Building Refurbishment Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

vidence has been found of people inhabiting the forest area during the Stone Age. A hand axe was found near the place known as Gill’s Lap, a name more associated today with Winnie-the-Pooh! At this period the present day Ashdown Forest was part of the much larger forest, Andreswald. It is thought that this in turn was part of a huge greenwood of oak and beech which flourished following the retreat of the last ice age. Andreswald stretched over a large part of the Weald. It was dense and almost impenetrable. Large herds of swine and deer roamed across it. It was also the haunt of wilder beasts: bears, packs of wolves and wild cats. Over the intervening centuries the trees have gradually thinned out and what we still call a forest is now more accurately described as lowland heath. The activities that the forest have sustained over the last fifteen hundred years have landscaped the forest that we see and enjoy today. The Romans had an administrative centre for its iron production in the Weald at Garden Hill on the Forest. The iron ore was plentiful and trees to provide charcoal to smelt the ore abounded. When they left in the fifth century the Saxons possibly carried on the industry in a small way. Very little evidence of this exists, only one small bloomery has been discovered of this period. They would mainly have used the area for grazing some animals on it in the summer. The conquest of England by William of Normandy brought changes to the Forest. Sussex was divided into six rapes by William. They were strips of the county running South to North. Ashdown Forest fell into the rape of Pevensey which was awarded by the King to Robert, Duke of Mortain, his half brother. William II, William Rufus, the ownership passed to Gilbert D’ Aquila, whose grandfather had been killed at the Battle of Hastings, forty years earlier. Gilbert was the founder of East Grinstead in the early 12th century, setting it out as a new town on the ridge which runs east to west on the western edge of the forest. At the time of the Norman Conquest nearly one third of England was covered by forest. The forests mainly belonged to the King or one of his nobles. They became the recreation grounds for Kings and nobles. Some were in existence already and merely

adapted and enclosed, as was Ashdown Forest. Others, such as the New Forest, were planted especially at the command of William I. The vast acres were protected by Royal Charter. During the next three centuries the ownership of Ashdown Forest passed through several royal hands including those of Henry III’s Queen, Eleanor and Edward I. In 1372 Ashdown Forest was granted by the Crown to John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster. He was a man of great importance and influence. He was the uncle of Richard II and his adviser while Richard was a minor. The Forest was to be used as a royal hunting ground. It’s fairly close proximity to the royal palaces in London probably meant that it was used more frequently than others farther afield. It was known then as the Great Park of Lancaster. The use of the term “park” denotes that it was enclosed. “Forests” were open grounds. The Great Park was enclosed with a “pale”, although it is not known whether it was erected then or had been earlier. The pale consisted of a ditch and mound upon which was a fence too high for deer to jump. Deer were prized above all else for hunting. “Whosoever shall slew a hart or hind should be deprived of his eyesight”, a barbaric punishment. Gates and hatches were provided to allow access. “Gates” were for people on horseback or cattle being driven, “hatches” were for those on foot. These terms live on in local names such as Coleman’s Hatch and Chuck Hatch and in Chelwood Gate. Hunting at the period was central to the lives of all social classes. Hunting deer and boar were aristocratic pursuits. It was recognised as a preparation for the male rituals of chivalry and also for battle. Hawking was also the prerogative of the rich as hawks and falcons were expensive to train. The hawks

provided pheasants and partridges for the dining table of the nobility. Freeholders could hunt on unenclosed land. Commoners netted songbirds and sparrows to supplement their meagre, basic diet of bread and vegetables. The Normans also introduced rabbits to this country. They were reared and kept in warrens within the park. They provided not only meat but fur for the lesser aristocracy. Ermine was only for the very rich. Some rabbits or conies as they were sometimes called, inevitably escaped and provided a target for poachers. Article continues next month

The English Language: Okay - Dokay Okay, OK or O.K. is very probably the most recognized word in the world. It is also the most grammatically versatile of words. For instance: ‘Lunch was OK.’ (adjective); ‘Can you OK this for me’ (verb); ‘I need his OK first’ (noun); ‘OK! I heard you.’ (interjection), ‘They did OK’ (adverb). It also expresses varied meanings: A simple answer, ‘Shall we leave?’ - ‘OK’ Great enthusiasm/joy - ‘OK!’ Great Anger/Aggression - ‘OK!’ Lukewarm/Average - ‘The day out was OK’

A meaningless space filler - ‘OK, let’s get on with it then’ For such a famed word strangely it’s origins are so obscure that it’s a matter of heated debate between language experts.

An Old Traditional Local Treat

Sussex Pond Pudding

Try this at home! Recipe by Chef

Dean Samsudin

at the Brambletye Hotel

Our most popular pudding at the Brambletye: Suet pastry with a bitter-sweet filling. The name refers to the liquid that oozes from the pudding when served.

