“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Dear Residents,

Whats inside this month

Welcome to the March issue. At long last Spring will be here very soon, we can’t wait! This month is jam packed with lots of interesting articles and features which we’ve worked hard to bring you, including an article about the beautiful High Beeches Garden about 10 minutes from the Ashdown Forest area, which will be open next month.

March

History of High Beeches

We’ve also got a March Gardening Tips Checklist as things kick off in the garden this month - hopefully some sunshine will help it along. We hope you love our front cover as much as we do, of Ashdown Forest’s favourite son Pooh getting to the nearest train station East Grinstead to go up to London. We’ve very grateful Disney gave us permission to use it. We also have a feature about a new pooh book that has just been released. Thank you for supporting our many local businesses, by doing so, we can bring you even more local features of interest in the future, which we hope you enjoy. If you are a charity or community group, please let us know if you need any further promotion. All the best for a great month.

Welcoming wild bees into your garden in 2018! Wild plants • Achillea millefolium (common yarrow) • Centaurea scabiosa (greater knapweed) • Digitalis purpurea (common foxglove) • Eupatorium cannabinum (hemp agrimony) • Lonicera periclymenum (common honeysuckle) • Origanum vulgare (wild marjoram) • Thymus pulegioides (large thyme) • Trifolium repens (white clover) • Verbascum nigrum (dark mullein) • Viburnum opulus (guelder rose) Garden plants • Caryopteris × clandonensis (caryopteris) • Dianthus barbatus (sweet william) • Hesperis matronalis (dame’s violet) • Hyssopus officinalis (hyssop) • Jasminum officinale (common jasmine) • Lavandula angustifolia (English lavender) • Lychnis coronaria (rose campion) • Monarda didyma (bergamot or bee balm) • Verbena bonariensis (purple top)

Helpful hints: Provide both long and short grass, both serve as potential nesting sites for different species of bee. Encourage natural predators, try to avoid chemicals like pesticides or fungicides in your garden. Provide a water source – bees need to drink too, can you create a wildlife pond? Or alternatively, how about a pot sunk into the ground or a bird bath containing a few submerged rocks to enable bees to reach the water. Help out a tired bumblebee, if you see a bumblebee on the ground it’s likely to be tired and in need of food; you can help by mixing sugar with water, placing on a teaspoon and leaving it in front of the bee. 20 perfect plants for pollinators to use in your garden: 10 wild and 10 garden plants to get you started:

HISTORY OF HIGH BEECHES The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew – they were clearly quite the green-fingered family. Back at High Beeches, in the 1890s, Wilfred began to clear the woodland area below the house and started to plant Rhododendrons.

One of the Great Gardens of Sussex, the High Beeches Woodland and Water Gardens were established by the Loder family, shortly after they purchased the High Beeches Estate in 1849. It was then acquired by Anne and Edward Boscawen in 1966, and is still run by descendants of the Boscawen family to this day, as part of the High Beeches Gardens Conservation Trust.

Beeches. Interestingly, the eldest son, Sir Edmund, bought the nearby Leonardslee Estate from his parents-in-law, the Hubbards, in 1888, and the fourth brother, Gerald, who later became Lord Wakehurst, acquired and then laid out the gardens at another local garden, Wakehurst Place, in 1903, which is now run by

His son, Colonel Giles Harold Loder, then went on to inherit the estate in 1906, at the age of 22. He spent all sixty years of his custodianship designing and laying out the gardens. Taking his task seriously, he undertook horticultural training at Waterers Nurseries at Bagshot in Surrey, and also sought advice on the gardens from his friend and neighbour John G Millais, son of Sir John Everett Millais, the pre-Raphaelite artist.

Back in 1849, having purchased the estate, Sir Robert Loder set about enlarging the mansion house, before laying out the formal gardens around it and then adding the coach house and farm buildings. While in residence he had ten children, who all spent their formative years on the estate – his second son, Wilfred, later went on to inherit High

HISTORY OF HIGH BEECHES CONTINUED

Veitch and Co was a famous nursery of yesteryear, that financed many of the great plant-hunters, including Ernest Wilson and the brothers William and Thomas Lobb, on their many planthunting expeditions.

