The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh is a new book by author Kathryn Aalto. Here is a ‘Q&A’ with her about her book which largely features the Ashdown Forest, ‘Pooh country’: The 90th Anniversary of the first Winnie-the-Pooh book is next year. How have these classic books endured and why do you think they grow in popularity? The phenomenal success of the books was immediate and came not merely from stories about a boy and his animal chums romping through an imaginary landscape. A. A. Milne and his illustrator E. H. Shepard were like the Lennon-McCartney of their time. There was a magical interplay between writer and artist, between words and images, and Milne’s sensitive perceptions of children between the ages of 4 and about 9 years old. In a 2014 YouGov poll, Winnie-the-Pooh was named as the favourite children’s book of the past 150 years in England. When we read them, we’re transported to that particular time of our lives when we believed our stuffed animals were real. Yes, and I think at a storytelling level, Milne was at his peak in 1920s. He had been a famous humourist and playwright prior to writing these books for his son, the real Christopher Robin. The stories have classic structure - three acts with a few surprising twists and turns. The characters are clearly drawn and relatable - Pooh is like a three year-old child; Piglet is a timid fellow; Rabbit is an organiser who likes to draw up bureaucratic Rissolutions; Owl pontificates; Tigger is effervescent and can’t control his bounce while Eeyore - well, everyone knows him. The

stories are tender adventures with humour and hums; slapstick and puns; danger, suspense and resolution. And tying them together are soft satin ribbons of compassion, friendship and heroism. These are all familiar to us. Can you now describe what inspired you to write the book? When I moved to England from Washington State in 2007, I discovered the ancient network of public footpaths -- a true national treasure. As a family, we began walking a lot to get to know this new landscape. I was also reading classic books to my three kids, including Winnie-thePooh. I became curious then about the Hundred Acre Wood -- was it real and could we visit it?

But it was more than just that. As a landscape historian and designer, and teacher of American Literature of Nature and Place, I examined the physical and cultural landscape, and material available, and realised there was a big, wonderful and relevant story to tell -- a fresh reading of an old classic. As a parent and landscape historian, I was fascinated by how the English landscape and the nature of childhood had changed since Milne was a child. He and his older brother Ken walked eighteen miles one day when they were just eight years old in the 1880s. Children these days just don’t do that. It was all fascinating and so I ended up writing a book about it all. The NATURAL WORLD OF WINNIE-THE-POOH is available now everywhere on-line and

Pre-publication interest has been phenomenal. It has amazed everyone, not the least me! This summer, I shot a taster documentary for BBC 4 based on the book. For National Public Radio in Washington, D.C., a correspondent recorded an interview with me for a show with 12 million listeners per week. There are forthcoming reviews and stories in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune and dozens of other media sources. I have more than 50 venues I am visiting on my book tours. As you can see, it’s been rather overwhelming. With reflections on the changing nature of childhood itself, the book seems to have hit a cultural nerve amongst reviewers. Talk to me after it comes out! beautiful -- a real companion to the original Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. I am delighted with how the designer at Timber Press! As for my role, I am a bulldog when it comes to research. I love it. The story I tell is enriched by that as well as visits to the V&A, the E.H. Shepard Archives, the Wren Library at Trinity College, Cambridge as well as interviews and good old-fashioned hiking in Ashdown Forest. There are 41 original E. H. Shepard illustrations, dozens of pieces of historic ephemera and my own photography. As a writer, I carefully craft my writing and think it all came together very well. I cried when I first saw and read a hard copy.

childhood in the natural world. Even for Victorian times, his parents gave him considerable freedom, believing nature was the greatest teacher, and he and his brother Ken wandered great distances. His first piece of published writing is, and I quote it in the book, about an 18-mile walk in Ashdown Forest when he was 8 years old. Quote from the book: Why separate memory from what we see? The fusion of fiction and nonfiction, the real and the fantasy worlds, the links between literature and landscape, are so joyful. Having scoured all the information about Ashdown Forest, what would you say makes it most unique and different from other landscapes? Ashdown Forest is what is called a “plagioclimax” landscape. This simply means that it originated through human activity and is maintained through human activity and management. William the Conqueror created a deer park here and gave it to his brother, with the proviso that he could hunt it. People think ancient trees of the area were cut down for the Spanish Armada, but they were gone long before then: the Romans used the wood to fuel bloomeries for the production of iron. Of course, commoners have exerted a great influence on the place as they have collected wood, turf, bracken and top soil at one point. When you see nibblers on the forest -Hebridean sheep, Galloway cattle, and Exmoor ponies -- the Conservators are maintaining this large expanse of heathland and the rare wildlife it supports.

