Had enough of SLEEPLESS Nights? Are you suffering from insomnia, habitual snoring or chronic daytime tiredness? If so, read on…. Dr Peter Venn is a Consultant Sleep Physician who set up the Sleep Disorder Centre at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, in 1993, A leading expert in his field, he was the medical adviser on BBC1’s Goodnight Britain, and broadcasts regularly on both radio and television.
High blood pressure and diabetes are frequent associations with sleep apnoea, leading to a higher risk of stroke and heart attack in middle age. Symptoms include snoring, stopping or struggling to breath and excessive tiredness in the daytime. Literally thousands of lives have been transformed by Dr Venn with a device called a CPAP machine, which is used to treat sleep apnoea, and which guarantees to stop snoring completely – see photo. He calls this device “true preventative medicine that gives people their lives back” Like snoring, insomnia is an increasing problem for many people. Sleeping tablets are usually NOT the best treatment, but Dr Venn’s expert advice will help to select an appropriate alternative after a full discussion and assessment in outpatients.
Dr Venn says, ‘Poor sleep is very common, and many people have chronic problems. Snoring and breathing disorders affect about 4% of middle-aged adults. Sleep apnoea is a disabling condition in which sufferers stop breathing whilst asleep with both medical and social consequences.”

Hundred creWood

The author Kathryn Alto, an American landscape designer, historian and author based in Exeter, is writing a book about the connection between Winnie the Pooh author AA Milne and the Ashdown Forest landscape that inspired perhaps the most famous children’s stories of all time. We are lucky to have a Q&A with Kathryn about her upcoming book:
What inspired you to write the book about the Hundred Acre Wood? Exploring the Hundred Acre Wood is actually an assigned book from my publisher, Timber Press. Based in Portland, Oregon, they are the world’s largest and most prestigious horticultural press. They publish a range of beautiful, visually-rich and well-researched books by experts on natural history, botany, gardens and all things horticultural. This book comes on the heels of their recent release, the best-selling Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life: The Plants and Places that Inspired the Classic Children’s Tales. My editor was interested in the further exploring the connection between landscape and literature with what is arguably the greatest children’s book in the England language. I explored it and realised there is much to say. I am having so much fun writing it.
How would you say Winnie-the-Pooh brings out the ‘taking us back to nature’ concept? ‘Play’ for AA Milne and his brother was beyond the pavement and playgrounds. Encouraged by his father, Milne’s love of the outdoors began in the gardens of his family’s home in Hampstead village and soon extended outward. At a very young age, he was able to wander with his older brother Ken • June 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living
into then still rural parts of London as well as the leafy wooded wonderland of nearby Hampstead Heath. It was the real Christopher Robin as well as his fictional counterpoint. So in the books, the imaginary Christopher Robin is a little boy wandering the landscape without adults. It is just he and his imaginary friends. It is of course a fictional world but it was based on memories of his own golden childhood, observations of his own son Christopher Robin and his imagination as a writer. It is a world in which imaginative play and wandering the landscape without adults is important. We need to give our children more freedom in the natural world and let them experience more freedom to learn independence, develop their imaginations and negotiate life’s challenges.
How would you say AA Milne’s own childhood influence him as a writer? AA Milne, who lived at Cotchford Farm, Hartfield, was an avid walker all his life. The forest and woods had a direct influence on the landscape he and EH Shepard, his illustrator, created. It was not unusual for A.A. Milne and his brother to wander 4-5 miles before school in the morning; they just needed to be at their desks by 7am. Their father was the headmaster at his school and he wholly trusted the boys, both of whom

