Are you looking for a fulfilling job? Brooker Care is an East Grinstead based Care provider founded and run by Denise Howells. In 2006 her father Eddie Brooker passed away from the effects of Parkinson’s disease, Dementia and Diabetes. With nearly 30 years of nursing and care experience Denise was able to help and guide him through his last days. Afterwards Denise decided to set up her own home care company, naming it after her father, with the aim of providing the same level of care that she was able to provide him. Generations of Denise’s family have lived and worked in East Grinstead and with the health-care connections she has made over the years, it was an obvious choice to be based here. Brooker Care is family run and prides itself on fostering a family atmosphere for both its staff and clients. They have a team of like-minded, excellently trained staff who believe that we are all entitled to consideration and respect. One of their carers, John
Carlyle, recently won the award for ‘West Sussex Best Carer’ in the ‘Life long Learner ‘ category which demonstrates the attitude Brooker Care prides itself on. Last month, after a recent surprise inspection, the high standards at Brooker Care were demonstrated as they passed with flying colours. Due to expansion Brooker care is currently looking to take on new staff, either part-time or full-time. There is no need to have experience; training will be given to you. All you need is a caring and considerate attitude. For more information about working for Brooker Care or receiving their care call: 01342 311999

In 2003 Forest Row Business owner Ben Sunderland founded The Internet Retailer, an online shop with FRNewsv2.indd 1 products for the home and garden. 10 years later, his ever growing business now has a team of 25 staff. This year he decided to venture into the High Street with his new Electrical Store on his very own doorstep in Forest Row to, in his own words, ‘back up the High Street with another empty shop now gone’. Last month Ben was invited to Downing Street to give feedback and advice as part of a group of fastgrowing, up-and-coming UK businesses. Here is our Q&A with Ben:

on my online business before and after work, easily doing 7-9am & 6pm to 11pm on a regular basis & weekends.
How did you come to receive such a prestigious invitation to Downing Street?
As a highly successful internet business, Why did you decide to open a shop in your local village of Forest Row?
Networking with an enterprise group, I got on really well with the guys from iwoca (an online finance company based in London) & they put me forward as they knew I had the correct experience in starting a business & financing it.
We wanted to open the shop to encourage the local economy & have direct contact with our customers. A good percentage of orders are taken over the telephone as people want to speak with us & refine their requirements. With several exhibitions at London Excel, Earls Court & Birmingham NEC, the team really enjoyed the customer face to face interaction. The retail shop is an extension of this & also means an empty shop off the high street filled, which is of benefit to the local community. It is also local to our warehouse, so we now offer a click and collect service with a local van delivery service as well.
Why were you choosen in particular? Due to the strength of The Internet Retailer business growth over the last 12/24 months, the government really want to know how they can help and keep the momentum going for businesses like ours. What happened when you went? Meet anyone interesting? The group was full of similar people to myself so we all got on really well, we were with the MP Daniel Korski (Small Business Advisor to David Cameron). and we sat round a table at Number 10 for a couple of hours over coffee and all discussed openly what are the financing issues with small business are at the moment and the red tape. How have you built your internet business over the years to it’s current state? Just hard work! It might seem like the obvious answer, but I will have to say that it is most important you put in the effort to get results. Whilst I was doing my training to become a Chartered Accountant (Qualified in 2008), I would work 9-6 day and work • December 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
What reception has the new shop had so far locally? It has been really well received both from local customers and regional web customers who have come to visit/collect orders. We have even had people from London down to the shop to refine & discuss their purchasing requirements. What do you hope to achieve with the shop in the future? Once fully operational with sign & a few finishing touches, we hope that it will provide a complete lighting solution to both end users, local trades people & commercial requirements such as hotels & restaurants. The New TIR Lighting Store is now open at 1 High Street, Lewes Road (A22), Forest Row, RH18 5ES. Open Mon–Fri 7am–5pm, Sat 8am–1pm. For Discount Voucher See ad on page 11

