PREPARE FOR WINTER!

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Local History Notes

Forest Row Resident Abe Mitchell & the Ryder Cup By Dorothy Hatwell

Henry Abraham (Abe) Mitchell was born on January 18th 1887. His mother Mary had been working as a domestic servant and was not married at the time; the birth took place in the East Grinstead Union Workhouse. Mary’s parents George and Sophia Mitchell, who lived in Forest Row, took the infant Henry into their own family, in spite of the fact that they had another child themselves later the same year. According to the 1911 Census Mary later married Mark Seymour in 1891 and they had seven children, but it is unclear if Henry was one of the seven or not. Henry was soon known as ”Abe” and seems to have lived with and been brought up by his grandparents as a son, not a grandson - even still the 1911 census does name him as a grandson. Mary must have kept in touch with her family and with Abe, as in 1911 her own brother Frank was living with her and her husband Mark who himself, was a greenkeeper at the golf club. This would have meant that he saw the Mitchell family almost daily. From an early age, Abe played golf. Using first a stick as a club, he later was the proud possessor of a set of real golf clubs. His skill soon reached the ears of the committee who ran the ‘Cantelupe Artisans’ Club’, based on the same course as the Ashdown Forest Club. It was only the second Artisan’s Club in England and he was invited to become member. He worked as a gardener and tree-feller in the grounds, which

built up his strength and also caddied for members of the Ashdown Forest Golf Club which increased his knowledge of the game. In those days amateurs were the people who played in tournaments. Professionals were regarded as lower class and were not allowed to compete in most places alongside the ameteurs. Also Artisans were really amateurs but from working class backgrounds. Abe Mitchell fell between two stools; he was by far the best golfer at Forest Row but he was an artisan and a professional. The First World War loomed and Abe enlisted in the Royal Artillery Regiment just before the outbreak on August 4th 1914. he had an uneventful war and on his return to Forest Row he was welcomed at the station by the village band. In 1920 he was offered a five year contract to be the professional at North Foreland Golf Club in Kent. Soon after taking up his new post, he married Dora Deag in Tunbridge Wells on November 27th 1920. During his time at North Foreland he visited America on several occasions to play exhibition matches. When his contract expired and was not renewed he threatened to emigrate

to America but Samuel Ryder who had just taken up the game, employed Abe as his personal instructor at the Verulam Club. Ryder soon became almost obsessed by the game and he also recognised the quality of Abe’s play. Ryder had been running a successful seed business which he’d personally transformed by selling seeds in Penny Packets. This enabled anyone, even those with limited means, to grow their own vegetables and flowers at home. He amassed a fortune through the sales of these, and, when ill health forced him to retire, he took up golf to fill his time. He thought that a tournament in which a team from Britain played the United States for a trophy would be good for the game. And naturally thought that Abe, now one of the foremost golfers in the country, would be included in the team. However, because of Abe’s professional status it was initially decided that he was not eligible to play. On hearing this Ryder, withdrew his offer of a trophy, but reconsidered it when Abe was included. In a victory of real talent over privilege, Abe was made Player Captain of the first Ryder Cup team in 1927. Unfortunately, he developed appendicitis just before the team sailed to America and so could not play. However, he did go on to captain three more Ryder Cup tournaments in the next few years. To assert and re-iterate his support of Abe, Ryder commissioned a statuette of him on top of the now world famous Ryder Cup trophy. This means that Abe Mitchell has been part of every Ryder Cup competition between Great Britain and the United States and latterly between Europe and the States since the very beginning. Though he died suddenly in St Albans on June 11th 1947 aged only sixty, his legacy remains to this day on the international golf stage of the Ryder Cup.

Thinking

FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT…

Jackdaws

by Walter D. Wintle published ca. 1900 If you think you are beaten, you are If you think you dare not, you don’t, If you like to win, but you think you can’t It is almost certain you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost For out of the world we find, Success begins with a fellow’s will It’s all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are You’ve got to think high to rise, You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man, But soon or late the man who wins Is the man WHO THINKS HE CAN!

This lively, smaller member of the crow family is a highly sociable bird and often joins up with rooks and carrion crows in autumn and winter to roost communally in huge numbers.

