“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Dear Residents,
Whats inside this month
Welcome to the October issue! This month we bring you a very interesting feature about Lake Wood, near Uckfield, a local beauty spot that has an interesting history. With Halloween around the corner, see our Halloweeny Musings for some spooky inspiration. Roasted Hake, Warm Pea, Herb, Baby Turnip and Tenderstem Salad Serves 2 people
By Andrew Wilson, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club
Ingredients • 2 x 180g hake portions • 125g tenderstem broccoli • 20g fresh mint • 20g fresh chervil • 100g peas • 6 baby turnips • 50g butter • Olive oil • Salt and pepper to season
Method: 1. Blanch the peas in boiling salted water for 1 minute, followed by the broccoli for another 1 minute, then refresh under cold water, drain and set aside. Peel the baby turnips and again blanch in the water for 3-4 minutes. 2. Slice each hake portion twice on the skin side, to a depth of about 4mm, then rub with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 3. Take a non-stick pan, add a touch of olive oil and heat to medium, then place the hake skin side down in the pan. Turn the heat down to low and leave to cook slowly for 5-6 minutes so the skin becomes crispy. Turn the fish over, add a touch of butter and baste the fish with it, then turn off the heat and leave to cool down in the pan – the fish will carry on
cooking and won’t dry out. 4. To plate, warm up the broccoli, peas and baby turnips in a small amount of butter, then add the chopped mint and chervil. 5. Check the seasoning and spoon the garnish onto the middle of the plate, then place the roasted hake on top.

CROWBOROUGH’S FILM SOCIETY:
Pine Grove Pictures Grove Pictures is not in any sense an exclusive film club. Everyone is very welcome, some decide to become members since it reduces the ticket price and they receive newsletters informing them of latest developments and future films. Any excess of income over expenditure goes to improve facilities so that high quality HD pictures can be shown on the large screen. The Regent Cinema in Crowborough may have closed in 1968 and been converted into shops but popular film entertainment has been provided in the town for the past four years by Pine Grove Pictures.
The aim of this group is to provide affordable cinema on the doorstep of all residents of Crowborough and the surrounding villages. The film shows are also seen by many as an opportunity for a social event, to meet friends
and neighbours at a venue close to home and perhaps enjoy a drink from the bar which opens prior to the performance. The organisers found that even with a film each month they struggled to cover all genres and meet all tastes. This led to the extension of “Pine Grove Extra” where five additional films are shown throughout the year, on a Tuesday evening, giving filmgoers a chance to see World Cinema, classics and Art House films. To find out more about Pine Grove Pictures go to their website www. pinegrovepictures.org.uk.
Since showing their first film, Midnight in Paris, at the newly built Community Centre in 2014 they have provided film entertainment on one Friday of every month. This not-forprofit community cinema is run by a small group that forms the committee and is aided by volunteers taking important roles such as projectionists, ticket sellers, bar staff, website designers, etc. Films are chosen to appeal to a wide audience and Pine

outcrops along the sides of the valley that runs east/ west across the site. Various features were carved out of these outcrops including tunnels and steps; and a boathouse and a sandstone wall were built on the boundary along Rocks Road. Rides suitable for use by horse and carriage were also put through the wood, entering via a tunnel under the road. Another tunnel cut through the rock completes natural and man-made features. Rocky sandstone outcrops with high cliffs overhang the three-acre spring-fed lake, with a cavelike boathouse carved out of the rock.
History Lake Wood became part of the Rocks Estate, owned by the Streatfeild family, in 1789 and stayed with the family until it was acquired by the Woodland Trust in 1993. In the early nineteenth century, the southern part of the site was landscaped in the style of Capability Brown. An existing pond was enlarged by the building of an earth dam which created a threeacre spring-fed lake. The site already benefited from the dramatic sandstone

Lily pads on the lake and a distant cave in the rocks
the path around the lake. The landscaping along with the planting of exotic trees and shrubs was designed to create an extension of 'the Gardens and Pleasure Grounds of Rocks House' and provide 'picturesque and romantic walks', a fashion of the time pioneered by Capability Brown. Some of these exotic species still survive to this day, including some large specimen trees.
Hazel coppicing
The storm of 1987 seriously damaged the site, blowing down many of the large specimen trees and approximately 100 oak standards, allowing the spread of the invasive rhododendron ponticum. Since acquiring the site, the Woodland Trust has cleared much of the rhododendron, with a lot of the work carried out by volunteer work parties. The clearance has revealed most of the Cretaceous Ardingly sandstone outcrops within the wood which are of geological interest, as well as the lower plants (mosses, lichens, ferns) that grow on them.
Ground flora includes woodland specialist species such as wood anemone, bluebell, wood sorrel, tutsan, primrose, wood spurge, Solomon's seal, wild garlic, early purple orchid and moschatel. And the impressive royal fern can be seen around the lake, rare elsewhere in Sussex.
A small amount of hazel coppicing still takes place in Lake Wood with the poles used for bean poles, pea sticks and other structures for climbing plants. In former times, hazel would be cut to ground level and the poles used to make hurdles for herding sheep and also for wattle and daub used in building houses.
Important species found in the wood include: dormouse, yellow-necked mouse, great crested newt, five species of bat and deer. There are almost 60 species of bird – including kingfisher, heron, cormorant, nuthatch, Continues over the page.

