“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

thank you to the team from Southview Close in Crowborough for their help in clearing the rides on the North Chase.

Ranger Life The final early morning bird walk produced some spectacular photographs of Woodlark, Goldfinch, and Stonechat (in their perched position) and a diving Stonechat - see photo by volunteer ranger Rob Bright. We are looking forward to the nightjar sunset walks this June and July.

My personal highlight of the month was organising a lift to the Airman’s Grave for the great-grandmother of one of my volleyball players at East Grinstead Volleyball club. It would have been her great-granddad’s 100th birthday (see photo below) so it was a very special occasion.

The rangers and countryside team have had a busy couple of months with fence and ride repairs around the forest. The highlight being a sandstone culvert at Picketts Puddle below Friends Clump in Old Lodge Bottom. A big

CROWBOROUGH LIONS LATEST We are often approached by members of the public asking, “what do you do exactly?” Well, over the past forty-odd year we like to think we've served the community by raising funds for many good causes. We attend local events with popcorn, candyfloss and children’s crossbows and, with the exception of the Crowborough Hospital Fête, half of the net funds we raise is given to the fair promoters, so if you have an event you would like us to attend do please contact us. Other fundraising events include our Easter egg raffle, the big quiz, darts marathon, marshalling Crowborough Runners 10k, the Christmas carols sleigh and not forgetting our weekly bookstall. At this point, we must thank you all for your generosity and support throughout the year! Some of the projects we've supported: Crowborough ATC 1414 Squadron, Jarvis Brook Guides, Wealden Talking News, and the children’s ward at Pembury Hospital.

THE POWER OF LEMON

• Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent. Have a tough stain? Put lemon juice onto stains on white clothes and allow them to dry in the sun. The combo of lemon juice and sun is a natural bleacher. • Make your own glass cleaner: Mix two cups water with ¼ cup distilled vinegar or cider vinegar, and ½ teaspoon of washing up liquid and 2 tablespoon of lemon gives it a beautiful fresh smell and adds to the cleaning efficacy. • Give your kitchen top a polish and disinfect with lemon. Simply cut a lemon in half and rub half over the kitchen top, gently giving it a light squeeze as you go along. Leave for 15/20 mins, then polish with a soft cloth. It will leave a lovely natural scent and keep the kitchen disinfected.

QUICK QUIZ Anwsers 0n page 19 1. Which European country has the longest coastline? 2. How long is a rugby union match, excluding stoppage time? 3. What is the national flower of the Netherlands? 4. What question did the ‘Bells of Old Bailey’ ask in the nursery rhyme ‘Oranges and Lemons’? 5. Which is colder: The North Pole or the South Pole? 6. Alaska is the largest US state by area, but which is second largest? 7. What was the national currency of Greece before it adopted the Euro in 2001? 8. Which football team has won the FA cup the most times? 9. What was the 1995 role that made Colin Firth a household name? 10. Which actress will be stepping in to the famous role of Mary Poppins in a Disney film to be released later this year?

SUDOKU

• Clean and disinfect cutting boards with lemon. Pour/squeeze lemon directly onto a cutting board and rub well. If the board is stained, leave the lemon juice on the stain and allow it to sit for a good while until the stain has faded. • Lemon can be used to remove rust stains. Squeeze juice directly onto the stain and sprinkle cream of tartar over the stain. Rub it until the stain disappears... This process may need to be repreat on tougher stains.

A World of Pianos The Piano Shop Kent near Tunbridge Wells has a fantastic selection of pianos: upright, grand, new and restored. There are popular starter pianos such as Yamaha uprights and a wide range of other great makes, as well as digital pianos. We also have a workshop and offer restoration. Having a good piano to play and practise on is vital to the enjoyment of making music and to progress. Some think that an old piano bought as a ‘beginner instrument’ that perhaps ‘needs tuning’ would be good enough for them or their child. But the reality is that a piano with an uneven touch, poor tone or perhaps loose tuning pins, will limit enjoyment and discourage learning. Our used pianos have been thoroughly reconditioned and are guaranteed for 5 years. This gives you the confidence that any pianist will be supported in achieving their potential.

