Flat roof repairs

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Eridge Rocks

Sussex Wildlife Trust has recently bought 2.07 ha of woodland adjacent to their Eridge Rocks Nature Reserve just south of Tunbridge Wells. The nature reserve is best known for its majestic sandstone rocks which are important both geologically and for the suite of lower plants (mosses, lichens and liverworts) that it supports. One of the specialities of the rocks is the Tunbridge Filmy-Fern, so named as it was first discovered on the High Rocks at Tunbridge Wells in the 17th century. It is a small plant that resembles a moss and only survives at a handful of sites in South East England.

the open corridor through the woodland. Our plans over the next few years will be to maintain the existing open areas and possibly open up the path on the east through coppicing as in other areas of the nature reserve. Exploring the nature reserve couldn’t be easier. There is a carpark at the base of the rocks and an extensive network of paths through the woodland. By Alice Parfitt, Reserves Manager

The rocks are surrounded by semi ancient natural woodland which in Spring are full of the sound of bird song and the floor is carpeted with bluebells. During the summer months butterflies are on the wing along the sunny rides and glades. The white admiral loves the open sunny conditions, as does the beautiful comma so called because of the small white comma shape on the underside of its wing, while species such as speckled wood like the dappled shade of the deeper woodland. The reserve has several streams running through it making it also a good place to look for dragonflies. One of the most obvious is the beautiful demoiselle, the electric blue of the males make it easy to identify, but large numbers of migrant hawkers are also seen in late summer. The new area of woodland is similar to many parts of the current nature reserve, with a mixture of sweet chestnut, birch, hazel, elder and ash. There is also an area of spruce plantation. The powerlines that cross the nature reserve continue into this plot maintaining • November 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

Fabulous Fermentation I regularly make are nettles, burdock, dandelion, rosehip, hawthorn and wild plums and cherries, all fermented with honey into wine.

Winter is soon upon us and this is when the energy of the plants moves downwards and internally. Little is shown above the ground and so what can be foraged is very limited indeed. But this doesn’t mean that we can’t get our daily consumption of wild food. One only needs to learn some thing of the very easy preservation techniques and the tastes and flavours of Summer and Spring can stay with us for a lot longer. And we do this by various methods of fermentation. The term fermentation refers to anaerobic metabolism. In laymen terms, this is the production of nutrients in the absence of oxygen. In fact we come into contact with fermented foods on a daily basis, bread, chocolate, cheese and wine are but a few foods that have all undergone a fermentation process. Fermenting and preserving food sources is as old as humankind. Long before the invention of the freezer of fridge, these were common practises that ensured the daily intake of vitamins and nutrients required for good health. I bet you didn’t know that yeast synthesise B-complex vitamins in order to foster fermentation. It is not possible to get these essential vitamins through plants and other foods. So what fermentation methods do I employ to ensure the preservation of my wild harvests? I have touched briefly on yeast fermentation, which is the fermentation of the sugars by yeast in order to produce alcohol. Most fruits, be they wild or farmed contain sugar which can be processed in this way. If you have never made homemade wine in this manner before, I implore you to look further into this or contact me for more information. There is a world of flavours out there that can made into delicious and very healthy wines. I currently use my own pears, apples, etc. I have written previously on the use of honey and making mead, my personal favourite wine. By boiling foraged plants in water and then utilising this water with honey, many medicinal wines can be created. Not only are the medicinal properties of the plants combined with medicinal properties of the honey but the fermentation process itself adds many vitamins, proteins and trace minerals. Combinations that • November 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

Pickling plant and roots in vinegar has unlimited variations and make for interesting combinations with cheese. Pickled Rock Samphire was a firm favourite in Victorian times and was sold by the barrel in Covent Garden. Rock Samphire is a member of the carrot family and grows along the coast. A fantastic, aromatic plant that works well with cheese or added to salads. Lacto-fermentation is the introduction of Lactobacillus bacteria into the process of fermentation. This is done with the use of salt or brine. Lacto-fermentation is the process used to make Sourkraut. Although not too popular on these shores, most European countries have their variation of this and is a staple in their diet. Almost any plant matter can be fermented in this way. The longer it is left to ferment the more flavours that are developed. During the Summer, cabbages and vegetables are processed in this manner and then during the winter months when there is 6ft of snow on the ground, a daily consumption of vegetables is still possible. Not only are the vitamins originally present in the plant material preserved but the process, like all fermentation processes, adds even more vitamins and nutrients. But most importantly we need to remember that this food is alive. In the fermentation process we have introduced a living organism, yeast or bacteria. An important fact is that we have trillions of bacteria which cover every surface of our bodies. They live in a symbiotic relationship with us. Performing functions and processing nutrients that we could not do as an organism on our own. By consuming fermented foods regularly we are ensuring that that this community is healthy and they in turn ensure our health - win win if you ask me!! If you would like to learn more about these ancient and beneficial practises then please get in touch.

