Flat roofing

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

A Story of Resilience

The Mystery of the Crowborough Poet “I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:

Miss Haskins did not realise the King was going to quote her words, she explained at the time, “I heard the quotation read in a summary of the speech. I thought the words sounded familiar and suddenly it dawned on me that they were out of my little book.”

“’Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown’. “And he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.” These are the mysterious words with which King George VI ended his Christmas broadcast in1939 to a country at war. They were penned by Crowborough resident Minnie Haskins (1875-1957) and came from a poem of hers called “God Knows”, which was in a collection, “The Desert”, published in 1908. Neither the poem nor its author was well known.

The quotation had been sent to the Royal Family by Jean Allen of Bristol, as “a message of comfort and hope in these dark and terrible days of anxiety”. They had been brought to the King’s attention by his wife (the late Queen Mother) and in fact, those lines were read at her own funeral, many years later.

After the initial famous quotation, the poem continues: So I went forth, And finding the hand of God, Trod gladly into the night. He led me towards the hills And the breaking of day in the lone east. So heart be still! What need our human life to know If God hath comprehension? In all the dizzy strife of things, Both high and low, God hideth his intention.

At the time, the source of the poem could not be found despite an immediate search on both sides of the Atlantic to identify who it was. Google was not available in those days! Minnie gave permission to her brother to reveal to the BBC that she was in fact the mystery author everyone was talking about. Thus he called them on Boxing Day.

The final section runs: God knows. His will Is best. The stretch of years Which wind ahead, so dim To our imperfect vision, Are clear to God. Our fears Are premature. In Him All time hath full provision. Then rest; until God moves to lift the veil From our impatient eyes, When, as the sweeter features Of life’s stern face we hail, Fair beyond all surmise, God’s thought around His creatures Our minds shall fill.

The next day the nation’s press arrived to interview Minnie, a retired tutor at the London School of Economics who was living in Ghyll Road, Crowborough with her two younger sisters. Fame found her overnight! The three sisters had come to Crowborough in 1937 and established Brooklands Pre-Preparatory School. Crowborough historian John Hackworth wrote a short biography of Miss Haskins for inclusion in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Frant

A High Weald Musical Beacon For over a decade St. Alban’s church, in the beautiful village of Frant, not far from the Ashdown Forest, has hosted internationally acclaimed artists from all over the world.

sensitive colouring and exemplary technique. We are pleased to be able to bring to you a Q&A with him, especially prepared for our January issue: When did you realise that being a pianist would become your life and how did this decision then take shape?

The church was rebuilt in 1819-22, replacing a medieval church. The architect was John Montier Senior (who is buried in the churchyard), a builder and architect of Tunbridge Wells. Montier had a fine antiquarian knowledge, and his design is of perpendicular style revived in that era: tall segmented windows in cast iron.

To tell you the truth I never have given that a thought: as far as I can remember, I’ve always been a pianist. I come from a family of musicians, and started playing the piano at the age of three. I was reading musical notes before learning the alphabet. When I was about six, I was surprised to find out that not all kids played the piano! Playing the piano has always been the most natural thing in my life.

The cost of upkeep of this unique building and the very fine organ were the original impetus behind the Frant Concert Series. While the concerts have developed into a major musical landmark in their own right, it is still the case that all profits made from the concerts are dedicated to the maintenance of the church.

You’ve played in concert halls the world over, what is your very favourite venue and why? There are many wonderful venues particularly in Japan, in terms of acoustics and ambiance. I tend to like the modern halls with the simple decor and lots of space. In England we really liked King’s Place, wonderful acoustics and such a nice atmosphere. I hope they will have more regular series so that we could come back and play there. What is the highlight of your career thus far? For the two of us, playing in the Sydney Opera House, with the SSO and Maestro Ashkenazy, to premiere the two piano concerto written for us by Matthew Hindson.

