Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Just had enough of being overweight? No matter how hard you have tried in the past, The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme could just be the answer to resolving your weight problem once and for all.

I

t can be extremely soul destroying when you just can’t seem to shift your excess weight, no matter what you do. If you have reached the stage where putting on any more weight is simply not an option for you, then read on.

improvements include blood pressure, cholesterol, mental alertness, skin conditions and even fertility. Clients often comment on just how impressed their doctors or consultants are with their weight loss and health improvements.

Improving your health

One-to-one support for weight loss and maintenance

Being overweight is no laughing matter when the physical strain on your body is starting to take its toll on your health. Your GP or your family may have expressed their concern and urged you to slim down – all very well if only you knew how to! Help is at hand to resolve your weight problem. Rachel and her team have helped over 3000 clients of all ages and from all walks of life to slim down successfully. Many come to see her as a last resort and are delighted to have achieved, and successfully maintained, the weight they want to be. A workable programme that’s easy to follow The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme is based on a simple four-stage eating plan: The first two stages deal with weight loss, while the last two stages deal with weight maintenance. This highly successful tried and tested programme is easy to stick to and more importantly, it works. The expected average weight loss of clients is 714 lbs. a month. As you can imagine, clients are more than happy with this motivating weight loss, especially for those who have struggled with their weight for so long.

Clients welcome the very personalised support provided. Time and again, clients comment that they couldn’t have lost the weight without the support and encouragement of Rachel and her team. Is there hope for you? Yes, definitely! “Thank you Rachel – the best programme. Not only have I lost more than my target weight but the inches dropped off, my skin looks great and my confidence has had a major boost. I am wearing clothes that I would never have dreamed of wearing and I can hold my head high once again. Everything about the programme makes sense, is easy to follow and the support from Rachel is superb. Thank you very, very much.” Anita East Grinstead

Foraging, a new Spring hobby? Spring is upon us and the hedgerows and gardens are starting to burst forth with new shoots. An exciting time in any foragers diary! I am often asked which plant, I would most recommend as an introduction to foraging. The answer is always nettles and Spring is the perfect time to pick this plant. There is probably no other plant that excites me in the way the humble nettle does. Now, at the start of spring, these new shoots are at their best. It is with a big smile and a real sense of gratitude that I harvest the tips of the shoots. And once my foraging bag is full, I cannot help taking in the sweet aroma. There is a real sweetness to them that is only revealed once the plant has been picked. The first thing I do when I get back home is pop the kettle on and throw a couple of nettle tops into a mug. Nettle tea has a crisp, earthy freshness to it. Stinging nettles, Urtica dioica, are very difficult to mistake due to their ferocious stings and so make a great introduction into the world of foraging. Not only are they easy to identify, but they are incredibly nutritious and medicinal too. As an Acupuncturist and herbalist I would recommend nettles when the signs & symptoms are pointing • April 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

in the direction of, thin hair, weak nails and dry skin. I am sure there are many ladies that recognise these. Nettles are a potent source of minerals, amino acids and protein. They are high in calcium, vitamin C and a great source of iron. It’s like spinach or broccoli on steroids. If ever there was a super veg this would be it and it’s growing right on our doorsteps. No air miles involved in bringing this to you plate. Healthy and sustainable! So the best way to access this would be to make a simple tea infusion or even better to make a wonderful, tasty soup:

Ingredients: • • • • • •

1 large onion 1 leek 300ml chicken stock 2 medium potatoes 1 handful of nettles Smoked streaky bacon

I start by sweating off the onion and leek in butter and a splash of olive oil. Once translucent and sweet I add the potatoes. These I prepare by washing and cutting into cubes. I don’t peel the potatoes as I feel there is too much flavour and goodness in the skin. I then add my chicken stock and additional water and bring the pot to the boil. Once boiling

I turn the heat down slightly and allow to simmer until the potatoes are cooked through. Then I add the nettles and simmer for a further 3-5 mins. I take the pot off the heat source and blend the whole lot and season with salt and pepper. Whilst I am preparing the soup I fry some smoked streaky back bacon until crispy. I serve the soup with the bacon and garnish with Hairy bitter-cress (Cardimine hirsute).

