Flat roofing
Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

The not so humble Daffodil
Although not the most spectacular of flower-world, daffodils yet hold a special place in our hearts & minds. Perhaps only those in the North of the Northern Hemisphere, who must grit their teeth and live through the cold months of Autumn/Winter, truly appreciate the symbolic joy that the first daffodil blooms offer. Not only do they give the first cemented welcome of Spring, they repeat the message everywhere by their colourful and sudden omnipresence. This sentiment was firmly cemented in the English psyche by William Wordsworth with his famous poem: ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze’. Daffodil’s official Latin name is ‘Narcissus’. By complete irony, the etymology of this word is • March 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living
unknown but may relate to a ‘darker side’... It is frequently linked to the Greek myth of Narcissus who, of course, became so obsessed with his own reflection in water (he would have been on ‘selfie’ overload in modern times...) that he eventually fell in and drowned; the narcissus plant then sprang from where he died. There is no solid evidence, however, that the flower was named after him and it had been around long before the myth. Narcissus poeticus which grows in Greece, has a fragrance that has been described as ‘intoxicating’ and some suggest that the plant was named for its scent (and not the youth). From the Greek word: ναρκάω, narkao, “I grow numb”, narkao sounding a little like Narcissus... Yet others maintain the names comes from the daffodils bending over streams representing the youth who so long admired his own reflection, a far more romantic theory. It is worth remembering, however, that the name Narcissus was not uncommon for men in Roman times, so perhaps it really had nothing to do with the Greek legend. Who really knows? The word ‘daffodil’ itself comes from ‘addodel’ which comes from the word asphodel. An asphodel is in fact a different flower! But the two flowers seem to have been confused in common speech and the one Botanical drawing, c. 1659 lent its name to the other. To us Brits daffodil was obviously a preferred term to Narcissus! There were other terms for the plant such as ‘Lent lily’ but these have all faded away. If it hasn’t happened already, I’m sure we’ll soon all welcome in a burst of yellow daffodils which will usher in Spring at last.

A Walk on the Wild Side Would it be presumptuous to say that we are starting to see the back of Winter... And as the days start to lengthen slowly, the first spring shoots emerge. It makes sense then that one of the first to arrive is the pungent: Wild Garlic. Pungency being the flavour of Spring. Imagine the energy that is required to break through those first chilled, frosty mornings to reach skyward; this is pungency in action! And you can feel this if you consume something pungent, as you feel it warm from the inside to the surface just like spring shoots pushing forth from under the ground. The stillness of Winter is slowly being replaced with a frenetic energy as birds, insects and animals begin their natural courtship. Spend enough time outdoors through this time and you will notice the tempo as it rises and rises with lengthening of the days and the rising of the temperature. The air will start to fill with the heady fragrances of cherry blossoms, meadowsweet and elderflower. Warm days and intoxicating fragrances. Wild garlic is probably the easiest of all the wild foods to identify and is one of the earliest of spring plants to arrive. It is usually that you can smell it before you can see it. Always growing in such numbers that the air is filled with its pungent aroma. Once located, just by simply crushing its leaf will be emitted a wonderful pungent garlic aroma. Wild Garlic, Allium ursinum, is a member of the Liliaceae family. It is generally found in open
woodlands or hedgebanks, and in my experience very close to a source of water. Either close to a stream or on the bend of a road where the tyres splash water as they pass. I would only use roadside plants for learning to ID and not for consumption due to the risk of being contaminated with heavy metals by the local traffic. The leaves are broad and and taper, almost bladelike. The bulb underground is a singular bulb, unlike shop bought garlic. Only in early spring just as the shoots are rising, are the bulbs worth eating. As a forager, once the leaves are resplendent and plentiful, it is these I am after. Garlic’s use and benefits in some of the most chronic ailments such as hypertension, high cholesterol, thrombosis, arteriosclerosis, diabetes and cancer have been well researched and publicised. But what probably is less known but as well understood is its use for treating respiratory, gastrointestinal and epidermal system infections, both acute and chronic. This is due to its anti-fungal, anti-viral, antibacterial, anti-parasitic and immunostimulant properties.

