Testimonial: “I just wanted to say thank you both so much for doing such a brilliant job—and for coming out so quickly to do it. I still can’t believe it’s done—I am eternally grateful and if anyone else needs some work done you guys will be at the top of the list. Fantastic—thank you again.” Louize Mason-Styrron “We have employed Allzones Roofing over the past 5 years, in this time they have re-tiled a large house built in 1916 including dormers and gables. Re-tiled a cottage roof using new tiles on one side and re using the old tiles on the other side. Removed felt from a roof on a large studio and replaced with fibre cement based tiles. Recently re-tiled a bungalow with shingle tiles (wood). All the work has been carried out with efficiency and excellent workmanship throughout. I would recommend this company.”

Run-away laptops Crime statistics show that a UK laptop wanders off every minute each day, taking with it treasured photographs, documents and possibly access to online accounts. What can you do keep your data safe and recover your device? Your first action is to reduce the chance of theft by knowing where your devices are, ideally keeping them out of sight and close beside you to avoid the classic bag-snatch. Make a note of your machines’ serials numbers so you can confirm ownership to the police. The following easy steps will secure your data and your control over your devices: use your devices’ password facilities, backup your data often and prepare software to control your device remotely. If you are a doctor or lawyer with a duty of care for your data, you may choose the very James Bond option of encrypting your devices to keep data private. Just hang onto your secret key or your data will become as inaccessible as the moon in a puddle.

Android- and Apple-produced devices have built-in software for tracking and remote-controlling your device including deleting sensitive data. These need just a couple of minutes for configuration. There are two notable alternatives. Lojack-forlaptop uses undeletable software to track and control your non-Apple laptop, enhancing the chances of recovery. Prey is a one-stop application for tracking and controlling your entire collection of mobile phones, laptops and tablets. Finally, a note for photographers. GadgetTrak’s Serial Search Service will look for your camera’s serial number among the millions of pictures posted online. This may help you to follow the footprints of your stolen camera and be reunited you with your pride and joy. RL Computer Solutions See ad on page opposite

Backing-up is simple if unexciting. By contrast, not having a backup of your devices is like driving without a seat-belt: everything is fine right up to the moment it becomes an unpleasant mess. If you care about your data then backing-up is as essential as brushing your teeth. There are lots of options. Get expert advice if you are unsure.

As most of us know, East Grinstead is a very giving town, and this has been demonstrated once again by the charity feast concept of fundraising by local eating out, helping local charities at the same time. 2015 was a fabulous year, since July there was a meal put on each month for a variety of charities and in October an ‘extravaganza’ of several meals at different local restaurants in one night. The total raised last year was about £9,500! Organisers would like to thank all who took part and encourage more. It’s a perfect excuse for getting together with friends for a great cause and a decent banter! These local charities are being supported: Crawley Open House, Crawley Prison Fellowship, Age UK East Grinstead & District, East Grinstead Street
Pastors and East Grinstead Community First Responders. Meals at Tarana, Lingfield, 01342 832222, on 11th April and LaFarola, 01342 322399, on 18th April at 6.30pm for 7pm start; £16 each and £8 of this will go to the 5 charities. Barclays will match the first £1000 made! Also on Tues 5th April, EG Charcoal Grill, 01342 410305, and Glanfield Food and Wine, 01342 325666, will give a donation of takings for the day and on Tues 26th April Shapla, 01342 313127 will also give a donation. Please mention charity feast when ordering takeaways. There is also a meal being organised in June for East Grinstead Food Bank and East Grinstead Street Pastors on Monday 27th June at Tarana Lingfield. Thank you Grinnians!

