stepping away from excessively ornate, artificial-style objects and ornaments. Robinson bought Gravetye Manor and the one thousand acres in which it stands in 1884. It was to be his home until he died, well into his nineties in 1935. It was at Gravetye that he realised many of his pioneering ideas

and seeds from a bag on his lap. The garden room he built at the end of the formal garden provided him with a shelter from which he could watch his beloved flowers and trees from a fresh viewpoint.

As a young man he had worked in many formal gardens in England and France but in his planning, planting and landscaping he always yearned to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens and woods. The variety and charm of the arrangements and layouts of different types of garden at Gravetye remain his creation and are today viewed as a memorial to the great man.

His story began as a young boy of humble beginnings: William was born in Ireland in 1838. His aunt, Sarah Handfield Robinson, wife of his uncle Joseph, encouraged her young nephew to become a gardener. He started work for the Marquess of Waterford at Curraghmore as a garden boy and later was the foreman at Ballykilcannan, the estate of Irish baronet, Sir Hunt Johnson-Walsh. While there, aged 21, he was put in charge of a large number of greenhouses. According to

Even in his twilight years when partly crippled, he would go out in his wheelchair and scatter bulbs

WILLIAM ROBINSON OF GRAVETYE: THE MASTER GARDENER CONTINUED

one account, as the result of a bitter quarrel, one cold winter night in 1861 he let the fires go out, killing many valuable plants. Other accounts consider the story to be a gross exaggeration. Whatever the case, Robinson soon left for Dublin in 1861, where with the influence of David Moore, head of the botanical garden at Glasnevin (a family friend), work was found for him at the Botanical Gardens of Regent’s Park, London, where he was given responsibility for the hardy herbaceous plants, specialising in British wildflowers. At that very moment in time, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Kensington gardens were being designed and planted with vast numbers of greenhouse flowers in mass plantings. Robinson wrote that, “it was not easy to get away from all this false and hideous ‘art’”. But his work with native British plants did allow him to get away to the countryside, where he “began to get an idea (which should be taught to every boy at school) that there was (for gardens even) much beauty in our native flowers and trees.” After working hard at Regents Park to educate himself he left to become The Times horticultural correspondent in 1867. He founded eight gardening periodicals and wrote nineteen books.

And by 1885 he had saved enough to buy the Gravetye estate. Robinson was living at Philpot’s Manor when he first saw Gravetye and stated: “this is the place I mean to live in”. Initially he lived at The Moat, a nearby 16th century cottage, for the first four years. During this time he refurbished it, while both renovating and extending the main manor house. For the following 50 years he developed the gardens and woods in line with his life’s mission: to direct English gardens to naturalness. He advocated dense plantings that left no bare soil, with the spaces between taller plants filled with what are now commonly called ground cover plants. Even the rose garden at Gravetye was filled with saxifrage between and under the roses. Distinguished visitors came from all over the world to see Robinson’s Gravetye. One of his great friends and fellow gardening pioneer Gertrude Jekyll was a frequent visitor. They had first met in 1875 and discovered their design principles were in full accord. Their professional association lasted for over 50 years. He helped her on her garden at Munstead Wood; and she in turn provided plants for his garden at Gravetye Manor. Jekyll wrote about Robinson that: “...when English gardening

14

was mostly represented by the innate futilities of the ‘bedding’ system, with its wearisome repetitions and garish colouring, Mr William Robinson chose as his work in live to make better known the treasures that were lying neglected, and at the same time to overthrow the feeble follies of the ‘bedding’ system. It is mainly owing to his unremitting labours that a clear knowledge of the world of hardy-plant beauty is now placed within easy reach of all who care to acquire it, and that the ‘bedding mania’ is virtually dead.” He employed many staff including head gardener Austin Adam Stratford who was at Gravetye from 1897 to 1901 and Ernest Markham who held this post from 1910 until he died aged fifty seven in 1937. In 1909, Robinson fell from a stile on his way to church in West Hoathly and injured his back. He never recovered and was wheelchair bound from then on. He persuaded his temporary nurse, Mary Gilpin, to stay permanently. She and many others helped to re-establish his mobility. Clem Rothwell worked at Gravetye as a house boy and recalls pushing his boss around in his wheelchair. Mary Gilpin’s niece, Iris, came to live with her at Gravetye Continues over the page. WILLIAM ROBINSON OF GRAVETYE: THE MASTER GARDENER CONTINUED