Therefore wild garlic is a beneficial addition to the diet, promoting the general health of the body when used regularly. It is particularly effective in reducing high blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels. All parts of the plant can be used and the juice can also be applied externally to rheumatic and arthritic joints where its mild irritant action and stimulation to the local circulation can be of benefit. Wild garlic is incredibly versatile as both a food and a medicine and grows in such abundance that one could be considered almost criminal not to add this to your diet. The volatile oils in the leaves will evaporate if it is cooked for too long so I suggest making use of it in the following ways: It makes a wonderfully pungent pesto sauce, mixed through with chicken in pasta is divine. I also preserve the leaves in salt to make a great garlic salt or by adding just a little salt they can be lacto-
fermented and preserved to use in the wintertime. Some brave souls add it to their juicing recipes! Generally where you would add garlic you can use wild garlic. Just go easy, add a little at a time as it is very powerful in flavour. NB: Remember to always consult an expert when foraging and self medicating. Always ID plants 100% before consuming and seek a professionals advice. Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide and diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.

Chicken & vegetable parcels Wrap chicken breasts and finely sliced vegetables in their own little packages to steam to perfection. Serves: 4 adults. Preparation time: 15 mins. Cooking time: 40 mins
Ingredients: 4 skinless, boneless uncooked chicken breasts 4 spring onions trimmed and sliced 1 carrot cut into matchstick strips 1 courgette cut into matchstick strips 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder 1 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp reduced salt soy sauce 1 pinch ground black pepper
What to do: 1. Cut 4 pieces of greaseproof paper or baking parchment, each measuring approximately 30 cm square. 2. Put each chicken breast onto a separate square of greaseproof paper. 3. Mix the vegetables together and place an equal amount on top of each piece of chicken. Sprinkle with five spice powder (if using), the ginger, soy sauce and black pepper.
10 • March 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living
4. Fold up the paper to wrap up the chicken completely. 5. Put the parcels into a steamer (see tip). Cover and steam for 35-40 minutes. 6. Check that the chicken is properly cooked. Unwrap one parcel and insert a sharp knife into the thickest part. The juices should run clear with no traces of pink. 7. Serve the chicken in the parcels, along with vegetables and noodles, rice or potatoes. Tip 1: You don’t need a fancy steamer to make this recipe. A fold-out steamer tray or a colander that fits inside a saucepan will do nicely. Tip 2: It’s important when steaming to make sure that the water never boils dry. Check from time to time and top up with extra boiling water if needed.

These were buildings in which hops are dried and stored, they usually date to the 1800s and detached from other buildings to minimise the fire risk. It comprises a kiln, with a cowl on the roof that would extract air through the drying floor on which the hops were laid, and a rectangular stowage attached where the hops could cool on an upper floor before being pressed into ‘pockets’ and stored on the ground floor. Early purpose built oast houses, small buildings which included a kiln and rooms for the green and dried hops, are extremely rare. Evidence for early kilns may survive in some barns. Domestic conversion has generally resulted in the loss of the hearths of the plenum chamber where the kilns were located and the press where sacks or ‘pockets’ were filled. Most Oasthouses have now been converted into houses. The earliest surviving oast house is actually in Cranbrook near Tunbridge Wells which dates to 1750. The process itself is documented from soon after the introduction of hops into England in the early 16th century. Square oast houses appeared early in the 20th century as they were found to be easier to build
British Folk Art in Tunbridge Wells An exhibition celebrating the Museum’s folk art collections returning from exhibition at Tate Britain, will also celebrate the newly invigorated interest in this often unsung artistic genre. Folk Art is known as “people’s art” or “popular art” but who are these folk artists and what makes their creations art? Material Obsessions explores these questions through extraordinary works from the Museum’s diverse folk art collection. Highlights of the exhibition include: A Crimean War quilt (1850 - 1900) While recovering from their wartime injuries, soldiers were encouraged to keep their hands busy and away from the temptations of alcohol, gambling and women, by sewing military quilts. This rare and intricate quilt was sewn from thousands of pieces of woollen uniform fabric. George Smart collages (1840) George Smart was an eccentric folk artist from Frant who created collages from scraps of fabric from his trade as a tailor. The animals and local characters he portrayed were similarly peculiar, such as Old Bright the Postman and the Goose Woman. Other objects showcased: Sailor’s love tokens, samplers, a witch’s ball (used to ward off witches) and Gods in bottles. Exhibition will run from until the 31st May.