sandpiper and the occasional visit from a Canada goose. The lake also supports an interesting fish population including eel, pike and perch. One of the reasons there aren’t many wild game birds on the lake is because they seem to sense there are very large pike under the water!
Setting Lake Wood is just under one kilometre (½ mile) from Uckfield town centre, via Church Street and Rocks Road. Rocks Road is narrow with bends and has no pavements. Despite its proximity to the town, the location is peaceful and feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of urban living. There is no car park at the wood, but cars may be parked in the two lay-bys on Rocks Road, opposite the wood and in the eastern gateway.
Accessibility and walks There are two entrances off Rocks Road – a stile at the eastern end and a kissing gate at the western end – plus further public access land to the south of the site in West Park. Various paths within the site take in the woodland and the lake. There are various sets of steps (stone and wooden) and a tunnel through the rocks. None of the paths are surfaced and can become very muddy in places after wet weather. There are some gentle to moderate gradients.
If you are interested in volunteering to help look after this local beauty spot, you can call the Woodland Trust on: 01476 581111, or email: volunteering@woodlandtrust.org.uk.

CROWBOROUGH COMMUNITY FESTIVAL CONTINUED
Tues 23, Wed 24, Thur 25 October The Great War On Film It was on 28 July 1914 – a month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked a diplomatic crisis across Europe – that the opening shots of ‘the war to end all wars’ were fired, as Austria-Hungary prepared to invade Serbia. On the eve of Britain’s declaration of war on Germany on 4th August, with German forces occupying neutral Belgium, British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey is said to have remarked: “The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” Four years later, the First World War had claimed almost 17 million lives. For more information and details about all films being shown, see website. Box office 01892 611414.
Wednesday 24 October Family Fun Day: vintage fete with games, stalls and refreshments. Time: 10am – 5pm, Free Entry The fete will feature Geoff Hutchinson as Rudyard Kipling in a dramatic interpretation of his life and verse. A one-man-show which combines moving drama and history. Through a variety of readings, we are transported back in time as the son of Empire’s life story unfolds. Kipling lived in Burwash and was a friend of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who lived at Windlesham Manor in Crowborough. Both literary giants of their day and both lost sons as a consequence of the greatest conflict of modern times. 10:30 – 11:30 & 12:30-1:30: Children’s Creative Workshops. 12:30 – 4:30 The ultimate Selfie: Touch the Magic Mirror for your own special memory. 1914/1918 1st World War Anniversary for a very enjoyable occasion. On Saturday 10th November, 'Poppy Day', the R.B.L. have their annual coffee morning in the Peter Griffiths Hall from 10-12noon. This will include a cake and produce stall, do pop in for a chat and support the appeal in the process.
As we commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of the 1st World War our period of Remembrance is more poignant than ever. Fittingly, this year Remembrance Sunday falls on Armistice Day itself, the 11th November. Do pop into Holy Trinity Church, Forest Row and St Dunstan’s Church in Ashurst Wood where you will see displays and information about all those who lost their lives during the 1st World War and whose names are engraved on both our War Memorials. Our grateful thanks must go to our President Dr. Hamish Aitken and member Jack Furtado, who represented the Forest Row R.B.L. branch at the Great
Pilgrimage 90 in Ypres during August – see photo. This year in Forest Row, as last year we have decided not to do a house to house collection. Instead, poppies, crosses etc. will be available in all the shops and other outlets and there will be three street collections on Saturdays 27th October, 3rd and 10th November ( If you are able to help with this, I am sure Carolyn Aitken on 01342 823611 or Susie Kemp on 01342 822784 will be pleased to hear from you). As part of the Poppy Appeal there will be a recital in Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 3rd November at 2pm. I know those who have attended in the past, will know you are in
32
Our Remembrance Sunday Service at Holy Trinity Church begins with the wreath laying at the War Memorial starting at 10:30am, followed by the service. In the evening 1000 beacons are being lit across the UK at 7pm, with bell ringing at 7:05pm, the bells will ring out throughout the country to remember when 100 years ago bells rang out throughout the land, after being silenced throughout the Great War. Holy Trinity clarion will be played to commemorate ‘Battle’s Over, – A Nation’s Tribute’. The R.B.L. is always looking for new members. You don't have to be ex-service, just be prepared to support our servicemen and their families and all the Royal British Legion does to help them, in so many different ways. If you are interested, please contact Jane Wogan on 01342 825382. Simon Morris – Chairman Forest Row R.B.L. Enquiries: 01342 300152

