The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

GUINEA PIG CLUB CONTINUED

what do you think he accomplished that others couldn’t?

Bill Foxley (standing) in the second stage of his pedicle graft. This would become his new upper lip. With him is the Canadian patient Stu Duncan and Canadian nursing sister Mons Stapleford William

What inspired you to take a particular interest in McIndoe and his Guinea Pigs? My grandmother was a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) nurse at the hospital and she worked with the Guinea Pig Club (GPC) all the way through the Second World War. She lived very close by and my mum remembers meeting the Guinea Pigs when they came around for tea. So I grew up knowing the story of McIndoe and the GPC - every schoolchild in Sussex knows the GPC story. My mum learned to ride her bike on College Lane up to East Court, and she remembers my grandmother telling her to run inside if she heard the bombers overhead. When I was deciding what

kind of historical research to do, I was surprised to find that no-one had looked at the official national archives for the QVH during World War II and that there was a lot of important material there to be discovered - particularly in understanding how close was the relationship between McIndoe and the most senior levels of the RAF. Whenever he wrote to them, they replied immediately - and the post was much better then so the letters got there on the same day - almost as quick as email! I wanted to find out the history behind the legend, so that inspired me to do the work that became The Guinea Pig Club book.

What sets McIndoe apart from other war time doctors and

10

McIndoe had an incredible sense of what it takes to really heal a human being - not just surgery but rehabilitation and the restoration of psychological resilience. It isn’t just doctors in war time that need to understand this, it’s all doctors, so he is a really excellent role model. We don’t really know why he thought as he did. He didn’t leave behind many personal papers and he didn’t keep a diary in the war because he was too busy working. Also, and I think people often forget this, he was a truly brilliant surgeon. Many of the medics who worked with him, say they never saw anyone with better technical skills than him. So it’s the perfect combination of technical brilliance and an understanding that recovery comes from the whole process of treatment. He did say this really important thing about what surgeons should think about their patients: “Real and lasting satisfaction is derived from what the patient does with what the surgeon achieves, rather than from the purely technical aspect of the repair.” Continues over the page. GUINEA PIG CLUB CONTINUED

What part would you say East Grinstead has played in this episode of World War history?

them throughout their lives. That’s how it’s done, no quick fix but a commitment to recovery where everyone understands and benefits from the support.

EG played a vital role. Every day the people of the town showed the Guinea Pig Club that they could go back to their lives and families and that it was possible to recover. Recovery is about really practical things like being able to go to the pub and have conversations and dance to a band. Without EG taking care of the personal, social things, McIndoe would never have been able to take care of the surgical things. I think we also forget how the town did this even though the war was raging right over their heads. It was a frightening time to live near London because of the bombing. We now know that the war ended in 1945 but no-one had a sense of how long it was going to go on for until the end of 1944 and it wasn’t certain that D-Day would result in victory. EG shows us the best of ourselves how a community can come together, for no reward except the knowledge that they have done the right thing, for years, not just for a long weekend, and really make a difference to other people’s lives.

What response have you had from the book so far and how does it tie in to the soon-to-be-released film the Guinea Pigs? The response to the book has been great, both when it was first published and now. Through events like the Invictus Games and the Paralympics, the public has a good understanding of what being a casualty means and everyone is very interested to know that there is a history of public engagement with wounded service personnel. Also, I think people understand that in the First World War, things were not properly done and casualties ended up disabled and destitute. It helps to know that things were better in the Second World War. Let’s hope that in our century things are even better! The book, ‘Guinea Pig Club, Archibald McIndoe and the RAF in World War II’ is published by Pen & Sword Books and can be found in good local book shops and Amazon.

What is the highlight of McIndoe’s story? What always stands out to readers? Readers are always fascinated by the role of the town in the recovery of the GPs. I think everyone always wants to be able to contribute to the recovery of military casualties and EG shows how this could be done in an incredibly important way. But now people also understand that this is a story about how best to treat our wounded service men and women - that when we think about how we should do that; history and the GPC has already shown us. That it isn’t necessarily very expensive or complicated, but it does require a commitment by doctors and the public to maintain support in recovery. East Grinstead didn’t just support the GPC during the war, it went on supporting

Crème patissiere

• 3 egg yolks

To assemble:

Newly Opened CROWBOROUGH’S

WALSHES PARK Recently opened Walshes Park sits in the High Weald AONB which, as many of us know, is defined by its simple beauty and rural character – unique to our neck of the woods. One of the defining landscape characters are its routeway systems of public right of ways at ridge tops (the Weald Forest Ridge of which Crowborough sits atop) with dense droveway systems radiating away, forming wider pathway networks. Many of these have been in existence for hundreds of years and the landscape has formed around this evidence of human endeavour.

