Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land is a Wivelsfieldbased charity caring for donkeys in Israel, Palestine and Bethlehem. We decided to catch up with Tim Wass from the charity so that he can tell us more about the work the charity does.

have many which were the target of direct abuse.”

Safe Haven was born out of a typical British love of animals and shock at their mistreatment. It was founded in 2000 by a volunteer at an animal shelter in Jerusalem who became aware of the many hundreds of sick, unwanted and abused donkeys in the region.

One such donkey is Jonathan. He was brought to the sanctuary earlier this year by a lady who found him wandering the streets. “Jonathan was terrified when he was coaxed out of the horsebox and it was easy to see why”, says Tim, “He had a huge infected wound in his side. We quickly gave him first aid and called the vet out to him. It took some time for Jonathan to realise he was safe but now he has settled down and has made friends with the other donkeys.”

The scale of the problem is quite horrific, Tim tells us, “We have around 250 donkeys at our sanctuary in Israel. They have come to us from all sorts of backgrounds –sadly, we

The donkeys who come to the sanctuary have found refuge and peace but they are the lucky ones as Tim goes on to explain. “Donkeys are still very much in use in Israel

and particularly the West Bank (Palestine) as beasts of burden. They are used to bring crops in from the fields and to carry building materials up and down the stairs of partially constructed buildings. The average working donkey only lives to the age of 10 and suffers terrible wounds from ill-fitting harnessing and carrying heavy loads. So as well as the sanctuary, we have a clinic in the Palestinian city of Nablus where we treat hundreds of working donkeys, mules and horses every month, completely free of charge.” Ultimately however, the future of the donkeys all comes down to education. “We have schools coming to our sanctuary and Nablus clinic as you need to break the cycle”, says Tim. “If a child sees their dad not looking after the donkeys then it continues. By showing the children that looking after their donkeys means it will stay healthier and able to work for their family, you bring about long term changes in attitude”. Tim ends by saying “The cost of running the sanctuary and community work is daunting and our finances are always on a knife-edge. We would be so grateful if Ashdown Forest Continues over the page. The Crowborough Foundation Formed in 2009, this small locally based charity, it operates in the community across the Crowborough and larger Sussex area. The goals of the foundation are directed towards educating people of all ages about self-employment or going into business, as an alternative to general employment. It is truly a family affair with the charity's director, Selina Groom Robinson, running the foundation on a daily basis and her husband, business manager, Simon Robinson being responsible for the training part of the business. Simon has lots of experience working on business mentoring with the Prince’s Trust, University of Teesside and Morrison’s Trust. The background is that originally the Jeanie Foundation was formed in Oxford by Simon which helped people in Gambia start up businesses, which Selina volunteered for.

However when they were married and Simon moved to Crowborough, they both realised there was a local need; emphasis was changed to local and the Crowborough Foundation was created. Offering business mentoring to anybody who is interested in Crowborough and the greater Sussex area, the foundation offers a free service. No need to attend meetings, the entire mentoring process can be done via the internet using the latest technology! The 3 week programme is available to anybody interested in becoming self employed or going into business. At the end of the programme the mentee will be given a certificate showing they have completed the course.

8

Currently Selina and Simon are looking for some large companies to support the charity, and are also hoping for some funding in the future from Wealden District Council and other private charitable trusts. Their existing funding comes from selling items that are donated either at a market or on their Facebook page. They also raise money by people using their shopping website: www.goraise.co.uk/ crowborough-foundation.

Crafting Creatures Great & Small Brighton as well as various Forestry Commission Parks and other public spaces.

When David Lucas decided to try his hand at chainsaw carving ‘for a bit of fun’, he probably never dreamed that in a few years he would be creating much sought-after and beloved Gruffalo Friends Sculptures for the forestry commission forest walks, in association with Magic Light Pictures (who developed the Gruffalo brand, including producing ‘the Gruffalo’ film). After establishing his talent, together with his in-laws, the Woodland Centre in West Hoathly was created. This local family-run business now fashion much-coveted chainsaw carved timber sculptures, with commissions coming in from across the country. With the current concern that traditional crafts are on the wane, this is a refreshing story of craft success.

David explains that it is a real joy to work with wood and to discover the uniqueness of what is locked up within the tree... a wood whisperer perhaps? Certainly carving seemed to come naturally to him, starting out as a hobby for a bit of fun, and turning into a profession with a huge waiting list for his works! His creations can be seen across the South East.

Each sculpture is produced by David using either sustainably-managed timber, under Forestry Commission schemes, or from ‘problem’ trees, some of which may be causing a danger to the public. Examples of the latter can be ‘wind-blows’, or trees that are shedding large limbs onto footpaths, houses, parks or gardens.

