PREPARE FOR WINTER!
Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Reinoud Ford
Bartosz Woroch’s
Ce
llist Reinoud Ford, now a London resident, grew up in Forest Row. At the age of eight, he started to learn to play the cello with local cellist Marina Logie who has helped many of her students on to promising career paths. At age 13, Reinoud was given a scholarship to the Yehudi Menuhin School from which he graduated aged eighteen. The Menuhin School is based in Cobham, Surrey, and specialises in the (musical) education of promising string and piano players. The school was founded by the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin and has brought forth the likes of Nigel Kennedy and Nicola Benedetti. Menuhin students are known to sustain a remarkable bond during their careers: ten of the performers in this Festival are Menuhin School alumni! Reinoud went on to (and graduated from) the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with three first-class degrees. Reinoud now performs as a soloist, is a member of several ensembles and plays in various orchestras. He also much enjoys contemporary music often accompanying and collaborating with charismatic singersongwriter Keaton Henson. Reinoud was very much involved in local music-making as a young musician and was for many years a member of the now-retired Jupiter Chamber Orchestra. Last year, Reinoud was able to turn his dream of “giving back to the local musical community” into reality, by organising the first Ashdown Music Festival in November of 2012. His philosophy: to showcase the talent of both local and London-based artists in a weekend of dazzling musicmaking of the highest quality. Local audiences responded with great enthusiasm to this new venture, with all three concerts selling out. Many enthused about the evident joy the musicians experienced when making music together, a joy in which the audience shared. Ashdown Music Festival returns on November 1st this year! Although organising such an occasion is easier in some respects the second time around, in many ways the task is more daunting: one must meet or indeed exceed audience expectation! Reinoud thinks you will agree this year’s programme promises to do just that. An elite cast of • October 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

musicians will take to the stage, veterans of the Carnegie Hall, New York and venues such as the Wigmore Hall and Royal Albert Hall in London. Due to popular demand, our local Young Musician of the Year 2012 cellist Laura van der Heijden returns in the Gala Concert on Sunday November 3rd. This concert will be a very special occasion as Reinoud has commissioned an arrangement of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for the cello octet Cellophony and for solo violin. This performance will be a World Premiere, therefore not to be missed! There is huge interest in this commission on the London music scene. The Forest Row Eurythmists also return by popular demand, performing to the slow movement of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden.

2nd November, The Long Room, Michael Hall School, Forest Row, 4pm Concert to include: Award-Winning Guitar Duo and the legendary “Trout” Quintet by Schubert.

History Lindfield Bonfire Society Members are very proud of the long tradition of bonfire in Lindfield. The earliest records of 5th of November celebrations date back to 1881 with customary street fires, dragging of tar barrels and much riotous behaviour. There were three bonfires: one on the Common, one outside the Bent Arms and a third in front of the Red Lion. The bonfire boys were an unruly lot and would burn anything they could lay their hands on. There is a report that one year a gentleman who was cheering the boys on to keep adding fuel to the fire discovered the next morning that the wood had been appropriated from his own garden! During the celebration at the end of the Siege of Mafeking in 1900, things got really out of hand when a wagon loaded with wood attempted to pass the bonfire outside the Bent Arms. The horses were set loose, and the wagon and its load were put into the fire and destroyed. The paint on the Bent Arms was left blistered and ruined. The result of this mayhem was that about 20 men were fined half a crown each. Ordinarily, the Police stood by and allowed the riotous behaviour to continue, unable or unwilling to interfere. On the night of the 5th the authorities usually had to remove the toll gates for safe keeping, but in 1884 the road was converted into a parish road. To the rejoicing of local people the gates were finally allowed to be burned. Finally, in 1894, following pressure from disgruntled locals and the authorities, the Society was formed with the aim of holding an organised display in the village every 5th November. The tradition continued • October 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
through the 1900s, but was suspended during the First World War. During the 1920s and 30s the Anscombe family were instrumental in keeping the celebration going, and the highlight in 1935 was a giant set piece featuring the Loch Ness Monster! During the 1950s the bonfire building began at least a week before but was set ablaze by hooligans so frantic rebuilding followed. In the 1960s Bonfire Night continued to be widely supported, especially in 1960 when Lewes had to cancel their celebrations due to flooding – the Lindfield fire was lit that night by 400 torches! As the 1970s progressed, the Society nearly folded due to a severe lack of members – a problem we also face today. In 1979 the set piece was a spectacular windmill with moving sails. In the 1980s Mr Martin Durrant began to build the Guy which has topped 15 feet high on occasion. Indeed, there was one year when the Guy couldn’t join the procession because it was too tall to go under the telephone lines on the route! We are now into the 21st century, and determined to continue this tradition. The cost of this event rises every year, and legislation has also increased. Lindfield Bonfire Society is a non-profit making organisation, and in order to survive and entertain we really need the support of the local community, both financially and practically. If you are interested in becoming a member or how you can give support to this long tradition please email: lindfieldbonfiresoc@gmail.com. The next Bonfire Society Celebration is on Tuesday 5th November. See: www.lindfieldbonfiresociety.co.uk.