Ingredients Method 1. Butter 4 x 250ml/8floz heatproof pudding basins.

Pastry 400gm/13oz self-raising flour 200gm/7oz suet Pinch of salt

3. Roll the dough to 3-4mm/1/4” thick and then cut out 4 circles big enough to line the basins – a side plate is a good size to use as a template.

125ml/4floz milk

4. Cut one quarter of each circle. Place remaining three-quarters in each basin, bringing the 2 cut edges together to overlap a little bit. Push the pastry down into the basins, taking care to seal the overlap by pressing firmly. Keep the remaining quarter to use as lids.

125ml/4floz water Filling 2 lemons Unsalted butter Demerara sugar

2. For the Pastry: mix the flour, suet and salt in a large bowl. Then, mixing with your fingers, add the milk and start to work into a dough. When you have added all the milk, start with the water - you may not need all of it. Keep working till you have a dough you can roll out with a rolling pin.

}

same weight as 2 lemons, see recipe

5. To make filling, weigh the lemons and then weigh out the same amount of butter and sugar. Cut the lemons into ½” square chunks. Do the same with the butter. Mix in bowl with sugar and then fill the basins. 6. Now roll remaining pastry into circles and fit as lids. Pinch the lining firmly together to seal. Cover each pudding with foil, place in a steamer with tight fitting lid over a saucepan of simmering water. Boil gently for 3 hours – keep an eye on the water level and top up when needed. 7. To serve remove foil, turn out into bowl and serve with a thick dollop of Jersey Cream.

Bringing a Village Together with

Talent on your doorstep by Eddie Pallagio INSPIRATIONAL CHILDREN’S STORYFEST IN POOH-COUNTRY As Hartfield has such an amazing literary history, their Community Play in 2012 is interweaving it’s preparations with a festival celebrating children’s literature old and new. Storyfest, a 2-day children’s book festival, will be held in May 2012. There’ll be authors, illustrators, comic-strip writers and performance poets sharing wonderful ideas and helping visitors of all ages to let their imagination fly… Confirmed so far:

Hadlow Down Variety Club began in 1982 when one of the villagers bemoaned the fact that there was not a lot to do in the village. Realising that if you wanted something to happen you had start it yourself a couple of villagers decided to create the Variety Club. The Variety Club has since proved to be an excellent way for villagers to meet people and make lots of new friends. Although the members are all amateurs and have no pretensions of professional thespian standards we are lucky to have an ex-professional performer as our director and others with theatre experience among our number. We believe in putting on shows for fun, to raise money for local and national charities and because we enjoy it. As a ‘real’ village group we also believe in being inclusive of all our community and especially the children of our local school who will be an essential part of our next production Aladdin cast. There’s so much talent in our village and the quality of the sets, costumes, props and all the other things needed for a successful show prove it! Aladdin will be performed at Hadlow Down Village Hall on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd December at 7.30 pm plus a matinee on the Saturday at 2.30 pm. Tickets or more details can be obtained by phoning 01825 830857 12 • November 2011 • Ashdown Forest Living

Ian Whybrow will be on hand with his Bucketful of Dinosaurs. David Gatward will terrify teenagers with his horror trilogy The Dead-The Dark-The Damned, while the little ones can cuddle up to Tracey Corderoy’s delightful duck Dylan. There will be delving into the pages of Tom Gates Homework Diary with the wonderful Liz Pichon – nominee for this year’s Roald Dahl Funny Prize. Gormy Ruckles will leap off the page with the help of Guy Bass. Bruce Ingman’s fantastic illustration workshops will get your creativity flowing and your imagination soaring. And Brian Moses will MC The Storyfest Poetry Slam. In addition to all this there will be storytelling tents, a comic-strip zone, 2 minute theatre, a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, a chance to hunt for the real Pooh and an on-site festival bookshop where author’s will be signing their books for all their fans young and old. What more could one ask for…

Working for Wildlife This month we interview Dave & Annette Risley of Folly Wildlife Rescue. Read on to find out how they became the accidental saviours of wounded wildlife in this area.

How & why did you start the Folly Wildlife Rescue? Tell us about it’s inception. Da

ve & Annette Annette worked for the campaign group, Animal Aid, in the 1980’s and members of the public, thinking the organisation was an animal welfare one, would sometimes bring injured or orphaned animals into it. Annette took on the job of caring for them at our then home in Tonbridge. When we moved to Eridge, we continued the work and it rapidly grew, until by the end of the 1990’s we were taking in over a 1000 casualties a year. At this time we had very little equipment or in fact anywhere to keep the casualties and most of them were kept in the house!

