“Mr Nash carried out a series of works projects that included roof tile and guttering replacement; application of hanging tiles to the rear of the property and groundworks/erection of a shed and patio area in the rear garden. “The works were finished to schedule, for reasonable fees and to a good standard. I was very pleased with the results. Throughout the contract, Mr. Nash and his colleagues behaved with care and consideration for both myself and my neighbours and were extremely professional in their conduct. “As a shareholder and director of a business for 10 years that was highly customer focused, I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Nash for future projects. I found him to be organised, methodical and communicative about the progress of works with both the client and his staff and he managed the projects in a most professional manner, to budget and to time.” — Dr. C Scott

Nutley Windmill: Stamping its Mark into English History
A brand new set of first class stamps were issued at the end of last month depicting Mills of the United Kingdom. Fantastic news for this area is from all the other wonderful windmills across the country, Nutley Windmill has been chosen to represent England and can now be seen on a first class stamp.
is maintained by the Uckfield & District Preservation Society.
“Some of the UK’s surviving windmills and watermills are over 400 years old and many are still in working order. We have selected three of each from around the UK as a tribute to these elegant and charming structures. Issued on 20 June 2017” – quote from Royal Mail
Nutley windmill, a grade II* listed building, constructed in the 16th century has been completely renovated by a dedicated team of volunteers. It is in fact, the oldest working mill in Sussex.
Brian Pike, chairman of the society, said “This stamp is a fabulous achievement and is very rewarding for the volunteers who have given their time to keep the mill open to the public year in and year out”.
Stamps and accompanying postcards can be obtained from Nutley Windmill, Bridge Cottage Uckfield, the UDPS charity shop in Uckfield or your local post office.
Nutley Windmill, which is a fantastic tourist attraction, can be seen from the A22, on the long Ashdown Forest stretch and

along. The difference? He treated them like humans and they reciprocated his clear intention. All these years since he gave those RAF men their lives back physically, mentally and spiritually, the extraordinary man himself will be honoured on the big screen, with Richard E Grant lined up to play him.
One of Forest Row’s most famous residents, Sir Archibald McIndoe will soon deservedly have his life immortalised in a film named The Guinea Pig Club. The film is described as “the true story of maverick surgeon Archie McIndoe, who, at the height of World War II, defied the British establishment with his radical methods aimed at healing severely burned bodies — and more importantly the tortured souls — of Britain’s heroic Royal Air Force pilots. “In so doing, he risked his career, reputation and marriage.” As most of us know, McIndoe was best known for saving the lives of the 649 Second World War “guinea pigs”,
His indelible contribution to medical history, to the unique overcoming of the new and difficult challenges he faced, will be represented by this project, due to begin filming in February.
as they were named, with his pioneering, trailblazing plastic surgery methods. His story is already well documented for progeny both locally and elsewhere and his legacy continues to ascend well into the 21st century with a stage play a couple of years ago, a memorial statue in front of East Grinstead’s Sackville College and now this high profile film.
There have been various attempts over the years to make films of his life which have never left the launching pad. This time however there is a script, director and actors lined up, so it’s assured.
The ‘rebel’ McIndoe instigated drinking and sing-songs on the wards of the Queen Vic - jolly men would of course heal faster. They were also to wear their military uniform to restore pride, and pretty nurses were employed to encourage them! Local people were famously told to ‘never stare’, helping the societal reintegration process

Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), will play the part of Richard Hillary, a dashing pilot who was shot down and rescued from the North Sea having received extensive burns. He wrote a book of his experiences and recovery after which he was returned to duty but was tragically killed in 1943. Years later recognition of his book and his experiences continues to grow making him arguably the most famous of the guinea pigs. Enquiries: 01342 300152

