Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Bowles, the outdoor charity near Crowborough, is celebrating 50 years in 2014.

Hair & Beauty By

THE FINISHING TOUCH How to create the perfect smokey eyes If you want the perfect smokey eyes for that girls night out or that special date just follow these easy quick tips! Since 1964 we have been providing the children and young people of the South East with adventurous, life-changing experiences. We do this regardless of disability or disadvantaged backgrounds. Any profits we make from courses we run for local people and businesses are used to support the charitable work we do – in 2013 we spent nearly £900,000 on charitable activities. Throughout 2014 we are running a range of events and sessions to allow people living in our local communities the chance to see what we do and give them the opportunity to support us.

1. Choose 3 colours you want to use 1 light (e.g. cream or white) 1 medium (e.g light brown) and 1 dark (e.g. dark grey or dark brown) 2. Apply a layer of a light colour over all of they eye to the top of the eyebrow. 3. Starting 2/3 of the way in apply the medium colour to the end of the eye making sure you go up the eye although not all the way to the brow. 4. With the darkest colour use the last third of your eye and blend in with the rest of the eye so it comes just of the edge.

In June we’re holding a summer festival at the centre, near Eridge on the A26. This day of taster events will allow local people to come and try out the activities we offer – rock climbing, skiing, archery, canoeing and lots of other stuff – and see what we are all about.

5. Pull your eye to the side and put a thin layer of eyeliner on to make a perfect smooth eye, and you’re done!

We are also running 50 events through the year to celebrate our 50th birthday – some to raise money, some to raise our profile in our local area and some just because they are fun.

1. Do your eyeliner and mascara before your face makeup so they have time to dry.

If you, your family and your friends want to help a small local charity, please get in touch – we need skiers, runners, cyclists, marshals, climbers, fundraisers, sponsors, etc. We will also be doing all of the things we are renowned for – activity and skills, courses for the people who live in our area. Any income we make from these courses helps us to help the young people of the region. We work with a wide range of groups working with under-25s – young carers, uniformed groups, disabled and youth groups. Want to put them false lashes on but can’t get them perfect?

2. Apply a thin layer of glue to the lashes and let it dry for about 30 seconds. 3. Put the end of the lash just in from the outside edge of your eye, place over the eye hold both ends till they feel secure then carefully put a layer of eyeliner over the top to blend in any gaps the glue has left! Need your colour done but don’t have time? Don’t worry! We are now offering a 10 minute colour, yes 10 minutes! This product is permanent, has a 100% grey coverage and is a totally natural colour! Queen of puddings This classic British pudding is so simple to make, and it tastes delicious with its crown of golden meringue.

What to do:

1. Grease an 850ml (1½ pint) baking dish with ½ tsp of the butter. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs into the baking dish. 2. Warm the milk with the remaining butter and vanilla extract until lukewarm. Take care that the mixture doesn’t get too hot. Remove from the heat and add half the sugar, stirring to dissolve it. Beat in the egg yolks. Pour into the baking dish and stir into the breadcrumbs, then leave to soak for 15 minutes.

Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 35 mins Cooking time: 30 mins

Ingredients:

3. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to Gas Mark 4/180°C/fan oven 160°C. 4. Bake the pudding for 20-25 minutes, until lightly set. Remove the baking dish from the oven and cool for 5 minutes, then carefully spread the jam over the surface.

1 tsp butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

5. Whisk the egg whites in a grease-free bowl until they hold their shape, then add the remaining sugar, whisking again until stiff and glossy. Pile the meringue on top of the pudding, then return it to the oven to bake for a further 5-8 minutes, until golden brown. Serve at once.

40g caster sugar

Tip 1: Egg whites won’t whip if there is the slightest trace of grease in the bowl or on the beaters - and that includes egg yolk too, so take care when separating the eggs.

50g white or wholemeal breadcrumbs 225ml milk

Tip 2: Use blackcurrant or apricot jam for a change.

2 eggs separated

Tip 3: A hand-held electric mixer is best for whisking the egg whites, otherwise use a hand whisk - it will just take longer.