Jollof rice
Serves: 8 adults Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 30 mins
Probably the most popular dish in the western region of Africa, Jollof rice is a one-pot dish to relish. Its origins are unclear, but it gets its name from the Wolof language where it is known as Benachin meaning ‘one pot’. Each region has its variation on this dish, but the results are always the same - tasty!
What to do:
Ingredients: 400g plum tomatoes 1 medium onion roughly chopped 1 red pepper deseeded and chopped 100g tomato puree 1 bay leaf 1 garlic clove crushed ¼ tsp curry powder ¼ tsp dried thyme 700ml vegetable or chicken stock 500g easy cook long grain white rice 1 pinch ground black pepper
1. Liquidise the tomatoes, onion and pepper in a blender or food processor. Tip into a large saucepan, then cover and cook over a medium-high heat for 6-8 minutes. Add the tomato puree, bay leaf, garlic, curry powder and thyme. Simmer for a further 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Add the stock or water and bring to boil. 3. Add the rice, stir, then cover and turn down the heat. Allow to simmer over a low heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender. During cooking, check and stir occasionally to make sure there is enough liquid to cook the rice. This is to ensure that the rice does not burn. If there is not enough, add a little extra water. Tip 1: You could use easy cook brown rice in this recipe, though it will take about an extra 10-15 minutes to cook, so keep an eye on the liquid and top up if necessary. Tip 2: Serve with grilled chicken, fish or meat and some brightly coloured steamed vegetables or a side salad. To save on time, fresh or frozen vegetables can be added to the pan towards the end of cooking and allowed to steam. This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life website
The GREEN on the GO 5 yrs ago when the Forest Row youth club was destroyed, the Parish Council convened a working party to moot ideas for the space, subsequently named: ‘Venue on the Green’. A building and surrounding space was designed, planning etc. passed and a referendum indicated 73% of residents needed services for the youth. It was also realised that the large group of elderly, isolated people needed a hub. Four of us became directors of FRYACC (Forest Row Youth & Community Co Ltd) this January and we’ve spent the first eight months building the company - getting charitable status, Gift Aid and ALL the plethora of legal paperwork... Following the successful opening of The Green Gym in September, 10 • October 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
plus the generous donation of the cost of the skateboard Park - a gift of £60,000 from His Highness Sultan Al Qasimi - Venue on The Green is now firmly on its way. Our main aim now is to fund the games pitch, the MUGA, for Summer 2014. Fundraising Our charity shop is up and running & the shop ‘Cadari’ operate a loyalty card scheme donating a percentage of profits. The Swan have offered their charity night, known as ‘Chewsday’ (Tuesdays!) when they will donate a whopping 50% of their evening supper profits. Events - November 16th:Christmas Shopping evening, wine, nibbles and carols. November 30th: Race Night in the Community Centre with a sumptuous Korean supper donated
by Sun Hwa - Cadari’s owner. At the village’s December market we have a wonderful stall offering Christmas presents and a chance for your children to make their own gifts. Just a tenner will help enormously - see Localgiving.com, after all, everybody stands to benefit from this great initiative! Monica Brown, FRYACC

