Flat roof repairs

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

We have two articles about two very different but equally worthy charities, both locally based. One that helps re-home animals and another which helps education in a remote part of Kenya.

Helping wildlife in Crowborough

“Unimproved grassland” is land that has never been used for agriculture, due to urban development, neglect, overgrazing by livestock and the use of herbicides/fertilizers; only 3% of the UK’s unimproved grassland still survives today. Palesgate meadow in Crowborough is one such area of grassland which was purchased by Crowborough Town Council in 2012 as part of a parcel of land adjoining Palesgate Lane. This herb-rich grassland is of a very high nature conservation value as it supports a huge variety of plants which in turn attracts a much wider variety of wildlife than is found in other types of grassland.

important the meadow was for wildlife. Small mammals such as voles, mice and shrews are abundant and provide a foodsource for birds of prey, such as kestrels and owls. The meadow is of particular importance for reptiles. Slow worms, common lizards, grass snakes and adders are all present in the meadow and the adjacent Ghyll woodland. All reptiles are legally protected as their numbers are declining across the UK. Sympathetic management of the grassland is critical in maintaining this remaining 3% of the UK’s meadows. The most

sustainable way of doing this is by conservation grazing which controls the invasive species that encroach the grassland. Crowborough Conservation has been working closely with the Town Council, the High Weald AONB Unit and the Sussex Pony Grazing Conservation Trust to bring Exmoor ponies onto the land to can graze on the meadow for 2 or 3 months of the year. Exmoor ponies are the oldest of the native breeds of British ponies and are thought to be the closest descendant of the ponies that inhabited Britain 100,000 years ago – long before the arrival of

The grassland is not only ecologically important for its wildflowers and grasses but also because it supports a variety of invertebrates such as bumblebees and butterflies which thrive on the pollen and nectar provided by the combination of fine-leaved grasses and wildflowers. Studies undertaken by Crowborough Conservation quickly established just how • July 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

man. They have hardly changed since prehistoric times when they lived alongside mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers. In fact until fairly recently Exmoor ponies were a rare breed themselves. At the end of the second world war there were only 50 registered Exmoor ponies, at the time making them rarer than the Giant Panda! Thankfully the Exmoor’s are adapted to surviving hostile weather. Able to graze out all year round without supplementary feeding, they tackle gorse, brambles and even bracken. Ponies also trample the bracken which helps to suppress its spread across the meadow. Exmoor ponies are wild animals so whilst the public are encouraged to visit the meadow it is important that they are not offered any food. Dogs must be kept under close control. Crowborough Conservation has a number of wildlife events and talks arranged for this year and will shortly be arranging field trips to see reptiles at the meadow. If you wish to join Crowborough Conservation or take part in one of our events please contact us at our website at www. crowboroughconservation.org.

Business Profile: Q&A with East View Riding Centre tracks away from traffic. We are unique in this respect. We are not a Riding School and therefore do not teach, but have very friendly experienced escorts on our treks. What do your clients most like about using the centre?

How did the East View Riding Centre all start initially? We are a family business which was started in 1974 with our two daughters. At first it was just with our private horses and later we added new ones which we trained to do the pony trekking. We originally rode around the headlands of our private fruit farm and 12 acre wood. We later obtained permits to ride on The Ashdown Forest.

Our clients love our well behaved horses and the friendly safe atmosphere of our trekking centre and come from miles around to have a enjoyable ride with us, we have groups of boy scouts, boys brigade, and even blind riders who come back year after year. For more information, please see advert.

Who do you cater for at the Centre? We cater for everyone over 7 years, of all riding abilities and even take people out who have never ridden before putting them on leading rein if necessary. What can you offer to horse riders that they may not be able to find elsewhere? We offer a friendly, family atmosphere on our private farm

