Testimonial: “I just wanted to say thank you both so much for doing such a brilliant job—and for coming out so quickly to do it. I still can’t believe it’s done—I am eternally grateful and if anyone else needs some work done you guys will be at the top of the list. Fantastic—thank you again.” Louize Mason-Styrron “We have employed Allzones Roofing over the past 5 years, in this time they have re-tiled a large house built in 1916 including dormers and gables. Re-tiled a cottage roof using new tiles on one side and re using the old tiles on the other side. Removed felt from a roof on a large studio and replaced with fibre cement based tiles. Recently re-tiled a bungalow with shingle tiles (wood). All the work has been carried out with efficiency and excellent workmanship throughout. I would recommend this company.”

Dear Residents,

Whats inside this month

Welcome to the May issue. Spring should be with us by now and hopefully we can discard the thermal underwear at last! This issue seems to have taken on a ‘wildlife’ theme with two large local charity articles featuring British wildlife and African wildlife, we hope you enjoy.

Helping Our Wildlife

Of course it’s a big garden month, so we’ve more helpful hints with our gardening article. There’s been some good response recently with people and charities getting in touch with us with news stories and promotion. If there are any features or news you think we should be printing, please do let us know!

Helping Our Wildlife Trevor Weeks MBE founded the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service in 1996. Over the years it has grown into the operation it is today and he now oversees the running of the centre, just south of the Ashdown Forest area, in Whitesmith. This local charity daily carries out the difficult task of assisting the British wildlife in the beautiful area in which we live, nursing many back to health. Here we have a Q&A with Trevor about his work: What inspired you to get interested in wildlife in the first place? When did you know that this would be your vocation? In the mid 1980s I was volunteering with Eastbourne Conservation Volunteers most weekends outside of college, we occasionally found oiled Guillemots and would take them to a lady in Seaford who ran a bird hospital from her home. I started volunteering for other organisations where I could; but then one day, after struggling

to find help with a road casualty badger, I realised how little help was out there, especially at night. I started moving my passion for nature away from conservation into welfare and rescue. Becoming a hobby, I started volunteering with the Amphibian & Reptile Group doing toad patrols, setts survey work with the local badger groups, etc.

place in peoples houses back in the early 2000s. Eventually we raised enough money for a small hospital at the back of a vets practice in Hailsham, but our vets bill went through the roof as a result, so we had to move away to be more independent. In 2007 we were very pleased to move to our current site at Whitesmith on the A22 between Hailsham and Uckfield.

From its inception to its current position, what were the milestones along the way? In the early 90s having learnt to drive I found myself requested to deal with more and more casualties. In ‘96 I attended the Sea Empress Oil Spill at Millford Haven, Wales for two weeks helping to rescue, medicate and treat hundreds of oiled birds. Later that year I was encouraged to start East Sussex WRAS, a voluntary group, to help pay a huge vet bill and East Sussex Wildlife Rescue was thus born, becoming a registered charity in 2005. Originally we were primarily an ambulance service to support other charities, however the more casualties we brought in, the more they struggled to cope. We therefore initiated our own hospital work which took

Until 2010 I worked with International Animal Rescue and British Divers Marine Life Rescue based in Uckfield which saw me running training courses around the UK and Canada, teaching people how to rescue whales, dolphins and seals, including the rescue of a dolphin trapped in a harbour in Cumbria as well as a grey seal trapped in the cooling tanks of Dungeness Nuclear Power Station. Now I work on minimum wage for WRAS managing the charity. Although I get paid for 38 hours in reality I work 110 hours a week. I lost my mum to cancer back in 1993, and my wildlife work kept me going at that time; it has been the one constant in my life, and I look on WRAS as being my family as I spend so much time with the Enquiries: 01342 300152

animals, staff and volunteers. What is the hardest aspect of running this service? The hardest part is ensuring enough money is coming in to cover everything; putting casualties to sleep is never easy, but sometimes it is the kind thing to do; finding suitable release sites for foxes due to the bad press they get; and although we have an amazing group of volunteers it is difficult finding

stop unnecessary euthanisation.