Some of Millais’ advice turned out to be pivotal for the gardens’ development. It included the words: “Do not overcrowd, avoid overconcentration on one genus and use only the best plants, this will help to produce a harmonious balance between landscape and appreciation of individual plants.” Col Loder followed these words to great effect, and created the beautiful garden that is High Beeches. We think Millais’ muchcelebrated words seem all the more poignant with that in mind.

Col Giles himself subscribed to Ernest Wilson’s plantcollecting expedition in 1924, and also received plants from the Southern Hemisphere, collected by Harold Comber, son of the head gardener at Nymans – another celebrated local garden.

plants still remains firmly in place. It now contains many award-winning plants, which sit alongside a number of extremely rare species. Since the 1860s, High Beeches has successfully competed in horticultural shows. A story of one particular success concerns an exhibit at the then intact Crystal Palace, when the head gardener, Mr King, was in competition with plants from the royal gardens.

This tradition of plant collection still continues at High Beeches to this day – most recently a number of rare conifers were planted, which were kindly donated by the Conifer Conservation Programme.

Sir Robert Loder must have been thrilled to receive a telegram containing the words ‘King first, Queen second’, informing him of his success. And this success continues today - in 2017 the gardens took home Best in Show for Rhododendron kesangae at RHS The Early Rhododendron Show.

Similarly, the policy of planting only the best

Back in 1920, the estate developed further, when

“Gardens should be restful to the eye and full of beauty at all seasons.”- J G Millais The Colonel bought two truck-loads of plants from the sale of Veitches Nursery in 1914; among them were Kalopanax pictus, Cornus kousa, Deutzia longifolia veitchii and Davida involucrata, which can all still be seen in the garden today.

HISTORY OF HIGH BEECHES CONTINUED

spirit in which it was created, with the help of Eric Stockton, Col. Loders’ gardener, who provided the continuity that is so essential to the preservation of an historic garden. Eric died in 1979, but his legacy is the garden, which is now listed Grade II* by English Heritage and run by a charitable trust. It is open to the public from April until October. the farm buildings were enhanced by the addition of the clock tower, which is now a much-loved local landmark. It was built to commemorate Col Giles’ horse, Spion Kop, winning the Derby in a record time that year – quite the memento, and a fitting tribute to his work here. And excitingly, having stood through years of inevitable English weather, the clock tower has recently been restored to its former glory – in fact the work was just completed this month. But it was not all smooth sailing – in March 1943, a stricken Canadian Halifax bomber returning from a mission over Germany came down on the mansion house. The crew, who had all bailed out of the craft, were picked up in nearby Tilgate and arrested by the Home Guard

under suspicion of being foreign agents. The family in the house were all lucky and escaped to safety, but tragically three members of staff were killed in the fire. Following the tragedy, Col. Loder moved into the house next door, Dencombe, and continued to garden at High Beeches for the rest of his life. The remains of the old house were eventually pulled down in 1967 as they had become unsafe. Col Loder died in 1966, and the estate was then broken up and sold off in lots by his heirs. This was when Anne and Edward Boscawen bought the garden and farm buildings at auction – the family have continued to maintain and develop the garden in the

Among the garden’s many botanical treasures is the ancient wildflower meadow, which can be seen in all its glory in June. Elsewhere, throughout the garden, blue Willow Gentians have naturalised, making High Beeches the only garden in the country where they have done so. Elsewhere, the Hayward Tyler Hot Engine is thought to be the only one of its’ type in the world still to stand on its original site – it has been painstakingly restored to working order by SEAMS, the Sussex Engine and Associated Machinery Society , and can be seen running on certain days when the garden is open. MAKING HISTORIC HOUSES WORK TODAY from Country Manors to Village Cottages....