Giving Animals a Home The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare was established over 35 years ago when Katherine Wilson (always known as ‘Kit’), a well-known cat show judge and campaigner for animal welfare, left a small legacy to be used for the benefit of animals. A cornerstone of the trust’s founding policy then, as now, was to promote the spaying and neutering of pets. The need for the trust’s work in rescuing and re-homing unwanted dogs and cats would be greatly reduced if there were fewer puppies and kittens being born; animals rescued by the trust are fortunate that they remain with us until homed; very few are put to sleep unless it is for health or temperament reasons – sadly thousands of unwanted pets have to be destroyed every year by other organisations and authorities. From a modest beginning the trust has grown and in 1986 set up its own Animal Rescue Centre in Hadlow Down, near Uckfield, in East Sussex. In addition to the animal rescue and re-homing work the trust has become increasingly involved in wildlife rehabilitation. Over the years, the rescue centre has also become a permanent home to many animals that it is not possible or desirable to re-home; these include horses, donkeys, semi-feral cats, goats, birds and small mammals. Some of our rescued dogs have gone on to become ambassadors for search & rescue, pets as therapy and great fundraisers! We receive lovely letters from families who have taken one of our rescues into their home to be a part of their family, giving them a fresh start in life. Unfortunately rabbits and guinea pigs are often bought ‘on a whim’ with little understanding of their needs and long term care. We currently have a large number, already neutered, for re-homing and we are always happy to give advice. The trustees give their time on a voluntary basis, including the chairman who has overall responsibility for animal welfare, the organisation of the rescue centre, its staff and volunteers. Funds are raised mainly through local supporters’ groups, individual donations, legacies, animal sponsors and our charity shops in Uckfield and Eastbourne, (we hope to open one in Hailsham soon!). We receive no local authority, government or lottery funding 14 • July 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

One of our annual fundraising events is a sponsored dog walk over the Ashdown Forest, held by kind permission of The Conservators. We ran the event in May for many years, but due to the vulnerability of the ground nesting birds, it is now held in September so as not to disturb any wildlife. The walk is well attended and a great day is had by all. Rain or shine, our supporters raise money for us and the canine side of our work. We ensure everyone is informed about good manners during the walk; to ‘pick up’ after their dogs in particular and use our bins along the route. We also advise on responsible dog ownership when it comes to horses and livestock, ensuring dogs are under control at all times. The forest is to be shared and enjoyed by all and we feel it is important to look out for other animals. At the rescue centre we sell deer whistles that attach to the front grill of a car. They are specially designed so that the wind blowing through the whistle emits a high pitched frequency which warns and may deter deer from running out in front of a travelling vehicle. At a cost of £8 (plus £1 postage) we feel this is a small price to pay for the possible prevention of an accident! If you feel that you would like to help the trust in any way, please take a look at our website (www.kitwilsontrust.org.uk), or request a copy of our newsletter to see the latest animals looking for a home. If you have the time and space to consider taking on a 4 legged companion we would love to hear from you. Or, perhaps you could make a monthly donation, sponsor an animal, support our charity shops and fundraising events or run an event of your own. Legacies also help us to plan further into the future. If you would like to help us in any way we look forward to hearing from you. Please telephone 01825 830444. Had enough of SLEEPLESS Nights? Are you suffering from insomnia, habitual snoring or chronic daytime tiredness? If so, read on…. Dr Peter Venn is a Consultant Sleep Physician who set up the Sleep Disorder Centre at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, in 1993, A leading expert in his field, he was the medical adviser on BBC1’s Goodnight Britain, and broadcasts regularly on both radio and television.

High blood pressure and diabetes are frequent associations with sleep apnoea, leading to a higher risk of stroke and heart attack in middle age. Symptoms include snoring, stopping or struggling to breath and excessive tiredness in the daytime. Literally thousands of lives have been transformed by Dr Venn with a device called a CPAP machine, which is used to treat sleep apnoea, and which guarantees to stop snoring completely – see photo. He calls this device “true preventative medicine that gives people their lives back” Like snoring, insomnia is an increasing problem for many people. Sleeping tablets are usually NOT the best treatment, but Dr Venn’s expert advice will help to select an appropriate alternative after a full discussion and assessment in outpatients.

Dr Venn says, ‘Poor sleep is very common, and many people have chronic problems. Snoring and breathing disorders affect about 4% of middle-aged adults. Sleep apnoea is a disabling condition in which sufferers stop breathing whilst asleep with both medical and social consequences.”

