Dear Sariah....
The beautiful Scotney Castle has lots to offer us in terms of intrigue... a newly released illustrated book about the landmark goes into glorious (and sometimes gory) detail - see our article. Winnie-the-Pooh continues his ubiquitous reign as a new exhibition in the V&A is soon to be unveiled - see our feature. If there are any local charities or community groups who need promotion, please do drop us a line anytime. Equally if there are other local goings-on, news, history etc. that we should be printing, please tell us! As ever, thank you for supporting our local businesses. We welcome all feedback.

1917 – 2017 Passchendaele
As we commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele in 2017 our remembrance of the 1st World War continues to be very poignant. include a cake and produce stall. Do pop in for a chat and support the appeal in the process. This year as this is ‘Armistice Day’, there will be a short ‘Act of Remembrance’ at the War Memorial, mustering at 10.50am for 11am. All are welcome to join us for this.
This year Remembrance Sunday falls on the 12th November, with Armistice Day on Saturday the 11th. Although the work of the Royal British Legion continues through the year supporting our armed services, late October, early November is probably our busiest time with the main 'Poppy Appeal' starting around the 28th October. This year in Forest Row, as last year, we have decided not to do a house to house collection. Instead, as always, poppies, crosses etc. will be available in all the shops and other outlets and there will be two street collections on Saturdays, 4th and 11th November. If you are able to help with this, I am sure Carolyn Aitken on 01342 823611 or Susie Kemp on 01342 822784 will be pleased to hear from you.
Remembrance Sunday falls on the 12th November. Our service as always takes place at Holy Trinity Church. We begin with the wreath laying at the War Memorial starting at 10.30am, followed by the service in church. We encourage everyone to attend, especially as we remember all those who have died in conflict, looking back particularly at the 1st and 2nd World War as well as in recent times. The R.B.L. is always looking for new members. You don't have to be ex-service, just be prepared to support our servicemen and their families and all the Royal British Legion does to help them, in so many different ways. If you are interested, please contact our membership secretary Jane Wogan on 01342 825382
As part of the 'Poppy Appeal', there will be a Recital in Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 4th November at 2pm. Soloists will include soprano Claire Watkins and tenor Gareth Dafydd Morris, along with organist/pianist Simon Morris. I know those who have attended in the past, will know you are in for a very enjoyable occasion. The afternoon slot has been extremely popular in recent years, so we are hoping for a good audience again.

Scotney Castle: Lives come and go, the castle remains Newly released, 'A Castle in England', is a unique collaboration between writer Jamie Rhodes and the National Trust; a graphic novel which plunges the reader into the rich and often dark history of nearby Scotney Castle, near Lamberhurst. Five rising stars from the UK comics scene also help to recreate the castle’s past by illustration, from the Medieval to the Edwardian ages. The book contains five short stories that mix fiction with fact, creating a visually striking graphic collection. The fairytalesque Scotney Castle has featured in a Squeeze music video and was a bolthole for Margaret Thatcher during the 70s and
80s as well as giving hours of delight to the thousands of yearly visitors. However Scotney has witnessed some 'intense' days in 700 years of tumultuous history, in contrast to its cosy position, surrounded by beautiful Kent countryside in the Bewl River valley.
Author Rhodes spent three months as Writer in Residence at Scotney, working with the castle archivists to find unusual material. He thoroughly explored the Victorian “new” castle, studying treasures and curios, as mounted hyena heads and old bottles that had languished for centuries in the moat. He wandered the grounds and romantic ruins of the old castle, talking to rangers, gardeners, etc. for a fully immersive experience. 'Each castle is a piece of art wrought from its own unique brushstrokes of struggles, victories, marriages, subterfuge, births, and deaths.' Rhodes writes, 'Lives come and go, but the castle remains'. Continues over the page.

