Flat roof repairs

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Christmas Pomanders The pomander became popular during the Middle Ages when the black death and other ailments were widespread. Sanitation during the era was lacking to say the least; the streets and often homes were strewn with filth. People thought that the cause of their problems lay in the resulting stench lingering about the city. They believed that the pleasant scent of a pomander would repel the disease in the air. The Elite Classes took to wearing pomanders and it soon became a ‘fashion accessory’. Queen Elizabeth I was frequently depicted wearing one, as were other nobles day. These scented pomanders ranged from simple ones which were made of wood to stunning examples worked in silver or gold, studded with precious stones, and etched with intricate designs. Some pomanders were divided into sections, similar to an orange, into which several scents were placed. By the 17th and 18th century, however, a pomader was more often than not a decorated orange studded with cloves. It started to be mentioned as a Christmas or New Years custom; for instance in his Christmas masque, Ben Jonson wrote, “He has an orange and rosemary, but not a clove to stick in it.” A later description of New Year’s mentions children carrying pippins (apple variety) and oranges stuck with cloves in order to crave a blessing form their godfathers and godmothers. In Medieval times some pomanders were made from a paste which usually contained ambergris (a wax-like substance previously used in perfume 6 • December 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

manufacture) which was rolled into an apple shape. Thus the term, “pomme ambre” (amber (gris) apple) was formed and from there the anglicized version of the word came about: pomander.

you wish, leave enough ribbon to be able to hang up. Alternatively you can thread a large needle with string and run it through the orange; making a knot at the bottom.

Want to make your own? Here are some simple steps to brings some gorgeous seasonal scents of Christmas into your home.

Insert the cloves; to make it easier use a toothpick or skewer to lightly pierce the skin. Make holes in vertical lines around the orange or you may choose to make patterns instead. Your cloves should be close but not touching, aim to cover as completely as possible.

You can hang pomanders in doorways, mantelpieces, on your Christmas tree or simply place several in a bowl. You will need • • • •

An orange Sewer or toothpick Ribbon. 1-2 ounces of cloves.

Cross-tie the ribbon around the orange: center ribbon on the top of the orange, hold ribbon in place and turn orange over, cross the ribbon and pull it tight against the orange put a pin in to secure the ribbon, turn orange over and bring ribbon together at top, either tie a knot or tie in a bow. If

Optional: for a stronger, richer aroma, you can then roll the orange in a mixture of spices: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg, 1 tablespoon allspice. Place everything in a paper bag or tissue paper and leave the orange in this mix for a week, turning once a day. Leave the bag in a dark, dry place. They also make a simple, lovely Christmas gift.

LOCAL HISTORY NOTES

The Chamberlain political dynasty in the local area by Dorothy Hatswell Joseph Chamberlain, father of Austen and Neville Chamberlain, was born in Birmingham. He was a wellknown industrialist having joined his uncle’s firm, Nettlefold & Chamberlain, screw manufacturers. He became Mayor of Birmingham and later became an M.P. His first wife, Harriet Kenrick died giving birth to his son, Austen. For twenty five years Joseph was on very distant terms with his son, apparently blaming him for his mother’s death. Five years later, in spite of his lingering grief at the death of his first wife, Joseph married her cousin, Florence Kenrick. By her he had another son Neville, and three daughters. Unfortunately, Florence also died in childbirth in 1875, having what would have been their fifth child, who sadly died at same time. Joseph then married Edith Endicott in 1888 in Washington D.C. She was the daughter of William Crowninshield Endicott, US Secretary of War. Austen followed his father into Parliament. His father later said that Austen had been “born in a red dispatch box”. His abilities were soon recognised by William Gladstone, who was Prime Minister at the time, and made Austen President of the Board of Trade. Austen became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1919 and made a very unpopular budget owing to the money that had been spent on the war. He was the Foreign Secretary in 1925 when he negotiated the Locarno Treaty to try to consolidate the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which had ended the First World War, seven years earlier. For his efforts he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize that year. Austen married Ivy Muriel Dundas, a distant relative of Admiral Dundas, in 1906. Their oldest child, Joseph Austen Chamberlain was born in March 1908. He appears in the 1911 census lodging at 34, Earls Avenue, Folkstone with two nurses. As his parents do not appear anywhere in the census for that year, it would seem that they were abroad. Joseph was followed in 1912 by Beatrice Diane and then by Lawrence Endicott in 1917. Lawrence in 1919, Thornhill is in the background named their second son after Austen’s stepmother underlines their close relationship. Lawrence was born prematurely, weighing only 3lbs 12oz and his life was in the balance for two or three weeks; though happily, he recovered. During the First World War, Austen moved his family to Thornhill, on the Ashurst Wood and Forest Row border. He did this because of his fear that they could be bombed by the Germans who were carrying out constant air raids in London. They moved there in 1916 and stayed for three years. The choice of this location may have been due to the fact that he knew the area. His personal private secretary, Oliver Locker Lampson, lived at Rowfant and Austen sometimes stayed with him. Austen also noted to have written letters from Barton St Mary’s on the Holtye Road, E. Grinstead. Thornhill, the house he let, belonged to Magens Dorien Magens an important landowner who resided at Kidbrooke Park, Forest Row. He had formerly rented it out to Dowager Lady Sheffield, of the Abergavenny family who were again rich, aristocratic landowners, well known in the local area. The Abergavennys happened to be distant relatives by marriage of the Chamberlains, which is possibly how Austen came to know about the house in the first place. The Chamberlains by all accounts enjoyed their stay at Thornhill. 10 • December 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