Whatever your problem with sleep, Dr Venn will have seen it before. Private consultations are available at the McIndoe Surgical Centre in East Grinstead. Call Catherine Frantz on 07803 421447 or email: sleepdisorder1@gmail.com website: www.1stopsnoring.co.uk

It is run by London Youth which is a network of over 400 diverse community youth organisations. An investment of £1.5m will ensure gold standard outdoor education is offered to another 100,000 young people over the next decade. To this end, a major new appeal is launching to ensure opportunities for adventure and exploration are guaranteed for children and young people in the future; particularly those with disabilities and young people from areas of economic deprivation. The general purpose is to enhance children’s social and emotional capabilities which are needed to become successful adults. The capital appeal was launched on Friday 13th June to coincide with a visit from London Youth patron, H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip, to Hindleap Warren. As well as this being his fifth visit to the centre, the week also marked his 93rd birthday! His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, K.G., K.T., Patron of London Youth said: “Hindleap Warren provides young people with much needed experience, development and out of doors adventure. The aim of the ‘My Hindleap’ appeal is to improve the facilities needed for the out-door education of 100,000 young people over the next ten years.” The Centre Director, Sam Grimstone, had this to say about the special day:

“We had such a fantastic day celebrating Hindleap’s 50th birthday. It was wonderful to share the day with so many of Hindleap Warren and London Youth’s longstanding friends and supporters. Some of them had supported the very first log cabin erected on site, and so many have helped us develop and improve the centre over the last fifty years. “We’ve spent the past year listening to the young people we work with through schools and youth groups, and to our own staff and Trustees, to work out what investment Hindleap needs to deliver outstanding outdoor education for the next ten years. The celebration on Friday was the perfect opportunity to launch our ‘My Hindleap’ development plan and we were delighted and honoured that our patron HRH Prince Philip could join us for the event.” With Head of Centre, Tony Smith, further stating: “Two wonderful birthdays last week, our patron HRH Prince Philips 93rd and our 50th. “It was just amazing to celebrate ours in such good company with supporters, friends, staff, young people from schools and our London Youth projects and of course HRH Prince Philip. “I saw the day as a fantastic celebration of 50 years of adventure and education for 300,000 young people and an incredibly exciting launch of development plans to provide even better opportunities for a

further 100,000 young people over the next ten years and more”. Although over the last 50 years Hindleap Warren has delivered to nearly 300,000 young people, the availability of gold standard outdoor education is under threat, Hindleap’s facilities are under pressure, and young people’s educational needs are changing. But the value and development that learning away from the classroom can offer still remains just as crucial, if not more so today. Daniel Osbourne, Chief Instructor at Hindleap Warren, stated: “I enjoy working with young people. I like being the person who helps someone get over a fear or step outside their comfort zone. I enjoy being part of the change in someone’s life.” Some statistics are that less than 10% of young people now play in natural areas like woodlands and parks, compared with 40% of adults when they were young. Plus: • 76% of young people feel they got on better with others in their class as a result of their residential, according to research from the Learning Away Initiative

this to say:

• 77% of primary age visitors said Hindleap made them better able to cope with challenges

“Hindleap has pushed me outside my comfort zone. I now don’t think of the bad things that could happen if I do something – I think of the accomplishments that I will achieve when going on an adventure.”

• 64% of the young people visiting Hindleap from London Youth member clubs live in the 20% most economically deprived areas in the whole country

Commenting on the need for My Hindleap, Rosie Ferguson, Chief Executive of London Youth, further stated:

• 89% of youth professionals feel Hindleap meets their objectives

“More young people are now visiting Hindleap than ever before, they are staying longer and learning more while they are here. But the need and demand for quality outdoor education continues to increase and evolve while the opportunities are reducing; 1 in 3 outdoor centres in the UK is closing and many schools and youth groups can no longer offer subsidised places for young people from poorer backgrounds.

Ruby, who visited the centre with her Year 6 class had

“Through ‘My Hindleap’ we want to make sure that all young people, regardless of needs, can fully experience everything we have to offer and achieve the same outcomes as anyone else.” To find out more about “My Hindleap” or if you’d like to support the appeal and ensure Hindleap Warren can continue to provide gold standard outdoor education for young people, please get in touch with Gareth Price, Head of Development, at gareth.price@londonyouth.org.uk or call: 01342 828214. 18 • July 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

