Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

“Refreshingly different”

The Oasis nature reserve, gardens, and education centre has often been described by visitors as “refreshingly different”. Hidden within beautiful surroundings near West Hoathly, halfway between Haywards Heath and East Grinstead, the Oasis has also been described as “one of Sussex’s best kept secrets”. This quiet seclusion is aided by the fact that the Oasis is only accessible to the public on four open days each year, with places needing to be booked well in advance to avoid disappointment. It is owned and managed by ‘The Wildlife For All Trust’. Iain Scott, the director, says “The Oasis is to nature reserves what Glyndebourne is to opera although I’m more of a Status Quo fan myself to be honest!”.

think that you’re inside an aviary. “We do ‘no-nonsense’ wildlife gardening and it really works”, Iain adds. Oasis Woods is semi-natural ancient woodland, a reminder of what England used to look like in times gone past. Mass displays of bluebells lead downwards through old oak and ash trees, with herds of wild deer often seen on open days, to old hornbeams and an unpolluted stream inhabited with trout and visited by kingfishers. Woodpeckers and owls are heard many times daily. Captive-bred groups of meerkats (always popular) and bat-eared

foxes can be seen close-up in large naturalised enclosures. These link with Wildlife For All’s work in South Africa, where it also has two nature reserves. Komsberg Wilderness Nature Reserve is the biggest at 30,700 acres - an example of a genuine conservation success story made possible by years of hard work and commitment. Anyone wishing to visit The Oasis can email Becky at wildlifeforall@hotmail.com for an e-leaflet which has full details of the 2015 open days. See www. wildlifeforall.org for more about The Oasis and the work of The Wildlife For All Trust.

The Oasis Gardens provide a stunning introduction for visitors. “We have one of the best collections of perennials anywhere,” says Becky, head gardener, “and my high standards mean that we only have the best of the best plants.” On a sunny day, there are butterflies everywhere - and the bird song can make you • May 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

Trail Blazers The inaugural Weald Challenge Trail Races organised by Trail Running Sussex kicked off to a very successful start in 2014. This year is lining up to be even more popular. There are three races which all start and finish in the village of Chiddingly. Two of the races encompass the spectacular views from the open heathland of the Ashdown Forest. Here is a Q&A with one of the event founders Stuart Mills: How did ‘Trail Running Sussex’ get started? What is the background? We, that is me, my wife Frances and our two sons Rob and Chris, moved to this area in 2002, and we have enjoyed the tremendous countryside through walking and running along the many footpaths and bridleways. I guess it was around 2011 after I had got into ultra-trail running around the UK, when I realised that although the Lakes District and the Peaks District were pretty impressive, what I was regularly experiencing on my off-road runs within Sussex was nearly equally impressive, although without the large hills. It was when discussing this with running partner Kevin, that it dawned on us that perhaps many runners weren’t aware of the tremendously scenic and varied landscapes of Sussex, and that they didn’t need to travel hundreds of miles north to experience great off-road running. So that was how in 2012 Trail Running Sussex was started, with the aim to “Share with like-minded people the scenic inspiring trails that are in abundance within the county of Sussex”, which for many are right, “On Their Doorstep!”.

Your family are very much involved, how did that happen and what are their thoughts about it? Right from the start of Trail Running Sussex my family was involved. The first task was to set up the website, so my two boys took a few photos of the countryside and also helped design the Trail Running Sussex logo. The original aim was to organise running camps and to provide guided runs. The boys would take photos of the runners on the running camps and guided runs, and Frances would use her nutrition expertise to help ‘fuel’ the runners with quality organic homemade meals and snacks. The idea to organise running races arose following the completion of an awesome 21 mile training run from our village of East Hoathly that I did back in 2012. I then realised that if I had started my run at the school sports hall at Chiddingly, which was 2.5 miles away, the total distance would be 26 miles, and so the Weald Challenge Trail Marathon was born! I had been race director for the successful Kings Head Canter 5km road race which takes place in our village for the previous nine years, so I had some experience of race organising and was a UK Athletics Level 2 Official. Although organising a trail marathon was a huge undertaking, with the support of my family, the decision was made to ‘go for it’ and so the inaugural Weald Challenge Trail Races, consisting of a half marathon, a marathon, and a 50km ultra, took place in May 2014. How did the inaugural races go and what do you hope for this year? The inaugural Weald Challenge Trail Races, which were jointly organised with Uckfield Runners, took place in May 2014 and were a huge success. There was a total of 311 runners across the three race distances, and the feedback received was amazing. Not only did the very scenic but challenging race

