Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

AN ARCHITECT’S VIEW
DESIGNING FOR OLD AGE By Phillip Mumford, Cowan Architects
O
ld age is not an illness but comes to us all, bringing with it stiff joints and creaking bones. Equally, infirmity and old age do not necessarily go together. But maintaining an independent lifestyle in your own home, whatever your changing circumstance, needs only a little thought and smart design. Addressing the factors of an ailing body and a more sedentary lifestyle can still be handled with subtlety and need not involve a move. Careful design considerations can be used to avoid many difficulties, including bending and an increased propensity to trip over small height changes. Level access throughout the home and garden will lessen the risk of falls and automatic garage doors prevent strain. Access to kitchens and bathrooms have to be safe and uncomplicated while raised WCs and a wet room with a fold-down shower seat will avoid the difficulties of getting into and out of a bath and ultimately giving longer independence. A major issue is likely to be your need to get from one storey to another and you might need to consider a lift, such as a stair-lift though some staircases are too small or not suitable. Alternatives are a through-floor which may not be as expensive as you might think. Improving views, particularly in the living rooms and kitchen, can be achieved by lowering window sills and the maximising of natural light will give a happier environment. Arthritic hands manage levers better than knobs so a change of the ironmongery on doors and cupboards around the house will be a great help to arthritic hands. Handrails that are robust and simple (avoid the designer look) should be positioned on strong walls, while shallow steps with a handrail are easier to negotiate and more desirable than ramps
unless a wheelchair is needed. In this case, avoid the problems of getting stuck by replacing gravel driveways and paths with bonded gravel. In the kitchen avoid low and awkward cupboards while non-slip surfaces can be applied to areas where there may be spills. High level fridges minimise unnecessary bending and lifting can be reduced using ovens with sliding doors that act as a safe shelf. Instant boil taps might offer an alternative to heavy kettles while induction hobs will cut the likelihood of unnecessary burns. Internal finishes can be made for easy maintenance and regularly accessed sockets put at waist height. If there is a need for wheelchair use, space becomes a factor as in Britain most doorways, halls and passages would need widening to allow freedom of movement. Basins and work surfaces would also have to be altered to be at the right height. Smart technology is no longer the preserve of the young with lighting, heating, security, opening doors and windows and much more managed via the internet at the touch of a button. Designing for old age or sudden infirmity is not about making your home institutional but keeping it comfortable and desirable, adding value while protecting the quality of your life. Finding Fabulous Fungi being in a Classification/Kingdom unto their own. They range in form, from yeast and moulds, to the edible or inedible mushrooms that we are most familiar with. But due to this range we actually come into contact with them more often those most will realise. Secret and elusive, their existence being a mystery until they bear fruit which we know as mushrooms, toadstools or moulds. The main body of the organism consists of tiny strands known as mycelium. Although tiny and almost invisible for a majority of the time, they are probably the most important organisms on the planet. Important as they are, little is known about this Kingdom which has been estimated at 1.5 million to 5 million species.
Autumn is the time of year that probably gets most foragers most exuberated! After the heady excitement and frantic picking of the new spring herbs things seem to plateau in Summer. The days are longer and the frenetic energy of Spring is but a distant memory. Fruits are ripening and there is a bit of a waiting game on our hands. Patience being the order of the day. But Autumn is different. For it is at this time that the fungi season starts in earnest. Now don’t get me wrong, there are fungi present all year round, but Autumn is when they come into their own. Fungi are probably one of the most fascinating of the natural world. They are neither animal, vegetable or mineral,
What we do know though, is that in the wild, there are a wide variety of edible species and deadly species alike. While I always advocate that a person forages with care and never eats anything without 100% identification, this is most important when foraging for fungi. There is no room for error with fungi, for there are some species that there is no known cure for the effects of the toxins held within. Fungi provide the trees with minerals and metals and the trees, in return, provide water and sugars. The mycelium of the fungi wrap around or tap into the roots and then extend out to the next tree. This is very important as the trees use this not only for the nutrients but also as a means of communication. Just like the World Wide Web (internet) for us. Young trees growing in shade are able to gather the nutrients they require for growth through this process. The fungi also

