Januarys Gone By January 15th
This month can feel a tad non-eventful, so we searched to find some events of significance and possible inspiration...
In 1559 Elizabeth I was crowned Queen of England at the age of 25. This ushered in a new golden age of renaissance and 'Royal Britannia'.
January 4th
January 24th
Birthday of Louis Braille in 1809. Blinded as a boy, he later invented a reading system for the blind using punch marks in paper which is still in use today.
The first boy scout troop organized here in England by Robert Baden-Powell in 1908. January 26th
January 7th
This may not be 'inspirational' but it is significant. In 1788 the British established a settlement at Sydney Harbour in Australia as 11 ships with 778 convicts arrived, setting up a penal colony to relieve overcrowded prisons in England.
In 1620 Galileo Galilei sighted four of Jupiter's moons! January 10th In 1918 the House of Lords gave its approval to the 'Representation of the People Bill'; this gave woman over the age of 30 the right to vote and was a significant start to fully giving women equal rights to men to vote.
January 27th The birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1756. He was born in Salzburg, Austria. The child prodigy started composing at the age of five, through to his untimely death at the age of 35. A musical genius the like of which had never been witnessed created over 600 compositions including 16 operas, 41 symphonies, 27 piano and five violin concerti, 25 string quartets, 19 masses, and many other works in his short life.
January 13th (There may be mixed feelings about this one but worth sharing for its great significance nonetheless!) The birth of a new political party as James Keir Hardie united the socialists under the banner of the Labour Representation Committee. January 15th The birthday of Martin Luther King in 1929. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. As an African American civil rights leader he spoke eloquently and stressed nonviolent methods to achieve equality, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968. In 1983, the third Monday in January was designated a legal holiday in the US to celebrate his birthday.

Winnie-The-Pooh: The Most Famous Bear In The World
Credit: Channel 4 Television
Titchmarsh sets out to discover why A A Milne, already a successful playwright, changed direction and decided to write for children. What was different about these stories and why did so many parents and children fall in love with them? How did the marriage of A A Milne’s words and E H Shepard’s illustrations add an extra layer of magic dust to the stories?
To help celebrate Pooh in his 90th year, this documentary hosted by Alan Titchmarsh just aired on New Year’s Eve on Channel 4.
Alan discovers that, prior to Pooh, children’s literature had been very different and that one of the reasons that Milne’s books were so successful was that they created a new, warmer vision of childhood. Alan interviews Ann Thwaite, Milne’s award-winning
biographer, children’s author Brian Sibley, social historian Hester Barron and Kathryn Aalto, author of ‘The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh’. Of the documentary Kathryn had this to say: ‘I was delighted to be asked to participate in this Channel 4 documentary, “Winniethe-Pooh: The World’s Most Famous Bear”. Arguably, the Winnie books are the most beloved ever written and this year we are celebrating the 90th anniversary of the first book in 1926. ‘What is remarkable is that the real setting that inspired AA Milne to write the books looks much like it did 90 years ago. You can still walk in Ashdown Forest and see the places that
Kathryn Aalto
Much of the documentary sees Alan literally walk in the footprints of A A Milne and the paw prints of Winnie-thePooh to discover why, after 90 years, we all still love this bear of very little brain. Alan travels to Pooh Country to the Hundred Acre Wood in Ashdown Forest to see the locations that inspired the books as well as the Milnes’ family home, Cotchford Farm. In this documentary Alan

inspired the stories. When I tell people this on my speaking tours in the United States, they are amazed. And people in the Ashdown Forest area might not think this is important, but can you think of other literary landscapes that are preserved? A few -- Beatrix Potter, Henry David Thoreau -- but it’s not common. ‘There was great creativity and humour amongst the production team on the often cold outdoor “set”. As the author of The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh, I led Alan Titchmarsh to places in the landscape that inspired Milne to write the stories, and sort of chattily interpreted them for him. This included Poohsticks Bridge and The Enchanted Place.’ You can still see it on Channel 4 Catch Up!

