Flat roofing

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

This month we have a fantastic article about the history of the beautiful Gravetye Manor, nestled to the north of the forest. The gardens are particularly of interest as they were the stage of the work of world renowned Victorian gardener William Robinson. The Annual Ashurst Raft Race returns again this year, find out more about this hugely fun event, see page 6. With Spring in full swing and the sun shining (fingers crossed) we hope all your home and garden improvements are going to plan. We can help you with our many local businesses offering their services.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. LOCAL SUCCESS AT RDA’S REGIONAL CHALLENGE DAY Two young riders from Newchapel’s East Park Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Group have qualified for a National Competition having enjoyed success at the RDA’s South East Regional Challenge Day recently. They were competing against nearly 50 other riders from RDA groups across Surrey, Kent and East & West Sussex who converged on East Grinstead’s Felbridge Show Ground to participate in the Countryside Challenge, which was a qualifying event for the RDA National Championships in Hartpury, Gloucestershire in July. Emily Hansome qualified in the junior class and Adam Lester qualified in the Senior class.

Another local company and success story, Forelock Books, which specialises in pony story collectables for young pony mad readers, donated prizes this year for the junior classes. David Cowan also awarded the prizes and said “It’s always such a treat and an honour to participate in these inspiring events and meet such enthusiastic young people. The weather held for us and there were smiles all round”. There are a number of RDA Groups locally: Eridge RDA Group Contact Jane Lom on 0845 241 4387

The Countryside Challenge follows a simulated course where the riders put their skills to the test by tackling obstacles and tasks they might find in the country. These include going through a gate, crossing a ‘road’, entering a farmyard, picking an apple from a tree and collecting eggs from a chicken! Although great fun, this also tests their steering, balance and confidence.

Ashdown RDA Group Contact Claire Dagwell on 0845 241 9364 East Park RDA Group Contact James Baxter on 0845 241 4307 Herons Ghyll RDA Driving Group Contact Vanessa Wright on 0845 241 5347

For the first time, there was also a class for show jumping that proved to be a popular and successful introduction to the discipline which was also won by an East Park rider, Leroy Vincent. Most of the riders had come to go head-to-head in the Countryside Challenge, but there was also Handy Pony, a number of gymkhana games and the fabulous fancy dress competition which rounded off the day with a ‘Heroes and Villains’ theme. This was judged by David Cowan, Chairman of East Grinstead’s Cowan Architects who have been sponsoring the South East Region of the RDA for the last 10 years. David selected Samber RDA, from near Woking, Surrey as the ultimate winners with their selection of Peter Pan favourites.

ox-eye daisy

can make them seem to glow in the evening and as such gave rise to its other name of moon daisy. In Celtic folklore it was believed that the daisies were the reincarnation of children who had died during childbirth and appeared so as to give comfort to the grieving mothers. Much later in history the Christians adopted the flower as a symbol of St Mary Magdalene, whose name was changed with time to maudlin, and the flower became known as maudlinwort. In Austria and Germany it was hung inside the house as it was believed it would repel lightening.

Ox-eye daisies have been used in herbal medicine since before the middle ages to treat a variety of conditions from Jaundice and Smallpox to insanity. Nowadays we know that it is similar in use to its relative Chamomile. The whole plant is used in a herbal remedy and it’s known to be antispasmodic, antitussive (preventing or relieving a cough), tonic and diuretic. It can also act as an vulnerary (healing of wounds), diaphoretic (inducing perspiration) and emmenagogue (stimulating or increasing menstrual flow) herb. It is also used in respiratory conditions like chronic cough.

At this time of the year, the media, in its many forms, are awash with recipes for the ever popular Elderflower. An incredibly perfumed and versatile blossom it is no surprise that it is one of the most popular and well known native flowers to be foraged and utilised for all manner of foods, drinks and medicine. But this article is not about Elderflower. No no, I would like to take this opportunity to bring your attention to an as common flower, but probably less known edible, the Ox-eye daisy, Leucanthemum vulgare.

It is best harvested in May and June then dried to be used later. The plant has been successfully in the treatment of whooping cough, asthma and nervous excitability. A lotion can be made to be used on bruises, wounds, ulcers and some cutaneous (relating to or affecting the skin) diseases. A decoction or tea of the dried flowers and stems can be used as a wash to treat chapped hands and distilled water made from the flowers is an effective eye lotion in the treatment of conjunctivitis.

