Pioneering pilot, an extraordinary life the passing of a national treasure.
Captain Eric Melrose ‘Winkle’ Brown CBE, DSC, AFC, Hon FRAeS, RN January, 21st 1919 – February, 21st 2016 eight and his father, a pilot in the First World War took him up in a bi-plane. In an interview he gave to the BBC in 2014, Brown said of his experience flying with his father in the bi-plane: “There was no second seat, but I sat on his lap and he let me handle the stick. It was exhilarating. You saw the Earth from a completely different standpoint.”
Pioneering and extraordinary can often be over-used in modern discourse particularly when describing achievements of someone who has just passedaway but with the death in February of Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown the descriptions are more than just apt, they embody his achievements. Brown lived-out his final years in Copthorne, near East Grinstead, where he wrote various books
about his experiences as a Royal Navy officer and as a test pilot. During his time as a test pilot he flew more than 480 different types of aircraft, a figure greater than anyone else in history. Born in Leith, Scotland in 1919 and educated at Edinburgh’s Royal High School, before studying at the University of Edinburgh, where he learnt to fly. His interest in flying is said to have come about when he was
On 3 December 1945, Brown became the first pilot to land on and take off (pictured) from an aircraft carrier (HMS Ocean) in a jet aircraft.
During his time in the Royal Navy he would go on to fly almost every category of RAF aircraft: glider, fighter, bomber, airliner, amphibian, flying boat, and helicopter. During the Second World War he also flew several captured German aircraft, including new jet and rocket planes. Brown received the affectionate nickname ‘Winkle’ from his Royal Navy colleagues due to his height of 5ft 7in. It was his short stature that Brown would credit to his survival ability – due to his size,

he said: he had the ability to “curl himself-up in the cockpit.” He remains a hero among military pilots who today fly far more safely thanks to the techniques and technologies he helped to test often endangering himself and therefore his ability to curl-up in the cockpit would prove to be invaluable in moments of danger. In an extraordinary life and career, he remains the mostdecorated pilot in the history of the Royal Navy but his exploits are landmark events of the 20th century – he was at the 1936 Berlin Olympic games, he interrogated Hermann Goering and he helped liberate Bergen Belsen concentration camp. In 1936, he attended the Olympics and in 1939 when war broke out he was teaching in Germany. The SS escorted him to the Swiss border and let him keep his MG car before he made his way back to Britain where he volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm, the airborne branch of the Royal Navy. Though never a formally qualified test pilot, Brown’s flying ability was so outstanding that he

piloting aircraft during hazardous trials in wartime. Between 1944 and 1950, he continued his role of experimental test flying.
Brown held the world record for the most aircraft carrier deck take-offs and landings performed, both of which total more than 2,000 respectively and achieved several ‘firsts’ in naval aviation, including the first landings on an aircraft carrier of a twin-engined aircraft. By the end of 1943 he had already chalked-up some 1,500 deck landings on 22 ships and in 1944 he was appointed MBE for his outstanding enterprise and skill in
Performing the first landing of a jet aircraft on a carrier, a de Havilland Sea Vampire on the carrier Ocean in December 1945 Brown, said: “that only pilots of exceptional skill like himself would be able to repeat the operation safely.” During the Korean War Brown was lent to the US Naval Test Centre in Maryland. He introduced to the American’s the new British concepts of angled flight deck. By 1954 he was given command of 804 Naval Air Squadron, flying the Sea Hawk fighter-bomber. In 1957 he returned to Germany to train-up the new German naval air arm to NATO standards before being promoted to captain and time spent serving in the admiralty as deputy director of Naval Air Warfare playing a key role in the development of new carriers.