The real St. Nicholas The real St. Nicholas (in Greek Nikólaos) was a 4th century Greek bishop, born in the ancient town of Patara in modern day Turkey. St. Nicholas later lived in Myra (not far from his birthplace) when the region was Greek in its heritage and culture. He was the only son of wealthy Christian parents. While St. Nicholas was still young, his parents died and he was raised by his uncle who was the bishop of his childhood town. Thus St. Nicholas began the journey to becoming a bishop himself. The most famous of St. Nicholas’ good deeds saw him helping a poor man who had three daughters, but could not afford a dowry for them. In those days it meant they would remain unmarried and likely have had to become prostitutes. Hearing of his plight, St. Nicholas decided to help, but saving them the humiliation of accepting

charity, he went to the house after dark and threw three purses (one for each daughter) filled with gold coins through the window opening into the house. With his reputation, it is no surprise that he came to represent the gift bearing associated with Christmas. As many miracles were attributed to him, he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. He has an undeniable influence on the mythical figure ‘Santa Claus’ which comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas, which itself is a corrupted version of Saint Nikolaos. Try saying both (with a Dutch accent if possible) and you will see they sound similar. According to research, Saint Nicholas was short, olive-skinned and had a broken nose. It was likely that he did sport white hair and a beard, as was the fashion for religious leaders of the day.

Local History Notes
A Brief History of Ashdown Park Ashdown Park was once part of the large area of the Ashdown Forest enclosed under the decree of 1693 and over the following century passed through the hands of several land speculators. The forest mansion house known here was built by either Thomas Bradford, who had Ashdown Park in 1815, or by Rear Admiral the Honourable Jacob Henniker who owned and occupied Ashdown Park from 1822. At the time the estate comprised 3563 acres and included Pippingford Park, Old Lodge and the army training ground. In 1867 Mr Thomas Charles Thompson, Member of Parliament for Durham, bought the estate. After purchase, he demolished the existing Henniker mansion, except possibly the cellars, and built the house which forms the central section of the building as it is now. The grounds were then laid out and some fine specimen trees planted. The stream, which originates near
Wych Cross, was dammed to make fords.
and is presently used as staff accommodation.
Being a philanthropist, Thompson employed a great many workers for his estate. Houses were built for his employees and a school which collectively formed a little ‘village’. As an example of his generosity he provided free lunches for the school children. The school closed in 1943
Thompson had three children, but sadly one died in infancy and another at eighteen, consequently he undertook to build the Church of St. Richard de Wych in their memory, to the east of the present estate. This also meant the residents could worship there and so save themselves the three mile trek to Hartfield. Unfortunately it fell into disrepair and vandals stripped the roof of lead and smashed the windows; it was thus demolished in the 1970’s. Mr Thomas Charles Thompson died in 1892 leaving in his will a black suit to each of his employees in order that they would be smartly dressed for his funeral. Ashdown Park was bequeathed to his daughter (his sole heir) who had married the vicar of Forest Row, George Carnack Fisher - the Fishers had lived in a house on the estate which is now the Roebuck Hotel, nearby Ashdown Park. in honour of Richard Towneley): the East Wing was completed in 1938. The church, consecrated in 1927, was particularly beautiful with marble from Italy, Switzerland and Sweden. The Stations of the Cross were sculpted in Bruges.
they had eight children and it was their son G K T Fisher who inherited the estate. He left it vacant in 1914 to join the war effort, becoming a Captain. During this time it was taken over by Lady Brassey who turned it, together with her own house at Chapelwood Manor, Chelwood Gate, into a hospital and convalescent home for Belgian army officers serving in the Great War. Sadly Captain Fisher was killed in Palestine in 1917 marking the end of his family’s connection to Ashdown Park. In 1918 the Oxcroft Colliery Company purchased the estate and felled most of the mature trees, which were used for pit props. Then in June 1919 the estate was once more put up for sale, and in July, Sister Marie Saint Agnes of the Order of the Notre Dame visited Ashdown Park and considered it ideal for convent purposes. Sister Marie had been born into the wealthy Towneley family of Burnley. She entered the Order of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Namur in Belgium in 1872 and stayed in Namur

