Testimonial: “I just wanted to say thank you both so much for doing such a brilliant job—and for coming out so quickly to do it. I still can’t believe it’s done—I am eternally grateful and if anyone else needs some work done you guys will be at the top of the list. Fantastic—thank you again.” Louize Mason-Styrron “We have employed Allzones Roofing over the past 5 years, in this time they have re-tiled a large house built in 1916 including dormers and gables. Re-tiled a cottage roof using new tiles on one side and re using the old tiles on the other side. Removed felt from a roof on a large studio and replaced with fibre cement based tiles. Recently re-tiled a bungalow with shingle tiles (wood). All the work has been carried out with efficiency and excellent workmanship throughout. I would recommend this company.”

Dear Residents,
Whats inside this month
I hope summer is proving warm and sunny for us all. This month we have a fascinating article about Chartwell which is just north of the Ashdown Forest which was of course the home of Churchills. Art is very strong in this area and we will soon have a new Brit school for Mid Sussex opening in Haywards Heath which is very exciting news. See our Q&A on page 8.

The Dog Days of Summer "Dog days" refers to the hot, sultry, most uncomfortable days of summer, originally in areas around the Mediterranean Sea; we rarely truly experience these types of heatwaves - and in any case if we do they never last long enough for us to really suffer. The expression was soon colloquially absorbed across other areas of Europe. Does it have anything to do with feeling like you're 'sweating like a dog' because you're boiling all the time? No. The expression was drawn from the coincidence of very warm temperatures in the early civilizations in both North Africa and the Near East with the rising, at sunrise, of the ever bright Orion's dog, the 'dog star', in the constellation Canis Major. The dog star's official name is Sirius, captured in modern culture by the Sirius Black character in the Harry Potter stories who could turn into a dog at will.
The association of this phrase with weather traces back to the Ancient Egyptians, in the poetic text of the Greeks and later still in Roman texts. Indeed an elaborate folklore associated with Sirius was propagated by the Greeks… "(Its) first appearance… in the morning skies during the final days of July and early August indicated the arrival of the sweltering heat of late summer… associated with heat, fire, and even fevers.” In the epic poem 'the Iliad' by Homer (the Greek Homer, not Simpson!) is written: 'Sirius rises late in the dark, liquid sky On summer nights, star of stars, Orion's Dog they call it, brightest Of all, but an evil portent, bringing heat And fevers to suffering humanity.' In England we might be happy for any dog days to occur at all (please?!), but clearly this sentiment is not shared in hotter climes where it used to apparently give way to a gamut of ills. Through the 19th century, it continued to be perceived as an ominous time of evil, wherein "the Sea boiled, the
6
Wine turned sour, Dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies (frenzies)" as illuminated by Brady in his Clavis Calendaria (1813). These days dog days are standing-under-the-air-con-times in hot southern countries. In business dog days can refer to the time in July when it is typically one of the quietest months of the year for stock trading, so the traditional meanings of heat and disease have been extended to business inactivity. The Anglo-Saxons considered the dog days to run from the 14th July to 5th September. The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional period of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning 3rd July and ending 11th August, coinciding of course with the rising of the Dog Star. These are also the days of the year with the least rainfall in the Northern Hemisphere. The metaphorical sense of the dog days has been captured in modern culture in prose, poetry, songs, et al. A NEW BRIT SCHOOL FOR US? How will this tie in with your dance school will it specialise in dance in particular? GAPA has grown in size and reputation and our dance training is at an extremely high level, thanks to our high profile professional dance faculty and the wonderful purpose built facilities at the Hub. We will further develop our dance provision alongside our drama and musical theatre strands, adding two additional strands - art (encompassing art, design, photography, costume and fashion, theatre and set and design) and media and technology (film and TV production, computer design and technology). I believe that we will be able to offer every child at least one genre of art form that they are interested and gifted in.
Art has always been strong in this part of Sussex and Suzanne Gielgud of the prestigious Gielgud Academy is embarking on a very courageous dream of a new free school for Mid Sussex which will espouse the arts in all their glory. Here she explains:
What reception have you had so far? The reception so far has been phenomenal, from parents and children in the locality, the Department for Education, the Free Schools Network, West Sussex County Council (WSCC) and Mid Sussex District Councillors as well as high profile names from the arts world. Legendary Dame Beryl Grey, retired British prima ballerina who lives locally in Danehill, is right behind us every step of the way. She wrote to me recently saying: “You and your staff have achieved an outstanding high standard of dance in a variety of different styles giving children of all ages an education in working together and in a happy harmonious atmosphere. I sincerely hope your attempt to acquire this building will be looked upon with favour and an understanding of the true value good dance training adds to the lives of young people.”
What was your main inspiration behind starting this new free school? When I started the Gielgud Academy (GAPA) five years ago it was always with the intention to turn it into a full time school, so that children in this area could benefit from the same amazing experience that I had during my childhood. I grew up in East Grinstead and was lucky enough to be a pupil at the Bush Davies School which was the leading vocational school in the county. Sadly, it closed in 1988 and many of the school buildings and its theatre (the Adeline Genée) were demolished in 2010, so in 2011 I decided that I had to build a school in its honour which would be inspired by its achievements and, like Bush Davies, would be a Centre of Excellence for education and the arts. We’ve been running GAPA part time on Saturdays and every evening since then, with huge success. However when I heard the news that Central Sussex College was closing down its 6th form colleges in both East Grinstead and Haywards Heath, I knew this was the time to turn GAPA into the full time school I had envisioned. The Haywards Heath campus (The Hub), where we’ve been based, has state of the art dance, music and drama studios, as well as a theatre and three floors of new modern classrooms including science labs, photographic studios and spacious art and design studios. It is the perfect venue for a full time, all-through school for children age 5-18, offering a strong academic provision with a specialism in the arts. We are proposing to run this as a free school, so that all children can benefit from it, regardless of their parents’ income.
Why do you think a school such as this is needed in this area? There is a desperate need for more primary school places across Sussex and from 2017 there will be no more state funded 6th form A level provision at all in Haywards Heath or East Grinstead. There is also a desire in this area for a full time school with an arts specialism because currently children gifted in the arts have to travel up to the Brit School, or to London, to combine their education with professional level performing arts training. To take part in the survey and provisionally register interest go to www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GAPAfreeschool GAPA’s telephone number is 01444 446882

