“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Dear Residents,
Whats inside this month
Welcome to the May issue! Fingers crossed as we go to print, the beautiful weather we’re having lasts throughout May with some rain in the night for the garden! This month we bring you a heartwarming story by a local Withyham resident who has just released a book of short stories. We really loved one of them, so we wanted to share it with our readers. The beautiful gardens at Sheffield Park hold an interesting moment in history for this area, when it housed hundreds of Canadian troops on their way to the front. We bring you an interesting insight to this time period. Folly Wildlife Rescue continues to be a literal life-saver for many injured wildlife hereabouts. Director Dave Risley has kindly provided an indepth look at the vital work they do.

evenings this week have been spent “torching the ponds looking for invertebrates, amphibians and especially Great Crested Newts.
Ranger Life My first couple of weeks as an Ashdown Forest Ranger for the North Chase and spring has finally sprung after the wettest winter anyone can remember. Learning the Chase has involved early morning starts with Clive Poole (volunteer ranger) to identify nesting sites for key birds including Nightjar, Woodlark, Tree Pipet, Stonechat, Redpolls and Dartford Warblers.
The Grazing team have been flat out lambing our Hebridean flock with ninety-five new arrivals so far and six to go. Two ewes had triplets and we fostered a tiny orphan named Titch. All we need now is the grass to grow! The commoner farmers put their sheep and cattle out on the forest a couple of weeks late this year. We had 40 (reported) livestock worrying incidents last year. Please remember to keep dogs under control - Thank you.
We have excavated four small ponds just north of Lintons car park in preparation to pulse graze the site of the forest fire last year. The ponds will develop into wonderful habitats for aquatic wildlife including plants, invertebrates, amphibians, birds and mammals. Several

New dog waste bins at the Forest Centre and Broadstone car park Every year over a thousand children come to the Ashdown Forest to study and explore. They learn about the habitats, unique wildlife and local history through hands-on activities. The main site that is used for education is near the Forest Centre at Wych Cross. The only problem we ever encounter that stops the children fully enjoying their day is caused by dog fouling. Therefore we are now trialing the use of two new dog waste bins to help stop this problem. The bins which will be situated at the Forest Centre and Broadstone car parks have been made possible through a generous donation from Fairwarp Community Association. Please always clear up after your dog.

Canadians PARK
in the
During the Second World War, Sheffield Park was requisitioned by the War Office and became an extensive camp for several Canadian regiments. The impact on the landscape was stark and with painstaking work the garden has taken many years to reinstate to its former glory. This year Sheffield Park will be looking at what life would have been like for the soldiers here, before they moved on to continental Europe for the war effort.
Looking over the gardens today, it's hard to believe that it was home to thousands of troops a little over 75 years ago. But in 1941, troops were drafted in to build two large camps and Nissen huts sprung up all over East Park. Initially these were occupied by British soldiers but two years into the war, Canadian troops arrived in large numbers and their impact
on the park and surrounding area was quite immense. Local children were fascinated by the foreign soldiers and many hung around hoping for a ride on a military vehicle or a discarded Sweet Caporal cigarette packet with their prized 'cards' showing pictures of different aircraft. At the time, the house was occupied by Nellie Soames,
12
the widow of Arthur Soames, a passionate plantsman who became the owner in 1910. Many dances were held at Sheffield Park, at Sussex country homes that were taken over for troops, where the locals had the chance to dance and socialise with the soldiers. Continues over the page. CANADIANS IN THE PARK CONTINUED
First hand memories Alan Bradford, a member of the gardening team at Sheffield Park and Garden, has strong family connections to that time. His grandfather, Tom (Pop), owned the local paper round and from the age of 13, his dad, John, delivered the meat on behalf of the local Butcher. Alan recalls: In the early 1940’s just after the outbreak of the Second World War, Canadian Soldiers moved into Sheffield Park Gardens. This caused great excitement in the area, especially in my family because thanks to their proximity to Sheffield Park and their connection with local businesses they were given an extra special
The pillbox on the Parkland at Sheffield Park and Garden (Dan Nicholson-Smith) Family Pass. This gave them controlled access to the Canadian contingent stationed within the grounds. Dad would regularly cycle through the grounds delivering newspapers and meat to locals and
newspapers and sausages to the soldiers. He never tired of telling me how on Sundays he would have to collect 300 newspapers from the waiting room at Sheffield Park Station. Pop would drop him off at the Canadian camp entrance from where a soldier in a Bren Gun Carrier would come and collect him so he could deliver the papers round the camp. He often returned from his rounds better stocked than when he set out! I remember dad telling me with a twinkle in his eye that, “the Canadian’s would give me tinned peaches, jam and cigarettes in return for the newspapers I bought them, which I then sneakily sold because I didn’t smoke and in times of strict rationing, my lad, cigarettes were like gold dust!". He also recalled with great fondness the parties held at the soldier’s Continues over the page.