Notes: • As the Spring season turns to Summer and the plant goes to flower, the lower leaves develop a crystal which irritates the Kidneys and the urinary tract. • For any medical conditions, consult a qualified health practitioner before administering any remedies. • When foraging either consult an expert or be sure of your choices before consumption.

it around a little and blow it out. Leave to dry and then you’re ready to decorate.

Repeat at other end but continue to widen the hole at the other end by swirling the scalpel (or needle) around so it chips away at the sides.

2. You can use the following to decorate the eggs: stickers, spraypaint, metallic felt pens, etc. Food colouring can be used as an effective background colour.

Insert the skewer or needle, jiggle it around a little to break up the yolk - this will make it easier to blow the egg out. Gently blow out the egg. Afterwards put in a drop of water into the shell. Gently shake

You can also gently wrap elastic band around the egg and then spraypaint or paint. Take the bands off when dry for a fabulous effect. Silvery Fish-scales are a great pattern. There is a world of possibilities!

Advice for Pet Owners

Spring Beauty Tips

As a retired gamekeeper, now rural pest controller, I have noticed over the last few years a change in fox behaviour due to more foxes in our towns, villages and cities than ever before.

By

THE FINISHING TOUCH How can I style my hair quickly?

More and more people are reporting foxes with no fear of man; this has been created by the amount of people feeding foxes in gardens, which is definitely not recommended. As a pest controller I have seen an increase in fox diseases, mostly mange. Sarcoptic mange is virulent, and can spread to our pets, dogs, cats and sometimes to our children -in the form of scabies. When in gardens, foxes may rub themselves against posts, kennels and chicken coups etc. to relieve their irritation due to the mite. This may leave patches of fur behind, hosting the mites. Our pets then do the same and inherit the infected spore.

When it comes down to it, there are basically two kinds of blow outs, these are stick straight or bouncy waves. Side swept blowdry is a combination of both techniques. It combines the best of both techniques to create a polished hair style that doesn’t look too perfect. To get this fantastic result dry hair straight with a paddle brush, then follow after with a flat iron, turning it away from the face at the ends of the hair just to enhance the wave or bend depending on what you want. The waves give the look an effortless easy appeal which can be achieved every day. Deep conditioner seals the shafts of the hair leaving the hair silky and smooth. Use a deep conditioner at least once a week. Tinted moisturiser or foundation

your skin tone. Pucker your mother into a ‘kiss’ and add the bronzer underneath the cheek bone to add the ‘shadow’. Do not go more than two shades darker than your natural complexion. Self Tanner

The foxes can take up permanent residence in places such as garden sheds, decking and greenhouses, created by the lack of natural hunting for food. With easily accessible food left by humans in refuge sacks, bird feeders and unguarded chicken coups.

For a flawless finish you’ll want a tinted moisturiser for a sheer coverage . Or if you require a total all over coverage then you would be better using a foundation as it’s gives maximum coverage.

Stay with in two shades of your natural skin tone or use a self tanning moisturiser that darkens skin gradually over several days .

Is a semi-permanent way of smoothing and improving the condition of you hair which makes it more manageable which means it is heaven for those of us who find taming our manes a total chore. Nordic Walking Exercise that suits everyone! Torrential rain, slippery paths and deep mud did not keep my new Nordic Walkers from their “Learn to Nordic Walk” courses on Ashdown Forest! Many of them joined to get fit, some for social reasons and others because they have heard that it is a gentle way of improving health for all ages and abilities. They love to exercise outside, the feeling of exhilaration from being in the fresh air and exploring the beautiful Ashdown Forest with a sociable, relaxed group is second to none. One of the major points of difference between ordinary walking and Nordic walking is that it recruits upper body muscles, the triceps, chest, shoulders and upper back as well as the lower body muscles because you actively use the poles to propel yourself forwards. According to experts only swimming, rowing and cross –country skiing itself use as many different muscle groups.

workout. The sun is now shining and if you would like to get started, free “Come & Try” sessions are available throughout the year. Continue with a four week “Learn to Nordic Walk” course and adventure walk and you can then join any of my classes. With a NWUK Freedom card you can literally join in walks right across the UK with any of the 2,500 Nordic Walking UK Instructors!