HMS Audacity - Brown was one of only two survivors after its sinking
Brown said Goering was “quite charismatic in many ways.” He asked Goering how he saw the outcome of the Battle of Britain to which the reply from Goering was in a succinct response – “A draw.”
Fluent in German and with his expertise on aircraft meant Brown interviewed many important figures during the war including Hermann Goering (pictured)
in the ocean.” Adding it was a game of Russian roulette – “We had one incident every nine landings.” The US Navy were said to have given one man the specific job of breaking the record set by Brown – “To his everlasting credit he got up to 1,600 and then had a nervous breakdown” said Brown reminiscing about the competition to his world-record.
He retired from the Royal Navy in 1970, becoming the director general of the British Helicopter Advisory Board and later the president of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1982. Last flying in 1994, he said giving-up flying which had been such an integral part of his life was like “drug withdrawal”. He wrote numerous books of his own about his experiences and provided forewords for other authors on their books on the theme of aviation both before and after his retirement. In 1962, he was ordered to write a short
In 2006 the book was revived and published as Wings on my Sleeve and followed-up on his 2002 book Wings of the Luftwaffe which sold more than 100,000 copies. In March last year, a bronze bust of him was unveiled at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Somerset to celebrate his achievements. Despite his age, Brown continued to make public appearances, including an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2014 and celebrations for his 97th birthday this year when he was joined in London by more than 100 pilots and the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas. Brown, who had been appointed MBE, OBE and CBE, retained a sense of purpose throughout his life with writing and lecturing engagements as well as answering hundreds of letters by hand, spurning computers. He died at East Surrey Hospital on February, 21st 2016 after a short illness.
Fluent in German and with his expertise on aircraft meant he interviewed many important figures during the war including Hermann Goering and the socalled beast of Belsen Irma Grese, Captain Brown described Grese as the “worst person I have ever met.” During Allied interrogation of Nazi military leader Goering,

Slow cooked lamb, leek & lentil bake It takes about 20 minutes to put this casserole together, then you can enjoy the mouthwatering aromas as it slowly cooks. Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 1 hr 25 mins
What to do: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan oven 160°C, gas mark 4.
Ingredients: 1 tsp vegetable oil 350g lamb neck fillet trimmed and sliced 1 large onion sliced 1 leek sliced 2 carrots sliced 100g dried red lentils 50g frozen peas 750ml vegetable or chicken stock 2 tsp tomato puree 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground paprika 1 pinch ground black pepper 400g potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
2. Heat a large flameproof casserole dish on the hob and add the vegetable oil. Add the lamb chunks, letting them sear and brown before turning them over. Cook for 3-4 minutes until browned on all sides. 3. Add the onion, leek, carrots, lentils, peas, stock, tomato puree, cumin and paprika. Season with some pepper and stir well. Bring up to the boil, then remove from the heat. 4. Arrange the sliced potatoes in an overlapping layer to cover the surface of the lamb mixture. Cover and bake for 1 ¼ hours, removing the lid for the final 30 minutes to brown the potatoes. Tip 1: Dried red lentils don’t have to be pre-cooked as they soon become tender. Tip 2: The cumin and paprika add extra flavour and spiciness, though you could leave them out if you prefer.

On the 10th April there is the Classic Bus Running Day in town. Perfect for the little ones! (see our What’s On for full details).
We mums are living in a healthy-food-revolution and there lot’s of great recipes online that have far less refined sugar, lots of ‘good’ fats, etc. Here are just a couple of ideas for this Spring: Make your own lollies, smoothie up some fruit but add in veg too! Avocado and a handful of spinach doesn’t change the sweet flavour of the fruit but is so good for getting down some greens. Place the smoothie combo into ice-lolly maker and freeze. If the kids are concerned about the greenish colour just tell them it’s a ‘hulk lolly’ (for boys) or a ‘magic potion lolly’ (for girls).

Local family feature in charity film Chestnut Tree children’s hospice has recently launched a film featuring a family from Barcombe. The film aims to raise awareness of the charity in East Sussex, and the care that they can provide in children’s own homes. The Lundin family have been cared for by the Sussex-based charity since 2011 when they were seeking respite care for their youngest child. Dad Jason explains “Eva was born 13 weeks early, not breathing, and spent the first 108 days of her life in hospital. She was tiny but she fought hard, she is now almost six years old and is a loving girl with Cerebral Palsy and chronic lung disease. She has come a long way since those early days, but she is still highly dependent on me and her mum for all of her needs. She cannot walk unaided, her weak chest means she is often dependent on oxygen, she is fed by a tube and she cannot speak to us. Of course, she communicates in her own way, and has even learnt a few signs, but caring for her is still
hugely demanding.” The family access a range of services at Chestnut Tree. A nurse visits regularly to take care of Eva whilst Jason and Mel spend some quality time together, and with Eva’s brother George. “It’s wonderful” Jason says, “to start with, the visits from the Chestnut Tree Nurse gave us time to get everyday tasks done, but now we use it as precious time for Mel and I to spend as a couple, which is really invaluable. And during the school holidays we try to use our visits to spend some time with George, doing the kinds of things that aren’t easy with Eva.”
Chestnut Tree cares for 300 children and their families across Sussex and never charges for its care. It costs well over £3.5 million every year to offer these services and less than 7% of its funding comes from central government, meaning it relies heavily on the generosity of the local community. “We are so proud of Eva and George and will treasure this film forever. Please, please tell as many people as you can about it - like, share, tweet, retweet, comment – and help Chestnut Tree reach more children and families like us that need them. Thank you so much!” You can see Eva’s film on www. chestnut-tree-house.org. uk/handsup, by liking Chestnut Tree House on Facebook, or by following @HandsUpToHelp.