The wildlife rescue industry is one of the must underfunded and underappreciated industries in the country. What has the highlight been of running this service? Being able to look back at what we achieved over the past 31 years is amazing, not because I am amazed at what I have done, but at the support the public have shown and their faith in me. Being recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2012, going to the palace to collect my medal was a once in a life time opportunity and one I was proud to take my father, step mum and partner Kathy to. What does the future hold for WRAS?

Trevor tubing a baby seal at Portsmouth delivered by ferry from Jersey

I never imagined that we would be where we are today, so I’ve no idea where the next 30 years will take us. I am already training new people who might take over from me when I’m too old to run WRAS. My dream is to have enough facilities to adequately cover the whole of East Sussex so we can

What local support have you had and what local support do you need? Our biggest source of income is monthly standing orders without which we couldn’t operate. We have had a couple of legacies which helped finish off our hospital. Additional volunteers are needed as well as release sites where we can have permanent or temporary pens for the rehabilitation of wildlife. All our pens have to be multi-purpose and they need to be at locations where people are able to help feed and monitor casualties too. We have an Amazon wish list from which people regularly donate items, some people open gardens, hold coffee mornings, sponsored events and more, which all help us to help local wildlife. If you are interested in volunteering some of your time or would like to help the charity in any other way, please call: 01825 873003. For more info see www.wildlifeambulance. org.

Lemon Meringue Pie By Andrew Wilson, Exec Head Chef at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

Sweet Pastry: Ingredients 255g plain flour 85g icing sugar 115g butter 1 whole egg Method Rub the flour, sugar and butter between your fingers until the mixture is the consistency of breadcrumbs. Press it into a dough then leave to rest in the fridge for 1 hour while you make the filling.

Lemon Curd Filling: Ingredients Zest and juice of 7 lemons 350g caster sugar 6 whole eggs 9 egg yolks 300g butter, cubed Method Heat the lemon zest and juice, sugar, eggs and egg yolks in a heavy bottomed pan. Warm until the sugar has dissolved, mixing continuously but being careful not to bring to the boil as the eggs will curdle. Whisk in the butter one piece at a time until melted, then continue to cook until thickened, stirring all the time. Remove from the heat then leave to cool.

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 4. Take the pastry out of the fridge and roll out to a few millimetres thick, then place in a 22cm loose-bottomed tart tin. Bake blind – with covered with baking paper and filled with baking beans or dry rice – for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove the baking paper and beans/rice then add the lemon curd filling. Bake for a further 8 mins then leave to cool.

Meringue:

the syrup reaches 121°C on a sugar thermometer. Pour the syrup over the meringue and keep whisking – this will be a lot easier if you have an electric whisk or stand mixer! Keep whisking until the mixture cools and the meringue has stiffened, then spoon onto the cooled tart and swirl with the back of the spoon. To finish the lemon meringue pie, use a blow torch to brown the meringue, or very carefully brown it under a grill.

Ingredients 135g egg whites (from 3-4 eggs) 1tsp cream of tartare (or 1tsp white vinegar) 250g caster sugar Method Whisk the egg whites with the cream of tartare until peaks start to form. Meanwhile, bring the sugar with a little water to the boil, until

PASSIVHAUS – A HEALTHIER HOME By Mark Elton, Director, Cowan Eco Design you read this, Cowan Eco Design will be in Darmstadt, Germany for the International Passivhaus Conference. Delegates will be coming from all over the world to get the latest information on how Passivhaus is further pushing the boundaries of energy efficient design in houses, community buildings, offices and even museums. One of the highlights will be a re-visit to the very first Passivhaus home, now 25 years old and still working as well as it ever did to provide all year round warmth and comfort for the minimum of energy input.

The big differences between a Passivhaus and a standard Regulations-compliant building are typically in five categories: the level of thermal insulation; the use of triple-glazing with energy efficient framing; the elimination of cold spots (or thermal bridges); achieving a more air tight shell; and the use of ‘heat recovery ventilation’. And what will it look like? Whatever you want – modern or traditional.