Uckfield Foodbank

Uckfield Foodbank has been open for just over one year, during which time they have provided 4,590 meals to 510 people, 294 Adults and 216 children. Each person receives 3 days of worth of nutritionally balanced food, enough for 3 meals per day. The clients using the food bank come from Uckfield and the surrounding villages. The main crises that are causing people to use the foodbank are delays in receiving benefits, low income and benefit changes. Sharon Burt, foodbank project manager, said: “Over the last eight years UK food prices have risen by 43.5 percent, forcing 40% of low income households into having to choose between ‘heat or eat’.” During the year the foodbank has received an amazing 12,445Kg of food, all donated by individuals living in the community. Trustee Ian Noble said: “We’ve had three great collection weekends at Tesco, 8 schools gave their Harvest Festival collection to us, churches, shops and GP surgeries in the town collect for us – it’s fantastic the support we are getting.”

of the Trussell Trust, who run an award-winning network of over 400 community-based foodbanks across the UK. David McAuley, Chief Executive said: “It’s deeply concerning that the basics of dignified life in modern Britain - food, heat and electricity – can fall out of reach for so many. High prices, static incomes, problems with benefits and harsh welfare sanctioning are forcing people into extreme financial difficulty.” If you are finding it difficult to feed yourself and/or your family go to the Citizens Advice Bureau and ask for a food voucher, address: The Hub (The hut near the Civic Centre, in Luxford car park), Civic Approach, Uckfield, TN22 1AL. Tel: 01825 764940.

Going Greener Over the last year there has been an increase in electric vehicles in and around Forest Row. WiredThing, a Forest Row based software company, realised that the nearest free 32amp charging point was 9 miles away. With that in mind, they decided to approach FRPC to see if they could provide a charge point at the village community centre and support the ‘green’ ethics in Forest Row.

Give it a try! The installation was completed last month and the 32amp charging point is now up and running and ready to use at: Forest Row Community Centre, currently Monday-Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm.

Fruity banana muffins What to do:

These delicious muffins are quick and easy to make - and they give you a filling, high fibre snack. Serves: 8 adults. Preparation time: 15 mins. Cooking time: 30 mins

1. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 6, 200°C, fan oven 180°C. Put 8 paper muffin cases into a muffin tin. 2. Put the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar. 3. Take 8 slices from one banana and set aside. Mash the remaining bananas. In a jug or bowl, beat together the egg, vanilla extract, milk and melted butter. Add to the dry ingredients with the mashed bananas and sultanas or raisins and apricots. Stir until just combined. Avoid over-mixing.

Ingredients: • 200g plain wholemeal flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 100g light muscovado or soft brown sugar • 1 egg • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 100ml milk • 50g butter melted • 2 bananas ripe is best • 50g sultanas • 25g ready-to-eat apricots chopped

4. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases and top with the banana slices. Bake for 25-30 minutes until risen and golden. Cool on a wire rack. Tip 1: The secret of successful muffins is to avoid over-mixing the wet and dry ingredients. Tip 2: When baking, always weigh and measure accurately, and use proper cooks measuring spoons - levelling them off for accurate results. Tip 3: If freezing, wrap and freeze on the day of baking, as soon as the muffins have cooled completely. They will freeze for up to 3 months.