This Kitchen company, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you might think. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. April Reminders for your Garden Give some thought to summer bulbs as now is the best time to plant them. The larger varieties are perfect for the border but some of the smaller ones can be great for your patio pots and add variety to the normal summer bedding. Dahlias, Gladioli and Lily all have dwarf options available.
Blue skies and sunshine tempt us all into thinking the good weather is here to stay, but take caution, we’re still susceptible to a few frosts which can do damage to tender young shoots. The mild winter has encouraged a lot of new growth so keep an eye on the forecast and if a frost looks likely then use a fleece to cover any plants you think may be damaged. Now is the time to tidy your borders before the herbaceous perennials get going. Remove old foliage and debris and then mulch and feed with a good general purpose fertiliser. Any patches of bare ground can be fed in preparation for new plantings, much easier when the growth is low and you can get round the plants.
by watering in through a large rose watering can. Repeat the application every six weeks for the best results.
Another consideration for your patio is planting fruits into pots or hanging baskets. Strawberries are perfect for this, they look attractive and make the fruits very accessible. Use John Innes No.3 for the best results. In winter move the pot into the greenhouse to protect it from frosts.
April and September are considered by the experts to be the best time for planting evergreens (although if pot grown they can be planted at any time really). Dig a hole twice the size of the rootball and add a good compost and some Fish, Blood and Bone to encourage root growth, heel in well and ensure you keep it well watered during dry periods until the roots become more established. April is the best time to give your lawn a good feed. Using a lawn dressing can help to control moss and weeds as well as feeding at the same time. You really only need to feed your lawn once a year.
It is a good time to think about pest control, if you want to stay away from pellets then nematodes are a good alternative to keep the slugs and snails at bay. They can be bought on the internet quite easily and applied
Enjoy your garden‌ Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer

Henslowe, who kept a diary which is one of the best sources for details of the Elizabethan theatre, was probably the most important theatre proprietor in London. As such he must have been well aware of Shakepeares’s existence, but because of the extreme rivalry between the two companies, did not give any reference to his importance.
Between their two deaths, occurred the death, in Stratford on Avon, of William Shakespeare, our greatest dramatist, on St George’s Day, April 23rd, the generally accepted date of his William Shakespeare birth as well. Shakespeare’s own will is best remembered for leaving his second best bed to his wife Anne!
Philip Henslowe died in January 1616. He was buried in nearby Southwark Cathedral on the tenth of that month. He left in his will a bequest to forty poor men living in Clink Liberty, a prison near his house. Unfortunately, I cannot trace this will which might have shed light on his property in East Grinstead. His wife, Agnes died the following July and left money to help eighty women also living in the Clink Liberty. His wife’s will is available, but she gives her name as Anne, not Agnes. There is no doubt but that she is the same person. She calls herself the “widdow of Philip Henslowe” and after various small bequests, leaves her entire estate to “my daughter, Joan”. Her son-inlaw, Edward Alleyn is the executor. She, however, does not specify any particular property so again we cannot tell what was owned in East Grinstead.
In this year in which tributes are being paid to mark the 400th anniversary of his death, it is pleasing to know that even in a very oblique fashion, Shakespeare had a passing connection to this area.