there is a thought about combining the two 50km ultra-trail routes, and to put on a third race titled the “High Weald Hundred Ultra Tour” which would be one hundred kilometres in length. Now that would be an extra special challenge! In relation to the Ashdown Forest itself, how can these events be of benefit?

routes get praise, but also the extremely friendly supportive atmosphere evident throughout the day, which was very pleasing to hear as this was the main aim of putting on the event, with there being just one rule: “Everyone involved must have an enjoyable experience!” including the runners, the volunteers at the drink stations, the other users of the footpaths and bridleways, and the residents of the villages the routes pass through. So there was no need to specify don’t cut corners, don’t drop litter, to display courtesy to others, etc. In addition the complimentary homemade organic cakes made by Frances, served with fresh filter coffee were so well appreciated by the runners upon finishing, as were the excellent photos of the runners taken by Rob and Chris, which have since featured on a number of websites and magazines including Sussex Life and Women’s Running.

The routes for the marathon and ultra-trail races of both the Weald Challenge and the High Weald Challenge Trail Races take in the spectacular views from the open heathland of the Ashdown Forest, and for the High Weald Challenge runners will also cross the famous Pooh Sticks Bridge from Winnie the Pooh fame. Although local residents of Sussex are probably aware of the natural beauty of the Ashdown Forest, for runners from further afield, who may be oblivious to the amazing landscape of the forest, one of the benefits from the races is to increase people’s awareness of its natural qualities, so that they are also able to enjoy the pleasures of walking or running within the Ashdown Forest. Also as part of our shared responsibility to help preserve the natural special qualities of the area, in addition to being sensitive to the needs of wildlife, farmers, etc. Trail Running Sussex donates a small portion of every race entry fee, to the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

This year there has been quite an increase in interest in the Weald Challenge Trail Races which take place on the Sunday 24th May, with the routes following the Wealdway and Vanguard Way. As of the start of April there are over four hundred entries and it is likely that the entry limit of 525 runners will be reached. We hope that there will again be excellent feedback from everyone involved, with everyone having an enjoyable day. Looking ahead, how do you hope it will grow into the future? In terms of the Weald Challenge Trail Races we don’t anticipate there being any growth, as we think an entry limit of 525 runners is about right, as with more runners it could get a bit congested at the start/finish area. However, Trail Running Sussex has grown with a second event for 2015: the inaugural Groombridge Place High Weald Challenge Trail Races will take place later this year on the 27th of September. This new event adopts the same successful formula of having three race distances; half marathon, marathon and 50km ultra. Although, only at the initial stages, 10 • May 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

Nettles...Naturally

Not only is it packed with amino acids (sixteen to be exact) it is also high in protein; not your average vegetable. Historically in Northern Europe, the fibre from the stems of nettles was woven into “linen”. In fact in Scotland, a material made from nettle fibres was used right up to the seventeenth century, and was claimed to be one of the most durable of fabrics. Nettle fibre was used by both Europeans and Native Americans to make strong ropes and fishing nets. Although cotton is easier to harvest and spin, nettle fibre is both softer and more hard wearing.