How to Survive 100 years Uckfield landmark the Picture House cinema has lots to celebrate in 2016. Not only has it graced the Wealden town with its presence for 100 years (monumental in the everchanging world of cinema!), it is also the proud winner of ‘the Best Independent Cinema in Europe’ award. Bestowed upon it last year, they had to beat off stiff competition from across the country to retain it. The Markwick family have owned the cinema since 1964 and since that time it has been transformed from a single screen to a stateof-the-art three-screen cinema and restaurant to rival any in the West End. The key to its longevity is constantly striving to keep up with the times. A Little Look at its History In 1881 a local surveyor, William Rawlinson Atkinson, acquired for £625 a parcel of land, on part of which stands the Picture House. It was inherited in 1897 by his daughter, Mrs Leila Eveleen Measures, who then purchased the adjacent plot in 1905. Ten years later plans for a proposed cinema submitted on behalf of Mrs Measures were rejected by the Buildings Committee of Uckfield District Council on the grounds that they did not conform to the by-laws or public health regulations enshrined within the 1909 Cinematograph Act. However, on 7th May 1915, the plans were approved subject to alterations. The architect was Walter Long. A list of architects held by the RIBA mentions a WH Long of Leeds and, although
Long is not thought to have been local, the exterior treatment of the building suggests someone more fully conversant with the vernacular revival style employed in rural areas across south east England than might an architect from Yorkshire.
licence to a rival establishment. Films did commence at the Picture House in August 1920 and have continued ever since.
The building opened in 1916 but at first it operated as a garrison theatre for the troops stationed in the local area. Films were already evident in Uckfield, from possibly as early as 1904, at the converted Foresters Hall in Harcourt Road. This cinema was operated by a local magistrate and no one knows how true the story is, however there were whispers that he may have been reluctant to grant a