is based on numerous factors, the shape of the fungi, the size, the smell, the taste, the habitat and spore print. Habitat is very important as most fungi have a symbiotic relationship with particular trees or plants. Spore print is the most important identification tool. Fungi spore are of a particular colour, depending on the family or individual species. Sometimes a microscope is required to look at the shape of the spore in order to identify it 100%. I often get told by people that they don’t like mushrooms. Taste and texture being the most common cited reason for the dislike. But in the wild they come in a variety textures from being like chicken breast (Chicken of the woods, Laetiporus sulphureus) to silky soft texture of the cooked Parasol Mushroom, Lepiota procera. The smells and tastes are as varied as the number of species and could be further apart from the limited selection of the supermarket. I would encourage everyone to start taking notice of the fungi growing around them at this time of year. But NEVER eat anything unless 100% sure of what it is. break down hard wood and return this nutrient rich source back into the ecosystem. When foraging for fungi we need to engage all our senses and most important we need to slow down. It is amazing how camouflaged they can be. Identification

Groombridge Place house laying derelict for almost two decades it was very likely to have been used as a smugglers hide. When the gang was finally brought to justice one of the leaders, John Bowra escaped and became a land agent and map maker. In fact he used his knowledge of Groombridge to draw up a plan of the estate which can be found preserved in Groombridge Place.
Groombridge Place near Tunbridge Wells offers a mix of history and horticulture for the adults and a grand adventure for the kids … However this popular tourist attraction has an interesting past. William Russell built a moated castle and chantry in 1239 after Groombridge was given to him by Henry III. The existence of a manor at Groombridge was first recorded in 1286 when it belonged to the de Cobhams. In 1360 it was purchased by Thomas Waller who owned it until 1604. By 1618, Groombridge belonged to John Packer, a deeply religious man who built a private Chapelof-Ease to Speldhurst before it passed to his youngest son, the barrister and architect Philip Packer. Philip Packer, assisted by his friend Christopher Wren, built the present day house. Despite marrying heiress Isabella Berkeley, daughter of Robert Berkeley and Elizabeth Conyers Phillip, was unable to pay his debts and after he died in 1652 it was vested in the Chancery and lay empty for 20 years. During this time it was
thought to have been used by the infamous Groombridge Gang whose smuggling antics saw the dragoons called out regularly to restore order at Groombridge. Legend has it that there was a tunnel between the cellars at Groombridge Place and those of the nearby Crown Inn, although a tunnel has never been found.
The property was purchased in 1754 by William Camfield, on whose death in 1781 it was sold to Robert Burges of Hall Place and his widow bequeathing it to her sister Mrs Saint. The Saint family lived at Groombridge until 1919 and included John Saint’s daughters who were friends of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Although the exterior remains largely original it benefitted from
Documents first record the Groombridge Gang in 1733, when thirty of them were in the process of ferrying tea inland from Romney Marsh via Iden. Other documents talk about three customs officers, two dragoons and a foot soldier making the mistake of challenging the gang and a convoy of 50 horses only to be disarmed and their guns made useless before being marched at gun-point for four hours to Lamberhurst, where their weapons were returned to them after they had promised not to renew the pursuit. Much of the contraband smuggled into London by the Groombridge Gang came via Lydd, Fairlight and Pevensey. The goods could have been hidden in Ashdown Forest but with the

were in the seventeenth century. The central axis pathway is called “The Apostle Walk”, because it is bordered on each side by twelve yews clipped into drum shapes, some of which have survived from the 1674 planting. Groombridge Place is home to a bird of prey sanctuary founded in 1977 and run by Eddie Hare. It provides flying demonstrations for the public twice a day (except Mondays) and over the years has rehabilitated hundreds of birds. electricity and bathrooms being installed in the 1920’s. The peaceful walled gardens, which overlook the house, are a special feature of Groombridge Place and Phillip Packer enlisted the help of diarist and horticulturist John Evelyn’s to plan the new leisure gardens. It is said Evelyn planted two Scots pines by the front moat bridge, one of which still exists. One famous garden is the drunken garden, a favourite of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s. It was at Groombridge Place that his world famous Sherlock Holmes novel “The Valley of Fear” is set, although the House is renamed “Birlstone Manor”. As well as the drunken garden there is the knot garden, white
rose garden, oriental garden, peacock garden, herbaceous borders, and a secret garden, all laid out in separate garden rooms. There are three ancient apple trees in the “White rose garden” that remain from the orchard that existed there in the seventeenth century. One still apparently produces fruit, despite its great age and the mistletoe growing on it. The Secret Garden has a gate leading to a tiny hidden corner where a tiny stream tumbles into the moat. It was here that Philip Packer was sitting reading a book in the sunshine when he died. The paths, walls, gateways and main divisions or rooms of the garden are still much as they