Spring is definitely here and what a spring it has been so far. My bees are returning day in day out with their pollen sacks filled and the colony is steadily growing. It’s not hard to notice that the hedgerows and gardens are starting to burst forth with new shoots and the scenery is daily changing. So at this time of year number one on my foraging list is the stinging nettle, Urtica dioica. This humble plant is a mainstay in my larder and medicine cabinet and it is the perfect time to start picking it. Later as the season turns to summer and the plant goes to flower, the lower leaves develop a crystal which irritates both the kidneys and the urinary tract. Unfortunately we live in a world that is obsessed with the latest fad or trend. “Superfoods” have become a national and media obsession. It seems that everyone is searching for the next vegetable grown by a small tribe on the side of some far and distant mountain that will be the saviour of all our dietary needs. Well I’ll let you into a little secret, look no further than the end of your garden or the closest hedgerow. Nettles are not only abundant, local and sustainable, they are packed full of goodness. They are the equivelant of spinach on steroids. They are a powerhouse of a vegetable containing: • Vitamin A, C, E, F, K, P • Vitamin B- complexes as well as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, B-6 all of which are found in high levels and act as antioxidants. • Zinc, Iron, Magnesium, Copper and Selenium

Nettles have been used medicinally for over two thousand years. Uses historically have been to stop all kinds of internal and external bleeding. Nettle tea has been used to help nursing mothers produce milk and it also stimulates the digestive glands of the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder. Applied externally, nettle tea can be used as a rinse to help strengthen hair and treat dandruff. Nettles provide excellent support for complex metabolic disorders especially when connective tissue is involved. Allergies, arthritis and eczema respond extremely well to treatment with nettles. It is a soothing medicine for urinary irritation and has the ability to soften and dissolve hard deposits like kidney or bladder stones. It is a wonderful blood tonic and helps with treating a number of menstrual conditions, being both supportive and tonifying, due to its ability to increase red blood cells. It is incredibly versatile as a vegetable and only requires crushing or heating in order to nullify the sting, thus allowing you to use it to make a great wild pesto sauce. Nettle soup is a wonderful way to utilise this vegetable as an edible and a medicinal at the same time. NB: Remember to always consult an expert when foraging and self medicating. Always ID plants 100% before consuming and seek a professionals advice. Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide and diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.

Local History Notes

Place Names by Dorothy Hatswell

Twyford At the East Grinstead Museum I was recently asked ”What does the suffix ‘tye’ mean?” I am ashamed to say that I had no idea. Afterwards I looked it up and found that it indicates land used for grazing. So at place names such as “Herontye” the grazing was near a lake and at “Brambletye” (near Forest Row) blackberries were in abundance, for example. This set me thinking that some other suffixes that I did know about might be unknown to some readers. These words are usually local and particular to one county or even smaller areas. Another common place name ending in this area is “lye”. This means a clearing in a wooded area. Many such clearings 14 • May 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

or assarts (a piece of land converted from forest to arable use) occur around Ashdown Forest. People would make an open space where they could grow crops, sometimes on a small scale: fruit and vegetables for their own consumption, sometimes on a larger scale for the cultivation of cereal crops. West Hoathly means a clearing in the heath, the West to distinguish it in more recent times from East Hoathly. The prefix “Ash” usually means that the ash tree grew in large numbers in the area. In other places it might indicate that the area had been use for smelting iron. However, that use seems to be limited to field names rather than entire villages or hamlets.