were excellent students and trustworthy. They never got into (too much) trouble. Milne was born in 1882 and even for those times, this freedom to explore was unusual. I am confident it directly influenced his imagination. His father was also an avid walker and took the boys on frequent walking tours throughout southern England. Milne collected shells, bird eggs and butterflies and also wrote about his adventures. Memories of his own boyhood in the natural world directly influenced him when he briefly turned to writing children’s verse and the Winnie-the-Pooh books. I relate some of the more hilarious episodes of his childhood in Part 1, the biography of Milne. (Part 2 is about iconic places in the Hundred Acre Woods and the real landscape; Part 3 is a natural history of Ashdown Forest.).
What information would you be interested in hearing about from the local area? I am interested in favourite walks people like to take with their children in Ashdown Forest and the Five Hundred Acre Wood. Also, what do people find particularly interesting and appealing about the landscape? It is an unusual landscape and has been described by some as harsh. What is your favourite part of the landscape and why?
Here is an extract: from Kathryn book ‘EH Shepard illustrates the Enchanted Place as a beautiful sanctuary of golden light and long thoughtful shadows. It is, in real life, illuminated and wholly enchanting and much more, a place where magical thinking is still allowed. Indeed with a sweep ‘/+ important. Doing Nothing can underestimated. The Enchanted Place is lovingly recalled by readers of the Winnie-the-Pooh books as it represents a time and space when a child can make sense of his or her world through imaginative play. Written in 1928, four years before the real Christopher Robin goes to school, the story may have been Milne the father reflecting on the time when his own son would leave home for Stowe, a boarding school in Buckinghamshire, at the age of 13. It could be Milne reflecting on his own childhood when he left his home at the 11 for Westminster. Perhaps it was a reflection on childhood itself, or a combination of all three as life and art blend together.’

June Tips for Parenting We’re not experts! Just parents like you with a few ideas you might like ... 1. Share your own passion/hobbies with your kids. With the intensity of life these days many of us have lost track of our own passions. We’re often in the groove of catering to our children’s activities that we’ve no time left to share our own hobbies/passions with them. When you do share the activities you personally enjoy with your kids, your own delight will be infectious. It will also be good for them to see their parents happy & enjoying an activity (rather than stressing or in a rush all the time!). Trick is to keep it simple. 2. Conquer Clutter. Clutter can be a ‘cranky-mum’ trigger; adapt a ‘no-prisoners’ approach to clutter, especially paper! Only hold on to papers you really need, become ruthless about which 10 • June 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living
papers you’re willing to keep. Grooving in a routine can also help with clutter: e.g. when they come from school, hanging up coats, putting shoes away, placing bags in the right place, etc. 3. Routinely putting aside some ‘Me Time’. Put aside time to go for a walk, read a book, etc. these are one simple way to have some ‘time out’. Mothers can contend with so many different things during a day that it can all get a bit overwhelming. Some solitude allows us to refresh ourselves and gives you a break from just ‘giving’ all the time. It allows us to go back ‘into the fray’ with a new head on.

How well do you know your Woodlands?
Summer Beauty Tips By
THE FINISHING TOUCH
which is the most densely wooded part of England? Would it surprise you to learn that the High Weald spanning West Kent, North Sussex and a small part of Surrey, and of which Ashdown Forest is a part, has three times more woodland than the national average? Remarkably, 70% of it is Ancient Woodland – meaning it has been in existence continuously since 1600 or before and contains rare gills (small streams). To celebrate the heritage of this area the High Weald AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) Unit has produced a guide to Woodlands in the Weald which looks at how humans and nature have combined to create a unique wooded landscape that is a refuge for wildlife, rich in archaeology and valued for rural crafts, commerce and recreation. Ancient semi-natural woodland is made up of native tree species and is the most ecologically rich and diverse habitat type in the UK. 12 • June 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living
Much of the ancient woodland in Kent, Sussex and Surrey has been managed for centuries by skilled workers, using a rotational coppice system. This ensured that a renewable supply of wood was always available - especially for charcoal, fencing and building materials. Traditional coppicing is an important woodland management technique, creating a habitat that has vital biodiversity benefits. In fact, many British flowering plants, mammals and insects thrive under this rotational system – some of the rarest species are now only found in working coppice. The guide, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, also highlights the woodland that is accessible to the general public across the High Weald, so makes a great companion for naturelovers. For a free copy of the Woodlands in the Weald guide, please contact Samantha Nicholas, at the High Weald AONB on 01580 879960 or s.nicholas@ highweald.org.
Ghds: Is your hair frizzy? Have curly hair but want it straight? Or straight hair you want curly? If the answer is yes to any of these then you will need a pair of ghds. You can smooth curl or straighten with them and they are now out in a fab new range of colour which look dip dyed! They don’t pull on the hair as much as normal straighteners and run down the hair in such a swift move you don’t feel it is straightening/curling. They look good and come in a neat box with sectioning clips and a guarantee so no need to worry about them breaking! So why don’t you give them a go! you won’t regret it! Want a tan but don’t want the UV Rays? Have a spray tan. Your natural tan can come through, so as it washes off your real tan will be there. Luckily there are spray tans that have no orange tones in and are very natural. A tan evens out your complexion and reduces the appearance of stretch marks and varicose veins. If you have a question you would like answered give us a call on 01342826005 or email tfthairandbeauty@gmail.com.