of Concrete Path and Nyssa Grove. It has been recreated using photographs, war diaries and memories of the soldiers and local residents. Inside you can get a feel for how life would have been and see some artefacts kindly lent by Newhaven Fort and many replicas, highlighted with quotes from the war diaries and interviews conducted with local residents. There will also be an archeological evacuation in East Park to look for more artefacts. Tours will take place where you will be able to see what's been discovered so far and learn more about the Second World War era at Sheffield Park.
Replica Nissen hut in the garden (Nina Elliot-Newman) camp. “When my friends and I came through the camp, the soldiers would hand out sweets which was an absolute treat for us all. The impact on the estate today Today, there are still a few clues in the garden of the Canadian's residence. Concrete Path in the southeast corner of the garden was laid by the soldiers and if you look closely, some of their footprints are captured in the path. On the parkland, the walls inside the pillbox are covered in graffiti too where they spent time on observations and on training exercises. Perhaps some of the biggest remains are the brick and concrete bases of the Nissen
huts around East Park. Over one hundred huts were laid out in a random formation beneath the tree canopies, hidden from view of any enemy planes. They were used as dormitories, wash rooms, storage huts, workshops and mess rooms to cater for all the needs of the troops. Historic photographs show us what these looked like and how they were used, plus there is one remaining hut within the gardener's compound that is still going strong.
If you're a fan of military vehicles, make a note of Saturday 21st July when there will have a display of historic vehicles in the car park bought along by local enthusiasts. It will be the first large gathering at Sheffield Park in over 70 years.
What's happening this year As part of the series of events this year to mark the Canadians in the Park, Alan with help from the garden team and volunteers, has built a replica Nissen hut in the garden down by the junction

All Sorts & Surprises Local Ashdown Forest resident, David Burt OBE, has just released his new book, ‘All Sorts and Surprises’. David started writing aged 80, using his experience working in various jobs and businesses: from his start on a building site, through National Service in the RAF, a national bank, selling and marketing and operational management before becoming the CEO of a major international manufacturing company supplying the aerospace industry. His short stories are all based on incidences that he has observed or in which he has been involved. All proceeds go to the local, Hospice in the Weald. We are pleased to be able to bring you one of these lovely short stories:
BREAKING THE HABIT Never once did Harry glance at his watch or the clock on the bakery wall. He knew by habit exactly where he was in the order of the day’s events. He did give a courtesy nod to the supervisor, who nodded back, neither spoke. He also nodded to one of the assembly girls, who smiled back at him but that was the only form of communication he had in the company as had been the case for many years because all the employees knew the longest serving deliveryman did not engage in casual chatting, indeed did not engage in any discussions.
Harry left his elderly grey mini car close to the railings in the van yard, exactly at 6:00 a.m. by the same rail section as he had the day before. Indeed, the year before or had he given the process any thought, the same rail section he had left his wellpolished little car each working day for the last twenty years.
Harry did not think about his working day routine as he walked to his company van in slot number one, precisely where he had left it at one o’clock the previous day after his delivery shift. In fact, he was not thinking about anything except the van keys in his right trouser pocket, the same company uniform trousers he wore every day for work.
At six-twenty-seven, possibly three minutes later than usual, Harry started his loaded van. The unusual delay had been caused by the bakery’s large black cat walking casually across the front of Harry’s van. Harry had watched the cat, impressed with its calm control and smooth action, delaying to start the motor until the cat had cleared his view. On the road making his way to his first café shop/bakery drop off, he fell easily into his habit mode of simply operating the van without the slightest thought, his sub-conscious reacting to junctions, traffic lights, crossroads, cyclists, cars on the way early to work, until he drew the van to a stop exactly outside the front door of the ‘Cosy Tea Cake and Teashop’, as he had been doing for nineteen unbroken years. As a committed loner, Harry had no interest in holidays, accepting the inconvenience of national and Christmas holidays but perfectly happy to return every day to his rather isolated single bed-roomed cottage to spend
Harry unlocked his company van and walked to the side door of the long factory building where, had he considered it, the sweet smell of cooking bakeries was filling the air. He tugged open the door and entered the depot, busy with white coated, white hatted and hair netted workers, collecting an array of bakeries from ovens and placing them with their paper cups on to wooden slatted trays. Harry, walked to Station One, clearly identified with a numbered card and his name, ten trays awaited his six o’clock arrival. As always Harry gave no thought to the process and he began to transport each tray with its range of cakes, buns, tarts and rolls of every filling and description at a steady pace into his van. Fitting each tray on to its slide in the order he would be delivering them to the cake shops on his round.