Wakehurst Place Kew’s Country Home

On our doorstep, but so often taken for granted, Wakehurst is the country home of West London’s Kew – more famous for its Royal Botanic Gardens, alongside the River Thames, than Kew Palace itself. The 500-acre Wealden estate in Ardingly sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Sussex High Weald. It was chosen by Kew in 1965 as an alternative site for propagating plants as it had a higher rainfall than at Kew, richer soil and different microclimates, allowing the range of plants in the organisation’s collections to be greatly extended. The name Wakehurst is of Saxon origin, ‘hyrst’ meaning wood and ‘wake’ possibly coming from the ‘wak’, meaning moist or watery. When Kew moved in, Wakehurst was unkempt, having lacked care and attention for some 18 months since it had been left to the nation by the former owners. For the past 49 years, horticulturalists from

Kew have been transforming the landscape to create one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. Historical records of the West Sussex estate date back to the thirteenth century when a William de Wakehurst purchased land from Phillip de Crauele, or Crawley. However, it was Gerald Loder (later Lord Wakehurst), who bought the estate in 1903, and his head gardener Alfred Coates who began amassing the outstanding collection of trees and shrubs. Gerald Loder’s father had come from High Beeches, the estate at Lower Beeding, which itself became a well-respected garden open to the public before being sold. Gerald became MP for Brighton in 1889, holding several government positions as well as being a keen sportsman and successful in business. Leaving politics in 1906, he devoted himself to horticulture. The story goes that when Alfred Coates went to the House of Lords for his interview, Loader asked him, “Well, Coates, what shall it be; flowers, or trees and shrubs?” and Coates is said to have replied, “I reckon trees and shrubs, sir”, and on this exchange Wakehurst’s unique collection, built up over the next 32 years, was founded. With his main interests of conifers, rhododendrons and Southern Hemisphere plants, particularly those from New Zealand, Loder was kept busy as stock arrived almost daily from British nurseries as well as from abroad; there was seed from plant collecting expeditions and crated plants which had survived long sea voyages.

Sheer enthusiasm and competition between the great gardens of the day led to an almost explosive increase in the number and variety of plants collected by Loder. His notebooks, preserved at Kew, details purchases he made, while his 1908 plant catalogue ran to 300 pages and showed that, within five years of purchasing the estate, there were some 3,000 species and cultivars at Wakehurst Place. Today that figure is closer to 15,000 with the work Kew has done over the past half a century. With the estate shaped by Loder, the development undertaken by the next owners, Sir Henry and Lady Eve Price, was not insignificant. Having bought Wakehurst in 1938, Sir Henry loved plants and took great interest in the estate which in his care became widely admired. He is, however, probably best known as the ‘fifty-shilling tailor’ - his highly successful business had introduced the suit to those who previously could not afford one.

Sir Henry and Lady Eve Price loved the house and gardens, and together they restored the 16th century mansion house and continued to develop the gardens with a blend of skill and enthusiasm. They became formidable plant breeders and major exhibitors at the Royal Horticultural Society show with several award-winning plants, including Viburnum ‘Eve Price’ and Piris ‘Henry Price’ named after them. In 1963 when Sir Henry bequeathed Wakehurst to the nation, it had benefited from over 60 years’ worth of enthusiastic nurturing from owners passionate about plants, and backed by outstanding head gardeners. As Kew moved in, the emphasis shifted and Wakehurst grew into its new role; no longer a private estate but a public botanic garden, accessible to an interested public. Basic work began to construct a public entrance, toilets and a car park, installing a network of hardsurface paths while Wakehurst began to benefit from Kew’s constant plant collecting activities but with conservation firmly to the forefront. Even in those early days, Kew’s scientists were among the first to sound warning shots about the loss of important plants and habitats. The reference collections of birch and southern beech trees were established, and those for skimmias and hypericums were planned. The now hugely popular Himalayan Glade and highly colourful walled garden, behind the mansion, were developed. One single night saw more havoc and destruction at Wakehurst than two world wars combined. In the early hours of 16th October 1987 an almost unimaginable 15,000 trees were lost to the force of

near-hurricane force gusts. Gerald Loder had built ‘shelter belts’ to protect against the weather, but they proved totally ineffective given the power of the winds that night, the worst storm since 1703. A knock-on effect of the Great Storm was to destroy many habitats for wildlife, bats in particular being evicted from fallen trees. Today, Wakehurst is again not only a place of great beauty thanks to tireless work since 1987, but a model of practical conservation. The completion of Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank in August 2000 was the realisation of a dream that will bring nothing but good to endangered plants from these islands and around the globe. The centre has

become an international resource and the largest repository for wild-flower seed in the world. Those great men who started and developed the estate would be impressed if they could see it today. But their spirit lives on, so in a way, perhaps they can... At Wakehurst, the 15,000 different types of plant contains five species that are totally extinct in the wild and 300 more included in the list of threatened and endangered species. The site has become an important one not only for visiting scientists, but for thousands of school children each year on educational trips, plus those attending the variety of adult education courses. It is a rare visitor who leaves the gardens without being better informed. The gardens are open daily (except 24th-25th December) from 10am. www.kew.org/wakehurst.

