Testimonial: “I just wanted to say thank you both so much for doing such a brilliant job—and for coming out so quickly to do it. I still can’t believe it’s done—I am eternally grateful and if anyone else needs some work done you guys will be at the top of the list. Fantastic—thank you again.” Louize Mason-Styrron “We have employed Allzones Roofing over the past 5 years, in this time they have re-tiled a large house built in 1916 including dormers and gables. Re-tiled a cottage roof using new tiles on one side and re using the old tiles on the other side. Removed felt from a roof on a large studio and replaced with fibre cement based tiles. Recently re-tiled a bungalow with shingle tiles (wood). All the work has been carried out with efficiency and excellent workmanship throughout. I would recommend this company.” Peredur Art Centre

ART IN THE HEART OF KENT! It is a surprising fact that there are people who have not even heard of South East Open Studios! Yet for two weeks every June, between two and three hundred artists and craft makers open their doors, welcoming you behind the scenes and into their studios. This is a massive cultural event and one which is repeated in many areas across the South of England, in particular. It costs the visitor nothing more than the petrol to visit and enjoy a huge array of art and craft of every kind: a celebration, by artists and public alike, of the joy and beauty that our culture can produce. There are amazing displays of paintings, ceramics, jewellery, textiles and sculpture. You don’t have to buy anything - but you will surely be tempted! Prices are very reasonable and you can certainly pay the same for a unique piece as you would for something from IKEA that is produced in its millions.

you can follow a trail to see other studios nearby, like the Red House at Hever, where you can see pottery, etching and delicious colourful stitched pieces or the paintings of Helen McKenna-Menges at Chiddingstone.

This June the dates are Friday 3rd to Sunday 19th. To find studios near you, pick up a catalogue from your local library or go to www.seos-art.org to read it on line.

For more details see www.seos-art.org or email Cathy at cathy.bird1@btopenworld.com

Women’s Cricket comes to historic Sheffield Park The Earl of Sheffield and the celebrated cricket pitch at Sheffield Park and Garden is indeliably embedded in the history of cricket in this country and indeed abroad. This summer will be another first for Sheffield Park when it becomes the venue for a county championship match between the Sussex and Surrey Women’s teams on Sunday 12th June. “It is always a fiercely contested match between the two strong counties and it is great that we have the opportunity to play at an amazing setting such as Sheffield Park”, said Charlotte Burton, director of Sussex Women’s Cricket, “The players all enjoy being at a new venue and with the history and the views at Sheffield Park, it will make the day even more memorable.” Sheffield Park itself has a cricketing history going back to 1845 when a 13 year old Viscount Pevensey opened the batting for the home team; he went on to become the third Earl of Sheffield when he inherited the vast estate. The complete renovation of the grounds he ordered, led to it becoming a prestigious venue for

international matches including a match in 1896 attended by the Prince of Wales and 25,000 spectators.

be taking pre-orders for picnics which will be delivered to the pitch to be enjoyed whilst taking in the game.

Indeed, in 1891-92 Sheffield even went to Australia as the promoter of the English team (led by the world famous WG Grace) on a tour which included three tests played in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. At the conclusion, Sheffield donated £150 to the New South Wales Cricket Association to fund a trophy for an annual tournament of intercolonial cricket in Australia. This became known as the Sheffield Shield, the first-class, domestic cricket tornament which, as we know, continues to this day.

Finally we can say that in Sussex we are proud that our county cricket club has a strong history of supporting women’s cricket. The Sussex Women’s team was formed in 1927 and has won the county championship six times in the last 15 years. Players include Sarah Taylor, Georgia Elwiss and Danni Wyatt, who all play for England and with England all-rounder Natalie Sciver on the Surrey team, it promises to be a high-quality game.