Lastly, the first part of the book is a biography of Milne and Shepard. How did their different childhood s inform the book? Milne had a happy childhood in the outdoors while Shepard’s mother died when he was 11, leaving a tremendous gap in his heart and his family life. Shepard had a sharpened sensitivity to drawing the emotions of people and even anthropomorphic animals. But also, the book is coming out at a time when people are concerned about children spending more time playing on digital landscapes (games, computers mobile phones) than in the real one. People want to return to “classic childhoods.” A. A. Milne’s books capture a classic childhood with Christopher Robin exploring the Hundred Acre Wood without adults. These was born from memories he had of his own golden childhood, of watching his only child -- the real Christophe Robin -- play games outdoors, and through his own vivid imagination as a writer. Milne had an extraordinary

We may not be Spring chickens, but we can still be Autumn chic! Is this the time of year when you look longingly at the season’s styles and cry, ‘Ooh I’d love to wear that but I’m too old?’ Well, don’t despair! It is always possible to interpret ‘the look’ in a more mature way, with the help of a few ‘anti-mutton’ rules:

Worries about showing your shape? Forget them. This season, the batwing sleeve is alive and well along with other loose fit jumpers and tops, many of which are long line. If you want a fitted style, wear the right size, rather than the one that’s a bit of a squeeze – much more flattering. You can always cut the label out! Wear these with a straight leg style trouser or jean – there are plenty out there with a high rise, which will help tuck your tummy in. And if you want to be totally on trend – drag out the flares! 70’s boho rules OK?!

Take advantage of the longer line cardigans and duster coats this season– they have the effect of lengthening and hiding some of those bits you’re not so proud of!

Less is more. Animal prints are ever popular during the winter months. Use them more subtly as a trim, lining or accessory – an ocelot print scarf, pair of pumps or handbag with a plain dress will work well. Leave the leopard skin leggings to Rod Stewart and his daughters!

Invest in good underwear. Lose inches where it counts and streamline your body shape by ridding yourself of unsightly bulges from bad fitting bras and don’t be proud - buy some control pants. All the celebrities have them!

If you feel safe in black then wear it! But add a softer colour near your face which is kinder to mature skin, or accessorise with statement jewellery. But this season, why not try navy as a base colour? Plenty of it about and wonderful with pinks, pale blues and greys. Embrace faux fur – a wonderfully feminine look, whatever your age. This season, look out for pastel colours and grey based animal prints in gilets, jackets and coats. Don’t fancy the teddy bear look? Then buy a fur headband or hat – or a fur collar for last year’s coat! Ponchos make a welcome return – perfect for any age! Choose your fabric from cashmere, tweed, jersey mixes, faux fur to mention but a few. Always a welcome extra layer in our uncertain weather conditions. Add a bit of bling if you like it. Look out for metallic boots, shoes, handbags and sparkly bits on jumpers and tops – no upper age limit!

10. Finally, be brave – we are real women after all.

Show those legs! In the winter months, you really can wear slightly shorter than knee length if you wear opaque tights. Change your look with your footwear: long and ankle boots, high and low heels, court shoes and pumps.