Nordic Walking is not simply walking with poles; it is a specific technique, with the poles designed to be used in a manner that propels you forward, engaging the whole body whilst providing stability and balance. This method allows you to work harder with less perceived effort; strengthening the heart, lungs and core muscles whilst toning the entire body (even those bingo wings!). The use of the upper body also means that Nordic walking is much kinder on the joints and can burn around 400 calories per hour compared with 300 to 350 for ordinary walking! Possibly the biggest benefit though is that when you Nordic walk you can talk to others, making it a very sociable way to exercise in stunning outdoor scenery. Regular Nordic walkers join groups so they can enjoy being active and safe outdoors together unlike being in a gym which can be quite isolating. It’s great for those with health issues but equally beneficial for anyone who wants to turn a walk into a 14 • April 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

Lemon & raspberry trifles

Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 0 mins

Treat yourselves to this easy dessert with its wonderful raspberry sauce. This simple recipe is very quick to put together and makes a lovely Spring/Summer desert

What to do: 1. Beat the soft cheese with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy, then stir in the yoghurt. Add 1 tbsp of caster sugar with the lemon zest and juice, mixing well. 2. Put half the raspberries to one side, then puree the rest with a blender or simply mash them with a fork or potato masher. Stir them into the whole raspberries and add the rest of the caster sugar. 3. Divide the sponge fingers between 4 serving glasses or ramekin dishes and spoon half the raspberry mixture on top. Now spoon the lemon mixture into the dishes and finish off with the rest of the raspberry mixture. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve.

Ingredients: 250g lower fat soft cheese 125g low-fat vanilla yoghurt 30g caster sugar ½ lemon zest finely grated and 1tbsp juice 250g frozen raspberries defrosted, fresh would also work well 8 sponge fingers broken into pieces

Tip 1: If you make this recipe without the sponge fingers, it’s suitable for anyone with a wheat allergy too. Tip 2: Try serving the raspberry mixture spooned over fresh fruit, low-fat natural yoghurt, low-fat ice cream or hot porridge - it tastes superb! Notes: This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life ‘Supermeals for under a fiver’ cookbook

Natural England Grant for Crowborough Natural England has accepted Crowborough Common into the higher level stewardship scheme. The scheme, which provides grant aided funds to landowners, will enable the Crowborough Golf Club to step up the process of restoring the Common to its former heathland nature. The grant funding will be given over a period of ten years beginning in 2014. Natural England recognises that the delicate nature of heathland should be maintained so the biological diversity of the Common is protected for the benefit of all. The restoration work will be undertaken by the green staff of the Club together with contractors and volunteers.

It is very much hoped that the restoration of the heathland, coupled with the clear identification of the areas utilised solely for golf, will enable all users to mutually enjoy the benefits of the common.

home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I.

A few miles from Ashdown Forest, situated in the heart of idyllic countryside, this romantic castle is famous for being the childhood

20 • April 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

The original medieval castle with its gatehouse and walled bailey was built in 1270, with the Tudor dwelling added within its walls by the powerful Bullen (Boleyn) family who lived at Hever during the 15th and 16th centuries. Its splendid panelled rooms contain fine furniture, tapestries, an important collection of Tudor portraits and artefacts including two Books of Hours signed and inscribed by Anne Boleyn. In 1903, the Estate was bought by

the American multi-millionaire, William Waldorf Astor, who invested an immense amount of time, money and imagination restoring the castle and grounds. He inherited the benefits of the fortune of his great grandfather and succeeding generations of the Astor family. The Astor family’s story is a ‘rags to riches’ one, just like that of the Bullens in Tudor times. In 1783, a butcher’s boy called Johann Jakob Astor emigrated from the small German town of Waldorf to America. He took up fur-trading in the north-east, buying his furs from the Indian trappers. became increasingly successful until by the end of the 18th century he owned a fleet of 12 merchant vessels which carried his furs to Europe and the Far East and returned with manufactured goods and tea which he sold in America. When he died in 1848, he was the richest man in America. William Waldorf Astor inherited the original fortune and the continuing success in business and investment of the next two generations. He also developed a love for Europe, particularly when he was appointed American Ambassador to Italy between 1882 and 1885. He grew increasingly disenchanted with his native land, announcing publicly that ‘America was no longer a fit place for a gentleman to live.’ Astor left America for England in 1890 with a reputed 100 million dollars – the equivalent of at least ten time that amount today. He totally absorbed himself in his adopted country, buying Cliveden in Buckinghamshire in 1893 and, ten years later, Hever Castle and 640 acres of land from the Meade Waldo family. Between 1903 and 1908, with his architect, F.L. Pearson, Astor set about building a complete 10022 • April 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

