Flat roof repairs
Flat roofing
Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

A New World Record for a New Year
Uckfield resident, Phil Edwards, intends to speed into the record books with the world’s fastest electric motorbike. Phil is the director for the ‘Fast Charge’ project which is the UK leader in low-carbon automotive technology and world-beating motorsport. The project is currently working on developing a bike to break the world record of 6.94 seconds by travelling a quarter of a mile at 200mph in six seconds with 1000 horsepower and zero emissions from a standing-start. Phil plans to see the bike make its debut on a race track in the very near future.
as the UK’s quickest electric motorcycle. We were, fairly soon after, beaten by our main rivals (Kingston University) but rather than challenge again for the UK record I decided to go a step further and try and beat the quickest bikes in America and set a world-record’.
items, unloading washing machines, taking card and cash from ATMs and other everyday tasks that disabled people find difficult, painful or impossible to do for themselves.
Generous Phil will donate six per cent of all Supporter Club subscriptions and 10 per cent of all merchandise sales to national charity Canine Partners which celebrated their 25th anniversary last year. This charity trains dogs to perform tasks such as opening and closing doors, undressing, pressing buttons, retrieving
‘Our project gets a lot of publicity and I wanted to reflect some of that to support a charity that I really felt was doing incredibly worthwhile work. I found out about Canine Partners and met them to understand more about their work. I was amazed at the work they are doing to train assistance dogs and the great
Here Phil gives his personal reason:
Phil already holds the title of the UK’s fastest electric motorcycle having designed and built one in 2011. In the last three years he’s planned and fundraised to build a new bike to take on the American constructors and bring the world record to the UK. Phil said, ‘we originally built a motorbike that set the record

people that work with them. I now donate a percentage of our merchandise sales and supporters club subscriptions to them as well as taking collecting boxes and leaflets along to the events we get invited to’. Kay Gilmore, South East Regional Fundraiser for Canine Partners, said: ‘What Phil is aiming to achieve is phenomenal and we are grateful to him for allowing us to be a part of his journey. His help will enable us to transform even more people’s lives through our amazing assistance dogs. ‘Canine Partners doesn’t receive any government funding and relies solely on donations and legacies so it really will make a difference.” We asked Phil what the hardest part about preparing for the challenge is: ‘Technically it is a very difficult challenge and the more we get into the detail of it, the more problems we are finding that need to be overcome. Then again, we’re trying to go one better than anyone else in the world so it won’t be simple, but
the dream of being the best, and showcasing UK engineering, drives us on. ‘As well as supporting charities, one other thing that I’m really passionate about is showing how exciting careers in engineering and technology are. I give talks to schools and colleges to inspire youngsters to consider a career in engineering as the UK desperately needs more of them.’ The motorbike which broke the UK record for the fastest electric motorcycle spent 2014 at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu as part of their special exhibition ‘Record Breakers’ – for
Britain and the hell of it. And what does the future hold for the widespread use of the electric bike? Phil had this to say: ‘The electric bike market has been a bit slow to take off, mainly because batteries are still quite expensive. Having said that the electric-assist bicycles (pedelecs) are really taking off. The products, whilst not really getting any cheaper, are improving in quality and performance all the time. It’s only a small step from taking the parts found on the highest quality pedelecs to make components for a small motorcycle or moped, so there is certainly technology coming through that will make this possible in only a couple of years. We are in fact working on a prototype electric bike that fits between a bicycle and a moped at the moment’. It’s Valentines Day soon and a chance for us to show our other (possibly better) halves how much we love and appreciate them. Love encompasses many emotions and is a fabulous word. The Ancient Greeks however were keen to differentiate between the various ‘types’ of love. We take a little look:
Philia was seen as a deep but non-intimate bond, as between close friends, family members or a bond forged by soldiers as they fought alongside eachother in battle. It implies that it must be mutual.
love that ‘won’t settle down’ and ‘moves on’ very quickly... Pragma, as the word implies, is a more pragmatic/mature love that develops over a long period of time between long-term couples that rely on eachother and share their lives together. It involves goodwill and commitment, compromise and those who have common goals.
Ludus describes a more playful affection found in fooling around or flirting. It can also indicate a
Agape is a more generalised love, it can be love for all of humanity. It implies more self-sacrifice and a generous love. Eros is literally the love of beauty. It is a highly sensual, passionate style of love. And is all about “chemistry.” and falling in love at first sight. Though interesting, I’m unsure if the Greeks had it right, perhaps just ‘Love’ is a simpler, better word to describe what we all feel and hopefully especially on February 14th.