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you October think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. There are many ghost stories at Groombridge Place. The ghost reported most often is the Ostler. The Ostler is reported to have drowned in 1808 and is usually seen wearing a rust coloured smock and standing in the doorway of the cottage that backs onto the moat. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle describes his encounter of a ghost in his book “At the Edge of the Unknown”. If you decide to visit Groombridge Place you can choose to start your journey by taking an old diesel or steam train with Spa Valley Railway. THE MONTH OF OCTOBER: A CLOSER LOOK... 1. The Anglo-Saxons called October Winterfylleth (or Winterfilth as Tolkien’s hobbits put it) meaning the ‘fullness’ because at the full moon (fylleth) of this month, winter was supposed to begin. The Slavs called it “yellow month”, because of fading of the leaves. 2. The Hunt For Red October is the only film with October in its title to win an Oscar.

3. The month of October is not mentioned at all in any of William Shakespeare’s plays.
If the October moon comes without frost, expect no frost till the moon of November.
4. According to a recent study in Italy, October is the best month for conceiving a boy baby.
If ducks do slide at Hallowtide (around Halloween), At Christmas they will swim; If ducks so swim at Hallowtide at Christmas they will slide.
5. St Luke’s Day on the 18th of October is traditionally a day when girls could have some insight into their future marriage prospects. Before going to bed, they were told to put their faces in a mixture of spices, honey and vinegar, and once in bed they must say the following rhyme: St Luke, St Luke, be kind to me, In dreams let me my true love see Also ‘St Luke’s Little Summer’ is so named as this saint’s day is often at the centre of a spell of

Local Business Country Traditionals of Forest Row Country Traditionals was started up some twenty years ago from a barn on London Road in Forest Row. Nicola and Simon Tame bought the business in July 2012 from the previous owner who was retiring. They’d started up their own business, Artyfarty Designs - Home Accessories, over 20 years ago and became friendly with him whilst they were all exhibiting at the Country Living Magazine shows in London. The pottery to be found at Country Traditionals is hand-crafted in Boleslawiec Poland, at the world famous Ceramic Artystyczna pottery works. This handcrafted stoneware is meant for real life and every day use; therefore it is oven/aga, microwave & dishwasher safe. The colours on offer are mostly blues/creams with a touch of green which mix beautifully together to make a stunning display in any home, both traditional and modern. Patterns such as sloe-berry, love-leaf, hearts, spots, stars, etc. Items such as mugs, jugs, plates, bowls, tea pots, lasagne/baking dishes & more can be found. Country Traditionals receive a delivery from Poland every couple of months, and are always adding new items/patterns to the range, also supplying many trade customers throughout the UK. There is a very busy online side to the business, with wedding lists for lucky brides to be!
Nicola says, ‘The enjoyable part of running this business is getting in new designs and the wonderful feedback we get from all our loyal and new customers. We know that once someone has bought or been given their first piece of our wonderful pottery they will be back for more, it can almost become an addiction to keep collecting it”!. ‘There may be another shop in the pipeline, it’s just finding the right town, location/premises and of course great staff who are the key asset to any business! We are very lucky at Country Traditionals to have such a brilliant team of staff ; two of our ladies have been with the business since day one!’ To visit Country Traditionals and see what they have to offer simply look out for the blue Pottery Barn sign on the road from East Grinstead to Forest Row A22 London Road ( Friends removals yard) there is ample free parking available and you will receive a warm welcome.Open Thurs-Sat 10am -4pm