OLDE ‘TALES OF ALBION’ Last month saw the release on DVD of a new film. Nothing unusual about that, except this was an independent feature by local film-makers Joy and Gary Andrews, also known as Egotrip Media Ltd, and large sections of it were shot in Ashdown Forest. The film is called “Tales of Albion” and it consists of 8 tales woven together by a storyteller (Robin of Sherwood’s Sheriff of Nottingham, Nickolas Grace) that re-tell old British myths, legends and folklore. The writer/director explains:
the darkness – and tell these old tales. Today, this light in the darkness is the TV in the corner, so it seemed to make sense to shoot it as a movie. The films are set in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales – as well as Ancient Greece and modern Afghanistan – but as a self-financed project we couldn’t afford to travel very far. Ashdown Forest, with its incredible variety of landscapes, gave us the opportunity (with a little sneaky digital addition here and there) to shoot pretty much the whole film locally.”
“We are all familiar with Greek, Roman and Norse mythology but what is not so widely known is that we too have a rich mythology of our own. It’s something that has always fascinated me and I wanted to tell some of those stories. In times gone by, storytellers would sit by the fire – a flickering light in
Indeed, except for a couple of scenes shot on a family holiday by the coast in Cornwall, one day at a Saxon longhouse in Kent and one shoot at the Weald and Downland Museum in Singleton, Ashdown Forest stood in for pretty much everywhere!
Filming began late January, 2013, when the snow was still on the ground, with a scene set in the Highlands of Scotland (actually next to a car park in the woods near Forest Row) and the final shoot (save for a couple of later ‘pick-ups’) was 18 months later, again in Ashdown Forest, filming King Arthur being handed Excalibur by the Lady of the Lake. The cast are a mix of professional actors and local performers, as well as historic re-enactors. Once the filming was over however, that was far from the end of the process, as Joy explains. “The next 2 years were spent in postproduction, which is where I took over – editing, mixing the sound and adding over 400 special effects shots.” Continues over the page.

Fascinating East Grinstead
Connections of the Rich and Famous By Robin Whalley
Wisley, Surrey, and presented it to the Royal Horticultural Society! Photo by kind permission of Richard Pearson FRAS
Frederick Hanbury was naturally very wealthy and, as well as being interested in botany, he was a horticulturist specialising particularly in orchids. His extensive orchid houses were world-renowned and tended by a large staff at Brockhurst (see glasshouses on the 1931 OS map below).
Patrick Moore Aged 13
East Grinstead resident Dr Richard Beeching, the famous (and sometimes infamous) physicist and engineer, responsible for making swingeing cuts to railways in Britain in the 1960s, lived at Brockhurst, a fine arts and crafts house on the Lewes Road, just south of East Grinstead.

Many years earlier the house had been known as Ashurst Lodge (OS Map 1875) up until around 1899 when its name was changed to Brockhurst. Frederick J Hanbury had bought the Brockhurst estate in 1908 and over the next twenty years refurbished the house and laid out the gardens, for which the site became renowned. The Hanbury family were the owners of the well-known Allen & Hanburys pharmaceutical company: one of the first manufacturers of cod liver oil in Great Britain, makers of medicated pastilles as well as being the developers of the asthma treatment, “Ventolin”, in the late 1960s. The Hanburys were also well known as a family of gardeners. Frederick Hanbury’s cousin was Sir Thomas Hanbury (1832-1907) who laid out the gardens at La Mortola, near Ventimiglia in Liguria, northern Italy. In fact in 1903 the very same Sir Thomas bought the 60-acre estate at