The village of “Ashurst Wood”, just north of Forest Row, has in effect, “wood” twice in its name as “hurst” is a name for a wood in any case. There is a house on the Lewes Road named Brockhurst, this is another example. Brock is the old name for a badger. Woods have several names, “ley” as in the village of Crawley Down indicates that this wood was home to many crows, although it is generally rooks who form colonies rather than crows who tend to be more solitary. Yet another name for wood is “shaw” but this only seems to appear in individual small areas of woodland and not give rise to names for settlements. “Down” is an interesting word. Downs are really “Ups” or hills. The name

comes from the Old English word for hill; “dun”. Names such as Sharpthorne are fairly self-evident. The thorn in question could be hawthorne but in this whole area the gorse is abundant. The Latin for gorse is planta genet, which gave its name to the Plantagenet dynasty of English monarchs. It was said that a Plantagenet monarch would rule over England as long as there was gorse in bloom somewhere in the country. Whether this superstition was the cause of Richard III’s death on Bosworth Field is unlikely, but August is a month when the gorse blossom is less likely to be seen... “Ford” is an obvious one and is fairly widely used over the whole country Oxford being, perhaps, the best known example of its use. Around here there are not many ”fords”, possibly because this area is a watershed - an area or region drained by a river or river system. The source of the river Medway, flowing south and the river Mole and the river Wey flowing north, all arise within a few miles of the Ashdown Forest

Gravetye Manor showing the land behind it cleared for grazing and the forest beyond

area. We do not, therefore, have any large rivers that we need to “ford” (cross). However, there is one on the forest and that is at Twyford, so called because there are two ways of crossing the stream. Ashdown Forest was at one time enclosed because it was the hunting ground of kings. To be able to enter and leave it, nearly forty gates were placed in the fence or “pale” around it. “Hatch” is another name for gate. Coleman’s Hatch and Chuck Hatch are examples of this. On

the forest are several instances of the word ghyll or gill. This refers to a small stream or brook often in a ravine. The most famous one is Ghylls Lap which features in the Winnie-the-Pooh stories by A.A. Milne, set on the forest near Hartfield. The Milnes lived at Cotchford Farm, another example of a ford in the area. By the time of Christopher Robin the stream had been bridged and it was from this bridge that the game of Pooh Sticks was, and still is, played.

A WALK BEYOND THE PALE 2.5 miles / 3.8 km

With Thanks to the Ashdown Forest Centre and Conservators for allowing us to reproduce their walk leaflet (edited version below). There are other walk leaflets available at the Forest Centre.

Start from Goat car park and, with the road facing you, walk towards the entrance. Turn right and walk along the grassy bank for about 15 metres up the road towards the cross roads to a wooden post. Pause here and look across Legsheath Lane where it joins the junction and you will see a giant redwood tree planted to mark the centenary of the Meridian Line in 1984. Turn right at the post and follow the ride that goes straight ahead between the trees. Follow the ride as it quickly emerges on to a small patch of open heath where gorse grows along the edge of the ride. You will now be walking parallel to the road on your left and at this point you will cross the Meridian Line. Once you cross a tarmac drive, continue straight ahead into the woods. Stay on the wide track all the way until you come to a T-junction. Turn right and, after a short while, the ride emerges again on to open heathland. Follow the main ride through the middle of the heath and bear right at the next junction of the rides and then the path descends into the woods. After a short distance you will pass the second Meridian giant redwood tree on your left

(as you are now crossing the Meridian Line for the second time) and continue on the path as it descends gradually downhill through the trees. At the next junction, in a woodland glade of mature beech trees, turn left. Turn right at the next path and on your left are now the remains of the old forest boundary. You may not realise that the term ‘forest’ does not mean a landscape covered with trees, but derives from the name for a royal hunting park with special powers to protect the deer within it. The historic area of the hunting forest was considerably larger than the

area within the present Ashdown Forest boundaries (which were mostly set after a large-scale sale of land at the end of the 17th century) and was enclosed by a ‘Pale’- a ditch and a bank with the ditch to the inside, with a wooden fence built on top of the bank to prevent the deer escaping. The medieval Pale (part of which is now on your left) was first referred to in records from the 13th century. Access through the Pale was by “gates” or “hatches” and some of these survive today in place names such as Chelwood Gate and Chuck Hatch. (Just along this