Rowing Solo across ‘The Pond’ Sharpthorne-based Danny Fitzgibbon will row the North Atlantic solo and unassisted from East to West, starting in October 2014 in Gran Canaria and finishing in Barbados in the West Indies roughly 3 months later, depending on ocean currents, stoms etc. He will cross 3000 miles of ocean up to 4000 metres deep, roughly along the tropic of Capricorn. Here, he explain why he’s undertaking this challenge and more about the experience ahead: What inspired you to want to row across the Atlantic? When I was a kid I read a book by Peter Bird. He was doing all kinds of rowing at sea from Scotland to Norway. It just got me really interested. I always loved the sea and the weather.... I recently met up with a friend of mine, former British Thai Boxing champion Pete Dwan, who works tirelessly giving Drug Education lectures to schools. He is really good at what he does, he gets fantastic feedback from the kids, parents and teachers, 100% positive! He is currently making a dvd that will be going out to every school (32,000) in the UK. He gets no funding for all this and so he works nights to support himself and his family. So I decided that this challenge would be a great opportunity to support his work. Have you ever done anything like this before? Nothing quite like this! I have done extreme sports however, like skydiving. I did close to 300 jumps, freefall and some competition skydiving. I also worked on fishing boats in the North Atlantic called long-liners catching tuna and swordfish. I have always enjoyed wide open spaces going back-packing in the Australian outback for a year. I also lived in Texas for a while and worked on ranches and even learned how to rope cattle. My wife and I went for a drive in Africa and went all around South Africa and Namibia. Had a blast all in the name of adventure!! What is going to be the hardest part? The hardest part I think would be the loneliness. Leaving friends and family and doing nothing but rowing for 2-3 months with no respite. When you get storms and huge waves its a bit tougher when you are completely alone. I have heard from a person who did it before that, on a cloudy moonless night. There are no stars, no light at all only a torch maybe. You can’t see your hand in front of you, you know there are sharks out there but you can’t see them...... I said “thanks for that one, pal” :-) What do you need in terms of local support? What would be really good is for local businesses who would like to sponsor this campaign. We are offering very good opportunities for businesses to get their company name on the boat. We put them on our website with links etc. We can really promote their business and in return they are helping an excellent cause. What do you think the highlight of the trip will be? Lions, Tigers & Bears, Oh My! As the three had found comfort in each other during their years of mistreatment, the staff soon realized that they shouldn’t be separated.
Baloo the bear, Leo the lion, and Shere Khan the tiger (known as BLT) were brought together as 2-monthold cubs and have since grown up as a family. The unlikely trio were originally owned by a drug dealer as a status symbol but he didn’t care for them properly, this lead to poor health and injuries. Over 10 years ago they were brought to Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit centre in the US that cares for animals in need. 18 • June 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living
Some years later the government passed new laws requiring big cat enclosures to have 16 foot fences put up, which were to take effect late last year. Baloo, Leo and Shere Khan’s fence was only 8 feet high. If the fence was not put up then the three animals would have to split up... The only problem was, the new fence would cost a staggering $489,000! Luckily, after lots of public interest and support the sanctuary was able to raise the funds in time through a series of challenges and crowd-funding. And so once more, all is safe and sound in the world of BLT.