Atmospheric Ashdown by front cover artist Oliver Pyle For many years I have walked, photographed and painted 9.5 square miles of the Sussex countryside - the Ashdown Forest. For anyone with a love of the landscape, Ashdown offers amazing diversity; wide open heathland areas and also secret enclosed woodlands, long views across the surrounding counties but with intimate details of a richly varied flora and fauna. Ashdown Forest is not traditionally pretty in a ‘chocolate box’ kind of way. Indeed it can look dull, scruffy, and even at times, desolate. Such is the nature of heathland where indigenous species of gorse, heather and Scots Pines battle against the elements year after year. However, to leave the description there would do it a great injustice, for Ashdown is a stunning part of our countryside heritage, and those that know it intimately attest to its enchanting, almost magical nature. From my perspective that magic comes from the light and the seasonal variations. Visit the same place for long enough and you will see a thousand different landscapes. Walk down a rutted footpath on the Southern Slopes for example, through banks of dead heather on a grey October afternoon, and in a moment the scene may be transformed by a break in the cloud. Greys are replaced by warm browns and it is as though a spotlight is shining across the South Downs in the distance, highlighting their undulations. For both painter and photographer it is these moments that are so important and that make it impossible to

Winter Sun, Wren’s Warren resist Ashdown’s charms for very long. Painting exclusively in watercolour gives me the perfect medium to capture the light and the land. It allows me to work quickly and capture a sense of the place, the atmosphere if you like, with the fewest brush strokes possible. As an artist I am not concerned with recording every spike on a gorse bush, but rather presenting a sense of the place. Just spending time on the forest, walking, observing, helps my painting no end - noticing how the shadows fall across a path, smelling the decaying leaves on the woodland floor, and hearing the noise of deer calling across the valley. They all contribute to a sensory impression, and it is that which I seek to convey in my work. ‘Atmosphere’ in painting is often seen as an elusive concept that can’t be described. Well, here’s what I think - when you look at my watercolours I want

you to feel as though you are there, I want to convey to you those sensory experiences that I had when I was there. If you do, then as far as I am concerned the painting is a success. It has atmosphere. Get out onto Ashdown. Explore it. Understand it. Soak up its atmosphere and you will come to love it. Why not pick up a sketchpad or take your camera? It doesn’t matter if you never have before - give it a try! You will find that it forces you to spend just a little more time taking in your surroundings - and that is a wonderful experience! Lindfield Bonfire Night Lindfield Bonfire Society, now in their 121st year, have been fundraising all year to keep this special event in which the community comes together free for all who wish to come along. The committee members would like to publicly congratulate longstanding member Mr. Martin Durrant on the building of his 40th Guy! Work begins in August each year, and the end result is always stunning. The Welsh Halloween Nos Galan Gaeaf or, occasionally ‘Spirit Night’. Many traditions gradually grew up around the festival which slowly morphed (via the USA of course) into the Halloween that we know today. Human nature being what it is, inevitably, this ‘spirit night’ became connected with all things frightening and ominous... For instance, another welsh tradition call ‘Coelcerth’ was initiated wherein a fire was built, everyone placing stones with their names on in and around the fire. If any stone and name were missing the following morning, that person would die during the coming year! It is easy to imagine the apprehension and sheer horror as people looked for their stones the next morning - the pressures of modern day seem pale by comparison!

Another Welsh tradition was making masks in the hope of scaring evil spirits away - in modern day, of course, the Halloween masks of witches, ghouls, etc. are actually in the guise of ‘evil spirits’... But that was the heart of the art of carving faces on turnips and displaying them in windows: they weren’t there as an invitation for the ‘evil spirits’, as they are probably viewed today but quite the opposite. Turnip carving later made way for pumpkin carving which is now practised in copious amounts towards the end of October.

Long ago, before the industrialisation of Britain destroyed many of the old traditions in rural communities, the end of autumn and the first day of winter was the 1st November and it was a cause for celebration, why celebrate the coming of winter? it’s hard to tell, but the people probably needed some good memories to see them through this harsh time of year! November 1st as being the first day of winter seems like a pretty accurate assessment of the seasons, 21st December always feels too late a declaration as the official start of winter in this Northern Hemisphere country of ours. By the end of October the harvest had been gathered in, excess livestock had been culled or killed off and put into storage to see people through the colder days. There was a communal, festivity feel, with everyone who had participated in the growing of crops and the keeping of animals, coming together to celebrate.