HALLOWEENY MUSINGS Jack-o-Lantern There is an old Irish tale associated with the jack-o’-lantern which in folklore represents a soul who has been denied entry into both heaven and hell, so must wonder the earth: On his route home after a night’s heavy bingedrinking, Jack encounters the Devil and tricks him into climbing a tree. A quick-thinking Jack etches the sign of the cross into the bark, thus trapping the Devil. Jack strikes a bargain with Satan that he can never henceforth lay claim to his soul. After a life of sin, drink, and dishonesty, Jack is naturally refused entry to heaven when he dies. Keeping his promise, the Devil refuses to let Jack into hell and, to boot, throws a live coal straight from the fires of hell at him. Being a cold night, Jack places the coal in a hollowed out turnip to stop it from going out, since which time Jack and his lantern have been roaming across town and country, looking for a place to rest.
The 1978 Film: Halloween This famous (or infamous) seventies movie made its mark, but was created on a shoestring budget. The prop department had to use the cheapest mask that they could find in the costume store which turned out to be a Star Trek (1966) William Shatner mask. They later spray-painted the face white, teased out the hair, and reshaped the eye holes. Shatner admitted that he had no idea his likeness was used for this film until, years later, during an interview someone mentioned it was a mask of him. He has since stated that he is honoured by the gesture. Continues over the page.

HALLOWEENY MUSINGS CONTINUED
The Owl
When in Mexico Mexicans do not celebrate Halloween as such, but they have a national ‘Day of the Dead’ that starts on the 31st October and runs to the 2nd of November. Family and friends gather to pray for and remember those who’ve died, and help support their spiritual journey. These celebrations developed from ancient traditions among the indigenous, pre-Columbian cultures. Such rituals glorifying ancestors, have been observed for 2500 – 3000 years. The festival fell in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, about the beginning of August, and was celebrated for an entire month. The festivities were dedicated to the goddess known as the “Lady of the Dead”. Such practices originated in the south of Mexico. At some point the festival was Christianised and made its move down the calendar to be celebrated across All Hallows eve/All Saints Day/All Souls Day in October/November. In the north these days were observed only in the traditional Christian manner, the Day of the Dead was not recognised and it was only in the latter part of the 20th century that it was embraced, finally becoming a coutry-wide public holiday in the 21st century.
The image of the owl is indelibly associated with Halloween, rather unfairly to this beautiful species. In folklore of various countries, owls have been admired, despised and revered in equal measure. No doubt the bird’s unusual features have caught human imagination in both positive and negative ways over the centuries. Apparently, a Roman superstition was that witches transformed into owls, and sucked the blood of babies?! Centuries ago the English seem to have adopted a less-than-positive view of the bird (through osmosis perhaps); an owl was considered an ominous being, as it hunts during night. It was thought to be the envoy of witches and if you hear a hoot meant a witch was approaching. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the poets Robert Blair and William Wordsworth used the Barn Owl as their favourite “bird of doom”… the screech of an owl flying past the window of a sick person meant imminent death… Thank goodness we live in less suspicious times and can appreciate owls for the beautiful creatures they are!

HALLOWEENY MUSINGS CONTINUED
Mirror on the Wall A few olde Halloween traditions that seem to be on the divination side of the spiritual (rather than the scary-ghost side) involved traditions of the British Isles whereby foretelling of one's future spouse was attempted. For instance, an apple would be peeled in one long strip, then the peel tossed over the shoulder. The peel was believed to land in the shape of the first letter of the future spouse's name. Another method of divination: a salty oatmeal bannock (bread) was given to the person to eat in three bites who then went to bed in silence without a drink. This is said to result in a dream in which their future spouse offers them a drink to quench their thirst. Unmarried women were told that if they sat in a darkened room and gazed into a mirror on Halloween night, the face of their future husband would appear as a reflection in the mirror. However, if they were destined to die before marriage, a skull would appear. How people choose a husband before the days of the internet... the mind boggles... (jokes).

Deodarize the Dishwasher Place a cup of lemon juice on the top rack, and run the load as normal for extra clean, shiny plates; but more importantly to freshen up the whole dishwasher and expel stale smells.
Need an instant, natural air freshener? For pleasant aromas throughout the house, fill a saucepan with water, lemon rinds, lemon juice and add any other herbs and spices you like, e.g. thyme. Bring to the boil, then let simmer on the hob for an hour.
Need to whiten your whites? Get your white laundry even whiter by popping a spoonful of bicarb of soda in with your detergent.
Freshen up toothbrushes: Clean and soak toothbrushes in a mixture of 50g (2oz) bicarb of soda and 50ml (1/4 pint) water; let brushes stand overnight for a thorough cleaning.
Make a window cleaner that's safe enough for younger children to use (if you can get them cleaning!) Mix 1 cup of water and 1 cup of white vinegar together, then add 1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Simply spray on the window/glass and wipe clean with a dry paper towel, a microfibre cloth or even old newspaper.

A Day in the Life of a War Child
Crowborough resident Tony Coppard (born 26.11.37) who lived in Forest Row as a child, saw our olde photo of Forest Row in the last issue which prompted him to send in this harrowing but nonetheless fascinating account of an experience which happened during the Second World War: ‘This picture shows where I