Greenfields Independent School Greenfields School is an independent, non-denominational, day and boarding school on the edge of the Ashdown Forest that services children from 2 to 18. It has a Montessori based Pre-school & Reception class, followed by Infant, Junior, Senior, 6th Form and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classes. Greenfields teaches national curriculum and runs like any other independent school with the exception that it utilises a unique study method. This method isolates the barriers preventing or hindering a child from learning and then provides precise tools to deal with them. Its use opens the door to any child of any ability learning anything. This, along with small class sizes and plenty of individual attention from enthusiastic teachers, allows ‘gifted’ children to study ahead of their year group where feasible, or slower children to receive extra help when necessary. Greenfields also adheres to a strong moral code with a zero tolerance of bullying, drugs or alcohol. Visitors to the school routinely comment on the high morale, confidence and friendliness of the children. These attributes were also noted by the Independent Schools Inspectorate* when they inspected in 2011. Three inspectors over a period of two weeks looked into every aspect of the school's performance. The study methods were new to them and they looked at them with great interest. The school was rated overall as “Good” and one observer noted: “Pupils of all abilities display good subject knowledge, understanding and skills. They acquire secure literacy and numeracy skills, and develop a capacity to think critically. Many pupils show strong creative skills, in writing, art work and drama. Pupils are very articulate, listen carefully and contribute well when asked. They are motivated, and work independently and with enthusiasm.” Greenfields is proud of what it has achieved in the last 30 years and also of the many children who have gone on to excel in their various careers. In celebration of its 30th Anniversary in 2013 it radically reduced tuition fees in order to make private school education accessible to more people. You are invited to tour the school and get your questions answered!

Correction In last month’s article entitled ‘The Military on Ashdown Forest 1939-1945’. The Canadian Artillery Regiment was erroneously named Canadian Airforce Regiment. From the context the first V1 crash can be inferred to have happened in Pippingford Park, however it happened on Crowborough Golf Course. The Ashdown Forest Living take full responsibiltiy for these errors. Finally Major was mis-spelt Curry with a ‘y’, and it should have been ‘ie’, Major Currie was the first Canadian to receive the VC in the Normandy campaign. We apologise for any confusion caused.

David Shepherd’s Artist Awards

Hammerwood resident David Shepherd CBE is both a wildlife artist and conservationist. His charity the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation puts on the ever-popular Wildlife Artist of the Year Competition which has now become an international event, attracting entrants from around the world. This year’s winner was French sculptor Pascal Chesneau with his “Transparence Elephant” - recycled from an old car roof. It was a particularly special year as the charity celebrated its 30th Year Anniversary. Chesneau accepted the £10,000 top prize from Shepherd at an event in London. Commenting on the winning piece chairman of the judges, Mark Carwardine said: “Who couldn’t love it? It stopped

me in my tracks and I keep going back to see more”. The runner-up was Singaporebased Choon Chew’s “Aiming”, for which the artist won £1000. The drawing was also the winner of the wildlife in action category.

David Shepherd CBE

Overall, there are eight competition categories besides the top award, with each category winners each receiving £500. 150 works were shortlisted from more than 1,000 entrants and were exhibited at London’s Mall Galleries last month. “The extraordinary talent 24 • July 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

and creativity of all the artists involved never ceases to amaze me,” said David who set up the competition in 2007 to raise funds and awareness for endangered animals. “And what is so utterly brilliant is that all these talented artists share my passion – to give something back to the animals that inspire our work.” Since it began, Wildlife Artist of the Year has raised over £100,000 for conservation projects supported by David’s wildlife charity. Some of the winning entrants are shown above.

Put the biscuits in a food bag and crush with a rolling pin until fine (or whizz in a food processor until fine). Tip the biscuit crumbs into a large bowl and stir in the melted butter until combined. Divide the biscuit mixture between 4 x 10cm (4in) fluted tart tins with removable bases or 4 x 10cm (4in) cups lined with nonstick baking paper. Use the back of a spoon to firmly press the mixture into the base and sides of each container. Set aside to chill while you make the filling. In a mixing bowl, whisk the soft cheese, yogurt, sugar, lemon zest and juice until combined and creamy. Divide the filling between the tart tins and smooth the tops. Chill for at least 1 hour. In a pan, melt the jam over a low heat until liquid, then set aside to cool a little. Remove the cheesecakes from their tins or cups and arrange the strawberry quarters on top. Using a pastry brush, coat the fruit with the cooled jam until glossy and serve. “My mother said I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy. Every Child Deserves an Education The Loiyangalani Trust is a small, locally based charity that supports education in a remote part of northern Kenya, thus enabling children to have a better future. Here is a Q&A with one of the trustees, Carolyn Bentley, about the vital work they do:

How did the charity all start? What is the background? It all started when a friend in West Hoathly put out a notice in our parish newsletter asking for volunteer trustees. Anthony had family connections in Kenya and had been to Loiyangalani when travelling on a safari holiday. A boy asked him if he would sponsor his secondary education, which he did, and he later sponsored the boy’s sister to study nursing. But he wanted to do more than a single individual could achieve and so four of us started in the autumn of 2009 with a presentation in our village church, resulting in a few people coming forward to sponsor children.