FOUR OF THIS YEAR'S

Timeless Kitchen Trends By Rachael Workman of East Grinstead based Kitchens Bespoke

Trends in kitchen design are ever evolving, and it can be overwhelming to pick through what are fads and what are destined to dominate our inspiration boards for months or years to come. For us, we like to embrace innovation and exciting design but avoid gimmicks. We look to create designs that are timeless, stylish and practical.

a flawless and uninterrupted feel to your kitchen, seamless, uncluttered and utterly sophisticated.

COLOUR More and more, our customers are being braver with colour, picking an accent colour for a kitchen island or choosing a bold statement colour to bring a vibrancy to the whole space. We love this experimentation and variation. Neutral tones will always be popular but graphite greys and deep blues are really popular this year, and look absolutely great in any home.

STYLE Shaker kitchens are one of the most popular styles of classic kitchen design and for good reason. As at home in a new build or in a farmhouse, they provide a real homeliness and texture. One of the best things about the shaker style is the use of painted wood for your cabinetry, this means you can have your kitchen literally any colour you choose, ensuring your kitchen truly reflects your taste.

Being bold with colour doesn’t have to mean choosing bright colours either, we were really excited to see black taking centre stage on a recent trip to see innovative kitchens in Germany. Not everyone is going to want the

However, if you are looking for a much more contemporary feel, a modern handle-less kitchen is the way to go. This look creates

TIMELESS KITCHEN TRENDS

subjected to the most clutter and daily use, so it is important that they are spaces that actually work well and don’t depress you by the clutter and chaos! Our customers are finding that they love their kitchen so much, the ample storage, stylish solutions to awkward spaces and cohesive design, that they are now looking to the utility and boot rooms as well. This enables them to have a space that not only works brilliantly for normal family life but also looks great too. We are designing more and more of these additional practical spaces, and see this interest in improving the utility areas only increasing.

dominance of black throughout the kitchen but used strategically, it is such a great colour for adding drama, especially in sinks, handles or on just one or two tall cabinets.

So when you’re planning your new kitchen, be a bit bolder with your colour choices, pick a couple of design features to highlight and make them into real statements, and lastly, don’t forget that your small, practical and pokey utility spaces can be transformed into stylish extensions of your kitchen. Armed with the confidence to embrace a new kitchen design, your new kitchen will maximise your space, budget and reflect your style perfectly.

FEATURES The Pantry: the one feature we have been asked to include in every classic kitchen we’ve designed this year, is our beautiful shaker pantry unit. This is a freestanding, bespoke unit so you don’t need a period home with inbuilt pantry to hide your clutter and tins! The enthusiasm for these pantry units shows no signs of abating, whatever the space, they neatly provide a practical but stylish storage solution. The units look particularly great in an accent colour too, offering a great point of contrast to the rest of the kitchen.

If you would like to know more about Kitchens Bespoke visit: www.kitchensbespoke.co.uk or call 01342 313133.

Downstand work surface: the worktop feature we’ve really seen take off is the downstand work surface. It works in laminate, solid wood, quartz or marble and just takes a worktop from being something functional to a statement, by continuing all the way to floor. This continuous surface creates a seamless, streamlined finish and is so stylish in any kitchen.

ADDITIONS Utility and boot rooms used to be the rooms you shut the door on, and it didn’t matter what they looked like. However, these spaces are

A WALK ON THE WILDSIDE! Crowborough’s Joni & Tim Hammond and family burst out of their comfortable suburban lives and took their children on a year long holiday, selling the family home, leaving their average income jobs and kissing goodbye to the rat race, commencing a tour of Europe in a campervan. Now returned, Joni’s penned a book about their journey. Here is a little Q&A with her about their experience:

What was the guiding reason you decided to pack everything in and go travelling as a family? It was accumulation of factors: my husband and I felt we were working too hard, being snappy, reactive parents and spending all our time running around trying to keep up with all the clubs/ activities/homework that having three kids entails; we were struggling to see the

benefits of it all. We spent too little time together and we figured there must be more to life. We had also been shocked by the death of two people close to us who had died in their early thirties. We realised that life is very short.

