“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Dear Residents,

Whats inside this month

Welcome to our Christmas issue!

Ashdown Forest continues to provide us with daily beautiful sights and sounds throughout the seasons and we are pleased to bring you a few incredible shots from local photographers of the forest in 2018. One of the great gardens of Sussex, High Beeches, was irreparably damaged in the Second World War. The gardens remain and are still visited by hundreds of people over the year. But what is the story behind the demise of the house itself. Thanks to local man Clive Smith, we are able to bring you a fascinating account of the events of that fateful day from the pilot whose plane crashed. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for supporting our local businesses over the year and reading our magazines. We hope you’ve enjoyed them as much as we have putting it together. Wishing you the very best Chrismas and a Happy New Year!

©The Slaugham Archive

Although it’s freezing outside, we hope to bring you some festive cheer to warm you up! We have an article about the history of the Christmas card, as well as a Christmas trivia quiz for the whole family.

THE CHRISTMAS CARD

Maketh Christmas We take a look at the beginnings of the Christmas card and how it came to be our national obsession: The first recorded Christmas cards were sent by Michael Maier to James I of England and his son Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales way back in 1611, it was discovered in 1979 in the Scottish Record Office. The card read, "A greeting on the birthday of the Sacred King, to the most worshipful and energetic lord and most eminent James, King of Great Britain and Ireland, and Defender of the true faith, with a gesture of joyful celebration of the Birthday of the Lord, in most joy and fortune, we enter into the new auspicious year 1612" – being laid out to form

The first Christmas card was designed in 1843 by John Callcott Horsley for Sir Henry Cole [Wikimedia Commons] a rose. This would have been a significant, grand gesture and not the Christmas cards that we popularly think of today. The birth of the modern Christmas card sending tradition as we know it can be credited to Sir Henry Cole with illustration done by John Callcott Horsley in London on 1st May 1843. As you can see in the image, the central picture showed three generations of one family raising a toast: on either side are scenes of charity, with food and clothing being given to the poor. Allegedly this image of the family drinking wine together proved controversial, probably due to certain people's reactionary throwback to

8

more puritanical Christmasses when celebration was all but banned or certainly frowned upon – Thank you Mr Oliver Cromwell! Cole had personally helped to introduce the Penny Post three years earlier before coming up with this clever new business idea: two batches were printed totalling 2050 cards and sold that year for a shilling each. Henry Cole could not have foreseen what his enterprising idea would eventually lead to and it’s still going strong two centuries later! Early British cards actually reminded the recipient of the approach of Spring, favouring fairies and flowers Continues over the page. Enquiries: 01342 300152

and other Spring related images. Humorous and sentimental images of children and animals were popular. In 1873, the American lithograph firm Prang and Mayer began creating greeting cards for the popular market in Britain (as there was not yet an established market in America). However, off the back of their success, the firm began selling their Christmas cards in America in 1874. Business owner, Louis Prang, became known as the "father of the American Christmas card." By the 1880s, Prang and his partners were producing over five million cards a year by using the chromolithography process of printmaking! However, the popularity of his cards led to cheaper imitations that eventually drove him from the market.

Throughout the 20th century, many stationery manufacturers found

Christmas cards a most profitable business. The design of cards continually evolved with changing tastes and printing techniques. The famous Hallmark Cards was established in 1913 by Joyce Hall and his brother Rollie Hall to market their selfproduced Christmas cards. Risque humour caught on in the 1950s. Artistic, nostalgic, sentimental, humourous, religious and Christmassy themed images have continued in popularity, and, in the 21st century, reproductions of Victorian and Edwardian cards are easy to obtain and have become more popular. Make what you will of that, but how ironic that in this age of incredible technologies at the click of our fingers, we yet yearn for simpler times and themes.

Some Christmas indulgence is heading your way with this delicious recipe from Alex Floyd, head pastry chef, Ashdown Park Hotel

Individual Hot Chocolate Fondants with Salted Caramel Sauce Serves 4 You will need 4 x metal 4-5-inch diameter ring moulds; brush with melted butter, coat the inside with cocoa powder and place in the fridge to chill before cooking.