Danehill: History of a Wealden Village
Danehill lies to the south of Ashdown Forest on the A275. In many ways it is a typical Wealden village. The scientific study of place names has divorced Danehill from the Danes altogether. The romantic Victorians would have had us believe in a great battle fought on Ashdown between King Alfred or Edmund Ironside, his descendent, and a Danish army, the bodies of the slaughtered
buried nearby at Danes Grave on the Forest. The more modern, and more prosaic, interpretation derives this place name from the Anglo-Saxon word denn meaning pasture. This suggests that the first to settle in this area were herdsmen from the coastal villages bringing their pigs and cattle to feed on acorns and beech mast in the Autumn. In fact little is known of the early settlers. There were iron-age
enclosures on Ashdown Forest behind Chelwood Gate, and the Romans were also here, their roads and tracks criss-cross the area, and there were a number of Roman bloomery sites for the production of iron, including one in Toll Wood at Heaven Farm. By the 1200s many of the main farms in the area would have been established. It was an area of scattered farmsteads each with its own enclosed fields but sharing open common land for additional pasture. The original village settlement of Danehill perhaps lay around a green spreading on either side of the London to Lewes road at the point where it was joined by lanes from Freshfield, Horsted Keynes and Chelwood Common. Until a bypass was cut in 1818, the Lewes Road ran along Church Lane and over the hill from which the village takes its name. The earliest evidence for this settlement comes from the dating, of around 1450, of two houses which still

remain in the village centre: The White House and The Forge. The closing years of the fifteenth century saw the beginning of the greatest era of iron production in Sussex, bringing wealth and employment to the area. Danehill was well positioned to benefit from this expansion and by the early 1600s there were at least three other houses built around the green. There was also a village pond in front of Danehill Farm. In the early 1950s it was filled in to make a car park for the British Legion Club but, like a phantom from the past, in periods of extreme weather the pond returns to haunt local residents.
the Earl of Sheffield, and is where the War Memorial now stands. At that time Danehill did not exist as a separate parish and the new Holy Trinity Chapel was a chapel of ease compared to the parish church of Fletching. It was built of red brick and, unlike most churches, was placed on a northsouth axis. It had a porch on the north end, an aisle-less nave and a chancel at the south end. In a petition presented to the bishop requesting the establishment of a new chapel it was stated “that the population of the district called Chelwood and Danehill which forms the northern part of the parish is large and increasing, that the said district lies at such a distance from the parish church at Fletching that the inhabitants thereof cannot without great

The church of All Saints, which is now such a delightful feature of the village, came after the creation of the ecclesiastical parish of Danehill from parts of the parishes of Horsted Keynes and Fletching. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Chichester on the 12th August 1892 and is the work of the famous Victorian architect George Frederick Bodley, pupil of Sir George Gilbert Scott. This new church was built of sandstone, quarried in Scaynes Hill, and roofed with Collyweston slates from a quarry near Grantham. It has a western tower, with the nave and chancel under one roof. Many of the stained-glass windows were designed by that great craftsman in glass, Charles Eamer Kempe.

Mothers’ quote
God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.
As it is Mother’s Day this month we’re dedicating this featurette to mums and mums only!
Rudyard Kipling
Ways you can be pampered this Mothers Day! You may need to drop a few hints but here are some ideas you can present to your kids for the little things they can do to make your Mothers Day very special:
Breakfast in Bed Even if it’s a bowl of cornflakes brought to you, it’s still a luxury that costs nothing! Pancakes are also always a winner.
Flowers The kids can pick some from the garden and or make some out of tissue paper! And of course a bouquet is always welcome.
Sudoku
Slippers! They can warm your slippers on a radiator and bring these to you just before you get out of bed... comfy.
The Gift: Chocolate Hand-dipped chocolate-covered Rice Krispies treats, easy and fun to make and all for you! (well maybe they can have one too...).
Cleaning your bedroom Yes! What a wonderful present... even if they simply vacuum your carpet, it all helps.