Naturally ‘being frightened’ soon became an essential part of Nos Galan Gaeaf - Halloween. The image of ‘Y Hwch Ddu Gwta’, a black sow without a tail, accompanied by a headless woman, roaming the countryside together on Nos Galan Gaeaf, terrified everyone when the best place to be was inside your house in front of a roaring fire! And who can blame them.

One tradition that grew up around this jovial time was the harvest mare: corn would be fashioned into the shape of a horse and placed above the hearth. Getting the mare into the house became a game and the cause of much ‘horseplay’ (the origin of the term). Women tried to prevent it coming inside, trying to soak it with water, while the men attempted to keep it dry.

There were further superstitions like touching or smelling ground ivy, which was thought to make you see hags or witches while you sleep. Boys were told to cut 10 leaves of ivy, throw one away and put

the rest under their pillows in order to see who their future bride would be. Surprise, surprise that for girls who wanted to see who their future husband would be it was a much more arduous process. They had to grow a rose, train it around a large hoop, then slip through the hoop three times before cutting the rose and placing it under their pillow when they went to bed that night. Let us hope they got the answers they were looking for!

Like many Celtic festivals this particular festival was adopted by the Church with the advent of Christianity and it became the festival of All Saints on November 1st and All Souls Festival on November 2nd, continuing the tradition of remembering the souls that had passed on. However Halloween has completely eclipsed these festivals in modern day.

In the 18th century, as Britain changed from a rural to an urban, industrialised country, many (but not all) of the Halloween or Galan Gaeaf customs died out. The ‘spirit night’ on the 31st October is one celebration that has remained and the customs, which largely evolved in the USA , have been re-absorbed into our yearly calendar as a time to bring out the ghost tales and terrify you with visions of all sorts of ghoulish creatures.

Traditions on the 31st October varied, of course, between regions of the country. The American custom of trick or treating is presumed to have a Scottish origin, guising as it was known, while modern customs such as bonfires on Halloween night go back many years.

Meat-free cottage pie It’s easy to make this delicious cottage pie with vegetarian mince instead of beef. The curry powder spices up the flavour, yet isn’t too strong. Serves: 4 adults. Preparation time: 20 mins. Cooking time: 35 mins

What to do: 1. Cook the potatoes and butternut squash in a large saucepan of boiling water until tender, about 20 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan and gently fry the onion, garlic and carrots for 2-3 minutes, until softened. Add the vegetarian 600g potatoes cut into chunks mince, tomatoes and stock. Stir in the curry powder, then add the mushrooms and courgette. Bring to 500g butternut squash peeled and cut into chunks the boil, then reduce the heat and cook, stirring 1 tsp vegetable oil occasionally, for 15-20 minutes. Season with black 1 medium onion chopped pepper. 2 garlic cloves crushed

Ingredients:

2 carrots chopped 300g vegetarian mince 400g chopped tomatoes 150ml vegetable or chicken stock 2 tsp curry powder 100g closed cup mushrooms sliced 1 courgette grated 1 pinch ground black pepper 2 tsp cornflour

3. Preheat the grill, warming a large baking dish underneath for a few moments. Meanwhile, drain and mash the potatoes and butternut squash, seasoning with black pepper. 4. Blend the cornflour with 1 tbsp cold water and add it to the mince mixture, stirring until thickened. Transfer it to the warm baking dish and spoon the vegetable mash on top. Grill for about 8-10 minutes, until browned. Serve.

Pooh and his Pastimes Poohsticks is of course a national pastime fully realised on a small bridge in the Ashdown Forest in what is now known as Pooh country. It is one of the National Trust’s’ 50 Things To Do Before You Are 11 and ¾’ and is a game loved by adults and children alike. The Poohsticks Handbook written by Mark Evans, comedy writer for the BBC, is a charming and funny text which guides the reader through the intricacies of Pooh Sticks – from a brief history of the game (invented, of course, by Pooh Bear himself in ‘The House at Pooh Corner’) to strategies that can help avoid a soaking. We find out what the perfect Pooh stick looks like, what the optimum location is and about notable games of Poohsticks throughout history. What inspired you to pursue the pastime of Poohsticks? Doesn’t everyone play Poohsticks? As far back as I can remember, whenever I’ve found myself with other people on a bridge in a wood, there’s been an unspoken assumption that Poohsticks will be played. Poohsticks is part of the British syntax, along with tea, cricket and secretly liking rain.