East Grinstead’s Cowan Architects has 30 year’s local experience in a wide range of conservation projects and the practice’s newest recruit has an exemplary pedigree and heritage of his own. Jonathan Cerowski is a Conservation Specialist having worked with the best Heritage Architects in the South, on some of the country’s finest buildings. Here he examines a few of the issues to consider when renovating an historic property and making it suitable for modern living: Experts who work in the field of Heritage Architecture often say ‘conservation is the management of change’. Anyone who owns an old house will know that these beautiful exteriors are often blighted by small rooms, confusing floorplans and higgledy piggledy corridors, illsuited to 21st Century living.

interior design magazines and watch home improvement programmes and be drawn in by pretty changes to other properties, which might not suit the size and character of your property. You may need to spend time living in the existing house, flaws and all, to help you think about what changes would really benefit you in the future.

The trick is to make necessary changes whilst retaining the things which make an old house special. We faced this ourselves when we restored our own Grade II*listed ‘home’ – our office in East Grinstead (for which we received an Award from the Sussex Heritage Trust). We continue to address this in our ongoing projects today, where we work with property owners and the Local Planning Authority to make Sussex’s heritage sing.

3. Look for free advice and help – the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, Victorian Society and Georgian Group provide free or affordable advice as leaflets, lectures or websites, providing examples of best practice for different types of house giving you knowledge and a feeling of control.

So are there ‘rules’ to follow? Based on my experience on working on projects ranging from Blenheim Palace to a Cowden Cottage, I do have some ‘top tips’:

4. Talk to your Local Authority – engaging in discussions with local Planning and Conservation Officers early in your development of ideas can lead to creative solutions to design problems. In my experience a collaborative approach helps to de-stress a project.

1. Do your research – local history archives can often provide a wealth of information about how your house has developed, that tight little corridor might have been something else, and the lean-to at the back of the kitchen might have been a relatively recent afterthought. Understanding the way in which a house has been built and extended, and why previous owners have made those changes, can help determine which bits are historically special or important, and therefore might be contentious to change.

5. Seek out the help of impartial professionals – most heritage professions have a governing body who accredit individuals as having a high competency. Though these professionals will charge a fee, they will also have your best interests in mind. For more information about this and other architectural needs, please call Cowan Architects on: 01342 410242.

2. Think about how you might live in the house – it can be all too easy to flick through

Dear Sariah... Introducing Sariah Jackson, trained midwife and mother of four and now our advice-giver extraordinaire.

Who needs 'experts' when you can get

Dear Sariah, My husband died very suddenly 18 months ago. Whilst our marriage hadn’t been a happy one for a number of years it was still devastating, more so for my 3 children who are all in their late teens. Over the last 6 months I have become increasingly close to a male friend who has really supported me and my family through our grief. Recently, our relationship became more and I have started to feel joy again. My two daughters are really happy for me but my 18 year old son is absolutely furious. He thinks I betrayed his father and I will have to choose between him or this man. This new relationship makes me happy but I don’t want to hurt my son. What can I do?

perienced mum!

the best advice from a local, highly-ex

You've all had to deal with some real trauma as a family which can make a family unit become very tight as you lean on each other for strength. Your son may have subconsciously slipped in to the alpha male role and feel very protective of you. It wouldn’t be unusual for him to have lots of strong emotions about this new man. If he was close to his father then he’ll be struggling with the notion that his mum could love anyone else and may feel that you are trying to replace his dad. Whilst you feel ready for this new relationship, for your son, it may be too soon. It is clear that you want to protect him and that is where you have to approach it from. Open channels of communication are vital. Even if he doesn’t appear to be open to it, you must keep talking. Have a grown up conversation with him, just the two of you, and ask him to try and articulate exactly why it’s making him feel upset. Is it the man himself or you with another man? Try to get to the very bottom of his trigger. Once you get there, you can both explore it together and hopefully create a solution. Help him to understand that it’s not reasonable for him to demand that you choose between the two and tell him why this new man is making you happy. Help him to see that this new relationship takes nothing away from what you had with his father. Perhaps get him to talk to his sisters to help him see what they see when you’re with your new man. But overall, you need to give him time. 18 months is not very long for a boy to grieve for his father and his parents as a unit. You’ve been able to grieve and move on to something happier but your son may very well still be struggling with his own grief and seeing you with someone else could be a raw reminder that his dad isn’t here anymore. It might also be helpful for him to speak to an independent grief counsellor if you feel he would be open to that. Just be patient with him. Hopefully, eventually, he will see that you have some joy and be able to share that with you. I wish you all a happy future.