room wing in the style of a Tudor village attached to the castle to provide sumptuous rooms for family and guests. Cellars were built underneath what is today known as the Astor Wing and enormous boilers installed to provide hot water and central heating. Miles of cables and pipes running through the cellars provided power, light, heat and water to the entire complex. Astor also had a fire-fighting system, a power station and a private water supply. The award-winning gardens were laid out by Joseph Cheal and Son between 1904–1908, turning marshland into the spectacular gardens visitors see today. One of the most magnificent areas of the gardens is the Italian Garden which was designed to display Astor’s unique collection of Greek and Roman statuary, collected while he was living in Italy. Over 1,000 men worked on the grand design with around 800 men taking two years to dig out the 38acre lake. In just four years, the 125 acres of classical and natural landscapes were constructed and planted. Each area has its own style and character, from the magnificent Pompeiian Wall and classical statuary in the Italian Garden to the Tudor Garden and walled Rose Garden containing over 4,000 fragrant roses.

The Best April Fool’s Hoax Ever? The spaghetti tree hoax was a three-minute report broadcast on April Fools’ Day 1957 by BBC’s Panorama, supposedly showing a family in the South of Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family “spaghetti tree”. Back in the 50’s, spaghetti was littleknown in the UK, so many would have been unaware of what spaghetti consisted of. Charles de Jaeger, the cameraman, apparently dreamed up the story after remembering how teachers at his Austrian school teased classmates for being so stupid that if they were told that spaghetti grew on trees, they would believe it. The programme showed a Swiss family gathering a bumper spaghetti harvest after a mild winter and “virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil”. Footage of a traditional “Harvest Festival” was aired along with a discussion of the breeding necessary to develop a strain to produce the perfect length. Some scenes were filmed in Hertfordshire, others at a hotel in Switzerland. Broadcaster Richard Dimbleby’s voice lent to its authenticity. Only seven million homes in Britain had television 24 • April 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

sets at the time. An estimated eight million people watched the programme. Hundreds phoned in to question the authenticity of the story or ask for more information about spaghetti cultivation and how to grow their own spaghetti trees! The BBC purportedly told them to “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best”. Decades later CNN would call the broadcast “the biggest hoax that any reputable news establishment ever pulled.”

The Countdown has Started.... Last June we published an article about local resident Daryl Farmer’s Solo rowing race across the pacific which will start from Monterey Bay, California and finish in Hawaii. In this time he will cover approximately 2400 miles of open ocean by the most direct route - although wind and currents may increase that distance considerably. The motivation and goal for the row is conservation of our oceans through supporting the charity, Earthrace and also supporting the Peter Andre Foundation for cancer research. Daryl has been getting lots of local support recently, starting with Peter Andre’s involvement, including filming with him at Weirwood reservoir to raise awareness - see thepeterandrechannel. com. Forest Row Primary school held a non-uniform day in exchange for each pupil donating chocolate bars with upbeat messages written on them (to keep him going!). Plus in late March there was a send off auction at the Felbridge Hotel - one of his sponsors.

Please See: www.rowing4reefs.co.uk for more information and to donate.

Daryl leaves for the States on May 17th and the race will start June 7th. This solo row still needs support by way of sponsorship, donations, awareness spreading... whichever way possible.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Gardening in April Spectacular Sunshine has encouraged us all into the garden, in some instances to survey the damage from the wet and windy winter - very often this damage presents new and exciting opportunities to make changes and introduce new plantings to the garden – and now is a very good time. It is very tempting with the warmer weather to want to plant out our patios and fill the borders with tender plants – restrain yourself if you can, Jack Frost may still pay an unwelcome visit! If you can’t resist then keep an eye on the forecast and when it is likely to frost cover your tender plants with a light horticultural fleece. Borders – If you haven’t already done so tidy the borders up removing weeds. Apply a good general fertiliser to give all the plants a nourishing feed to help them get going. Hedges – Now is the time to fill any gaps in the hedge. Why not try something new, add colour with evergreens such as Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ or try a native hedgerow with Fagus sylvatica (Beech) Carpinus betula (Hornbeam), Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn), all brilliant to encourage the wildlife into the garden. Shrubs and Trees and Roses – It is still a good time to plant these out. Ensure you have a large hole filled with well rotted compost, add some fertiliser and