Valentines Day Facts • About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year. This makes it the second largest seasonal card sending time of the year • In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card. • In Finland Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä, which translates into “Friend’s day”. It’s more about remembering your mates than your loved ones. • Apparently the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn’t write their names signed in front of a witness with an X, apparently the X was then kissed to show their sincerity.

She walks in beauty By Lord Bryon
She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove: O no! it is an ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark, Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.

This Kitchen company, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you might think. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. “Supposing a tree fell down, Pooh, when we were underneath it?” “Supposing it didn’t,” said Pooh after careful thought.
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.”
Piglet was comforted by this. The House at Pooh Corner Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.

Sheffield Forest Sheffield Forest is not far from the Bluebell Railway and is a ‘sister’ forest to nearby, larger Ashdown Forest. It is 300 acres of mixed deciduous and conifer woodland, for the purposes of timber, conservation and recreation. This peaceful woodland site is owned and managed by the Forestry Commission, it is a haven for wildlife, located between Horsted Keynes and Nutley. There is plenty of history still visible to the astute eye. Look carefully and you can discover a wood worked for hundreds of
years for timber, charcoal, building materials, iron, and even rabbits. This forest is part of the High Weald which was, of course, famed for its iron production, reaching its peak in both Roman and then latterly Tudor times. Charcoal was the fuel needed to power the furnaces and forges and we seem to have had plenty in this area. A wealth of archaeological evidence exists on the site; one Sheffield Forest survey discovered remains of no fewer than 34 charcoal burning platforms, where workers would have fired earth-covered clamps to convert wood cut on site into charcoal. These platforms, along with bloomery sites (a type of furnace once widely used for smelting iron) are concentrated
along the sides of a Wealden gill stream. Charcoal platforms are undateable but the bloomery sites may date from the Roman period.

16 small quarry sites have also been identified, which supplied stone or sand for building and surfacing. Good access routes to move all of the materials would also have been essential, and the forest is crisscrossed by trackways – many sunken after centuries of use by humans, animals and carts. Plain timber for building and fuel was an equally important resource. If there were trunks too heavy to be dragged out by horse, saw pits were dug where the “top-dog” and “under-dog” cut planks with a two-man saw. Evidence of 11 saw pits can still be found. In the 14th to 17th centuries, farming rabbits for meat and fur was widespread and essential

for living. Despite being largely wooded, this farming even reached Sheffield Forest. A lease was taken out in 1638 to create a warren (a man-made ‘rabbit farm’) and one of the mounds probably created at this time still exists near the forest’s western boundary.
Historical records reveal that in 1546 the powerful Duke of Norfolk forfeited the forest, and other land, to the Crown. In 1769, the extensive Sheffield Estate, including the forest, was bought by the 1st Earl of Sheffield for £31,000, a not inconsiderable sum at the time! In 1910, this ownership passed to Arthur Soames. The Forestry Commission acquired Sheffield Forest in 1953 when the Sheffield Park Estate was split up – with the famous landscaped gardens passing to the National Trust.
Timber for building and fuel was an equally important resource from the Forest. One can hear crossbills in the tops of pine trees eating pinecones and nightjars churring on summer evenings.
There is on-road parking, limited to a few spaces either side of entrance gateway, on Bell Lane between Nutley and Fletching. With thanks to the Forestry Commission and the High Weald AONB for supplying the information for this article.