until 1915 when she returned to England. In 1919 she was requested by the mother general to find a property suitable for a training establishment for the novices and was able to purchase Ashdown Park for the order quite cheaply as most of the trees had been felled. In the Spring of 1920 the first Sisters of Notre Dame, together with 33 novices, arrived at Ashdown Park. Although the house was too small for convent purposes, stone was quarried from the grounds and the extensions to the building were planned. The money for this venture was forthcoming from the Towneley estates (which were bequeathed to Sister Marie when her elder brother Richard died) and from the Honourable Mrs Edward Petre (formerly The Honourable Laura Stafford-Jerningham, the daughter of Lord Stafford) who on the early demise of her husband, joined the order and gave her large fortune to furtherance of Catholic education. In 1922 the West Wing was completed, the Church of Our Lady and St Richard (so called
Harry Clarke of Dublin designed and manufactured the sanctuary windows where 35 Shades of blue were used in addition to other colours. Geoffrey Webb of East Grinstead executed the stained glass windows in the Lady Chapel. The eight windows that Harry Clarke created for the former chapel are based on the life of the Virgin Mary. The tower window shows Mary surrounded by angels in a deep blue sky, it is signed Clarke Dublin. The other seven windows are signed J. Clarke & Sons, Dublin. The nuns remained happily at Ashdown Park for almost fifty years until the United States International University took over in 1971. The Roman Catholic Church deconsecrated the chapel, and the USIC renamed it The Anita Oliver Lunn Chapel. Mrs Lunn was a benefactress of the University and patroness of many American educational, cultural and scientific organisations. The University did not stay long and in 1974 Ashdown Park was conveyed to Barclays Bank for use as a Management Training Centre, which remained until being sold to its present owners on 1st February 1993. The grounds now consist of approximately 186 acres which is divided into 95 acres of landscaped woodland and 40 acres of grazing land where wild deer roam freely just as they always have in the Ashdown Forest.

Charity Challenge Jenny CarterVaughan, Managing Director of an Uckfield based business, has set herself the challenge of cycling from Vietnam to Cambodia to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Jenny set off on her adventure – which she herself is calling ‘Fat Bird on a Bike’ last month and was going to cover just over 550km in 12 days, cycling between 30 and 100km per day. The challenge was undertaken on a 21-speed mountain bike, fitted with semi-slick tyres. “The trip is about getting my confidence back,” said Jenny. “I was knocked off my bicycle by a white van man just over two years ago and I’m also overweight and want to do something about it. I have always wanted to cycle across Vietnam and Cambodia and I have decided that this is the ideal incentive to get me back on my bicycle and lose some weight at the same time.” Jenny is cycling in memory of her Father, Michael Church, who died from Leukaemia six years ago. “My Dad not only loved cycling, but also taught me how to ride a bike and ran behind me when the stabilisers came off,” says Jenny. “He will be the wind behind me, pushing me up hill when things get tough – as he was for his four best girls throughout his life.” Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only UK charity solely dedicated to research into blood cancers. “In the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the region, I can imagine that the journey might be even more challenging,” said Jenny. “I will certainly be thinking about those who have been touched by the devastating storm.” You can support Jenny’s charity challenge by visiting her Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/Jenny-Vaughan0 14 • December 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
Hair &Beauty By
Sue Harrison The Finishing Touch I am going to a party after work how can I style my hair to make it more glamorous for the evening? With the party season upon us a fabulous way of glamming up your hair is to invest in some velcro rollers which are great on long or short styles and some GHDs. Velcro rollers add volume and height and GHDs can create an amazing curl or wave. To use the rollers comb through your hair and take small sections especially around the crown area and top of the head. Spray each section with hairspray and wind down your roller from ends to roots so it sits nicely on the section, spray again and let your body heat do the rest. Go and have a cup of tea or chilled glass of wine and pop on your makeup then gently unwind the rollers. You can back comb to add more body and spritz with Glimmer Shine Spray by Moroccan Oil. The GHDs take a little more practice, mist the hair with Thermal Protector and wrap small sections around the plate and slide down releasing a curl. If it is a pre-planned evening, book in for a hair-up with your stylist for a wow factor!
How can I re-touch my day makeup for the evening? Evening makeup is more defined so freshen up with a dusting of Mineral Foundation over what you have on already and emphasise the cheek bones with a blusher starting on the ‘apple of the cheeks’ blending upwards and out. Add a light eyeshadow colour on the eye lids and a darker shade or colour on the outer corner and in the socket. Outline the eye with a dark brown or black eyeliner, define the eyebrows with the Cresty eyebrow kit and darker and lengthen the lashes with a mascara, finally apply a rich or darker colour lipstick than normal and top with gloss. Sue Harrison is an Independent Salon Advisor. If you would like your hair and beauty questions answered please email shhairandbeauty@gmail.com