AF-Living-Dec14.indd 10

In 1919 Austen’s family moved to Twytt’s Ghyll, Fir Toll Road, Mayfield, “A pretty place with a lovely view, just what Ivy has always dreamed of.” It was here that Austen was able to enjoy his passion for alpines.

S

Austen’s half brother, Neville, also followed his father into the House of Commons. He was elected to Parliament in 1918. He became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1923 and held other ministerial posts. In 1937 when Baldwin resigned as leader of the Conservative Party following the abdication of Edward VII, Chamberlain became Prime Minister. Austen had died just three months earlier and so did not see the only one of the family to achieve this high office. Neville went to Munich to negotiate with Adolph Hitler and came back waving an agreement which he thought promised “Peace in our Time.” He had also entered into an alliance with Poland saying we would support them if necessary. This meant that, when Hitler invaded Poland on September 1st 1939, England were forced to declare war on Germany two days later when Hitler would not withdraw his troops.

H

Neville Chamberlain resigned in May 1940 so that a coalition government could be formed. Winston Churchill took over as Prime Minister and Chamberlain served on the War Committee. He died of cancer only six months later.

NEW SHOP

Here is a ‘Q&A’ with Sonya Leggett MRCVS, the proprietor of the newly open shop, Ziggy’s Pet Supplies of Forest Row. Her mission? to keep your pet healthy through good food and nutrition: What is your background, what training/ qualifications do you have? I have always been passionate about animals and wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember but life sometimes doesn’t go according to plan! So I studied a BSc (Hons) degree in Pathobiology which is the study of disease mechanism. I did well and got a research grant from the Wellcome Foundation to do my PhD. I then worked for a few years as a research scientist studying the immunology involved in disease processes and vaccinations for various infectious diseases. Having become restless, I was lucky enough to be accepted at last at the Royal Veterinary College, London where I qualified as a veterinary surgeon. After a few years in veterinary practice I was not satisfied with the tools that we had to offer and so explored homeopathy and studied that for 4 years before taking the VetMFHom examination. I now work as a vet able to offer both conventional and/or alternative treatment for their pets. What inspired you to set up this new business, what were your reasons? I have always wanted and believed that as a vet, I really shouldn’t be seeing my patients on a regular basis, my aim has always been to get them healthy and for them to stay healthy. I am passionate about food quality and production and have been a lifelong supporter of CIWF (Compassion in World Farming). I truly believe you are what you eat, be you human or animal. For a lot of my clients, when I change their pets diet, this is all that is needed to restore the animal to optimal health. This led me to having the idea of a shop that sold food that I would be happy recommending, along with supplements, and other quality pet products. It’s been a huge learning curve so far and a lot of fun, happily I’ve met some really committed suppliers and producers who think the same way.