Following his death, sadly the cricket ground fell out of use through much of the twentieth century. However, it was beautifully restored by the National Trust with the help of the Armadillos Cricket Club, the MCC and Sussex County Cricket Club. The ground is now home to the Armadillos, and matches are played most weekends throughout the summer. Any visitors to Sheffield Park and Garden on the 12th June, are welcome to wander up to the cricket pitch to enjoy the match. The National Trust tearoom will

The Sussex County Cricket Club has also been running the ‘Chance to Shine’ programme, coaching girls at primary and secondary level and running tournaments for schools throughout the county. With such an important match being played on this historic pitch, it promises to be a great day for cricket fans. Good luck to the Sussex ladies! Sheffield Park and Garden is open 10am to 5pm every day. For further information visit www.nationaltrust.org. uk/sheffieldpark.

Perfect for “Strawberry Month” Delicious desert for a summer meal and surprisingly easy to make

Strawberries and Madeira cake with Dark Chocolate Cremeux By Andrew Wilson, Exec Head Chef at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

Madeira cake

Method

Ingredients

Using the same method as for the ice cream, warm the milk and cream together and whisk the egg yolks and sugar in a separate bowl.

175g unsalted butter 175g caster sugar 3 medium eggs 250g self-raising flour 3 tbsp milk Zest of 1 lemon

Pour the milk and cream over the eggs and sugar and whisk to combine. Transfer the mixture back into the saucepan, then warm slowly to 86°C – you’ll need a sugar thermometer for this. Let the mixture cool to 50°C then add the melted chocolate.

Method Beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Slowly add the eggs one at a time, beating until well mixed. Sieve and fold in the flour, followed by the lemon zest and milk and combine well. Pour into a greased and lined 8” round baking tin and bake at 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 4 for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden.

Strawberry ice cream: Ingredients 500g strawberry puree 500ml whole milk 210ml double cream 12 egg yolks 100g caster sugar Method Warm the milk and cream in a medium sized saucepan the in a separate bowl whisk together the egg yolks and caster sugar.

Whisk the mixture together then leave to cool. Pour the milk and cream over the eggs and sugar and whisk to combine. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and heat over a low temperature, stirring continuously until a thick custard is formed. Remove from the heat, pass through a fine sieve and leave to cool. When the custard is cold, add the strawberry puree and transfer into an ice cream machine to churn, according to your machine’s settings.

To serve the dish, cut the madeira cake into cubes and arrange on a plate with a scoop of the ice cream, piped or spooned dots of the chocolate cremeux and diced, perfectly sweet, fresh British strawberries. If you want to get creative, you can make a chocolate bowl by melting white chocolate to coat the inside of a half-sphere shaped mould, which after it’s set can hold the strawberries, madeira cake and chocolate cremeux.

Meringue: Ingredients HOTEL AND COUNTRY CLUB

250ml whipping cream 250ml whole milk 100g egg yolks (approximately 5 eggs) 50g sugar 250g 70% dark chocolate, melted

Winnie the Pooh Rules Finding Winnie is the astounding real-life story of the bear “Winnie”. Before there was Winnie-thePooh, there was a real bear named Winnie and in 1914, Harry Colebourn, a vet on his way to tend horses in World War I, followed his heart and rescued this baby bear. He named her Winnie, and he took her to war. Harry Colebourn’s real-life greatgranddaughter tells the true story of a remarkable friendship and an even more remarkable journey - from the fields of Canada to an army base in England. And finally to London Zoo, where Winnie made another new friend, a boy named Christopher Robin. Written by Harry Colebourn’s great-grandaughter Lindsay Mattick, this is a beautiful and touching book with original documents. It was released at the end of last year and has recently won the 2016 Caldecott Medal which annually recognises the most distinguished American picture book for children. So we are very lucky to be able to bring you a Q&A with author Lindsay Mattick about her book: Your book, Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear, delves into the real story behind the lovable character that many children and adults alike know as Winnie-the-Pooh. Pooh Bears Local Hunt for Treasure Children and families are invited to take photographs of their pooh bears in and around the village and post them on their social media accounts using the hastag: poohbeargoeshunting. There will be a prize for the best photo, donated by Pooh Corner!