Mrs Measures bequeathed the cinema to her daughter, Mrs Leila Alicia Corbett Neale, and she inherited it in 1925. A letter of 1931 surviving in the East Sussex Records Office is from her tenant William Harper (who lived in Forest Hill, London). It informed Mrs Neale that he was “contemplating putting in a talkie very shortly ….. I am compelled as silents are not being produced …. the electric is in the town, without the electric current (the) talkie was out of the question. ignored their letters saying I didn’t intend selling, they have come to my private house bothering me”. In the same year Mrs Neale sold the cinema outright to Harper.
Queuing for Grease
For how long Harper ran the cinema himself we are not sure. We have a copy of a lease dated 14th August 1958 in the name of PV Reynolds, however there is another document dated the day after for permission to carry out alterations to the Picture House, namely the installation of CinemaScope. So it may be that Reynolds held a previous lease. Reynolds died either in late 1963 or early 1964 and his wife Doris sold the lease to Roy Markwick on 1st February 1964. It has remained with the Markwick family ever since. In September 1964 the Picture House opened on a Sunday for the first time with the double feature Circus of Horrors and Conga. The Markwick family have presided over the biggest changes at the Picture House. Roy refurbished the cinema, which had fallen into a sorry state of disrepair, in 1967. The seating was also refurbished and reduced in number from 500 to 305 for increased comfort. The cinema was also extensively redecorated. As cinema admissions continued to fall throughout the seventies Roy decided that the Picture House would have difficulty surviving as a single screen. Ambitious plans were drawn up to convert the cinema to two screens, and in December 1978 the single screen version of the Picture House closed down with a performance of Death Wish. Screen Two opened for business on 19th March 1979 with the Clint
Eastwood movie Every Which Way But Loose.
The construction of a third screen began on September 1st 1999, when the back of the building containing the old stage and the existing box for the number one theatre was demolished. Over the next six months large excavations were carried out to get the new theatre in at right angles to the building and underneath the new box for number one.
The conversion was simple but very effective. A wall was constructed in the centre of the old auditorium and the circle, which in fact was a stadium or raised section, became number two. A new box was constructed on the old stage and shot the picture onto the new dividing wall, under a new false ceiling. Number One theatre opened in May with the Robert Powell film The Thirty-Nine Steps. The twinning saved the Picture House from almost certain closure as admissions began to rise. The cinema was refurbished again in 1989, when the foyer was extended and the cinema had brand new seats for the first time and was completely re-carpeted. Computerised ticketing was also introduced when yet again the transformation in business was startling. Stereo sound was installed in 1992 and a constant updating of equipment has continued to this day. Sadly, Roy Markwick died in 1994 and his son Kevin now runs the family business.
14
The new cinema opened on February 11th 2000 with a performance of The Beach. Further technical improvements are being made all the time which is the successful mindset to keeping the cinema successful and viable. A new refurbishment is planned that will see a radical change to the foyer space and improvements to seating and soundproofing over the next 12 months. TAKE THE BUS FOR A WALK! deficient eco system of the forest.
When it was announced that the Saturday service of route 261 (East Grinstead - Uckfield) was to be cut out, Wealdlink, the charity based in Winniethe-Pooh’s village of Hartfield which provides community transport services throughout North Wealden, were asked what they could do to help. They had already been looking at the possibility of providing a service on the Ashdown Forest, enabling visitors and locals to do the forest walks without using highly polluting cars. Now they have launched a new service, 262, which will not only partially replace the Saturday 261, taking passengers from Nutley and Maresfield to and from Uckfield, but will also be able to take walkers to the heart of the forest, enabling tourists and locals alike to visit the Enchanted Places that appear in the Winnie The Pooh books.
route revealing stunning views across the extensive heathland as it stops at several local attractions, including Nutley Windmill, Pooh Corner, the Llama Park and the Forest Visitor Centre. This addition to the Forest Explorer bus network is an initiative supported by Wealden Bus Alliance, Wealdlink, Maresfield Parish Council and Uckfield Town Council. It is a much kinder way to enjoy Ashdown Forest, helping to reduce vehicle exhaust emission which threaten the nitrogen-
“The circular journeys allow visitors and walkers to alight at one of the many stops, take a healthy walk, a leisurely stroll or just soak up the view, and then board the next bus either at the same point or somewhere else along the route,” said Councillor Barry Marlowe, chairman of Wealden Bus Alliance, one of the backers of the new service. “In common with most rural bus services, where there are no defined stops passengers can flag down the bus for a pick up wherever it is safe to do so, in order to enjoy a great walk in the forest”. Visitors from East Grinstead can use the Metro Bus service to connect with the 262 Take the Bus for a Walk service at Hartfield or Wych Cross. For further information including times and fares, contact Wealdlink on 01892 771332, or visit www.4weald.co.uk or contact Cllr Barry Marlowe, Chairman, Wealden Bus Alliance, Tel: 01825 732364, email: cllr.barry. marlowe@wealden.gov.uk or Jim van den Bos, Communications Officer, Wealden District Council, Tel: 01892 602745.
The new service, part of the Forest Explorer network, will make four journeys every Saturday, following a circular