BREAKING THE HABIT Routine delivery followed routine delivery, following Harry’s tidy habitual routings. He did occasionally, when the traffic was light or the traffic signal was red, reflect upon the evening task of sorting the 1850 ‘penny red’ stamps in their year order within a new album he had acquired after several weeks of careful consideration over the size, suitability, durability and cost of the albums on offer.
any free time on his small but perfect garden or with his stamp collection, happy to avoid all but the minimum social interaction with people, as he had managed to do since he was a young boy. Harry shouldered the bakery tray and as usual the owner was on hand to open the door and once Harry had slid the tray on to the front counter, received the proffered customary mug of tea with a nod. “Going to be wet later, Harry,” advised the owner, who always gave Harry his first weather report of the day as he carried on. “Looks as if the PM is going to have his work cut out to get any sense from those EU politicians, and I see United are going to lose their manager,” Harry sipped his tea and nodded at appropriate points as the news was transmitted to him. Finally, with a nod and with a, “Same time tomorrow,” comment, he shouldered the previous day’s delivery tray and returned to the van, the shopkeeper happy that he had given the taciturn delivery man the day’s news.
Returning to the depot following his final delivery, Harry was unexpectedly forced to make a deviation from the main road down a country cut through lane as directed by the Water Board’s signs and the ‘Closed Road’ sign. Only slightly bothered by the inconvenience, Harry followed the lane for some minutes before he was forced to undertake a rapid stop when a small dog ran across the lane in front of him, causing him to step sharply on the brakes concerned he might have hit the dog. Harry pulled into a layby allowing other vehicles to continue their journey before he climbed out of his van.
On his way to his second delivery stop, his mind wandered for a moment over the possibility that he had not added the tomato feed to his watering can before he had watered the plants. The thought was so disturbing that Harry took out his neatly ironed grey handkerchief and vigorously blew his nose. The procedure was another of the little tricks that Harry used when he was concerned he might be getting into a state of anxiety by thinking of something in his daily routine that he might have missed doing.
Harry found a small terrier pup curled up in a ball in the hedge a pace or two back from his van and to his relief as he reached in through the brambles the shivering pup wagged his tail and allowed Harry to stroke him and carefully lift him out of the hedge, once Harry had decided nothing was broken. Cars continued to pass at a steady rate forcing Harry to push into the hedge to avoid them and he became fearful for the little chap, and so holding him with one arm inside his company jacket he walked back into the cab to decide what he should do.
Blowing his nose cleared his mind and in his case caused him to recall he had topped up the bird nuts in the box outside the greenhouse, tied the extended shoots on the gladioli plants and indeed had put two spoons of tomato feed into the watering can before watering each plant.
Several minutes later Harry was no clearer to a solution but the pup had settled on to the passenger seat in complete confidence, as if he owned it. There were no houses in the immediate vicinity and so short of any ideas Harry pulled out into the traffic to continue his route to the depot. Half a mile further down the lane the pup was sitting up and most comfortable when Harry caught sight of a sign ‘Waifs and Strays Dog Charity’ and he pulled the van over, encouraged by the thought he had found the pup’s home.
The disturbing thoughts did not disrupt Harry’s driving habits and he arrived exactly at seven-thirty as usual at his second delivery and was as usual greeted by the cake shop proprietor at her open door, where as usual he failed to attend to her tirade about her customers. On this morning it was about a certain lady customer and her wretched children who will finger the cakes before choosing one! Harry nodded in distant agreement as he deposited the goods and collected yesterday’s tray before a, “Same time tomorrow,” grunt as he slid past her, still verbally protesting the indignities with which she had to contend, on his way out of the door.
With the pup under his arm, Harry knocked on the house front door which was opened by a small rather care worn lady in an overall with ‘Waifs and Strays Dog Charity’ insignia on the pocket. “This,” said Harry, “may be one of yours,” as he proffered the terrier pup forward. “Yes,” said the lady, without accepting the