What was the highlight(s) of the whole experience? We can’t isolate one experience. We sat down with the kids one night, near the end of the trip, and asked them to recall their favourite bits. Whilst Tim and I might list places like Carnivale in Venice, sledging in the Sierra Nevada, Copenhagen, the boat trip in Dubrovnik etc., it was so wonderful to hear the kids list the ‘little things’. The things they had most enjoyed were playing ‘stuck in the mud’ on the beach; building dens in the park; canoeing on the river; learning to do’ bombs’ in the swimming pool; building a ‘duck hotel’ in the

What has the response been to the book so far? I love hearing from people who feel inspired to do a similar thing with their own children- even if it’s one for a few weeks. The world has so much to teach us- we should all try to get out there and see more of it!

What is biggest change, now that you are back? The hardest part of it all has been settling back into ‘normal’ life. Although the children were looking forward to getting back to school, this soon wore off and they are now forever asking when we can go off on another big trip. Who knows- they might just get their wish?! ‘A Family Gap Year: Europe: How to quit the rat race and see the world with your children’ can be bought on Amazon, and good local bookshops.

Butterbox Dexter Beef • Excellent, quality flavour, home bred, local beef • 100% grass reared - dry matured on the bone • Sustainable farming using little or no chemicals with emphasis on welfare for animals and environment. Butterbox Dexter herd of pedigree cattle was started in 1978 by John and Pat Garratt. “At that time there were less than 300 breeding females in Britain, there are now over 4,000 and we are one of the oldest herds in England,” says Pat Garratt. “When we first started to show the Dexters, there were no special classes for them. The judges really didn’t know what to think of them,” recalls Pat. Dexters are Britain’s smallest breed of cattle; they are ‘The Small Cow With The Big Future’. Their increase in popularity has underlined the quality of the excellent flavoured and award-winning beef. It is marbled with just the right amount of fat to improve the cooking quality, without giving cause for concern with healthy eating. Once people have tasted their first cut of Dexter they really do realise what good value it is.

Today the meat mostly leaves Butterbox Farm in fresh meat boxes ready for eating or home freezing. The animals are ready for beef when they are 27–30 months old, the meat is then dry matured on the bone for a minimum of 28 days. Peter Froggatt, the farm manager, says “The customers love coming to the farm to collect the meat. They are always welcome to see the cattle.” Gavin Morgan, who works alongside Peter as stockman, says “They are friendly and an easy breed to manage”. We sell our Dexter beef both in our 10kg meat boxes and by the quarter carcass, which is usually between 20kgs and 30kgs depending on the size of the animal. We do offer some cutting options for the quarters; see our meat box page at butterboxfarm.co.uk, where you can also find details of our lamb, hogget and mutton too.

Our calves are born in spring and autumn; they suckle their mothers for nine months. We use no artificial means to promote rapid growth. The cattle graze our natural pasture, which we manage with best practices of sustainable farming using little or no chemicals. In winter they come into spacious barns and feed on home produced hay and silage, giving us the 100% grass reared beef. The cattle mature slowly on this natural diet, which helps to give the meat its superb flavour that even top chefs now recognise as superior. Although not registered as an organic producer, Butterbox Farm chooses to follow many of the same principles; the key message to customers is clearly one of high welfare, tradition, harmony and respect for the environment, and the love of their livestock.

Welcome to the new Duke & Duchess of Sussex THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX / ALEXI LUBOMIRSKI

Our county of 'Sussex' was propelled to superstardom on the world stage last month for reasons we all know. It is unlikely that if you travel abroad people will ever again say they've never heard of Sussex from here on.... they may yet not know where it is, but they will know that it exists and has some kind of importance and significance. And indeed it does! In fact, the dukedom was first created over 200 years ago, in 1801, and conferred upon Prince Augustus Frederick, the sixth son of King George III. The title became extinct upon Prince Frederick's death in 1843, and it didn't pass down to his children who were considered illegitimate due to his marrying without royal permission. It was recreated for Prince Harry and was promised to him by the Queen back in 2011, to be granted on the occasion of his marriage.

Crowborough Town Council have announced they will be planting a new tree on Chapel Green to commemorate the royal marriage. I'm sure we can all agree that it will be a very exciting time indeed when we receive our first royal visit from our Duke & Duchess, the happy couple.

Chestnut Tree children’s hospice, making Now count. very own pop group in the music room. Where parents can just be parents, and not carers, and where siblings have people to talk to who understand.

Now is what life is all about...Every moment spent together. Every moment to remember forever...Now is what matters.

Then, when the time comes, Chestnut Tree House helps children and families say goodbye, in whatever way feels right for them, either at home or in the hospice itself. They offer ongoing bereavement support for the whole family.