As

At the end of the day, Passivhaus is all about making a building so comfortable to be in, that the need Mark Elton to put the heating on doesn’t even occur to you! The insulation standards are set so that So what is the secret to such enduring performance? no part of the wall will ever feel cold, even when it’s Well, it isn’t really a secret – it simply needs the will below freezing outside. This includes the windows, of the client, the skill of the architect and engineer, hence the need for insulated frames and triplethe science behind Passivhaus and the craft of the glazing. It also means avoiding bits of structure that builder to come together harmoniously. connect to the outside, such as loadbearing walls, balconies or roof timbers, as they will only serve Each Passivhaus design is based on regional weather to draw more heat out of the building. But we also data so that it is intrinsically tailored to its locality. It need the building shell to be air tight, so that all that is then a question of very accurately recording the warm internal air isn’t leaking to the sky. potential heat losses in the design, through walls, floors, roofs, windows and so on, and matching them Of course, the shell may be airtight but the rooms with the energy input from day-to-day living, solar still have to be ventilated. The Passivhaus solution gains and a small amount of conventional heating. is to do this in an energy efficient way, by drawing The design and form of the building should facilitate fresh air from outside, filtering it to remove dust this, for example, by orientating towards the sun and and pollen, ducting it slowly and quietly to all the keeping a relatively compact shape. living spaces and then extracting it just as slowly and quietly from the kitchen and bathrooms, transferring the heat energy across to the supply air and exhausting it back outside. End result? Clean Kranchistein Passivhaus Heat image air to all rooms, delivered silently and continuously, whatever the weather is doing outside! On warm, calm days you can simply slide open the windows to benefit directly but wouldn’t it be nice to know you still have healthy air quality even in the midst of the coldest winter or the heaviest storm? And don’t forget, it’s even possible to refurbish your existing house to achieve this same level of efficiency and comfort! Cowan Architects 9-10 Old Stone Link, Ship St., E. A Shared Passion love, anger, joy, grief, and more complex emotions like empathy and compassion. I often think of them as “people” and have found that same sentiment extended to most other creatures in the natural world. Raising three little girls in the bush would seem pretty hairraising to most people. How do you do it?

Over the years, the Ashdown Forest Living has supported the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) headed by local Hammerwood resident and renowned wildlife artist David Shepherd. So we’re very pleased to bring you the news that TV presenter and anthropologist, Saba Douglas-Hamilton has cemented a family alliance by becoming Honorary VicePresident of David’s foundation. Saba said of her new appointment: “I am honoured to be one of DSWF’s Honorary Vice-Presidents. The long-term alliance between our families, Save the Elephants (STE) and DSWF goes back many years. This appointment brings us closer together at a time when, more than ever before, wildlife needs strong alliances to protect it.” Protecting Zambia’s elephants is one of the charity’s current priorities. Saba herself lives in Kenya where she runs their Elephant Watch Camp. Some of you may recall her ten part BBC series, This Wild Life, which aired to great acclaim last autumn. We are very pleased

to be able to bring our readers an interesting Q&A with Saba, to give local residents a greater insight into elephants and her conservation work: So tell us, do you define yourself predominately as a mother, conservationist, safari camp owner, or documentary star? I’m a mother and a conservationist, both of which go hand in hand if we wish to secure a sustainable future for our children. My work now at Elephant Watch Camp is about much more than managing a safari camp. What I try to do is introduce people to the magical world of elephants through the eyes of what we’ve experienced as researchers and then recruiting them to the conservation cause. We call this conservation-tourism, and it has proven to be very effective. You had a very close encounter with a special elephant when you were young. How has that shaped the story of your life? I’ve always felt that elephants are special – they’re highly intelligent, sentient creatures that share many emotions in common with us, like