BREAKING THE HABIT offered pup. “He escaped when the vet was here.” “Well,” said Harry, “would you like the little fellow back now?”“Not really,” said the lady. “All the litter were put down and the vet’s gone now.”“Put down.” Harry was startled and horrified as he pulled the pup back to his chest. “Why? What had they done?” “Nothing,” continued the lady sadly, “but the mother and the pups were dumped on us and although we found homes for three and the mother, we simply have no money or space in the charity to keep more than the forty dogs and we had no option.
Harry Higgins,” and without her asking Harry gave his address. “Well, Harry, you have really cheered me up taking the lovely little chap on, so as you don’t live very far away, perhaps you would call and let me know how he gets on? What are you going to call him?” , “Well I hadn’t thought, Mary,” replied Harry. And surprised as he realised he had called her by her first name without embarrassment, he went on. “You see, I was diverted down your lane, just by chance, and there he was in the lane in front of my van. Would you think ‘Chance’ would be a good name for him?” Mary clapped her hands, “How appropriate, look he already knows.”
"Could you keep this little chap, otherwise I’m afraid he will have to go when the vet visits next?” Harry positively spluttered as he reeled away from the thought that the pup would be killed. “But he cannot cost much to keep and this is a charity.”
‘Chance’ had stood up on his sturdy little legs on Harry’s lap, ears pricked, tail wagging, whether in response to the hand clap or his name was not really clear. Back at the depot Harry parked the van and with Chance in his arms he walked into the factory where suddenly he was surrounded by smiling bakery workers wanting to see and pat the pup, complimenting Harry on his decision to take on the unwanted dog. Harry found that all the attention did not throw him into a nervous retreat, as it most certainly would have only earlier that morning. Indeed with Chance wagging his tail and clearly loving the attention, Harry felt a warm glow of comfort that he had somehow stepped over the protective wall of disciplined routine which he had hidden behind for so many years, thanks to his new four-legged friend.
“It’s a charity with no money and forty dogs to feed,” said the lady. “To be honest I simply do not know how to keep going from one day to the next.” Harry then said the first spontaneous thing he had said in years. “I’ll keep him,” and to his own amazement he did not feel even a twinge of the sort of anxiety that normally overcame him whenever he did anything, or said anything out of his normal routine. The lady looked pleased and relieved. “Come in a minute,” she said beckoning him to follow her. “I have a leaflet which explains what he should eat and helpful notes on getting him settled in.” She led the way into a small neat office, filled with files and dog products. “Sit down I will make you a cup of tea.” Harry sat obediently with the pup on his lap. Harry was so disturbed to have moved out of his pedestrian comfort zone, he blurted out a question. “But why are things so bad for you? You are providing a service to the community.”
A week later with Chance in a bright red collar, Harry knocked on the door of the ‘Waifs and Strays Dog Charity’ which was opened by Mary. She smiled. “My goodness how well and smart Chance looks. I have told lots of people your story, Harry, and got one or two donations because of it. Now come in both of you.”
Had he given himself time to consider the matter he would have recognised this was the longest sentence he had spoken to anyone for several years. Indeed, since the day that a post van had backed into his van.
Sitting down with a cup of tea, Harry said. “Look I have thought a good deal about our meeting and I was wondering if I could help you raise money for the charity by taking Chance around and telling people our story. I take Chance out with me on my rounds in the mornings and I have seen how the customers respond to him and I thought we might do more for you.” Mary’s face was beaming. “What a lovely idea. Thank you so much, Harry. Anyway who are we to decide, look at Chance’s tail going, he obviously approves.”
The lady returned to the room saying, “Here’s your tea, do you take sugar? By the way I’m Mary Jones,” she continued. “Well we were fine until the lovely lady who raised funds for us in the area died last year and I just cannot look after the dogs, deal with trying to place them and raise money. I am working every hour god gave me now. What’s your name?” She carried on writing in a large ledger. “Oh, er,