Mother’s Day: A potted history
In the 1500’s people would return to their ‘mother church’, the main church or cathedral of the area, for a service to be held on Laetare Sunday - the fourth Sunday of Lent. This would have been either a large local church, or more often the cathedral of the area. This activity was commonly called going “a-mothering”. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their own mother church, most usually with their mothers, fathers and other family members. Sometimes it was the only time that the whole family could gather together, since on other days they were prevented from doing so by conflicting working hours as many were in service. Later, young people who were in service were given a day off on that date so they could visit their families (whether returning to their ‘mother church’ or not). Some would pick wild flowers along the way to place in the church or give to their mothers.
she had started and to set aside a day for everyone to honour their mothers: “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world’. Anna’s own mother, Ann Jarvis, had been a peace activist who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War and had created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Due to Anna Jarvis’ campaign efforts, several US states officially recognized Mother’s Day. Then in 1914 the president, Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation creating Mother’s Day as the second Sunday in May, ‘a national holiday to honour all mothers’. Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother’s Day, when the holiday was, inevitably, commercialised she became resentful and angry that companies would profit from the holiday - what would she have thought of modern holidays! By the early 1920’s, Hallmark and other companies had started selling Mother’s Day cards. Jarvis became so embittered she even tried to rescind Mother’s Day - the day she had worked so

hard to establish. From her point of view, it was supposed to be about sentiment, not about profit. Her original intention was that a show of appreciation should be made to mothers with a personal letter expressing love and gratitude. Jarvis started organising boycotts and threatened lawsuits to try to stop this the tide of commercialization... all in vain. The established Mother’s Day holiday was later assimilated into other countries as well as our own, as we know. Here, it came to be synonymous with Mothering Sunday. In modern consciousness they are now seen as one and the same occasion. Perhaps spare a thought for Anna Jarvis, who worked so hard to establish Mother’s Day, and her original intentions for the day; and this year as well as the usual card, flowers, etc. why not write a letter to your mother as well... food for thought.
By the early 20th century the tradition of Mothering Sunday had started to wane. However in the US a campaign, for an official ‘Mother’s Day’, spear-headed by Anna Jarvis of West Virginia, was well under way by 1908. Anna wanted to honour her own mother by continuing the work

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you January think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Wakehurst Place in the 21st Century Pinging Tree Stories Across the Sussex Countryside
Jean-Louis Le Moigne / NHPA
There’s a whole new way to explore one the region’s bestknown tourist attractions as Wakehurst embraces the latest mobile technology in a groundbreaking project. The widest implementation of outdoor iBeacons means visitors to Kew’s country garden in Sussex can now have information at their fingertips in a matter of seconds. By downloading a free ‘app’ (either at home or when they arrive at the gardens), the humble mobile phone or tablet can unlock a host of cool facts and activities every time visitors pass one of the special beacons which are hidden across the 500-acre estate at Ardingly.
Exmoor ponies. Grazing checks the spread of Bracken, Taking Care of Sussex which creates layers of leaf litter, and stifles heathland plants. Bracken is also mown or removed by volunteers.

Walking on the reserve: There is a trail of about two miles, starting at the car park, and takes one to two hours. The slopes are mostly gentle, but steep in places, with wide unsurfaced paths and some stiles, gates and steps at the entrance. Dogs must be kept on a short, fixed lead. Sussex Wildlife Trust aim to help people enjoy, understand and take action to conserve the wildlife and landscapes of Sussex. They are always look for volunteers to help manage Old Lodge Nature Reserve. Please contact the Trust on 01273 492630 if you are interested. “We have over 50 iBeacons across Kew’s two sites, Wakehurst and Kew Gardens”, explains Jon Little who headed the project. “This technology has been used to great effect in indoor setting such as museums and shopping malls, but we decided to test its capability in the wilds of our botanic gardens. The initial results prove most promising as we can unlock many of the secrets about some of our rare and beautiful plants.” Currently the Discover Kew app is available, free, for iPhone users with the Android app due for release shortly. Just search for Discover Kew in the app store. “Phone or iPad in hand, visitors can explore Wakehurst’s new Brilliant Bark Trail”, says interpretation producer Astrid Krumins. “You can meet eight of our fabulous North American trees exploring their stunning bark and uncover some of Kew’s science stories behind these trees. There’s something for everyone whether you crave facts about the species or enjoy hands-on challenges.” The app doesn’t need wi-fi to find each location; the beacons simply ping necessary information to devices running the app. A GPS map shows where the user is in relation to the brilliant bark trees and key features at Wakehurst such as the Millennium Seed Bank, restaurant, toilets and the visitor centre. The pilot will run for three months before being evaluated. If successful it could expand into seasonal trails and visitor information.