March Gardening Checklist Courtesy of Imberhorne Lane Nursery

After the very wet winter you must be itching to get out in the garden and start to prepare for the coming year. Here are a few ideas to get you started‌ started by laying the tubers in a tray of moist compost. Once the shoots show, pot them individually. Lawns: Always raise the height of the lawnmower for the first few cuts of the season. It is best to wait until late in the month or even into April before sowing grass seed. Towards the end of the month feed the lawn with high nitrogen fertilizer. Continue aerating your lawn and rake to get out debris, dead grass and moss. If moss is a problem use Sulphate of Iron.

Bulbs: Prepare your soil for planting summer flowering bulbs. If the soil is wet and heavy mix in some grit and multi-purpose compost to lighten it and offer improved drainage. A little layer of grit under the bulb will also help.

Roses: Continue to prune large-flowered and cluster-flowered roses. This is the best month for planting new roses. Do not plant a new rose in soil that has previously had a rose grown in it. Feed and mulch roses.

Fruit: Check your rhubarb, if it is starting to push through, cover it with an upturned pot to encourage the plant to produce tender pink shoots. If you are keen for an early crop of strawberries then bring the potted plants into the greenhouse to give them warmth and protection. Water well and feed. It’s time to mulch all your fruit bushes and trees with well rotted manure or homemade compost. Put it round the plant but not touching the young stems and shoots.

Shrubs: Prune summer flowering shrubs such as Buddleja, Lavatera, Hardy Fuchsia and Perovskia. Remove plain green stems from variegated shrubs. Vegetables: If the weather is suitable sow beetroot, broad beans, carrots, leeks, lettuce and other salad leaves. Also onions, parsnips, peas, radish, spinach, summer cabbage and cauliflowers. Ensure the ground is friable. Follow instructions on the packet for sowing depths. Plant onion sets, shallots and garlic. At the end of the month plant early chitted potatoes and put maincrop potatoes in trays or boxes to chit. Regularly hoe vegetable beds so weeds are not taking available moisture or nutrients.

Greenhouse: Give the greenhouse a good spring clean. Using a light multi-purpose or seed compost, sow your seeds for the summer. Water well without drowning them. Dahlias, begonia tubers and canna roots can all be started now. The dahlia and begonias are best

MARCH LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

Of the four nations which make up the United Kingdom, two have their patron saint’s days in March. St Patrick is the one which is more widely celebrated throughout the world, especially in America. This is probably due to the fact that many Irish men immigrated to the USA from the time of the potato famine onwards. The Welsh, on the other hand have not spread out throughout the world in the same way. Patagonia (in South America) is the one place that they seem to have settled - with Patagonian Welsh now developed to be a distinct dialect of Welsh. But for whatever reason St David does not attract the same world-wide attention. St Patrick was a 5th century Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known sometimes as the Apostle of Ireland, he was the founder of Christianity in that country.

Americans celebrate St Patrick’s Day, March 17th. This date was chosen as it was thought to be the day of his death. Americans seem to mark the day with even more enthusiasm than in Ireland. Anything and everything that can be coloured green, is. The water in the fountain at the White House is dyed green. Green beer is served in many bars. In Syracuse the traffic lights show green at the top as the most important colour. Sports teams wear green strip, regardless of their normal club colours. People in New Orleans make an Irish stew with cabbages to give it a green hue. The largest manifestation of this is, the entire river on which Chicago stands is dyed green.

Born in England into a Romanised family, his father, Calpurnius was a minor local official and his mother was Conchessa. His name at birth seems to have been Maewyn Succat. He was captured by Irish pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave. During his six years as a slave he worked with animals before escaping and returning home to England. After becoming a priest he went to Ireland. In his preaching he used the shamrock as an analogy for the Holy Trinity. Patrick often used traditional rituals to illustrate his Christian beliefs. Bonfires were lit at Easter, as the Irish honoured their gods with fire. He also imposed the sun onto the cross making the Celtic Cross as his symbol of Christianity in Ireland. The legend that he drove all the snakes into the sea is disproved as it appears that, Ireland never did have any snakes as they were unable to return after the Ice Age.