14

With so many animals around, we decided to employ a Ninjananny to help us with the kids – a samburu warrior called Mporian who teaches them all about the wildlife and is there to protect them from the hazards of the bush. And we do home-school, so they are busy from 8:30am until about 3pm doing their lessons. Otherwise, we have to teach them to be bush wise in the same way that one teaches children to be street wise. They have to keep an eye out for elephants, snakes or scorpions, and be as consistent with avoiding getting bitten by mosquitoes as one has to be about brushing one’s teeth. Given the security concerns in Africa the past few years, what are your thoughts on taking a safari with the family in tow? Taking your kids on safari is one of the greatest gifts you can give them, opening their eyes to an entirely different part of the world and a very different way of life. As well as the opportunity to meet animals in the wild living the way they have through the millennia, and of course, nothing beats seeing an animal in the flesh in its natural habitat. As we’ve seen from the recent terrorist attacks in Europe, danger Enquiries: 01342 300152

WWF’s Local Leading Lady Josie C-Thornewill 24 from Haywards Heath, was recently crowned winner of the prestigious WWF’s Eco Challenge with her innovative creation to help protect the environment.

we would normally throw away in the skip could be turned into a nature project for local school children. It’s a really fun, but simple way, for schools to bring to life the work they do on sustainability within the curriculum. It’s an honour to win and I’m really excited about getting started with the project.”

WWF and People’s Postcode Lottery had launched a nationwide search to find ingenious sustainable ideas that could make your neighbourhood, workplace or school more environmentally friendly; an innovative solution to reduce the pressures put on our planet. Josie won the workplace category with her innovative idea to use recycled waste materials from construction sites to build ‘Bug Hotels’ on every site and help school children to learn about nature.

Jen Clements, spokesperson for WWF-UK said: “We had some fantastic entries and Josie’s idea is brilliant and a really clever idea to help get the younger generation involved in helping to look after our natural world. She is a very worthy winner of the workplace category and a great example of how we can all play our part in helping to protect the future of our planet.”

Josie said: “I wanted to prove that waste materials

Below are steps to building a bug hotel:

But why build one? Our gardens are home to a wide range of living creatures. An average garden could hold over 2000 different species of insect! With all this diversity of life it is good to know that very few creatures cause significant damage to our prized flowers, fruit and vegetables, the ones that gardeners call pests. Even better, there are many more creatures that help us control the pests. By providing the

right habitats we can greatly increase the number of beneficial insects in the garden. Some wild invertebrates, such as bumblebees and solitary bees, are declining in numbers in the wider countryside, so by providing homes we can contribute to their conservation. The Ashdown Forest Living would like to congratulate Josie for winning.

Trying to limit your child’s screen time? Almost every parent’s constant battle, here are some tips:

‘Lead by Example’. This will probably be the hardest one to do :). But if its your habit to pick up your phone every 10 minutes or so to check FB, etc. try to give yourself larger set time intervals, this might be difficult but try to discipline yourself. You might even decide to wait until the kids have gone to sleep to check social media, Sky Sports (for the husbands), etc. In fact, reading a book (or magazine) in front of kids is a good thing for them to see, as we know children often learn by copying. The theory goes: you on screens less = them on the screens less... Set Limited Viewing Times. Choose the appropriate screen viewing windows and if you must switch off the WIFI, TV etc. at that exact time - but warn them ahead of time so they know what to expect!

I know that none of us have any time but even just one game would probably be appreciated. Be the Parent. Encouraging healthy behaviours can make you unpopular but usually a compromise can be struck. An awards system for screen time can be a winner. Explaining why you have made the decision to set limits, will help them follow through and someday, hopefully, they will choose it for themselves. And may the force be with you :)

May Reminders for your Garden May is always such a colourful month here in Sussex with the Rhododendrons and Azaleas coming into bloom. Other shrubs are also starting to give colour such as the Ceanothus with its very pretty shades of blue and the white scented flowers of the Philadelphus - so there is plenty to catch your eye. Now is a good time to get your pest control regime in place as they will be prolific this month. It is worth taking the time to protect your plants from being eaten by the pests as it can become quite costly having the plants eaten away or covered in unwanted specimens. There are biological controls as well as non-biological but whatever you choose an early start is the key. This month is good for pruning or clipping hedges back. Beech, Hornbeam, Thuja, Buxus and Leylandi can all be cut back towards the end of the month. Lonicera nitida and Ligustrum (Privet) can be trimmed every 6 – 8 weeks from now until September. Forsythia and Ribes sanguineum (Flowering Currant) can be pruned after flowering, this gives them time to put on new growth ready for flowering the following year.

the forecast for a frost, then cover them with some horticultural fleece to protect them. Keep an eye on your climbing plants as they will be putting on a lot of new growth. Decide which are the shoots you want to keep and then trim back unwanted ones. This helps to stop the plant becoming too wild and top heavy. You can help by tying in new shoots.