SCOTNEY CASTLE: LIVES COME AND GO, THE CASTLE REMAINS CONTINUED
concealed him in secret areas of the castle. 'This was an enormous risk, and one which stands as testament to the strength of the family’s beliefs and possibly their resentment towards the monarchy for the forced marriage of their daughter'. For 6 years the priest remained in hiding at Scotney. When the Justices of the Peace raided the castle in 1597, records revealed that the Darell family and their servants were sent to Newgate Prison for a year, with one 'Mistress Darell' being allowed to leave to deliver a child at Scotney during this time. Perhaps a testament to the intricacies of Scotney's architecture and 'hiding holes':
Here is a little extract from the book covering the Elizabethan period:
'The Justices did not find the priest, but raided the house again one year later, confining the family to a single room over the gatehouse whilst they searched the property. This time, the priest escaped by jumping into the moat and swimming to freedom whilst his servant distracted the Justices by shouting that their horses were being stolen. The priest was never seen again'.
'In this period, the family who owned Scotney Castle were devout Catholics. Thomas Darell II inherited the castle in September 1558 with Mary I on the throne, however, Mary died in November the same year and with her, England ceased to be a Catholic nation. Elizabeth I came to the throne and forced England to become a Protestant nation. Those like the Darell family, who continued to adhere to Catholicism, suffered religious persecution'.
The Darrells remained the 'kings of the castle' at Scotney for many years to come, in the 18th century the roguish Arthur Darrell took the reigns when his older brother died; a reputed smuggler, he faked his own death! More about that particular tale in the book...
'In 1563 Protestant poet and writer, Barnabe Googe, sought to marry Thomas’ daughter, Mary Darell. Thomas resisted the marriage, refusing to give consent, and though he could not openly say this was on religious grounds it is quite likely the reason. However, Barnabe Googe was a relative of Queen Elizabeth’s chief advisor, Sir William Cecil, who ordered the Archbishop of Canterbury to intervene. Mary Darell was forcibly removed from the Darell household until her father relented, which he quickly did; there was no telling what would happen if Thomas continued to resist the marriage'.
The graphic novel, 'A Castle in England', by James Rhodes & Various Artists, is supported by the Arts Council England and the National Trust. Price £14.99, published by Nobrow.
In 1591, undoubtedly hearing rumours of their catholic leanings, a celebrated Catholic priest arrived at the castle seeking refuge. The family

Repair for more Wear Last month the first Forest Row Repair Cafe officially opened its doors to the community with a team of 14 volunteer experts and helpers. The cafe is a place which people can bring their broken things to fix, a vast range of items can be catered for from bikes to an iron, clothes to lawnmowers. The inaugural cafe proved very popular and received lots of positive feedback; the buzz in the room was very encouraging. They were also supported by local businesses who donated goods to use in the cafĂŠ to keep the volunteers and visitors refreshed and fed. This exciting new Forest Row venture is being run by the Parish Council as a way to try and stop so many items simply being thrown away rather than fixed, especially when it can be something simple! The idea originated in Amsterdam in 2009 and their successful model has now spread across the world with over 1,300 Repair Cafes now regularly running, with 45 here in the UK.
The wonderful volunteer experts have knowledge of electrical items, bikes, computers, watches, clocks, general maintenance, woodwork and a fabulous team of seamstresses with a vast knowledge of all things sewing, knitting and mending. So, if your jeans need patching, your clock has stopped working or you just have no idea why your kettle won't boil, bring them to see if they are 'fixable' . While you sit and learn a new skill with your repairer, the Repair Cafe will also have homemade cakes and refreshments for sale to those attending to enjoy.
All repairs are free but donations are gratefully received towards ongoing costs of the service. The next Repair CafĂŠ is on Saturday November 4th at the Community Centre from 10 till 1pm (registration of items will close at 12.30 to allow time for your item to be fixed). The goal is for the cafe to become a monthly vibrant and fun place to visit with members of the community getting involved and supporting their local environment and ultimately the planet. If you would like to get involved, if you have a skill you would like to share, please get in touch. They also need bake-a-cakers too! If you have any questions please call Sara Smart on 01342 822661, email repaircafe@forestrow.gov. uk . Please see the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ reapaircafeforestrow for updates and lists of which experts will be at each session. There is also a page on www.forestrow.gov.uk to find out more.