Care Costs – Protect your Legacy At The Estate Planning Consultancy we deal with many people with different needs and concerns. It’s becoming more frequent that people approach us with concerns about losing their home to pay for care costs. It’s a big worry for some people and we spend a lot of time dispelling myths regarding what the local authority can and can’t do and what you can and can’t do. The starting point for any conversation is reviewing your will and making sure it reflects your wishes. The second stop on this journey is to ensure that you have Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney; Property and Financial Affairs as well as Health and Welfare. These documents allow you to appoint a trusted person or people to act on your behalf an in your best interests. They can be used either before or after you have lost mental capacity. It is vitally important to have a suitable will and Lasting Powers of Attorney in place as a foundation for any further planning. Most people will be expected to pay something towards the costs of their accommodation and personal care from their income and capital. If the local authority is involved in arranging your placement, the amount you will have to pay will be worked out via a means test, which is based on nationally set guidelines. Your local authority will firstly perform a care needs assessment to identify what help you need. Then they will carry out a means test to work out how much you have to pay towards your care home fees. Currently, if you have assets of more than £23,250, you will need to pay the full cost of your care. Your home won’t be included in this if a partner or close relative still lives there. Your income is also taken into account.
changes to the way that people fund their care, with a new cap on care costs to be set at £72,000. There are also changes to the means test. Although these changes were due to be introduced in April 2016, the government has now announced that it is to delay this timetable to April 2020. The long and the short of it is that we really don’t know where we stand. Our aim at The Estate Planning Consultancy is to ensure that, where care costs are a concern to someone, that they fully understand the financial implications of going in to care. Warts and all! The government has made it clear that they want us to contribute. It’s also been made clear that it doesn’t really matter who is in power either. In the United Kingdom and the world over, we’re starting to live longer and this problem isn’t going to go away. There are mechanisms in place that you can use in order to keep your family in control of where you are cared for and how much you pay. These range from care fees plans available through a financial adviser to simply not having sufficient assets by the time you go into care. If only we knew when and if we were going to go into care? As with many scenarios in life there can be more questions than answers and we can help address those.
From April 2015, your local authority has had to provide a personal budget showing how much they’ve calculated they should pay towards your eligible needs (the ones identified in the care needs assessment).

Slow cooked lamb, leek & lentil bake It takes about 20 minutes to put this casserole together, then you can enjoy the mouthwatering aromas as it slowly cooks. Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 1 hr 25 mins
What to do: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan oven 160°C, gas mark 4.
Ingredients: 1 tsp vegetable oil 350g lamb neck fillet trimmed and sliced 1 large onion sliced 1 leek sliced 2 carrots sliced 100g dried red lentils 50g frozen peas 750ml vegetable or chicken stock 2 tsp tomato puree 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground paprika 1 pinch ground black pepper 400g potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
2. Heat a large flameproof casserole dish on the hob and add the vegetable oil. Add the lamb chunks, letting them sear and brown before turning them over. Cook for 3-4 minutes until browned on all sides. 3. Add the onion, leek, carrots, lentils, peas, stock, tomato puree, cumin and paprika. Season with some pepper and stir well. Bring up to the boil, then remove from the heat. 4. Arrange the sliced potatoes in an overlapping layer to cover the surface of the lamb mixture. Cover and bake for 1 ¼ hours, removing the lid for the final 30 minutes to brown the potatoes. Tip 1: Dried red lentils don’t have to be pre-cooked as they soon become tender. Tip 2: The cumin and paprika add extra flavour and spiciness, though you could leave them out if you prefer.

We mums are living in a healthy-food-revolution and there lot’s of great recipes online that have far less refined sugar, lots of ‘good’ fats, etc. Here are just a couple of ideas for this Spring: Make your own lollies, smoothie up some fruit but add in veg too! Avocado and a handful of spinach doesn’t change the sweet flavour of the fruit but is so good for getting down some greens. Place the smoothie combo into ice-lolly maker and freeze. If the kids are concerned about the greenish colour just tell them it’s a ‘hulk lolly’ (for boys) or a ‘magic potion lolly’ (for girls).

Henslowe, who kept a diary which is one of the best sources for details of the Elizabethan theatre, was probably the most important theatre proprietor in London. As such he must have been well aware of Shakepeares’s existence, but because of the extreme rivalry between the two companies, did not give any reference to his importance. Philip Henslowe died in January 1616. He was buried in nearby Southwark Cathedral on the tenth of that month. He left in his will a bequest to forty poor men living in Clink Liberty, a prison near his house. Unfortunately, I cannot trace this will which might have shed light on his property in East Grinstead. His wife, Agnes died the following July and left money to help eighty women also living in the Clink Liberty. His wife’s will is available, but she gives her name as Anne, not Agnes. There is no doubt but that she is the same person. She calls herself the “widdow of Philip Henslowe” and after various small bequests, leaves her entire estate to “my daughter, Joan”. Her son-inlaw, Edward Alleyn is the executor. She, however, does not specify any particular property so again we cannot tell what was owned in East Grinstead.
Between their two deaths, occurred the death, in Stratford on Avon, of William Shakespeare, our greatest dramatist, on St George’s Day, April 23rd, the generally accepted date of his William Shakespeare birth as well. Shakespeare’s own will is best remembered for leaving his second best bed to his wife Anne! In this year in which tributes are being paid to mark the 400th anniversary of his death, it is pleasing to know that even in a very oblique fashion, Shakespeare had a passing connection with our town and whose anniversary year he shares.