How did the idea of a reunion tour idea come together in the first place? It was because of a chance meeting with Chris Bartholomew, an ‘old school’ promoter. He was more of a rock music promoter back in the 80s but always liked Fizz. He met Jay with the prospect of using her in a film and they started talking about the fact that Mike, Jay and I have reformed and he jumped at the opportunity to promote the tour. We have named it ‘Paradise Regained’ and a percentage of profits will go to a charity Entertainment Workshops, Rye Harbour for disadvantaged children who want to learn about the music business. Was it an involved process to get it off the ground or did it come easily? Once we had all agreed to do the tour starting April next year, Chris and his business partner started the ball rolling, booking a few gigs around the country. Within a couple of days the list had grown and we are now up to between 30-40 UK gigs alone. European gigs will follow next Autumn and the Middle East and Australasia around Christmas next year! How does it feel to be back together after all this time? We were reunited back in 2008 for a TV programme called Pop Goes The Band and shortly after that, we started to do the odd gig together. Up to now there have been corporate gigs and 80s festivals, but this will be the first major tour we have done together for decades! It is so much more fun than it used to be plus we are in control now, whereas back in the 80s we were puppets, just doing as we were told. Do you all wish you’d done this sooner? Hmm.....probably not. We were all doing our own thing, plus 80s music really only became credible again from the year 2000. Now it seems people can’t get enough of it. Even my 20-year-old daughters, Kyla and Natalie, love 80s music. It’s definitely music that makes you smile! My daughters, by-the-way, will be our support act at Chequer Mead! What feedback have you had from fans so far? The fans are beside themselves with excitement! It will be so nice to take the show around the country to

places we haven’t been for years and years, probably since some of the fans were children. The great thing is that they bring their own children. We realised that when we did a short tour in 2009. We had T-shirts printed and only had a few small sizes, thinking most of the fans would prefer medium or large. At the end of the gigs as we were leaving the stage door, there were the fans waiting for autographs with their children wearing the small T-shirts! What are you all most looking forward to with the tour? What does the future hold? We have been using a guest singer recently and it just feels right to be 4 again. It certainly helps the vocals and makes more sense of the dance routines - and yes, we still have our skirts ripped off! I suppose what I am looking forward to most of all is the reaction from the fans at seeing Fizz on stage as it used to look and sound. As for the future, well, we have recently been discussing a new album to coincide with the tour which is very exciting. It will also be great to visit countries where Fizz had hits and perform live, especially Australia. There’s life in the old dogs yet!!!

Tickets for the East Grinstead Show at Chequer Mead are available on, 01342 302000 www.chequermead.org.uk For more information on all UK Tour Dates, please check out the website - www.formerlyofbucksfizz.co.uk 24 • November 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

A Cavitation machine is essentially a non-surgical lipo-suction machine. By means of ultra-sound, stubborn areas of fat and cellulite can be slimmed down. Inevitably, Cavitation machines are taking the Health and Beauty world by storm. This process creates bubbles in the fat cells which then expand and implode reducing them to their liquid form which is broken down and expelled by the body. Results will often be seen immediately. What’s even better is the process continues to work over a number of weeks as the body naturally clears the fatty deposits. Without any surgery or pain, you can expect to be slimmer and have less or no cellulite. Putting a price on priceless. In this issue, Annie Streeter and Jane Cowans, Agents at the Haywards Heath office of NFU Mutual, answer your questions about valuing your possessions:

lost or stolen jewellery and watches - the sentimental loss can be equal to, if not greater, than the financial loss suffered.