THE FOREST GROWS
The Conservators of Ashdown Forest are delighted to announce that, with a very generous grant from the Society of Friends of Ashdown Forest, they have acquired 12.75 acres of woodland adjacent to the Forest Centre.
A fair bit of clearance work needs to be done over the next year, but with the help of volunteers we have already made a good start.” The Friends are hosting a Tea Party (with lots of cake!) to celebrate on Thursday 10th May from 2 to 4.30pm at the Ashdown Forest Centre. Members of the public are welcome to come along and find out more; as places are limited, please reserve by contacting Pat Arnold on 01892 611414 or emailing ashdownfriends@aol.com.
The Chairman of the Board, Richard Stogdon, said: “For many years we have been negotiating the purchase of this land to ‘bring back’ into the forest, it will be a wonderful addition, particularly for use by our Education Programme. The generosity from the Friends is greatly appreciated as is the ongoing support they give us.”
Becoming a 'Friend of Ashdown Forest' brings the satisfaction of protecting the forest for future generations. With a programme of specialist walks, meetings and talks, they also publish their own magazine for members, Ashdown Forest News.
Director, Pat Buesnel, added: “This is such exciting news! The land will be perfect for our work with schools, our toddler groups and many other activities and events we have and will eventually provide some lovely walks and trails. Additional interest will be provided by the Pillow Mounds discovered during the archaeology survey.
A monthly donation of as little as £3 is all it takes to help support them. See www.friendsofashdownforest.co.uk or email ashdownfriends@aol.com for more details.

For the Love of Local Wildlife
Folly Wildlife Rescue Trust is a special, local wildlife hospital located in Broadwater Forest, south of Tunbridge Wells. It is entirely 'homegrown' and self-funded. Director Dave Risley gives us an insight:
With spring seemingly almost over (before it even began), the normal influx of injured nestling and fledgling birds and orphaned small mammals, that we’d see at this time of the year, never really materialised by mid-April, we’d barely admitted a handful of baby blackbirds, a solitary song thrush, three tiny badger cubs and a few new-born bunnies, so nowhere near the normal levels for the time of year. But wildlife has a knack of playing catch-up, and now that the weather is finally improving, the situation is set to change dramatically - May is always a busy month, but this one is likely to be manic! For those of you unfamiliar with our work, the trust is a registered charity dedicated to the rescue, treatment and rehabilitation, of injured, orphaned, distressed and sick wildlife, and in 2017 alone, over 3700 such
casualties passed through our doors, including badgers that had been hit by cars, dormice whose nests had been accidentally destroyed by gardeners or hedge flailing machines, huge

numbers of garden birds caught by cats, hedgehogs entangled in plastic garden and games netting, and even deer caught in fencing – here at Folly Wildlife Rescue, there really isn’t a dull moment. Enquiries: 01342 300152 Please mention us when responding to adverts

injury, and these can involve extensive treatment. Here at Folly, we’re very fortunate to not only have our own vet, but a well-equipped veterinary unit too, complete with digital X-ray machine, and haematology (blood) analyser, so when a serious casualty is presented, the vet can literally, within minutes, have the animal under sedation, take an x-ray and blood sample, and then carry out a thorough examination. Fortunately, though, we now have our own purposedesigned wildlife hospital, and with a wide range of specialist pens, enclosures and aviaries to hand, it can offer first-class care and veterinary treatment. Having opened in 2012, the hospital is now one of the UK’s most advanced facilities, and when you combine this with the dedication and professionalism of its staff and volunteers, it gives real hope to thousands of injured animals in this area, every year. To give a taste of this work, it’s worth describing in some detail, the way we operate. On arrival, each animal is carefully checked by one of our supervisors, to fully ascertain the extent of its injuries, and these findings, together with its sex, age, weight are carefully recorded; at this point too, pain-relief can be given to make the casualty more
comfortable and tide it over until it’s seen by the vet. At the same time, a receptionist will take as many details as possible from the finder, including the exact location the animal was found and the circumstances behind the incident. In addition, each casualty is issued with a reference number, thereby helping to ensure that it not only receives the correct veterinary treatment, but after recovery, is returned to the right location - after all, one hedgehog or collared dove looks very much like another! Some of the cases we admit are straightforward, with a simple requirement of warmth, food, and a course of antibiotics, but others will have suffered more serious
30
A recent example of this, was a female badger, admitted after having been knocked down by a car near Holtye Common. On arrival, she was completely unconscious, and appeared to be in a very bad way; a broken jaw was suspected, but brain damage and internal injuries were a possibility too, so we didn’t really hold out much hope for her recovery. But badgers are made of very strong stuff, and much to our surprise, an X-ray revealed that nothing, including her jaw, was actually broken (and the very bloody injury was caused by a split tongue that eventually healed of its own accord), so all that was really required was rehydration therapy and pain-relief, after which she was put to bed, nursing what must have been a fairly substantial headache. where it can then pick up its life where it left off – and it’s this very thing that makes all our work so worthwhile.
At first, her progress was slow, and several days passed before she was even able to move, let alone take food, but once the initial trauma and bruising had subsided, she quickly began to improve, and just 10 days after admission, Belinda (as she had been named), was ready to be transferred to an outside enclosure, where it would be easier to check her mobility.
See our website www.follywildliferescue.org. uk for opening times, follow us on Facebook, and for as little as £2 a month, help us help wildlife, by becoming a Friend of Folly Wildlife Rescue.
It was soon ascertained that she had indeed made a full recovery – remarkable in an animal that just two weeks earlier was literally at death’s door - and was now ready to go home. A few evenings later (with her original finder in attendance to witness the release), she was taken back to the scene of her accident, where she quickly disappeared into the night.

