Roofing & repairs

Flat roofing Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Index: Support Local Business

Dear Residents, Welcome to the next issue of Ashdown Forest Living. There is so much going on in the next few weeks from the first ever Hartfield Storyfest to numerous Jubilee celebrations that we’ve extended our What’s On to accomodate. We’re really pleased to be able to bring you a Forest Walk (in association with the Forest Centre) for those days when you just have to get out to enjoy the gorgeous countryside! Up at Broadwater they’ve bought ponies in to help bring the landscape back to it’s former state, see our article to find out more. Please get in touch with us with any feedback, community & local history news, etc. We’re also interested in photos of the beautiful countryside in this area for publishing. Have a good May.

Walk: The Southern Slopes and the Airman’s Grave Length: 2.0 miles / 3.25km

With Thanks to the Ashdown Forest Centre and Conservators for allowing us to reproduce their walk leaflet (edited version below). There are other walk leaflets available at the Forest Centre. Have you or the kids got cabin-fever? Why not get out and about with family, friends (or by yourself even) and take advantage of the wonderful Ashdown Forest views with this walk. 1. From Hollies walk past the information board

and head downhill and due south (away from the road) on a clear wide grassy track. Head to the left side of the patch of woodland (mainly oak and birch). Passing the woodland, the track continues to descend gently and views south open up ahead. The views stretch over the Low Weald to, on a fine day, the panorama of the South Downs around Firle Beacon some 25km (16 miles) away. Heath spotted orchids

The Airman’s Grave

The stream sometimes runs a dark rusty colour. This denotes the presence of the iron that was the basis of a major Forest – and High Weald - industry for nearly 2000 years. Woodland on this part of the Forest was heavily exploited to fuel the furnaces at nearby Buxted that, in 1543, produced Britain’s first cast iron cannon. The industry survived in the Weald until 1824 when the last furnace closed. The name of Boringwheel Mill Farm on private land about 1km to the southwest describes the boring wheel that was used to drill out the solid cast cannon barrel to the right calibre or bore. 4. Turn right and cross the bridge over the

From spring to autumn, sheep and cattle graze the area around you. You are walking through heathland, the most characteristic habitat of the Forest. The 1500 hectares of it here are the largest extent in South East England. Careful searches will find the round-leaved sundew. It obtains nutrients from insects caught by long sticky glands on the leaves. In folklore, the sundew had a reputation for preserving long life and acting as an aphrodisiac! 2. park, parallel with the roadway and with Camp Hill Clump in front of you on the horizon. Camp Hill Clump was first planted in 1825. It’s name probably derives from a military camp nearby in July 1793. More Forest clumps can be encountered on other walks in the series.

Despite it’s name, no one is buried here. It is a memorial to six young men, the crew of a Wellington bomber who were all killed when it crashed here on 31 July 1941. Annual remembrance services are still held here. 3. From the Airman’s Grave continue in the

Petits Pots de crème Vanilla beans have called ‘the pastry cook’s truffles’. Their haunting, exotic flavour is quite without equal. Don’t use essence or extract in their place. To make a chocolate version of the pots de crème, add 1 tsp of cocoa powder and 4 tbl spoons of melted dark chocolate.

This is a very simple, tasty recipe.

Method Recipe by Chef

Dean Samsudin

1. Pre-heat oven to 140C (275F/Gas Mark 1)

at the Brambletye Hotel

2. Put milk in a saucepan. Split the vanilla pod in two, scrape out seeds and add seeds and scraped pod to milk.

Ingredients

3. Bring the milk just to the boil, remove and allow to stand for 20 minutes to infuse.

400ml (14 floz) Milk 2 Vanilla Pods 3 Egg Yolks 1 Egg 80g (2 ¾ oz) Caster Sugar

4. Mix together the egg yolks, egg and sugar. Strain milk over the egg mixture and discard vanilla pod. Stir well, skim off any foam. 5. Ladle mixture into 4 125ml ramekins and place in a roasting tin. Pour enough hot water into tin to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. 6. Bake for 30 minutes or until custards are firm to touch. Cool, then refrigerate.