Prepare and level the ground and put a fine layer of topsoil then scatter the grass seed. Keep it watered if it is a dry spell. The first cut should be when the grass has grown to about 5cm, use shears or a mower on the high setting, the aim is to just trim the top of the blades of grass, this encourages the lawn to thicken. Established lawns should be cut weekly, starting with the blades on a higher setting.

If you have perennial seeds now is a good time to sow them. Prepare the ground and scatter the seeds as you want them. As they start to grow you may want to thin them out. Keep the area around them weed free so they don’t have to compete.

As always, make sure you find time to sit and enjoy the results of your efforts. Happy gardening…

If you’re sowing a new lawn now is the time to get it done.

There is still a danger of frosts so be careful of putting out some of the more tender plants, particularly in tubs and baskets. You can prepare them and watch

Mrs Beale’s Special Garden From the South Downs to the High Weald, the rural surroundings of our county with good train links to London are a definite draw. 124 years ago these reasons were just as appealing for James and Margaret Beale, looking for Article by Jo Grange somewhere to build their country home. With the arrival of the railway to East Grinstead they bought three farms on the south side of town and built their family home: the most beautiful and iconic, Standen. Whilst the house itself was designed in close collaboration with architect Philip Webb, the garden was a combined effort between Mrs Beale, a local landscape designer George Simpson and Mr. Webb. The three had quite different views on the design: George Simpson favoured the Gardenesque style with strict geometric layouts; Philip Webb wanted to carry the Arts and Crafts principles outside by creating distinctive outdoor ‘rooms’; Mrs Beale wanted to incorporate her own sophisticated planting patterns and experimental ideas.

horticultural land showcased Mrs Beale’s love of exotic and experimental planting whilst leisure areas provided space for the family to enjoy sports, walking and games. Agricultural areas of the farm, such as fields, barns and tracks provided the infrastructure to the productive areas of the garden and these spaces, such as the kitchen and fruit gardens, supplied the house (and the Beale’s London home) with food. Many large houses of that time would have had these defined areas, but what was special about Standen was the prominence of the agricultural and productive areas; being very much ‘on display’ around the main entrance to the property, compared to the horticultural and leisure areas which were, in fact, more hidden from those first views. When arriving at Standen, visitors would have had to pass through Goose Green to access the house, a busy area with dairy cows passing through to the barn to be milked and other animals grazing on the green.

The resulting layout and use of the garden was divided into four distinct groups. Highly

In fact, work started on the gardens even before the house was built such was its importance to the family. Luckily for us, Mrs Beale’s obvious enthusiasm and interest in gardening was recorded in the diaries

she kept for over thirty years detailing the plants she added, extensive weather notes and experimental planting schemes. Her forward-thinking approach to gardening was quite unusual for a woman of her era. So as well as having seven children between 1871 and 1885, she built a strong reputation for herself as a plantswoman over the years, becoming one of the first to be accepted by the Royal Horticultural Society. She also enjoyed being one of the first to trial new plants, many of which had only just arrived in Britain. Her successes and struggles were recorded; from trying to grow a healthy pink China rose to use as a cut flower in the house, to the continual leaks in the swimming pond. These diaries, along with historical photographs, have allowed us to piece together how the garden would have looked in its prime during the 1920’s. Thus we are now almost at the end of a five year restoration project,