So let’s make every one of them count...Let’s live for all the Nows. Chestnut Tree children’s hospice cares for 300 children, 60 of whom are in East Sussex, all of whom are unlikely to reach adulthood. Their Community Nursing Team visit families at home, taking children out to explore their local community or simply giving tired families and carers the chance to take a well-earned break.

It costs well over £3.5 million every year to provide Chestnut Tree House’s care and less than 7% of that comes from central government. They never charge children or families a penny, so rely heavily on the local community to fundraise.

Children and families can also visit Chestnut Tree House’s beautiful hospice near Arundel, where kids can be astronauts for the day in the multi-sensory room, discover creepy crawlies on a woodland walk, or form their

The Salomons

OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS

Near Tunbridge Wells, is a hidden historical gem, set in 36 acres of beautiful grounds. A “mansion of many marvels”, the Salomons Estate is an impressive Victorian mansion with a fascinating and eventful history. Its name helps preserve the memory of three generations of the extraordinary Salomons family. In 1829, the first Sir David Salomons (1797-1873), who made his money in banking and finance in London, bought “a very elegant small villa” set in extensive grounds, known at the time as Broomhill, as his country home. Around 1850, Sir David had the original villa pulled down and a more substantial country house was built. The enlarging and rebuilding of that house, together with the landscaping of the grounds, continued for most of the first baronet’s life, thus creating the imposing early Victorian structure which remains today.

THE SALOMONS OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS

From left: Sir David Lionel Salomons; the house was one of the first to have electric lighting; in 1874 Sir David Lionel Salomons built his first vehicle – an electric tricycle.

the bench from the Houses of Parliament from which Sir David spoke in 1851 has been preserved in the Salomons Estate Museum which houses a unique collection of paintings, photographs and mementos that document this highly unique family. It was given to him by friends, who bought it when new seats were installed.

Although a financier by profession, Sir David Salomons was also heavily involved in public affairs. He was elected an MP in 1851 as a Liberal candidate for Greenwich, but was not allowed to take his seat because, as a Jew, he would not swear the required Christian official oath. However, he did not withdraw quietly: instead he took the oath, but omitted the Christian phrases, and took his seat on the government benches. He was asked to withdraw, and did so on the second request, only to return three days later to defend his presence on grounds of having been elected by a large majority. He was eventually removed by the Sergeant-at-Arms, and fined £500 for having voted illegally in three divisions of the House.

The first Sir David Salomons had no children, but on his death he was succeeded by his nephew, Sir David Lionel Salomons (18511925), who was permitted to inherit the baronetcy by special remainder. A keen scientist and engineer from boyhood, Sir David Lionel added workshops and laboratories onto the house and experimented with electricity. The Salomons Estate mansion was one of the first houses to have electric lighting. At the back of the house, Sir David Lionel built an amazing ‘Science Theatre’ to demonstrate experiments to scientists and local people. Here he had magic lantern shows and played ‘recordings’ (using paper rolls) of famous musicians on the Welte organ.

In 1855 he became the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London and he was the first Jew to speak in the House of Commons. He also became the chief protagonist in the battle to secure for Jews, and other minorities such as Quakers and non-conformists, the political rights enjoyed by other Englishmen; it was not until seven years later that the law for MPs was finally changed. It was David who opened the campaign in public, fought out the issues in court, and laid himself open to considerable penalties, entering and speaking for his cause in parliament. Salomons was re-elected in 1859 and served as MP for Greenwich until his death in 1873. In fact,

Sir David Lionel was also a pioneer of motor car transport. He organised the world’s first motor show in 1895, held at Tunbridge Continues over the page.

Gallipoli. Tragically, the troop ship they were in, HMS Hythe, was involved in a collision with another in Mudros Bay and 154 men were drowned. Amongst them was David Reginald, who had given up his life-jacket to another soldier. You can see his medals in the museum. His tragic story was dramatized in a musical called ‘The Dreamers’, which was performed in Tunbridge Wells, in 2014 – 100 years since the beginning of the First World War. In 2015, the musical was performed in the West End.