Designed to navigate around various landmark features of the park, the routes provide protection for the Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) features, designed to enhance the landscape and visual character. You’ll find a river and bank system, the wildlife wetland scrape, and multiple seasonal grass cuts plus informal play spaces.

Walshes Park, has been sympathetically designed and developed as a SANGS (Suitable Alternative Natural Green Space) with an enhanced footpath network retaining the original charm and character, while increasing accessibility. The provision of multiple walking routes with a flexibility for route variations and a combination of hard surface 'all weather' paths and seasonal grass pathways allows continued access for people of varied needs.

Another new feature is a throwback to former times with the re-introduction of a historic tree avenue, set either side of the ridge top route. A prominent feature of the landscape, historic mapping of the area shows that prior to 1879, the avenue was lined by trees framing its route. The new design resulted in the tree’s

re-introduction, creating a comparatively formal landmark feature within the landscape. Orientated to visually channel movement along its route, the trees frame restrictive views until its end, where the eye is visually released to the wider open grassland with far reaching views to the south and northwest. At the beginning of September there was an official opening with a family fun day to mark the occasion.

Walshes Park is located near Stone Cross on the southern side of Crowborough. There is currently limited car parking in Alderbrook Way. Brighton and Hove Buses Regency 29 Route provides public transport to Whitehill Road, which is a 20-minute walk from the park.

Cleaning the dreaded toilets. For a heavy duty scrub that also deodorizes while it cleans, pour ½ cup of bicarb of soda into toilet bowl and about 8 or 10 drops of tea tree essential oil. Then add ¼ cup of vinegar to the bowl and scrub away while the mixture fizzes.

“It’s a great location with some splendid open scenery and wildlife,” said Councillor Ann Newton, Wealden Cabinet member for Planning and Development. “We hope local residents will enjoy this natural recreational area for generations to come. It’s the ideal place to picnic, play and relax.”

Walshes Park provides an alternative recreational venue to nearby Ashdown Forest, helping to protect the flora and fauna of this important heathland. It’s an excellent place for ramblers and dog walkers alike.

Mold and mildew a problem? Lemon, with its anti-viral qualities to the rescue…remove with washing up liquid and warm water first. Then take a sponge and dip in neat lemon juice and douse over the area, leave on.

Cleaning shower tiles and/or have a glass shower door? Consider using a squeegee to wipe down the walls, one with good suction, it will cut down on lots scrubbing and cleaning time. Spray the tiles and glass with neat white vinegar or another spray of your choice and squeegee it down. Of course the tiles will need a good overhaul scrubbing every now and again but regular spraying and squeegeeing will cut down the amount of times it’s necessary and save you lots of scrubbing time in the long run. Try this naturally scented, all-purpose cleaner: mix one part white vinegar, with one part water, add lemon rind and a few pieces rosemary sprigs. Once combined leave it to infuse for a week before using – to get a really nice scent. You can spray this anywhere and it’s safe. Spray it over laundry to freshen, use it on carpet spots. The fruit acid adds extra cleaning properties.

THINK SUMMER IS OVER? FEAR NOT! “By all these lovely tokens September days are here With summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.” -unknown It’s sometime hard to remember that September has double the amount of summer days to June! So, although the kids are back to school, no need to feel the summer is over. In fact, temperatures average only a couple of degrees lower than August, so don’t put your shorts away just yet!

Why exactly we don’t know, something to do with the dark, cold days of January perhaps? September is also the beginning of harvest time… and this year’s Harvest Moon will fall on the 25th; it’s the full moon nearest the start of autumn or the autumnal equinox. Why is it called a Harvest moon? At this time of year, the moon rises very shortly after sunset without much of a delay, for several evenings. This results in an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening. As if by a kind of miraculous co-incidence this is traditionally exactly what the farmers needed to harvest their crops – lots of light! Work had to be carried out at speed as no one wanted overripe, rotting produce, not least the farmers, so the extra light was a blessing indeed.

With a small amount of internet research I stumbled upon an interesting fact… which I hope is true as I’m sharing it with you… there are more people Forget-me-not, born in September than any other month. With September birth flower the short shrift research I can give to this fact, short of counting up all the birthdates across the world, it is true that the majority of my best friends over the years (the ones whose birthdays you always remember) were born in September…. so if that’s anything to go by, it may well be correct!