CHOCOLATE TORTE WITH PEANUT SORBET & BLACKBERRY SAUCECONTINUED
Sift the cocoa powder into the egg yolks and mix well. Gently fold the meringue into the egg yolk and cocoa powder mixture a third at a time. Spread evenly into a shallow, paper-lined baking tray so the sponge mix is approximately 1cm thick.
cream machine until desired consistency is reached. For the blackberry sauce, combine the sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to 104˚C. Add the blackberries and remove from the heat. Leave to sit for thirty minutes before pushing through a fine chinois or sieve. Refrigerate until ready for use.
Bake for 5-8 minutes in the preheated oven until it starts to come away from the edges of the tray. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with caster sugar. Turn onto a cooling rack and remove the paper while still warm.
Assembly To assemble, cut the sponge into two evenly sized pieces. Place half the sponge into a second tray that has been lined with cling film. Pour over half the chocolate mousse. Place the remaining sponge on top of the mousse and then spread the remaining mousse on top, before chilling in the freezer until firm.
Glaze Start the glaze by soaking the gelatine in cold water. Combine the water, caster sugar, cocoa powder and cream and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat. Remove the gelatine from the water and squeeze out any excess. Add to the hot cream mixture and whisk until combined.
Remove from the freezer and cut into 1.5 cm x 5 cm pieces. Place the pieces onto a cooling rack with a tray underneath. Coat with the glaze using a ladle and leave to set in the fridge for at least two hours.
Strain the mixture into a pouring jug and leave in a warm place as it will be used to coat the sponge at a later stage.
Plate with the peanut butter sorbet and blackberry sauce.
Sorbet For the sorbet, combine the water, sugar and glucose in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Once the syrup has cooled, combine with the peanuts in a blender and blitz until smooth. Pass through a fine strainer. Churn in an ice

KITCHEN BESPOKE'S MOVING UP
Last month, Kitchens Bespoke marked their 10th year of successful trading in East Grinstead by taking a grand leap of expansion and moving up the London Road to larger premises. The newly opened shop will give those looking for a kitchen from a local, quality company a greater choice of products to view, showcasing the latest designs. You can also find fabulous new appliances and accessories, as well as a new fitted bedroom furniture range. Kitchens Bespoke is originally the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years now. Ten years ago she decided to set up her own ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets; she has not looked back since. The success of this venture meant her husband, Guy, joined her a couple of years later to create what is now a well-established, local family-run business.
Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that their kitchens are more affordable than you might think. Along with an uncompromising dedication to quality, Rachael & Guy's ethos is based on a friendly, personal approach; offering an individual service with every project undertaken (large or small), so the project itself runs smoothly from beginning to end.
If you are thinking of improving your kitchen, then feel free to pop in for an informal, friendly chat and to take a look at some of the quality products on show. You will get ideas as well as guidance and advice. Investing in a good kitchen is the single most valuable improvement you can make to your home. It’s the one room that can really stand out as an aspirational showpiece for your property.
Kitchens Bespoke offers a free, no obligation full design service. For more information pop into the shop or call 01342 313133. www.kitchenbespoke.co.uk. Enquiries: 01342 300152

500 years of Secrets the rest was in twilight. It was as though for the first 400 years countless feet had passed through its doorways leaving only silence behind them."
© Allan T Adams
“We wanted to discover and capture everything we could about the house and the people who lived there and publish our findings for future owners of the house over the next 500 years”, added Peter. Many of the original features are again clearly visible, such as the once-grand dais beam and screen and several apotropaic marks which were scratched and burned into timbers to protect the house against evil influences.
The previously unknown history of a 500-yearold yeoman’s house in the village of Chailey has been captured in a beautifully illustrated 320-page book by the current owners, local historians Peter and Sally Varlow.
Though a novice, Peter carried out the impressive feat of measuring every beam in the house to work out where the timbers would have been. Such was the level of expertise that he was invited to give a talk at the Vernacular Architecture Group’s annual conference and his work was published as an academic paper.
In An Old House is the result of six years of meticulous research by Peter and Sally into the history of Coppard’s, a late-medieval hall house built in 1473 as the substantial new home of a status-conscious yeoman, the first of the new middle classes to emerge from England’s strictly feudal society. Not only does the book tell the fascinating story of the early Coppards, a notable Sussex family, their house and the surrounding area, it also represents pioneering work into timber measuring and reconstruction.
We popped a few questions to Peter and Sally about the project: When you acquired the house, did you have any idea it would provide a historical labour of love?
Peter and Sally bought one half of Coppard’s in 1982 and when they acquired the other half in 2008 they began the task of restoring the two cottages back to the original structure of one house. This labour of love, supported by the expert advice of many interested professionals, inspired them to undertake the magnum opus of reconstructing the entire history of the house and its occupants, starting with an almost blank canvas.
We were just looking for a country cottage with roses round the door. This one had honeysuckle, actually! What was the highlight of your historical discoveries’ journey? Finding the oak dais screen, dating to 1473 and still intact behind modern panelling, was perhaps the greatest thrill.
Sally explained, “With Coppard’s, there was nothing earlier than 20th-century deeds;