Summer Facts 1.
The word “summer” is from the Proto-Indo-European root sem-, which means “together/one”. (Such a wonderful meaning and a fabulous concept to try to follow this season!)
2.
In the summer heat, the iron of the Eiffel Tower expands, making the tower grow more than 6 inches.
3.
Ice lollies, a popular summer treat, were accidentally invented by an 11-year-old boy in San Francisco in 1905. He left a glass of soft drink sitting outside and by the next morning it had frozen. He began selling them at an amusement park in New Jersey and it took off from there.
4.
Another popular summer treat is watermelon which is part of the cucumber, pumpkin and squash family and consists of 92% water!
5.
10 years ago in 2006 it was the warmest summer to date in the UK with average daytime temperatures of 15.8°C.
6.
The coldest summer was in 1922, when average daytime temperatures for June, July and August were 12.3°C!
7.
The sunniest summer on record was in1976, when there were 669 hours of bright sunshine.
Fingers crossed for the best summer yet.

July Reminders for your Garden As you look out the window or wander down your garden path, your garden should be a picture of beauty, the summer perennials will be in full bloom, the bedding plants flowering at their very best, a complete riot of colour! If this isn’t the case in your patch then quite simply – try harder next year…
shady spot and leave them on saucers – a good drink before you go will help them. Mow the lawn before you go, they are pretty robust and even if it does dry out a bit it will soon recover on your return.
To prolong the roses’ flowering season prune them now after they have flowered (unless the rose produces hips). Go back down the stem about 10cm to the next healthy looking leaf; this encourages the new growth and you get a worthwhile second display. It’s also a good time to feed them after the first flush of flowering, a general purpose feed, and best to water it in and it will encourage an abundance of new blooms.
So happy holidays, happy gardening…
Certain hedges and shrubs should be pruned this month. Privet and Lonicera nitida should be cut and shaped as required. Philadelphus should be pruned to stop lots of unwanted straggly growth. Follow a flowering stem back to a side shoot that doesn’t have the remains of flower heads at its tip and cut just above it. Do this throughout the shrub; it will tidy it up and give a good display of flowers for the following year.
Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery
Wisteria should also be tackled this month. You will already have trained the main stems up the wall in the framework you are wanting to create. Now, cut back all the long, wispy tendrils to 15cm long. This encourages fewer leaves and more flowers. If the main stems are venturing beyond their limit cut them back too. Should the plant put a lot more growth on over the summer then repeat this process in winter. Perennials such as lupins and delphiniums can be cut back once they’ve finished flowering. Brunnera and pulmonaria can also be cut back. Generally anything not looking its best can be cut back leaving room for all the plants still to show off. If you’re going on holiday then think about how the garden will be watered. If you don’t have a friend who can pop in then move your pots to a more

Local family feature in charity film Chestnut Tree children’s hospice has recently launched a film featuring a family from Barcombe. The film aims to raise awareness of the charity in East Sussex, and the care that they can provide in children’s own homes. The Lundin family have been cared for by the Sussex-based charity since 2011 when they were seeking respite care for their youngest child. Dad Jason explains “Eva was born 13 weeks early, not breathing, and spent the first 108 days of her life in hospital. She was tiny but she fought hard, she is now almost six years old and is a loving girl with Cerebral Palsy and chronic lung disease. She has come a long way since those early days, but she is still highly dependent on me and her mum for all of her needs. She cannot walk unaided, her weak chest means she is often dependent on oxygen, she is fed by a tube and she cannot speak to us. Of course, she communicates in her own way, and has even learnt a few signs, but caring for her is still
hugely demanding.” The family access a range of services at Chestnut Tree. A nurse visits regularly to take care of Eva whilst Jason and Mel spend some quality time together, and with Eva’s brother George. “It’s wonderful” Jason says, “to start with, the visits from the Chestnut Tree Nurse gave us time to get everyday tasks done, but now we use it as precious time for Mel and I to spend as a couple, which is really invaluable. And during the school holidays we try to use our visits to spend some time with George, doing the kinds of things that aren’t easy with Eva.”
Chestnut Tree cares for 300 children and their families across Sussex and never charges for its care. It costs well over £3.5 million every year to offer these services and less than 7% of its funding comes from central government, meaning it relies heavily on the generosity of the local community. “We are so proud of Eva and George and will treasure this film forever. Please, please tell as many people as you can about it - like, share, tweet, retweet, comment – and help Chestnut Tree reach more children and families like us that need them. Thank you so much!” You can see Eva’s film on www. chestnut-tree-house.org.uk/ handsup, by liking Chestnut Tree House on Facebook, or by following @HandsUpToHelp.