St David’s life is in many respects similar to St Patrick’s. Both were alive at much the same period and brought Christianity to their respective countries. It is said that David’s birth was foretold to Patrick by an angel thirty

years before David was born. Known in Wales as Dewi Sant, David was born during a violent thunderstorm. He was the son of St Non, a respected nun and grandson of the King of Ceredigion. He started teaching and preaching all over Wales and made a reputation such as his fellow monks elected him Primate of the region. He founded a strict Monastic Rule. Animals were not used as labourers. The monks themselves pulled the ploughs, “everyman is his own ox.” They only ate bread and herbs and drank only water. The monks were silent at all times except at prayer and in an emergency. The symbol of the leek was chosen because a decisive battle took place in a field of leeks and David told his men to put a leek in their caps so they could be easily recognised. The nickname for Welshmen comes from a corruption of Dafydd, the Welsh for David.

Among David’s miracles is that while preaching to a large crowd a white dove settled on his shoulder and the ground on which he stood, rose up to form a hill so that everyone could see and hear him. After his death pilgrimages were made to his shrine. The Pope declared that two pilgrimages to St David’s were the equivalent of one pilgrimage to Rome and three to Jerusalem. In Wales, St David’s Day is celebrated with festivals of singing and poetry. Leek broth is the traditional food served. March 1st is the day of his death as was the day chosen for St Patrick’s Day, the day of his death. David’s flag is a yellow cross on a black background. His tenet was to “do the little things”.

The History of the High Weald In association with the High Weald AONB we are pleased to be able to bring you the second installment of history of human habitation in the special landscape in which we live - The High Weald. Here, we take a look at this area in the Bronze Age. (please note that the High AONB hold the copyright for this material).

THE BRONZE AGE ALONG THE WEALD FOREST RIDGE Bronze age

Produced by the High Weald AONB Partnership

Illustrator Alan Marshall

The Bronze Age spans the period 2300-800BC and is defined by the first use of metallic implements and jewellery. The first metals introduced to this country were copper and gold, and the widespread availability of metal tools was gradual, as demonstrated by the continued production of finely crafted flint items such as the barbed and tanged arrowhead, although

www.highweald.org

the quality of the worked flint drops off remarkably with the greater availability of metal. The effectiveness of the copper tools was improved by the addition of tin and other metals to the copper to make bronze. What do we know of the people during the Bronze Age in the Weald Forest Ridge? (the north part of the High Weald). The early Weald is often

28

regarded as an impenetrable forest, but this is far from the truth, since from Neolithic times through into the Bronze Age, woodland clearance took place along the forest ridge, providing areas for both hunting and later farming; the amount of woodland and fields may have been much as it is today. Farming was found on the lower slopes of hills, near, but not on the floodplains; wheat and barley were being grown and domesticated sheep which are like today’s Soay sheep were grazing. The land was divided into square fields with boundaries of hedges and wooden palisades (fences), ditches drained away the water. Also on these lower hill slope were more permanent settlements, mainly near springs, homes were round and made from local materials. Continues over the page. Enquiries: 01342 300152

THE HISTORY OF THE HIGH WEALD CONTINUED

The loose soil from such farming activities often filled up rivers, making them marshier and more winding. Planked boats, stuffed with moss were used to move goods to and from the coast. The trails of discarded barbed and tanged arrowheads clearly demonstrate the presence of early Bronze Age people along the Weald Forest Ridge, indicating the continued practice of hunting parties entering this area from the North. The largest trail runs from the Redhill/ Reigate area southwards onto the ridge south of Crawley and spreads along the western third of the Weald Forest Ridge. The other trail of arrowheads leads from Tunbridge Wells to the Ashdown Forest where there is another concentration of early Bronze Age activity. Many of these metal items were buried in hoards, often near water and it is not known if they were buried as a gift to the gods or for the safekeeping of the metal for use at a later date.