Tom Pinches.
This has seen another successful year for wildlife and visitors at the RSPB’s Broadwater Warren nature reserve, near Groombridge, just north of Ashdown Forest. Reserve Warden, Tom Pinches said, “Rare and threatened birds such as woodlark and tree pipit had their best year here for over a decade, and turtle doves, which are Britain’s most threatened bird, have been heard calling here all summer”. Tom continued, “Nightjar numbers are increasing, as are bees and butterflies; while a kingfisher and even a grass snake were seen using the Decoy Pond over the summer.” Since purchasing the site in 2008, the conservation charity has embarked on a major restoration project to return the area to its former mix of open heath and rich native woodland. This has involved the removal of 50 hectares of a pine trees, planted in the 50s, with another third to go; the final felling will take place in 2015. Thus the views from Broadwater Forest Lane will be opened up. Heather has already started to grow in the newly cleared areas, encouraging butterflies, bees, reptiles and many different birds to make themselves at home. Steve Wheatley Weald Sites Manager (aka Tom’s boss) explained: “The felling work at Broadwater Warren will help to restore the mixed woodland and heathland landscape similar to Ashdown Forest. The site will probably never again be as open as the latter, it will be roughly 50% open heath to 50% mixed woodland - whereas the Ashdown Forest is about one third wooded. “Broadwater Warren provides a wildlife stepping stone 12 • October 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
for species spreading out from Ashdown Forest. This winter we’ll be undertaking targeted work for the Turtle Dove – one of the UKs most loved farmland and woodland edge birds, but one that has declined severely since the 70s. Ashdown Forest remains a stronghold so we’re keen to provide alternatives within the wider landscape. We’ll be doing work to improve foraging habitat for the birds through sowing the turtle dove seed mix, plus we hope to work with our neighbours to create short stretches of cultivated uncropped field margins”. As the restoration work continues, with the subsequent increase in wildlife, the reserve has seen a notable rise in the numbers of families and wildlife lovers visiting. It is becoming a superb alternative destination for nature enthusiasts, only 20 minutes from Ashdown Forest. Tom concluded, “Visitor feedback has been hugely positive this year. And this coming winter, 500 native trees will be planted including oak, hazel, hornbeam and rowan, with four ponds being created. We are in the process of installing benches and are asking our visitors where they would like them”. New signage and information boards will be installed and a new footbridge built over the end of the Decoy Pond. “It is ironic that a place once earmarked as a potential landfill site, with help from landfill companies (who assist with funding), is now being turned into something so special”. SPOTLIGHT ON RIDING FOR THE DISABLED Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is a respected national organisation with the active patronage of HRH Princess Anne. But it also has strong links to the Ashdown Forest area as the South East region has been sponsored for the last 8 years by local East Grinstead company, Cowan Architects (see page 9 for their advert). Budding riders from across the Forest area, both young and old, can chose from a number of vibrant and active groups locally which cater for a wide variety of disabilities. There’s also Carriage Driving available at local groups near Uckfield, Horsham and Guildford. Each RDA group is a separate charity with its own individual character and here’s a spotlight on those riding groups nearest to us.
ASHDOWN FOREST, Chelwood Gate By Mary Bell, marycbell@yahoo.co.uk The Ashdown Forest Group, based at Chelwood Equestrian Centre, Chelwood Gate, aims to give a positive equine experience to children through riding, long-reining, stable-management or maybe just stroking a pony. It’s well known that ponies have a very positive effect on our children and we aim to provide that in as varied and fun-filled way as possible. I am not a horsey person but about 15 years ago I was introduced to Ali Remmen who is! I was told she had a “knack” with children but I was totally unprepared for
the phenomenon that she is - an absolute whirlwind gathering people like me up in her wake. She works tirelessly and passionately with children and horses and she asked if I could set up a new group. I expected an involvement of about 2 - 3months max but I’m still here 4 years later with a fabulous and well-established group. Our children are all local, as are our volunteers, fundraising opportunities and donations. We are currently keen to find loan homes for our ponies from where they could be transported to our sessions. But our dream would be to have a purpose-built, dedicated centre where we could provide daily sessions for more disabled children. It is unbelievably rewarding to see the positive effects of these children just being around a pony which can be anything from improved mobility, increased speech and language to just a smile. So if anyone out there has an old barn or farm building on a couple of acres.....?
ERIDGE, Chuck Hatch By Jane Lom, www.eridgerda.org.uk Eridge RDA is run at Faircote Stud near Hartfield. We provide riding for 25 children and young people aged from 2 to 27 from East Sussex and Kent. The group was founded 45 years ago and we meet on Monday afternoons during term time, working with two local special schools as well as a group of parents who bring their children. The Group usually owns 1 or 2 ponies, living out with families for the rest of the week, and the rest are lent 14 • October 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living