What has the local response been so far? People have been very interested as the shop was empty for ages before we took it over. Forest Row is a very close knit community and many local people have popped their head around the door while we have been refurbishing to ask what is was going to be and expressed their delight that he shop will be open again having not been in use for quite some years. For more information see the ad below.

NEW TO FOREST ROW Situated on the A22 and adjacent to Tesco Express, Ziggy’s is a new venture for Dr Sonya Leggett MRCVS and her husband John. Sonya practices holistic veterinary medicine and her career has led her to the conclusion that many ailments in our pets are a direct result of poor nutrition. Ziggy’s specialise in the best, high quality foods including raw, wet and dry foods for dogs and cats, which come from ethically farmed animals. Ziggy’s also caters for other domestic pets ranging from rabbits to mice, chickens and wild birds etc. In addition Ziggy’s stocks wonderful toys, treats, accessories and supplements for your pet.

RICH MINCE PIES Also perfect as a gift for friends. Makes: 12

INGREDIENTS: • 300g plain flour • 75g butter, diced • 75g white fat (or butter) diced • 410g jar Mincemeat • 2 tbsp milk • 1 medium egg yolk • Caster sugar for sprinkling, or icing sugar • A pinch of cinnamon for dusting

WHAT TO DO: 1. Sieve the flour into a large mixing bowl, then lightly rub in the butter and/or fat, until it looks like fine breadcrumbs. Sprinkle 2 tbsp cold water into the mixture, then mix with a round-bladed knife until a dough starts to form. Draw the mixture together with your hands until it makes a rough ball. If it is too dry, add a few drops of water, taking care not to make the dough wet and sticky. Wrap in clingfilm and chill for at least 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured work surface, until it is about 3mm thick. Cut out 12 pastry discs using a 8cm fluted cutter, then 12 small discs using a 6cm fluted cutter. Line a 12-hole bun tin with the larger discs. 3. Using a teaspoon, fill the lined tin with mincemeat. Dampen the edges of the small pastry discs on one side by brushing them with a little cold water. Gently press the small discs, damp side down, on top of the filled pastry bottoms and seal the edges. 4. Whisk the milk into the egg yolk to make a glaze. Brush this glaze on the top of each mince pie. Prick the lids with a fork to allow the steam to escape while cooking. 5. Place into the oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool for 4-5 minutes in the tray before transferring to a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar and a pinch of cinnamon.

Did you know.....? •

Early illustrations of St. Nicholas make him out to be a stern symbol of discipline rather than the jolly, rotund character we know today.

Nearly all of the most popular Christmas songs including ‘Winter Wonderland’, ‘Chestnuts roasting…’, and ‘I’m Dreaming of a white Christmas’ were written by Jewish people.

An artificial Christmas tree would have to be reused for more than 20 years to be “greener” than buying a fresh-cut tree annually.

We frequently abbreviate Christmas as X-mas because of ancient tradition. X is the Greek letter “chi” which is an abbreviation for the word “Christ” in Greek.

Some Japanese people traditionally eat at KFC for Christmas dinner, thanks to a successful marketing campaign 40 years ago. KFC is so popular that customers must place their Christmas orders 2 months in advance.

Sussex Health Care’s Brand New Facility The Award Winning, Sussex Health Care Group are excited to announce the opening of their brand new purpose built care facilities at Rapkyns Care Centre, Broadbridge Health, nr. Horsham. The facilities are comprised of two buildings, each purpose-built, consisting of four 10 bedded units. These are specifically for clients with acquired brain injury and neurological conditions as well as for people with autism or young people leaving school or college with profound learning and physical disabilities. These buildings bring a exciting new service to potential clients which include all the latest technologies and also provides residential, respite and outreach placements. Within the grounds, there is a brand new gymnasium facility which provides equal opportunities and access regardless of the service user’s ability or health status. Providing the right support to enable service users to train in a safe and highly effective manner. Whether it is to work on strength, fitness or just increase general health, service users will receive all the help and motivation to help them achieve their goal. What’s more, this service is available to people within the local community as well as for people who are living in a residential setting or at home seeking a private outreach service. Sussex Health Cares enthusiasm for the latest high-tech, interactive technology systems are of a strong focal point. New interactive technology systems have been installed, whereby service users are encouraged to make choices which can involve number games, pictorial and floor games. All of which are fantastic sensory learning tools that have the capacity to engage the service users and are suitable for any ability. Whether the choice is to play