uncovering many hidden gems and restoring features that have got lost over the years. Standen provided the Beale’s with somewhere to unwind, entertain friends and enjoy the outdoors. Visitors today often comment on this relaxed, homely ambience. Part of this can be attributed to the Arts and Crafts interior, with its warm and welcoming furnishings, but also partly to it’s hillside location with fantastic views over the reservoir and beautifully landscaped gardens. Visitors can still see some of the original plants that Mrs Beale planted over one hundred years ago. When the family went on their world tour in 1906-7, Mrs Beale sent back a collection of Japanese maples which still grow around the Sloping Lawn and are now some of the tallest of their kind in the UK. There are also the rare acers, which deliver a colourful display every Autumn, plus the two plantations of trees at the top of the garden which

were the first trees to be planted in 1891. A few have been lost to storms over the years, but they are still serving their original purpose of protecting more delicate plants in the garden from the prevailing winds. With the five year ‘garden revival project’ shortly coming to a close, there is plenty for visitors to see that they may not have seen before. Currently there are 15,000 tulips bursting forth around the formal gardens offering a stunning display of colour and in June there will be the Standen Midsummer Garden Festival, celebrating the glory of the garden and offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about the Garden Revival Project. This hidden gem just down the road is well worth a visit over the coming weeks.

Handy Cleaning Tips

bicarb of soda The humble bicarb of soda has many useful qualities, among them its cleansing ability. Due to its abrasive nature and high PH levels it makes a fabulous natural cleaner. As we try to cut down chemicals in our households, using this super-substance may be one choice you make. Here are some suggestions to try:

GLASS OVEN DOOR No one loves this job but of course it has to be done. Warm the oven slightly and wipe the oven door with a damp clothe, then sprinkle bicarb of soda or a paste that you’ve made up of it with water - should have an icing consistency. After a couple of hours, the paste should turn brown as it absorbs the grease. Use some abrasion and then clean off the now brown paste. TARNISHED SILVER Make a paste of three parts bicarb to one part warm water and apply to the silverware or silver jewellery with a cloth. Then rinse. DIRTY CARPETS Mop up the worst, then sprinkle bicarb liberally on the carpet, leave overnight or for as long as possible. Sweep up as much as you can with a brush, then vacuum up the rest. Or if you want to freshen your carpet in general just sprinkle, leave, brush and vacuum up. STAINED CUPS Use some bicarb and a lot of energetic scrubbing with a scourer to return them to their former glory. The glistening result is worth it and with no nasty chemical smell either in your cups!

Family Fun and Fundraising Lindfield based and family-run, Chip Chuck Ltd are a small but passionate team who are excited to introduce their must-have family garden game to people of all ages across the Ashdown Forest area and the whole of the UK. The game was first played by Directors Chris and Maddie Best a number of years ago and they’ve been hooked on it ever since. After introducing the whole family to the game and many, many friends, Chris and Maddie wanted to share the fun with a much wider audience and in 2014 they formed Chip Chuck Ltd with Chris’s son Richard. The game took on a few new rules and an image makeover, bringing it up-to-date and making it accessible for players of all ages and abilities. The wonderful thing about Chip Chuck is that it can be played by just two people or a large group. The game is so easy to play, with no complicated set-up or scoring and it is quite a leveler – It really is open to all ages who can play on an equal footing together! The Chip Chuck game set consists

of two identical box halves (made from sustainably sourced Acacia wood), placed 3 meters apart, and two sets of 5 wooden chips. The chips are thrown one at a time from behind one box half and towards the other, scoring points depending on which section of the box half the chips land in. Players take their turns until one player reaches 21 points or higher. Being an accurate shot will help, but all players will either thrive or fail depending on their luck. The element of luck in this game keeps it very exciting - it only takes one lucky chip to make a master of any player! Chip Chuck Ltd prides itself on being connected to its local audience, through their website, on social media and in person at a number of local village days and school fairs. The directors have close ties with local charity St Peter & St

150 Years On: John Mason Neale Sackville College almshouse stands at the end of East Grinstead’s High Street. Sackville College was founded in 1609, in the will of Robert Sackville, 2nd earl of Dorset, to provide a room and a small pension to 31 aged, poor people. Today, it still provides affordable accommodation for local elderly people of limited means; it is of course a beautiful building of architectural and historical interest. The survival of Sackville College is truly remarkable, because the founder died just days after making his will, so shortage of money has been a problem throughout the 400 year history of the college. This summer sees the celebration of the life and work of renowned warden John Mason Neale. He arrived in 1846, aged 28, with his wife, their little daughter and baby son. They had three more daughters and lived at Sackville College for the next twenty years. He probably died of tuberculosis like so many of his day. John Mason Neale was an energetic and caring warden, arranging for the chapel, dining hall and pensioners’ rooms to be

refurbished. He even contributed some personal money. Some residents were so very poor, but he always ensured sunday lunch was provided.

