Ashdown Forest

Dear Residents Welcome to the first edition of the Ashdown Forest Living. This is a business & community publication serving the residents of Ashdown Forest & surrounds. Our purpose is to connect local businesses, community groups & charities to people in & around this beautiful area. We hope you take the time to look through and enjoy the publication. Feedback of every kind is most welcome especially from local charities and community groups for which promotion, through this publication, would be of great benefit. We are extremely lucky to live on or near the Ashdown Forest and certainly many would agree that this is a binding focal point for residents living rurally, in villages and in the bordering towns in this area. We intend for the publication to be used to the benefit of the this area through featuring local articles of interest, all of the many goings-on & promoting local businesses here & nearby. This month we are lucky to feature Nick Weston, author of Tree House Diaries: How to live wild in the woods and his story of rediscovering his roots… (see page 8) Another feature: the Ashdown Art & Artworks groups of Forest Row, who are creating a truly blossoming hub for artists in this area. SafePoint, the internationally renowned Ashdown Forest based charity tells us about their amazing work & global challenge. Finally, we hope you make the most of the summertime and thank you for any feedback given, it is all welcome. All the best, Tally & Chris Ashdown Forest Living Team

Hate being overweight? Over three years ago, I was 5 stone overweight and felt continuously tired. I was faced with having to take medication for the rest of my life to handle my cholesterol as it was dangerously high. I was desperate to find a way to lose my weight.

Jan 07

May 07

May 10

Two of my friends had lost their weight with Rachel and I was very inspired by their results. Having tried so many different ways of losing weight, I felt going to Rachel was my last chance. I started my weight loss program in Jan 07 and within five months I had lost five stone. My cholesterol was then retested and much to my delight it was normal! This was achieved without having to take medication. My constant tiredness was replaced with an abundance of energy and other well being benefits. By following the simple guide lines for weight maintenance, it has been very easy to keep my weight off. I can only say that I am extremely happy to be the same size as I was when I finished the program three years ago. The support Rachel gives for weight loss and maintenance is very personal and motivating – it would be hard to find elsewhere. I have personally known at least 20 people who have lost their weight with Rachel and have all got excellent results. My health and well being has greatly improved. Shopping for clothes is a real pleasure now. It is wonderful to be finally free from dieting - very liberating!

….to the trees Article by Nick Weston, Author Tree House Diaries: How to live wild in the wood

There is a tree, not too far from goat’s cross roads, a grand old Scots pine with it’s lowest branch just within the grasp of a 8 year old. I used to climb to the top of the pine and simply gaze out upon the rolling hills of Sussex until they climaxed with the rise of the South Downs. To a small boy it seemed like the end of the earth, but I knew then, just as I do now that out there was adventure, adventure so close, I could touch it, smell it and see it everyday. Twenty years later and that tree still holds the same magic it did all those years ago. I was incredibly lucky to grow up on the forest, I had a playground the other side of the garden fence that in it’s own way has shaped the person I am today: from damming streams and building camps to stalking rabbits and climbing trees, all of these activities subtly encouraged by my parents, gave me more pleasure than a TV ever could. The Bible for a young lad growing up on the forest was the SAS survival handbook, I still have mine: dogeared and stained with dirt, a tome of absolute self-sufficiency, but how often do we find ourselves in such extreme situations? Perhaps that is what prompted my six-month experiment living amongst the leaves? A return to the forest after five unfulfilling years of chasing the pound in the urban sprawl of London was more than just a new lease of life. To create an existence with your bare hands is a wonderful thing indeed and that was exactly what I set out to achieve. We have become so far removed from our connection with the land, the subtle changes of the seasons and rarely appreciate the incredible landscape around us. By July 2010 • Ashdown Forest Living

building a tree house from recycled and natural materials, planting a vegetable patch and adapting to the simple life of a hunter-gatherer, I was able see how many things we can do without, but above all, just how much we take for granted. So the next time, you step out onto the Ashdown forest, remember how lucky you are to have such a place on your doorstep, the adventure that it can offer and of course…all those trees to climb! So what drives someone to give up conventional adult life and go back to basics? I suppose it was, in a sense, a wish to return to those carefree days of my youth in which anything seemed possible and the tree house was the manifestation of such dreams. At a time when the recession was in full swing, the only pressing

question I had to ask myself was…why not? What began as an experiment to see if it was a lifestyle I could adhere to in the future soon became one in which I was thriving and thoroughly enjoying. I feel truly honored to have had a book published about my experience and the chance to share it with anyone who is looking for something they feel they may have lost. The Tree House Diaries: How to live wild in the woods (Publisher: Collins & Brown) is more than just a manual on the trials and tribulations of stumbling selfsufficiency, it is a story of what can happen when you throw caution to the wind, get your hands on a P45 and take control of your own life…