A Book of the Sackville-Wests Pepita, her affectionate and yet truth-facing double biography of her grandmother and her mother
Last month the book ‘A House full of Daughters’, by local author Juliet Nicolson, was published. The book takes the reader through seven generations of women which include Juliet’s famous grandmother Vita Sackville-West. For those who may not know, the Sackville (and Sackville-West) family is one of the most well-known and certainly well established aristocratic families in this part of Sussex and once owned much of land about here. Juliet will be speaking at the new Chiddingstone Literary Festival taking place next month and here we have a ‘Q&A’ with her:
What are you hoping to achieve through your book? I hope that some people may read it and recognise patterns in their own family, as I have now learned to do in mine during the process of writing the book. I hope too that it may give some the courage to break any patterns that are destructive and to ask for help when they need it. A HOUSE FULL OF DAUGHTERS by Juliet Nicolson is published in hardback by Chatto & Windus at £16.99, ebook available. You can meet Juliet at the Chiddingstone Castle’s brand new Literary Festival when she reveals the lives of seven generations of women in the SackvilleWest family, who lived (and continue to live) at Knole and Sissinghurst and at Long Barn in Sevenoaks Weald including a very honest account of her own. This event, along with many others including a theatre performance of The Tailor of Gloucester, will be taking place over the May Bank Holiday weekend, 1st-3rd. Tickets include entry into the castle and its exquisite Japanese and Egyptian collections.
You’ve written a book about your grandmother Vita Sackville-West, what is the most striking part of her life and what legacy did she leave? Vita Sackville-West was my grandmother. Her life was so varied and in ways so contradictory that it is difficult to pin down one especially striking point. She was a novelist, a biographer a poet and a journalist and at times excelled in all those different areas of writing. Perhaps the most controversial part of her life was her elopement just after the First World War with another women, abandoning her husband and young children in the process. She eventually returned to her family and lived out a long and happy marriage, despite many more ( if less threatening) love affairs. Her legacy to me is resilience, ambition and independence, while her wider gift to posterity is her amazing garden at Sissinghurst
Tickets are available online: www.chiddingstonecastle.org.uk/literaryfestival , or call 0800 033 7564.
How did the process of writing this book go from conception to reality? Through hard work, travel to places where the 7 generations of daughters had lived and with the enormous encouragement of my publishers, my editor at Chatto Becky Hardie and my family, especially my brother Adam, my husband Charlie and the blessing of my children Clemmie and Flora What is Vita Sackville-West’s most enduring work and why?

The Great Green In 1957 several local people started looking into the feasability of forming a bowls club. Several sites were looked at, but a piece of ground next to the Elephants Head public house in Hook Green was decided upon. The approval of Lord Camden was required, and given, so work started to clear the site of chicken runs, pig styes and various other clutter. Initially a four rink green was constructed, but later on the neighbouring farmer (our patron at the time) offered the club more ground to extend it to a six rink green. The club was officially opened by Lord Camden in 1963. It is interesting to note that the clubs’ connection with His Lordship allows us to be one of a few clubs in the country to be allowed to have a crown on our badge. At the start the clubs present day club house was an old tea hut used by hop pickers before the war. It has obviously been somewhat improved since then and now boasts a fitted kitchen, double glazed windows, running water, electricity and anything else that is needed to keep it up to date. As the club progressed it was eventually offered the chance to purchase the ground from Lord Camden which it duly did. To sum up, we are a small, friendly and private club. We play fixtures during the season of April to September against many local clubs who, over the years, have come to appreciate the friendliness shown in the club plus the excellent teas we lay on! We are in dire need of new playing members as the only alternative is that this 58 year old club will sadly have to close its doors. We will commence our informal “roll up” evenings about the end of April 2016 so anyone interested can be assured of a very warm welcome. All you need initially is a pair of shoes with no heel (trainers?). If you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact me, Dave Huggett (club chairman) on 01892 532908 or dunett@btinternet.com.