2 tbsp strawberry or raspberry jam

Springtime Musings.... Apparently if you stand at the Equator on the first day of Spring, you will see the sun pass directly over head. This is only true two times a year; the first day of Spring and the first day of Autumn. To test this theory, it might be a good excuse to book a Spring holiday to warmer climes. Another idea is the phenomenon called ‘Spring Fever’ which apparently occurs when a sudden warm spell follows a long cold period. When the temperature rises, there’s an effect from the dilation or expansion of the blood vessels, so that blood is carried to the body surface where heat can be lost quickly. Some people experience an energetic feeling to this reaction! It does explain why Spring seems to be a great time for getting things done. Enjoy a wonderful start to this month and fingers crossed for some lovely weather.... x

CONSERVATION

The Trust. Motorists driving across the expanse of heathland that is the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex or, taking an afternoon stroll along the eastern South Downs may have noticed numbers of ponies grazing... These ponies are quite likely to be owned by the Sussex Pony Grazing & Conservation Trust, which provides a grazing service to landowners and farmers of wildlife-rich areas that require grazing of course, or nutrient-poor vegetation.

12 • March 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

The Trust itself consists of some 100 volunteers who undertake checking of ponies one day per month. Pony grazing was originally begun to conserve the flower-rich slopes of the Firle Escarpment Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on the South Downs, which was seriously under-grazed due to the poor quality grazing and the incidence of bovine TB. During 2005 this expanded to include the carrying out of summer grazing of heathland in Ashdown Forest SSSI.

© Monty Larkin

GRAZING Currently, the Trust owns 77 wild (semi-feral) ponies, though this number may increase; all ponies are of the Exmoor breed, mainly pedigree, with most having come directly up from the West Country. They are extremely hardy, being able to tackle the tough, invasive purple-moor grass, gorse and bracken on Ashdown heathlands and tor grass on the Downs, conditions that modern farm livestock would not be able to cope with. They are also being increasingly used to graze the RSPB’s new 450 acre reserve Broadwater Warren reserve near Eridge; the Trust’s ponies are also grazing on Chailey Common. Background. Ashdown Forest and Chailey Common SSSI’s. These expanses of lowland heathland (covering 7,000 and 450 acres respectively) are noted for their wet and dry heath plant communities and associated insects. At Ashdown, birds to be found include the rare nightjar, dartford warbler and woodlark, the area being designated a SPA (Special Protection Area) due to the occurrence of these species. The Trust commenced grazing at Chailey in November 2012. The common is grazed as three separate areas so there is always info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

Broadwater Warren is being created from formerly coniferafforested heathland. Increasing numbers of ponies will graze the traditional heath flora as it re-establishes. Steve Wheatley, Sites Manager, says, “…Most notably the ponies have been very popular with visitors to the reserve; we have received lots of positive comments about how nice it is to see the ponies in the Wealden landscape... We look forward to their return in 2014 and hope that they will continue to be part of our heathland restoration project for many years to come.” The South Downs are of international landscape importance, renowned for their nutrient-poor, wildlife-rich chalk grasslands, which can contain up to 36 wild flowers and grasses per square metre! It is notably rich for insects, including the chalkhill blue butterfly. With some 93% of this precious habitat destroyed since the 1940’s, the remaining areas in Sussex form a significant proportion of remaining English chalk grassland. Malcolm Emery, Natural England’s Senior Reserves Manager says, “Over the years, the National Nature Reserves at Castle Hill near Woodingdean and, Lullington Heath on the edge of the Friston Forest, have benefitted hugely from the indomitable Exmoors during some testing winter seasons, for both the animals and the volunteers checking them... We hope to keep up our winter welcome for the ponies on the Reserves, not only because they do such a good job of maintaining the habitats, but also because they look so stunning!” Why The Need for Grazing? Heathland areas are suffering from habitat degradation due to the cessation in the mid-20th century of traditional summer grazing and winter collection of bracken by Commoners. This lack of use, the grazing being of very low quality, has led to the rank 14 • March 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

at least one area for those visitors who do not want to encounter ponies whilst taking a walk.