Wells. He also managed to change the law so cars could travel over 4 mph and were no longer required to have someone walking in front with a red warning flag! He was an accomplished photographer too; in 1870 he invented an electric exposing camera and by 1895, when he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, he was experimenting with and showing cinematographic films. In 1874 he was granted a patent for his invention of an automatic railway signalling system. A man engaged in so wide a variety of scientific and artistic pursuits clearly felt himself confined even by the substantially extended house left to him by his uncle. So, acting as his own architect, he threw himself into a programme of further extensions, which lasted until the outbreak of the First World War. Sir David Lionel died on 19 April 1925 at the age of 74.

The Building By 1896 a dynamo had been installed to provide Salomons Estate with electricity for 1000 16-candlepower lights. As early as 1874 there was an arc light in the workshops, and by 1882 there were 60 lamps of 50 volts – supplied from accumulators up until 1911 when the current was supplied from the Tunbridge Wells plant. The Salomons Estate was the first building in the country to use electricity for cooking and other domestic work.

Sir David Lionel Salomons had married to Laura de Stern in 1882 and they had five children. David Reginald Salomons (18851915) was their only son. After studying at Cambridge and travelling in Japan, Captain David Reginald became one of the many casualties of the First World War.

1890. He played an active role in its design. The building was completed in 1894 at the immense (in those days) cost of £27,000. The design was taken from French chateaux, probably after visits to the Loire Valley. Comprising space for 21 horses and a coach house for 12 large carriages known as drags, this spectacular building used around 500,000 bricks – clamp-bricks came from the estate and the red bricks from Crowborough – and 15,000 cubic feet of Portland Stone. There was hot water heating throughout and Sir David Lionel introduced electric

lighting on his own system. However, in just a few years later, from 1895, the motor car was to become Sir David Lionel’s major interest. The Motor Stables As his passion developed, Sir David Lionel replaced the stables with what is probably now the finest example of early motor-carriage houses anywhere in Britain. With his customary expertise, Sir David Lionel thought of everything – from cavity walls to central heating, tongued and grooved boarded

ceilings, inspection pits (at just the right depth for the chauffeur to stand in) and a spiral staircase leading down to the chauffeur’s quarters. Sir David Lionel contributed an extensive chapter on “The Motor Stable and Its Management” to “Motors and Motor Driving” by Alfred C Harmsworth, published by Longmans Green in 1902 – other contributors included the Hon C S Rolls. The Hon C S Rolls was a frequent visitor to Salomons Estate and it would appear that his motto of “Only the best is good enough” would be equally applicable to Sir David Lionel. The Science Theatre and the Welte Organ The Science Theatre houses what is probably the finest Welte player pipe organ ever to be installed in Britain. It is in fact the only one of its type left in the world, the only other example was at the Welte factory in Germany,

three years to complete. In September 2006, the inaugural concert of the Welte Organ was held – the first time this magnificent instrument had been heard in well over half a century. Thanks to the far-sightedness of the last surviving daughter of Sir David Lionel Salomons, Vera Bryce Salomons, the House and the Estate was preserved as a centre of excellence and learning for future generations. To book lunches and dinners, hire rooms for conferences or weddings, and find out about events at Salomons Estate, telephone 01892 515152 or visit the website www.salomons-estate.com.

destroyed in World War II. Sir David Lionel and his wife, Laura, were obviously music lovers, having installed no fewer than three Welte pipe organs!

The museum is open to the public daily from 9am to 7pm. Guided tours can be arranged by prior appointment. Salomons Estate, Broomhill Road, Tunbridge Wells, TN3 0TG

This Welte organ is highly unique, housed in a private Victorian theatre, it is largely untouched by time and unravaged by man. To walk into this superb building is a breathtaking experience as one is immediately aware of its almost cathedral-like atmosphere.

Acknowledgement is made to the late John Sharp, the late John Wheeler and the late Douglas Bennett – members of the Sir David Salomons’ Society – in compiling this history.

It is doubtful if the Science Theatre was used for theatrical performances to any extent, Sir David Lionel would demonstrate his scientific inventions and discoveries to his scholarly friends and colleagues who sat upon plain wooden benches set in rows. The stage in the Science Theatre, upon which the main organ is installed, is extremely large, its lighting arrangements must have been at the cutting edge of technology of the day. Dimmer switches and facilities for colour mixing of side and footlights are still on the walls – a veritable museum of stage equipment. In 2003, with the help of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, work started to restore the organ to playing condition and took over