to us. We try to have 5 - 6 ponies/ horses for each ride which have been carefully selected and suited to the rider’s needs. The lesson is led by a specially qualified instructor and each pony is joined by 3 helpers; one leading and two as side walkers. Our lessons always start with exercises designed by an occupational therapist followed by the option of a lesson in the school, a hack or some mounted games. Our riders can also take internal and external proficiency tests. We have to fundraise the £5000 that the Group needs to cover rent, shoeing costs, insurance and updating equipment. We work closely with other local equestrian groups and most recently collected £700 at Eridge Horse Trials. We have between 20 and 30 volunteers most weeks of all ages and walks of life. They receive training but some already have experience with working with these children or their professionals (therapists and psychologists). We also have students who join us just for a few weeks in the summer or during their GAP year.
COURT MEADOW, Ditchling Common By Anna Kerr, www.courtmeadow-rda.org.uk The Court Meadow Group was started in 1977 in Balcombe as therapy for some 20 children of Court Meadow School who had severe learning difficulties. A group of local mothers, whose children loved riding, wished to share this joy with others less able. In 1986 we moved to Ditchling Common Stud where the riding’s indoors and the children are encouraged to participate in as many activities as possible such as the Regional Fun Days where riders could qualify for the National Championships. We want to encourage each rider to learn to the best of their abilities, enjoy general riding and have fun loving the ponies. We now have 60 riders regularly. We also offer an Annual Camp Week at the Stud where the children come to learn how to groom, tack up, bath and feed the ponies. We have the use of 5 of our own ponies at present, owned by RDA friends but on long loan. The success has been seen in medals and smiles with the children proving their own capabilities at a high level of competition and socially as well. We also entered the Special Olympics UK with children winning bronze, silver and gold medals and once we’ve had a pupil included in the GB team competing in Ireland at the World Games. Last year Court Meadow amalgamated with Newick House in a new school called Woodlands Meed and riders with severe and medium learning difficulties are being taught together which has sometimes been challenging. But the goals remain the same and the rewards are in their happy faces. Ditchling Common Stud has recently been sold for development so we will have to move elsewhere before long which is a new challenge.

Samhain An Old Celtic Holiday
Samhain is a Gaelic Festival which symbolises the end of harvest time and the beginning of winter - the darker half of the year. It also marks the Feast of the Dead. Some view that this pagan festival, which falls on 31st Oct to the 1st of November, was later adopted by Christians and celebrated as All Hallow’s Eve - which later became Halloween. Whatever the case it is certainly celebrated at the same time of year. Many Pagans have and do consider it the Celtic New Year. Samhain has been celebrated in Britain for centuries in various guises. It is thought to be the time of year when the veils between this world and the otherworld were at their thinnest; when the spirits of the dead could most easily mingle with the living. ‘The Feast of the Dead’ aspect is not considered a morbid event as old age for its wisdom is valued and dying is accepted as a part of life as necessary and welcome as birth. Some consider this action of ‘remembering & honouring of the dead’ as being echoed by the Christian festival of Hallowmas: All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween) 31st October; All Saints Day 1st November, in honour of the Saints and All Souls Day 2nd November, in honour of the faithful departed. Reportedly to celebrate Samhain the Druids built huge sacred bonfires. Harvest food and animals were brought to share a communal dinner in celebration of the festival, during which time costumes were worn - usually animal heads and skins. Participants would also try and tell each other’s fortunes. And those born during the past year were formally welcomed into the community. After the festival, fires in homes were re-lit from the sacred bonfire, to help protect the family, as well as keep them warm during the winter months. And as autumn weather gets underway, a good hot bonfire seems like the perfect idea.