Many animals, including badgers, and even hedgehogs, will have a territory, or home range they need to return to (and very often, especially in the case of birds, a mate will still be there to welcome them back!), so it’s important that we never keep a casualty longer than is absolutely necessary. So, as was the case with Belinda, it’s always a real joy to see an animal, that would otherwise have surely perished, go back to its family group and familiar surroundings,

Kedgeree with a Kick Quick, cheerful and very easy to cook.. and very yummy!
METHOD INGREDIENTS • 300g easy-cook white or brown rice • 4 eggs • 200g skinless cod fillet (or pollock), cut into chunks • 120g skinless smoked haddock fillet, cut into chunks • 120g skinless salmon fillet, cut into chunks • 2 tsp curry powder • 150g frozen peas, thawed • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped • 1 pinch ground black pepper Visit: w w w.ashdownforestliving.co.uk Please mention us when responding to adverts
Cook the rice in boiling water until tender, according to packet instructions. At the same time, hard-boil the eggs for 10 minutes. Put the chunks of fish into a large frying pan and add a little water. Heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes until the fish is opaque. Drain. Look out for ready-prepared plain fish pie mix from the fresh fish counter - also sold prepacked - to save some money. Shell the eggs and quarter them. Drain the rice and add it to the fish with the curry powder, peas and parsley. Heat, stirring gently, for 2-3 minutes. Season with black pepper and serve, topped with the eggs. Another time, use mixed vegetables instead of peas.

Dear Sariah... Introducing Sariah Jackson, trained midwife and mother of four and now our advice-giver extraordinaire.
Who needs 'experts' when you can get
Dear Sariah, I am a 42 year old mum of 3, the youngest is 11. I have been at home for 20 years now but feel it’s time I started looking outside of the children. I don’t want to have nothing when they’ve all left home. I didn’t do very well at school and wonder if it’s too late to go back? I have no idea where to start or what road to take. I’m interested in criminology but don’t know if I could use that interest or not. My husband says I just have to go for it and see where it takes me. Not sure I’m confident enough to be successful and I have no idea where to start. Can you help?
Alfie the Ashdown Forest Aardvark
perienced mum!
the best advice from a local, highly-ex
What an exciting new avenue this is for you. It’s a great idea to make some plans as our children get older and sometimes less dependent on us. It’s a great time to start looking into some new interests and activities. You suggest that you didn’t do so well at school but that has no bearing on how well you can do and what you can achieve in the future. It sounds like you have a supportive husband which is a great place to start. Often, our confidence in trying something new can be a little low but knowing that your family will give you support is great encouragement. The next step is finding out what your end goal is and what you need to do to achieve it. If you haven’t been in education for a while, an access to higher education course is definitely worth looking at. Locally, Crawley college has a great reputation for helping mature students begin the path to education. Take a look at their website to get some ideas that might suit what you’re looking for. If you need to resit subjects such as maths, English or science, then they offer courses in these subjects too. Normally the access courses are a year in length which gives you some time to define where you might like to study after that, be that going to university or perhaps open university. In essence, the world is your oyster. We are never too old to learn or begin a new chapter of our lives. It can be scary, stepping out of our comfort zone, but you’ve already started the beginnings of your new dream. All you have to do is follow it. Good luck.
Quote “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power”.