when Iris’s mother became unable to care for her five children and her husband (who was gassed in WW1). Iris became William’s frequent companion and later, Robinson built a house for Mary Gilpin in Vowels Lane, now called Holms Cottage. On his ninetieth birthday Mary Gilpin arranged for some West Hoathly school children to go to a party at Gravetye and to sing to William and receive a commemorative mug and plate. This continued each year until his death and he bequeathed £250 in his will to ensure that the annual party would continue indefinitely. It still continues to this day.

William Robinson’s memorial placed at Golders Green Crematorium when he died in 1935. He was an early advocate of cremation and was cremated here after a service at Saint Margaret’s church in West Hoathly. He had designed the crematorium gardens in 1901, as acknowledged on this memorial.

Progeny has called him one of the greatest gardeners of all time, we couldn’t agree more.

CLARINET GOES TO TOWN: Q&A WITH EMMA JOHNSON © John Batten Photography A tribute to the great jazz clarinettists (Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Sidney Bechet, etc.) will be performed with world renowned clarinet star Emma Johnson MBE, England’s best loved clarinet player and the South East's virtuoso. Accompanied by John Lenehan on piano (‘Peerless’- The Guardian, ‘Masterly’ - The Times) plus Paul Clarvis, the UK’s top jazz drummer (Leonard Bernstein’s first call percussionist, Paul has played on the soundtracks of Star Wars, Skyfall, The Bourne Ultimatum and over 100 movies). Full details of the performance are below. We are extremely honoured to have a Q&A with Emma herself, who incidentally, as a child, happened to attend nearby Sevenoaks School.

which you treasure most from those teachers?

As a classical musician who has 'conquered her field', what inspires you to stay at the top of your game and deliver year in, year out?

When I started out I was lucky to play concertos with Sir Yehudi Menuhin conducting and his encouragement to follow my own musical instincts was invaluable. It is important to have your own individual take on things as well as listening to what your teachers say.

For me what is interesting about performing is continually pushing yourself to make your playing more interesting and more colourful; I wouldn't like to think that my playing remained static. Exploring different areas of repertoire is another way of keeping playing fresh and I shall be taking the audience on a journey into the hits of great jazz clarinettists Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Sidney Bechet when I visit Frant this time.

How has the world of the 'clarinet' changed since you won the BBC's Young Musician of the Year award all those years ago? The clarinet is more accepted as a solo instrument than it used to be, particularly in the classical field, and I hope I have played a little part in that. Boundaries are more relaxed now too, thank goodness, so that there is an acceptance that a classical musician can play other types of music toosuch as jazz!

What is your most memorable performance to date, and why? A few years ago I performed with the jazz singer, Cleo Laine in her final London performance and it was great to work with such an expressive, individual and yet accommodating musician.

Clarinet Goes to Town concert at Frant Church, High Street, Frant, TN3 9DX on Friday 29th September at 8pm (doors open 7:30pm). Licensed bar area tickets £20 from Frant Stores, Britten’s Music Shop, Tunbridge Wells. Online: www.wegottickets.com or phone: 07768 115184.

Dear Sarah My son has always had a close-knit circle of friends, they are now all young teenagers of 14/15 and some of them have taken to smoking weed. Our son says he doesn't hang about with them when they're smoking and we believe him, we have always tried not to interfere with his friendship circles and we want him to come to his own understanding about people. We feel if we interfere too much, he may 'go the other way' in frustration and go all-out rebellious, as he has had these friends for so long, and besides we don't want to force a friendshipbreakup. However at the same time we are not comfortable to have this possible bad influence hanging over our son, especially at such a young age. My husband smoked lots of weed in his early teens and it really took it's toll and is a big regret... we don't want our son to go the same way. What should we do? - Mrs. B