Barrow at Four Counties car park ©David Lea

The most visible feature in the landscape is the round barrows and the field systems that are the result of permanent farming practices. The barrow, usually the only recognisable feature in today’s landscape, has many functions; their construction shows that display is an important feature, for instance, the barrow near Lower Beeding (Money Mound) was formed from layers of turf and coloured sand. Apart from providing a dramatic focal point in the landscape, the views from the barrows can be equally spectacular; the barrow groups on the south facing slopes near Duddleswell have clear views of the South

Downs. The barrow at the Four Counties car park on a high point in the Ashdown Forest, not only has views of the South Downs but also striking views of the North Downs. Many barrows are located close to water sources, including those in the Ashdown Forest, which may indicate a ritual significance. A change to burial practices occurred around 1400BC, when cremation became the primary funerary practice, with the ashes being contained in either a bag or ceramic urn and then interred in cemeteries, which have left no visible marker on the landscape. Routeways were developed along the area’s east to west ridge-tops and may have been trade routes to the continent. There are established tracks between large settlements and barrows. Towards the end of this time period the climate began to worsen. The metalwork found along the Weald Forest Ridge Continues over the page.

THE HISTORY OF THE HIGH WEALD CONTINUED

comprises almost exclusively of bronze axe heads, their age range spanning the entire period. The majority of the axes came from around the two areas mentioned above, from Horsham to Handcross and the Ashdown Forest including Crowborough. Around Handcross two hoards of bronze metal were discovered, one of which contained bracelets of a type (Sussex Loops) believed to have been produced near Brighton, together with a further example having been found on the North Downs; this would seem to indicate that Handcross formed a transit point for communication across the Weald. Examples of these finds found along the Weald Forest Ridge are on display in the Tunbridge Wells Museum and the Lewes Museum. By David Lea. Produced as part of the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Scheme’s Historic Environment Awareness Project.

HORSE THERAPY MAKES HORSE SENSE towards BHS exams and is considering a career with horses. ‘Adam said to me that working with the horses turns his frown upside down” said his mother, Wendy Heasman. ‘The Adam I knew before RDA would not have had the confidence and passion to do this’, she enthuses.

The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is approaching its 50th anniversary and is going from strength to strength in providing new dimensions to restricted lives. In the Ashdown Forest area there are 3 vibrant and established groups (part of a total of 35 across the South East Region) that cater for young and old in a variety of disciplines including riding, carriage driving, show jumping, dressage, endurance and even western style. At the Ashdown Forest Group, equine therapy brings confidence, smiles and laughter to children who also participate in stable management, looking after ponies including grooming and many other factors of horsemanship through fun, educational games. Recently,

Eridge Group recently had to move from their lovely facilities near Hartfield but found an exceptional replacement venue at Chelwood Equestrian in the heart of the forest to kick off the new school year. Everyone’s really happy and grateful to owner Rasshied Din for making them so welcome.

the group has also gone looking for sponsorship and had the good fortune to tie up with a local firm called Pure Washrooms, which has agreed to help with the costs of getting the participants into the show ring. And in another first, his positive experience at Ashdown Forest Group led one participant to swap his school classroom for the stable yard. Like many 14 year olds, Adam Heasman doesn’t particularly like school, but his autism doesn’t help him embrace the rigid school setting either. However, thanks to a pioneering move by East Sussex County Council, Adam is being given the opportunity to visit the stables on a day-release programme from school. At the stables he has done so well that he is being trained

Just up the road from Ashdown Forest, East Park RDA at Whitechapel has had four decades of providing riding to children, catering during term time for some 48 riders over eight sessions from local schools. Funds to provide all this took a muchneeded boost this year when the group’s patron, Dame Judi Dench, accepted a cheque from Copthorne Golf Club for more than £10,000. Dame Judi said “Everyone who’s worked with the RDA will know how wonderful it is and this donation will make such an important difference to the East Park Group – it’s simply amazing to see the Continues over the page.