Something Delicious Local Lindfield author Jill Walkinton and her co-author Alison Lewis have recently had their debut children’s book, ‘Something Delicious’ published by Egmont. Here is a ‘Q&A’ with ‘Jill Lewis’ (a combinations of both their names: Jill Walkinton & Alison Lewis): How did you come up with the idea for Something Delicious? We came up with the idea of the Little Somethings first. The book’s title happened a lot further down the line. We sometimes meet in cafes or similar to write together and, on this occasion, as we watched delicious looking cakes being delivered to nearby tables and one or other of us wondered whether we both might need ‘ a little something’ to eat! We then were quickly onto the play on words and the first 2 Little Somethings were born – the Miniwiggler and Skidaddler. Of course, the Big Somethings followed quite naturally. Something Delicious is the first book of ‘The Little Somethings’ series; Something Different follows at the very start of February and Something Missing in September next year. What was the process from idea to reality? Our stories always seem to evolve over time and this idea was no different – it wasn’t a quick process. We always appreciate Melissa Fairley’s (the editor at Egmont) guiding hand. We have written other books and the quirky ‘Don’t Read This Book’ took about 2 years to finalise and the end product was so different from the original concept. We can’t short circuit the long process – it’s just the way it is and something we need to go through. We have another book coming out at the end of April 2014 with Simon & Schuster – called Ug-a-Lug – a ridiculous story about four cavemen and a prehistoric pencil. This quirky idea must have been a nightmare for the clever illustrator – Simon Rickerty but somehow he’s managed to realise our story with fantastic pictures. Clever man!

As co-authors, how did you manage to work harmoniously? Our one maxim is friendship first and we have never lost sight of that. We have been friends for – dare we say it – 39 and three quarter years. We reserve Fridays for our writing together day and we have worked together for so long that we know each other’s style and speech rhythms – so no on can see the joins in our text. The fact is we never disagree about anything – as we think and ‘see’ a story in the same way. What has the reception been so far? Fabulous! We launched the book at Burgess Hill School for Girls and sold almost 100 books! The very next day we were at the Chiswick Book Festival and Waterstones came to sell books and ran out of copies; we had to sell our own to avoid disappointment! Since then, we have visited several other schools and the Just Imagine Story Centre in Essex. We have visits to more schools, bookshops and Literary Festivals in the diary for the remainder of this year and the start of next.

“I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ when I heard about it. The fact that it is delivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ashdown Forest area that are hard to reach. This was proved to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km driveway! I’ve had great results advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Building

Free School for the Weald A group of parents, grandparents and teachers with a passion for education have been inspired by the Free School movement to start an initiative that creates choice and diversity for state-funded education in Sussex. The group’s aim is to create a government supported free school with a Steiner Waldorf curriculum, for children aged from 4 to 16. The initiative has already generated interest from hundreds of parents and, if successful, aims to open its doors in September 2015. The proposed Steiner Academy Sussex Weald, will be part of a group of academies: state-funded schools that build on the ideas of Steiner education with a commitment to diversity and accessibility. The curriculum has been tried and tested in Steiner schools in the UK and all over the world since just after the First World War. In an inspiring and creative curriculum, all subjects including intellectual, physical and practical skills, are taught in ways that are appropriate and fulfilling to each child’s particular stage of development. Our vision is to produce free thinking school leavers who can achieve excellence in a wide range of skills. Interested parents and carers can find out more on the group’s website. www.steineracademysussexweald.com

Chocolate Yule Log Everyone in the family is sure to love this recipe at Christmas.
What to do: 1. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Line a 23x33cm/9x13 inch Swiss roll tin with greaseproof paper and brush this lightly with oil. 2. Combine the caster sugar and egg yolks in a bowl and whisk them together until light and thick. Melt the chocolate with 4tbsp cold water in a bowl over a pan of very gently simmering water. When you can see the chocolate has melted until smooth, stir it into the mixture.
Ingredients: • vegetable oil, for greasing • 150g/5½oz golden caster sugar • 6 large eggs, separated • 250g/9oz high quality dark chocolate (minimum 60 per cent cocoa solids)
Buttercream icing filling • 250g/9oz unsalted butter, softened • 450g/1lb golden icing sugar, plus extra for dusting • 50g/1¾oz cocoa powder, sifted • 2 tbsp milk
3. Whisk the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gently fold a spoonful at a time into the chocolate mixture, then gently fold in the remaining whites using a large spoon. Note: do not overmix. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for 12-14 minutes, until risen and just about firm to the touch. 4. Remove to a wire rack and leave to cool in the tin for at least 2 hours. 5. Once cold, lay a sheet of greaseproof paper on a board. Turn the whole cake onto the sheet of paper in one movement, then lift the tin off. Carefully peel away the paper and neaten up the edges by trimming. 6. To make the buttercream icing, beat the butter until soft, then sift in the icing sugar and cocoa. Add the milk and combine together until soft. Spread half the icing over the cake up to the edges. 7. Roll up starting at the side opposite you, use the paper to help roll the cake - don’t worry about cracks. Transfer to a flat serving dish. Carefully spread the remaining icing over the cake. Decorate festively (something for the kids to do perhaps) and sift over some icing sugar. Optionally you could use fresh whipped cream as filler, raspberries and even a dash of whisky.
‘Selfie’ is Crowned Word of the Year Meaning: a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website. Oxford Dictionaries Editors gave it the prestigious ‘award’ as its frequency of usage increased by 17,000% over the past 12 months! Apparently this new addition to our language can be traced back to a post on an Australian online forum in 2002: “Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.” Amazing the sources of our language in the 21st century!