Chocolate Fondant Ingredients: • 50g melted butter • 20g cocoa powder • 200g 70% dark chocolate • 200g unsalted butter • 200g caster sugar • 2 whole eggs • 4 egg yolks • 200g plain flour

Salted Caramel Sauce Ingredients: • 175g light brown sugar • 300ml double cream • 50g unsalted butter • ¼ tsp salt

Method 1. Place a pan of boiling water on the stove and take a bowl which sits nice and tight over the pan. Add in the butter, caster sugar and chocolate and stir occasionally until melted.

2. Once melted, remove from the heat and beat together to ensure all the ingredients have combined, then beat in the eggs followed by the flour. 3. Take your metal rings out of the fridge and equally share the mix out between the moulds.

5. For the salted caramel sauce, boil all the ingredients for 2-3 minutes, remove from heat and strain. 6. Serve the warm fondants and sauce with vanilla ice cream or clotted cream.

HOTEL AND COUNTRY CLUB

4. You can bake them straight away on 180c for 10 minutes, or you can place them in the fridge and cook them later from cold for 1214 minutes.

All About our Hazel Dormouse The South being a final ‘stronghold’ for these furry, friendly-looking rodents means knowledge about them is more important than ever: The hazel dormouse is well-known for being a sleepyhead, and rightly so. It will spend about six months of the year in hibernation, curled into a little golden ball of fur in a cosy nest of leaves, and once a dormouse has entered its deep winter sleep it won’t wake up for anything but Spring. Dormice usually hibernate from November until April or even May, depending on the weather, but before they can think about going to bed they must first focus on fattening up.

up looking like a miniature clog. In contrast, mice and voles are much messier and leave obvious tooth marks, creating holes with edges that resemble a milled coin.

Autumn provides a bounty of nuts and berries perfect for this purpose. Dormice feast on blackberries, sloes, sweet chestnuts and – best of all – hazelnuts. Each one is packed full of fat and protein, providing a highcalorie reward that’s well worth the effort of gnawing through its tough outer shell. Dormice nibble hazelnuts in such a distinctive way that the empty shells are reliable clues to the presence of these elusive little creatures. They carve a neat, circular hole with a smooth inner rim so that the discarded shell ends

Dormice themselves are much harder to find, mainly because they are nocturnal and secretive but also because they are now quite rare. Numbers have plummeted in the past hundred years and dormice have disappeared from half of their former range. Thankfully, southern England remains a stronghold but even here, dormouse distribution is still very patchy and remaining populations are often isolated. Dormice are almost entirely arboreal (living in trees) and rarely come down to the ground, so

14

they need plenty of diverse deciduous woodland, ideally with stands of their favourite hazel coppice, and a dense understorey of honeysuckle, bramble and shrubs to climb through. They can only ‘commute’ between woodland patches via suitable hedgerows, which provide safe passage through the landscape as well as a source of food and shelter. By restoring and reconnecting dormouse habitats across Sussex, this sleepy little character will be able to thrive once more - and a wealth of other woodland wildlife will benefit too. populations become increasingly isolated and lose genetic diversity. Traditional forestry methods such as coppicing create favourable habitat for dormice and the abandonment of such methods has hurt numbers.

Dormice are slow breeders and poor dispersers and generally live in older woodlands with a welldeveloped understory often linked by old hedgerows. In the majority of woodlands in Britain the management required to maintain a welldeveloped understory has ceased, making them less

suitable for dormice, luckily for us we still have historic woodland in this area. Inappropriate management of hedgerows, or their removal, has meant that woods that have lost their dormice and will not be repopulated.

Conservation methods include managing existing woodland in a dormousefriendly way and providing nest boxes for the species to use (these can then optionally be monitored to gain an insight into population trends). If you think you have a suitable spot for a nest box, you might like the idea of gifting a Christmas present of a dormouse nest box to our British Wildlife this year?