Known as Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night or Fireworks Night.. We all know the story of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 when 13 conspirators planned to blow up Parliament and kill King James I, Fawkes, of course, was arrested while guarding explosives. People in London lit bonfires that night to celebrate the failure of the plot, and an act of Parliament was passed to appoint the date as a day of thanksgiving for the “joyful deliverance of James I”. This act remained in force for 254 years, until 1859. However it is still celebrated to this day. As it is just round the corner, here are some facts about Guy Fawkes, gunpowder and fireworks: • The only place in the UK that does not celebrate Bonfire Night is St. Peter’s School in York which Guy Fawkes attended as a boy. In their words, “We don’t burn effigies of old boys” out of respect for their former pupil. • Guy Fawkes wasn’t actually the head honcho conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot, but he had one of the most important roles as it was he who guarded the gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament. • Physicists from the Institute of Physics have calculated that the 2,500kg of gunpowder Fawkes hid would have wreaked damage almost 500 metres from the centre of the explosion. • Gunpowder was invented in China while alchemists attempted to create a potion of immortality. Chinese military forces started using gunpowder-based weapons and explosives against the Mongols whom continually attempted to invade and breach city fortifications on China’s northern borders.
It is believed that this ‘recipe’ was then spread via the Middle East to Europe. Fireworks were first produced by the Italians in the city of Florence.
Discovery of the Gunpowder Plot (c. 1823), Henry Perronet Briggs
The first recorded fireworks display in England was at the wedding of King Henry VII to Elizabeth of York in 1486. Fireworks steadily gained popularity during the reign of Henry VIII. By Elizabethan times (1558-1603) there was a fireworks master created by the Queen. Later still, James II (1633 - 1701) even knighted his fireworks master having enjoyed an amazing show of fireworks at his coronation. • Dummies have been burned on bonfires since as long ago as the 13th century, initially to drive away evil spirits. • The word ‘guy’ actually comes from the name Guy Fawkes. It originally meant “an ugly, repulsive man” but, throughout the years, simply became another word for “man”. As a word it actually ‘emigrated’ to America with the English immigrants of the day. It dropped out of use in England in everyday speech, but we absorbed it back again with the coming of American movies! • Despite the high security that already exists, The Houses of Parliament are still searched by the Yeomen of the Guard before the state opening which has been held in November since 1928. The idea is to ensure no modern-day Guy Fawkes is concealed in the cellars! Ironically the man, Guy Fawkes, is now remembered far more in common consciousness than James I whose deliverance from death is the moment we’re all supposed to be celebrating! We wish you all an enjoyable and safe Bonfire Night!

Putting a price on priceless. In this issue, Annie Streeter and Jane Cowans, Agents at the Haywards Heath office of NFU Mutual, answer your questions about valuing your possessions:
lost or stolen jewellery and watches - the sentimental loss can be equal to, if not greater, than the financial loss suffered.
Which items do homeowners typically undervalue or overlook when calculating their home contents insurance? Artwork, jewellery and watches, especially those items which have been inherited which may have appreciated in value without anyone realising. We recommend that valuations are revisited every three years as things like gold and art can appreciate steeply over this time. NFU Mutual offers access to valuation experts with wide ranging experience. If something is of sentimental value, surely it doesn’t matter what it’s worth? Enjoying an object or piece of art for the memories it holds and its significance to your family is part of the beauty of heirlooms; however, if the item is lost, damaged or stolen, it affects a family’s ability to pass it down. By correctly insuring items, future generations will not miss out on their sentimental importance or financial benefits. How common are insurance claims for jewellery & watches? In 2013, NFU Mutual paid out £3.4 million for
What should I look for when choosing an insurer for my home & contents? It’s important to look at the ‘whole package’ – service, cover and price. It can be tempting to simply select on the basis of cost; however, you should satisfy yourself that the level of cover and service provided will meet your needs. The true test of an insurance company is will come when you have to make a claim. It’s well worth talking to other people about their experiences and asking for testimonials. How important are local branches? Our customers tell us they find it a pleasure and reassuring to discuss their requirements face-to-face in a relaxed atmosphere where we have a detailed knowledge of the area and the many local issues which might affect a customer’s insurance needs.

Cuticles can have a mind of their own when humidity strikes. Tame urgent locks with a spritz of anti humidity spray and always try to work with the natural texture and flow of your hair as much as possible. When temperatures rise, dry shampoo might be your only saviour. If your hair gets a little sweaty from the heat, simply spray a dry shampoo into the roots and shake out - this will leave your hair feeling, and smelling fresh and revitalised. If you have a fringe that gets oily in the heat, then spray dry shampoo directly on to a brush and work through the front of the hair thoroughly.