growth of bracken, purple moorgrass and gorse, leading to these once largely treeless landscapes becoming more wooded. The South Downs in East Sussex have sites totalling over a thousand acres that are substantially dominated by tor grass. Tor grass is notorious for its vigorous growth and for overwhelming neighbouring specie-rich vegetation plus the myriad insects that thrive on them. The dense layer of dead matter (thatch) that accumulates during the autumn is an additional factor in suppressing bio-diversity. Tor grass is tough, unpalatable and of very low nutritional value to most modern farm livestock. The situation generally across this part of the world, is aggravated by nitrogen deposition from exhaust pollution; most wild flora having evolved to cope only with low nutrient soils. An Answer: An Old Breed for a New Situation. Targeted grazing by hardy wild ponies is a practical, landscape-scale strategy, aimed at limiting habitat degradation. The Exmoor Pony is the oldest of the native breeds of British ponies and is thought to be the closest pure descendent of ponies that inhabited Britain 100,000 years ago... long before the arrival of man. They have hardly changed since those prehistoric times when they lived alongside mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers and are one of the purest

examples of equines in existence. This means that they all look alike and have unique features that have helped them to survive for thousands of years. Exmoors were chosen for three reasons: 1) being very hardy and are highly suitable for low-quality grazing and the fact they are immune to bovine TB, 2) rather aloof in their response to people, 3) assisting a British breed by creating a new demand. Though not traditional to Sussex, they are carrying out a new job under new circumstances, mainly assisting with the safeguarding of SSSI’s. We only have mares and geldings which are in mixed-sex herds with well-established social hierarchies. How To Become Involved. The Trust encourages public support for the important work of conserving their local Sussex landscape by becoming a member or making a donation. People living locally may also wish to become actively involved as Trust Lookers - ponies are checked daily by the ‘Lookers’. The work of the Trust relies substantially on continued donations and legacies. For instance, we are currently seeking funding to replace the Trust’s ageing 4x4 truck, which is so essential for carrying out the work. Prawn Jambalaya

Serves: 4 adults This easy-to-make prawn dish will keep all the family satisfied, and is so much healthier Preparation time: 15 mins than fatty take-aways and frozen meals. Cooking time: 20 mins

What to do:

1. Put the rice into a large saucepan and cook in simmering water for 12-15 minutes, or according to instructions on the packet, until tender. Drain well. 2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and cook the onion and celery until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the green pepper, mushrooms, tomatoes and prawns and stir-fry for 3-4 more minutes.

Ingredients: 250g easy cook long grain white rice 1 tsp vegetable oil 1 medium onion finely chopped 2 celery sticks thinly sliced 1 green pepper deseeded and chopped 2 handfuls mushrooms (cup or button) sliced 4 tomatoes chopped 250g frozen cooked peeled prawns defrosted 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped 2 tsp Cajun seasoning ½ tsp chilli powder 1 pinch ground black pepper

3. Stir in the hot cooked rice, parsley, Cajun seasoning or paprika and chilli powder. Cook for 2 more minutes, stirring all the time until everything is heated through. Check the seasoning, adding some pepper and an extra pinch of chilli powder, if needed. Serve at once. Tip 1: Use 150g chopped cooked chicken instead of prawns, if you like. Tip 2: Save time by preparing the rice in advance, rinsing it with cold water to cool it quickly, then storing in the fridge until needed later in the day. Make sure that it is reheated well by adding to the frying pan with the green pepper and mushrooms and cooking for 3-4 minutes before stirring in the tomatoes and prawns.

Crowborough during World War One In his recently published book, Crowborough¹s War, local author Paul Adams looks at Crowborough’s role in World War One and weaves personal stories and experiences together with numerous photos, many previously unpublished, to tell the story of Crowborough and Crowborough people’s experiences of the war. During the war the town had a large army camp on its doorstep, a military hospital in the town itself, which treated British, Australian and Canadian injured, and, of course, was the home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In addition, like many communities up and down the country, it hosted some of the quarter of a million Belgian refugees who sought sanctuary in Britain during the war years. One of the many residents who took up arms in the early stages of the war was the professional at the Crowborough Beacon Golf Club, Charles Macey. He had become the club’s assistant pro from 1906, and the professional from 1912 - a position he was to hold (with a gap for his war service) until 1941. He also had a son called Charles Charlie), who was a well-known local character as well as following in his father’s footsteps at the golf club. The 1911 census shows Charles Macey senior living in lodgings in Blackness Road, Crowborough. By 1914 he had moved to Gladstone Road, and during the war years he was married and established a family home at Preston Villa, Whitehill Road - all addresses within easy reach of the golf club. His war service mirrors that of my grandfather, Nimmy Adams, who 20 • March 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