Returning to the wild In recent months we've seen programmes such as 'The Doctor who gave up drugs', air on our screens, showing well-being therapies such as outdoor swimming given as an option. It is no wonder then that there has been a rise in popularity for outdoor swimming. Aldo Frisgualt, who runs outdoor swimming pop-up meets at Weirwood Reservoir gives us an insight: "Having watched and looked after 100's of open water swimmers, I have witnessed a multitude of physical, and more surprisingly, mental manifestations. Often people come to the lake to practice for that big triathlon race. They may well have never tried it before and only swum in a pool, but one thing is for sure, they all fall in love, something happens in the wild water that turns the driven athlete into a chilled out, relaxed person. Is it the cold water? maybe the exposure? maybe the wild experience? maybe the rhythmic meditation that happens when you swim long distance? maybe all of this combined? One thing is for sure, when they leave the water, their shoulders are loser, their smiles are wider and most strikingly, they talk, you'll find strangers sitting together on the jetty and really getting to know eachother. I have no doubt that this is part of the therapy that open water swimming gives you. I've never known an ice breaker like this, a sense of achievement
that brings us together and allows our selfesteem and confidence to rise. In todays society, where everything is driven towards comfort and risk avoidance, this experience allows us that little bit of adventure that reminds us that we are human. When people start they are often incredibly anxious, and ritualistically delay their entrance to the water. The first obstacle is the cold water so when they eventually enter, they screech! their blood circulation, heart rate, and breathing all increase. They then laugh as adrenaline is released and they get moving. As they swim, the exercise hormones are of course released. This type of independent freedom and close contact with nature is hard to explain, and hard to come by. Some people swim long distances, and achieve an almost meditative state, others swim out to the middle and just float on their backs, chill, and look up at the sky. they all eventually come out a revived with the therapy of nature." CROWBOROUGH & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB
July 2017 News Update
eighty invited members of the community were hosted by the Lions and our invited guest the Deputy Mayor Cllr. Martyn Garrett.
Summer has arrived and the Crowborough Lions have swung into action at this year’s local fairs and fêtes. First up was the Crowborough Fun Day featuring an Italian Market where we successfully extended our bookstall hours to fully cover the day. Later this month we will be at our first ever outing to Wadhurst Fair which features our famous Sussex popcorn and candy floss. At the Crowborough Town Fair on 8th July we also include the bookstall and finally the August bank holiday Monday and the Hospital Fête, where we feature our cut-the-cards tins stall and tombola bottles stall, all proceeds going to
the Friends of Crowborough Hospital which last year exceeded £800. The first of our two annual signature events took place last month, namely our summer tea party and musical entertainment for the town’s senior citizens. The United Church in Croft Road was the venue where
Starting this month is this year’s Lions Darts Marathon in which sponsored teams across the district will compete against each other. A team is comprised of six players each of whom has fifty throws of three darts to see which team can achieve the highest aggregate score. All players are sponsored and half their total sponsorship may be nominated by the team to a charity of their choice, the remaining half being donated to the Lions in support of local good causes. Above all it’s about having a fun event from which many charities will benefit.

This Kitchen company, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you might think. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. CROWBOROUGH & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB CONTINUED
Finally, although Lions are reknowned for supporting local good causes we also support national research projects such as the Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA). The appeal has been running since 1976 and during that time we have significantly helped Kings College Hospital in London with equipment, laboratories and wards specifically for the Haematology Department to treat, research and develop new treatments for Blood Diseases. The latest appeal has now been fulfilled and we are delighted to advise that the new LIBRA funded Ambulatory Transplant Unit (shown below) is now up and running on the Davidson Ward at King’s.

Lemon & Raspberry Trifles A fast Summer after dinner treat that takes minutes to make. Serves: 4 adults • Preparation time: 15 mins • Cooking time: 0 mins
METHOD 1. Beat the soft cheese with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy, then stir in the yoghurt. Add 1 tbsp of caster sugar with the lemon zest and juice, mixing well. 2. Put half the raspberries to one side, then puree the rest with a blender or simply mash them with a fork or potato masher. Stir them into the whole raspberries and add the rest of the caster sugar.
INGREDIENTS • • • • •
250g soft cheese 125g vanilla yoghurt 30g caster sugar ½ lemon zest finely grated & 1tbsp juice 250g frozen raspberries defrosted, fresh would also work well • 8 sponge fingers broken into pieces
3. Divide the sponge fingers between 4 serving glasses or ramekin dishes and spoon half the raspberry mixture on top. Now spoon the lemon mixture into the dishes and finish off with the rest of the raspberry mixture. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve. Tip 1: If you make this recipe without the sponge fingers, it’s suitable for anyone with a wheat allergy too. Tip 2: Try serving the raspberry mixture spooned over fresh fruit, low-fat natural yoghurt, ice cream or hot porridge - it tastes superb!
This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life ‘Supermeals for under a fiver’ cookbook