The Sackville’s Snow Leopard East Grinstead’s familiar landmark, the heraldic snow leopard, on top of the bell tower at Sackville College, has to be taken down for expensive repairs to the tower roof, mountings and surrounds. Gales this winter caused the leopard to lean over at a very dangerous angle.
made in 1609, 17 days before he died. The almshouse was eventually built, for 21 poor men and 10 poor women.
The snow leopard is sometimes mistaken for a spotted dog. In fact the snow leopard or ‘ounce’ is part of the Sackville coat of arms. This does not mean that the Sackville family owned leopards, but the leopard symbol shows their high status, just as the lion denotes royalty. During the time of the Norman Conquest, Herbrand de Sauqueville came to England. His descendants married into other landowning families such as the Dalyngrigge family of Bodiam castle, or the Bakers of Sissinghurst. John Sackville married Margaret Boleyn, aunt of the more famous Anne Boleyn. This made the Sackvilles cousins of Queen Elizabeth I, who trusted and employed her cousins. Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset founded Sackville College almshouse in his will, which he
The almshouse still serves its original purpose and provides affordable accommodation for elderly local residents of limited means. Sackville College is also a Grade 1 listed building and an historic attraction in East Grinstead. It is thought that there was a leopard on the tower from the eighteenth century. Visitors can see the predecessor of the present leopard, inside Sackville College. After standing out on the tower for 130 years, he has been brought inside. Although his ears, tail and tongue have been mended and he looks rather battered, he is much loved, especially by children of roughly the same height. The present leopard was put up on 10th January 1986, thanks to the generosity of Mrs Davy, a former Assistant Warden. He was carved by Glyn Foulkes of Burledon, Hampshire, a sculptor of ship figureheads. The leopard is made of laminated mahogany, protected and painted with epoxy systems (a type of resin). The leopard will have to be removed by crane as it is very heavy, then an assessment of the repairs needed for the tower roof, mounting and support will be carried out, before any work can begin. This will all be very expensive. The leopard on the tower is a landmark in the town, and represents a tradition of at least 160 years. It would be sad if he has to be taken down permanently. Please support the Sackville College Repair Fund by visiting for a guided tour when the college is open in the Summer, or by supporting fundraising events that will be held there this year. Details of opening times and events are on the website: www.sackvillecollege.org.uk. Donations can be sent to Sackville College, High Street East Grinstead RH19 3BX, or handed in at the office on weekday mornings. If you would like to arrange a group visit, phone 01342 323414, or email admin@sackvillecollege. org.uk

Earn your place Every plant in the garden has to earn its place, it must give some reward for the time and care put into its being there and this is especially true in Winter. On the cold short winter days, my brisk pace is sometimes slowed to peek into an interesting front garden, a beautiful Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ - known more commonly as corkscrew or twisted hazel – looks stunning in its detail of finely corkscrewed branches, the low sun reflecting in the dewdrops, soon it will have pretty catkins and then it will fade from view as the other plants and shrubs that surround it begin to grow. On warmer winter days a slight scent arouses interest; I followed my nose to a shady corner where I was confronted with Daphne aureomarginata, not a lady who had lost her way but a mature shrub covered in highly scented flowers, heartwarming on a cold day.

Hamamelis, known to many as Witch Hazel is perfect for the winter garden. It has a spicy fragrance and fine spidery flowers in reds, orange and yellow. It can be the centrepiece of a border, shining in its glory when all that surrounds it lays dormant. If you garden on a slope, is there a more perfect flower for the top than Hellebore? With no effort you can gaze up into its perfectly formed flower, if you cut away the old and shabby looking leaves then the flower can really show off its beauty – they are the perfect transition from Winter to Spring. So when you’re planning your planting, spare a thought for all the winter beauties that can brighten the dullest, coldest winters day – they certainly earn their place in your garden.