The Leap Year Rules Okay Why is February the poor cousin of all the months? Like many other notfully-justified historical occurrences, it suffered at the hands of someone’s ego. Roman emperor Caesar Augustus felt it was unfair that his predecessor Julius Caesar’s month, July (named Caesar Augustus after the great general) had 31 days. Augustus’ namesake-month of August had only 29 days... the injustice of it! So he decided to steal 2 days from February which originally had 30 days. Of all the things that happened during Caesar Augustus’ reign, this one probably passed with the least complaints.
impractical when it came to feast days (let alone birthdays, etc.). It was a convoluted solution to the problem and holidays began sliding into different seasons, this must have aggravated the general populace no end who probably needed (like we all do) regularity to the seasons. Thus Caesar ordered his astronomer, Sosigenes, to simplify things. He needed to base the calendar in use around the actual solar year - the time that the sun takes to return to the exact same position in the cycle of seasons; this is just over 365 days: 365.2422 days, give or take.
However, February has its own speciality by being the only month to be given an extra day every four years. As we know the 29th of the month comes round once every 4 years and it is indeed a special day.
The calendar was later refined further during the reign of Pope Gregory XIII (1582) because adding a day every single four years in fact overcompensates! Therefore there is not strictly speaking a leap year every four years, only 97 years out of every 400 Pope Gregory XIII years are leap years. The rule goes that any year that is divisible by 100 (but not by 400) is not a leap year. So the year 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 100
Sosigenes opted for the 365-day year with an extra day every four years to cover the extra hours. Hence the 29th February was born and regularity of the holidays of the seasons could proceed unhindered.
But what is the history of the 29th? Why a leap year?
Julius Caesar
Going back to the almighty Julius Caesar. When he first came to power, people observed a 355 day calendar, with an extra 22-day month every two years. As you can imagine, this was pretty

and 400) as was the year 1600. But the years 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years, neither will 2100 be a leap year.
A precursor to the suffragette movement perhaps? Women proposing in a leap year is different around the world. For instance, in Denmark, it’s the 24th of February that proposals must take place and a Danish man who refuses the proposal must give the woman 12 pairs of gloves to wear to cover their embarrassment of not having an engagement ring! In Finland, it is not gloves but fabric for a skirt. We’re not sure of the reasoning here but probably just a little something to make up for the heart break... I’m sure either of these gifts were not gratefully received!
Traditions grew up on this auspicious day and the 29th became a welcome respite for women from the domination of the world of men when the tradition grew up of woman being able to propose on that day. One theory goes back to the time when the leap year day of the 29th was not recognised by English law. The premise went that if the day had no legal status, it was acceptable to break with the convention of a man proposing. What other conventions were “justifiably” broken on that day, we can only guess at!
In Greece a whole new tradition arose that marriage in a leap year was considered unlucky, this lead many couples to avoid it. No doubt these superstitions are rarely regarded these days but I would still conjecture that slightly less marriages occur in Greece in such years...
Of course these days women proposing is far less taboo and it is most usually discussed before the question is even popped in any case - still the majority of proposing, as we know, is done by the man. This tradition of the 29th is also disputed to be attributable to St Bridget in the 5th Century. She is said to have complained to St Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose (sigh...). St Patrick thus St Bridget gave women a single day during a leap year to pop the question. Yet another theory is the story that Queen Margaret of Scotland brought into law a setting of fines for men who turned down marriage proposals put to them on a leap year. Sceptics have pointed out that Margaret was five years old at the time and living far away in Norway! So this seems unlikely.
The 29th February 1504 certainly lent a helping hand to Christopher Columbus who purportedly used his knowledge of the solar system and movement of stars to his advantage. The story goes that during his final trip to the West Indies. After months of being stranded in Jamaica, relations with the indigenous population broke down and they refused to continue to help him and his crew with food and provisions. Columbus, knowing a lunar eclipse was due on the 29th, gathered the native chiefs and forewarned them that God was going to punish them for their lack of assistance by painting the moon red. Then during the eclipse, he said that God would withdraw his punishment if they starting co-operating again i.e. giving him the supplies he needed. The panicked chiefs agreed to give him what he wanted and the moon began emerging from its shadow. They say that knowledge is power and this, though unfair, is a good demonstration!
The tradition in practice is not thought to have become commonplace until the 19th Century when some daring women took fate into their own hands.
The chance of being born on a leap day is one in 1,461. So Happy Birthday to any readers who are born on this most special of days.