“The nodding oxeye bends before the wind...” - John Clare, “The Fear of Flowers” The Ox-eye daisy is a member of the Asteraceae family, whose most famous family member is the dandelion, ‘Taraxacum officianalis’. Like all species of this family the common identification character is the flower head. The yellow disc in the centre is actually what is known as a compound flower head. And is made up of a cluster of much smaller flowers giving the appearance of a single flower. The first flowers start to appear between May and June and will continue through to September. Its botanical name, Leucanthemum vulgare, is from the ancient Greek words leucos meaning white, anthos, meaning flower and vulgare meaning common. Hence it translates as the common white flower, which it certainly is. It is found in abundance on verges, hedgerows and in meadows and is probably the archetype of the British wild flower. The sheer abundance and brightness of the flowers

Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide and diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.

The whole plant is edible and the leaves make a great addition to summer salads, having a unique flavour that is similar to celery. The flower heads too make a wonderful addition to both savoury or sweet dishes. The unopened flower buds can be pickled and used like large capers adding a unique wild flavour to any dish.

The Eastern Clumps

With Thanks to the Ashdown Forest Centre and Conservators for allowing us to reproduce their walk leaflet (edited version below). There are other walk leaflets available at the Forest Centre. Two walks through open heathland that start at one of Ashdown Forest’s iconic hill-top clumps of pine trees. The area has evidence of diverse human uses over 2,000 years from pre-Roman occupation to the Cold War.

Long walk - 2.2 miles/3.5km Short walk - 1.4 miles/2.2km Walk away from the car park and to the left of Kings Standing Clump. Behind the clump, turn right and then left j to join a ride. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Although there is evidence of Iron Age and Roman occupation of the site, Kings Standing takes its name from the practice, from Tudor times onwards (i.e. 16th century), of hunting deer from standings. Rather than pursuing deer, hunters stood on elevated structures past which the deer were driven from nearby enclosures and shot at from close quarters. In about 1825, the clump (like others, e.g. at Crows Nest) was planted with Scots pines by the De La Warr family who owned the forest – a move that so angered

After 700m, the ride reaches a second historic clump of pines, Crows Nest Clump. Pass to the right of the Clump and, on reaching a ride junctionm , turn right to follow the fence-line. The 32ha/80 acres enclosed by the fence have a fascinating history. The area was requisitioned during World War Two and by late 1942 the world’s most powerful radio transmitter, American-built, and named Aspidistra after a song by Gracie Field, had been installed to beam messages to Occupied Europe. By 1943, 34 masts dominated the forest sky-line. After the war the radio station passed from the Political Warfare Executive to the Diplomatic Wireless Service.

is reachedk. For a short, fairly level walk turn sharp right and turn right again after 700m to return to Kings Standing; for a longer walk, turn half right and descend on a steep wide ride.

In the 1980s, the remaining masts were removed and, in circumstances of great secrecy, a bunker was installed as an emergency regional seat of government with the capacity to support life for six months in case of nuclear attack. Barely had the new facilities been completed than they became redundant as East-West relations thawed. The site was closed by the Home Office in 1992 and in 1994 it was bought by Sussex Police as a training area.

During World War One much of this area was used as an anti-gas attack training school. Aerial photographs from the 1920s also show trench systems nearby and, a century after Cobbett, a continuing paucity of trees. Only since World War Two have trees, and woodland, become abundant, expanding from 5% to 40% of the forest area, largely at the expense of heathland. Most conservation work by the Conservators is devoted now to preventing further loss and to improving what remains. The mechanical control of trees, scrub and bracken can be effective short-term management options but they are expensive, inherently unsustainable, and in the end cannot emulate the benefits of livestock for heathland. In 2007 the Conservators established a flock of Hebridean sheep to help rectify this.

When the fence-line bears left, continue straight along the ride and in 800m return to Kings Standing car park. This final stretch of the walk is parallel to the Lewes to London Roman road on the other side of the B2026. Part of the Roman road is visible by the car park of that name. Cartography, photography and graphic by Mapping Ideas Ltd. www.mappingideas.co.uk

The ride crosses two streamsl. Some 50m after the second stream turn right onto a ride and ascend through open heathland. The main heather here, cross-leaved heath, shows how wet the ground can be. Other indicators of such a condition are the yellow-flowering bog asphodel and the bog cotton, whose white fluffy ‘heads’ appear towards the end of summer. Pools formed by the stream are home to the small red damselfly, a rare species in Sussex but one that, benefitting from climate change, is gradually expanding northwards in Britain.