Hanbury carried out an extensive scheme of planting and landscaping during his ownership of the Brockhurst estate. In 1910 he had already embarked on the construction of a rock garden using stone brought in from a local source. When digging planting holes for rhododendrons, he exposed an outcrop of Lower Tunbridge Wells sandstone which lay close below the surface and which he described as ‘a fine mass of solid rock, some 30 feet thick’ ( ref: The Garden 1924). This he uncovered,

satisfaction. Bush retired at the age of 84 and entered Sackville College in January 1924 “…at a fee of £100 a year”. (Sackville College is a Jacobean almshouse founded in 1609 by Robert Sackville the 2nd Earl of Dorset and which still provides sheltered accommodation for the elderly to this day.) Thomas Bush died in 1928 at Sackville College and his fellow “brothers” and “sisters” followed him to the gates before a funeral service in the College Chapel.
quarried, and built up with the help of the head gardener to form a great ravine, cave and rockery. The feature was then planted with a wide range of species, both exotics and natives; the water from a number of springs was harnessed to feed a variety of waterworks. The results of this labour of love must have been a fantastic sight! Another of Hanbury’s interests was astronomy and he set up an observatory at Brockhurst soon after purchasing the estate, initially with a 6-inch Cooke “equatorial refractor” telescope. He employed a well-known astronomer, William Sadler Franks, as an observer, also in part to host Hanbury’s many guests on visits to the observatory.

This Kitchen company, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you might think. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Hanbury’s astronomer William Franks made many detailed observations of the colours of stars and “wide double stars” (published 1914-20), the moon, planets, nebulae and any passing comets over the years of his employment. He also hosted many visits to the observatory by distinguished guests whilst acting for Hanbury, including Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden. In August 1933 one of the guests for dinner was his neighbour, a certain Mr Moore who lived opposite Brockhurst in Worsted Lane, accompanied by his wife and 10-year-old son Patrick... Impressed by what he saw, the young Patrick visited the observatory the next week and returned many times thereafter to star gaze with Franks. The later to be ‘Sir Patrick’ said in a subsequent paper of Franks “… taught me most of what I know….” and “…took me under his wing and taught me how to make astronomical observations. He was in his eighties and just about five foot tall with a long white beard and always wore a skull cap so that he looked exactly like a gnome.”
house. The rock garden, for which Hanbury’s scheme was renowned, does survive however, within the gardens to Barton Pines, a house built in the 1950s.

The author wishes to thank Mr Richard Pearson FRAS for providing much of the material for this article and for his permission to reproduce the photographs of the Brockhurst Observatory.
When Franks died at the age of 85, Hanbury invited 14- year-old Patrick Moore to take charge of the observatory. Sir Patrick further commented, “Hanbury was then over ninety, and he gave me a surprise. Sometimes he needed an astronomer to “show stars” to his guests; would I like to fill this role? If so, I could take charge of the observatory. You can well imagine that it did not take long for me to make up my mind. It is not every 14-year-old who has the chance to be an Observatory Director!” Patrick carried on this role until the start of the Second World War, when the observatory was dismantled. Trees now grow over the site of the Brockhurst Observatory but “Starfield”, the house in Lewes Road where William Franks lived and where Patrick Moore spent many happy hours learning about the stars, is still there today.