Here is a Q&A with David about his work:

What inspired you to get into chainsaw sculpturing? How did it all begin? It really all began with Anne Watson, who is the mother of my then-girlfriend (now

Once David finishes the creation, it is handed to his brother-in-law Reg for sanding and then his motherin-law Anne for painting.. so definitely a family team effort! The Woodland Centre’s work can now be seen at Wakehurst Place; Kew Gardens; Westonbirt Arboretum; Marwell Wildlife; Egerton Park (Bexhill-on-Sea); Battle Abbey; National Trust locations at Sheffield Park, Nyman’s Park and Charlecote Park and various parks in

wife) Heather. Anne had been interested in giving chainsaw carving a go and her husband (David Watson) organised for a sculptor to come down and show her how it’s done. I was around at the time and I suppose this must have been the spark of inspiration. This was over 10 years ago now and led on to the creation of our family business, Woodland Centre ltd. David and Anne already had a timber business, selling products such as mulch and chippings. So chainsaw carving fitted in very well and they asked me whether I would like to give it a go. At the time I was actually training to be a commercial pilot but given the expense of the training and needing to find an income, I thought ‘why not?’ I’d never used a chainsaw before but had always been interested in art/ drawing and had recently graduated from Plymouth University with a degree in product design. So armed with this background and following a course in

chainsaw cross-cutting and maintenance, I started to practice the art of chainsaw carving. Although in my mind my early pieces were fairly basic, people seemed to be interested in buying them, which in turn spurred me on to continue.

What is the most challenging aspect of what you do? Actually production scheduling and keeping up with demand seems to be the biggest challenge, although as my father-in-law would say “this is a good

problem to have”. Some of the commissions we take on are very large-scale and (using a petrol-driven chainsaw) we’re constrained to working outdoors. So it can be hard to estimate the length of time needed to complete a commission. Popularity has meant that we have quite a long lead time that is usually between 6 and 12 months. As each piece is handmade and we’re a small team, most customers can accept this and are prepared to wait. However this doesn’t stop us trying to squeeze in the extra sculpture in here and there as we try our best not to let anyone down.

What is the highlight of your chainsaw sculpturing career so far? I would have to say the current Gruffalo’s Friends commission that we are working on for the Forestry

getting them delivered on time. I was lucky enough to travel to the opening of the first Gruffalo Friends sculpture trail at Westonbirt Arboretum with my wife, Heather and baby girl, Elowyn. This was a real joy as I don’t always get to see the finished sculptures being enjoyed by the children (and adults) they are intended for. To be able to see families taking photos and posing with the sculptures really makes all the hard work worthwhile.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received? Commission and Magic Light. It is a privilege to be able to work with them both, and, at over 70 sculptures, this is by far the biggest commission we’ve taken on to date. It’s also a real family affair as my brother-in-law (Reg) is involved with sanding the pieces ready for Anne to do all the colour work. Crab Cakes By Head Chef Byron Hayter at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

Ingredients Crab Cakes • • • • • • • • • • • • •

450g of white crab meat 100g of breadcrumbs, fine 2 large eggs 6 spring onions, finely sliced 2 tbsp of soy sauce 1 tsp Thai fish sauce 1 garlic clove, crushed fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated 1 lime, juiced plain flour salt, to taste white pepper, freshly ground 4 tbsp of vegetable oil

Dressing • • • • •

1 pomegranate 50ml of olive oil 1 dash of lime juice A handful of salad leaves A handful of finely chopped chives

Method: To make your crab cakes, start by carefully picking through the crab meat for any pieces of cartilage or shell. Combine the meat in a bowl with the eggs, breadcrumbs, spring onions, fish and soya

sauces, ginger, garlic and lime juice, then season to taste with a little salt and pepper.

Use a palette knife to transfer the crab cakes from the pan on to kitchen paper to drain off excess oil.

Divide the mixture into 50g portions and shape into even round cakes, before lightly coating with flour.

Serve the crab cakes on a warm plate with a garnish of salad leaves dressed with pomegranate, chives and olive oil, and enjoy!

Heat the vegetable oil in a large non-stick frying pan on a medium heat. When the pan has come to temperature, carefully arrange the crab cakes in the pan, making sure they don’t touch each other. Allow the cakes to cook for 3-4 minutes on each side so they are hot in the centre and golden-brown on the outside.