With Courage and Determination...

Forest Row resident, Michaelina Argy, was recognised on the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, receiving an MBE for her services to Thalidomide survivors. She was chairman of the Thalidomide Trust’s National Advisory Council where she spear-headed a campaign for government recognition and help for survivors. We are lucky to be able to bring you a Q&A with her: Did the MBE come as a shock to you? Yes, an astonishing and delightful surprise. What was your response? At first I could not quite believe what I was reading because I thought the letter was some sort of promotion for voting for a party, as it arrived during the general election. It took my older daughter reading it about 10 times to me whilst I was driving, to really begin to sink in what the letter was actually saying. How many years have you been campaigning for Thalidomide victims and what has the highlight been along the way?

I have been campaigning for 7 years, firstly bringing the government to understand its role in the thalidomide tragedy, and then for the government to contribute financially to the Thalidomide Trust on an annual basis. This was agreed in 2010 and the government issued a Statement of Regret - that is the closest any government can get to actually saying sorry. And that was the highlight. In 2012 we then campaigned again as we had a new government, and this time the grant was renewed for a further 10 years. I have met many politicians and had many laughs in Westminster over the years. What happened after you found out? The announcement of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2015 was embargoed until 10.30pm on the 12th June and so I had a party in my garden having invited people telling them I had something to celebrate but that I couldn’t tell them what it was until that very evening. That made the party even more exciting with many strange guesses. I will be invited to an investiture within 7 months to receive my award at St James Palace from the Queen. What do you now hope to accomplish in the future? We are campaigning now to bring the German government

16

to the table. The original manufacturers of the thalidomide drug was a German company (Grunenthal - still in existence) and their criminal trial was terminated prematurely by the German government. This caused evidence to be suppressed which prevented us here in the UK getting a a proper settlement in the 1970’s. The archives are now open and we have found the evidence needed to prove this. We now have the whole of the European parliament behind us and we are gathering the support of the whole of the UK parliament as well. The German government has now agreed to meet us this month! Our aim is to get financial assistance from the German government to meet our unmet health needs without us having to be beggars, and without costing the British taxpayer; to be paid directly to the Thalidomide Trust. My goal is that no thalidomider anywhere in the world is left having any of their health needs not met financially. For more information about the ongoing fight for justice see the website: www.fiftyyearfight.org. We at the Ashdown Forest Living would personally like to congratulate Michaelina on her award and wish her all the very best for the future campaigning. The Humble Bumble

Summer would not be summer without the faint buzz of the endearing bumblebee with their furry, colourful bodies. Their tireless work in our gardens, aiding many of nature’s delights, never ceases to raise a smile.

Here are a few of the more common bumblebees that you may wish to identify in your meaderings this summer. For most species, worker females have the same colour patterns as the queens, but are smaller. Males sometimes look similar to the queens and worker females, but usually have more yellow hair, especially on the head and thorax.

Without their pollination services many flowers would produce no seeds, and fruit and vegetable yields would suffer.

Buff-tailed bumblebee Bombus terrestris Queens, workers and males have a dirty/golden yellow collar near the head and one on the abdomen. The queen’s tail is an off white/buff colour which can sometimes appear orange. The workers have a white tail with a subtle buff line separating the tail from the rest of the abdomen. Unlike many species, the Buff-tailed male’s facial hair is black, as opposed to yellow. Males have a buff-tinged tail.

White- tailed bumblebee Bombus lucorum Queens, workers and males have a yellow band on the thorax and on the abdomen. On a fresh specimen, the tail is a bright white and the yellow bands are a bright lemon-yellow colour. The males have yellow hair on their head, and extra tufts of yellow hair on the thorax and abdomen.

Garden bumblebee Bombus hortorum The same pattern is shared by queen, worker and male: three yellow bands (at the front and rear of the thorax and a third band at the front of the abdomen). The tail is a clean white colour. The face is distinctly long, differentiating it from other species with similar banding, such as the Heath bumblebee. It is a very long tongued species that prefers flowers with deep tubes.

Early bumblebee Bombus pratorum Queens, workers and males have a yellow band on the thorax and abdomen. The abdominal yellow banding is less pronounced or missing in workers. The tail is often dark orange-red, and may fade with time. Because the colour on the tail is restricted to the final segment, it can be difficult to see while the bee is moving. Early bumblebees are a particularly small species and the workers are markedly smaller than other foraging worker species appearing in the springtime. Males have a broad yellow collar that wraps around the thorax, and yellow hair on the face.

