“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Map of the Hundred Acre Wood drawn by E. H. Shepard The original illustrated map of The Hundred Acre Wood (the Five Hundred Acre wood of Ashdown Forest) was featured in the opening pages of A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh. Perhaps the most famous map in English literature fetched the highest sum of any book illustration ever sold at auction. The 1926 sketch by E.H. Shepard set the scene for readers and introduced them to the wonderful world of Pooh, Christopher Robin and his

ASHDOWN FOREST’S FAVOURITE SON WINNIE THE POOH
“They’ve (the stories) never been brought out in the UK or the US with illustrations by anyone else apart from EH Shepard and that is the power, and ability of the illustrator, and why this is probably the most famous map in English literature”.
It was first sold by Sotheby’s in 1968, where it went for £650, before the auction house sold it again to a private collector two years later for £1,700. Its value has increased far beyond inflation, as testament to Winnie the Pooh’s
untouchable stature in the world of literature. Another reason for its indelible fame, is the instant recognition of E.H. Shepard’s illustrations. Dr Errington explained why Shepard’s work was unique:
Four other original Winniethe-Pooh illustrations were sold alongside the map, with the five drawings selling for a combined total of £917,500! The previous eye-watering record for an auctioned illustration was again held by an E.H. Shepard drawing of Milne’s characters playing Poohsticks, which sold for a whooping £314,500.
Childhood Memories of Pooh Last month Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry splashed out £8000 on a 1926 first edition version of Winnie the Pooh for the christening of his nephew Prince Louis. Only 30,000 were printed in the first run. It is understood the purchase was made from rare book seller Peter Harrington in Kensington, London. Apparently, what prompted the purchase was that one of Harry’s happiest childhood memories was being read classic bedtime stories by his mother. As a big fan of books as a youngster the prince devoured anything by A.A. Milne, but his favourite was Robinson Crusoe. He likely wants to pass his love of classics onto his niece and nephews.

Standing The Test Of Time
THE PRIEST HOUSE
In the year 1392 Pope Urban VI gave the Cluniac Priory of St. Pancras in Lewes permission to appropriate land in the parishes of West Hoathly, Patcham, Ditchling & Wivelsfield to compensate the priory for revenue lost during raids on the Sussex coast by French & Spanish marauders. The manor of the rectory of West Hoathly was created from land that had previously formed part of the manor of Lindfield. However, the manor lands were sadly neglected & in 1426 the parishioners petitioned Pope Martin V about the priory’s management.
It was possibly as a response to this that the Priest House was built, as an estate office, in the late 1420’s. Then in 1524 the priory leased the rectory manor to John Browne, a “husbandman” of the parish, thus the Priest House became a family home. In the nascent days of the reformation, 1538 Henry VIII seized all the property of Lewes Priory and so the Browne’s Manor was given to Thomas Cromwell, the king’s new secretary & chief adviser. When Cromwell fell from grace and was beheaded in 1540 the manor formed part of the divorce settlement

of Anne of Cleves – Henry’s marriage to Cleves was the very reason for Cromwell’s downfall. Throughout all, John Browne, continued as tenant until his death in 1546. He was succeeded by his son, Thomas. After the death of Anne of Cleves the property reverted back to the crown and rent was paid to Queen Mary for a year & then to Elizabeth I. In 1560 the queen sold all the property that had once belonged to Lewes Priory, (supposedly to pay her dressmaker’s bills!), to two London land speculators, Nicholas Pynde and Thomas Reeve. They sold the manor lands & the Priest House to Enquiries: 01342 300152 Please mention us when responding to adverts