Since its beginning, what expansion has it seen? It has expanded greatly since then. From our beginnings as a ‘small charity’ we became fully

28 • July 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

registered in 2012 and are now supporting over 30 children through secondary education as well as providing vital equipment for the primary school. So far we have provided desks, books, calculators, dictionaries, bibles, uniforms, sanitary towels so that the girls don’t miss school, and trained 3 teachers. With funds raised recently we have just started providing breakfast for 500 primary school children who would otherwise only have one meal a day.

What is the most enjoyable side to running this charity? Seeing that we are making a big difference to the lives of children who live in a far more difficult environment than we do. They are so keen to study and grateful for the opportunity of an education which will mean they will have a better future than just herding goats or fishing. Albert, one of our first sponsored pupils has finished secondary school and is about to start university. Meantime he has been helping out teaching at the primary school. We have another boy studying electrical engineering (very timely as there is a big wind farm project about to start nearby, which will be operational in the next few years and will provide electricity to Loiyangalani as well as to the national grid). It is humbling to see the appreciation

of an education which we take for granted in the western world. They can be writing with just a couple of inches left on a pencil, crammed five to a desk designed for 3 or sitting on the floor.

What is the most challenging side to the charity? Communication with such a remote place in Kenya isn’t easy. We do most by email as the PO Box for the surface mail is in the county town - a 7 hour drive away across dessert tracks! Emails are mainly picked up by mobile phone as there is a mobile phone mast in the village - albeit only 2G signal.

What does the future hold? What local help are you hoping to have? We hope to continue growing gradually so that we can support more children through secondary education. Primary school education in Kenya is provided free by the government, although there is never enough of anything, whether it be pencils, etc. but for secondary school there are fees that have to be paid. So we are always looking for more people to support us. He gets the job done quietly and efficiently with a really positive attitude. Well I Never!

Things we thought were true but aren’t Julius Caesar invaded Britain proclaming: “Veni, Vidi, Vici” (I came, I saw, I conquered)...

In fact he said this while summing up his victory over King Pharnaces II of Pontus at the battle of Zela in 47 BC. His attempts to invade Britain were much less satisfactory. We gave him a good run for his money, he had to invade twice with no real success, then trade and Roman influence actually grew ‘organically’ without the need for full occupation. The invasion happened 96 years later under Emperor Claudius.

Napoleon was short...

Actually this came from mistranslation followed by propaganda. According to his autopsy of 1821, he was “5/2”. It’s now believed this in fact represents the French measurement “5 pieds 2 pouces”, which converts to 1.69 metres. The average height of Frenchmen between the years of 1800 and 1820 was 1.64 metres, so he’d have been taller than most of his countrymen and even taller than the average Englishman, who was then 1.68 metres!

It’s 50-50 chance whether a coin lands on “heads” or “tails”...

Students at Stanford University recorded thousands of coin tossses with high-speed cameras and discovered the chances are approximately fifyone-forty-nine in favour of heads! If the coins are subjected to exactly the same conditions and same force, their spin will produce an even chance, but the slightest difference in the conditions – speed and angle of spin, height of the coin from the ground, which side is facing up to start – will affect the result.

Cleopatra was Egyptian...

Cleopatra was a direct descendant of Ptolemy I (303-285 BC), he’d been Alexander the Great’s right hand man. On Alexander’s death in 323 BC, Ptolemy was rewarded by being granted the governorship of Egypt. Ptolemy came from Macedon, north of Greece. The Ptolemaic court only spoke Greek and behaved as an occupying foreign power. By contrast, unlike the dynasty she belonged to, Cleopatra did learn to speak Egyptian.