Pascal and Ami Rogé This January the internationally acclaimed piano virtuoso Pascal Rogé will be performing in St. Albans with his wife Ami. A professional musician and pianist since he first started winning awards at public performances aged only 9, Pascal has played all over the world and worked with every major symphony orchestra. Pascal has a particular affinity with French musicians and the programme will include Debussy, Ravel and Fauré. His playing combines Gallic elegance, charm and humour with

For what reason do you think spousal artistic partnerships such as yours and Ami’s work? On the practical level, it is great to be able to travel together, and work on many projects together as a team. We also feel more connected on a deeper level as a couple through music: there is something very intimate about joint music making, and all the more so as a couple.

What is the most challenging part to playing as a concert pianist, across the world?

Album of 2015, Carolyn’s voice has been described by the Telegraph as “her pure soprano cossets the words, savouring their expressive implications, relishing their shifts of rhythm and subtly sighing with bliss”.

Traveling pianists not only have to quickly adapt to new venues, but also with different instruments each time. We are always going from different places and different countries. I have no problems with jet lags, but Ami suffers from it from time to time.

Details: Frant Church, Friday 22nd January at 8pm (doors open 7.30pm), Tickets £18.

Your programme in Frant is almost exclusively French composers, would you describe yourself as being patriotic, or having a special affinity with your countrymen? I don’t consider myself patriotic, but French music is my maternal language. I’ve grown up with it, have played it since my childhood, and my teachers come from a long lineage of French Piano School, such as Marguerite Long, Lucette Descaves, Nadia Boulanger, etc. I feel most comfortable with the French repertoire. French music offers more opportunities to explore different colours, sound effects, and gives more freedom of interpretation and imagination. Quotes about the Roges: “An astonishing control of the piano which results in the most delicious, sparkling palette of sounds” (The Cross-eyed pianist) “Rogé is magical” (Piano Magazine) “Every note and nuance was colored with sensitivity and beauty” (The Straits Times) Details: Frant Church, Friday 29th January at 8pm (doors open 7.30pm). Tickets £18, www.frantmusic.org.uk.

January Recipe for a Happy New Year Author Unknown Take twelve whole months. Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness, hate, and jealousy. Make them just as fresh and clean as possible. Now cut each month into twenty-eight, thirty, or thirty-one different parts, but don’t make up the whole batch at once. Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients. Mix well into each day one part of faith, one part of patience, one part of courage, and one part of work. Add to each day one part of hope, faithfulness, generosity, and kindness. Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation, and one good deed. Season the whole with a dash of good spirits, a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play, and a cup full of good humor.

Carolyn Sampson

Pour all of this into a vessel of love. Cook thoroughly over radiant joy, garnish with a smile, and serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness. You’re bound to have a happy new year.

And with a true stroke of luck this January, Frant Concert Series has been able to secure another memorable feast for your ears with soprano Carolyn Sampson who will be accompanied by Joseph Middleton, her collaborator on several albums. Winner of Gramophone Magazine

Championing Charity would return to the UK and help to spread awareness among our own young people. We created a “tree of hands” to create a visual link between UK schools and Chanzige. The leaves of the tree were made from coloured hands which UK children had written their hopes and aspirations on. The Chanzige children did the same and their hands were bought back to the UK to be displayed here.

Two years ago during a ‘year out’, Philipa Jacobs visited Chanzige Primary School in Southern Tanzania. She found, like many schools in Tanzania, it was horrendously under resourced, with little access to basic needs such as pens, pencils and paper; all the things that our own children take for granted. On her return to West Hoathly, she set up a small charity, Champion Chanzige, to help the school and local community in that village. The charity will remain small and will have minimal overheads with no salaries, rent payable or even the costs of flights over to Tanzania, etc. This fact is wonderful in that you can be assured that any donation made will go directly to the school, even (and this is important) the gift aid! Not many larger charities can promise the same.

for funding. With 6 members on the committee, 2 cousins recently became junior trustee member. Here is a Q&A with Phillippa about her recent visit in October: When you went out to Tanzania in October what was the main purpose of your visit and what did you manage to accomplish? By taking people that work in primary schools out to Tanzania I hoped to raise awareness of the difficulties these children face, I hoped that the staff members

Prior to our arrival the charity had raised money to renovate two classrooms, the heavy work had been done by the time we arrived and we all helped to get the rooms decorated and some displays on the wall. Andy Dobson, a teacher from Escots primary school in East Grinstead, was on the trip with us and whilst in Tanzania took film footage of what he saw. He has returned to the UK and gave the footage to his Year 6 pupils, who have made a film, comparing the two ways of life, which will be shown at Chequer Mead Theatre.