Chernobyl: How we still help

Here in Mid Sussex, the branch of Friends of Chernobyl’s Children has been based in Horsted Keynes since 2001. Each summer we bring a group of 15 Belarusian children, from the area worst affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986, to spend a month here in this area. Our aim is to support their often depleted immune systems by giving them some respite from the ongoing terrible pollution, as well as alleviating the severe poverty they and their families face day to day. Most people in the UK are totally unaware that many families on the edge of Europe still live in wooden homes with no running water or indoor sanitation, despite extreme winter temperatures. Whole families are frequently housed in a single hostel room, with very basic and poorly maintained cooking and bathing facilities, shared with many other residents.

environment, healthy food and a comfy bed. Evenings and weekends are also spent with their hosts, but during the week the children attend a daily activity programme, meeting each morning at the Martindale centre in Horsted Keynes. The emphasis is on plenty of fresh air and good fun, with activities such as swimming, camping and trips to the sea. The kind of pastimes that most of our UK children love and take for granted, but that these children seldom, if ever experience. The children also receive dental and optical checks, and at the end of the month the children return home with bags full of clothing, shoes, gifts and vitamins that greatly assist their families back in Belarus.

Unlike other charities these children will not remain unfamiliar little strangers from a distant part of the world, as we aim to bring each child for 4 consecutive years, between the ages of 7-12, allowing a really strong relationship to develop between the families here and in Belarus. There are also huge benefits for our own young people to learn that not all children are as privileged as they are. Furthermore, we undertake a week-long visit to Belarus each autumn to maintain and strengthen these relationships, both with the current and older children, as well as monitoring ongoing living conditions and identifying potential new children for the coming years. If you would like to find out more about how you could help restore hope to a struggling Belarusian child and their family, please contact Sheila Nash by phone on 01825 790295 or by email at foccmidsussex@gmail.com.

Whilst here, the children stay with local host families who provide them with a loving, welcoming home

We

Dear Sariah... Welcome to our 'Dear Sariah' page.

Introducing Sariah Jackson, trained midwife and mother of four and now our advice-giver extraordinaire.

Who needs 'experts' when you can get

Dear Sariah, About a year ago I had a big falling out with my husband’s sister which ended with a pretty big insult to me. We had been friends but over time our relationship had cooled so it wasn’t a massive surprise. She is extremely close to my husband but afterwards she just poured on the sisterly coals with him calling him almost every day. I put my foot down saying that he needed to insist on an apology. I’d let things blow over in the past but this had made things worse. After a lot of effort by my husband a letter arrived but not an apology. Last Christmas she refused to come to our house for a family meet up but always continues to insist on attention from my husband. She got divorced several years ago and has not had a proper relationship since. I’ve reached out to her so many times to have a proper conversation, but she refuses to talk to me. She is always very bubbly with my husband and pretends there is no problem. For me, the issue is having someone ‘in my life’, so close to my husband, that is so antipathetic to me. My husband has put in some space between them. He is protective of her and gets pretty defensive when we discuss it - though he knows she has faults. What to do?

perienced mum!

the best advice from a local, highly-ex

My first reaction to this is that perhaps your sister-in-law is a little jealous of the stable relationship that you have with her brother. He has what she no longer has and that looks like it is quite hard for her. It also feels like she resents you a little because you have all that time with her brother, who she clearly adores. This could be difficult to resolve as it seems you have reached out to her several times, inviting her to your home etc. I can see that you feel her letter of apology wasn’t really an apology at all, more something to appease her brother. Sometimes, we never really get the apology we think we are owed and the best we can do is draw a line under it, if possible, and move past it. I think your poor husband, who is stuck in the middle of all of this, needs to take a deep breath and have a very honest conversation with his sister. He needs to tell her that it is very difficult for you both when his sister, who he loves, is not able to have a good relationship with his wife, who he also loves. Perhaps he could say that if she values their relationship, she needs to build some bridges and meet you half way. I don’t think it needs to come to a ‘her or you’ scenario but he does need to emphasise to her where his real loyalties lie. Could you invite her for dinner, or drinks, give her a hug when she comes, and think no more about it. Constant kindness often wears people down and they are powerless to resist after a while. It’s so hard because we fall in love with one person, who happens to have a family that we don’t always like, let alone love. You’ve made the first step because you want to resolve it. Keep reaching out, if you can and hopefully she’ll see that she can really be a part of her husband’s family.