Always Respect your Elders tasty recipes to both use and preserve the flavours and goodness. Nothing quite brings a foraged meal together quite like a glass of Elderflower champagne on a beautiful summers day. But there are countless recipes out there for both cordial and champagne so I will instead give you recipe for the panna cota I made last week which was glorious, heady with aroma. For this recipe you will require: • • • •

The elder tree has a long varied history in both our own culture and worldwide, with countless stories, recipes and remedies being handed down from generation to generation. Some considered it a magical tree, as once it was believed that witches could turn themselves into an Elder. ‘Magic wands’ were made from its branches and they were planted outside houses to ward off evil spirits. It was believed that sitting under or sleeping under an Elder tree would transport one down to the faerie underworld. Risky business that, considering how abundant it is! As an herbalist this is a staple of my medicine chest with the tree providing bark, leaves, flowers and berries up for medicinal use. All of which can be preserved and saved for use in winter when they are mostly required. The flowers always denote for me the true beginning of Summer, while the berries mark the last of the hedgerow harvest and summer’s end. Generally it is its ability to induce a sweat which makes it useful in treating the common cold. The bark and leaves require caution and expertise in their use as they are the most powerful and can induce vomiting. From the beginning of Summer through to the end of Autumn, elder is always in my foraging basket. The flowers and berries being so versatile that I am never short of recipes that delight the senses. From pancakes, panna cota, and champagne with the flowers through to jams, vinegars and wines with the berries I am constantly trying to find new unique and 32 • July 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

5-8 Elderflower Heads (Umbels) 900ml Double Cream 1 tablespoon Agar Agar 2 tablespoons Caster Sugar

Add the flowers to the cream, removing as much green stems as possible. They can impart too much bitterness to the dish. Slowly bring the cream and flowers to a very gentle simmer and then remove from the heat and allow to sit for at least half and hour. Then remove the flowers from the cream using a fine sieve. Remember to press the flowers in the sieve to remove as much flavour and cream back into the pan. Once again bring the cream up to a gentle simmer and add the Agar Agar and stir carefully until it is all dissolved. Remove from heat and pour into individual ramekins and place in the fridge to set. Dust lightly with icing sugar when serving. Try it with a fruity compote, I made mine with a delicious blackberry whiskey jelly. NB: Remember to always consult an expert when foraging and self medicating. Always ID plants 100% before consuming and seek a professional’s advice if necessary. Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide, diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you July think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Gardening in July By Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery

Your garden is now at its flowering peak and you can give yourself a pat on the back for all your hard work. However, if you don’t feel this fits the description of your garden then don’t be too despondent, look at where the gaps are and think about colour and the size and structure of the plant that will make the difference – maybe not for this year but next year. As always, there are plenty of jobs you can be doing in the garden.

Roses The roses have been wonderful this year, keep deadheading (except for species grown for their hips) and give them a feed, any food with high potash and magnesium will do the trick. Best to use a liquid feed so as not to scorch the leaves.

Perennials Cut back the dead flower spikes of delphiniums and lupins and give them a feed to encourage a second flowering. If plants have powdery mildew (not uncommon in hot, dry weather) then the best thing is to either spray them with a fungicidal spray or if they have flowered and you can cut them back, then do so. If you want more summer and autumn interest then plant out Agapanthus, Anemone and Crocosmia, they’ll give good colour and fill some gaps.

Pots and Baskets Water, water, water and feed… and they will reward you with good displays of colour through to September. Keep deadheading to prolong flowering.

34 • July 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

If you’re going on holiday then ask a friendly neighbour if they can help out with watering, if not then move the pots into a shady corner to help them conserve moisture.

Lawns Avoid watering your lawn (unless it’s newly laid turf ) and raise the blades on the mower. If a lawn isn’t watered then it won’t grow, so you won’t have to mow it! As soon as it rains it will green up pretty quickly and you won’t have a massive water bill.

Shrubs and Hedges Now is a good time to prune Philadelphus and Wisteria. With the former you can prune back by about a third, take each shoot back to a nonflowering sideshoot. With Wisteria cut back the wispy shoots to about 15cm long. Train it into your fence or trellis to keep it under control. Now is a good time to clip Ligustrum (Privet) and Lonicera nitida.

Fruit and vegetables Raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants and gooseberries should be ready for picking now. Pinch out the tops of the tomato plants to stop them growing and divert the nutrients to the fruit. Harvest your fruit and vegetables as they are ready and enjoy the feast. When you buy new plants place them (still in the pot) where you think they’ll look good in the garden and then sit and have a cup of tea and decide if you like how they fit in – if they don’t then move things around. Saves so much time and effort! Happy gardening…