Champion Chazinge has recently gained charitable status and can now apply to bigger companies

the children had an opportunity to learn but the adults in the community could make use of it too. After school, adult learners come to the school for IT lessons. They are charged an absolute minimum, just enough to cover the cost of the electricity. The same applies to the community centre, we want everyone to benefit, we hope to make it accessible to disabled people too. Tell us about the new trustees that have just come on board?

What are your immediate plans? We are now working hard to raise sufficient money to renovate the local community centre which sits in the grounds of the school. The building has no windows, doors, electricity or toilets. We want to address all of these issues and make create a building fit for purpose. What do you find most heartening about working in Changize within the community there? The children at Chanzige primary school are the happiest I have ever met: they have so little but make the best of their circumstances. The children consider an education a privilege and are desperate to learn. The community spirit within the whole community is astonishing and something that would never be seen in the UK. It is quite humbling to be able to offer a small amount of support. Any funny stories that emerged from your recent time there? There are always funny stories,

but they may not be fit for publishing! The ladies of the community like nothing better than ‘a girls night out’! Having asked their husbands for permission to leave the family home for an evening, they love to tell us ladies from the UK about their tribal traditions and what is expected of them as a wife. What was your highlight there? As so many of us travelled out to Tanzania this year we were able to take nearly £2000 of teaching resources with us. Watching the teaching staff unpack the resources and exclaim at what they were coming across was an absolute highlight of this trip. How has the charity engaged with the local area? Although the charity has been set up to support the primary school primarily, when taking on a larger project we try and include the whole community in our planning and thinking. When we renovated our first classroom, putting in electricity and providing PCs etc., we decided to make this a community learning centre so that not only

14

We have recently appointed two junior trustees, Elodie Ansell and Emma Harding. They have always been very supportive of the charity and we wanted to have a young persons perspective on fundraising, etc. We also have a Junior Committee at Chanzige as we like to ask the children directly what changes they would like to see at their school and we hope that all our junior contributors will communicate with each other. What further support do you need? At the moment it is all systems go to raise the £11,000 needed to renovate the community centre. We are making and selling candles, Escots school are holding a fund raiser at Chequer Mead and we have a quiz night in January. Looking further ahead we are having a fundraising camping weekend in July 2016 and are still looking for some musical entertainment. A Healthy Soup, perfect to boost your immune system this winter Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 25 mins

This gorgeous green soup is full of vegetables that kids might not like to eat - so don’t tell them what’s in it! Serve with a slice of wholemeal bread.

What to do: 1. Put the leeks, broccoli and potatoes into a large saucepan and add the stock. 2. Heat until just boiling, and then turn the heat down. Cook over a low heat with the lid on for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. 3. Add the spinach and cook gently for another 2-3 minutes, until the leaves wilt down. 4. Blend the soup to a puree using a handheld stick blender, or transfer it to a food processor or blender and whizz until smooth. Add the milk and reheat gently, seasoning with ground black pepper. Serve, garnished with a few spinach leaves if you like and a slice of wholemeal bread.

Ingredients: 2 leeks washed and sliced 250g broccoli broken into florets 250g potatoes peeled and chopped 600ml vegetable or chicken stock 100g spinach washed 300m milk 1 pinch ground black pepper

Tip 1: Cover, cool and refrigerate the soup, using it within 3 days of making it, and re-heating it thoroughly when ready to serve. Tip 2: You could use 2 medium onions instead of the leeks, if you prefer.

Need to make changes this 2016? The Forest Row Village Support Network (FRVSN) is a project which enlists the help of volunteers to provide various kinds of support for the more mature residents of the village, as well as for the vulnerable. Initially the committee distributed questionnaires to around half the households in Forest Row. Those returned confirmed our assessment of the support needed and we have subsequently been able to provide assistance and support to those who need it most. For this we need volunteers to help with the following: BEFRIENDING Many senior citizens who are largely housebound welcome a visit by an approved volunteer for a friendly chat and maybe help with shopping. Need an excuse for a fantastic night in?