© Alan Price Gatehouse Studios

• adult birds are all black apart from a distinctive silvery sheen to the back of their heads with light grey, almost white eyes • are renowned for their love - and often theft - of bright, shiny objects that they accumulate in their nests • most jackdaws pair for life, sharing responsibilities for caring for their young and building nests in cavities of trees, cliffs and often in chimneys • hop on the ground with a quick, jaunty step, feeding on insects, fruit, seeds and scraps and are notorious for taking other birds’ eggs and fledglings • their call is a high-pitched, metallic sounding “tchack”, which might account for the ‘jack’ in their name. ‘Daw’ was also traditionally used to mean ‘knavish or stupid’

The English Language: Is there method to the madness? When the Oxford English Dictionary created a furore by including a new definition of the word ‘literally’ meaning (pretty much) ‘not literally’, It was the biggest Semantics news since sliced bread! Literally means of course, ‘in a literal manner or sense; exactly’. However over the years a new meaning has morphed into, ‘a term for emphasis when a statement isn’t true’. This, of course, is heading to the other side of the word-meaning- spectrum. Despite the various outcries and decries literally is far from being the first word in the English language to have ‘changed sides’. ‘Nice’ for instance, the sworn enemy of the school English Essay, has visited almost every aspect of human attitude. It’s history is briefly: Late 13th Century, ‘foolish, stupid, senseless’, from Latin nescius meaning ‘ignorant’. It’s meaning seemed to have progressed to ‘timid, reserved’ and then ‘fussy, fastidious’ (late 14th Century). By the 1500s it became ‘precise, careful’ (preserved in the phrase nice and early) and then ‘agreeable, delightful’ (18th Century), finally becoming ‘kind, thoughtful’ in the 19th Century. Another current meaning also indicates that something is satisfactory. ‘Mate’ is another word that’s meaning may become distorted through time by over use in certain contexts as in, ‘Mate, you really don’t want to do that’ or ‘Come on mate, say sorry’, etc... We’ll have to check back in 50 years for a re-estimation of it’s morphing process!

Did you know? The Amazonian rainforest, known to be one of the most species-rich areas on the planet, is actually dominated by a only few types of trees. While the forest harbors around 16,000 tree species, only 227 of them account for nearly half of the trees that thrive there. The palm Euterpe precatoria is most abundant. Researchers came to this conclusion after tediously cataloguing 1,170 different tree plots throughout the region. The work could help develop better strategies for protecting the forest.

The Village of Fairwarp

The Village of Fairwarp is nestled in the southern part of Ashdown Forest and boosts an interesting history some of which we bring you here: The Romans Whilst there is no mention of the village of Fairwarp (Fayre Wharp) until 1519 there are significant Roman connections in the area. At Duddleswell there is a preserved section of a road that ran across the Ashdown Forest and onto London from Lewes. This is part of Ermine Street which was built around 100 AD and made of slag and cinders - most likely from the iron industry of the area. There is evidence that the Romans produced iron as a bloomery (ancient furnace) has been found in the Fairwarp area. The name Oldlands is suggested as coming from “old ironworking lands”. In addition a number of Roman Coins have been found in the vicinity. Local heresay claims that there was a Roman posting station at neighbouring village Duddleswell. The origin of the name Duddleswell comes from a chapel, St Dudeneys – Dudeney’s well.

The Iron Industry The first definite mention of Fairwarp is in 1519. There was a court case in Nutley where the village is referred to in connection with the felling of “all the trees between Nutley and Fairwarp” by the “King’s Men”. The wood being the vital ingredient in iron production, this would have been a blow indeed! In fact the principal industry of the area at the time was charcoal burning for use in the production of iron. Oldlands Farm was a site of such production and the various marlpits around the area bare testimony to the extraction of the stone for this industry; the farm itself is believed to be a 16th century ironmaster’s house. Boringwheel Mill Farm area was where the centres of cannons were brought to be hollowed out. It has been said, that the forge known as Old Forge (Old Forge Lane) made horseshoes for Edward II and the railings around St. Paul’s Catherdral! All around the community, there are names that reflect this industrial past: Furnace Wood, Old Forge Lane and Marlpits.

slowly returning to nature. Airmen’s Grave near Fairwarp The Airman’s Grave is not in fact a grave, but a memorial. On the night of the July 31st 1941, a Wellington bomber was returning from a raid on Cologne. One of its two engines had stopped and the pilot was attempting to reach an airfield close to the English Coast.