Which items do homeowners typically undervalue or overlook when calculating their home contents insurance? Artwork, jewellery and watches, especially those items which have been inherited which may have appreciated in value without anyone realising. We recommend that valuations are revisited every three years as things like gold and art can appreciate steeply over this time. NFU Mutual offers access to valuation experts with wide ranging experience. If something is of sentimental value, surely it doesn’t matter what it’s worth? Enjoying an object or piece of art for the memories it holds and its significance to your family is part of the beauty of heirlooms; however, if the item is lost, damaged or stolen, it affects a family’s ability to pass it down. By correctly insuring items, future generations will not miss out on their sentimental importance or financial benefits. How common are insurance claims for jewellery & watches? In 2013, NFU Mutual paid out £3.4 million for

What should I look for when choosing an insurer for my home & contents? It’s important to look at the ‘whole package’ – service, cover and price. It can be tempting to simply select on the basis of cost; however, you should satisfy yourself that the level of cover and service provided will meet your needs. The true test of an insurance company is will come when you have to make a claim. It’s well worth talking to other people about their experiences and asking for testimonials. How important are local branches? Our customers tell us they find it a pleasure and reassuring to discuss their requirements face-to-face in a relaxed atmosphere where we have a detailed knowledge of the area and the many local issues which might affect a customer’s insurance needs.

The Finishing Touch Hair & Beauty Round, square, heart shaped face?

Highlight:

The perfect face shape is oval, and whatever face shape you have it can be altered to oval. All you need to know is how to highlight and contour the face. With highlighting and contouring it is important to blend it into the foundation as it is not supposed to look as if you have done it. You match your foundation to your skin colour and apply it, once that is done you then contour the areas of the face you don’t want to be seen. So if you have a wide nose you would contour down the sides of it to hide them. You highlight the areas you do want to be seen so you would highlight your cupids bow and tops of the eyes to make them look lifted.

Down the top of the nose Above the cheeks Just under the eyebrow Top corner of the eye Cupid’s bow (above the lip)

You should contour with 2 shades darker than your normal foundation and highlight with 2 shades lighter. A list below is what you should highlight and what you should contour:

Contour:

Christmas Vouchers are now available from Finishing Touch.

Either side of the nose Under your cheek bone Around the face although in separate lines not just one line all around the face. Bottom of the chin

You can also contour under your chin if you have a double chin and it makes it less visible. If you have any questions please feel free to either email tfthairandbeauty@gmail.com or call 01342826005 and speak to Jasmine.

G row fo r M o! Movember, the international phenomenon, started in Adelaide, Australia in 2003 by a group of men as a fun thing to do to bring back the rarely-seen moustache and raise money for charity at the same time. The word ‘Movember’ was coined from November and Moustache as this was the chosen month in which the prize-whiskers were grown. In a few years it became an international event, supporting men’s health charities across the globe while wonderful whiskers were cultivated everywhere. £346 million has been raised for charity since 2003!

Some more suggestions:

“Hulk Hogan” moustache style

“Chevron” moustache style

Need some Movember inspiration? Here are some styles to choose from:

“Dalí” moustache style

Au Natural – Moustache may be styled without aids. Keep it simple!

“Fu Manchu” or “Asian Tojo Master” moustache style

Hungarian – Big and bushy, beginning from the middle of the upper lip and pulled to the side. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5 cm beyond the end of the upper lip. Don’t forgot, no more than 1.5cm! Dalí – narrow, long points bent or curved steeply upward; areas past the corner of the mouth must be shaved. Artificial styling aids needed. Named after Salvador Dalí.

The Moscars

English moustache – narrow, beginning at the middle of the upper lip the whiskers are very long and pulled to the side, slightly curled; the ends are pointed slightly upward; areas past the corner of the mouth usually shaved. Artificial styling may be needed. Do it for your country, what what!

If you’re feeling rather plucky about your moustache and your fundraising you can submit a video to showcase your involvement in the movement for a chance to win a prize in one of several categories. In 2012 Stan Lee was head judge!

Imperial – whiskers growing from both the upper lip and cheeks, curled upward. Sure to make you feel aloof.

The International Man of Movember is chosen from 21 national winners all over the world to wear the crown and be the face of Movember for a whole year! Each national Man of Movember winner is voted for at the country’s main Gala Parté held at the end of November.

Freestyle – All moustaches that do not match other classes. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5 cm beyond the end of the upper lip. Aids are allowed. 30 • November 2014 • Ashdown Forest Living

International Man of Movember

Even if you can’t hit the giddy heights of International Man of Movember, maybe Man of Movember for the Ashdown Forest area is an accolade worth achieving; after all, it’s all for a good cause! And for the growing trend of Beard-bearers, I’m afraid those don’t count - or goatees. Tasches only... so get the wax out and have some fun this month.