individually or interact with one another in a group, the systems can be controlled by simply moving on or over the projected image or by using their eyes as a mouse. Testimonials: “One adult in particular surprised us all. We had no idea how cognitively able he was, it is hard to get much response from him, but when we introduced him to the eye gaze straight away he realized he was controlling it by himself. He got through a lot of the games quickly! He was deliberately closing his eyes to stop the game and starting again, teasing us! It was a very emotional day for us.” - Unit Manager The team at Rapkyns Care Centre are genuinely passionate about the people in their care and their wellbeing is always at the centre of everything they do. As well as the use of the above new services, service users attend social outings and outreach services with the help and support of the homes dedicated mini bus service. Arts, Crafts and Cooking seem to be one of the many popular activities along with the strong emphasis around community presence. Rapkyns Care Centre has

the added benefit of a beautiful and diverse landscape, which clients are encouraged to explore and utilise as stimulation for their creative projects. The sessions are intended to trigger the learning of new skills or improve those they already have. Sussex Health Care is committed to genuine inclusion for people of any ability. Having achieved accreditation for 2014, Investors in People Standards (IIP), the group operates with professionalism and excellence, with over 25 years of healthcare in Sussex, offering a range of quality person-centred services.

Pooh’s Ponderings

 “Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.”  “If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.”  “Weeds are flowers, too, once you get to know them.”

Words of Wisdom for the holiday season, from our favourite little star of Ashdown Forest, Winnie-the-Pooh.

 “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”

 Piglet: “How do you spell ‘love’?” Pooh: “You don’t spell it...you feel it.”

 “You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.”

 “You are braver than you believe. Stronger than you seem. And smarter than you think.”

 “Promise me you’ll never forget me because if I thought you would, I’d never leave.”

 “The things that make me different are the things that make me.”

 “A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.”  “A day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside.”

 “If the person you are talking to does not appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in this ear.”

 “Love is taking a few steps backward, maybe even more… to give way to the happiness of the person you love.”

 “If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together keep me in your heart. I’ll stay there forever.”

 “A day spent with you is my favourite day. So today is my new favourite day.”

 “Sometimes the smallest things take the most room in your heart.”

 “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

 “Some people care too much. I think it’s called love.”

Words of wisdom from a cuddly bear. Thank you, Pooh!

Quote Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childhood days, recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home!

The Film, ‘McIndoe’ has been chosen as part of the final line-up selected for Brighton Festival’s Cincity. Help the birds this Winter Once the temperature drops and the food runs out birds will start coming back to gardens looking for some extra help to keep warm. Many small birds die of cold over the winter months. By putting out a little extra food you can really help them out and you get the added bonus of being able to enjoy watching these amazing animals close up and personal. Top feeding tips: 1. Don’t give too much. Amounts provided should allow for rapid turnover to reduce the chance of food becoming mouldy or contaminated. 2. Natural foods are best but in cold weather good leftovers with a high fat content such as bacon rind, grated cheese, cooked rice and pasta will be beneficial. 3. Don’t put out salted nuts, desiccated coconut, highly spiced food or very dry bread. 4. Food that has been contaminated with bird droppings and saliva can be a reservoir for some diseases that affect birds so clean your bird feeder, table and bath regularly with boiling water and disinfectant.

A Christmas Carol (an extract)

5. Always wear gloves when cleaning your feeders. Brushes and equipment used for cleaning bird feeders should not be used for other purposes and should be kept and used outside. 6. Some birds die in cold weather due to dehydration as water in bird baths freeze so please remember to put out fresh water everyday.