CHURCHILL’S HOME COMFORTS OF CHARTWELL Chartwell is just north of the Ashdown Forest, it is famous for its eternal association with one of the most famous leaders in history: Winston Churchill. Here is a little of its history: Churchill commissioned the architect Philip Tilden to help turn Chartwell into a home – modernising the originally rather gloomy Victorian mansion, adding a garden wing of three large reception rooms. So much work was undertaken that it was not until April 1924 that Churchill, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer for his first five years at Chartwell, could spend his first night in the property.
It is said that home is where the heart is and in the heart of the Weald of Kent is the beloved former home of ex-British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and his family for more than 40 years.
by painting and by transforming
800 acres of rolling farmland and woodland had been part of Chartwell since 1848, but it wasn’t until 1921 that the land was divided into smaller lots and sold at auction – in 1922 Churchill bought a lot. The lot Churchill bought was a house with land totalling 82 acres; the house Churchill called home was where he brought up his young family and would go on to be remembered very affectionately.
house and gardens.

The early years at Chartwell were followed by what has become known as his wilderness years in the 1930s when he was out of office and did much of his writing to keep the family finances afloat. Many know of Churchill’s role as Prime Minister and wartime leader but few know of his artistic side, a passion brought to life by Chartwell with its inspiring landscape and views of the Kent countryside. It was only at the age
Situated two miles south of Westerham, Churchill loved the house and its views – the grounds gave Churchill the peace and tranquillity that he craved during the testing times of the Second World War. He relaxed

Testimonial “It was a real pleasure to have Lewis and Phil constructing our oak-framed garage and Imperial Framing has our highest recommendation. Not only were they extremely hard working, conscientious and diligent but also highly-adept in their traditional skills, concerned to provide value for money and committed to achieving a fabulous result.” Sally and David Lamb
Churchill’s eye at the Chelsea Flower Show in 1948. So taken was she by the garden on display at the annual horticultural show that the designer behind the project installation, Gavin Jones, gave it to her as a gift and she only paid for its transport to Chartwell. Besides painting, swimming was another one of Churchill’s many pastimes; he constructed his very own oval heated pool within the grounds during the 1930s with his usual thoroughness. Churchill took the advice from his scientist friend Frederick Lindemann, 1st Viscount Cherwell, on the amount of water needed to fill it and from a chemist on the correct chemicals to keep it clean.
of 41 that Churchill began to pick up a paintbrush at all after his sister-in-law encouraged him to try painting – it became an engrossing occupation remaining with him for life.
A tennis court for Clementine Churchill was transformed after the Second World War to allow croquet to be played over it - Churchill only played the lawn-based game occasionally. When he did play, his opponents said of his action: “He used to wield the croquet mallet single-handed like the polo stick with which he had become expert as a young man.”
Chartwell boasted a sizeable art studio teeming with canvases, many of which were unframed and in various stages of completion – today, many of these have been saved for the nation to cherish. The studio was built in the 1930s as a space for Churchill to paint without interruption and soon became his favourite refuge as whenever he was not outdoors he was in the studio painting. It is said that the studio proved to be a blessing for Churchill’s wife Clementine as it stopped him dripping paint on the carpets in the main house and offered an area for his art materials.
The National Trust acquired Chartwell in 1946 from a group of businessmen who had purchased it from Churchill for £50,000, as he was finding the upkeep of the house and gardens very expensive. The house and gardens were given to the National Trust on the condition that the Churchills could continue to live there for as long as they wished and they did for almost 20 years after this deal.
Churchill’s paintings included many recognisable landscapes from Chartwell itself as well as landscapes which Churchill worked on during his travels to parts of Egypt, Marrakech and Paris. Churchill summed-up his passion for painting best when he once said: “When I get to Heaven I mean to spend a considerable portion of my first million years in painting.”
Sir Winston Churchill left Chartwell in October 1964 in poor health, moving to his London flat in Hyde Park Gate - he celebrated his 90th birthday on November 30, 1964, and died on January 24, 1965. Perhaps the greatest orator, statesman and Briton of his day, or any other day for that matter, he was a renowned writer, historian, artist and sometime bricklayer and remains a towering figure.
The grounds at Chartwell, with its wide-open views across lakes, lawns and the wider Weald of Kent, made the gardens a feast for the eyes, whatever the season and whatever the weather. The lakes were one of the reasons Churchill bought Chartwell; he viewed them as offering huge potential for a water feature he could create and he set to work on them soon after moving in. A lower lake existed when he bought the property but in 1924 an upper lake was created - the lakes were camouflaged by brushwood to reduce the risk of bombing raids during the Second World War.
Lady Clementine Churchill left Chartwell in June 1965 to live in London. The house and gardens opened to the public in the summer of 1966 offering a glimpse into the Churchill family life. It was decided to show the house as it was in the 1930s, the era when Winston, Clementine and their four children were all in residence and Churchill spoke out in favour of rearmament. The garden suffered damage in the great storm of 1987 but, after restoration, today the house, a home to a Prime Minister, remains a popular tourist attraction in the South East of England.
The lakes offered another fascinating feature to the gardens and nothing was more fascinating than the rock garden – this feature caught Clementine