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you November think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Testimonial I have used Lewis Gibbs of Imperial Framing Ltd, for a number of jobs. Lewis listens and carries out his work to his client’s specification. He gets the job done quietly and efficiently with a really positive attitude. Compared to larger building companies in the area where your money gets sucked by admin costs and the workforce time and again are poorly skilled, it pays to work on a one to one basis with Lewis. His quotes are sensible; I highly recommend him.” Simon W. Desmond, Newick, East Sussex 2013

Win Tickets to see ‘Babes in the Wood’ The Community Panto by the Crowborough Players

This panto, like many panto versions of Babes in the Wood, blends the fairy tale with Robin Hood, Maid Marian and of course the evil Sheriff. It is set in Crowborough where E. Vill Sherife, the Baron of Wealden, holds sway over the terrified townsfolk. The Baron is short of cash to fund his plan to turn the Ashdown Forest into a vast housing estate. His cunning plan is to steal the inheritance of the Babes in the Wood, the daughters of the Earl of Crowborough. He has mysteriously disappeared, leaving them to be brought up by their Nanny.

To win a family ticket for the 14th December matinee performance, simply answer the following question:

It is up to the Sheriff’s ward, Maid Marian (who has by now met Robin Hood and his merry men) to rescue the Babes, helped by the magical Fairy Liquid. There are still dangers to overcome however, because in the Ashdown Forest lurks the evil Witch of the Woods....

We are a small local charity, called Engage South East. The charity’s main aims are to bring local communities together, combating social isolation and loneliness, in order to improve the quality of life for older people. We encourage local volunteering with over 20 volunteers helping us at the moment. We also support people with memory loss and dementia and their carers. We have two clubs, the TN22 and TN22 Plus club and we meet at Hadlow Down village hall, near Uckfield. TN22 Club Is a social day club for older people running from 11am – 2pm on alternate Wednesdays. It offers friendship and fun for people living in isolated rural communities. There are different activities available each time and interesting speakers attend. One of the highlights of the day is a freshly prepared 2-course lunch. Also on offer is a film club held monthly in the afternoon and summer outings. This year we visited Firle Place, Merriments and celebrated Older People’s Day with a tea dance. Often people find it hard to get out and we have a team of volunteer drivers who can pick up and take home in neighbouring towns and villages. Volunteers – we are always looking for new volunteers. So if you are interested in volunteering or want to know more about the clubs, please contact Suzanne on 07864 533884. info@ashdownforestliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

Haywards Heath & District Probus Club approaches its 30th birthday As the name suggests, Probus is a club for retired and semi retired professional and business people, primarily to replace the fellowship lost when they retire, and to make new friends brought together in a relaxed environment over a regular lunch. Exhibition: On the first Saturday of every month at The Brambletye Hotel, Forest Row, a selection of professional artists will participate in Art Soufflé, a pop up gallery. The idea is the brainchild of art curator, Samantha van Dalen, fresh from her successful exhibition at the Kingscote Estate. Ample free parking, bar and eating facilities at the hotel means that there is no reason not to put this in the diary! Participating artists on the 1st November are Gill Bustamante (see front cover painting, ‘Sussex Poppies’ which will be at the first exhibition), William de Wilde, Pierre Chalory, amongst others, who are all represented by Samantha. Professional artists are welcome to contact Samantha van Dalen at samantha@artsouffle.co.uk should they wish to exhibit at future soufflés! www.artsouffle.co.uk

Hundred Acre Wood: One of the world’s favourite fictional destinations! The website, www.justtheflight.co.uk , has put together ‘50 Fictional Destinations you can actually visit’. The setting and location of a hit movie or a favourite novel can be integral to the story and the reason it is easy to get wrapped up in a world created by the author or director. Some places are so thoroughly imagined by their creators, you forget they aren’t real! ‘Hundred Acre Wood’ of Winnie-the-Pooh fame in Ashdown Forest is one of those such places, the real name of which is actually ‘Five Hundred Acre Wood’ - oddly enough, there is an actual ‘Hundred Acre Wood’ near Burgess Hill. Whether the inspiration behind these fictional destinations is based on a real town, on the creator’s life experiences, or just their vivid imagination, the idea of actually visiting locations is definitely an attractive one for many of the world’s travellers.