The Sackville Name By all accounts he seems to have been of a multi-talented persona, with fingers in 'many pies'. In 1561, with Thomas Norton, he penned the first English play 'The Tragedy of Gorboduc', to be written in blank verse. This type of poetry doesn't rhyme but has a regular metre - since then it has become the most common form of poetry in the English language. The play deals with the consequences of political rivalry, of the consequences of dividing a kingdom... it was perhaps rather daringly shown to Queen Elizabeth who, at that time, still had a somewhat shaky hold of her crown. He also contributed to the 1563 edition of The Mirror for Magistrates, with the poem Complaint of Henry, Duke of Buckingham. Sackville's first important literary work was the poem Induction, which describes the poet's journey to the infernal regions, where he encounters figures representing forms of suffering and terror. The poem is noted for its sombre stateliness of tone.
Thomas Sackville (1536 - 1608) The Sackville name winds its way prominently through the history books of this area as well the greater parts of Sussex and Kent. Perhaps the most important figure in the names ascendency is Thomas Sackville (1536 1608), MP for East Grinstead, who became a prominent figure in the Court of Elizabeth I. His father Richard Sackville's seat of power crossed over territories in
both Sussex and Kent, including nearby Penshurst and Buckhurst. Richard was also Ann Boleyn's (the Queen's mother) first cousin, a fact which was not lost on the new Queen. Thomas was educated at both Cambridge and Oxford and first entered the House of Commons as a young man in 1558, and in 1559 he was elected MP for East Grinstead.
28
As a definite 'nod' from the Queen, in 1567 he was created Baron Buckhurst, the Buckhurst estate is of course just down the road, near Withyham. But his first very important stately mission came in 1571, when he was sent to bear Queen Elizabeth's congratulations to Charles IX of France on his marriage to Elizabeth of Austria, and most Continues over the page. THE SACKVILLE NAME CONTINUED importantly to negotiate the matter of an alliance between Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Anjou, brother of the French king. In 1586 he was chosen for the sorry but important task of telling Mary, Queen of Scots of her death sentence. In 1587 he went as ambassador to the United Provinces (the Netherlands), upon their complaint against the Queens favourite John Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Even though history recalls he performed his duties with trust and integrity, Dudley had sufficient influence over the Queen to have him recalled and ordered to confinement in his own house, for nine or ten months. Officially he received the Queen's displeasure by what she called his, "shallow judgement in diplomacy". 5 years later however, in 1591, Sackville took the prestigious title of Chancellor of the University of Oxford, better still in 1599 he became Lord Treasurer, a position he kept until his death on account of his capable, if uninspired, financial management skills. He made quite some personal acquisitions: in 1604, Sackville bought Groombridge Place near Tunbridge Wells. His other houses included Knole House (granted to him by the Queen), in Sevenoaks, and Michelham Priory, in East Sussex, as well as Dorset House, near Fleet Street, London - later burnt down in the Great Fire of London.
Thomas Sackville’s Armour It is now part of the Wallace Collection in London. The next feather in his bow came when Queen Elizabeth acquired the manor of Bexhill in 1590 and granted it to Sackville.
Thomas Sackville's land dealings in many counties amassed a considerable fortune for his family, he had investments in the iron foundry business which was of course the main industry of the Ashdown Forest area.
After Elizabeth's death and James I's ascension to the thrown in 1603, he was created Earl of Dorset by the new king. The name 'Dorset' duly adorns various street, pub, etc. in the Sussex area (a paradox perhaps...) and this can be traced back to this title being conferred on Thomas.
Snubbing the grand and principal house at Knole. Thomas also drew up plans for a new, far more elaborate mansion on the Buckhurst Estate, than the existing family house. The current beautiful Buckhurst mansion's origins lie in this early 17th century time period based on Thomas's plans (though later modified by his son Robert).
In 1608, he died suddenly at the council table, having suffered a stroke (referred to then as "a dropsy on the brain"). To mark his significance in the public life of this country, his funeral took place at Westminster Abbey, though he was buried in the Sackville family vault at Withyham parish Church.
In around 1587, he was granted a royal license to commission a suit of armour from the royal workshops at Greenwich. In the world of armory this finely etched, blued and gilt armour, is one of the most well-loved and best-preserved examples of the Greenwich school of armour-making known to exist.