In Britain we have given thanks for successful harvests since pagan times with a Harvest Festival which is traditionally held on the Sunday near or on the Harvest Moon and we celebrate by singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food, which often now involves donating said wares to local charities in need afterwards. In Mythical-lore, the September autumn equinox is the day of the year when the god of Continues over the page.

THINK SUMMER IS OVER? FEAR NOT! CONTINUED

and February were not yet ‘worthy’ of being named. And in 1752, September had only 19 days here in Britain; the 3rd-13th were omitted when we made the change from Julian to Gregorian calendar, because, in brief, things had become slightly ‘unaligned’ when leap years weren’t being calculated accurately. Before the Normans thrusted a latinised language upon the Anglo-Saxons, September was called Gerst Monath (Barley Month) or Haefest Monath (Harvest Month) celebrating the barley harvest. Finally, September is the only month with the same number of letters in its name as the number of the month i.e. it is the ninth month of the year and has nine letters. Well I never! This year we’ve been promised an Indian summer, so with that being the case (and even if it’s not) we’re wishing you a very enjoyable month.

SUDOKU September, from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

light is defeated by his twin and alter-ego, the god of darkness. It is the time of the year when night conquers day; it was apparently the only day of the whole year when Llew (light) was vulnerable and so it was possible to defeat him as the god of light stood ‘in the balance’ with one foot on the cauldron (Cancer, the summer solstice) and his other foot on the goat (Capricorn/winter solstice). It all sounds fascinating but one thing we can say is that the nights will definitely start to draw in, but again luckily for us it’s not too noticeable til the end of the month. September (from the Latin septem, seven) was of course the seventh month of the old Roman calendar, in the days when January

Fairwarp Remembers The village of Fairwarp in Ashdown Forest is gearing up for a host of events to commemorate the centenary of the Great War. Villagers have been researching and delving into the past to find out more about the 25 villagers who gave their lives in WWI and who are listed on the village war memorial in the church yard at Christ Church. Nearly all the names have now been researched and most traced to specific homes in the village. The committee organising the events is creating a trail which will wend its way from the church yard, around the village identifying the homes of the soldiers - some of which, in the modern day, would be unrecognisable to the soldiers, but others are not so very different. To complement the trail, a permanent installation on our village green is planned: Tommy will be a 6’ aluminium outline image of a WW1 soldier and provide a reminder and reinforcement of our centenary commemoration for future generations. There will also be an exhibition showcasing all the information gathered from the research and whilst it will be based around the 25 named on the War Memorial, the researchers have uncovered much about Fairwarp and this area of the forest which will also be included in the display. The exhibition will take place at the beginning of November. On the weekend of the 10th and 11th of November the events ramp up when Christ Church will be decorated entirely in poppies

and greenery, courtesy of the Fairwarp Flower Guild, for the weekend of the WWI commemorations. The church will be open to the public on Saturday 10am to 3pm and on Sunday 11:30am – 4pm. Refreshments will be available to buy. In the afternoon of the 10th, Fairwarp WI is holding an afternoon tea. Tickets are £2 and must be bought in advance for catering purposes. All money will be donated to the Royal British Legion. Please contact Tracy at fairwarpvillage@gmail.com or on 01825 713101 for tickets. Continues over the page.

FAIRWARP REMEMBERS CONTINUED

On Sunday 11th, there will be a dedication of the new steps and handrails to the village War Memorial at 10:45am, followed by the reading of the Roll of the Fallen of Fairwarp, the Last Post and reveille, the silence and then the service of thanksgiving at 11:05am. The new war memorial steps will remain as a permanent, centenary marker of the village’s gratitude for the end of the war in 1918 and for the sacrifices made. Later there’s a homegrown free event with words and music reflecting the centenary of the events of 1914-1918 which will take place in Christ Church. Fairwarp’s commemorative events will conclude at 7:05pm with Fairwarp’s Bellringers participating in a national chime to celebrate the end of the First World War, “Battle’s Over - A Nation’s Tribute: Ringing out for Peace”. The stirring sound of our church bells will provide a fitting conclusion to our weekend of commemoration.

More details about all the events on the village website: Fairwarp.org.uk.