the best advice from a local, highly-ex

This is such a tricky issue to parent as it’s often quite difficult to get the balance right between being too heavy handed and asking him to cut all ties with his friends and not doing enough to safeguard him from possible temptation and peer pressure. It sounds as if you have quite an honest, open relationship with your son if he feels he has been able to talk to you about what his friends are up to so keep that up. For some, telling our children to stay away from friends who are doing things that we disapprove of doesn’t always work and, as you rightly say, could instil a sense of rebellion and lead to him making poor decisions. It is important that your son understands how you feel about him hanging around with friends who are smoking pot. Could a candid conversation about how weed affected your husband be a possibility? Help him understand what the very real consequences of pot smoking can be, especially on adolescent boys. Also make him aware that, whilst it may appear to be a bit of harmless fun, cannabis can be a gateway drug to harder substances which can have devastating effects. Of course, you don’t want to frightened him but knowledge is power. I think if you feel you have a trustworthy relationship with your son and you feel that he really wants these friendships to continue, try to instil a sense of courage in him when he is with his friends. Make sure he understands that continuing to say no in the face of peer pressure is a good and brave thing to do. Often, in a group of peers, they’ll be another kid in the mix who perhaps doesn’t want to be smoking pot but doesn’t have the courage to say no. Help your son see that he could be helping someone else by saying no. Remind him that you are trusting him to make good choices and that if that trust is broken then there will be consequences to that. It is so hard for children who face these temptations on a daily basis now but I strongly believe that open communication about how you feel and what you expect from him are a really good start. Good luck.

DEAR SARAH CONTINUED

Dear Sarah, My best friend has recently been going through a very hard time with one of her children. She's stopped answering calls or replying to texts. At first our little friendship group was very understanding but now it's got the point where we are very concerned about her wellbeing as she's cut herself off from all socialising and almost all but essential communication. Should I go round to face her and find out what is happening in a non-confrontational manner or just let her go on without prying and leave her to it to get through it as she feels fit. It's been going on for so long now that it will soon become a way of life for her. Ms H.

Sometimes, when we need help the most, we are reluctant to ask for it and can withdraw, as your friend has done. No doubt she thinks that she doesn’t want to burden her friends with her problems and will just deal with it herself. I would definitely go around and see her. Whether you want to try to invite her to yours for a coffee and a chat or just turn up at hers in the afternoon/ evening with a bottle of wine and a shoulder is best left to you but you need to let her know that you are there for her. You mention that she is part of a wider group of friends but perhaps, initially, this is something that you could try to help her with alone. Sometimes it can seem overwhelming to have lots of people asking you to share your problems and a one to one might be all she can handle at the moment. She may not open up to you straight away and seem reluctant to engage. Please don’t take this personally. You obviously care about her so just keep letting her know that. Remind her that, whenever she is ready, you are there to listen.

Dear Sarah, I find that after an argument, my husband can remain in a sulk for a good couple of days once it even stretched to four... I try to be tolerant and let it run its course as he's not interested in talking much... but honestly, how long is too long? - Mrs A Have you ever tried to ask him why he likes to dwell on the argument aftermath for so long? Is there a possibility that somehow he is trying to make you feel responsible for the disagreement and make you feel bad? Perhaps discuss with him what he hopes to achieve by sulking? How do you respond to his sulking? If you have children, perhaps, in a calmer moment, you could ask him how he thinks this behaviour might reflect on your children and what it is teaching them about conflict resolution. Good communication is key to successful relationships and if he was perhaps able to communicate to you why he reacts this way after a disagreement that you may, together, gain an understanding and see what you both might be able to do to try and change this habit in a positive way. It’s probably not a good idea to try to get these answers or look deeper into it whilst in the heat of the moment but when you’re both in a good place, bring the subject up and explore it a little. And just for the record, four days is definitely too long! Failing all of that, give him a 24 hour sulkfest limit and then tell him his time is up! Good luck.

Please email your 'Dear Sarahs' in confidence and anonymously (if you wish) to Sarah at info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk

Bertie the Ball-Dog You may remember the wonderful Golden Retreiver Bertie who reached 100 found tennis balls on Ashdown Forest a while ago. The fabulous news is, with his One Dog Campaign to keep the forest tidy, Bertie has reached the new milestone of 200 tennis balls found! Well done Bertie, an example to us all.