April Reminders for your Garden
Blue skies and sunshine tempt us all into thinking the good weather is here to stay, but take caution, we’re still susceptible to a few frosts which can do damage to tender young shoots. The mild winter has encouraged a lot of new growth so keep an eye on the forecast and if a frost looks likely then use a fleece to cover any plants you think may be damaged. Now is the time to tidy your borders before the herbaceous perennials get going. Remove old foliage and debris and then mulch and feed with a good general purpose fertiliser. Any patches of bare ground can be fed in preparation for new plantings, much easier when the growth is low and you can get round the plants.
It is a good time to think about pest control, if you want to stay away from pellets then nematodes are a good alternative to keep the slugs and snails at bay. They can be bought on the internet quite easily and applied by watering in through a large rose watering can. Repeat the application every six weeks for the best results. April and September are considered by the experts to be the best time for planting evergreens (although if pot grown they can be planted at any time really). Dig a hole twice the size of the rootball and add a good compost and some Fish, Blood and Bone to encourage root growth, heel in well and ensure you keep it well watered during dry periods until the roots become more established.
Give some thought to summer bulbs as now is the best time to plant them. The larger varieties are perfect for the border but some of the smaller ones can be great for your patio pots and add variety to the normal summer bedding. Dahlias, Gladioli and Lily all have dwarf options available. Another consideration for your patio is planting fruits into pots or hanging baskets. Strawberries are perfect for this, they look attractive and make the fruits very accessible. Use John Innes No.3 for the best results. In winter move the pot into the greenhouse to protect it from frosts. April is the best time to give your lawn a good feed. Using a lawn dressing can help to control moss and weeds as well as feeding at the same time. You really only need to feed your lawn once a year. Enjoy your garden… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer

A tribute to my father, Belsen liberator, Leonard Berney By John Wood
Last year East Grinstead resident John Wood converted his father Major Leonard Berney’s personal account of his experiences into the book “Liberating Belsen Concentration Camp”; it’s the only book to be published that recounts the events that led up to the British Army’s uncovering of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945. Its significance was such that it was given full attention by the national press. Last month sadly Major Berney passed away, and here is his son John’s tribute: It’s funny how, sometimes, only after someone has passed away do you fully realise who they were and how important their achievements were. Such is the case for me regarding my father, Leonard Berney who died on 7th March 2016 at the ripe old age of 95. Of course I knew that my father, Major Berney, was one of the first officers to enter Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp on 15th April 1945, the day the camp was liberated, and that he ran the Belsen Camp for Displaced Persons for the next 3+ months. Just last year I converted the detailed personal account of his experiences at Belsen into a book called “Liberating Belsen Concentration Camp”. And I also knew he went on to become a successful businessman in the clothing, property and investment industries, and that he piloted his own plane too in his spare time. But it’s not until I received the countless heartfelt messages of condolence that are still coming in by texts, facebook messages, e-mails and tweets, and read 22
how loved he was there by crew and residents alike. While I was having lunch with him and family, a fellow resident who was passing by suddenly, and completely unprompted, could not stop herself from pouring praise onto us about what an amazing fellow my father was and how everyone on board loved him! I’m very glad I witnessed that first hand.

his obituaries in the Telegraph and other national newspapers, that I began to fully realise what a remarkable man he was. He wasn’t just the person who told me to hold my knife and fork properly and to not drop my “t”s and “h”s after all: he contributed to saving thousands of lives while at Belsen, yet recoiled in horror should anyone try to label him a hero. “I was just doing my duty,” he would always say. Just how traumatised he was from being exposed to the extreme horrors of Belsen, and for so long, we’ll never know, but despite that, he still managed to lead an extremely successful life. He was very kind and extremely generous too. I feel so enormously proud of him! He lived out the final seven years of his life aboard the unique residential cruise ship The World which circumnavigates the globe non stop. The last time I saw him was during my visit to the ship in August 2015. I was struck by

My dad became quite a formidable Holocaust educator in his latter years, delivering lectures on the liberation of Belsen, being interviewed by the media on the subject, publishing his book and appearing in two important documentaries on the Holocaust, “Night Will Fall” and “No Asylum”. You can see why I applied for him to be considered for an OBE or similar and I was pretty certain he was going to be presented with his award this summer by the Queen. So, when the 2016 Queen’s Birthday honours list is announced, spare a thought for him.