THE SACKVILLE NAME CONTINUED His son Robert Sackville, duly became the 2nd Earl of Dorset, inheriting among other estates, Knole in Kent and Buckhurst in Sussex, along with his considerable fortune. Thomas's oldest boy had been educated by Roger Ascham who had also tutored the Queen, Robert had gone onto the bar. During his life Robert also served as MP for various Sussex constituencies but perhaps unlike his father, appears not to have taken much part in the no doubt lively debates in the committees on which he served. However to his credit he was known for his philanthropy and for this East Grinstead itself will be forever indebted to him. Sadly Robert was not to enjoy his wealth and position for long, dying less than a year after his father in 1609. He is interred in the church of St Michaels, Withyham in his family's elaborate tomb, still there to this day.
Š With thanks to East Grinstead in Bloom. Photo by Andrew Taylor, Heypresto.uk
Sackville College Robert died of the plague (which was soon to be the scourge of Europe ), he was probably aware that his own death was imminent and he drew up his will only ten days before. In common with many rich and God-fearing men of the age, Robert felt it appropriate to set aside some provision for the poor. He left a sum of ÂŁ1000 to erect an almshouse for twenty-one men and ten women to live in East Grinstead. He gave very precise details of the way it was to be set up. He left the task of building the college to his executors and his son, Richard. Sackville College which stands at the eastern end of the High Street is a magnificent Jacobean house. The Earl retained one wing for his use when in the area. This has now been converted into flats and the building is still serving the same purpose as it did four hundred years ago. Now that's a legacy!
Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset,

Our Wildlife Wins Big!
Last month the keys to a brand new wildlife rescue ambulance were officially handed to local charity WRAS (Wildlife Rescue Ambulance Service) founder Trevor Weeks MBE. Two Incredible ‘SuperFundraisers’ Daryl Farmer of Forest Row and Polegate lad Ben Sherlock symbolically presented the brand car to a very pleased Trevor! The new ambulance is one of five which WRAS operate in the area. Schoolboy Ben Sherlock took the initiative to raise almost £1000 for WRAS through various fundraising events in his school and local community, no mean feat for a boy his age.
And readers will likely remember Daryl Farmer from Forest Row (who can forget?!) who spent the whole winter rowing solo across the Atlantic taking 96 days to complete the perilous journey and raising over £11,000 in the process. And the Eastbourne Co-op Community Fund helped with over £4,800 added to the pot. Put together the charity was able to purchase the vehicle, buy the appropriate equipment, pay for fuel, insurance and road tax. Trevor said, “This new ambulance will form one of our emergency response vehicles and be on call at
34
night time too. Having it, will help us continue to provide our life saving service. It is far quicker and more efficient than the older small van we used and we are delighted to have received so much support in getting it on the road. Without the support of people like Daryl, Ben and companies like Co-op we would not exist. “I personally feel very inspired by Daryl and Ben, they are a true credit to their local communities and I hope this encourages more people to help support WRAS and local charities, to be able to see first hand what a difference they can make” . The Rude Mechanicals back in Hartfield. The very popular Rude Mechanical Theatre will be coming back to The Croft, Hartfield, again this summer. You won’t want to miss it if you have seen them before. They have a brand new play with live music called ‘The Commercial Traveller’. Funny, romantic and moving, it demonstrates the gritty determination to overcome an apparently unassailable problem through absolute love. It is London, 1924, and rich and powerful tycoon and former East End barrow boy, Sir Arthur Cattermole, is not happy. His son, Gerald, whom he has spent his hard earned brass on to go to Eton, is in love with the girl next door, the beautiful Isabelle and daughter of hard up doctor, Cornelius Truss... Come dressed for an English summer! Open from 6pm for picnics. Bring your own low-backed chairs or a rug to sit on. Tickets are available from Caroline Tully 01892 770730 and www.therudemechanicaltheatre.co.uk. Adults £16, Seniors £15, Students £12, Children £9 & Families £40.