How to throw a Burns Night guide January really needs a bit of brightening up so why not celebrate the life of the Scottish Bard on the 25th? Every year Scotland raises a glass in patriotic celebration of Robert (Rabbie) Burns. We all love a bit of tartan and dancing, so why you not treat yourself and your friends to a traditional Burns Night.

‘n’ tatties cake, a take on a potato rosti that’s served in wedges. 4.

Whisky Sauce: scotch-filled drams is central to Burns Night. Whisky can be used in cooking too, just one way: heat double cream in a pan over a medium heat, then add a splash of whisky and simmer to burn off the alcohol.

5.

Cranachan: Yet more whisky is called for in this traditional dessert of cream, fruit and oatmeal. You can use heather honey for extra authenticity.

6.

A master of ceremonies - a foolhardy chairman. Plus celebrants - you and your drouthy cronies.

7.

And always a good scotch drink to keep your cockles warm.

8.

For a more traditional party, add Rabbie Burns poetry readings, dancing and even some piped music if you can.

You will need: 1.

A warm, friendly place to gather (gracious host).

2.

Plenty of Haggis: love it or loathe it, haggis is the symbolic heart of Burns Night. If you’re not lucky enough to live near a traditional Scottish butcher (unlikely in the South East), you can lay your hands on traditional haggis online. It can be baked or boiled, and there are numerous versions, from vegetarian to venison. Be brave!

3.

Whatever format you decide, central to the revelry, however, is always a hearty supper. The idea is to motivate guests to be pro-active participants, rather than passive spectators. If you can get everyone taking part in a sing/song, spot of poetry, etc. then you are onto a Burns Night winner! Of course, it helps if you know your guests and can match them with a suitable reading. Happy Burns Night!

Neeps to go around: this mixture of swede and potato is the mandatory Burns Night accompaniment to haggis. You can go for a coarse finish and roast the potatoes as well as boiling them. Or you may prefer to mash the two vegetables down to a smooth purée, which works beautifully with an oaty haggis. If you fancy breaking with convention, try a crispy neeps

A Story of Resilience end. So far I have had a lot of positive feedback from friends and family.

Local Hartfield author David Burt has just had his new book ‘Short Surprises’ published. It is a collection of short stories based upon real events which illustrate the drama and difficulties in life. Which may, when they occur, seem insurmountable, but can with patience, determination, luck, and help from others, turn events on their head, with surprising benefits to those involved!

In brief what is your favourite musing of the book? No one can predict the future, and there are times when destiny appears to have been set in stone, and what will happen, will happen. However dark and depressing the situation seems, there are always opportunities by which the strength, resilience, and basic determination of the human spirit, can turn a negative situation into a success.

During his career David has been County Chairman for the CBI, an electrical connectors for Formula 1 race cars and on the Advisory Council for the BBC. He is a lifelong sculptor and has exhibited at the RA Summer Exhibition, he also rallies classic cars.

So when real life situations present themselves, as they do in these stories, the outcome can often be surprisingly uplifting and positive.

Here is a ‘Q&A’ with David:

In summary, what message do you hope to convey?

What inspired you to write this book, please give a little background?

I’m a believer in optimism and that’s what I want to achieve; to give people a sense of optimism throughout the stories.

Now in my third age as I refer to it, I’m still working. I’ve always written for my children and now my grandchildren. It all started off really in January 2015 in Auckland, New Zealand; my eldest daughter Sallyanne said I should write books and I’ve not stopped since. I tend to write from my own experiences. In each story there’s a surprise at the

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation presents

WILDLIFE ARTIST of the YEAR Hammerwood resident, David Shepherd CBE, is known principally for his wildlife art. With a career that spans over 60 years his back catalogue is an impressive one that includes iconic images of elephants and his stunning portrayal of a snarling tiger ‘Tiger Fire’. But it is for his services to conservation that he was awarded a CBE in 2008, recognising the contribution that he and his eponymous charity, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, have made to protecting endangered wildlife for over 30 years. The annual Wildlife Artist of the Year competition that David established in 2007 brings his two great passions together and with

spectacular results. “It is inspiring that so many like-minded artists support the annual competition,” says David