lived in a cottage adjacent to the New Mill, Crowborough Warren, and worked as a woodman on the local landed estate. In November 1914, a few months after the war started, a new battalion of the Territorial Force (precursors of today’s Territorial Army) was formed locally, and both men were quick to join - Charles Macey was given the service number 2817, and my grandfather was 2806, so must have been just ahead of him in

the queue! Both men passed their medical checks a few days later at Hastings. After a period in home defence - fear of German raids and incursions on mainland Britain was rife throughout the war - they were sent to France together in May 1916, when “home service” Territorials became liable for overseas service. Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. the non-commissioned ranks to Lance Sergeant, Charles Macey was selected for officer training and returned to England in September 1917. Prior to the War, officers were drawn from a very narrow social strata - mostly from the landed gentry, the aristocracy, and from professional families. There was some attempt to maintain this exclusivity to start with, but, by 1917, with the average life expectancy of a front line infantry officer as little as six weeks, the need for replacements meant the net had to be cast ever wider, giving men like Charles Macey the chance of a commission. He was subsequently posted to the Royal Sussex Regiment as a Second Lieutenant. He survived the war, and on demobilisation he returned to his role as club professional at the Beacon Golf Club. Nimmy, who went on to be wounded three times altogether between 1916 and 1918, secured a job with the Goldsmiths Company after the war, resuming his estate work. They are two of the 1000 or so Crowborough men who are believed to have passed through the armed forces during the conflict. Nearly 200 of them did not return, and the names of the fallen are recorded in a roll of honour at the end of the book.

HIGH BEECHES Woodland and Water Garden High Beeches Garden, or The Beeches Estate as it was known, was bought by Sir Robert Loder in 1849. He enlarged the house and built the farm buildings. The Clock Tower was added to the farm buildings to commemorate Colonel Loder’s horse, Spion Kop, winning the Derby in 1920 setting a new record for the race. Sir Robert Loder was born in 1823 in St Petersburg and inherited a substantial fortune from his father with extensive estates in Northamptonshire as well as Sussex. He was a High Sherrif, Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant as well as MP for New Shoreham. Marrying Maria Busk, daughter of a welsh poet, they had 10 children, three of whom were Sir Edmund Loder, Wilfred Loder, and Gerald Loder, 1st Lord Wakehurst. Sir Edmund Loder married Marion Hubbard, daughter of the owner of the nearby estate Leonardslee where he lived from 1888 developing the Gardens. plane to crash, hitting a chimney of the house on its way down. The house burnt for several days and tragically three people in the house died. Later the crew of the plane were arrested in Tilgate by the Home Guard on suspicion of being enemy agents. With the house now in effect ruined, the Boscawens had to have it demolished in l969, as it had become unsafe. The Loders, who owned the house next door, ‘took in’ the Boscawens following the fire. The first thing the Boscawens had to do was build a house, whilst getting to know the garden. They were fortunate as Eric Stockton, Col Loder’s gardener agreed to stay on. Such continuity is essential to the preservation of an historic garden such as High Beeches. Eric stayed until he died in l979. The Boscawens have continued to maintain and develop the garden retaining the integrity of the sensitively planted natural landscape, which is listed Grade II by English Heritage. Graceful in maturity, the garden is an oasis away from the busy world around. The Garden was made a Conservation Trust in l989 with a view to its future preservation. ‘Love all the Seasons, because every

season has its own treasures’ Mehmet Mural ildan High Beeches is a garden for all seasons, its beauty and tranquillity show case a plantsman’s collection of many rare trees and shrubs. Spring brings the flowering of the magnificent magnolias and camellias growing amid hosts of daffodils. Dainty miniature narcissi and other spring bulbs flourish here. In early Summer the woodland glades are carpeted with swathes of native bluebells and surrounded by the glorious colour and fragrance of a multitude of azaleas and rhododendrons. The sumptuous Rhododendron Loderi