How did come to decide to write a book about the subject?

With Love, from Forest Row Three local women from Forest Row: Clare Parker, Anna Kilpatrick and Rosa Martin decided to set up ‘Forest Row to the Jungle’ when, this summer, they took a van loaded with donations collected from the local community (tents, food pallets, warm clothes) to the Calais ‘Jungle’, a pop up ‘village’ where refugees are living in the hope of coming to Britain. They are preparing for their second visit within the next couple of days with another overwhelming response of giving from the local community. Here is some fascinating feedback about what they experienced so far: We’re a non-political group of women who live close to the South coast and seeing people in need so near to us, we are extending the help we can give. We don’t ourselves profess to have any solutions or to know what the right answers are to this situation, but we certainly see that they are people in need and that most of them want to return to their countries when the conflicts are finally over. It was a good feeling that there that we were, 3 women by ourselves heading into the ‘Jungle’. We drove right into the camp, it looked like a rural part of Africa, we had to wait 45 mins for our first contact to meet us. The population is all almost entirely male, if you drove into a British camp full of only males in difficult circumstances, you might feel threatened. However, we were made to feel very welcome and people began to wave, smile and greet us with kindness. We were absolutely welcomed, people were respectful and appreciative of the help. There

People were genuinely interested in us, asking where we were from, etc. When we carried out our organised distribution, lines were formed, women were particularly respected and those waiting were patient and for the most part relaxed. There were some quite harrowing realities of jungle life, for instance, there was a 12 year old who had escaped his country and he was on his own without any family around him. We saw an 18 year old man who just arrived lying on the floor, exhausted and confused. One of his few possessions was a mobile so he could call his brother who was able translate via another ‘jungle resident’ and let them know his situation and that he needed assistance to understand the systems for getting help in the camp. Naturally residents of the jungle have divided themselves into nationality groups; we noticed the Syrian group were the most ‘broken’ out of all the groups, conspicuous by their distance and absence in the queues which would form at distribution times. We met one Syrian guy who said that in

A group of 11 Sudanese young men, invited us into their tent to give us some of their precious clove tea after the distribution. We learned that they often wanted to come to England because they had learned English in schools and so it was where they felt they could build a new life, where they had some sense of understanding and connection. Most of the reasons people had fled their countries were due to conflicts that threatened their existence. Another reason people wanted to come to Britain in particular was that perhaps the ‘one living relative’ they had in a safe country happened to be in Britain. Some of them had just given up though, maybe having tried to jump on a Euro Tunnel train, they had then broken a limb, or they had finally decided to stay in France as it was too hard to try getting into England. Dr Peter Venn is a Consultant Sleep Physician who set up the Sleep Disorder Centre at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, in 1993, A leading expert in his field, he was the medical adviser on BBC1’s Goodnight Britain, and broadcasts regularly on both radio and television.

Dr Venn says, ‘Poor sleep is very common, and many people have chronic problems. Snoring and breathing disorders affect about 4% of middle-aged adults. Sleep apnoea is a disabling condition in which sufferers stop breathing whilst asleep with both medical and social consequences.”

High blood pressure and diabetes are frequent associations with sleep apnoea, leading to a higher risk of stroke and heart attack in middle age. Symptoms include snoring, stopping or struggling to breath and excessive tiredness in the daytime.

Literally thousands of lives have been transformed by Dr Venn with a device called a CPAP machine, which is used to treat sleep apnoea, and which guarantees to stop snoring completely – see photo. He calls this device “true preventative medicine that gives people their lives back” Like snoring, insomnia is an

increasing problem for many people. Sleeping tablets are usually NOT the best treatment, but Dr Venn’s expert advice will help to select an appropriate alternative after a full discussion and assessment in outpatients. Whatever your problem with sleep, Dr Venn will have seen it before.