path, you will see a small footpath marker sign on the right, pointing to the start of a footpath opposite, that leaves the forest and takes you to Weir Wood reservoir). Continue downhill as more of the pale and possibly an old sunken cart track is revealed on your left and cross the stream (or Ghyll, which may run red due to the presence of iron deposits) at the bridge at the end of the path. Now follow the path up the hill to where it joins a cart track where you bear right and join a tarmac drive. Continue forward and follow the tarmac track all the way to the road. Cross the road taking the small sunken path diagonally opposite, which then runs along the bottom of the open heath. The narrow path eventually drops down into a hollow which is thought to be a marl pit (marl is lime-rich mud containing clay). Come out of the hollow and follow the path until it meets the ride where you turn right.

Follow the wide ride through open heath until you come to a junction. Just before a memorial stone complete with compass points (in bushes to the right of the path), take the right fork and continue across open grassy heath until you reach the road again. Cross the road and turn left along the other side of the trees and you are walking parallel to the road on your left. At the far end of the heath follow the path as it carries on into the woods and over a small stream. Now climb on the main path that shortly emerges on to open heathland again. Walk through some birch trees and emerge next to the seat just below Goat car park. A pub called the Goat once stood at the crossroads at Goat car park. The pub was an infamous destination for smugglers coming up from the coast. Tea and brandy were the main commodities smuggled during the 18th century. Piece of land named after Wakehurst Place’s loyal Gardener! A horticulturalist who’s celebrating fifty years working for Kew at Wakehurst Place is to have a piece of the Sussex High Weald named after him. Marchant’s Bank has been created at Home Farm on the sprawling Wakehurst estate to acknowledge the enormous contribution David Marchant MBE has made to the running of one of the great garden’s of Sussex. Mr Marchant has been a ‘linchpin’ in the enormous development which has taken place over the decades, which has seen the internationallyrenowned botanic garden being created as well as the biggest conservation project, the Millennium Seed Bank, take root! He said, “The parcel of land at Home Farm has been named Marchant’s Bank in my honour, this is because of my work managing the Wakehurst purse-strings over the past 27 years”, explains Mr Marchant. “I was pleased to be able pick the piece of land and I chose this particularly steep bank because it reminded me of my earlier career as the ‘farm boy’ and when I was driving a Fordson Major tractor across that slope dragging a pair of chain harrows. The tractor ran out of diesel and the farmer, Nigel Radley Smith was not best pleased when he had to come and rescue me.” Mr Marchant was born on the estate and joined his father in the employ of the last private owner, Sir Henry Price. He met his wife, a fellow horticulturalist

David Marchant MBE looking out over the new Marchant’s Bank at Ardingly

at Wakehurst and has been happily married for 45 years. “It is entirely her fault that you have to put up with me day after day”, he joked. “She is the one that ensures that I get fed, watered and clothed, that I don’t linger in the house making it untidy, or get under her feet.” At a celebration tea party Mr Marchant was presented with a gold Kew badge, an honour normally reserved for Trustees of the organisation. Marchant’s Bank has been registered with Ordnance Survey and will soon be appearing on maps. Many Congratulations to Mr Marchant!

Come Hell or High Water:

Walk the Kingdom Local resident Steve Cook will be undertaking the most daunting of challenges by walking the entire coast of the UK starting May 1st. Based on 20 miles a day and over 200 days on the road, he estimates that he will walk over 4000 miles in total. Here he explains what prompted him to take on, at 63 years of age, this most physically demanding of challenges: What made you decide to walk the entire coast of the UK, was it a hard decision to make? I wanted to help former British Martial Arts Champion Pete Dwan’s tireless charity work in the field of drug education. Pete’s mission statement is to ‘reach the kids before the dealers do’ and I decided that the best way I could do this was to do something ‘huge’ and walking the entire coast fitted the bill (a massive undertaking for a man of my age, or indeed any age) to raise awareness for Pete’s vital work. To explain, Pete gives his ‘say no to drugs’ talks to children in schools across the whole of the UK and receives a fantastic response from teachers, children and parents alike. His successful approach is taught to parents and teachers too and in my opinion this educational approach is the way forward. It was not a difficult decision to