The Colours of the Rainbow by Rebekka Maughan and Simone Wellbrock
Open Hands is a locally based (Hadlow Down) charity which works with children and their families living in extreme poverty in Romania. They support marginalised families to escape poverty, encourage inclusion into society and to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Charlie Chaplin once said: “You will never find a rainbow if you are looking down”. Chaplin’s words show us the importance of hope. But what does hope really mean for the poorest of Romania’s society? It is hard to have hope when you live with your children in an over-crowded little shack with a leaking roof, filth and no sanitation. You may never have known a different live. You are so poor that you cannot give your children three meals a day, but are glad when you find food from the local rubbish dump that you can offer your children at night. In the winter with temperatures as low as -25 degrees your uninsulated shack gets freezing. Your shack is so small that not all of you can sleep in the make-shift bed so some of your children
have to sleep on the freezing floor. You are an outsider and live in a slum at the edge of your local town. Because you look so poor people avoid you, in fact some hate you. When your children are sick you are unable to afford the medicine. As a charity we want to motivate families to look up and see that rainbow Chaplin talked about. Giving hope is one of the most important parts of our work. Anne Frank beautifully said: “Where there is hope, there is life. It fills us with fresh courage and makes us strong again.” No matter how hard their lives have been we need them to have the courage to look up and hope for
something better. Where that hope has been lost we want to be that hope. So when we begin working with families we usually ask what gives them hope. The replies are always modest. One family father desperate to break out of poverty replies: ‘I hope that Open Hands will help me to stand on my feet. I hope that one morning I will wake up and I will have responsibility to go to work for my family, then I will have the feeling that now we are someone in this world’. A mother’s reply: ‘I hope that with the help of Open Hands I can fix my house and bring my kids home from the orphanage.’ Another mother, who lives with her four children, said in a tiny concrete room with no flooring or insulation (see picture), responds: ‘I hope that Open Hands can help me to fix the ceiling so that it does not rain inside our room anymore” In the lives of our families there is an obvious pattern of poverty, it’s like this: if there is no work there is no food, if there is no education there is no work, if there is no food there is no health, if there is

to sing the children the English nursery song ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ and accompanied this with finger actions. The children loved this so much that their faces began to light up. Over and over they ask if I can sing the song again - both of them coping my movements and words. I have rarely seen such joy on children’s faces. These children are not used to receive such attention. They need our input now to develop into healthy adults to break the poverty circle.
no health there is no work, every way seems just the same: hopeless. Their stories make a pattern that may have existed for generations but behind every pattern lies an individual, a face, a hope, a life, which is more than a simple pattern of poverty. As a charity we have found that the only real longterm way to break circles or patterns of poverty is education. Our latest project is called: The Rainbow House (in Romanian: Casa Curcubeu) – An Open Hands Learning Centre. Last year Open Hands purchased a run-down, little house. With an outside toilet and a broken, old well for water access, it really was in dire need of refurbishment. We got to work and The Rainbow House is now completely renovated and furnished inside. We chose the name Rainbow House because we want this house to be a sign of hope. We want the colours of the rainbow to brighten children’s lives. It will be an education centre and safe haven for traumatised and neglected children, a warm and healthy learning environment for children between 0-16 years. The Rainbow House will support the educational development of children through structured play, songs, arts and crafts, food, hygiene, story time and help with school work. Our children have so much potential but they need time, love, affection and teaching to develop this. The other week I visited one of our families. I began

Not only were they extremely hard working, conscientious and diligent but also highly-adept in their traditional skills, concerned to provide value for money and committed to achieving a fabulous result.” Sally and David Lamb
Open Hands aims to support 22 children through the new Rainbow House project. There will be three groups: for babies, pre-schoolers and school-aged children. The Rainbow House will open its doors for the nursery aged children this April. However, to offer all three groups of children to participate in the project, we need to raise an extra amount of ÂŁ24,000 a year. This money will be spent on two staff members to run the groups, hot nutritious meals for the children, the running costs of the house, toys and learning materials. In the summer we would also like to build an outdoor play area for the children. If you would like to help finance this project you can make a secure donation on our website: www.openhandscharity.eu or send a cheque to the address below.
We are also currently in need of toys and educational materials for the Rainbow House, which you can order at: www.amazon. co.uk/gp/registry/wishlist.

Handy Cleaning Tips 1. Freshen up the fridge: Clean the shelves and walls with a solution of half water and half vinegar. 2. Brighten coffee cups and teacups: Gently scrub stains with equal parts vinegar and salt (or sodium bicarb).
White Vinegar
3. Eliminate odours. Swab plastic containers with a cloth dampened with vinegar. 4. Kill Germs. Spray full-strength vinegar over the sink and bath. After a minute, wipe clean. 5. Tidy up a toilet. Pour a cup or more of slightly white vinegar into the toilet bowl. Let it sit several hours or overnight. Scrub well with a toilet brush.
A multi-tasking cleaner at half (or less) of the price and best of all, no dodgy chemicals. Sure to brighten up any kitchen:
6. Get rid of lime buildup. Make up a paste of 1 teaspoon vinegar and 2 tablespoons salt (or sodium bicarb). Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth.