THE ABBEY LOCAL HISTORY NOTES

by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

Just north of the A22 between Ashurst Wood and Forest Row, is an imposing building which cuts a white, stark but beautiful figure on the surrounding landscape: The Abbey. It was built on rising ground and its gleaming white facade can be seen for miles around. It is particularly obvious from vantage points on Ashdown Forest and so itself has amazing views of the forest. It began life in 1783, when it was named Pawleys, owned by Lord George Henry Cavendish, who was a distinguished Member

George Henry Cavendish

of Parliament and Lord of the Manor. He was elevated to become the 1st Earl of Burlington and was responsible for building the Burlington Arcade in London. The property then passed into the ownership of a wealthy diamond merchant, Sir Abe Bailey. He was also a cricket batsman and footballer playing at national level for his native South Africa. Sadly, in 1938 he was diagnosed with thrombosis and had to have both legs amputated, he died two years later. One of Abe’s sons, John Milner Bailey, was born in East Grinstead by his first wife Caroline Paddon. John went on to marry Diana Churchill, Winston Churchill’s eldest daughter; the wedding also took place in East Grinstead. The marriage lasted for only three years and there were no children from their union.

36

Diana Churchill The building was shortly after converted to an all boy’s school, known as St Andrew’s. One of the members of staff there was Roderick West, who taught Latin. On his return to his Continues over the page. Enquiries: 01342 300152 Please mention us when responding to adverts

THE ABBEY CONTINUED

The well-known author, Michael Morpurgo, was a pupil there for six years. Playing rugby was one of the few things he enjoyed in those few years. The football and Rugby pitches of the school were later gifted to the village of Ashurst Wood, by Molly Pears, as a recreation ground. Known as the John Pears Pavilion, the building on it was named in memory of the man who purchased the land upon which it stands. Unfortunately, the pavilion was burnt down in 2003 but rebuilt two years later; both land and pavilion are now a central part of Ashurst Wood village used for many functions and sporting events.

native Australia, he went on to become the head of Timbertops, an outpost of Geelong Grammar School, which Prince Charles, attended for a year. The War memorial from that school is now in the custody of the Imperial War Museum.

The building itself is now divided into several luxury apartments. The Abbey has stood for nearly two hundred and fifty years now. A landmark in the local area which has seen many changes in its long life. Maybe in another two hundred and fifty years it will still be observing changes in its surroundings and making its unique contribution to our history.

The building was later sold on, but remained a school and was renamed: The Abbey School. This school had started life in Beckenham, Kent, but moved out in part of the Second World War, to avoid the bombing of the London area. The school was described as being built on 3 floors: on the ground floor was a vestibule, entrance hall/lounge, a large dining hall, a library, a vast drawing room with French windows facing south out on to the valley and the owner’s private suite of rooms. Some parts were extensively panelled in wood and other rooms had elegant plasterwork and ornate fireplaces. Wide staircases led upstairs to twenty-four bedrooms. Kitchens, storerooms and domestic offices also occupied a lot of space on the ground floor and there were wine cellars and fuel stores below ground level. By all accounts, the African influence from Abe Bailey’s ownership remained as part of the building’s interior theme years later: Abbey school’s main rooms were still adorned with hunting trophies and many other artefacts from Africa.

Caricature of Abraham "Abe" Bailey (1864-1940), later Baronet.

Could you Lead our Girls into the Future? This summer marked a new era in Girlguiding with the launch of the biggest overhaul in its history which revamps the iconic badges and activities to create a contemporary programme for young girls named: #everygirls. Volunteers are at the heart of Girlguiding and as they are running a little sparse in this area, the Ashdown Forest Living approached Amanda McNally, who has just taken over as leader of the 1st Forest Row Brownies and is joint District Commissioner for Forest Row & Hartfield, to explain more:

Why did you decide to become a Girlguiding volunteer? I was looking for a voluntary role to complement my career in animal welfare and had a strong desire to make a difference in young people’s lives.

What does the Brownies offer our girls from Forest Row and the local area? Our unit meets every Thursday, in term time, for 1 ½ hours of pure unadulterated girl led fun! Alongside traditional activities associated with Brownies: baking, local history and learning about our environment, we have a full programme leading, for example, to the ‘Future Girl’ badge which involves coding, building robots and

even learning about digital design with our partners Google. It is the balance between today’s technology driven world and the outdoor experience that is so exciting. We love to get out to learn new skills: campfire building, circus skills, climbing, etc., much of which takes place at Blackland Farm Activity Centre just up the road from Forest Row which we are lucky to have literally on our doorstep – it is one of only four centres of this type for Brownies in the country.

the moment are hands-on volunteers - the commitment isn’t huge, just as much as you can give. We are grateful for any support, particularly from our own community. Continues over the page.

What do you need to be a volunteer? A passion for making a difference, wanting to enrich young girls lives. From administration to fundraising, there are many ways to help, but what we really welcome and need at