Dear Sariah, My elderly grandmother, who lives abroad, has basically dis-inherited my mother by saying she wants to give her very expensive flat solely to our aunt - worth over a million pounds. My aunt is very unhappy about it and feels it will split up the family, which it may do, but has not been able to change my grandmother’s mind. Although my mother has visited my grandmother a good deal and calls her all the time, my grandmother feels that over the years she has just not given her the attention she wanted,

26

whereas my aunt obviously sees her more. However, my mother who is much older than my aunt, has done things like having our aunt living with us for a time when she was younger. My grandmother seems to have forgotten these things. Ironically my mum has just visited her and after leaving, my granny is complaining that she feels a void in her life without my mother there. When my mum got upset at being told, my granny said that it proves my mother’s greed and she only cares about the money (the shock of not having the money was the least of it, it was the shock of being disinherited by a mother). DEAR SARIAH... CONTINUED

Oh dear, this all sounds a bit of a mess. Inheritance and money can cause such friction between family members and it’s difficult to advise on what’s best to do because we only have one side of the story. The first redeeming factor is that your aunt, mum’s sister, also recognises that this is a problem and isn’t happy with it either. The obvious thing to do is to currently do nothing and then, when the time comes, and the inheritance is in place, your aunt simply sells the flat and splits the profit with your mum. If they are close, then that should be something that would happen easily. However, if your mum and her sister want this to be resolved whilst your grandmother is still alive and well, then they will need to work together to try and rectify it. I would suggest that they go to visit your grandmother together to try and have a frank conversation with her. I appreciate that this may be difficult to organise as your grandmother and aunt live abroad but often face to face discussion is the best way. Your mum could perhaps ask why her mother feels the way that she does. Unfortunately, if your grandmother is of sound mind then she is free to leave her worldly goods to whomever she chooses but I can see that this can cause great hurt to those involved. Perhaps, with the support of her sister, your mum may be able to get some answers from their mum as to why she is making these decisions. For those affected, it is often not about the money at all, but about the damaging effect that these decisions can have on an individual. I hope that they are able to get some resolve.

A chance encounter with a pair of foxes on a wintry Sussex day has scooped photographer, Karen Diton, first prize in Sussex Wildlife Trust’s annual photographic competition which won the public vote. The theme of this year’s competition was The Joy of Nature. Karen described how she took her winning photograph: “I was staying with my mum in Crowborough in January this year when we had some snow. The Twelve Days of Christmas LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

It is not generally realised that this wellknown, apparently secular song, is thought by some to have hidden, religious meanings. In the Commonwealth of Oliver Cromwell, all Catholic teachings were forbidden. However, loyal Catholics still wanted to teach their children some of the basic facts and this song was written to remember them in a way that was not obvious.

Anonymous broadside, Angus, 1774–1825

The partridge was well known for its fierce defence of its young, even to drawing the predator away regardless of its own safety. This made it an obvious metaphor for Christ. The two turtle doves are reminders that the bible is made up of Old and New Testaments. The marked difference in the styles and messages sent by them is very apparent.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the Gospels which open the New Testament, are appropriately represented by “calling birds”. Calling to the world to spread the message, as we know birds sing. The word “colley”, often used instead of “calling” is a dialect word for black. Together they relate a message to the world.

Faith, hope and charity are the guiding principles behind the Christian religion. French hens are the usual way of depicting them. I have been unable to discover why hens and even stranger why French?

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS CONTINUED

The first five books of the old Testament, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, known collectively as the Pentateuch, are the five gold rings. Together they tell the story of the beginnings of the world and finish just after the death of Moses just after he had been given a glimpse of the promised land and the entry to that promised land, Canaan, by the people of Israel.

The Beatitudes mark an important part of Christ’s message. In contrast to the proscriptive “Thou shalt not” of the Ten Commandments, these are all positive exhortations to do good. “Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.” And lo, maids-a-milking represent these! Nine ladies dancing are once again, more fruits of the holy spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, mildness, modesty, fidelity and chastity.

Six geese-a-laying are the six days of the Creation. Again, the metaphor is apposite (appropriate): the geese producing eggs can be likened to god creating various aspects of our now, known world. Starting with god making the heavens and the earth on the first day, to starting life in the water on the fifth and all creatures that live on the land on Day 6. On the seventh, god rested, his creation complete. This idea of a day of rest is one which is prevalent today.

The ten commandments are depicted as lords-a-leaping. They were entrusted to go out into world and spread Christ’s message.

The seven swans are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. These are: love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, fidelity and self-control. The image one conjures of swans is often that they glide serenely on the surface but are, below the water, furiously scrambling to keep up; this is again, appropriate to these virtues. Only too often the apparent exponents of these characteristics are struggling to uphold them.

The eleven faithful apostles are pipers piping. This, again seems appropriate as they were charged with spreading Christ’s message to the world.