500 YEARS OF SECRETS CONTINUED
We do hope that our project and the book will help owners of timber-framed buildings to see what they can find out about their own house. There’s much, much more to discover than one can possibly imagine. What's next for the cottage? Well, we’re putting 50 copies up in the ‘long lofte’ (as William Coppard called it in 1614) which we hope will provide each new owner with a copy for the next 500 years!
What was the most challenging aspect of restoring the home?
In An Old House is stocked at Barnett’s at Wadhurst; the Tudor Bookshop, East Grinstead. It can also be purchased on: www.pomegranatepress.co.uk/sussex.
Attention to detail: hundreds of small repair jobs. A ‘Grand Plan’ to ‘restore’ a house too often means that original material from many succeeding eras is going to be destroyed, and with it the whole patina and atmosphere of the place can be lost. It’s OK to add, but not to take away. What do you hope this project will give to the local history of the area?

Dear Sariah,
you could both live with, agree it, and then stick to it. With elaborate weddings costing an average of £27,000, it’s understandable that he is anxious about the money, but there are some fabulous money saving tips that will help you plan the most perfect of days without a price tag to match, if you are willing to put in a bit of DIY effort. Pinterest has the most amazing ideas for homemade invitations, table centres and decorations. Get your friends and family involved. Who’s the cake maker in your circle? Can you assemble a team from those who love you who will take on the food? Is there someone with a creative hand who could put together some amazing flower arrangements? A fantastic website, www.hitched.co.uk gives some amazing ideas on how to host the perfect wedding for £3,000. Be realistic about what you can afford and don’t compare the weddings of your friends to the special day that you can both create. A lower budget wedding can be every bit as special, and is often more so because it is so personal, than a wedding organised with an endless money pot and allows a couple to really show their personalities. I wish you the very best of days. And remember, at the centre of the wedding is a couple who love each other. Just with that, your day will be pretty perfect.
I have recently got engaged and would like to have the wedding of my dreams. My fiancé wants to have a tiny, low key wedding and put any savings made towards a deposit for a house. I understand his view but I just feel that all my friends are having the most amazing days of their life with an incredible wedding and he wants us to go quietly to a registry office with a few family members and friends. I’m not sure how to approach this. - Ms. W Firstly, congratulations on your engagement. It’s an exciting time for you both but can often be accompanied by a lot of wedding planning stress, especially if you both have different ideas of the sort of wedding it should be. Have a little planning meeting. Both write a list of things that you feel are important to each of you, things that you wouldn’t want the wedding to be without and things that perhaps things that aren’t so important and you could omit and then look at how you can meet in the middle. Somewhere between the big wedding and registry office. Let him know that you need more than a small ceremony in the registry office but that you appreciate his concerns about money. If your fiancé’s concerns stem only from the cost of a wedding, look at a budget that
Dear Sariah,
experience that brings lots of anxiety. Don’t feel pressurised in to continuing with it if it makes you feel uncomfortable. I know that this is the modern angle on meeting new people but sometimes, the old-fashioned way still has its place. You say that you don’t have much time to go socialising but perhaps, somewhere in your busy schedule, you can find some time to just focus on you. Rather than focusing on meeting that new Mr Right, perhaps you could focus on doing something that will be of real interest to you; an art class or some ballroom dancing or even joining a gym for example. Take the spotlight off the dating scene and go and have some fun. And who knows, perhaps he’s just waiting for you to sign up!!
I am in my 50s and my husband and I recently split up. He has moved on and our relationship is irreparable. I have started internet dating but it seems very scary and so far, I've frankly not enjoyed it. So, thinking of packing it in but then I am worried I will never meet someone as I have little time to go out socialising. I am being encouraged to keep up with the online dating by friends for whom it has worked, but it's a bit of a drag and distraction from the kids. Please help. - Ms. G It's perfectly OK that you feel that internet dating might not be for you. Whilst it does work for many people, for others it can be a very stressful