PARENTAL MUSINGS FOR T HE NEW YEAR
NOT EVERY CHILD IS AN A GRADE STUDENT. WHY WE MUST NOT LET B/C/D BE SHAMEFUL. Local blogger Alice Wilde, halfwavinghalfdrowning.com, brings us her must-read advice for 2017 I’m about to go on a rant. I hate homework. Controversial, as I’ve been a teacher for 22 years and I’ve personally set hundreds of hours of homework in that time. But I am becoming increasingly aware of a society in which the only results that anyone wants for children, be it parental or for school statistics, are the bloomin’ As and A*s. I remember knowing that my peers who scored As were those who were exceptional in that subject. An accident of genetics had made them shine at art, or music or maths. They were in the top 2% of the class. That is why they got an A (there were no A*s back then – and that’s another issue – making the top even higher and wider so even more people feel they have to cram themselves in). I remember feeling happy for them and not feeling worried that it wasn’t me. There were loads of us in the B and C group and we were fine.
want, “the only valid currency” as I heard the Headmaster sadly reflect. Bs and Cs are not good enough any more it would seem (and ‘D’, did you say ‘D’? I’m so sorry). And how the hell do you get normal, happy, perfectly able and fine children to get the As and A*s that really should be awarded to only a tiny percentage of the most naturally able? You make them work, work, work. You put the pressure on from the age of four. Six hours of school work at school isn’t enough, so you set homework to reinforce and consolidate everything. We can have everything we want at any moment we want it. We are
Yet here we are with A grades being the standard we all
the generation where every desire can be granted - pizza at 3am with one phone call, strawberries in January – so surely it is also possible that all of our children can be leaping in a line and grinning, holding that slip of paper telling them they have 10 A*s on results day? We can make this happen. Can’t we? We shouldn’t bloomin’ have to. They shouldn’t bloomin’ have to. That’s my rant. We have to find a way to bring the bar back down. NOT to be confused with lowering expectation or hope, and not to say that only the 2% of naturals should go forth and dominate – I just wish

that we could find a way to allow our children some freedom from this pressure while they are growing and working out how to see themselves. Unless we can, we are sending a MASSIVE percentage of children the message that they are failing. They should be getting As and they are not. NO THEY SHOULD NOT BE GETTING As. We cannot all be good at everything. It’s ridiculous. It invalidates the whole point of an A. No wonder they’ve had to change to a system where GCSE will be awarded levels up to 9… You want to know why? So they can add more to the top, a level 10 / 11 …. They ran into a problem with A, A*, A**; it had started to get silly.
been blessed with the paper recording and memory skills of a Dickensian bookkeeper, you may find yourself dreading homework. The ruination of weekends. The axe hanging over your freedom to visit your family, to go swimming, to camp out. That bloomin’ MyMaths, the physics project. My advice? Do not stress your child out. Have the camp out. GO swimming and visit Aunty Sarah. You will never have this time again. All of us B/C/D fodder from my not-so-amazing comprehensive, we’re pretty much all OK now. We survived. Please, please try to send them the message that although it’s good to try hard, it’s also good to be happy in your own skin. The one that fits you best. The one that might be made of Cs, Bs and the odd D. But does that make you a less valid person? It will probably only make you a happier, healthier person and that, surely, is the ultimate goal of parents and schools.
AND WE WONDER WHY LEVELS OF CHILDHOOD ANXIETY ARE RISING. If you have children who do not fit the tiny funnel of the measurement system of the UK, if you do not have a child who has naturally

THE PHOTO THAT WON Last month Turners Hill resident Henry Nathan, who studies at the University of Leeds, beat more than 800 entries to win the highly prestigious Calumet Student Photographer of the Year 2016 competition. Of his win Henry said he was “shocked beyond words”.
Here he explains: ‘The winning photo was taken on a road trip from LA to Vancouver which I took in June this year. We stopped off in Bend, Oregon, on the way back down to meet up with a photographer I know through Instagram. He took us to this amazing cave which only has
light shine through about a month a year and for only a few hours a day. We set off a smoke bomb to really emphasise the light. I was lucky enough to capture my friend perfectly posed with his dog looking up at the light.’ Congratulations, Henry!
The 20-year-old’s image, which has won him a package of prizes worth over £11,000, was of a man and a dog captured in an underground cave in Oregon, America, with a light shining from above. Having visited countries such as Peru, Ecuador, LA, Fiji and Thailand, his passion for photography has really grown and he has built up quite a following on social media Firstly, locate all the listed words in the grid, either horizontally, platform Instagram. vertically, forwards or backwards. In 2015 a study published in the journal Science estimated that in 2010 between 4.8 and 12.7 million tons of plastic rubbish were dumped in the world’s oceans. World production of plastics has increased some 500% since 1980, and these materials represent between 80% and 90% of maritime pollution. And that’s just the oceans... These statistics are pretty alarming but it’s no surprise when you look around you, you’ll see that as a society we are ‘addicted’ to plastic. Most of this is what we are offered and given by the businesses whose products we buy daily. We all know that the problem is that most plastic just won’t bio-degrade... of course it ends up sitting in landfills. The 5p charge for plastic bags introduced at the end of 2015 may have been controversial but one thing it has done is forced people to start re-using their plastic bags or using material bags.... plastic bags in landfills is down, by