This Kitchen company, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman who has been a kitchen designer for over 20 years. Six years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen, that suit their budgets and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge: “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget requirements and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you might think. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. The breathable fabric and robust flexible construction means you don’t have to look at the dead flies trapped in your pleated blinds because you can simply shake them off and then when you want to remove any dust or dirt you can wash them in your machine at 30 degrees. Curtaincraft have been a leading supplier of curtain and blinds for over 20 years, and when Nigel Hogg owner of Curtaincraft Ltd saw InShade Conservatory sails blinds at the British Blinds and Shutters Association trade show he instantly recognised the benefits. For the first time ever you have a solution that not only controls the heat but also truly enhances the conservatory and the time you spend in it. Unique within the blinds industry the design led process is tailored to how you want to use your conservatory to ensure that you get the best possible solution to suit the way you want to use the space.
than ever before, enjoying all of the benefits of a glazed roof without suffering from excessive heat on all of those beautiful sunny days. Paul Baglin at InShade says “customers are always amazed by the transformation, they feel an instant impact on the heat as soon as the sails are put up. Once they see the sunlight filtering through the sails they love the way they look and make the space feel. Then later when it’s needed they really appreciate how easy they are to clean”. Nigel and his team work closely with the specialist designers at InShade to tailor each solution to your requirements, budget and the look you want.
The whole process works because InShade conservatory sail blinds are made from a unique solar control fabric. The ISX fabric is 100% UK made and provides the ultimate in heat control, solar efficiency and has been proven to be durable in even the most extreme temperatures. This is important because the air temperature inside the roof of your conservatory often reaches more than 70 degrees centigrade when the roof vents are closed. So with the most effective heat control available you can enjoy your conservatory more

Quick Quiz
Answers on page 38
1: What is the earliest surviving system of laws? 2: Who was the first democratically elected President of Russia? 3: What type of shots are woods used for in golf? 4: What is the name given to those who study and predict earthquakes ?
Marion Thorpe
5: Who is CEO of Tesla Motors?
Marion was born in Worthing on the 22nd of May 1950, the third child of Walter and Margaret, and sister to Chris and Pat. At the age of sixteen, she left school to train as a nurse at Southlands Hospital; this was to be a vocation that would stay with her for life. Marion was wife to Jon and mum to David, Jonathan, Tom, and me. For the last thirty years, she made Crowborough her home.
6: Who founded Harrods? 7: From which plant is opium derived? 8: What name was given to the Spanish conquerors of large parts of south and central America in the 16th century? 9: Where did the Great fire of London break out in 1666?
Community was always very important to Marion, and, wherever she was, she threw herself into local life. In Crowborough, that included St John’s School, Crowborough Hospital, the Horder Centre, the Sue Ryder Charity shop and Girl Guiding. This last will always shape my personal memories of her. Camp was the aspect of guiding she loved the best; she really came into her own contending against the elements, stubbornly wearing shorts in all weathers, staying up to patrol the site and shush late night whisperers, and getting up early to light the morning fire and make the all-important cup of tea (never actually finished).
10: Which actor plays the leading role in BBC's Peaky Blinders?
Sudoku
Marion was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2015, and she died this March. Hospice in the Weald was with us every step of the way, and I cannot praise their work highly enough. The service they provide to people in our situation is exemplary. I can’t imagine how much harder this would have been without them.
© Kevin Stone [www.brainbashers.com]
Marion loved her family, the sea, stripy clothes, singing around a campfire in the dark, jelly babies, and advocaat at Christmas. The last year has been terrible because we have known that we were losing her, but it has also been so full of love. That is fitting, because she had so much of it for all of us. By supporting the Hospice I hope I am able to spread that love and care a little further. The Langborough Singers will be singing in memory of Marion Thorpe from 7pm on Saturday 23rd July at the United Church, Croft Road, Crowborough. All proceeds will be donated to Hospice in the Weald.