Common carder bee Bombus pascuorum Queens, workers and males are almost completely brown or ginger. However, the shade varies significantly, depending on the location. Some have abdomens which are very dark, while the abdomens of others can be quite light. It is the only common UK bumblebee that is mostly brown or ginger.

Red-tailed bumblebee Bombus lapidarius Queens and workers have a distinctive black body with an orange-red tail. Males have distinct yellow facial hairs and a yellow band on the thorax with a black abdomen and a bright orange-red tail. The hairs on the pollen baskets (on the hind legs) of the female are all black, but these may be red in males. It is very similar to the much rarer Red-shanked carder bee but the hairs on the pollen baskets of females of the latter species are red.

Tree bumblebee Bombus hypnorum Queens, workers and males all have a black head, brown-ginger thorax, black abdomen with a white tail. The proportion of white on the tail does vary significantly but is always present. This species was first found in the UK in 2001, but is now found throughout most of England and Wales. It prefers to nest above ground, often inhabiting bird boxes

Heath bumblebee Bombus jonellus Queens, workers and males have three yellow bands, with one at the front of the abdomen and two on the thorax. The mainland variation also has a white tail whereas the Western Isles and Shetland form has an orange/buff tail. The colouration is similar to that of the Garden bumblebee, but the face in this species is round, whereas that of the Garden bumblebee is long. This bee is also smaller than the Garden bee, but this is generally only noticeable in queens. The common name of this species is misleading, because it can be found in gardens, parks and other

habitats. We all know that Bumblebees are having a hard time and so deserve our attention and care. Planting wildflowers where possible and other such actions all help support this special gift

World Poohsticks Championships Yet again it has been proven that the Winnie-the-Pooh legacy, born here in Ashdown Forest, is firmly in the fabric of our British culture with the establishment of the World Poohsticks Championships which is now held yearly in Oxfordshire. We made contact with the organisers to find out more about this exciting and ever-expanding event: History Following the closure of the short-lived Oxford University Poohsticks Society, Poohsticks was brought to a larger audience by the World Poohsticks Championships which, up until last year took place annually at Day’s Lock on the River Thames near Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. It has attracted over 1,500 visitors to the event, including many international visitors. Due to burgeoning numbers of visitors, this year’s championships held last month were moved to one of the cycle track bridges over the river Windrush in Langel Common, Witney. The championships features an individual event and a six-person team event. Players come from a wide variety of countries. The sporting event was started in 1984 by the lockkeeper, Lynn David, as a fund-raising event for the RNLI. He noticed that people occasionally snapped sticks from nearby hedges to play the sport and he then came up with the idea of a competition to aid the charity. He put out a box of sticks and a collection box and it soon became an annual event. In this

Little Wittenham Bridge with the lock keeper’s house beyond version of the game, a finish line is set up farther downstream and the winner is the first to pass this point. After Lynn David’s retirement, the running of the event was initially taken over by the Rotary Club of Sinodun, and has now been taken on by the Rotary Club of Oxford Spires. The Present The event is both popular locally and demonstrates the quirky English nature to a worldwide audience; it has even won the Countryfile Magazine readers ‘Britain’s Favourite Quirky Event’ in 2012. Asking the Publicity Officer Lesley Adams of the Oxford Spires Rotary Club what the toughest aspect of putting on this event is, he said, ‘Obtaining sponsorship to

22

cover the costs of holding a large public event as well as bringing all the elements together from months of planning for just a few hours on one day. Making lots of lists helps!’. The organisers have added other village fete games alongside the championships such as splat the rat, welly throwing, tombola and human fruit machine to help raise more funds for charity. Further, explaining how the UK and the ‘world of Pooh’ has received this championship, Lesley stated, ‘We’ve had some great publicity over the years and this year in particular with our search for a new venue to hold the event. We’ve had many mentions on Radio 2, especially by Clare Balding when on Sunday 18 January (Winnie the Pooh Day) she got listeners to send in their favourite Winnie the Pooh quotes

as well as mention the Championships and our Rotary Club. We have also had huge support from Oxfordshire and national media and even had video news coverage of the event as far away as Dubai and China and questions about it on Mastermind and Celebrity Fifteen To One!’ It is obviously great fun for all to put on such a well-loved and quirky event, it is also important to remember that it raises much needed funds for various local, national and international charities. And the highlight in Lesley’s view? ‘Seeing people of all ages enjoy the fun of the race and seeing how competitive people get over a good old fashioned game of Pooh Sticks’ Perhaps a Pooh Sticks championships on the one and only original Pooh bridge here in Pooh Country is an idea worth considering..... In any case it is certainly wonderful to know that this Pooh Country legacy is helping charity in its own special way.