The Halifax & High Beeches By Clive Smith

Flight Sergeant Tom Gallantry was the pilot of 76 Squadron Halifax II which set off from its base at Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire, at 19:15 hours on 11th March 1943 on an operation to Stuttgart. This is his story, which is also the story behind the fate of High Beeches House, Handcross. In Tom’s own words: ‘It was March 1943, the eleventh to be precise. I had celebrated my twenty-first birthday a month before we had completed 22 bombing raids on Germany. I had just been granted a commission. We were an integrated, happy crew, well satisfied with each other's expertise and input and it was beginning to look as if we might now complete our first tour of operations. Two crew numbers, Len Exton, the navigator and Bill Middleton the flight engineer were somewhat older than the rest of us, but the only relevance that had was that they were probably a stabilising influence on the others of us. Alex McLure, our Canadian wireless operator was, because of his engagement and impending marriage to a local girl, somewhat quieter and he naturally liked to spend most of his off-duty time with his fiancée. The bomb aimer, Johnny Higgins, another Canadian, was a devilmay-care young fellow whilst the two gunners, Ken Whitmore, our twenty-year old mid-upper gunner, and Tommy Farrer, our Canadian reargunner, made up the rest of the crew. We were looking forward to Spring and the end of the long, cold winter nights and tonight was to be our ninth mission in fourteen nights. During those fourteen nights we had visited Cologne, Essen, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremburg twice, St. Nazaire and Berlin and we hoped that tonight's target might be one of the less heavily defended and less distant ones. We were therefore not too over-joyed when the curtain was rolled back in the briefing room to see that the target was Stuttgart in Southern Germany, a round trip of some fourteen hundred miles. We had been there before in the previous November but the only thing I remembered about that was that we had returned safely from it. Our wonderful ground crew were all there to assure us that the aircraft was in tip-top condition and to see us off with their usual jokes and we knew that they would be there

to welcome us when we returned. These highly skilled men; engine and airframe fitters, riggers, armourers, radio and instrument mechanics, never let us down and were ever ready to give advice and guidance whenever asked. They are the unsung heroes of Bomber Command and we owe our lives in great part to their skill and hard work under the most difficult conditions. After a final cigarette we all clambered aboard, started the engines, carried out our usual checks and taxied out to the end of the runway. Take off was to be at about seven o‘clock so everything was pitch black except for the guide lights on the taxying track and the dimmed lights of the flare path. On receipt of the green light from the airfield controller we turned onto the runway and I opened up the throttles and started the take-off. I climbed to operational height, leveled off, checked all systems and continued on our set course whilst the rest of the crew carried out their usual duties. The two gunners kept a constant look out for enemy night fighters and also for our own aircraft flying around us. The wireless operator obtained radio bearings which he passed to the navigator so that he could keep a regular check on our position and timing. The bomb aimer tried to map read as well as keep a look out and the flight engineer continually monitored engine performance and fuel consumption. We reached the target at some

time around midnight. As an experienced crew I felt that we should decide at what height to bomb from and so approaching the target I noted where the heaviest concentrations of flak (anti-aircraft fire) were bursting. The Halifax’s and Lancasters were flying at about eighteen to twenty thousand feet. The Stirlings were down around ten thousand feet so I decided to make our bombing run at twelve thousand feet and thus avoid the worst of the anti-aircraft fire. The bomb aimer picked out the aiming point in the light of the flares and from the coloured markers dropped by the pathfinders, and we started our bombing run. This was always the most nerve-wracking part of the raid because the idea was to keep the aircraft at a constant height and speed and on a straight