EG Volunteer Extraordinaire takes Gold Congratulations to East Grinstead’s Liz Glenister who has just won Britain’s Best Volunteer award 2016, an award run by the Small Charities Coalition. Her award was presented at the end of March at London’s Walkie Talkie building. Here is a ‘Q&A’ with her about her incredible work: Please explain what the Hypopara gland is and how you came to establish this, the first UK charity that addresses problems with this gland? We usually have 4 parathyroid glands, about the size of a grain of rice, which lie behind the thyroid gland in your neck. They are not related to the thyroid except by name - ‘para’ comes from the Greek for ‘near’. The role of the parathyroid glands is to regulate the level of calcium in our blood. This is necessary because calcium levels fluctuate constantly in response to a number of factors such as food, drink, exercise, stress, infection and other medications. Calcium is one of the minerals which keeps us alive which is why the body has special mechanisms in place to keep calcium levels constant. Most people know about teeth and bones in connection with calcium but in fact its in every cell and affects the whole body: it produces energy, helps blood to clot, and our nerves, muscles, kidneys, eyes and heart to work properly. Over 20 years ago now, when I was 37, a teacher with 3 young children, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I went into hospital for a thyroidectomy and came out with permanent Hypoparathyroidism caused by the surgery. 4 days later I had a seizure - my entire body completely and very painfully distorted and cramped up, from face to toes including internally, and I was totally paralysed - but fully conscious. This was tetany, the effect of having no calcium left in my body due to the damaged parathyroid glands. I was given calcium injections which unfolded me gradually and put on medication but maintaining stable calcium levels became a challenge I am still facing on a daily basis, 23 years later. 24
I didn’t know what was wrong with me and nor did the doctors. It was several years and many emergency dashes to A&E later that I found out what was happening to me and learnt how to cope as best I could. There was no information available even on the internet which had just arrived and many doctors had never heard of the condition. One day I logged on and typed the word for the millionth time and there was a link. It led me to the American Hypoparathyroidism association which had just set up and I got in touch. That was a day I shall never forget. They gave me £300 to set up a website and forum and Hypopara UK was born. I never, ever wanted anyone to go through the same experience. I wanted to provide a place for people to meet - there must be others?! I wanted to raise awareness to the medical profession and campaign for better care. How has the charity evolved from its conception? Ten years on we’re well regarded in the endocrine world, have 1800 members and an expert team of doctors with whom we work closely to bring about research. We produce information leaflets, have been involved in a global trial for the first replacement hormone, and have been involved in bringing about the first clinical guidelines on Hypoparathyroidism. We have a great family of patients in the UK and have set up groups in Australia and France as well as a World Awareness Day. You have been nominated as Volunteer of the Year. How did this come about in the first place and what was your reaction? Two of my committee members put me up for it and I didn’t really think anymore if it until I heard I’d got through to the finals! I was completely amazed and if I’m honest, a bit scared too - I’m a behind the scenes person really. But I was also delighted because I see it as a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the charity and the condition. I’ve been hugely touched by the amazing support I’ve received during the campaign. Congratulations on a well deserved win! For more information about this charities work see www.hypopara.org.uk

Pioneering pilot, an extraordinary life the passing of a national treasure.
Captain Eric Melrose ‘Winkle’ Brown CBE, DSC, AFC, Hon FRAeS, RN January, 21st 1919 – February, 21st 2016 eight and his father, a pilot in the First World War took him up in a bi-plane. In an interview he gave to the BBC in 2014, Brown said of his experience flying with his father in the bi-plane: “There was no second seat, but I sat on his lap and he let me handle the stick. It was exhilarating. You saw the Earth from a completely different standpoint.”
Pioneering and extraordinary can often be over-used in modern discourse particularly when describing achievements of someone who has just passedaway but with the death in February of Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown the descriptions are more than just apt, they embody his achievements. Brown lived-out his final years in Copthorne where he wrote various books about his
experiences as a Royal Navy officer and as a test pilot. During his time as a test pilot he flew more than 480 different types of aircraft, a figure greater than anyone else in history. Born in Leith, Scotland in 1919 and educated at Edinburgh’s Royal High School, before studying at the University of Edinburgh, where he learnt to fly. His interest in flying is said to have come about when he was
On 3 December 1945, Brown became the first pilot to land on and take off (pictured) from an aircraft carrier (HMS Ocean) in a jet aircraft.