How has it expanded over the years since it started to what it is today? By 2004 we realised that the operation was in danger of overwhelming us, so the trustees decided that the only option open was to set up a proper wildlife hospital. Many parts of the country already have wildlife hospitals, but Kent and Sussex are very poorly served. With much help we raised funds to obtain 5 acres on the Broadwater Forest, near Groombridge. We hope to open the hospital early in 2012.

How many animals come through your doors every year? At the present time we admit some 3500 wildlife casualties a year. The majority are birds but last year we admitted 43 badgers, over 400 hedgehogs and several deer too.

In a couple of sentences please describe a typical day at the centre? From dawn until dusk, especially during the busy summer season, the centre is a hive of activity. Feeding baby birds begins before 6.00 and continues until 8.00 at night and very often there are animals such as badger cubs that have to be fed through the night too.

What’s your vision for the future of Folly Wildlife rescue? We hope in the coming years to be able to open similar centres in various locations across the region. At this time though we still have to work hard to fund the present centre. Our running costs are in excess of £80,000 a year. We rely very much on our Supporter Group. If anyone would like to support us, they can visit our website and get more details.

Don’t mess with an old dog. An old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he’s lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch. The old German Shepherd thinks, “Oh, oh! I’m in deep trouble now!” Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, “Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder, if there are any more around here?” Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. “Whew!” says the panther, “That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!” Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the panther. So, off he goes.

The squirrel soon catches up with the panther, spills the beans, and strikes a deal for himself with the panther. The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says, “Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine!” Now, the old German Shepherd sees the panther coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, “What am I going to do now?” But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says... “Where’s that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another panther!” Moral of this story... Don’t mess with the old dogs... Age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery! Brilliance only come with age and experience.

inspired outfits for our readers. Her words mirror the national trend: “Downton Abbey has definitely had an effect. We’ve seen a big increase in the sales of cravats, braces, Edwardianstyle blouses, pearls and faux-fur stoles. Hats have been popular since we started just over a year ago and we’re currently selling lots of tweed caps and jackets as well as skirts and capes.”

For all of those that have lived and loved the 2nd series you’ll be pleased to know that the fashion world is helping to continue the dream with Downton-inspired pieces for all to emulate the elegance of the Crawley sisters.

It’s current exhibition brings the day-to-day life of the twenties, in which Standen enjoyed it’s heyday, to visual reality. As the present becomes more futuristic by the day, how uncanny is our yearning for the past…

Sales of cravats, fur, silk gloves, empire-line velvet dresses and strings of pearls across the country have surged. We asked Fiona Friend, owner of vintage shop, Wear it Again Sam, in East Grinstead to put together some Downton

Outfits by Wear it Again Sam

e can proudly say a part of this area will indelibly live on in Downton Abbey’s second series with all railway scenes having been filmed at our very own Bluebell Railway. Chris Knibbs their operations manager told us, “It’s a great series. We were very honoured to have them. We met some of the cast, they were all very friendly. Among other things we had to change the signage to ‘Downton’ for authenticity. Filming took place back in March as the last episodes were being written”.

Anticipating, with baited breathe, the probable announcement of a third series, what can we possibly do in the interim? Well any continuation would surely usher in the roaring twenties. So for those that wish to get ahead & scrub up on the ‘ins’of the day visit Standen House for a decent dose of historical learning.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. ‘’I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function’’ She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The work ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. And expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Is Vibration Training the fitness short-cut of the century? Can’t find the time or bear the thought of battling the cold to get to the gym? Thankfully there’s an alternative. The Ultim8 Vibration plate, deceptively looks the easiest to use apparently exerting the least of your effort. A feat of modern engineering vibration plates are specifically designed machines that vibrate at certain frequencies. The user can perform a variety of exercises on the vibrating plate. It is claimed that a minute of this is equal to 100 sit ups and that 20 minutes is equivalent to a full work out. Studies have shown that vibration training stimulates the muscular blood flow and also has positive effects on tendon tissue, bone density, the nervous system and hormone balance. Apparently Madonna is a big fan of vibration fitness, among others.

Win an Ultim8 vibration plate from hire fitness for 8 weeks! For the chance of winning simply answer this question:

A minute on the vibrating plate is equal to how many sit ups? Email: info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk or write to: Ultim8 Competition, 33 Morton Road, East Grinstead, W. Sussex, RH19 4AF. Send answers with name, address & phone number. Closing date: 30th Nov 2011. For more information about hiring the Ultim8 and other fitness equipment call Michael on 0845 094 2292 or 07932 139386 or email mwall@hirefitness.co.uk, Websites: hirefitness.co.uk & vibration-plates.com

Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.

Call Michael at Hire Fitness on 0845 094 2292 or 07932 139386 or email on mwall@hirefitness.co.uk www.hirefitness.co.uk “Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex 26 • November 2011 • Ashdown Forest Living

Please for your own safety drive slower at this time of year and phone 01342 822846 (24hrs) to report deer RTCs on the forest. Thanks.