If the kids use straws when they have a drink, then buy metal ones they can re-use.
It is difficult to get away from the stuff but there are small things we can do in our own lives to combat against its omnipresence. Here are a few suggestions: Use water bottles! Instead of buying lots of small bottles of mineral water, if you don’t like tap water (understandably), invest in a decent water filter and then refill your water bottle over and over. You will probably also save yourself a good deal over the years! When you do buy mineral water, try to choose a brand that uses glass bottles.

France recently banned nonbio plastic cutlery, plates and cups! We could take our lead from them and start buying wooden disposable cutlery/ plates/cups for children’s parties, picnics, etc. It may be a fraction dearer and it will likely have to be sourced but it’s worth it and will put pressure on the plastic manufacturers to come up with an alternative. A glance into a January from very many moons ago:
PLASTIC, PLASTIC EVERYWHERE Continued
could always ask the manufacturer to use alternatives and then give the bubble wrap away for free as one of my friends recently did on a Facebook selling site, for re-use.
January, 1795 by Mary Darby Robinson Pavement slipp'ry, people sneezing, Lords in ermine, beggars freezing; Titled gluttons dainties carving, Genius in a garret starving.
Gifts I recently bought from Debenhams were covered in a type of ‘bouncy’ paper that did the job of bubble wrap just as well, but is of course bio-degradable. So it was a thumbs up to them!
Lofty mansions, warm and spacious; Courtiers clinging and voracious; Misers scarce the wretched heeding; Gallant soldiers fighting, bleeding.
One can buy toothbrushes online which are completely bio-degradable; I have yet to hear about electric toothbrush heads that are degradable, but again if the manufacturers see that general degradable toothbrushes are gaining popularity, they will probably take steps to come up with a toothbrush head that is too.
Wives who laugh at passive spouses; Theatres, and meeting-houses; Balls, where simp'ring misses languish; Hospitals, and groans of anguish. Arts and sciences bewailing; Commerce drooping, credit failing; Placemen mocking subjects loyal; Separations, weddings royal. Authors who can't earn a dinner; Many a subtle rogue a winner; Fugitives for shelter seeking; Misers hoarding, tradesmen breaking.
And avoid buying products like shower gel and facial scrubs that have the dreaded plastic beads in them.
Taste and talents quite deserted; All the laws of truth perverted; Arrogance o'er merit soaring; Merit silently deploring.
There are probably many more steps we could take, but even small steps in 2017 to cut down on plastic will be positive. Good luck!
Ladies gambling night and morning; Fools the works of genius scorning; Ancient dames for girls mistaken, Youthful damsels quite forsaken. Some in luxury delighting; More in talking than in fighting; Lovers old, and beaux decrepid; Lordlings empty and insipid. Poets, painters, and musicians; Lawyers, doctors, politicians: Pamphlets, newspapers, and odes, Seeking fame by diff'rent roads. Gallant souls with empty purses; Gen'rals only fit for nurses; School-boys, smit with martial spirit, Taking place of vet'ran merit. Honest men who can't get places, Knaves who shew unblushing faces; Ruin hasten'd, peace retarded; Candour spurn'd, and art rewarded.

Testimonial “It was a real pleasure to have Lewis and Phil constructing our oak-framed garage and Imperial Framing has our highest recommendation. Not only were they extremely hard working, conscientious and diligent but also highly-adept in their traditional skills, concerned to provide value for money and committed to achieving a fabulous result.” Sally and David Lamb