Shepherd. “Like me, they utilise their art to give something back to the animals and landscapes that inspire them and together we raise tens of thousands for conservation projects in Africa and Asia while putting on a spectacular show at the Mall Galleries in London each year.” With a revised look and feel, the 2016 Wildlife Artist of the Year competition is open for entries until 15 February 2016. There are seven new categories designed to inspire and to suit all artistic styles with everything from original prints and sculpture to mixed media and installations welcome. “In all categories the judges - made up of fellow artists, conservationists and art critics - are looking not only for beautifully executed original works but also imaginative interpretation, moving away from the purely photographic to compositions with great

ONE MAN, ONE VISION By Harry Townsend of East Grinstead

When my wife Myfanwy was diagnosed with melanoma at the age of 48, we knew nothing about this disease - it’s possible that it could be attributed to her getting badly sunburnt on the beach at Skegness as a child. Unfortunately the cancer spread and she died twelve years later in 1999. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and is also the most rapidly increasing cancer amongst young people: It affected 1 in 1500 in the 1930s, now it affects 1 in 65. So myself and our three sons set up the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund to raise awareness, educate and fund practical research. In 2013 we launched an initiative, the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, to encourage children to enjoy themselves outdoors but to stay safe in the sun (www. oksunsafetycode.com). Presenter Julia Bradbury is our main ambassador, alongside a wide array of high profile sportspeople and we have the support of 100 of the national governing bodies of sport and outdoor activity associations and groups. We are very proactive in the community and will be increasing our work with local schools in 2016. Recently I decided I had to do something that makes people realise that I’m prepared to go beyond the bounds of normal common sense, because my objective means so much to me! I

did lots of fundraising ‘challenges’ in the past 10 years (in my 70’s) such as pushing my wheelbarrow ‘George’ from end to end of the North Island of New Zealand: but in those days I was fit and active, running obscure marathons (Death Valley, etc.) or trekking the Grand Canyon from rim to rim.

25 years! I start by warming up on the bike or the treadmill, I then go on to complete 3000 metres, or 5000 metres, or (hopefully) more at a time, keeping this steady as I progress towards the million target. Please do track my progress; I keep the website and the JustGiving page updated.

Now, aged 80 next summer, I can hardly walk, but I can ‘row’ on a rowing machine in the gym. This is the basis of what will probably be my final major challenge, so it’s got to be out of the ordinary! I’ve always loved indoor rowing so that helps; I’ve twice rowed a non-stop marathon at the Kings Centre, East Grinstead (42,195 metres), and with the enthusiastic support of the staff there, this is my personal mission:

Shortly we’ll be putting on a one day event at the There will also be a wonderful one day event at the Kings Centre this month. This will be a Million Metres Non-stop Community Row, taking place in the foyer where we invite supporters to ‘row’ the magic million metres in a ‘tag’ relay as a further fundraiser, and of course I’ll be joining in. I am also urging people to download one of my sponsor forms from the website and take it round to their friends and work colleagues. Lots of people have put down £5, or even more, which is fantastic, of course! But if you have the chance, instead of ‘£5’, why not write down five members of your family (or friends) with £1 each? That gives us FIVE SPONSORS: and remember, we want A MILLION SPONSORS!

ONE MAN - ONE MILLION METRES - ONE MILLION SPONSORS - ONE MILLION POUNDS It has a nice ring about it! Obviously, it’s impossible to row a million metres non-stop, so it’s an ongoing target, rowing a few thousand metres most days, keeping people up-to-date with the ‘running’ (rowing) total on our website and hoping, as it rises, people will want to add their sponsorship on my JustGiving page, www.justgiving.com/harrytownsend2, before I reach the ‘magic million’!

Is there a Guinness Book of Records record in the offing? I want US (because it’s not just ME, it’s US) to set an unbeatable world record for a) most sponsors for person for one event and b) to raise a million pounds: and it will be based on this, the most the most wonderful part of Sussex.