26

course running up to the target. Then, after dropping the bombs, we had to continue like this for another ten seconds in order to take a photograph of our bombs bursting - hopefully on or near to the aiming point. This was the most vulnerable time because it allowed the enemy radar time to plot our position and to get an accurate sight on us with their antiaircraft guns. However, with the optimism of youth and the "it won’t happen to us" attitude we unloaded our bombs, high explosive and incendiary... and then it all happened. There was a series of almighty bangs, the aircraft was tossed about like a cork and immediately the struggle began to right our wounded Halifax and get away from whatever was doing this damage to us. What had obviously happened was that Enquiries: 01342 300152

some eagle-eyed German radar operator had spotted a blip on the screen showing a stupid pilot flying at a different height from most of the other attackers and so leaving himself wide open to radar predicted anti-aircraft fire. However, we were still in the air and more or less right side up so I turned away from the target and on to our compass course for home. We then began to take stock of our damage. We had lost height and were down to about ten thousand feet, the starboard engine was giving no power and I was unable to feather the propeller because of mechanical damage (the propeller blades would normally be rotated in an emergency to stop them spinning and cut down their drag through the air) so it just continued to wind-mill round, consequently giving a fair amount of drag. The other three engines seemed to be performing alright so by giving them more power I was able to maintain our height. The bomb doors were jammed in a half-closed position but the most serious faults were that our elevator cables had been severed and the electrical relays were out of action thus leaving us wide open to attack from enemy night-fighters. The lack of elevator control; that is, the ability to keep the aircraft from diving or climbing, was much more serious. Fortunately, the trimming tabs on the elevators were still operating but by judicious and constant use of the trimming wheel I was able to maintain a more

or less reasonable position in the air. There were two options open to us now. We could turnaround and head for Switzerland, a neutral country, and be interned for the rest of the war, or we could struggle along in the hope of getting back to England. As captain of the aircraft I had no hesitation in taking the latter. Ken and Tommy, our air gunners, and Johnnie the bomb aimer continued to search the skies for enemy fighters, fortunately without seeing any. l doubt whether I should have been able to take any evasive action if one had attacked us, so once again Lady Luck was riding with us. All this time Mac, the wireless operator, was beavering away trying to repair his radio set which had been put out of action by the enemy gunfire and Len, our navigator, peaceful and calm as ever, was trying to calculate our position by using astro-navigation. Bill, the flight engineer, kept a constant check on our fuel consumption and engine performance and tried, regrettably without success, to organise some better form of control over the elevators. We were also carrying a second pilot, also Canadian who was making his first operational trip. He had no specific task to perform but was just gaining experience before venturing out with his own crew. He was very quiet and as far as I can recall the only time he spoke was when he asked if every trip was as exciting and dangerous as this!

28

We carried on in this fashion, slowly losing height and gradually falling behind the main bomber stream, feeling very lonely and vulnerable to attack by fighters or ground fire until some forty miles from the French coast the port outer engine began to overheat and show signs of dying on us. Eventually the flight engineer had to stop the engine, feather the propeller and open up the two remaining inboard engines in order to keep us in the air. The French coast was indeed a welcome sight but even more welcome was the English coast as we passed over it just to the west of Brighton and continued to head inland. I had already decided to try to land at one of the airfields dotted around that part of south east England; we had on a previous occasion landed at RAF Tangmere and I felt confident enough to put down there. We were by now down to about four thousand feet when the two inboard engines which had so bravely kept us airborne began to show signs of the strain which they had been put under. Normally these two wonderful Rolls Royce Merlin engines could have coped reasonably well but because of our half-open bomb doors and the wind milling propeller of the starboard outer engine they had been asked to operate for several hours under much greater pressure than normal. So, it was not too much of a surprise when they began to overheat and looked like giving up the ghost. Under those conditions I felt that it would be suicidal to attempt Enquiries: 01342 300152

THE HALIFAX & HIGH BEECHES CONTINUED

High Beeches House, Halifax Damage, Rear (B. Ray) crack the canopy opened and I was floating through the air. An explosion on the ground and leaping flames told me that the Halifax had not made it to the Channel. The handle of the ripcord was still in my hand so I pushed it inside my battledress jacket and as I did so I felt my cigarettes there. However, before I could make up my mind to have a smoke something struck me lightly on the face and then I was on the ground. I had narrowly missed a tree and it was one of the branches which had brushed my face. Some ten minutes later I came to an anti-aircraft battery where the soldiers took me in, gave me a cup of tea