Crippled Gardener Returns To Work

After Curing Back Pain Not being able to work did not feel like an option for Margaret*and it was particularly disheartening for her as this was due to medical reasons. Her back was in so much pain that at times she even needed to use crutches to move herself around. Being a full-time gardener didn’t help the situation with all the bending, pulling and lifting only aggravating things. “I will have to give this up,” she sadly concluded and faced a life of very much being dependant on others to help her out of bed and do the most menial tasks she had previously taken for granted. Being a very determined and independent person had brought Margaret far in her life and she had not needed to rely on anyone in the past, so the thought of giving up work was extremely hard to face but the reality was she simply could no longer cope. That was just 2 years ago. Today she walks without a stick, does a full days work and feels 10 years younger. She never gave up work in the end and has been pain-free for 15 months. “It seems like I never had this problem to start with. My back no longer gives me any gyp!” she says as a testimonial to the treatment she received. Without using any medication or painkillers, or any risky surgery, Margaret was able to return to her normal way

of life in the garden by allowing her body to heal itself. She was fortunate enough to meet a chiropractor from Family Chiropractic Sussex, in East Grinstead, who carefully examined her to locate the underlying problem of her aches and pains. By following the chiropractor’s advice and treatment program, the underlying condition was addressed and her body was able to heal itself and the painful symptoms disappeared. “Getting a thorough examination and correct diagnosis with the help of x-rays was essential to my results,” says Margaret, “I am so grateful to be able to continue with my life as normal.” You can call for a no obligation chat to find out if they can help you too, from a niggly, annoying pain/ache to a long-term condition. Call Family Chiropractic Sussex on: 01342 315 298 and speak to Peter (for more info see ad below). *Name Changed

100 years in the making … 1912 is probably best known as the year the Titanic sank but for Burrswood Hospital in Groombridge this was the start of the long process of establishing it into the renowned place of healing that it is today. The story starts with it’s founder, Dorothy Kerin, who was born in South East London in 1889. In 1902 her father died and the family faced increasing poverty. For Dorothy this was the beginning of long years of intractable sickness leading to tubercular meningitis and peritonitis. On February 18th 1912 she lay dying with her family gathered around her death bed; her doctor having said Dorothy wouldn’t survive the night. Late in the evening Dorothy suddenly sat up

declaring that she was well (despite spending most of the previous two weeks in a coma) and insisted on getting out of bed. Next morning, Dorothy’s doctor, an eminent practitioner and surgeon, had no explanation. He was almost unbelieving at what he witnessed saying to a reporter, ‘had I read about it I certainly should not have believed it’. Subsequent medical tests revealed no trace of the lesions and symptoms associated with her illness. It was a fully documented, miraculous cure and, as the news of Dorothy’s healing spread, she became an overnight celebrity. Dorothy subsequently discovered her life’s mission was to “heal the sick, comfort the sorrowing and give

faith to the faithless”. In the years following she acquired six properties for this purpose and adopted nine war orphans. In 1929 she opened her first Home of Healing in a small house in Ealing. Further houses were added, until in 1946 she moved to Speldhurst in Kent. In 1948 Dorothy acquired the estate of Burrswood in Groombridge, a place that would be her home for the rest of her life, and where her work still goes on today. Burrswood will be displaying of some the great many pieces of archive material detailing it’s fascinating story and holding events to celebrate this centenary. Five Exmoor ponies will be spending their summer at the RSPB’s Broadwater Warren nature reserve (near Groombridge) to help restore it to Heathland which has been lost over the last 60 years. We ask:

Is Broadwater going to become like Ashdown Forest? Here is what Steve Wheatley, RSPB Site manager said in reply: ‘Both Ashdown and Broadwater are parts of the same Weald Forest Ridge, with very similar geology and soils. They would once have been part of the same vast forest. Now they are considered two of the four forests of the High Weald Ridge. ‘Broadwater Warren is being restored to a heathland and woodland mix. The proportions will be around 60% heathland and 40% woodland, similar to Ashdown Forest. We certainly hope it will attract much of the same fauna and also act as a stepping stone within the High Weald for species to move further around the landscape.

ponies break up dense undergrowth by bulldozing their way through. They keep grasses very short, but allow the heather to flourish. They only lightly nibble gorse and birch.

‘The ponies will contribute towards this. There are already members of the same herd grazing at Pippingford, Old Lodge Nature Reserve and the Old Radio Station (Kingstanding), so we can expect to see similar effects across all these sites. The

‘There will continue to be many similarities between Broadwater Warren and Ashdown Forest (and also the other Weald Ridge forests of Tilgate and St.Leonards) but they will always retain their own unique character. Each forest is carefully managed in different ways according to the local specifics, demands, threats, and opportunities. At Broadwater the RSPB keep it’s focus on managing for wildlife and for people to experience and enjoy the wildlife’.