Farming and Community Growth In 1777, the village consisted of a single farmhouse on a track across the Forest. By the late 19th Century Fairwarp had become a thriving community boasting the church (consecrated in 1881), a school (opened in 1873), post office and pub. Thus the community was able to support a Silver Band and Cricket team. Brickfield Meadow Within Fairwarp there is a traditional meadow with an ancient hornbeam hedge, now a nature reserve. During Spring and Summer there is a wide range of butterflies and moths attracted to the wild flowers. Oldlands Hall The history of the estate and house is extremely interesting and a study in itself, especially in the context of the development of the village. Italian POW Camp Just leaving the main village, heading east on The Street, tucked away in amongst trees is two delapidated buildings that formed the POW camp. There is little information about the camp and it is

The weather was poor and the pilot was unable to identify a suitable landing place and crashed on the southern slopes of the forest. All six crew members were killed. They were all in their early to mid-twenties. It was the mother of Vic Sutton that first erected a wooden cross at the site of the crash. By a odd twist of fate, at the time, she was living in nearby village Nutley. In 1954 a stone cross was erected and a fence put round the area to keep the sheep out. Then in 1971 the wall of local stone was erected by the Forest Rangers. On Rememberance Sunday there is a special open air service held here. Fairwarp Spitfire During “Wings for Victory” week villages were asked to raise money for planes and in return had a plane named after it. Sir Bernard Eckstein handed Mrs Shorthouse (who was secretary of the War Savings Group) a cheque for a quarter of a million pounds (£250,000) who combined with the Oldlands Hall Group in sending £730,000 from Fairwarp, making a record contribution as the best village in England! Sheffield Park’s Oak Hall

Last month, Oak Hall, part of the Coach House tearooms, opened its doors as a much-needed addition to the existing restaurant facilities at Sheffield Park and Garden. Acquired by the National Trust in January this year, as the name suggests Oak Hall is a double-height, oak panelled hall complete with beautiful stone window surrounds and a dramatic wood panelled, stone fireplace at its centre. This grand room will become a focal point for Christmas at the property hosting Christmas lunches, decoration workshops and a family carol concert for the first time. Little is known about this building other than that it has always housed the stables for the estate, with records of an ‘L’ shaped stable building dating back to the late 1700’s. Oak Hall itself was built in 1881 according to a date stone set into the apex of the roof and in 1891 Lord Sheffield created a riding school out of the adjoining Coach House for his adopted daughter Mabel Attenbrough.

In addition to its use as a riding school, it is believed that Mabel would entertain locals from the community in the hall. Her scrapbook from the time describes how a pantomime was held therein each year, for the tenants, villagers and local school children. Another story tells of the Australian cricketers lodging in the Coach House when they came over for matches - although it is more likely they would have been put up at local residencies. A scandal was stirred up in 1895 when seemingly out of the blue, the staunch bachelor Lord Sheffield adopted Mabel, who was the local vicar’s daughter, already in her twenties, while Lord Sheffield himself was well over sixty. Various rumours about the nature of their relationship have circulated over the years... If anyone has any historical information or images of Oak Hall and the Coach House, Sheffield Park would be delighted to hear from you, phone: 01825 790231.

Singing for Soul Cakes

Hair &Beauty

On All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (or Hallowmas as it used to be called, Nov 1st and 2nd) beggers went door to door ‘souling’ wherein a song was sung and promises of prayers for the dead of the household made in exchange for ‘soul cakes’.

SUE HARRISON THE FINISHING TOUCH

The cakes were usually filled with allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger or other sweet spices, raisins or currants, and before baking were often topped with the mark of a cross to signify that these were alms. In 1891 the souler’s song was recorded as containing the following lyrics: A soul! a soul! a soul-cake! Please good Missis, a soul-cake! An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry, Any good thing to make us all merry. One for Peter, two for Paul Three for Him who made us all. The soulers must have droned out their ditties tonelessly and monotonously. Shakespeare remarks in the Two Gentlemen of Verona that Speed observes a “special mark” of a man in love is “to speak, puling like a beggar at Hallowmas” - (meaning of puling: whining, whimper).