You may well know that Winnie the Pooh, like the Queen, is 90 years old this year and in celebration of this special event, the PTA of St Mary’s School Hartfield are embracing this most famous of bears to host the first ever: Bring Along a Pooh Bear treasure hunt on the 25th June, 11am – 1pm. “Its not every year you get to celebrate 90 years old” said Mimi from the PTA. “Pooh Bear is very much a part of local life; there is Pooh Corner at the end

of the high street which sells ‘poohpernaila’ which is also home to the delightful Piglet’s tearoom and gardens and Pooh Bridge of course”. The whole community has been involved with its organization: the treasure hunt has been put together by Year 5 children and for the younger ones there will be a scavenger hunt. Locals will be helping out on the day providing tea, coffee, biscuits, and later in the afternoon a spot of pimms.

And what better way to finish the day then back at the village croft for a pooh bear picnic. The refreshments and licensed bar will be based in the pavilion, and their will also be face-painting, balloons and perhaps even a visit from the bear himself... We can’t think of a better way to enjoy the weekend. So if you’re a fan of A.A. Milne’s books, enjoy a country walk, or simply need to take the kids off somewhere new, Bring Along a Pooh Bear is the perfect day out. For more questions please contact:mimivanpraagh@ gmail.com or call 07540090242. Cost: £3 for the Treasure Hunt and £1 for the Toddler Scavenger Hunt.

Welcome LEO the Long-Eared Owl Chick Leo hatched out a few weeks ago and is the first long-eared owl bred at local British Wildlife Centre (A22, nr Lingfield). Keeper Meg was chosen to be his mum and she’s been hand-rearing him since. They’re now inseparable as he took to Meg immediately; he’s being very brave and has done a wonderful job getting acclimatised to staff and visitors alike and even large groups of excited school children! The perfect candidate to inspire and educate people about this beautiful but secretive owl species, he’s taking it all in his stride and will even be considered for the owl flying display team. Wishing Leo all the best on his journey. www.britishwildlifecentre.co.uk

June Reminders for your Garden and geraniums in particular should be deadheaded regularly. If you want your pots and baskets to be useful rather than just pretty (or you may have limited space) then consider planting them up with herbs, tomatoes and/or strawberries. There are plenty of varieties available for this purpose. Spring flowering shrubs should all be trimmed back or pruned by the early part of the month. If you leave this too late you are cutting away the stems on which the new buds are forming in readiness for the following spring. Camellias and Rhododendrons should have their dead flower heads carefully removed. You should be giving them a liquid feed every two weeks (one rich in iron) to keep them green and healthy and encourage good bud growth ready for the following spring.

June is always a very busy month in the garden but the long days and light evenings mean we have so much more time to spend outside. Gardening can be an excellent ‘de-stresser’ so that even after a busy day at work, a few hours pottering in your garden can help you feel relaxed and invigorated. Plus some jobs such as watering are best done in the slightly cooler evening temperatures.

So here’s to a flaming June – enjoy your garden… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery

Regularly deadhead throughout the border to keep it looking fresh and pull out weeds as you see them. You may have some gaps and these can be filled with summer bedding or plant some canna lilies – these are striking plants with large, almost architectural leaves and an abundance of hot summer colour flowers. They are not hardy plants so the best action is to lift them in the autumn, overwinter them in the greenhouse or shed and then bring them on again the following spring. Roses are the stars of the show this month and a little attention will pay dividends in the blooms display. Regular deadheading will encourage new buds – cut back to the next outward facing shoot, this keeps a nice open shrub. If you are training roses up a wall or pergola then you need to tie in new shoots and prune out unwanted ones regularly to achieve your desired effect. Tubs, hanging baskets, patio pots will all start to grow quickly and look fabulous this month. A regular feed will encourage plenty of flowers and don’t forget to keep on top of the watering. Petunias

Put your Hands Up! to volunteer for Chestnut Tree Chestnut Tree is the children’s hospice service for East Sussex. Each year we look after hundreds of local children with life-shortening conditions and their families. Our care really is invaluable to the families we look after and we make no charge for this care. Without volunteers, we simply would not be able to continue offering our care services, and we would like to thank each and every one of our volunteers who give us the gift of their time. But of course, we are always looking for more people who can help us. Here in East Sussex there are many opportunities to volunteer – with fundraising activities, in the charity’s Eastbourne office, at one of our events, or in one of our retail shops - there is something to suit everybody.