Blue tit and great tit feeding / Alan Price

7. Supplementary feeding can never provide all the natural proteins and vitamins that birds need so try to also include natural food sources in your garden. Why not plant a native hedgerow or a couple of fruit trees? Let your plants go to seed and don’t prune shrubs until late in winter... Food for thought. Now all our neighbours’ chimneys smoke, And Christmas blocks are burning; Their ovens they with bak’d-meats choke, And all their spits are turning. Without the door let sorrow lie, And if for cold it hap to die, We’ll bury ’t in a Christmas pie, And evermore be merry. 24 • December 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

So now is come our joyful’st feast, Let every man be jolly. Each room with ivy leaves is drest, And every post with holly. Though some churls at our mirth repine, Round your foreheads garlands twine, Drown sorrow in a cup of wine, And let us all be merry.

Mothers’ quote It’s true, Christmas can feel like a lot of work, particularly for mothers. But when you look back on all the Christmases in your life, you’ll find you’ve created family traditions and lasting memories. Those memories, good and bad, are really what help to keep a family together over the long haul.

The Finishing Touch Hair & Beauty

Girls with curls

Everyone wants to try the curly look once in a while and the good news is, whether wavy or straight, a head full of spiralling locks can be yours. When styling curly hair do not over-dry. The best option to drying curly hair is to use a diffuser on the coolest setting or to allow the hair to dry naturally. Break curls with the fingers to create shape and avoid brushing or combing the curls out. Often just shaking the hair will create the best looking shape and style. If your waves are on the limp side then give them a bouncy boost. Even if you have perfectly coiffed curls at the start of the day, they can fall flat by the time you’ve nipped out for a lunchtime sandwich. Start by applying a curling cream to the hair from roots to ends, separating hair and twisting the hair around your fingers to define the hair into individual curls. Fringe benefits The fringe comes in many guises, from blunt cut bold bangs to long sweeping peekaboo fringes. The beauty of the fringe is that it’s completely versatile and can suit different hair lengths, colours and even thickness. If you’re feeling adventurous, go all out with a full and heavy statement fringe. Fuller fringes make foreheads 28 • December 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

AF-Living-Dec14.indd 28

look smaller and the bottom of your face appear narrower - ideal for round or Christmas heart shaped faces. Perfect Vouchers are teamed with a strong now available colour. This style works best from Finishing with straight teased hair. Touch. An eye skimming fringe will instantly transform a long face making it appear miraculously shorter. The peekaboo fringe is a super sexy look as it covers or completely falls over one eye ideally in a long voluptuous wave. There’s nothing sexier than an eye tickling fringe with a beautiful pair of eyes peeping through the hair. Flushed cheeks To achieve perfectly pink cheeks, think natural. Add a little colour to your cheeks in a shade you would naturally flush for a natural looking glow witch is ultra sexy and highly attractive. If you have a special date avoid heavily blushed cheeks. I always favour a fluid or cream blush for a barely finish. You can really work colour into the cheeks with the warmth of your fingertips to the areas witch you would naturally gain colour.

Think Charity this Christmas

Locally based Philippa Jacobs recently set up a charity, the response from the community has been amazing so far. Here is a ‘Q&A’ with her:

What is the mission of your charity? Although most schools in Tanzania are underresourced it would be impossible to make a lasting difference to them all. The charity hopes to make a sustainable and lasting difference to the few hundred children that attend Chanzige school and concentrate on projects that will benefit the local community as well as the children at the school.

What inspired you to start this locally based charity? In Oct 2012 my 17 year old son, George visited Chanzige primary school as part of a sixth form project. On his return I was particularly interested to hear about this part of his trip. I was made redundant in July 2013 and took a few months off work. I went to Tanzania to see for myself and was horrifed by the lack of resources. There is nothing on the walls in the classrooms, three children share one small desk, there are 50 children to each class, they share basic

resources such as pencils and rulers. Their library could only be described as pathetic and the teachers struggled to administer the required curriculum due to a shortage of text books. The children have to provide their own exercise books, for some families this is quite a challenge. I had taken some books with me, I watched a child look at the front cover of a children’s atlas for a full two minutes before he even turned to look inside. Children in the UK would have given that book a cursory glance! Regardless of the challenges these children face they are the happiest, most welcoming individuals I have ever met. They consider an education a privilege and work astonishingly hard to reach their goals. It was very easy to be inspired by these astonishing young people!