Hair &Beauty By
Sue Harrison The Finishing Touch My grey hairs are multiplying! I don’t what to dye my hair all over but what can I do to make them less noticeable? By adding a few low lights or high lights it will blend those unwanted grey/white hair into your natural hair. You can make your hair look over all a little lighter by some highlights or add some tones like warm chocolates, gold, cool mahogany, or rich reds. Just have a few to start, it will make such a difference and doing it at home is not an easy option so I suggest a visit to your hairdresser where they can advise on what would be the most flattering colours for you. I have noticed long ridges going down my nails, they look and feel awful, am I stuck with them as nail varnish doesn’t even hide them? Gently buff or lightly file your nails across the ridges and I do mean gently, preferably use a nail oil over the top of the nail to prevent excessive friction and drying out the nail plate. Run your finger across the nail until you feel it is smooth then apply some good hand cream and massage into the skin and cuticles. You can now paint your nails (remember to use a base coat first) or leave them natural with a buffed shine. Ridges can occur for many reasons, stress, poor diet, too frequent use of a nail hardener, damage to the nail bed or even age. A mini manicure is a treat but well worth it as hands are always on show. Please be aware that in some cases of nail ridging it may be a sign or symptom that is worth checking with your GP. Sue Harrison is an Independent Salon Advisor, if you would like your hair or beauty questions answered please email Tfthairandbeauty@gmail.com

Open Hands Open Hands is a locally based charity founded by Hadlow Down couple Stephen and Rebekka Maughan. Every year we publish news about the important work they do and their continuing progress; here is a Q&A with Stephen:
What is Open Hands? Open Hands is a Sussex charity dedicated to helping abandoned and destitute children, and young people in Romania. We support the poorest and most disadvantaged in this country.
Why do you work in Romania? Despite being an EU country, Romania remains an extremely poor country. According to the latest figures from the World Band 25% of people and 1 in 3 children live under the poverty line of $1 a day. The healthcare and economy is close to collapse, and widespread corruption and a lack of funding has left the fragile social system unable to cope with the increasing difficulties hard working Romanians face. Child abandonment is, sadly, still a huge problem in Romania. Experts estimate that every year between 3000-4000 children are abandoned by their parents. After a volunteer trip to Romania in 2008 we witnessed firsthand some horrendous conditions many children have to live in and so decided to offer our help and so set up Open Hands.
20 • October 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
What kind of work do you do in Romania? Over the past few years we have been involved in many projects which offer relief to very vulnerable children. Our mission has always been to be a voice for those living in extreme poverty, those who cannot speak for themselves. We are very concerned about the plight of children who grow up without having their most basic needs of food, clothing and adequate shelter met. Many children live vulnerable lives and poverty and neglect make them easy targets for abuse. We have just expanded our family support program which aims to transform the lives by improving living conditions, providing food, medical care and giving families access to social services. The main aim of our family support programme is to enable the children to attend school which in time will help them to escape the poverty circle. We also run a popular Christmas shoe box appeal from October; more details can be found on our website.
In what way do the families you support change? I can tell you it really is incredible to witness the transformation in children and parents if you invest, both financially and emotionally by building trusting and long lasting relationships with them. One
example is the Barba family who we started supporting last autumn. It is amazing to see how far they have come in just one year. When I last visited them Mr Barba proudly showed me the new room he built himself (with materials provided by Open Hands) for his little girl Alina, while Mrs Barba was so keen to show us every page of Alina’s school work. This family used to live in extreme isolation, on the bread line. Alina has now started school and gained much confidence this year, the family is healthier and happier; what a great success for this little girl! It is wonderful to see lives transformed and family relationships restored. As we continue this vital work and seek to help more families, like the Barba’s, please consider supporting our work. Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. Training, Trying, Triathlon-ing Annie Sidgewick of Nutley, member of the Freedom Tri Club of Crowborough, competed in the Female 60-65 category of the World Triathlon Grand Final last month. We were able to catch her just before the big day to find out why and how she had found herself entering the biggest Triathlon event in the World! “Well it all started a few years ago when I took up running. A friend was a personal trainer (Austin Warren) and he took on the task of getting me running and fit! After a couple of years of running I started to enter small 5k races, then 10k and got as far as half marathons. Then a chance meeting with a friend at Crowborough Leisure introduced me to the newly formed Triathlon Club (Freedom Tri Club). I just loved the swimming and then of course added the bike discipline! The first tri was over at East 24 • October 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
Grinstead who have a women only tri-a-tri, which does exactly what it is - try and triathlon. I loved it, was hooked, started to do all sorts of triathlons, much to the despair of Austin (my trainer) who was trying to fit in training around all the events! “A friend & fellow entrant, Dave Beale, suggested that with a bit more training I could try for the Age Group World Championship. The seed was sown. “I managed to get a place at Bristol Tri, which was one of the qualifiers for the World Champs and secured my place by coming in the top five of my age group to go forward to London. “So here we are packing cases, GB kit, and trusty bike to head off for London on Wednesday. The hardest part about undertaking this challenge for me was the
training, which really started at the beginning of the year with the aim of qualifying. The training is pretty full on as one is involved with the three disciplines. You really have to enjoy the three sports otherwise you wouldn’t be able to go out on those dark cold days when perhaps you would rather stay warm inside!! Those were the hardest days. “The highlights so far: qualifying in Bristol. Another big day in the diary. The build up was intense but when I found out that I had come 5th and qualified for the World Championships I was so thrilled!! A real highlight. “Will I be continuing? Yes most certainly. There are lots of local events which are enormous fun, but the larger events held all over the country are very satisfying when you run with elite athletes and beginners all together”.