Steve Wheatley

Wordplay A Leading American paper published the winning submissions to a contest it ran in which readers were asked to supply alternate meanings for common words. 1. Remove mineral deposits from your shower head: cover the head with a big sandwich bag filled with 50g bicarb soda and 200ml vinegar. Leave for an hour. Remove bag and turn on shower to wash remaining debris. It is best to add vinegar to bicarb soda once the head is already in the bag (the chemical reaction will help the cleaning process). 2. Clean heavy-duty grease/oil: Instead of using harsh chemicals to clean off grease, try using bath oil. Rub it in and then wash hands in warm, soapy water. 3. Attract butterflies & birds into the garden: put some overripe bananas (as well as other fruit such as mangoes, papayas, etc.) on a raised platform, punch in some holes. It will also attract bees and wasps so keep higher up and not directly next to house. 18 • May 2012 • Ashdown Forest Living

Pauline Grant in years gone by

Sussex Horse Rescue Trust 1964 – Present By Wendy Gundry

Sussex Horse Rescue Trust, a member of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC), exists to rescue neglected, abused and unwanted equines. Some suffer horrendous cruelty or neglect through ignorance and others are cast out because illness or injury made them un-rideable. Unwanted children’s ponies let loose onto main roads, animals bought on a whim without any thought as to their needs or the costs involved. Indiscriminate breeding for financial gain, too many animals and not enough caring, knowledgeable homes. We rescue, rehabilitate and, where possible, re-home our rescued animals. Sussex Horse Rescue never sells an animal and any equine loaned out remains in our ownership. In addition to providing sanctuary we continually strive to promote animal welfare by producing free

advice sheets to help those caring for their own equine to do so to the best of their ability. The Trust, a registered charity, was founded in 1964 by Mrs Felicity Facer with Pauline Grant taking on the running of the charity. Pauline had previously worked for two vets who were investigating the treatment of horses in transport – the results stunned her into action. The Trust started in Bolney, East Sussex using borrowed grazing but the need for sanctuary was so great it soon began to outgrow the acreage available. New premises were needed if the Trust was to continue with it’s work. In order to raise enough sufficient money Pauline sold her own home and with the help of fundraising managed to raise sufficient money (£200,000). So in the summer of 1988 the Trust moved to Heron Farm at Horsebridge Common,

Steyning. The property came with sufficient land but no house - Pauline and her two sons had to live in a mobile home to provide sanctuary for the 130 horses then in the care of the Trust. In 1994 the Trust had to move again to provide more acreage and outbuildings to accommodate our ever increasing equine family. The property, though ideal in size (some 162 acres) had been badly neglected for a number of years and much time, effort and money has been spent clearing up and renovating buildings to create a safe, comfortable environment. We believe that every horse, pony and donkey has the right to be part of a loving family where it will be cared for to the end of it natural life. Therefore all potential loan homes are rigorously inspected and, if placed, the

loaned animal is regularly checked. Sometimes people take on an animal with all good intentions but without any understanding of the costs or commitment involved. A Shetland pony came to us in the back of its owner’s car when having a pet in the garden became too much for her and we were asked if we would take him as he was very lonely on his own. Receiving animals is not always an easy task; often it is as a result of a phone call from a concerned person. Sometimes we cannot remove the animal immediately and have to arrange for constant monitoring whilst we follow the correct processes. Often we have to purchase the animal to enable us to bring it into sanctuary, which we will do if we feel it’s at risk. We also receive phone calls, day or night, from the police asking us to pick up an animal that is loose on the road. Most of the time the animal is re-claimed by its owner a few days after, but with no recompense for the expenses incurred. Unfortunately the need for this kind of sanctuary continues to grow and there are very few around. We rely solely on the generosity of our supporters and the efforts of our fundraisers – we are not entitled to any kind of lottery or similar grants. AN EXAMPLE OF HOW EACH AND EVERY DONATION CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE £15 – buys pony nuts to feed a pony for 1 week £20 – buys a horse mix to feed a horse for 1 week £50 – buys a stable rug for a pony £70 – buys hay to feed a donkey for 1 month £150 – provides bedding for a horse for 1 month £2500 – would provide a field shelter In addition to providing a home for our equines we also have a menagerie of other animals which have been brought to us over time in need of sanctuary. Amongst our other residents we have had llamas, a cow, goats, pot-bellied pigs, peacocks, chicken, turkeys, geese and various wildfowl. Visitors enjoy seeing the variety of animals when they visit on our Open Days – Sundays 11 am - 4 pm from Easter until the second Saturday in September. SOMETHING FULFILLING & FUN “WE SERVE” – this is the Lions International Slogan. As part of the largest service organisation in the world, we in Crowborough Lions Club, “serve” our local community. This extends to about a 6 mile radius around Crowborough, including Hartfield, Chelwood Gate and Groombridge. As a dedicated team of 30 members (mixed gender) we work tirelessly to raise funds, in order to help those less fortunate than ourselves in our community. This done by various means, including our weekly Saturday Bookstall, our annual Darts Marathon, our annual Easter Egg raffle, the ever favourite Xmas Carols, as well as attending several local fetes during the summer. As a consequence of all this activity, we are able to help the old and young alike. This includes the renown “Old Folkes Xmas Party” where we wine, dine and entertain around 100 elderly. The underprivileged young are not neglected, with our “Wish List”, a popular method of giving a young person something, that would otherwise be out of his/her reach including: a trip to a Premiership Football Match, a day out at Chessington, part payment towards a trip or holiday, as well as supplying items for use in the home or school. So, as you can see, we Lions are all kept pretty busy. However, that does not stop us having our own enjoyable Social scene, with monthly activities ranging from Walks, Theatre Trips, Quiz Nights, Safari Suppers, to mention but a few. We will be holding a “Drinks and Nibbles” open evening on Tuesday 15th May at All Saints Church Hall on Chapel Green from 6:30 – 9pm for those who are interested in finding out more. You are cordially invited to come along! It’s non obligatory! it would be nice to have an idea of numbers for catering purposes, please contact Dave Brown on 01892 655530 (dgjb@btinternet.com). Of course if you just want to turn up on the night, that will be fine with us!