THE PRIEST HOUSE CONTINUED
John’s son, Thomas who then set about modernising it. The house was originally an open hall, with a living room & upper chamber on the north end & a service end with a buttery, pantry & solar to the south. The roof was probably thatched. However, Thomas had begun to mine iron ore on his land for the foundries working around West Hoathly. He now styled himself “yeoman” & needed a house to match his new status. The ground floor level was lowered to accommodate the massive stone chimney that replaced the medieval open hearth. The chimney
enabled two new rooms to be created upstairs, each with their own fireplace. A new front doorway had to be created to match the new floor level, replacing the impressive, but rather impractical, medieval arched door. The thatched roof was replaced with Horsham stone but the new tiles were so heavy that the roof timbers had to be reinforced to take the weight. The hard work paid off as by the end of the 16th century the Priest House was probably the finest building in the village & Thomas Browne could call himself “squire”.
18
The house remained in the hands of the Browne family for another hundred years but their fortunes were in decline & in 1695 the house & manor lands had to be sold to pay off their debts. The new owner was Mrs. Anna Hooper of Barbados. She never visited West Hoathly & took little interest in her property. The house was split into two cottages & rented to George Payne & Samuel Parks. In 1731 the land was sold to Robert Bostock of Otford, Kent. The Bostock family held the land for 150 years but did little to maintain the Priest House itself, which was lived in by the carter & cowman

The exhibition is about remembrance, not of the Great War itself, it is about the men: the shoe-menders, labourers, gardeners & shop assistants, some volunteers & some conscripts, who went to war between 1914 & 1918. Using photographs & documents from the West Hoathly Local History Archive, the West Hoathly branch of the British Legion & the men’s families the exhibition also aims to bring together the sometimes conflicting information on the men who served from the memorials, records and rolls of honour around the parish to create a definitive record and a permanent resource for future generations of a remarkable generation who saw horrors they would never forget and the end of a way of life, the end of an era. The exhibition runs until the end of October. The house & garden are open from 10 to 5:30pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays & 12pm to 5:30pm on Sundays. Forest Row’s
HARRY THURSTON WINS BAFTA 10-year-old Harry Thurston from Forest Row won a Bafta in the ‘Game Making Award’ (10 to 14 year old category) for his computer game Maggie. He is this year’s youngest winner in Bafta’s Young Game Designers competition. Maggie is a minimalist puzzle in which you guide Maggie, a cute red cube, through a series of levels using only her ability to stretch. The player explores Maggie's world by growing and shrinking. The ten levels in the demo are easy to start with but get more and more challenging as Maggie moves through them. Maggie is Harry’s first program using Unity. After receiving the prestigious award at Bafta’s home in London’s West End last month, we asked Harry: What was the basic idea behind your game? ‘I like puzzle games and wanted to create one myself but I wanted to think up a different idea. So, I came up with the idea that instead of moving normally, Maggie could only shrink or grow. Then all I had to do was come up with level designs. Along the way we added different features, like switches and gravity blocks’.
What was your reaction to winning a Bafta? ‘I was really thrilled and excited, especially when I walked up on to the stage to receive the award. I hope this is the start of something big!’ And as part of his prize Bafta will provide Harry with a bespoke mentoring package to support him in his future game making. He will also receive other benefits including studio tours, and perhaps most importantly free games.
What made you decide to develop a computer game? ‘I love programming in my spare time and at school. Then two years ago my brother Charlie won the Bafta YGD, which inspired me to have a go myself’.
In a written message to attendees, Bafta’s President HRH the Duke of Cambridge said: “The variety of themes that have been tackled – and with such ingenuity and creativity - shows just how versatile games can be in representing who we are and what we believe in.”
What has the response been so far, from users of the game? ‘My friends and teachers at school were all really impressed with the game and some of them are even queuing up to play it at break time! I think people find it a fun puzzling challenge’.
Congratulations Harry!