Another Way Charles Gallannaugh, the first surgeon to perform an operation at the renowned Horder Centre in Crowborough, has turned author to publish: ‘Another Way – The Horder Centre Sixty Years of Evolution’. The book tells the story of the progression from a fledgling charity in 1954 to today’s centre of excellence - a multifaceted 21st century organisation that has been built and designed around the concepts of a therapeutic environment. It also features an impressive selection of photographs including visits from former president Princess Margaret. Part One of the book describes the time from its inception to the death of its founder Cecilia Bochenek in 1981 and part two describes the establishment of the surgical unit and the development of a modern joint replacement service. We are able to bring you a brief Question and Answer with the author, who, although retired, remains a trustee of the centre: What/Who inspired you to write this book? For many years patients and staff had asked me about the origins of the Centre; how did it come about and who was Lord Horder. Aware that the current Chief Executive wished to make use of the Centre’s history as a focus of interest for patients I decided to write the story before old records had been destroyed and the memories of those who were
Price Match Guarantee*
involved had faded. In brief, what for you personally as author is the most memorable part? The most memorable part of the Centre’s history for me was the development of surgery in the mid 1980’s. At that time the Centre’s future was bleak indeed but the introduction of surgery was a way forward. As the surgeon who carried out the first operation there in 1989 and one of those involved in the project from the beginning, I was aware that seeking public funds and support to carry out NHS surgery in a small unit on the edge of the Ashdown Forest was fraught with difficulty. The present day success of Horder Healthcare justifies the work of all those who have been involved in its development over the years. What is the key thing that you hope people will gain from reading the book? There is a predominant view in the UK that health care can only be provided by the NHS or private hospitals. I hope that those who read this history will see that there is ‘another way’ to provide high quality health care for all patients seeking treatment via NHS, self-funding or insured as this independent charitable trust continues to show. The 210-page book can be bought for £9.95 at The Horder Centre Coffee Shop or ordered online at horderhealthcare. co.uk. with all proceeds going to the charity. “I jumped at the chance to have an ad in the ‘Ashdown living’ when I heard about it. The fact that it is delivered by the Royal Mail means it gets to all those properties in and around the Ashdown Forest area that are hard to reach. British Wildlife Centre David Mills was a Farmer for 30 years before he gave it up to start the now nationally renowned British Wildlife Centre, which, luckily enough, is right on our doorstep… Here we find out more:
What was your inspiration for starting the British Wildlife Centre? For 30 years I was a dairy farmer with a herd of pedigree Jersey cows, and then in 1994 I sold the cows and converted the farm into the British Wildlife Centre. Animals have been a life-long passion and it was a dream of mine to run my own zoo. Being a farmer, working the land and being surrounded by wildlife, the natural progression was to create a Centre where people could learn about nature and be aware of the wonderful wildlife species which share our space.
What was the hardest part to establishing the centre? Obtaining planning permission for the change of use, and convincing the local authority that it was a good idea!
What is your goal with the centre? Our ethos is ‘Conservation through Education’. We feel it is vital for children to have an opportunity to see and learn about our own native wildlife, to develop a life-long interest in its protection and survival. From very small beginnings the Centre has grown into a place of national recognition, home to one of the finest collection of native species in the country. Visitors can see the smallest harvest mouse through to our largest land mammal, the red deer; plus rare species such as red squirrels, water voles and pine martens - animals that would be now almost impossible to view in nature.
Regularly used by the BBC Natural History Unit to film a particular species for programmes such as Springwatch, it’s also been used by CBeebies and many independent film makers.
What are your future plans? Conservation is very close to our hearts and our 16 acre wetlands nature reserve is currently being extended by another 10 acres to provide further habitat for a huge variety of insects, birds and mammals.
What has been the best highlight so far? One of the highlights of running the BWC is watching the public’s enthusiastic reaction over the years, that’s been a real delight. It’s been a huge pay off for that big initial risk! We strive to be innovative and are always trying new things. High spots in recent years have included the launch of our walk-through red squirrel enclosure in their own wooded Cospe. This was the very first enclosure of its kind in the UK and we were honoured to have Dame Judi Dench open this in 2010. It’s been a big success. Last year we launched our unique Nocturnal House for native night time species and we were privileged to have wildlife TV presenter, naturalist Chris Packham cut the ribbon. Chris is a good friend of the Centre and enjoys the fantastic photographic opportunities available here.