HELPFUL HALLOWEEN RECIPES
GReen SpooKy WiTcH FinGeRS These biscuits are a perfect Halloween treat
WHaT To Do:
1 egg
1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla extract & food colouring in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder (or bicarbonate of soda) and salt, continually beating;
1 teaspoon almond extract
2. Chill in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes.
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3. Preheat oven to 160 C / Gas mark 3. Lightly grease baking tray.
350g (12 oz) plain flour
4. Remove dough from fridge. Take one heaped teaspoon at a time and place onto a flour-covered surface or greaseproof paper. Roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped biscuit. Press an almond into one end of each biscuit to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze biscuit near the tip and again near the centre of each to give the impression of knuckles, then use a knife to mark it, if you wish, to give it a more haggered appearance. Continue making fingers as above until all the dough is used up. Place the finger-shaped biscuits on the baking tray.
225g (8 oz) butter 125g (4 1/2 oz) icing sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder (or Bicarbonate of soda) 1 teaspoon salt 100g (4 oz) whole almonds 1 tube red decorating icing (optional: make your own red icing with icing sugar & food colouring) 1 teaspoon green food colouring (or another colour of your choice)
5. Bake in the preheated oven until the biscuits are slightly golden in colour, 20 to 25 minutes. 6. Remove the almond from the end of each biscuit & squeeze a small amount of red icing into the cavity. Replace the almond and press down to cause the icing to ooze out around the tip of the biscuit. 7. See the horrified looks as you serve up the fingers as a Halloween treat!

This was proved to me when I won a job in Crowborough, at a house with 1km drivew ay! I’ve had great results advertising in this publication and will continue to do so for as long as it is around.” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Bui lding

Gardening in October By Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery
Autumn planting
Shrubs and Hedges
To do or not to do? – that is the question. I’m a fan of sorting the garden out in the autumn, not least because in the Spring you wake up one morning and start to see the reward for all your efforts.
If you’re planning a new hedge then you can buy
Perennials
perfect conditions for them. They will establish well
If you have tender perennials in the borders, now is the time to lift them, pelargoniums, half hardy fuchsias, dahlias, move them indoors or into a greenhouse. With the dahlia tubers, clean and dry them off and wrap them in newspaper and leave in a cool dry place over winter. Plants with good seedheads leave for the birds to feed on. Some grasses and perennials can give good winter interest when they glisten in the frosts so leave some plants for winter border interest.
Bulbs Now is the time to finish off your bulb planting ready for the Spring. Your daffodils are probably already planted but now is perfect timing for the tulips and hyacinths.
it now bareroot. It’s a good time to plant trees and shrubs as the ground is warm but moist creating ready for next Summer.
Lawns As last month, maintenance and repair. Fill any bare patches, scarify and hollow tine and then apply a good autumn feed.
Fruit and vegetables Sprouts and leeks will be ready this month as well as the autumn cauliflowers. Onions, shallots and garlic can be kept in a dry, cool and bright place. When the soil is cleared of all your crops dig it over and work in
Containers and Pots
garden compost .
You may have done these last month but if not get out and do them now. Put you bulbs in and then make the pots look pretty for the winter with a range of autumn and winter bedding. It cheers you up on those dull winter days.
Enjoy the garden, get out early as the nights are drawing in quite fast and you need to make the most of the late autumn sunshine. Take time to enjoy the blaze of colour that Autumn throws at us…

What we Brits have to deal with... 1. Being unable to pour milk without sniffing it first. 2. Being unable to go anywhere without being told to Keep calm and do something. 3. Making eye contact with a stranger on the tube, looking away out of the window, and then immediately making eye contact with the stranger’s reflection. 4. Being unable to pay for something with the exact change without saying “I think that’s right”. 5. Running out of ways to say thanks when a succession of doors are held for you already having already deployed ‘cheers’, ‘ta’ and ‘nice one’. 6. Waiting for permission to leave after paying for something with the exact change. 7. Prince George is a year old and has already visited half the countries you’ve always wanted to. 8. Wishing to feed the family at Heathrow but not wanting to go into debt. 9. Tutting at someone who pushes into the queue, and then they turn and glare at you. 10. Getting 5 minutes into one of Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals then realising you’ve forgotten to grow a herb garden in your kitchen.
Forest Row Forever! Row, so much going on, so many gorgeous people. So before long, a song (THE FOREST ROW SONG) was written, a brilliant tune was put to it by a local musician, and then three giggling grown up men hit the streets of the village on a sunny Saturday and filmed it being sung in lots of different locations. The locals really got into it when we spontaneously burst into their shops or farms or playground; we all had a lot of fun making it.
We first thought it would be a nice idea to remind people that Forest Row festival was happening by making a song, rather than bombarding with posters and social media. But very quickly we found that what we really wanted to do was sing about what a fantastic place Forest Row is - because it is! There is a startling amount of material offered by Forest
And then we edited it, and hey presto we had a video. On to YouTube it goes and the strange world we live in did the rest - within a couple of days, it seemed most people in the village had already seen it and we ended up performing it live at the Festival! My favourite response to the song, and the most popular reaction: “I love this village!!”. Catch it on YouTube! Chris Packe