During his time in the Royal Navy he would go on to fly almost every category of RAF aircraft: glider, fighter, bomber, airliner, amphibian, flying boat, and helicopter. During the Second World War he also flew several captured German aircraft, including new jet and rocket planes. Brown received the affectionate nickname ‘Winkle’ from his Royal Navy colleagues due to his height of 5ft 7in. It was his short stature that Brown would credit to his survival ability – due to his size,

he said: he had the ability to “curl himself-up in the cockpit.” He remains a hero among military pilots who today fly far more safely thanks to the techniques and technologies he helped to test often endangering himself and therefore his ability to curl-up in the cockpit would prove to be invaluable in moments of danger. In an extraordinary life and career, he remains the mostdecorated pilot in the history of the Royal Navy but his exploits are landmark events of the 20th century – he was at the 1936 Berlin Olympic games, he interrogated Hermann Goering and he helped liberate Bergen Belsen concentration camp. In 1936, he attended the Olympics and in 1939 when war broke out he was teaching in Germany. The SS escorted him to the Swiss border and let him keep his MG car before he made his way back to Britain where he volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm, the airborne branch of the Royal Navy. Though never a formally qualified test pilot, Brown’s flying ability was so outstanding that he

was sent to the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough to take part in trials of the newly navalised versions of the Hurricane and Spitfire aircrafts. Brown held the world record for the most aircraft carrier deck take-offs and landings performed, both of which total more than 2,000 respectively and achieved several ‘firsts’ in naval aviation, including the first landings on an aircraft carrier of a twin-engined aircraft. By the end of 1943 he had already chalked-up some 1,500 deck landings on 22 ships and in 1944 he was appointed MBE for his outstanding enterprise and skill in
piloting aircraft during hazardous trials in wartime. Between 1944 and 1950, he continued his role of experimental test flying. Performing the first landing of a jet aircraft on a carrier, a de Havilland Sea Vampire on the carrier Ocean in December 1945 Brown, said: “that only pilots of exceptional skill like himself would be able to repeat the operation safely.” During the Korean War Brown was lent to the US Naval Test Centre in Maryland. He introduced to the American’s the new British concepts of angled flight deck. By 1954 he was given command of 804 Naval Air Squadron, flying the Sea Hawk fighter-bomber. In 1957 he returned to Germany to train-up the new German naval air arm to NATO standards before being promoted to captain and time spent serving in the admiralty as deputy director of Naval Air Warfare playing a key role in the development of new carriers.

HMS Audacity - Brown was one of only two survivors after its sinking
Brown said Goering was “quite charismatic in many ways.” He asked Goering how he saw the outcome of the Battle of Britain to which the reply from Goering was in a succinct response – “A draw.”
Fluent in German and with his expertise on aircraft meant Brown interviewed many important figures during the war including Hermann Goering (pictured)
in the ocean.” Adding it was a game of Russian roulette – “We had one incident every nine landings.” The US Navy were said to have given one man the specific job of breaking the record set by Brown – “To his everlasting credit he got up to 1,600 and then had a nervous breakdown” said Brown reminiscing about the competition to his world-record.
He retired from the Royal Navy in 1970, becoming the director general of the British Helicopter Advisory Board and later the president of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1982. Last flying in 1994, he said giving-up flying which had been such an integral part of his life was like “drug withdrawal”. He wrote numerous books of his own about his experiences and provided forewords for other authors on their books on the theme of aviation both before and after his retirement. In 1962, he was ordered to write a short
In 2006 the book was revived and published as Wings on my Sleeve and followed-up on his 2002 book Wings of the Luftwaffe which sold more than 100,000 copies. In March last year, a bronze bust of him was unveiled at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Somerset to celebrate his achievements. Despite his age, Brown continued to make public appearances, including an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2014 and celebrations for his 97th birthday this year when he was joined in London by more than 100 pilots and the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas. Brown, who had been appointed MBE, OBE and CBE, retained a sense of purpose throughout his life with writing and lecturing engagements as well as answering hundreds of letters by hand, spurning computers. He died at East Surrey Hospital on February, 21st 2016 after a short illness.
Fluent in German and with his expertise on aircraft meant he interviewed many important figures during the war including Hermann Goering and the socalled beast of Belsen Irma Grese, Captain Brown described Grese as the “worst person I have ever met.” During Allied interrogation of Nazi military leader Goering,