CHEMICAL FREE CLEANING Cleaning the Dishwasher It’s advisable to clean your dishwasher every six months or so. Run a cycle with one cup of vinegar in a bowl on the top rack. Then sprinkle a bit of bicarb of soda on the bottom of the washer and run it again - can both be run on short cycles. The vinegar and bicarb of soda chemically combine to help to clean out any food particles and leave it smelling fresh and clean. Oven Cleaning Mix these ingredients together to form a thick, spreadable paste: bicarb soda, salt (preferably coarse), washing up liquid, and a sponge. The paste should be thick. Spread over the oven and leave for a few hours. Then clean off with a sponge and lots of water. Cleaning Grout Mix 1-2 tsp cream of tartar with lemon juice, apply with a toothbrush, and rinse.
Winner of the Sussex Young Musician of the Year 2018 Chailey Secondary School graduate Rebecca Leggett, a mezzo singer from Haywards Heath has won the Sussex Young Musician of the Year 2018. Four finalists were chosen from over 31 talented entrants. After listening to a 10-minute performance from each contestant, the judges (Gareth Hancock, Director of Opera, Royal Academy of Music; Jeff Lloyd-Roberts, International Opera Singer; and Kate Kent, Chair of the Coro Nuovo Choir) had the unenviable task of selecting a winner. On the night, Rebecca’s overall performance captivated the panel; she received £1000 from Neil Peskett of Traditional Oak and Timber to help with her musical studies.
Natural Cleaning Wipes
On winning the competition, Rebecca commented:
Tea tree oil is an excellent natural oil to fight germs and bacteria all over your house. Just mix 1 tsp washing up liquid with 25 drops essential oils, and 1 cup of vinegar together, and use reusable cloths or an old, cut-up t-shirt for your wipes (if you need more liquid just increase accordingly).
“I am over the moon to have won Coro Nuovo’s Young Musician of the Year! It means a great deal to win a competition that supports young musicians from Sussex. I have lived here all my life and this county is very special to me.”

Lazy-Summer Recipes Anyone want to take it super easy this August? We thought so. These recipes are so simple you might want to get the kids involved too.
Choc Cherry Popcorn Cakes METHOD
INGREDIENTS
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan oven 160°C, gas mark 4. Put 14 paper bun cases into bun trays.
• 2 tsp vegetable oil • 100g popping corn • 2 egg whites • 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder • 65g dried cherries, chopped You could use sultanas or dried apricots instead of cherries. Or a combination of all.
2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large heavy-based saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Add the popping corn, put the lid on and shake the pan to coat the kernels in the oil. Put the pan over a medium-high heat. The kernels will begin to pop, and when they do, carefully shake the pan occasionally. 3. A few popcorn kernels might not pop – just remove them. 4. When the popping subsides, remove from the heat. Cool for 5 minutes. 5. Whisk the egg whites and cocoa powder together in a large bowl. Stir in the cooled popcorn and dried cherries. Share the mixture between the bun cases, then bake for 8-10 minutes until set. Cool.
Creamy Hummus Dip Serves 1, just multiply to serve extra.
INGREDIENTS • 2 heaped tbsp tinned chickpeas • Juice of ½ lemon • 1 tbsp Greek style yoghurt
METHOD
• 1 tbsp olive oil
1. Put the chickpeas, lemon juice, yoghurt, oil, spices and garlic in a bowl.
• ¼ tsp paprika (or to taste) • ¼ tsp cumin (or to taste) • 1 clove of garlic (peeled)
2. Using a hand blender, mix together until smooth. 3. Serve with the pitta bread strips and carrot and celery sticks or anything that takes your fancy.