mums the Word...
Traditional Halloween Recipe: Toffee Apples Ingredients: 8 red apples (or 9 small ones) wooden skewers 450g (1 lb) sugar 150ml (1/4 pint) water 30g (1 oz) butter 1 tablespoon glucose optional: 3 drops red food colouring (as desired)
Mothers are the heart of any household. I try to spend as much time with my children as I possibly can while also fulfilling my professional duties. It is tricky, but I think I manage it. Helena Bonham Carter
What to do: 1. Wash and dry the apples and put in the skewers.
Anyone for a Spot of Leaf Spotting? Take the kids to try to find the most beautiful/unusual Autumn leaves - you can keep these for Arts and Crafts days later on in the year or even frame the best (once dried of course). You can visit: visitwoods.org.uk and see the section, ‘Autumn leaf spotting’, print off the page of possible leaf finds and tick them off as you go along. We suggest you try local Standen Wood - near Standen House. The wood is now in the care of the National Trust and is open to the public for most of the year . It has been owned and managed as a nature reserve since the 1970s and is a haven for birds and is a lovely walk suitable for children.

2. Place sugar and water into a saucepan, stir over heat until the sugar is dissolved. Then add butter and glucose, cook rapidly, without stirring until it reaches 150 degrees C or, if you don’t have a sugar thermometer, then test the mixture by dropping a teaspoon into cold water, it should form a very hard ball. If this doesn’t happen, then boil for a little longer, otherwise the toffee won’t set on the apples.

Poppies take Root A Grass roots (or Poppy roots A !) movement is growing that to mark the centenary of WW1 next year towns, villages and indeed individuals should plant field poppies in front gardens and areas of public land which will not be mown. The poppy is of course a symbol of WWI as a result of the famous poem In Flanders Fields the Poppies Grow by John McCrae. He wrote this in 1915 after burying a close friend killed in the conflict, and noticing how quickly the poppies grew over the newly-dug grave:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
34 • October 2013 • Ashdown Forest Living
It seems such a simple and appropriate tribute which can be done by anyone, anywhere. Also it is worth mentioning that poppies, being wild flowers, will encourage more wildlife such as bees. You can sow poppies this month for an early yield or otherwise wait until the Spring. Here are some simple instructions for planting by our regular garden writer Michael Dongray of Imberhorne Lane Nursery: Papaver Rhoeas Also known as Field Poppy, Flanders Poppy, Corn Poppy Seed can be sown directly where it is to grow in the Autumn or between March to May. Poppy seed needs to be sown on disturbed soil in a sunny position. The seed can be thinly broadcast over the ground and a light covering of soil over the seed will help protect from birds. Germination takes place 4 to 25 days after sowing. Poppy will grow well in impoverished poor soil so fertilising the ground prior to sowing is not required. If there is a prolonged dry spell then watering will be needed. Poppies are self seeding, the seed, which is produced from July onwards, can remain viable in the soil for many years. To make sure self sown seed comes again the ground should be disturbed in the Autumn.