To Bee
to be This month I would like to pay homage to one of the most prolific foragers known. One, whom without its amazing abilities, the planet would never exist as we know it. I am talking about the Honey Bee. As a forager and herbalist I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Honey Bee. I would not have the abundance of plants available to me, were it not for the pollination carried out mostly by bees. In fact they pollinate more than three quarters of UK wild plants. They are so successful at pollinating plants that it would cost the farming industry an estimated £1.8 Billion pounds to do this themselves. Imagine the cost implication on the food industry should this be a reality. Unfortunately this is starting to become a reality as bee populations are under threat and decline due to the use of Neonicotinoid pesticides. So before it is too late, I would love to make you more acquainted with the Honey Bee (Apis mellifera). Ever since man discovered the first wild beehive and tasted the sweet honey inside, we have had a close relationship with the Honey Bee. So precious was the honey to early man that they sought ways to keep bees and so began the first steps in beekeeping. Bees will forage up to about 3 miles from the hive if necessary, for both pollen and nectar. It is understood that a teaspoon of honey will contain the nectar of at least 5000 plants. Pollen is collected to feed young bee larva and in the process pollination occurs. Nectar is drunk by the bees and stored in their stomachs. On return to the hive this is regurgitated and the process of consuming and regurgitating is repeated into wax cells. The mixture is then fanned until most of the liquid has evaporated and what they are left with is honey. Honey is approximately 20% liquid and 80% solids. In this state it is very stable and sealed into wax cells until required by the colony. Along with plant enzymes, glucose and fructose, it is a complex combination of enzymes, plant pigment, organic acids, esters, antibiotic agents and trace minerals. There are over 75 different compounds which include carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins. Unlike sugar, honey is high in number of vitamins and calcium. 20 • June 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living
Honey Bees are especially attracted to wild medicinal plants, the exact ones that I as a herbalist and forager, would be looking to use. And the nectar of these plants contains the medicinal properties of the plant. This would go a long way to explain the amazing healing properties that honey contains. It has been shown to have a marked effect in aiding the healing of wounds and burns and strengthening the weak and fragile. Mead, a wine made from fermenting honey with yeast, has throughout history been known as the elixir of life. Mead is the most ancient of fermented beverages. It pre-dates wine and beer and would have been discovered by ancient man. It is as complex, fragrant and exquisite as wine made from grapes. It not only tastes wonderful but stabilises the all the properties of honey previously discussed. Hence why I have been making and experimenting with it for many years now. It ages well once bottled. And can be infused with wild plants to further enhance certain medicinal aspects. So I would encourage any of you to please contact a local beekeeper and purchase raw honey from them direct. Not only would this of huge benefit to your health but you would be ensuring the survival of this endangered insect that we cannot afford to lose. Raw honey is unpasteurised and so still contains all the medicinal aspects and is of a huge benefit to those suffering from seasonal asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and hay fever. If you would like any further information on how to utilise honey for health or in the ancient techniques of making mead then please get in touch. Contact details below.

New Laws on Window Blind Safety Local company PENUMBRA BLINDS welcome new laws on window blind safety which came into effect in April. They are a member of the British Blinds and Shutters Association (BBSA), which has campaigned for safer blinds and has worked with the UK government and EU standard bodies to make a ‘child safety standards’ for new blinds much more stringent. The new regulations will make it illegal to sell or professionally install a window blind that does not meet the standards. The rules include maximum cord and chain lengths, the fitting of safety devices at the point of manufacture, product warnings, point of sale information and instructions on packaging. STUART MUNDAY, Managing Director of PENUMBRA BLINDS, says “ We fully support the new regulations and as well as ensure all new blinds we manufacture and supply are compliant and are fitted correctly, we are also ready to help any customer who has existing window blinds with cords or chains. We can fit to make these safer.” Since 2009 the BBSA has worked tirelessly to educate customers about window blinds with cords or chains
which could form a hazardous loop and it’s ‘make it safe’ campaign is endorsed by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) and the Royal Society Prevention of Accidents (RSoPA). Should you wish for Penumbra to visit and survey your blinds, please call 01892 825522 or visit our website www.penumbrablinds.com. The Military on Ashdown Forest 1939-1945
By the time that war was declared on September 3rd 1939 the government had already drawn up plans to try to protect the general public. As early as 1935 East Sussex Council had set up an Air Raid Committee. The Home Office recognised the need for more fire protection and under the ARP Act of January 1938 a body of volunteers was trained to become the Auxiliary Fire Service. Then, in June 1939, a first police reserve was formed, mainly from retired officers.
National Registration took place on 29th September 1939 when householders were asked questions similar to those used for census details. After which identity cards were issued to every member of each household, gas masks were issued and details of how to black out both houses and motor vehicles. The Women’s Voluntary Services were given the responsibility for the housing of evacuees from the cities to the Ashdown Forest area. And in May of 1940 there was an appeal asking for able-
bodied men between the ages of 18 and 65, not already engaged on National Service, to enrol in the Local Defence Volunteers. In July of the same year the name changed to the ever memorable and much beloved ‘Home Guard’. British Territorial troops moved into this area in 1939/1940. Kidbrooke Park, the Welsh Bakery and fields behind the Brambletye were used in Forest Row; Chapelwood Manor and Pippingford Park were used in Nutley; and at Chelwood Gate, the Isle of Thorns and Woodgate. The first troops to arrive at the Isle of Thorns were the 1st Battalion London Irish Rifles in October 1939. War murals of camp life were later found on the walls of the barn. Canadian soldiers so after moved into the Isle of Thorns and would, in the pursuing years, form a very strong presence in the whole of the Ashdown Forest area. Woodgate housed many