Forest Row resident Suzanne Hillen recently launched her novella 'Medway - my way'. After exploring the 98 KM of the river Medway, Suzanne published her experiences. The story twists and turns like a river but has a fairytale undercurrent. When Dutch Suzanne and her English friend break with daily life to journey the river Medway, in a double canoe, they discuss motherhood and how their countries fought each other in the 17th century in the Raid on the Medway. Reaching the estuary at Sheerness, they feel compelled to seek the source and walk from Forest Row to where the river starts in Turners Hill. An adventurous, funny and upbeat story set in your local surroundings. Books can be bought online at: www.suzannehillen.com Price ÂŁ9.95

A feast for the senses at this year’s LAF As summer is hotting up, so is the programme for the Lindfield Arts Festival. Next month sees the return of the eighth annual festival, and this year is looking bigger and better than ever. The High Street transforms with an abundance of activities, including the centre stage with a variety of performances including the return of the circus shows. Look out for the Dressed Ducks in the shop windows and, if you have ever wanted to learn to crochet or decoupage then Dolly's craft van will oblige. A fine art exhibition will be staged at Lindfield Primary Academy on Saturday and Sunday featuring work by talented local artists, with refreshments provided. On Saturday, innovative Robot

Relays see competitors enter an almighty battle of the bots on space hoppers, whilst supporters cheer from the hay bale amphitheatre. A mini festival of its own will take place at the United Reformed Church featuring a craft exhibition supported by Handelsbanken with locally crafted goods on offer. Diverse performances and workshops will take place, from drama, dance and creative writing to – wait for it – mutant toy hacking! What could be better than reinventing a toy slightly past its sell by date into a brand new creation? Think Toy Story on steroids! More activities are being confirmed, including two very special evening events on Friday night. The Coffee Works will host Poetry Night featuring a group of Sussex-

28

based poets, including a former musician from the Ronnie Scots Club, which will set the stage for the festival on opening night. Meanwhile, Komedia regular Rob Dumbrell, will compère a Comedy Night at the Bent Arms, bringing along some well-known names from the comedy circuit. For all you budding comedians, there are a couple of 5 minute stand-up comedy sets up for grabs! Registration for workshops and events will go online in midAugust with SWALK acting as the Lindfield Box Office. If you would like to contribute in any way or exhibit, perform, play or volunteer during the festival weekend (8th, 9th, 10th September) please email enquiries@ lindfieldartsfestival.com or call Stix: 07868 879084 for more information. HOLBY CITY STAR AT GIELGUD’S FINAL PERFORMANCE AT THE HUB Former Holby City star Sharon Maughan, known to many as the infamous Nescafe ‘Gold Blend’ actress, attended the Gielgud Academy of Performing Arts’ (GAPA) final end of year performance at the Hub, Hayward’s Heath last month. ‘GAPA Land’, inspired by this years hit movie LALA Land, featured an homage medley to the Oscar winning film, danced to the live music of the GAPA Band as well as a Cole Porter medley and a new ballet ‘Imperial Concerto’. The show also premiered some screen test films for Principal Suzanne Gielgud’s forthcoming feature film ‘Olga'. After the performance Sharon Maughan and Republica pop star Saffron, handed out medals for achievement and progress during the annual prize giving ceremony. Fourteen year old Madeline Wrigley from Forest Row said “It was such an honour to

receive the ballet medal from Sharon. She was so lovely to us”. Sharon congratulated all the pupils telling them, “Wow. You are all absolutely beautiful!”. GAPA Principal Suzanne Gielgud explains: Sharon and I recently met at the 2017 Nice International Film Festival where I had my latest documentary film ‘the Gospel of Ross McKim’ in competition. Sharon won the award for Best Actress for the feature film ‘Untitled’. I invited her to come and watch the GAPA show. Having Sharon at the performance was such a treat for us all as she added a real touch of professionalism and glamour to the day. “The Hub is now shut for at least 6 months while building works are completed. Meanwhile, GAPA is relocating to Great Walstead School with its wonderful performing arts facilities.