How has it gone so far? Far better than I could ever imagine! The charity got it’s official HMRC status in Jan this year. Since then we have been able to provide the school with a completely refurbished classroom. This included electricity (there was none at the school before), a new floor, painting and decorating, shelving, new furniture and with the help of an organisation called Meetings Industry Meeting Needs (MIMN) we provided the classroom with six new PCs. This classroom has also become a community learning centre in the evenings. As well as this we have replaced all the black boards with write on wipe off white boards. We have given them 100 A4 whiteboards, this has meant that

the precious exercise books can be kept for ‘best work’. The teaching staff have also said that the white boards have given the children a renewed enthusiasm and they are able to teach more effectively and at a greater pace. I have been to various local schools and talked to children about the difficulties their counterparts face. This has resulted in a donation of 400 books, 400 pencil cases and a beautiful hand made blanket, all of which are now in place at the school. We also managed to replenish the Swahili section of their library with 100 new books.

What do you hope to accomplish in the near future? When we visited in October we were horrified to find that the school had had no clean drinking water since July. Their antiquated rainwater harvesting system had been vandalised and the rest was worn out. As a temporary measure we paid for water to be delivered. However, we are now trying to raise sufficient funds to provide the school with a modern, clean and sustainable system.

What has the local response been? Astonishing! The response has been truly amazing. Friends and family have been so supportive and as time goes on I am finding that complete strangers are offering their support.

How has it affected you on a personal level? I had never given any thought to doing charity work, although I used to give a regular donation to a couple of bigger charities. However I have found this is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. My children are now at university so although I work part time I am able to dedicate quite a considerable amount of time to the charity. This is something that gives me so much pleasure I would recommend it to everyone! There is a fundraising quiz at Escots school, East Grinstead on the 5th of Dec at 7:30pm. The not-so-wholesome Greek Christmas Elves Elves invoke thoughts of ever-friendly, ever-joyful, hard-working Santa’s helpers. However in Greece it’s quite the opposite; their Christmas elves called, Kallikántzari, are more like hobgoblins which frankly hail from the ‘dark-side’. They surface on Earth only during the 12-day period from Christmas to Epiphany (January 6th), just after the winter solstice during which time the sun has ceased its seasonal movement. They have been variously imagined but many Greeks think of them as tall, black, hairy, with burning red eyes, goats’ or donkeys’ ears, monkeys’ arms, tongues that hang and heads that are huge! According to Greek legend, these creatures dwell in the centre of the earth, where their mission is to chop at the huge ‘world tree’ which symbolises Earth’s foundations so it will collapse along with Earth. When they are about to finish their toils Christmas arrives, they forget the tree and are able to come to the surface to spread their mischief. Apparently while they are on the rampage they hide in people’s houses slipping down the chimney, overturn furniture, devour Christmas foods, 32 • December 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

contaminate water, among other naughty antics. Throughout Greece, numerous rituals are performed to keep them away. One way of deterring the Kallikantzaro would be to leave a colander on your doorstep to trick them. Since they must not count above 2 (3 is a holy number and by pronouncing it, they kill themselves) they end up sitting at the doorstep counting, 1, 2... 1, 2... each hole of the colander, all night, until the sun rises and they are forced to hide again. Some houses sprinkle holy water in each room to deter these pests. Finally, on the Epiphany, the sun starts moving again, and they must go underground again to continue their sawing. To their frustration, they see that during their absence the World Tree has healed itself, so they must start all over again.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you December think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. A Lindfield Woman’s View of World War 2 Two Lindfield historians have published for the first time, the exceptional personal diary of Helena Hall, depicting life on the Home Front during the Second World War. Linda Grace and Margaret Nicolle came to know about the journal through research for a local exhibition. They subsequently decided to return to the Record Office to explore it in more depth and were inspired to write their book as the journal is so distinctive and has much to offer the reader today. They will be launching ‘A Woman Living in the Shadow of the Second World War’ at King Edward Hall, Lindfield, on 3rd December at 7:15pm, also giving selected readings with illustrations, followed by a Q&A session, with signed copies available to buy. All are welcome to attend and tickets are available for £2.50 each from SWALK and Tuffnells Home on Lindfield High Street. Here is a brief ‘Q&A’ about the book: What brought you to wish to publish the diary of Helena Hall? Why was it so special? When researching the diaries we were very quickly convinced that they were unique. The journal consists of a mixture of personal

experiences, accounts from family, friends and acquaintances, as well as written reports taken from local and national newspapers, and radio news broadcasts. In addition, a key feature of the journal is the inclusion of material that illustrates and complements the written entries. This includes newspaper cuttings, letters, stamps, greetings cards, leaflets and other items of interest such as a ration book.