Local Author’s True Story ‘It’s Alright Now God is in Charge’ is an inspiring true story of a family held together by courage and steadfast hope written by Frant resident and Burrswood Hospital volunteer, Patricia Cassidy. Here we publish an fascinating extract from the Chapter ‘Helter-Skelter’: My father was on the line, that much she realised, but all she could hear on the very poor connection, was the word, “NOW!” “What do you mean by ‘NOW’?” she enquired anxiously. Again, just the word “NOW!” came over, loud, insistent, and sounding extremely urgent. It was an appalling line! “Do you mean that you want us to come to Singapore now?” she asked, recognising the urgency in my father’s voice. The reply was an immediate, emphatic “YES!” - then the line went dead. Mother, praying hard, went thoughtfully out into the garden, and looked down at the golf course; to her amazement, she realised that there was no one to be seen! The course, usually so full of people either playing golf, or meeting one another with children skipping about, showed no sign of any life whatever. Just at that moment there was the sound of tyres on the gravel driveway as the little Austin 7 spun round the corner, Eileen and Kathleen had returned, and hurried breathlessly out of the car, pale with anxiety, saying, with near panic in their voices, “There are no Europeans left on the Hill, we should have gone too! Everyone else was evacuated early this morning! All the other people have gone long ago, by their own vehicles or buses, and lorries have already come to each house to collect all their possessions and luggage. We must all go immediately!” The words came tumbling out; they were both in a state of shock. They all realised that they must get away at once, but what could they do with just one small car? Eileen offered to take the six children to Kuala Lumpur. Mother, still praying constantly, hesitated for a moment, and decided that it would not be right to be parted from her children, and that, somehow, she and her twins would find their own way down from the Cameron Highlands. There was no time to argue, it was now known clearly that the Japanese Army had invaded Malaya and was rapidly making its way southwards. Mother, now in our bedroom, quietly packed a small cane suitcase with a few necessities. (I have often wondered just what these could have been?) Then seating herself in a wicker chair, she called Lindsey and myself to her, saying gently, “Darlings, we are in 24 • December 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
trouble and we really need God to help us. There is a promise that Jesus made that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. So we can all three ask for the Lord’s help now, and know he is hearing us, and will answer us.” And that is what we did. Praying together for God’s help for ourselves and for everyone else, at this moment made a big impact on both my sister and myself. I remember thinking, “ It’s alright now - God is in charge!” and feeling quite light-hearted and wonderfully peaceful! Mother took the little suitcase, and my father’s Burberry raincoat hanging on the back of the door, and suddenly decided to bring her very best hat. Eileen took the three of us to the hotel at Tanah Rata, before returning to the Bank Bungalows to collect the others for their long drive to Kuala Lumpur. We found it was eerily quiet at the hotel, there was no one about at all, just silence, apart from the sound of a few doors swinging on their hinges, all very strange indeed! There was no traffic, no movement anywhere, it seemed that everyone on the Hill had fled. Presently, still at the hotel, we thought we could hear the noise of a car engine away in the distance. As it was so completely quiet with no sign of life anywhere, the sound carried a long way, from much further up the Hill. Mother hurried us up to the side of the road with the suitcase, father’s raincoat and her hat, where we waited hopefully. And then we saw the car coming! I distinctly remember it was a dark green Ford. The driver looked incredulous, he stopped, and asked what on earth we were doing, and Mother rapidly explained the situation. He sprang out of the car and hastily removed much of his luggage to allow the three of us to get in. He told Mother that he had not been able to depart any earlier because he was suffering a malarial fever too badly to go immediately on receiving the phone-call ordering him to leave the Hill, and was now rushing to get to his Army Unit in Ipoh. He thought it would be best to take us to the station at Tapah, where he hoped we would be able to catch a train to the south. He was in a great hurry. The road was very twisty, and there was no time to take the corners gently. No one knew where the Japs were, they could appear on the road at any moment. He must have been an excellent driver, and managed to cope with those forty miles of continuous hairpin bends magnificently ; it was like racing down a Helter-Skelter! We arrived at Tapah Station and this wonderful man (an answer to our prayers?) left us there to dash away