are at their best. The unique and ancient acid wildflower meadow is an entrancing sight in June alive with butterflies and buzzing with insects. The fine old Stuartias will be in flower, High Beeches holds the National Collection. Mid Summer is a peaceful time to relax and enjoy the wildlife attracted by the numerous wildflowers throughout the garden. The contrasting colours and textures of the varied foliage create a backdrop against which the beautiful Hydrangeas and Eucryphias look their best. In mid to late August the azure blue willow gentians are in flower, High Beeches is the only garden in England where they are naturalised. Autumn brings a breathtaking display of colour, amongst the best in the country, provided by the many spectacular Nyssas, Maples and Liquidambers growing throughout the garden and contrasting with the conifers. The beds of cyclamen glow in the Autumn light. High Beeches is open to the public every day except Wednesdays between 1pm and 5pm. Love Roses?

A Straightforward guide to growing the most favourite of flowers this Spring. by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery

Where to plant?

Feeding

Most roses require plenty of sun. Do not plant under trees or large shrubs as they will be competing for moisture and nutrients. The planting area needs to be reasonably well drained and the soil can be improved by digging in well-rotted manure.

There are several proprietary complete rose feeds available from your local Nursery or Garden Centre and these can be used in the Spring and again after the first flush of flowers. Follow the instructions on the box. Do not overfeed.

Planting

The easiest way to prune bush and shrub roses is to reduce the height by half to two thirds around the end of February removing any dead wood as you go. Climbing roses can also be pruned at the same time down to the required height. Rambling roses need to be pruned after flowering. As the rose heads fade it is worthwhile dead heading as this will encourage further flowering. The exception to this is the shrub roses which produce hips.

Roses are available as bare root usually from October to March and as container grown from April to September. Bare root Soak roots well before planting. The hole should be large enough to accommodate the root system which should be spread out. Add a little Fish, blood and bone fertilizer to the soil you have taken out of the hole and mix well. Back fill the hole and firm the soil gently around the rose. Aim to have the soil level with the bud union. Container grown Similar to above. Keep root disturbance to a minimum and water thoroughly particularly in hot, dry spells. Mulching Ensure the ground is clear of weeds and old rose debris and mulch with a wellrotted manure in spring and autumn to a depth of around 8 to 10cm.

Pruning

Pest & Disease Roses are prone to various pests and disease such as Blackspot, Rust, mildew and aphids (greenfly). Regular spraying with Roseclear and Biosept will control all these problems. Follow the directions on the bottle. Varieties to look out for • Bush Rose • Especially For You, Fragrant Delight, Savoy Hotel • Climbing Roses • Compassion, Danse du Feu, Golden Showers

Local Help for Harambee

For the past 15 years, Ashdown Park Hotel Employee Roger Dann and his wife Lesley have worked continually to support the youngsters in Harambee, Kenya, who risk getting involved in crime, violence and drugs. Here is a ‘Q&A’ with Lesley about their vital work: What brought you to start your charity and why did you choose Kenya specifically?

To see the new safe house open with more boys from the street to make them safe.

We had both been to Kenya to help the Kenyan Scout Association with their work with street boys. I first went in 1998 and Roger in 1999. We would introduce boys into scouting where they would check them medically, teach them living skills and where possible reunite them with families. After a few years we felt that we wanted to see the children safe at night, fed and sent to school. So we started to look into this in 2006 and finally set up the charity on 1st Feb 2007.

To have 8 sponsors come forward to support the 8 boys who will be going to either a skills college or secondary school – both of which have to be paid for.

How much progress have you made so far? We have built one safe house and the second is just about finished. In the first, we now have 34 boys living there but have had as many as 40 at one time. Two years ago saw the 10 oldest lads move out of the house into their own homes and working for themselves selling goods. They are all doing well and still have their homes. The oldest one, Denilson, works for the charity, looking after the boys we have now. Having been on the street for 9 yrs, he understands them. He has also been trained in soapstone carving and part of his living is earned from our buying the stock to sell in the UK to raise funds. What are you hoping to achieve this year with the charity? To continue to empower the Kenyans to take on more to help sort out the problems of the boys on the streets. 30 • March 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