Frizzy hair is a nightmare can you please advise something to tame the frizz? A Hair is naturally hygroscopic meaning it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere so with damp weather hair will have a greater tendency to frizz. For temporary solutions a barrier needs to be put in place so use good quality hair products like Frizz Control by Moroccan Oil or to keep a defined curl then use Curl Definition or Curl Control Mousse. For a longer lasting solution Kebelo is a professional insalon smoothing system that lasts up to 100 days.

I have a daughter that is using my skin care creams, what should I buy for her to use? A How many times have we seen deep finger mark scoops in our pots of cream. Possibly your daughter or partner?! With anyone of any age it is a good idea to be in a regular skincare routine. Whether you are using make up or not the skin should be cleaned in some way both in the morning and at night. Never sleep with make-up still on and make sure the pollution and grime of the day is removed. An easy routine is a gentle face wash in the morning followed by a day moisturiser and in the evening use a cleanser, toner and night moisturiser. The earlier a routine is started the better, but it is never too late. This routine can be extended to incorporate exfoliators, eye creams , masques and serums. CROWBOROUGH RUNNERS This year’s Crowborough 10K Sussex Grand Prix road race around the streets and lanes of the town is on Sunday, December 1st at 10am. This is the 27th running of the race and it attracts about 500 runners from Crowborough, the surrounding area and from as far afield as London and Cornwall. We have had well over 10,000 entries through the years with some steadfast runners coming back year after year, some trying to break the course record and some attempting their first race.

Crowborough Runners was formed back in 1982 after a few enthusiastic runners had watched the inaugural London Marathon back in 1981. The rest, as they say, is history as the Club now has both adult and junior sections and looks after beginners and improvers all the way through to those wishing to improve their best 10K, Half Marathon or Marathon times.

Entries are already streaming in for this year - one can enter at www.runnersworld.co.uk/events. The Club is always proud to say it has helped many local charities including the Air Ambulance and the Crowborough Lions, who have always helped marshall the race. James Welbury, Club Development and Level 2 UKA Coach www.crowboroughrunners.org.uk

Our main aim is to get as many people as possible to dust off those trainers and to start getting fit whether they have never run, ran a long time ago or want to improve. We have social club runs on a Wednesday and do longer runs or races on Sundays, often on the Ashdown Forest in the summer months. This post Olympic year has been a busy one with the start of 5K Park Runs for many members, trips to Brugges for a 10 mile race followed by a welcome Belgian beer at the finish and a group are off to Frankfurt for the Marathon & Marathon relay race soon.

Gardening Tips for November Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Vegetables

Continue preparing beds for the Spring. Leave ground roughly dug as this allows the winter frosts to help break down the soil clods.

Bulbs

Tulip bulbs may still be planted up until about the middle of the month. Lift tender bulbs and store in a cool, dry, dark place after first frosts.

Shrubs and Herbaceous

This is a good time to transplant trees and shrubs. When lifting established plants get as much of the

root ball as possible and get them planted back into the prepared ground as soon as possible to prevent drying out. Large trees and shrubs will require staking to avoid them moving during winter storms. Continue to lift, divide and plant herbaceous. Prune evergreens to shape.

Lawns

Give your lawn a good raking to lift away accumulations of debris. Keep leaves raked from the lawn. They should be composted.

Grease a 23cm (9inch) shallow square cake tin with a little spread or butter, then line the base with baking parchment or greaseproof paper 2. Melt the remaining spread or butter in a large saucepan with the golden syrup. Take care that the mixture doesn’t get too hot. 3. Remove the pan from the heat and add the porridge oats, apple, apricots, sultanas or raisins and mixed spice (if using). Stir well, add the beaten egg and mix again. 4. Tip the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 20-25 minutes until firm. Cool in the tin for about 20 minutes, then cut into 16 squares. Tip 1: Store in an airtight tin, or pack in freezer wrap or a freezer box and freeze for up to 3 months. Tip 2: If you like, melt spread or butter and golden syrup in a large microwaveable bowl for 40-50 seconds on HIGH, then add the remaining ingredients as above. Tip 3: Choose high fibre porridge oats to provide extra fibre in your diet.