to his Army Unit. I often wondered what happened to him. We managed to get onto the station platform, pushed to the edge because it was crowded - crowded with the people who had left Cameron Highlands so early that morning! Their luggage was piled up in heaps, and they were still waiting wearily for a train which never seemed to come! Then, just as we had arrived a train was heard coming, steaming and snorting, into the station. Pandemonium broke out. Everyone tried to rush on board at once with their baggage; the train was already overcrowded.
Noise! Confusion! A window opened right in front of where we were standing, and, before we knew quite what was happening, my sister and I were hauled aboard through the window by the strong arms belonging to some nuns! Their voices shouted in unison, “We must have the children’s mother!” and Mother was swiftly pulled in through the door! Her book can be bought at Burrswood Hospital Bookshop, all good bookshops and also on Amazon. It is published by ‘Onwards and Upwards’.

Fallen trees for Feeding In the aftermath of the recent windy weather, wildlife conservationists are encouraging people not to tidy up too much. Where it is safe to do so, leaving fallen and leaning trees or broken and snagged branches can provide valuable homes & sustenance for wildlife. Recent work by Butterfly Conservation, Sussex Wildlife Trust and the RSPB to replicate these conditions has shown how such an approach can be successful. do so, we would urge people to leave these branches in situ. This is a natural process that some specialist insects, such as the Olive Crescent moth, need to complete their life cycle.”
At nature reserves in Broadwater Forest, north of Ashdown Forest, staff and volunteers have been cutting branches and then tying them up in the tree so that the leaves go brown and wither. Returning four months later with a colleague from Butterfly Conservation, they found caterpillars of the rare Olive Crescent moth amongst the withered leaves.
Tony Davis of Butterfly Conservation, said: “This caterpillar feeds amongst dry, dead leaves of Oak and Beech. It doesn’t sound like much of a diet, but it ensures they are dry, sheltered and away from ground-based predators such as wood ants.”
Steve Wheatley, RSPB Broadwater Warren site manager, said: “The normal instinct is to remove and clear away fallen timber and broken or snagged branches from tree. However where it is safe to

Christmas can be a tough time of the year for some people, especially those without work and where it is a challenge to make ends meet. Of course, it is also a time of celebration for families and friends as well as the giving and receiving of presents. This will be the first Christmas where Uckfield Foodbank will be open and while we have a tremendous 3,644 kg of food collected so far and available for distribution, we do please need your help. We have a dedicated and growing team of volunteers, who are equally good ambassadors, spreading the word and yet, we do need everyone to be aware of us. 28 • December 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
As trees reach old age, hollow trunks and dead branches all start to make these “veteran” trees more interesting as habitats for wildlife.
So please do signpost anyone you may know who is in need to the Citizens’ Advice Bureau in Uckfield; they are able to issue Foodbank vouchers that can be exchanged at our distribution centre, Grange Road. Food donations from our published list, can be left in collection boxes at The Bargain Store, 94B High Street, and The Lord’s Vineyard, 102 High Street, Uckfield, and at both Buxted and Bird-in-Eye medical practices. If you are interested in volunteering please call 01825 745489 or email: admin@uckfield. foodbank.org.uk. Thank you.