Crawling Back from the Brink were carrying out ecological monitoring of heathland at Clumber Park. Diamond Spiders are a species of Philodromidae, a family of spiders commonly known as philodromid crab spiders. Philodromids are predatory and live on plant stems and leaves, they inject their prey with venom. However, they are not considered harmful to humans. The last recorded sightings of the Diamond Spider occurred here in the Ashdown Forest area at Legsheath, all the way back in 1930 and Duddleswell in 1969. They were thought extinct on these Isles, that was until last month, when it was spotted as far north from here as Nottinghamshire! However this rarest of spiders had only been recorded in the UK on three previous occasions; all of them in the South of England and two in this specific area. So if it is making a comeback, it's only a matter of time before it makes an appearance in our neck of the woods. The arachnid, known for its diamond-shaped black markings on its back, was found by two astonished National Trust volunteers who
The species is widespread in western and central Europe. Matt Shardlow, Chief Executive of Buglife, said, “We are absolutely delighted that this pretty little spider has been re-found, we had almost given up hope. "It is a testament to the crucial importance of charities like the National Trust saving and managing heathland habitats.” As we all know heathland abounds on the Ashdown Forest, so all visitors please keep your eyes peeled for Diamond Spiders in the months to come and record/report any sightings; smart phones at the ready!

ASHDOWN FOREST’S POOH COMING TO THE V&A Original drawings of Winniethe-Pooh will go on display at the V&A for the first time in nearly 40 years this December as part of the UK’s largest ever exhibition on Winniethe-Pooh, A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard. 'Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic' will be a multi-sensory, playful exhibition that will explore the magical world of Pooh. It will reveal the real people, relationships and inspirations behind the star of the most popular children’s books of all time; a world representing friendship, simple joys and the curious yet gentle nature of a child’s imagination. New light will be shed on the creative collaboration between Milne and Shepard. The exhibition will explore Milne’s storytelling including his wonderful and humorous use of language and look at how Shepard produced

ASHDOWN FOREST’S POOH COMING TO THE V&A CONTINUED
from the Royal Collection.
Piglet and Christopher Robin will go on display side by side; international collectors are lending the two works especially for the exhibition. There will also be video and audio clips, including a 1929 recording of Milne reading Winnie-the-Pooh. As well as featuring the largest ever selection of prints and drawings, the exhibition will include a largescale, immersive family section reimagining scenes from the most famous stories such as Poohsticks Bridge, the Bee Tree and Eeyore’s house, with many interactive elements to engage younger visitors, including dressing up areas, storytelling trees and a ‘picnic’ drawing table.
It will also explore how Pooh and Friends have entered our collective imagination, extending beyond the original stories into global popular culture through Walt Disney. And show how Pooh’s story, including his valuable life lessons on friendship, have stood the test of time with families around the world. It will look at the real life British inspirations behind the stories - A.A. CROWBOROUGH LION’S NEWS our guests. Our Christmas carols collection takes place on 17th - 22nd Dec with Father Christmas and his sleigh visiting young children around the town with his big bag of sweets.
Our next event is on the 4th Nov when we will be at the town’s annual firework display to help raise funds for the Mayor’s charity ‘The Friends of Crowborough Hospital’. The weeks before Christmas are a very busy time for us beginning with the town fair on 24th Nov where Father Christmas will delight young children in the Town Hall grotto, quickly followed on 3rd Dec by our marshalling of the Crowborough Runners 10k event, an excellent funds raiser for us.
New this year will be our Christmas town centre collection on 21st – 23rd Dec, next to the illuminated Christmas tree. Father Christmas will be there with his helpers to help everyone get into the festive mood just before the big day. If you know of any person or organisation who you feel would benefit from our help, or if you feel you would like to give your time to help us raise funds, or even become a lion, please contact: David Martin 01892 652300 or email loxfield@gmail.com.
This year our Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch with musical entertainment is on 9th Dec when all members of the club will assist to make the day as enjoyable as possible for
Peace and joy to you all.