Making for Majesty What recent changes have happened at Broadwater Warren?

Here the latest news about Broadwater Warren with our Q&A With Chloe Ryder, Assistant Warden, who helps to manage the RSPB reserve, near to Groombridge.

Last winter, mature Scot’s pine, European larch and Norwegian spruce were harvested, opening up wonderful views of the far Wealden landscape. Wet weather caused a few problems; instead of being chipped for biofuel as in previous years, much of the leftover leafy ‘brash’ was used to stop the machines sinking! This was then mulched and scraped to reveal the long buried heather seeds which will burst into life this summer. Conifers planted on areas of ancient semi-natural woodland have been thinned out too, allowing more light to reach the woodland floor to encourage native tree species like rowan, hazel and oak to grow.

Restoring Broadwater Warren For the last two years I have worked as Assistant Warden for the Wealden Team, managing four RSPB Nature Reserves across the High Weald landscape. The reserve where I’ve spent most of my time and witnessed magnificent transformations taking place is Broadwater Warren.

How has the work affected the wildlife in the area? Heather bushes stand over half a metre in some places and the woodland/heathland margins are softening as scrub, bramble and gorse develop. The heathland wildlife has responded brilliantly, even colonising areas within a year of clearing. This year we’ve had record numbers of tree pipits and yellowhammers; at least half a dozen woodlark families, a couple of pairs of skylarks and 7 nightjar territories. Sightings of stonechats hint that they have returned to stay, and we had our first records of whinchat and wheatear. Reptiles are also doing well, with plenty of records of slow worms, common

Up until the 2000s, the site had been planted with a softwood timber crop and had undergone decades of seeding, thinning and cutting on rotation. The RSPB recognised the ecological value beneath the conifer crop and purchased the land when it came up for sale in 2007, with the vision of transforming the area back to the historical open habitat and majestic woodland of the 1800s. In 2009, after a two-year consultation and planning period, the ambitious 10-year heathland and woodland restoration project of Broadwater Warren began...

Testimonial “Lewis and his team at Imperial Framing constructed and fitted a traditional oak porch to our house. Enormous care was taken, not only in the construction itself but also in the design such that it was in keeping with the 400 year old building. We are very happy with the result and can recommend Imperial Framing to anybody who wants attention to detail, quality craftsmanship and a good, honest local company that works with you throughout your project.” Andrew Beveridge, Chelwood Gate April 2015

lizards and grass snakes, plus some recent sightings of our adder populations being infiltrated by ‘black adders’. Dragonflies are colonising the new ponds as well as faring well at the Decoy Pond, where a visitor recently sighted some rare brilliant emerald dragonflies. In the recently-cleared areas butterflies like brimstones, red admirals and peacocks have been seen where there were previously none, and the sighting of a dingy skipper was a first for the reserve! The woodland fauna has also responded well to our work: a rare lesser spotted woodpecker nest containing three male chicks was recently filmed by BTO, confirming they are breeding here.

Several spotted flycatcher territories have been recorded and marsh tits have bred once more in our dormouse nestboxes. We’ve just started our dormouse surveys for the year, and we’re hoping to build on last year’s record numbers which hit a peak of 41 animals! What does the immediate and long term future hold for Broadwater Warren? This upcoming winter will be the final year of heathland restoration marking the end of the major habitat changes and bringing the total area of heathland at Broadwater to around 80ha – just under half of the reserve. From there, it will be a case of managing and maintaining the heathland and woodland to benefit our most threatened species. You’ll see us clearing scrub from the heath, widening woodland rides and coppicing in areas on a rotation to maintain a diverse and sustainable ecosystem. The end result will be a dynamic landscape; a blended mosaic of open heath, soft scrub and mixed woodland in which nature can thrive. What has the reaction been locally? Since I began, there has been a marked change in the visitor type and attitude to Broadwater. It was always going to be difficult with such big changes taking place! Fortunately, many doubters have been convinced by the transformation with many attending our walks and talks, and with the help of our supportive neighbours and parishioners, and the fantastic work of our volunteers, Broadwater finally feels like a nature reserve for everyone to enjoy.