Three Wise Men Three Wise Men or Kings are collectively called the ‘Magi’ and were a group of distinguished scholars who visited Jesus after his birth, bearing, as we all know gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They were the first religious figures to worship Jesus. In fact the account does not mention the number of people “they” or “the Magi” refers to, it has been assumed it was three wise men because three gifts are mentioned. In the East, however, the Magi traditionally number twelve. They are often thought of as kings, due to Psalms 72:11, “May all kings fall down before him”. They are thought to be Melchior, a Persian scholar; Caspar, an Indian scholar and Balthazar (also Balthasar, Balthassar, and Bithisarea), an Arabian scholar.
The Magi are described as “falling down”, “kneeling” or “bowing” in the worship of Jesus. Inspired by these verses, kneeling and prostration were adopted by the early church. This gesture had an important effect on Christian practices and even influenced secular life. As we know kneeling, etc. is indicative of great respect, and typically used when venerating royalty and suchlike. In modern day full prostration is now rarely practised yet kneeling has remained an important element of Christian worship. Their visit is commemorated in most Western Christian churches by the observance of Epiphany, 6th January. The Eastern Orthodox celebrate the visit of the Magi on 25th December.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. A Mothers Quote of the month
“It’s true, Christmas can feel like a lot of work, particularly for mothers. But when you look back on all the Christmases in your life, you’ll find you’ve created family traditions and lasting memories. Those memories, good and bad, are really what help to keep a family together over the long haul.” Caroline Kennedy
Tips for Baby & Child Swimming 1.Introduce your child to the water gently and slowly; they will go through phases of their development when they are more confidant in the water and then less so. Don’t assume they will be as confidant as the last time they were in water.
important that the child learns their own buoyancy in the water in a safe environment i.e. with mum or dad. One you’ve introduced the swimming aids it can be very difficult to get rid of them.
2.Any number of things can affect their mood and willingness to get in the water: water temperature will have a massive impact on their responses. If you take them swimming in a warm pool and then jump into the sea, don’t be surprised if they don’t like it.
4.Take care when submerging a child. Never submerge a child that doesn’t want to be submerged even if they’ve been happy to do it in the past. It’s generally better to let children from 2 upwards initiate their own little submersion by doing little jumps (seated or standing) into the water – with mum or dad’s help of course.
3.Fixed flotation such as rubber rings and armbands should generally be avoided because it’s more

The 118-foot tall giant redwood at Wakehurst Place, in Ardingly, has a new set of 1,800 festive low-energy lights on string that measures 600 metres! Tree climbers from Wakehurst’s conservation team rigged them up last month using specialist climbing equipment and two high-level platforms. The tree will no doubt have to endure some harsh weather this winter and will be rigged up until 6th January. Being new, the lights will look brighter than ever this year and so it’s well worth a Christmas outing to Wakehurst.

Holly & Ivy Holly and ivy have been the mainstay of English Christmas decoration for churches since at least the fifteenth century, when it was often mentioned in church records. However, these evergreens had been used as winter decoration long before the arrival of Christianity. During the winter solstice festival ancient celts fashioned ivy into wreaths and garlands for decorations. The Romans viewed it as having close ties with the Roman god of wine, Bacchus (Dionysus). The fact that ivy stayed green throughout the year led some to believe it had magical properties so it became a symbol of eternal life, rebirth and the coming spring season.
early Christians as Christmas decorations in the Roman times, despite the likely disapproval of church leaders, who would have regarded the decorations as pagan. Nonetheless these evergreens were well on their way to becoming a staple of Christmas tradition.
Holly was prominent in the Roman celebration of Saturnalia (upon which the Christmas holiday was supposedly modelled), as the plant was considered sacred to Saturn. In Norse mythology, it was associated with Thor, god of thunder, and holly plants grown by the home were thought to prevent lightning strikes.
We all know the traditional English Christmas carol, ‘The Holly and the Ivy’, the imagery of which firmly cements their place in the Christian message.
Holly and ivy were both an understandable choice of decoration for bringing hope and cheer during wintertime. With almost all of nature dormant, these evergreens yet remain and people could be reminded of better times to come - if they could steel themselves to survive the harsh winter!
Symbolically, the prickly leaves of holly came to represent the crown of thorns; the berries, drops of blood that were shed by Jesus.
A a final word, later in the fifteenth century Henry VIII referred to holly and ivy’s everlasting quality in a love song attributed to him: (Extract)
Green groweth the holly, so doth the ivy. Though winter blasts blow never so high, Green groweth the holly. As the holly groweth green And never changeth hue, So I am, and ever hath been, Unto my lady true. Green groweth . . . (We might add that this lovely ditty was written in the King’s younger years, it is perhaps questionable whether his still had such sentiments in the latter part of his life...) Without doubt, these evergreens have earned their place in our traditions, appearing as varying symbols and guises over hundreds of years.
Both plants were thus adopted by