Help us care for the children and families in East Sussex who need us, giving them the chance to live life to the full – for as much time as they have together.

If you feel you can spare just a bit of your time we ask you to please put your Hands Up! and contact us on 01323 725095 or email handsup@chestnuttree-house.org.uk.

Handy Cleaning Tips 2. Clean your dishwasher: Place 2 cups of vinegar on the top rack and run through a cycle with nothing else.

Cleaning Tips 1. Switch to Microfibre: If you haven’t already you can save yourself alot of elbow grease and less chemicals by using these handy cloths.

3. Want to get rid of bad smells in the bathroom? My friend swears by lighting a match in the bathroom, you might need to do this a couple of times but it works like magic... phew! (match safety applies :) ) 4. Want to rid the kitchen of cooking smells after a meal? Put a small saucepan on the hob with a cup or two of water. Add a slice of lemon with a dash of vanilla; or a slice of orange with a teaspoon of cinnamon/nutmeg/ cloves (all or one); or lime and a piece of ginger. Let the mixture boil for a while to leave your kitchen with a lovely smell, but be sure the pan doesn’t run dry! 5. clean the toilet bowl Pour a cupful of bicarb of soda down the sides of your toilet basin, leave it for an hour. Then pour vinegar down the sides and flush. Voila!

A Perfect Spring/Summer Walk: Gravetye Circular This walk is brought to you courtesy of a new tourism initiative which has cemented the Kingcote Valley as being a tourist destination: 2000 acres of beautiful countryside nestled in a valley just north of the Ashdown Forest, centred around the stunning scenery of Weir Wood Reservoir. Part of the High Weald Landscape Trail; enjoy historic houses, lakes, vineyards, enchanting woodland and streams. Explore William Robinson land and take in the views of Gravetye Manor and Kingscote Estate. Victorian English garden author William Robinson previously owned 1000 acres of Kingscote Valley land.

Gravetye Manor was built in 1598 and following William Robinson’s ownership, the gardens are of historical importance. The unique one and a half acre elliptical kitchen garden with 12ft sandstone walls is one of the largest in England.

Visit Kingscote Estate vineyards, award-winning wines in shop and fishing lakes. 15 acres of vines were planted between 2010 and 2013. View the 15th century barn Tithe Barn and 14th century grade II listed medieval hall house (vineyard tours and wine tasting can be pre-booked). Refuel: Gravetye Manor (no dogs allowed) or drive to West Hoathly for The Cat Inn (dogs welcome in bar) and The Fox (dog friendly). Distance: 6km (3.7 miles) with shorter 5km option. Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours. Terrain: includes steep paths. Dog friendly: off lead except for when walking on lanes. Stiles near Birch Farm not suitable for large dogs. OS Explorer Map: 135. Car park: Forestry Commission Vowels Lane (near the lane to Gravetye Manor), nr E. Grinstead. 1. From the car park enter the main footpath, immediately head right, soon after at a path crossroads turn right and then turn left onto the stone path. Take the path off right and then turn left.

Saving Horses for 50 years poor condition and untrusting of human contact. With the help of staff and professionals i.e. vet, dentist, farrier, trust is slowly re-established. It is a rewarding to see the horses grow healthy and start responding to human contact again and enjoy being reintegrated with other equines. Sometimes people take on an animal with all good intentions but without any understanding of the costs or commitment involved. A Shetland pony came to them in the back of its owner’s car when having a pet in the garden became too much for her...