It’s got to go viral to be a success, but it can only do this with support and this must surely start in my home community (East Grinstead and surrounding villages). We’ve made it even easier to help too. You can either visit our website at www.melanoma-fund.co.uk or text HMMM80 to 70700 and donation £1 that way. My training has consisted of getting down to the Kings Centre; I’ve been a member there for some

Wakehurst’s Wonderful Year Ahead

©Jim Holden

I grew up among the wild hills and dales of the Yorkshire Moors, which is where my lifelong love of nature and landscape comes from. Ever since, I have been an avid traveler, and love to immerse myself in the sublime experience of nature in whichever part of the globe I visit.

Late last year the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew announced the appointment of Tony Sweeney as the new Director of Wakehurst - Kew’s country estate. In early November he took the helm, during the attraction’s golden jubilee year. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Tony has a keen interest in connections between the arts, science, creativity and learning to engage people in cultural and environmental issues. Here is an interview with Tony, with his plans for the year ahead:

By trade, I have been a publisher; worked in open learning and television; then at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford I directed one of the first large National Lottery funded projects, re-inventing the museum in the late-1990s.

Congratulations, you were recently appointed Director of Wakehurst. What is your background and how did you come to have such a prestigious appointment?

For the past decade I have been living in the vibrant city of Melbourne in Australia, where I was Director of the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. This was a brand-new cultural centre for public exhibitions, festivals and live events in moving image art, film and digital media. By the time I left, ACMI had become the world’s highest attended and broadest-ranging film and moving image centre.

©Jim Holden

Though I love Australia, after a decade away from the UK and family, I missed the culture and green landscapes of the UK, and decided to return. Visiting Wakehurst for the first time earlier this year, I can only say I was completely ‘blown away’ by its inspiring beauty, and richness of landscape and plant life. My great interest has always been in finding fresh ways to communicate with and engage a wide range of publics - from young kids to aficionados - in creative and cultural subjects and activity. And

The Radley-Smith family switched on the Christmas tree lights with Tony Sweeney, Wakehurst’s new director.

that is the link with Wakehurst: a place to connect my career developing innovative, exciting public institutions with my love of nature, place and design.

in around 1365 and still looking fresh today! Fundamentally, I’d wish to carry on the pioneering spirit which has always driven and created the foundations for the Wakehurst we see today - love of nature, a spirit of enquiry, and the enthusiasm to explore and share its astonishing diversity.

2. What are some of your tentative plans for the coming year? What are you most excited about? I see the wonderful wild green spaces of Wakehurst as a place to engage people through the senses and the mind with the environment, nature - and plants, on which all life ultimately depends.

How do you hope Wakehurst will engage within the local area? The High Weald landscape here is of real European significance, and we are lucky to be located so centrally within this tremendous countryside, as well as being not far from London. Simply as a natural resource for all to visit, whether for a calming walk or for participating in lively seasonal events, Wakehurst is peerless.

Wakehurst has several hundred acres of immensely rich and varied landscapes, organised botanically and covering many of the world’s temperate woodland regions. There are formal decorative gardens, arboreta, nature reserves, and the worldrenowned Millennium Seed Bank devoted to world plant conservation.

We also engage with local communities and interest groups. Recently, for example, we had apprentices from the Kent Woodland Scheme participating in woodland work. We also have strong links into schools, who use our gardens and labs to learn about botanic science and environmental issues.

I’d like to bring new things to add to the already varied offer at Wakehurst, so that both seasoned visitors and newcomers can experience nature through fresh eyes - and be inspired as it evolves over the seasons and the years. For example, new meadowland is being opened which we will see start to flourish from next year. Also, during our Wild Wood Weekend, we will open up coppiced woods for special public access, charcoal making and hedge-laying among other activities. People will learn how woods are managed; children and families will be able to experience and enjoy this together.

At another end, I also want to communicate better the major international projects we are undertaking. The Millennium Seed Bank, for instance, houses and researches rare and endangered plants to understand evolving issues in biodiversity and practical applications of crop wild relatives. We would like to wish Tony and Wakehurst all the best for a fabulous year ahead.