To set up drop in centres where the remaining children/young people on the street can seek help, medical attention, be fed, taught how to read and write, try to reunite them with family. What feedback have you had so far from the people you’re helping? The boys are very grateful and love being in the house, cared for and going to school. They are always saying thank you. From the adults helping us, they thank us for helping them to in turn, do something to help. What help would you like from the local area? We recently held a Race Night in Heathfield , any sponsored event which could support the charity would be wonderful. Schools have a chance to sponsor one of the boys through secondary school. We also run a class in soapstone decorating and carving if any groups (adult or youth) would like to experience this. If anyone would like to talk about the project please do get in touch, www. harambeeforkenya.org

On Top Of The World In the last three years, I’ve broken my leg, my collar bone and been mauled by one of my cats. This last episode left me needing surgery and yet more time in hospital.

year, I took part in a sponsored spinning class and managed to keep going for three hours and thirty seven minutes, raising around £1000 as a group for young epilepsy.

It’s a funny thing. Being laid up and just left with your own thoughts. I confess that there were times when I felt very low; but lying in a hospital left with my own thoughts and looking around at my fellow patients, did give me a sense of perspective. There are so many people who are much worse off than me. So, yes. I am lucky!

I was hooked! So I decided that in August, in the spirit of Ranulph Fiennes, I’m going to attempt the climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in support of local charity Young Epilepsy.

That’s when I made a decision to change my life. My goal was to make a difference for others and take myself out of my comfort zone. For instance, in March last

This charity helps to support children and young adults with mild to severe epilepsy by providing diagnostics, assessment, rehabilitation and support to individuals and their families. They have a special place in my heart because I was a childhood sufferer of epilepsy.

By Iva Dixon

I know the training will be hard and the climb itself even harder, but that’s where I see myself and if you would kindly offer to help my cause with just the smallest of donations, I really will feel ‘On Top Of The World.’ I need to raise a minimum of £4750, however in my head I have a goal of a £10,000! My link is http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ IvaDixon Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. With Love, Iva Dixon

Optimise your health at The Crossing What a huge responsibility: preparing meals. The health and well being of those you feed is at stake and you should ideally have wholesome ingredients. High quality produce can be expensive, and with the cost of living so high, I don’t know anyone who is not genuinely conscious of their spending. This is why I’d like to share an opportunity with you: At The Crossing, Forest Row, there is a project promoting real pasture fed foods and mineral dense, highly nutritious veg. We are a community group working towards creating a community garden and farm, just along the Forest Way, off Brambletye Lane. Working with volunteers and paying members on our giant allotment, we grow leafy greens, salads and herbs. We’re also planning courses and information on optimising our health through nutrition. We invite you to get involved, to come and see what has been achieved so far. We have fenced 48 x 8 metre raised beds and practice NO-DIG, a less strenuous and more productive system, after horticulturalist and author Charles Dowding. The ‘Coop Co-op’ is in it’s 4th

successful year and we are accepting names for the waiting list. Would you be interested in Pig Club? or Lamb Share? On Tune-in Tuesdays we are at The Crossing from 10am til 2pm, come up the field and say hello. Instead of ‘draining’ this agricultural land we have made swales: big ridges and furrows. It goes some way towards addressing the issues surrounding flooding and is an example of

how to hold rainwater on site. The ridges will be planted with fruit orchards, berry bushes and a perennial ground cover of useful herbs. Strips of pasture between the swales will be grazed. Outcomes will be healthy soil, improved fertility, happy livestock, and some beautiful pasture-fed-nutrientdense-meat. Is it possible to live “off the fat of the land”?

By Hook or by Crook Back in the Middle Ages, The forest that belonged to a Lord was set apart for hunting. Peasants were forbidden any activity that might disturb or reduce the foliage cover for the deer. There were, however, sections of common woodland where gathering dead wood and small branches was allowed. Hooked poles, ‘Hooks’ and curved implements, ‘Crooks’ were permitted for gathering such wood to supply daily needs. This feudal right to firewood is the source of the expression, ‘by hook or by crook’ which means ‘to go to any lengths legitimate or otherwise to achieve something’. The expression has implications of both fair and shady means. Certainly we do know that the improper gathering of firewood in medieval times was regarded as a serious criminal offence so sticking with the ‘set method’ was ridgidly expected. 34 • March 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living