regiments, both British and Canadian during the war. For instance, the Royal Corps of Signals were there in 1941. In Chapelwood Manor, Nutley, British troops arrived in early 1940 to train, and eventually landed in Norway. The Norway campaign lasted from 9th April to 10th June 1940. By July 1940 it was thought that a German invasion would take place in September, this ushered in the first large scale exercise to take place on Ashdown Forest. The New Zealand brigades 2 NZEF(UK) came from Aldershot and had to cover the southern approaches to Crowborough, and to counter attack any landings which may begin on the south coast, east of the river Ouse. A now famous, secret radio transmitter “Aspidistra” was also built underground in a bunker at King’s Standing in 1941/1942. Canadian troops, the Queen’s Own Rifles of Toronto were, by

This particular regiment landed on Juno beach on D Day ahead of the tanks, and tragically suffered the highest number of Canadian casualties. The first Canadian troops to move into Chapelwood Manor, was the 3rd Canadian Division Reinforcement Company on November 9th 1941. As the camp
was still under construction at the time, one third of the men had to be engaged in making paths using cinders and rubble trucked from London. This particular company then moved to Hailsham late May 1942. But In August 1942 the 17th Field Regiment RCA (Royal Canadian Artillery) moved into Chapelwood Manor, thus keeping the Canadian presence in this area. They were subsequently sent to Italy in 1943. Another Canadian Airforce regiment, the 15th Field Regiment RCA, moved into the area in 1943 and left in July 1944 for Normandy. So it came as no great surprise when, in 2010, approximately 70 Canadian hymn books with regimental stamps of the 15th Field Regiment RCA, the 17th Field Regiment RCA, H.Q. RCA 4th Canadian Armoured Division and 5th Canadian Armoured Division dated 1943, were found in Nutley Church grounds.