I’d like to develop new live events and activities to show the landscape - and especially the botanical science underpinning our work here - from different perspectives. What part will conservation play in the year ahead at Wakehurst? Our conservational principles and practices and are centrally important, and done to very high standards. But it is not just about ‘maintaining our woodland’, not just about keeping it the same. Individual planted beds need to be kept fresh through interesting design ideas, or to incorporate new specimens. Woodland areas need constant maintenance to remove diseased or damaged trees, and to ensure light gets in to allow new growth. On a larger scale and time horizon, climate change is inevitably affecting the ecology of our entire estate. We need to be responsive to the changes in plant life this will bring. But we also need to preserve many of our iconic beauties - such as our oldest tree, planted

This Kitchen company, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”.

She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you might think.

Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Call Rachael for a free quotation & advice call on 01342 313133 Visit their showroom: 88 London Road, East Grinstead www.kitchensbespoke.co.uk

8 ways to help you beat the January Blues With party season over, short days and less sunlight, the January blues can sometimes set in. So we’ve come up with 8 ways to help you beat them this month:

be exactly what you need during this cold month. Face-to-face human contact is always preferable to chatting on social networking sites. You might even like to try arranging a Burns Night celebration, see our article.

1. Exercise more

4. Join an interest/activity group

Even a brisk walk every day will help! It boosts your energy levels and helps with the release of endorphins - naturally occurring chemicals that make us feel happier. Also be sure to get some daily fresh air into your lungs: the Victorians knew the benefits of fresh air and we are lucky it’s very fresh indeed in this neck of the woods!

Joining a club, a gym or local sports club can be a great way to meet some new people and to have regular contact with people who share similar interests or hobbies. 5. Set yourself goals Setting attainable goals with step-by-step plans to achieve them, can make everything feel more realistic, all you need to do is take the first step and give yourself a pat on the back with each step you accomplish! Why not treat yourself as a reward as you go along and before you know it you will have achieved your goal. 6. Do Something you’re good at

2. Take care to really eat well and take a Vitamin D supplement (or eat food rich in Vitamin D)

Having fun is essential to life. Doing an activity you enjoy probably means you’re good at it and achieving something boosts your self-esteem and sense of wellbeing and accomplishment.

Good nutrition is essential for your body and thus your mind. Comfort food like pizza or chocolate might sound appealing in the moment, but the high blood sugar level can give you a real downer after and is not good for your body. Eating plenty of omega-3 rich food like oily fish, nuts & seeds, fruit and especially not forgetting the all important daily greens which give your body what it wants! We also need to top up on the essential Vitamin D because of the lack of sunlight during this time of year.

7 Get restful sleep The benefit of a good night’s sleep can not be over-estimated. Maintain a good schedule for restful sleep, go to bed by the clock and your whole next day will look more positive. 8. Watch some comedy Laughing is great for the soul and can release pent up tension. Putting on your favourite stand up comedian DVD or making sure you hang out with that hilarious friend of yours can be a great move to keep yourself laughing through this colder month.

3. Be sociable It’s not as easy going out after the Christmas party season is over but staying tucked up at home might not be the best thing. Catching up with friends, even over an innocent coffee can

Good luck!

The yearly calendar includes 8 monthly meetings starting and ending in September with the AGM. There is no meeting in December and 3 summer meetings are outings and/or visits in June, July and August. The importance of the history group to the community is considerable. Many families have a multi-generational connection to the village and there is no doubt that family history is a real interest for many people these days. Much work has been done on the local war memorials, even adding names, supported by the parish council. A large number of the houses in the High Street and Church Street are of considerable antiquity, many having been built as Hall houses and thus of historical significance. The benefits of becoming a member are clearly to learn more about the village, it also provides a platform for local people to talk on and share their own particular interests and subjects with an audience. For more information see www. hartfieldhistorygroup.org.uk. January Event Thursday 28th January at 7:30pm, the Village Hall. Pie & Mash Supper followed by: Hartfield - Then and Now This will take the form of a Power Point presentation of photos, pictures, drawings and maps showing many aspects of the local area and the village ‘then’ and ‘now’, to show just how little or how much things have changed. A real reminder for those who have lived here for many years and a wonderful introduction to those who are new to the area.