28 • April 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

water the new plant in. If conditions are dry keep the plant well watered for a few weeks until it is established. Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas – All these thrive on the acid clay in this part of Sussex and give fantastic displays of colour. They too benefit from a feed, sequestered iron granules or a liquid feed which after flowering you can water over the leaves to keep them nice and glossy green throughout the summer. Fruit and Vegetables – All these should have had a good mulch in March – if not then do it now. If planting out new fruit bushes, mulch them well and keep watered. You can sow your vegetable seeds, give them a head start in the greenhouse and get herbs under way as well. Lawns – Feed the lawn now for a good colour and strong growth. Rake out moss, remove weeds and sow seed onto any bare patches. A high cut every two weeks will suffice until next month. Remember to enjoy your garden, however large or small, savour the scents of blossoms and freshly cut grass, be inspired with the colours… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery

The Military on Ashdown Forest and during World War I

For the last 3 centuries the Ashdown Forest has had several strong connections to the military. Starting in the summer of 1793 when 7000 men under the command of the Duke of Richmond made a tented camp between Duddleswell and Nutley. Then still 100 years later, in 1893 tented camps were made at Forest Row, Crowborough, and on the forest between Nutley and Maresfield. These troops were reviewed by the Duke of Cambridge, the Commander in Chief of the British Army. Marquees had to be erected for refreshments and welfare comforts at both Forest Row and Crowborough. In 1906 about 2000 men from the 1st Cinque Ports Rifle Corps held their annual training camp on St. John’s Common, and in 1910 The Sussex and Kent Volunteer Brigade and the Royal Engineers, London camped there.

Forest Row YMCA Hut in the camp.

From the 17 May until 2 July 1912 the No. 1 Signal Company of the Royal Engineers with 650 men and 800 horses camped at Chelwood Gate for training, and the Royal Engineers from Woolwich with 200 men and 50 horses camped at Pippingford in the summer of 1914. Shortly before the First World War, the Royal Sussex Regiment, under the command of His Grace the Duke of Norfolk, trained on the forest during July of 1911.

In 1906 about 2000 men from the 1st Cinque Ports Rifle Corps held their annual training camp on St. John’s Common, and in 1910 The Sussex and Kent Volunteer Brigade and the Royal Engineers, London camped there.

The Defence of the Realm Act of 1914 specified that land could be used for military training and so at that time camps were set up on Camp Hill, St. John’s Common, King’s Standing and in Kidbrooke Park. Kidbrooke Park in Forest Row was home to many yeomanry regiments.

Crowborough YMCA Hut.

At the beginning of the first world war, a hutted camp was begun on the ladies golf course at Forest Row which when completed housed the greatest numbers of troops. Huts had been sited on the boggy slopes around Ashdown Place but part of the camp had to be abandoned in early 1915 due to the mud; access for heavy traffic was restricted. The natural springs were used for drinking water but no connections had been made to the public sewer. By the end of 1915 wooden latrines had been erected in front of Ashdown Place, which had water laid on and were connected to the sewer.

Compared to larger building companies in the area where your money gets sucked by admin costs and the workforce time and again are poorly skilled, it pays to work on a one to one basis with Lewis. His quotes are sensible; I highly recommend him.” Simon W. Desmond, Newick, East Sussex 2013

The unveiling of the monument on the golf course.