Sergeant David Hazzard, a Canadian from Toronto with The Queen’s Own Rifles was selected for officer training at Aldershot, and in March 1942 graduated as a lieutenant and returned to his regiment at Pippingford Park in charge of a platoon.
Nutley girls, Sadie, Daphne, Gwendoline and another girl, Chris shared picnics on the Ashdown Forest. the title page of the official history of the Canadian army in the Second World War with another painting of tanks on Ashdown Forest on display in the Imperial War Museum, London. The Crowborough army camps were home to both British and Canadian troops from early 1941. In the early Spring of 1942 British troops were based at Maresfield Camp and Crowborough Camp, and sailed as part of the 8th Armoured Division to the Western Desert in May 1942. In fact, General Montgomery inspected these troops in April 1942. The Fort Garry Horse Regiment with their tanks was at Crowborough East Barracks and West Camp from 20 October 1942 to 28 December 1942. The 1st. Hussars with tanks were at Crowborough Warren Camp in December 1942 and moved to Hove in January 1943. Both these tank regiments later had the Duplex Drive (Swimming Tanks) and landed on Juno beach on D Day. In Forest Row by September 1943 an ambulance unit of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps was billeted in some of the larger houses of the Ashdown Forest area and in Broadstone Farm. Many large houses had been requisitioned by the government for housing troops. For instance, Plaw Hatch, the home of Lord and Lady Kindersley was divided to house army officers, with the troops in the grounds. Birch Grove the home of the then future Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, housed around 70 evacuees from a london school. He and his family thus moved into a cottage on the estate. In the autumn of 1943 the Canadian South Alberta Regiment moved into the camp in Maresfield. They 26 • June 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living
were equipped with Sherman tanks and trained on the forest until they left on 18th July 1944 for Normandy. Major David Vivian Curry who belonged to this regiment was awarded the only VC of the Normandy campaign. He survived the war. In this area, many of the roads & forest had been damaged by tanks. Major Curry had also in fact been the officer in charge of compensation claims for such damage. With Canadian troops leaving Pippingford Park for D Day, more troops moved in to follow the first landings. A V1 Flying bomb on 5 July 1944 killed 8 soldiers and injured 17. Though Luckily most of the regiment had recently moved further south for embarkation to France, therefore denying more casualties. On 29 August 1944 another V1 bomb landed in this area, on Marsh Green Military Camp, Hartfield killing 3 soldiers and injuring 45. There was considerable damage to the camp. Pippingford Park was later maintained as a rehabilitation centre for Canadian troops in 1945. More about the Canadian Army in Nutley during WW2 The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada was mobilized on 24 May 1940, and after training in Canada was posted to England in July 1941. By December of the same year, they had arrived at Pippingford Park, Nutley. In January 1942 a play was performed in Nutley titled “ The Stolen Spell”, with the band of this regiment providing the music. Countess Eleanor Castle Stewart of Old Lodge, Nutley, and her son, Robert, who was killed in Italy in 1944, were also in the cast. He explains that the regular soldiers were in huts in the grounds, while the officers slept and ate in Pippingford Manor, which the Canadians called “ Pip House”. David, enjoying his first officers’ perk, mentioned his “good fortune” of a real bed. In his first letter home, he gives some history of the estate, and describes the dungeons under the house; he marvels at the beautiful scenery and the ‘lovely’ old houses in this area. The first major combat operations were of course during the invasion of Normandy. The Queen’s Own Rifles landed on NAN sector of Juno beach during D-Day and captured the strategic seaside resort of Bernieres –sur- Mer. Though they secured the resort, the QOR had the highest number of casualties amongst the Canadian regiments, with 143 killed, wounded or captured. Lt. David Hazzard (later promoted to captain) did, however, survive the war. It took him over a month to work out the solution to his puzzle. 4. It was originally known as the magic cube and was sold in a Budapest toy shop in 1975. 28 • June 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living
5. The puzzle consists of twenty-six unique miniature cubes, which each included a concealed inward extension that interlocks with the other cubes, while permitting them to move to different locations. 6. It was renamed the Rubik’s Cube in 1980. 7. It won Toy of the Year in 1980 and 1981. 8. Over 350 million Rubik’s Cubes have been sold worldwide – making it the bestselling toy of all time.

I have used Lewis Gibbs of Imperial Framing Ltd, for a number of jobs. Lewis listens and carries out his work to his client’s specification. He gets the job done quietly and efficiently with a really positive attitude. Compared to larger building companies in the area where your money gets sucked by admin costs and the workforce time and again are poorly skilled, it pays to work on a one to one basis with Lewis. His quotes are sensible; I highly recommend him.” Simon W. Desmond, Newick, East Sussex 2013

Classic chicken Korma This mild chicken curry is bound to please and it’s healthier than a standard korma recipe.
What to do:
Ingredients: 2 tsp vegetable oil 500g skinless chicken chunks 1 large onion chopped 1 apple cored and chopped 2 garlic cloves crushed 2 tbsp Korma curry paste 400ml vegetable or chicken stock 25g sultanas 25g ready-to-eat apricots chopped 300g easy cook long grain brown rice 1 tbsp cornflour 1 banana 4 tbsp natural yoghurt 1 tbsp fresh coriander chopped, to garnish 1 pinch ground black pepper
T
Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 40 mins
1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan. Add the chicken, onion, apple and garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring often. Add the curry paste and cook for a few seconds, stirring. 2. Add the stock, raisins or sultanas and apricots. Bring up to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, for 35 minutes. Add a little more stock or water, if necessary. 3. Brown rice takes 30-35 minutes to cook, so put it on to cook in plenty of simmering water. 4. Just before serving, blend the cornflour with 2 tbsp cold water and add to the curry, stirring until thickened. Slice in the banana, cooking gently for another few moments. Check the seasoning, adding pepper, if needed. Serve, topping each portion with 1 tbsp yoghurt and accompanied with the rice. Garnish with coriander, if using.