24 • May 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

make, although to be honest it was only as I began to prepare for this walk and got as better idea of exactly what it involved that I realised I had committed myself to a massive task. This is not something I would do unless the cause was important enough to justify putting myself through this hardship. It is a chance for me to make a personal contribution to a very worthy cause and also to my country. What training have you undertook in preparation? I’ve done lots and lots and lots of walking! I did not start out as a particularly fit or energetic guy and I’m now 63 years old. But I need to walk about twenty miles every day for over two hundred days in order to get around the entire coast in a decent time so I had to build my fitness up and pretty much re-invent myself so as to stand any chance of pulling this off. I can now walk twenty miles carrying a ten kilo backpack and am confident I can do what I set out to do provided I pace myself sensibly.

What has the highlight been so far? The warmth and good wishes of so many people, the kindness of donations and the indications that the community both locally and across the nation will get behind this crusade. It has been the confirmation of what I always believed: that our country is populated by millions of good and generous people. How do you think it will all play out? I start my walk on the first of May in East Grinstead High Street, walk south to the coast, turn left at the sea and just keep walking with the sea on my right. Saying goodbye to my friends and family will be very hard but the encouragement of well-wishers will help me feel less lonely out on the road. What support and media coverage have you had so far? I’ve had good local press and done a number of radio interviews both here and in the States. Strong interest from The Liberty Beacon,

This month’s recipe is provided by Peter Bayless, Masterchef Winner 2006

Summer fruits in a Rosé Wine Jelly served with strawberry jus and clotted cream Nothing heralds summer like the arrival of summer berries and here is a dish that makes the most of their freshness, colour, flavours and beauty.

Ingredients

Enough for 12 – 14 portions Large punnet of strawberries (400g) 150g raspberries 150g blueberries 150g blackberries 100g red currants One bottle rosé wine 12 plates of gelatine 1 ½ tablespoons caster sugar For the jus Juice of one lemon Tablespoon caster sugar

Method Wash all the fruits under running water and drain thoroughly. Cut the green tops off the strawberries and halve them top to bottom. Strip the red currants from their stems using the tines of a fork. Set 250g strawberries aside and gently mix the remainder with the other washed fruits. Place the gelatine leaves in a bowl and cover with cold water. Place the sugar into a saucepan with a splash of the rosé wine and heat until the sugar has dissolved. Now add the remainder of the wine and warm through. Remove the saucepan from the heat, squeeze out the now soft gelatine and add to the wine stirring to dissolve completely. If there are some stubborn stick bits of gelatine carefully re-heat the pan while stirring, but on no account allow the mixture boil or the jelly will not set. Leave the saucepan aside until the rosé jelly has completely cooled down. Lightly oil a 12 inch terrine dish and scatter a little of the fruit into the base. Cover with liquid jelly and refrigerate until set. Repeat this process 4 times and when the final layer is set add another layer of liquid jelly to completely cover the fruits. Not only will the jelly preserve the fruits but also the solid layer of jelly will prevent your fruit jelly from collapsing when cut. Once fully set, turn out onto clingfilm and wrap it up completely. 28 • May 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

Keep the terrine in the fridge and try to minimise the time it spends out of the fridge before serving. Cut with a serrated knife removing the clingfilm just before serving. To make the strawberry jus, put the 250g saved trimmed strawberries into a metal bowl together with the sugar and lemon juice. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and place it over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Leave for 3 hours. While still hot, remove the clingfilm from the top of the bowl and pour the contents through a colander into another bowl. Do not squeeze the pulp as this will make your jus go cloudy. Discard the pulp and decant the jus into a suitable container or squeezy bottle ready for serving. The jus will keep in the fridge for over a week. To serve, place a slice of the fruit jelly in the middle of the plate, squeeze a couple of circles of jus round the outside and top with a quenelle of clotted cream. ©Peter Bayless 2015 Peter Bayless will be holding a Morroccan Evening at Perryhill Orchards (see ad on right) on Friday 22nd May which includes a 3 course meal prepared for you. The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company