Gardening Tips for JULY Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Shrubs. Summer blooming shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches. Fertilize flowering shrubs like Azaleas, Camellias and rhododendrons immediately after they have finished flowering with an ericaceous fertilizer. Deadhead the developing seedpods from your Rhododendrons and Azaleas to improve next year’s blooms. Be careful not to damage next year’s buds, which may be hidden just below the pod.

Roses

Fruit & Vegetables Fertilize June bearing strawberries after the harvest, and everbearing varieties half way through the season. Protect your fruit from the birds with netting. Ensure adequate watering during dry spells.

Feed roses monthly throughout the summer. Spray regularly with an organic insecticide and fungicide to keep pest and disease at bay.

Lawns

Miscellaneous

During dry spells raise the cutting height of the mower. Taller grass keeps the roots cooler and helps to preserve moisture in the soil longer. Avoid using fertilizers in hot, dry weather.

Continue to deadhead annuals to increase flowering period. Fertilize patio containers and tubs with a general purpose liquid feed. Keep an eye out for slug and snail damage and treat accordingly.

Where the ride divides, bear right, leaving the pitch, and bear right at the next divide after 300ml. The ride descends more steeply and swings right and downhill into woodland & to a bridge over a streamm. This area is known as Tabell Ghyll. Its woodland is most unusual for the public part of the Forest with its many large trees, especially beech, and several hectares of planted sweet chestnut coppice. The area was sold off from the common land of the Forest in 1693 and only ‘returned’ during World War Two in exchange for the compulsory purchase of land elsewhere for military reasons. In the map of 1931 (below) the heavily wooded Ghyll is in marked contrast to the heath

to the north of the stream – a reflection of different land use over 250 years. On crossing the bridge there is a choice of routes: either continue up the track and follow it for 1.3 km, or turn right after about 15m and follow a small path that gradually climbs uphill parallel to the stream, and along an old boundary bank, for about 1.0 km. Ashdown Forest based Charity

SafePoint Trust

& their global challenge Mums taking the challenge

Background Marc Koska OBE has worked tirelessly over the last 25 years on Global Healthcare with a particular focus on Injection Safety. After spending years researching the syringe industry Marc invented an AD (Auto Disable) syringe – the K1, that physically prevents re-use. To-date Marc and the K1 have been credited with saving well over 9 Million lives, but product alone will never stop this silent epidemic, which is why Marc set up The SafePoint Trust in 2006. The main purpose of SafePoint is to use information to solve this basic healthcare need and this is achieved by delivering hard-hitting, powerful public awareness campaigns. Marc and SafePoint have two approaches: first they work hard to ensure that the public are educated at grass root level, through short public information films and secondly they lobby extensively for legislation change at ministerial level.

Shocking facts & figures: Each and every year due to unsafe injections there are: • • • • • • • •

23,000 HIV Infections 1,000,000 Hepatitis C Infections 21,000,000 Hepatitis B Infections RESULTING IN 1,300,000 DEATHS EACH YEAR (WHO, World Health Organisation, figures) Malaria kills 1,000,000, so this silent epidemic kills more people each year (according to the WHO) At least 50% of injections given were unsafe (report written by WHO) A syringe is used on average 7 times in the developing world Every 24 seconds a child dies as a result of an unsafe injection

Global Challenge: Climbing Killimangaro & Tanzania A team of five mums will climb Kilimanjaro at the end of October, raising enough money to donate 2 Million syringes to Tanzania. The syringes will be presented to Hon Prof. David Mwakyusa, Health Minister, once the team have completed the climb. SafePoint are raising this money through corporate (or personal) donations of £5,000, for more information or a sponsorship pack, please contact: info@safepointtrust.org. Tanzania are at the forefront of safe healthcare in Africa, they are to become one of only two countries converted to using AD syringes in this ECSA (East, Central & Southern Africa) Region. With a policy in place, trained healthcare workers and a public information film donated by SafePoint, they are ready to reduce country medical costs and ease the HIV / Hepatitis disease burden. More importantly with this donation we will ensure they have enough product to stock their 26 regions at the start of this initiative. Further information: www.marckoska.com www.safepointtrust.org.