It was 06 hours 51 minutes after take-off from Yorkshire that Tom and his crew were back in England after baling out by parachute near Handcross. Some of the crew came down in Tilgate Forest, seen at the top of the map on a previous page. After travelling back to their base in Yorkshire, Tom and his crew continued to be fortunate for they carried on flying and successfully completed their tour of 30 operations, with Tom being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). What Tom and crew hadn’t realised at the time was that their stricken Halifax had come

a landing in the pitch dark at an unfamiliar airfield. You can only ride your luck so far and we seemed to have used more than our fair share already that night. I told the crew that we would have to bail out and ordered them to put on their parachutes and come to the front of the aircraft and go out through the escape hatch in the nose so that I could see them all go. I began to turn the aircraft around so that it was heading back out over the Channel where I hoped it would finally and safely ditch. I don't recall the exact order in which the crew jumped but eventually I was left alone with my poor dying Halifax. I climbed down from my seat, had a final look at the engine instruments, their readings left me in no doubt that I must go, little as I relished the idea. I sat on the edge of the escape hatch facing the rear with my legs dangling in the slipstream. I looked down into the inky blackness and pushed myself out. I saw the tail of the Halifax pass over my head, waited a few seconds and pulled the ripcord. With a loud

and telephoned the nearest airfield. Very shortly afterwards and RAF truck arrived to pick me up and take me to Redhill aerodrome. I waited there until it was daylight by which time all the other members of my crew had phoned in and reported their whereabouts. We went off to collect them and, on the way, stopped to see our crashed aircraft still smouldering but with one wing stuck up bravely in the air - a sad end to a wonderful machine.’

Stitching up

Merriment at Standen

some

Jamie has been inspiring hundreds of stitchers from the local community and further afield to work together to create Standen’s annual 20 foot designer Christmas tree.

One man, one tree and a community of stitchers have come together this Christmas to produce a contemporary art showstopper, bringing mirth and merriment to Standen. Jamie Chalmers, aka Mr X Stitch, the Kingpin of Contemporary Embroidery, is the designer of this year’s Christmas art installation ‘The Xmas Tree at Standen’. Jamie is one of the world’s most well-known male embroiderers, an internationally exhibited textile artist and curator. His recent exhibition at Standen, the Mr X Stitch Guide to Cross Stitch, showed how this humble craft is alive and kicking and not limited to images of cute kittens and country cottages.

“When we launched the Xmas XStitch Bauble project I didn’t know what the response would be, but it’s fair to say that I’m overwhelmed by it. To have received over 500 baubles from an international community of stitchers is truly humbling and I hope that the visitors to Standen will feel the stitchy love that’s been generated by all these wonderful people!”, said Jamie Chalmers. Jamie has been working with local community groups in the area creating bold and colourful cross stitch baubles to hang on the tree. Members of local WI’s, girl

36

guides, hospital workers and even a vicar have joined fans of cross stitch from across the world in creating beautiful baubles to be included in this festive art installation. Over 500 hand stitched mini works of art are included on the tree. Each one individual and reflecting the character and style of the stitchers themselves. Richard Grudzinski, Visitor Experience Manager for Standen, explains, ‘We wanted to invite the community to get involved and create a truly collaborative art installation. The fact that members from the local community and across the world have donated over 7,500 hours of their time creating these mini pieces of art is both Continues over the page.

Ashdown Forest is a unique and very special place for residents, local communities and visitors - 6,500 acres of protected heathland and woodland, paths, rides and trails, hidden gardens, waterfalls, streams and magnificent views to the North and South Downs. The most recent visitor survey estimated that there were 4541 visits per day to Ashdown Forest with just a small staff team, supported by teams of volunteers, working to ‘regulate and manage the forest as an amenity and place of resort and to conserve it as a quiet and natural area of outstanding beauty.’