Sussex Horse Rescue came into existence in 1964 dedicated to providing sanctuary for equines that have suffered neglect, cruelty or are simply unwanted. Initially the rescue centre was set up using borrowed grazing but it outgrew this so to raise funds for a new place, founder Pauline Grant sold her home and the centre moved to Heron Farm in 1988. Later in 1994 the trust moved to its current premises to accommodate the ever increasing equine family – ideal in acreage, some 162 acres, it was run down so a considerable amount of work and money was needed to create a safe, comfortable environment for all the animals in their care. They take in equines who have suffered neglect and cruelty and come to them sometimes in very

The trust will be open every Sunday until 4th of September, 11 am – 4 pm. This is an opportunity for you to visit and see some of the rescued equines, enjoy a cuppa in the tearoom or a browse around their barn shop. The 10th September is Gala Closing Day (more details in later publications). Thank you for any support you can give. Address: Hempstead Farm, Hempstead Ln, Uckfield TN22 3DL, Call: 01825 762010.

Receiving animals into sanctuary is not always an easy task – often as a result of a phone call from a concerned person – sometimes they cannot remove it immediately and have to arrange for constant monitoring whilst they follow the correct processes, etc. Sometimes they are asked by the police to pick up an animal that is loose on the road; often the animal is reclaimed by the owner a few days after with no recompense for their expenses. Unfortunately the need for this kind of sanctuary continues to grow and there are very few sanctuaries around. Just maintaining it alone comes with substantial costs: feed, bedding, vet, farrier, dentist, staffing, building maintenance, utilities, etc. They rely solely on the generosity of their supporters (they are not entitled to lottery or similar grants). They are currently trying to find funds to rebuild their stable block, which is over 20 years old.

All for our PAPAs Fathers Day: another American gift to the world which was disseminated across the world much as Mothers Day has. The first American president to support the concept was president Calvin Coolidge, who did so in 1924; but it wasn’t until in the year 1966 that president Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation that resulted in the declaration of the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. And of course the international community has fully embraced this day and given it our own quirks. Funnily enough though, the date of the day is pretty much the same across the boards which makes June the month for fathers the world over.

The first inklings of such a day occurred, most likely, as the result of the success of Mothers Day which had been established by Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia. Just 15 miles from there, in Fairmont, West Virginia, Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the loss of her father when, on December 1907, the nearby Monongah Mining Disaster occurred killing 361 men (250 of them fathers). Clayton suggested to her pastor that all those fathers should be honoured in a ceremony; so on the 5th 1908 the first observance of a “Father’s Day” was held. The establishment of an actual Father’s Day never really got off the ground however (there was no internet and nothing went ‘viral’ in 5 minutes as it does now!).

Did you know that traditionally fathers should be given the gift of white or red rose as the rose is the official flower for Father’s Day? And wearing a red rose signifies a living father, while a white one represents a deceased father.

Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd was the lady who really gave it life, to make fathers day materialise as we know it today. She lived in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA. Her own father was a civil war vet, William Jackson Smart, who single-handedly raised his six children. Clearly he must have done a fabulous job as a father because, after hearing the sermons on Mothers Day services over the years, Sonora decided her father and all fathers deserved to be honoured too. June 19, 1910 was chosen as the day and June has been associated with Fathers Day in almost every country across the world since.

The most popular Father’s Day present is apparently a tie but I rather think they might just prefer to have complete and unconditional control of the remote control for once and copious cups of tea/coffee/beer on hand and generally be waited on like kings....time to plan.

Sudoku

© Kevin Stone [www.brainbashers.com]

In the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she left to study art, the day faded into uncertain obscurity, even in her home town of Spokane. When she returned in the 1930s and started promoting the celebration again, she was able raise awareness at a national level. This was also because as soon as commercialism sniffed a winner with Fathers Day, it really took off - nothing like some good ol’ promotion to keep the wheels turning; the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes, and any traditional present to fathers all got on board. Unlike Mother’s Day, Father’s Day promotion was originally met with laughter. It was the target of much satire, parody and derision with a local newspaper complaining that it would lead to mindless promotions such as “National Clean Your Desk Day”.