NATIONAL AWARD FOR FILM SOCIETY

Forest Row Film Society won the ‘Best Film Programming’ category at the 2013 British Federation of Film Societies awards. This is the third time they’ve received this award in the past 5 years! Here is a Q&A with Society Secretary Brad Scott: DID YOU HAVE TO WORK VERY HARD TO GET THIS AWARD OR DID IT HAPPEN BY CHANCE?

There are guidelines, for the Best Film Programming category that includes a selection of films that targets a diverse part of your community, and introduces your audience to things they might not otherwise have a chance to see. The judges also look for an inclusive, balanced programme, with films from around the world, both older films and recent releases; those that challenge and aren’t obvious choices. Last season we aimed to get a good balance, including more light-hearted and funny ones, as well as a season of Sunday matinees aimed at children and families. FOR WHAT REASON, WOULD YOU SAY,YOU’VE BEEN ABLE TO COMPETE WITH AND BEAT THE OFTEN LARGER FILM SOCIETIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY?

We were a bit surprised that we won this award since the other shortlisted organisations also have fantastic programmes. The Edinburgh Film Guild, for instance, has a remarkable programme of specialist films - I’d love to visit them one day. I think the diversity of our programme was very strong, and we also work with Mike Grenville of Transition Forest Row to include a strand of (mostly) documentaries with an environmental/

spiritual/activist thread. One key special event was the inclusion of Peter Brook’s five hour epic The Mahabharata which we screened with dinner to a full house. We’d been trying to track down the rights holder for a while and it was only after we’d finally wrote to Peter Brook that we managed to arrange a licence. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE GENERAL ‘MISSION STATEMENT’ OF THE FOREST ROW FILM SOCIETY?

We’re just passionate about film, and are keen to encourage interest in film and cinema. For that reason, showing stunning, unexpected films to young people is as important as screening the latest hits from film festivals around the world. It is a delight to see so many children returning to Chaplin, Keaton and Laurel & Hardy year after year. We sometimes get the film-makers or actors along to screenings, which is always insightful, and enables our audience to develop a better understanding about the practice of making films. It has to be fun too. Making sure we include some comedies is important, as is providing a convivial atmosphere, with tea, cake and wine, so that for the audience there is something special about watching a film in a public space with lots of other people. It is so different from sitting at home and watching TV... I’m particularly keen to connect up more with the network of other community cinemas in the area. There are hundreds of similar organisations around the country, and maybe it would be fun to organise a Sussex film festival with the film societies in Mayfield, Hurstpierpoint, Lingfield, Robertsbridge, Lewes and beyond. Any takers? - Brad Scott, forestrowfilmsociety.org

The Ashdown Forest Living has grown from strength to strength with the majority of our customers continually renewing because our advertising has proven results.

“I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ when I heard about it. The fact that it is delivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ashdown Forest area that are hard to reach. This was proved to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km driveway! I’ve had great results advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Building

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead is the brain child of Rachael Workman, A kitchen designer with 19 years of experience behind her. Four years ago, she decided to set up a complete service to help clients create their perfect kitchen with all the hassle taken out. The Kitchens Bespoke showroom gives the idea of different kitchen styles, materials and colour schemes available. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an advantage. ‘I design from a practical viewpoint. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function.’ Rachael always keeps her finger on the pulse of new developments that can bring a kitchen to life and save time and money for her customers. For instance, back-lit glass can give a striking look and there are 50 colours to choose from. Rachael has links to products and materials that may provide the solution to a worn-out or out-dated kitchen. She will then select what works for each individual household from simple door replacement to a complete kitchen refit; the Kitchen Bespoke service is all-inclusive. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself, meaning it’s designed with you, the customer, in mind. Rachael says her kitchens are ‘more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune’. While much of Rachael’s work is local to this area, with her years of experience her client base extends from London to Hampshire. It is no wonder then that Kitchens Bespoke was a finalist in market leading magazine KBB Review’s ‘customer service’ award in the East Grinstead/Crowborough area category. This last year, due to expansion within the business, Rachael has been joined by her husband Guy who says: “Seeing the business grow over the past 4 years, under this economic climate, is fantastic and I couldn’t wait to be a part of its expansion. We both share a vision of creating a family business which gives attention to detail & customer service”. Kitchens Bespoke can design a kitchen that fits you: practically, budget-wise & aesthetically. The kitchen you imagined can become a reality.