The Grinsteadian Father of Waitrose: Wallace Wyndham Waite LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

The founders of Waitrose, Wallace Wyndham Waite, Arthur Rose and David Taylor opened a grocery shop in Acton, in 1904, known then as Waite, Rose and Taylor. However, when David Taylor left the business three years later, the remaining partners renamed it Waitrose Ltd, combining their two surnames to form the now, familiar name of the supermarket chain. Wallace Waite was born in Moat Road, East Grinstead on March 29th 1881. He appears on the 1881 census at five days old as “infant under one month”, as yet unnamed. His parents William and Sarah already had five children, the eldest three were born in Herefordshire. John Wallace senior by a year was born in East Grinstead as would be the next addition to the Waite family, John and Wallace's sister Bertha. By 1891 the family had moved to Shepton Mallett in Somerset. Sometime before 1895 The Waites moved yet again, this time to Wandsworth, where their youngest child was born. Family circumstances led to Wallace being apprenticed to a grocer on his thirteenth

birthday. By 1901, Wallace gives his occupation as a grocer’s assistant. He is a visitor staying with Katherine Cuthbert in Spring Street, Hyde Park. The fact that he is described as a visitor and not a boarder seems to imply that she was a relative or friend of the family. At the same time, his future partner, Arthur Rose is working as a warehouseman in a wholesale provisions outlet in Walthamstow. He was

34

living with his wife, Sarah, and his father-in-law, James Holderway. The two men were obviously working in similar retail areas, although how they met and decided to join forces is unknown. David Taylor is difficult to trace, over two million people with that name appear on the 1901 census. His involvement with the company was short lived, Continues over the page. THE GRINSTEADIAN FATHER OF WAITROSE: WALLACE WYNDHAM WAITE CONTINUED

however, and he does not play any part in the future development of the company, from one shop in Acton to the major supermarket chain it is today. By 1911, Wallace Waite is married to Kathleen with an eighteen month-old daughter, Barbara Kathleen. He gives his occupation as managing director of a general store. They are living in Wallingford. Strangely, Arthur Rose still describes himself as a warehouseman, although he must have been a co-director. Waite was responsible for the buying and Rose looked after the accounts, their policy was keen pricing but high standards. They gradually acquired more shops and in 1914 at the beginning of the First World War were awarded the contract to supply the army camp at Catterick. Arthur Rose joined the Royal Horse Artillery at the beginning of the war and was part of the British Expeditionary Force. He was wounded in the thigh by a bomb on March 23rd. 1918 and took no further part in the conflict. He seems also to have lost interest in Waitrose and left all the business in the hands of Wallace Waite, finally resigning in 1924.

now introduced a string of shops in less wealthy places, called Wyndhams (after his middle name). He was keen to introduce and promote foreign foods, especially from the British Empire. For his work in this field he was awarded the MBE. In 1937 Waite met Michael Walker from the John Lewis Partnership. Waite decided to put Waitrose into their hands. He stayed on for three years but retired in 1940, convinced that his business was would thrive under the partnership.

Indeed, under the leadership of John Lewis the Waitrose stores have continued to innovate. They were the first supermarket chain to sell organic food, and formed a link with Prince Charles and his Duchy Originals. They have also brought in Heston Blumental recipes. been successful in helping their communities. In 2007 they opened their first shop abroad in the United Arab Emirates. Their advertising over last Christmas was based on a poem about a robin, by Michael Morpurgo, who by co-incidence spent six years of his life at school, about three miles away from the East Grinstead branch of Waitrose. Wallace and his wife Kathleen moved to a house called Kinross in Gerrards Cross. Kathleen died in a nursing home in October 1949. Wallace continued to live there until his own death in 1971. He must have died content that his dream to “lift the food trade to a higher plane” had developed within the John Lewis Partnership, to heights even he had not envisaged.

This Kitchen company, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. This area is known as Tabell Ghyll. Its woodland is most unusual for the public part of the Forest with its many large trees, especially beech, and several hectares of planted sweet chestnut coppice. The area was sold off from the common land of the Forest in 1693 and only ‘returned’ during World War Two in exchange for the compulsory purchase of land elsewhere for military reasons. In the map of 1931 (below) the heavily wooded Ghyll is in marked contrast to the heath to the north of the stream – a reflection of different land use over 250 years.