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Gardening Tips for MAY Article by Michael Dongray,

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Fruit

Remove surplus raspberry shoots, leaving only the strongest and give plants a good mulch. Spray tree and soft fruit against pest and diseases. Be careful not to spray on open blooms, as pollinating insects may be present.

Vegetables MMain crop potatoes not yet planted must be put in as soon as possible. Early potatoes may be “earthed up”. Continue to make sowings of Lettuce, Radish, Beet, Carrots. Runner and French Beans may be sown, along with Spinach, Swede and later in the month, Sweetcorn. Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage and Celery plants may be planted out when they have been “hardened off”.

Greenhouse More ventilation and more frequent watering will be needed on hot sunny days. Tomatoes making new growth need to be securely supported, any side shoots appearing need to be removed as soon as they appear except bush varieties.

Lawns

If weeds are present then use a combined weed and feed. Seeding bare patches can also be carried out. Plum and cherry trees can be pruned now the threat of getting silver leaf disease has gone.

Roses Fertilise and spray roses for pest and disease.

What are all those bumps and hollows which cover the Forest? Archaeologists and film crew have woven thousands of years of Forest history into an eight minute film. Use of the Forest as a deer park, by the military, for burial, for rural industry and for travel, has created the bumps and hollows you see today as archaeological remains. The film can be seen at www.ashdownforest.org/enjoy/ history.php and will also be shown in the Forest Centre exhibition. A full survey of the archaeology of the Forest was completed recently, with the help of a technique known as LiDAR. The images produced by LiDAR strip away vegetation and reveal the ground surface. The survey uncovered hundreds of new archaeological sites, which the film reveals. You can see LiDAR images at www.highweald.org/lookafter/archaeology/lidar-images.html An exciting project to map the surviving extent of the Forest’s ancient Pale is also underway. The Pale is the bank and ditch built to enclose the area in the medieval period. We’ll bring you news of this in future issues. The film and other projects were undertaken as part of the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Scheme, and were funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, High Weald AONB unit & the Conservators. The main aims of the Scheme are to explore and understand the historic landscape of the Weald Forest Ridge, which stretches from Horsham to Tonbridge, with Ashdown Forest at its heart. 26 • May 2012 • Ashdown Forest Living

Is your weight affecting your health? Weight problems are often triggered by puberty, pregnancy, menopause or simply ageing. In addition medication, stress, change in lifestyle, bad eating or drinking habits can also play a major part with weight problems. The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme addresses these issues resulting in clients losing weight at a rate which is very motivating. Key points of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme • Expected average weight loss of clients, 10-14lbs a month • Easy to follow • No pills, diet shakes etc. • One-to-one personalised support The most popular aspects of the programme are the quick weight loss, easy to stick to (clients constantly remark that they don’t feel hungry or have cravings) and the one-to-one support which is available 7 days a week.

Pam lost 4 stone, Andrew lost 2 stone “No previous diets

had ever worked – I

have an under-active thyroid, which didn’t

help. Rachel encouraged us all the way and her advice and suggestions were really easy to

follow – we didn’t find ourselves hungry or getting cravings.

The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme very quickly re-educated our diets but it wasn’t at all difficult to keep to. One happy side effect was Andrew‘s indigestion problems disappearing, while my blood pressure improved. We reached our target weights in less than five months but far more than that has been the way it has changed our lives and how we feel about ourselves. A very big personal thank you to Rachel for turning us around.”