The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company is coming to a ‘green’ near you this Summer as they stage various shows in the Ashdown Forest area including at Hartfield, Hadlow Down and Langton Green. Here is a Q&A with founder Peter Talbot about this very unique form of community entertainment:

a large customer base. We have a fanatical support of between 6,000 to 7,000 supporters. Keeping them enthused means producing great show after great show, otherwise the enthusiasm would wane and that would be the end of us. But we are still going after all these years. (A good sign! - editor.)

How did the Rude Mechanical company get started in the first place, what is the background and who started it?

What is the highlight of what you do?

I was a teacher and had been involved with theatre for a long time, especially youth theatre, and decided to form my own professional company. Therefore I decided to go to Italy and train at the International School of Comic Acting in Reggio Emilia. The first tour went out in 1999. We now have our own studio in Eastbourne, but we work all over Southern England. What do you think most sets you apart from other theatre companies? We are the only commedia dell’arte company in England. This form of theatre goes back to 16th Century Italy and famously has characters like Harlequin and Colombine. We don’t use the original characters but we make plays in a similar way: all the actors are musicians and all of us have white faces like clowns and use a very physical style. It feels a bit like cartoons or silent movies both of which are influences. All the plays are comedies and have good strong stories. We work in small rural communities mainly outdoors where people love storytelling. Most years we go back to the same places. There are several venues to which we’ve been every year for the last sixteen years and this will be our seventeenth year touring!

The best part is at the end of a show when the audience have clearly enjoyed themselves and are standing up clapping. We know then we have made a difference and brought something special into the community. We do these shows because we believe in the importance of the community – and when they have enjoyed themselves, we know we have succeeded. What are you plans for the future? We will continue what we do for some years yet and will be doing more winter shows in village halls. We work in theatres too in the winter, but doing more village hall shows is our main aim. For more details about their upcoming performances see: www.therudemechanicaltheatre.co.uk.

What is the most challenging part of what you do? The most challenging part is keeping the company on a financial footing. All our actors are experienced professionals on proper wages with mortgages and family to feed. We are supported much of the time by the Arts Council, but rely a lot also on donations and 30 • May 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living

Gardening in Spring planned. I grew what I thought were Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ flowers from seed, last year they didn’t flower and this year they were full of buds that gave a fairly impressive display of deep red flowers. Oh my goodness, what happened to the various subtle shades of mauve and purple that had been chosen specifically to complement the rest of the planting? – jolly good job I wasn’t aiming for a Chelsea Gold!

Exciting and inspiring ideas will be in abundance this month with the Chelsea Flower Show taking centre stage on our televisions, in magazines and newspapers. In fact some years the effect has been as daunting as it has inspirational – all the perfectly planted gardens, everything just flowering at the same time, even interesting combinations that in our own gardens are months apart.

have your daughters wedding reception in your garden in which case the pressure’s all yours! The rest of us can enjoy the many special moments when the fruits of our labour start to show off their glorious colour and we are rewarded with months of splendid blooms. Of course things in the garden don’t always work out quite as

But these mistakes are the joy of gardening, they prompt new thoughts and ideas, serendipity inspiring new combinations – be brave and plant new species, be bold with colour and structure - create your very own piece of Chelsea. Happy gardening… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer

Imagine the pressure of being the team responsible for getting all the plants to perform at their very best for a specific date in May – each and every plant having to earn its place in the garden - all we have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the show. And that is the beauty of our own gardens; we can work as hard as the mood takes us. Not for us that all the plants have to flower for a set date – unless of course you have agreed to 34 • May 2015 • Ashdown Forest Living