Many complaints were sent to the War Department regarding the damage done to the ladies golf course, and the building of bridges across the rivers and bogs from Crowborough Camp to Camp Hill. Damage to fir trees had occurred as a result of the soldiers cutting deep rings in the bark so that they could tether their horses. Rubbish was buried in shallow trenches and streams began to get polluted. By 17 July 1915 the majority of the troops had left the camp at Forest Row for France. th

Maresfield Park Estate had been confiscated from the owner, Count Munster in 1915 and in October 1916 a Cavalry Machine Gun Corps Training Centre was formed there. By 1916 the Officer Training Canadian Military School was established at Crowborough Camp, quickly followed by the Canadian Trench Warfare School. A Canadian Army Post Office was at the camp until both schools moved to Bexhill in 1917. Crowborough was also home to the Joint Royal Horse Artillery and the Royal Field Artillery, and the Signalling Training School. During 1917 many regiments passed through these camps on their way to the front. Food was in short supply during the war so land was dug to provide vegetables for the troops. Large plots were dug on the golf course, and a further 100 acres from Wych Cross Corner to Chelwood Gate, and from Wych Cross towards Plaw Hatch. Heather and bracken was collected by the military for horse bedding. ‘The Limes’ in Crowborough was a convalescent home for Canadian Officers. In Forest Row ‘Ashdown Park’ was set up as a hospital, ‘Chapelwood Manor’ was a convalescent home, and ‘Cherry Orchard’ was used as a hospital with a large wooden hut in the garden as an annexe. YMCA huts had been erected on the golf course and entertainment was provided. The local youth of the area were also allowed to enjoy the facilities. Crowborough and Uckfield transported troops and supplies to the camps and they carried the troops to the ports for their embarkation to France. Major Gilbert George Reginald Sackville, 8th. Earl De La Warr was born on 22 March 1869, a member of the ever-prevailing Sackville family. He was the second but only surviving son of Reginald Sackville 7th Earl De La Warr and therefore heir to the Sackville estate. His elder brother, Lord Cantelupe, died unmarried in 1890 and his father died in 1896. Made Deputy Lieutenant of Sussex in 1891, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 2nd Cinque Ports of the Royal Artillery. That year he also married the Honorable Muriel Agnes Brassey. They had one son and two daughters. He resigned his commission as a captain, in 1896 but in 1900 was re-appointed captain in the 2nd. Cinque Ports Division and fought in the Second Boer War. He was then promoted to major in 1901, but resigned this commission in 1902. Unusually for that day and age, in 1902 Lord and Lady De La Warr were divorced. Lord De La Warr then married Hilda Mary Clavering Tredcroft, daughter of Colonel Charles Lennox Tedcroft, in 1903. There were no children from this marriage. In 1903 and 1904 he became Mayor of Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, a town mainly owned by his omnipotent (in

Sussex at least) family. He relinquished his army commission in November 1914 but fought in the war as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He was in command of HMML (His Majesty’s Motor Launch) California when he was killed on 16 December 1915. He is buried in Messina Town Cemetery, Italy. Buckhurst Park, the family home. Private Scott of Fairwarp, war hero.

began on Easter Monday 1917, when the British Army launched an attack on German positions described by the contemporary illustrated war record as ‘enormously strong’. The attack was in every way successful, for not only was the enemy driven from the much coveted ridge by heroic Canadian troops, but over 9000 prisoners were taken in the course of the day and over 40 guns were captured. The advance continued and on April 11th, the number of prisoners taken was 11,000, including 250 officers and over 100 guns.

Private Percy Scott, 8368, 7th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment was awarded the Military Medal for gallant conduct during operations east of Arras, April 9/12, 1917.

The regiment took part in an attack south of the Scarpe and made good progress with few casualties, following up with further attacks in the Monchy-lePreux area, east of Arras; this was presumably where Percy won his medal. He continued to the end of the war and was never wounded.

Percy William the son of Aaron and Emily Scott was born in 1896, in a “sod hut”, a dwelling on an Ashdown Forest enclosure made from a hole dug into an earth bank and covered with poles, brushwood and turf, long since replaced by a brick building.

After the war he married Miss Julie Ridley and they had a daughter, Ella and a son, Percy. The family lived at Spring Cottage, Dodds Bottom, Nutley, and Percy followed the peaceful occupation of growing plants and grafting fruit trees and roses, an art that he had learned from his father.

Aaron Scott

His father Aaron Scott was one of the last of the forest turf cutters. In the 1911 census Percy, aged 15 was working as a labourer on a nursery. He had two brothers, Aaron and Alfred, and four sisters, Florence, Maud, Hetty and Margery. Their address was Fairwarp.

The Military Medal award for operations east of Arras referred to the battle of Vimy Ridge. The battle