Need a Cycling Challenge?
New Bike Hire Scheme in Forest Row
‘The Wall’ for the brave & the bold This ride takes on the famous Kidds Hill, known as ‘The Wall’. A steep and relentless climb not to be tackled by the faint hearted! A small loop around the edge of the Ashdown Forest taking in Nutley with it’s famous windmill and Chelwood Gate, then across to Wych Cross, deep into the Ashdown Forest before taking on Kidds Hill one of the best climbs in East Sussex. Over the top, brings you to King’s Standing with its fantastic views across the Ashdown Forest, then a lovely downhill ride towards Maresfield where you can enjoy a well deserved drink in the Forester’s Arms at Fairwarp or the Chequers Inn in Maresfield.
Thanks to a grant of almost £12,000 from East Sussex County Council, a new pick up point for cycle hire has been launched in Forest Row - and if all has gone to plan it should now be open! The Parish council has converted the old public toilets in the Lower Road car park into a place where bikes can be borrowed, it’s all part of a community cycle hire scheme. With an online booking system, people will also be able to make use of a new maintenance and repair service. A similar scheme has been successfully run in the village of Hassocks. So fingers crossed this will work just as well! For further details, contact the parish council office on 01342 822661.
Crowborough Arts to mark WW1 Centenary The community organisation which organises literary, craft and drama exhibitions and workshops in the town, is planning an event in September to mark the centenary of the First World War. The commemoration, to be held on the 20th September at St Denys’ Church in Rotherfield, will draw on material from Sussex and will include drama, poetry, music and projected images. The organisers are particularly looking for people interested in singing in the choir at the events. Christine Roberts from the Literary Events Group said: Music will play an important part in the programme and under the direction of Chris Harris we are looking to form a mixed voice choir of up to 50 voices. We are using the shorter vocal suite of “The Armed Man” (A Mass for Peace) by Karl Jenkins. The choir will rehearse on: Tuesday 29th July, 19th August, 26th August and 9th September and Thursday 18th September. There will also be a dress rehearsal on Friday 19th September at 8pm for a run of the music. All rehearsals are from 7.45-9.15pm at St Denys’Church, Rotherfield.
With grateful thanks to Ashdown Forest Cycling for providing this information. See www.ashdownforestcycling.co.uk. 32 • June 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

Gardening in July Inspired by the plethora of ideas delivered direct to our front rooms from the Chelsea Flower Show there is no better time to fill your garden with colour and scent. June brings long warm days and plants can’t resist showing off their beautiful flowers, a soft breeze will carry the scent through the garden – perfect at any time of day.
Lawns
Roses Regular dead heading will ensure a long season of new roses and keep the shrub looking attractive. Climbing and rambling roses will need training and tying in so they don’t become out of control, this also helps to support the stems when laden with roses.
Camellia & Rhododendron These will have finished flowering and benefit from a deadheading. A regular 2 weekly feed throughout the Summer will keep the leaves green and glossy.
Perennials Taller plants such as Delphinium may need staking to support the long flower stems. Deadhead perennials regularly as this will encourage new growth and repeat flowering. Regular watering will stop plants drying out. If you have gaps in the border then fill them with Dahlia, Canna and Lilies for an exotic display. Keep removing perennial weeds.
At this time they should be lush and green and mowed once a week. If it’s a very dry month then don’t cut the grass quite so short.
Patios If you haven’t done so already then now is the time to fill your pots with summer bedding for an instant display of colour. If you’re concerned about watering then choose geranium and pelargonium as they can tolerate slightly drier conditions. Small trees and shrubs can look good in pots but remember to water them, even if it rains, they don’t like to dry out.
Fruit and vegetables Strawberries and rhubarb can be harvested and enjoyed now and the first crop of early potatoes (with a sprig of fresh mint). Thin out the fruits on the apple tree and protect your soft fruits from the birds.
Herbs
If you enjoy visiting other gardens, either for inspiration or because you don’t have a garden then check out the National Gardens Scheme (NGS). People open their gardens to the public on particular days, money raised goes to charity and you can often get to enjoy delicious cake and a cup of tea.
A very useful addition to any garden, however small. They look great in pots and kept close to the kitchen door makes it easy to cut them for cooking.