Neale. Of course there was no NHS or welfare structure in Britain in the 1850s.

He wrote many hymns and carols, the most famous of which of course is ‘Good King Wenceslas’, published in 1853. It was written in his study, looking out towards Ashdown Forest. In 1854, he founded the Society of St Margaret, whose nuns went out to nurse the sick and poor, in very tough conditions. At this time, Florence Nightingale went out to the Crimea to nurse at Scutari hospital and Neale wrote to her supporters; soon some women considered ‘too young for the East’ were referred to

The very first Sisters of the Society of St Margaret lived in rooms at Sackville College and helped to nurse sick residents. Neale found an ideal lady to be the first mother superior in Ann Gream, the daughter of the Rector of Rotherfield, she was accustomed to parish work. However, her father needed nursing, so Neale rented a house in Rotherfield near Crowborough, for the sisters. He walked there and back to visit them regularly - some 14 miles each way. When Ann Gream’s father died, Neale rented a succession of houses in Church Lane, East Grinstead for the growing sisterhood. A school and an orphanage followed, Neale raised money for the building of what we now call ‘The Old Convent’ and saw the foundation stone laid. The work of the Society of St Margaret lives on, in Chiswick, in the USA and in Sri Lanka. We honour a remarkable Victorian who achieved a great deal in his relatively short life, despite facing struggles and criticism. This Kitchen company, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you might think. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Ann Way, leading to the new houses next to the Old Convent, this road honours the sisterhood’s first mother superior. There are reminders of Neale in St Swithun’s too: the Oxford Movement window has a picture of Neale based on a photograph supplied by his daughter, Katherine Ermenild. Incidentally, she became mother superior of the Society of St Margaret. St Swithun’s church is open daily. There are free guided tours on May Day, and on some afternoons in the summersee boards outside the church. Sackville College is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 2-5pm, from mid June to mid September. Admission is £5 per person, £1 for children.

Visits at other times may be arranged in advance with the warden and the almoner: 01342 323414 or email: admin@sackvillecollege.org.uk See www.sackvillecollege.org.uk for details of concerts and for more info about Flower Festival, www.swithuneastgrinstead.org.uk

Young Carers of the Ashdown Forest area Do you live in Crowborough, Forest Row, Uckfield or surrounding areas?

when needed. In Crowborough there is a Chill Club offering the chance to meet others with similar home lives, do activities, cooking, games and have fun.

Do you know any children aged 5-18 who are helping at home? This could be because mum has a disability, dad has a long term health condition, etc. These young carers may be able to receive support from East Sussex Young Carers.

Some schools locally have school support groups held for the young carers to work on their action plans and do activities such as first aid.

This could be assisting with the cooking, helping someone get up and around or the help could be giving them space or someone to talk to if they are feeling down.

If you would like to find out more, refer a young person, volunteer at the Chill Club or fundraise please contact our Hub on 0300 777 2011 or email info@eastsussexyoungcarers.org.uk.

If so, we are here for them. We run groups, activities, school sessions and can offer one to one support

Red Squirrels Making a Comeback! Martin & Karen Hayes, two of our readers who live in Saint Johns, Crowborough (right next to Ashdown Forest) couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw a single red squirrel feeding on their bird table over the Easter break. They were understandably very excited, as red squirrels have not been around the South East or much of England since the 1940s/50s. They wondered if any other readers had noticed any red squirrels around the Asdown Forest area recently? If that’s the case, please let us know, drop us a email or give us a call. Photos are also very welcome!