The Hop Pickers of Scotney Castle In January Scotney Castle launched a new sculpture site: an area in the garden which was originally home to a piece by Henry Moore was to be used for a new installation using the castle as a perfect backdrop.
Blooming Marvellous! Hard-working volunteers have been brightening up a therapy garden for patients at the Horder Centre in Crowborough. The 12-strong team of corporate volunteers from Openreach spent a day gardening and painting furniture in the garden that was created to help patients recover from surgery. The hospital received a generous donation of plants from local Crowborough business, Millbrook Garden Centre, which have added additional colour and scent to enhance the therapeutic environment. The garden is a unique area where those recovering from surgery can use exercise equipment outside and enjoy the benefits of walking on different surfaces to increase their strength.
A couple of weeks ago Scotney welcomed their second piece from Shropshire based artist, Simion Conolly, with his sculpture 'Hopping Down', an installation comprising 33 hop pickers which will sit in the grounds for the next 6 months. This will help to celebrate the tradition of hop picking in the area, with Little Scotney Farm being the last working hop farm within the National Trust. History In 1977, Henry Moore loaned his bronze sculpture, Three Piece Reclining Figure to Betty Hussey as a tribute to her husband Christopher Hussey. The piece was located on a plinth on an island within the moat for many years but has since been returned to the Henry Moore Foundation. During Christopher and Betty's time living at Scotney Castle they had many artists visit them of whose works are still displayed in the house today. In particular these included pieces by John Ward, John Piper and Osbert Lancaster. Throughout September guided walks will be running from Scotney to see the hop gardens, picking shed, drying oast and hoppers huts. You can also sample the Scotney Ale. New Tribute to Sussex’s Famous Plant Hunters to create an exciting space which incorporates the exotic palms and plants sent back to Sussex by the great early 1900’s plant hunters, with rare and unusual new species collected by 21st century plant hunters. Andrew John Stephenson Clarke said: “We hope the project will communicate the depth of gratitude we have to the plant hunters of old and also the new pioneers of the 21st century like Crûg Farm Plants. The design is stunning and we are thrilled to have worked with Sophie Walker. We hope visitors enjoy the narrative of this new garden which extends the horticultural history of Borde Hill and my great-grandfather, Col Stephenson Clarke who did so much to bring rare and unusual plants to Sussex.”
Dr Tim Upson, Chairman of Borde Hill Garden & RHS Director of Horticulture and Andrew John Stephenson Clarke, photo by John Glover
Sophie Walker said: “I hope my work will engage the public and prove that exciting new plant-finds can be used in design. We don’t know exactly how these plants will behave and I have been working with Head Gardener,
Last month Borde Hill Garden unveiled a new plant hunters garden as part of its 125th anniversary. The legacy of Borde Hill’s diverse collection of plants is at the heart of the new design. Four generations of the Stephenson Clarke family have lived in this historic Tudor house, with adjoining gardens near Haywards Heath. It is probably best-known as a plant hunters paradise with many rare shrubs and trees sent home to Colonel Stephenson R Clarke by the great and famous plant hunters of the day including George Forest, Frank Kingdon Ward, Reginald Farrer, etc. Andrew John and Eleni Stephenson Clarke, the current custodians of Borde Hill commissioned Sophie Walker to redesign an area, Round Dell,

Andy Stevens in developing an intuitive gardening practice around these exotic plants.” In 2014 Sophie became the youngest woman to design a garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show with Cave Pavilion, she has won multiple awards. She explained the use of something that isn’t immediately identifiable as a ‘freeing experience’ and a helpful way to free the viewer from our preconceived ideas about place, to be able to look at the design for what it is. CROWBOROUGH REMEMBERS: 1914-1918
for the occasion by local composer Simon Austin, and poet and writer Nick Nye.
This year marks the centenary of the end of the Great War (1914-1918) and the Crowborough Community Festival will be commemorating this moment in history with a week-long programme of events called Crowborough Remembers in October 2018.
As the festival takes place during half term there will be fun and educational activities for young people, including creative workshops called People, Poppies and Poems as well as a ‘Secret Stones Trail’ with a painted poppy for each of the 150 names commemorated on Crowborough’s War Memorial.
A major exhibition called Crowborough’s War 1914-1918 will be held at the Beacon Academy School from Monday 22nd October until Thursday 25th October. The exhibition will tell the story of the town and the thousands of soldiers who were based in the army training camps before being deployed to the front line. The students of Beacon Academy will create a striking poppy installation to be displayed as part of the exhibition.
Local artists of all calibres are invited to submit artwork with a WW1 theme to participate in a competition and exhibition (running from 1st to 21st November). Artist materials to the value of £500 will be awarded to the first, second and third prize winners. “This is such an important centenary in world history and Crowborough should remember the part it played”, said Denis.
“We are calling on residents who may have ancestors who fought in WW1 to share their stories or memorabilia with us as part of the exhibition. There are many local people who may have family connections or relatives who died fighting or survived and came home to live out their lives, and we’d like to hear from them”, said festival director Denis Hart.
More info: www.crowboroughcommunityfestival.org.
The festival programme will start on Saturday 20th October with a commemorative Choral Concert held in the Main Hall. Pergolesi Stabat Mater and the Fauré Requiem will feature, alongside This Human Shield, specially written