Miss Hall recorded her personal experiences and activities, including work as an Air Raid Warden, alongside national and international events. Through this, it is possible to gain an insight into the extraordinary impact of the conflict on local lives and shows the energy and commitment of local people to the war effort. The many sessions we spent in the East Sussex Records Office made us feel that we had come to appreciate Miss Hall’s style, personality, enthusiasm and commitment. We felt privileged to have had a window into her war-time life, and wanted to be able to communicate the magnitude of her achievement to others. Our aim has been to share Miss Hall’s war through her own words. We hope our readers will experience the events described as both a historical record and a shared and participatory experience with an impressive personality.

In brief, what process did you have to undertake to bring it to publication? The diaries consist of over 4,700 handwritten pages. We had to decide how to edit this amount of material into a single volume of work. We decided to include entries which refer to her personal experiences and to retain as much variety, character and immediacy as possible. More detailed references of the Battle of Britain, the war between Russia and Germany on the Eastern Front and from D Day onwards were chosen for inclusion. Images which may not have been viewed since the day they were published in their respective newspapers were included. We sent an early draft of the journal to Dr Peter Liddle, Life President of the Second World War Experience Centre in Leeds and he was so impressed by it that he recommended us to approach Pen

and Sword Books Ltd who agreed to publish it. What has the local response been? The local response has been very gratifying with significant initial interest in buying copies of the book. Local shops and businesses have expressed real interest in our work and most have offered to display a poster and/or flyers (see copy attached) to advertise our book launch on December 3rd.

CROWBOROUGH LIONS CLUB Crowborough & District Lion’s Club was formed in 1974, with 40 years servicing the local community and raising funds for charitable causes, and to continue this work we require new members male or female, so if you could spare the time to meet like minded people we would be pleased to hear from you. Our fundraising event involves a Easter egg raffle, Darts Marathon, through pubs and clubs, fetes and fairs, local hospital fete, Christmas carol float, annual quiz and many more. We help individual cases both young and old, and make donations to groups e.g. girl guides, sports clubs for the young, 100 senior citizens for Christmas lunch and many more. Our varied social programme includes theatre trips, country, dinner and dances, etc. 36 • December 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

Wassailing Wassailing is therarely seen custom of going door-to-door singing Christmas carols, it hails from ancient, AngloSaxon times. It was often done in exchange for good cheer in the form of seasonal food and drink. The word ‘wassail’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase ‘waes hael’, meaning “be thou hale” — i.e., “be in good health”.

Although wassailing is now viewed as an olden-day, joy-bringing activity, it was not always considered so innocent. Wassailing was sometimes associated with rowdy, drunk induced behaviour wherein homes were entered and free food and drink demanded.

Although the practice is synomymous with Christmas it is likely to have its roots in the indigenous Anglo-Saxon pagan beliefs. In the Middle Ages wassailing became a way of encouraging a feudal lord into giving to his peasants by begging charity. When approaching the Lord’s manor, they would sing something along the lines of ‘We are not daily beggars that beg from door to door, but we are friendly neighbours whom you have seen before’. And the famous Victorian carol, ‘Here We and Come and A Wassailing’ demonstrates the blessing given by the wassailers to the recipient: ‘Love and joy come to you,

In the West Country where cider production is plentiful, wassailing also referred to drinking (and singing) to the health of the trees in the hopes that they might thrive better. An old rhyme goes: Wassaile the trees, that they may beare You many a Plum and many a Peare:

For more or lesse fruits they will bring, As you do give them Wassailing.

The drink ‘wassail’, made of hot mulled cider (among other ingredients), was associated with this practice and held in ‘wassail bowls’... again it too became associated with Christmas time customs.

And to you your wassail too;

And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year’
